Small actionable steps… A few small steps will improve your life and strengthen your emotional immunity for life’s little surprises which come your way. Where to begin? Start by giving yourself the right focused attention. Try this for 28 days… Wake up an hour earlier each day. According to personal mastery guru Brian Tracey, doing this helps you rewire your brain to give you the attention you need to reset yourself for the day ahead. I’ve tried and tested this and it works.

Wake up early: Make yourself your first priority of each day: Wake up 1 hour earlier before the rest of the household. Call this time whatever you like make it fun; ME Time, Meditate: After you have done the basic morning bathroom routine go sit in silence with your eyes closed for 10 minutes focusing on this breathing method: 4—7—8. Breathe 4 seconds in through your nose, HOLD for 7 seconds and breathe OUT for 8 seconds. Focus on breathing and you will quickly feel energized. Reflect: Spend 10-15 minutes writing in a journal using gut feelings and not your mind. Gut feelings are things which come up as a result of having a free mind which happens during meditating. Keep breathing deep in an uninterrupted loop as you do this. Positive Self Talk: Make a personal declaration such as “Today is my day.” This sets your brain up for the day ahead with positivity. Physical Exercise: Perform some stretching or basic Yoga practice for 20 minutes to create flow in your body.

Plan: Take 15 minutes to plan what your day is meant to be like and what is required to accomplish the goals for the day ahead. Doing so will make you feel stronger and prepared to achieve the day ahead. Also plan to have 2 liters of water to drink during the day which adds to energy and eat a healthy breakfast and lunch. Include this as part of the days plan. n

Should women train for strength? Strength training should be an important part of every women’s workout regimens, yet according to research only about 20% of women lift weights. Poor advice may be to blame. Women often fall victim to false information circulating about lifting weights. By getting educated, women can do much to improve their workouts, their health, and how they look. One of the more widely circulated myths regarding women and weightlifting is that women who lift heavy weights will get bulky. The fact is that when any person picks up progressively heavier weights as he or she gets acclimated to lifting, that individual will get stronger, but not necessarily bigger. People who “bulk up” eat and train specifically for that purpose. It certainly doesn’t happen by accident. In addition, women simply do not have the amount of testosterone necessary to bulk up without taking added measures designed to add bulk. Correctly performed strength training will help virtually any woman lose more fat than she’ll gain in muscle. One who trains two to three times a week for two months can gain roughly one kilo of muscle, but will lose 1.5 – 1.75 kilos of fat. Women who want to lose weight may should definitely employ strength training to reach their goals. Their body will be stronger and more toned.

Strength training also can help decrease one’s risk of osteoporosis, strengthen bones, improve posture, and reduce back pain. Weight training strengthens the muscles and bones that support the body. Women should be open to the idea of lifting weights as part of a balanced workout regimen. n

Remove fitness as your focus if you want to lose fat What is one of the first things most people do when they feel they need to lose some weight? They join a gym. Or insert any other kind of fitness activity you like here. Because exercise is what helps you to lose weight right? Wrong. Four weeks after a normal and healthy birth with my second child, I was given the go ahead to resume my usual exercise regime of spin classes, boot camps and weight training on the compound I lived on in Saudi Arabia. And from this moment on, after my initial and immediate post labour weight loss, my weight steadily began to climb up to my highest weight ever 3.5 years later. This was when I finally decided to do something serious about it. Even in the months prior to me staring this particular game plan, I was training way harder than I have in the last 18 months of my current body transformation. I even thought a self imposed 30 consecutive days of spin class challenge would shift some kilos but it didn’t at all. In fact in made me eat more, which set me back in my fat loss goals. Ever heard these sayings? “You can’t outrun a bad diet” or “Abs are made in the kitchen”? It’s true! Fitness has its place in a healthy lifestyle, but not when you begin your weight loss journey. This is when it can be counter productive, with you working out and eating back your calories and then some! It takes way too much exercise to work off that cookie we had with our morning coffee. If you’ve had success with weight loss in the past when you have been exercising, it’s only because you had also made some dietary changes at the same time. Some of us find it more encouraging to stick to a healthier diet when we know how hard we worked out at the gym, but it’s not always the case as studies have proven that exercise can reduce self control too.n

Ask HV Holistic Health… How important is it that I wear a fitted sports bra?

Breast is best

Charlie Answers: If you want to avoid adding more sag to your breasts, or if you’re struggling with poor posture or back/ neck pain, finding the perfect bra for exercise is vital. Breast tissue is surrounded by lots of Cooper’s ligaments that give your breasts their shape. Once stretched, these can never be restored. Supporting them will not only help maintain the way your chest looks but, your posture and back pain can be improved, too. A pair of D-Cup breasts weigh between 15-23lbs (6-10kg)… those ligaments have to work extremely hard in a Zumba class, or if you’re going for a run!

Strap it up 80% of the support should come from the back band, with 10% from the straps, and 10% from the cup itself. If your shoulders are taking the strain, the pressure on the trapezius muscle will negatively affect the movement of your neck, leading inevitably to pain over time. The back band should be snug but, not tight. Opting for the tightest fit or layering two bras isn’t ideal, because it can impose on your diaphragm when you’re out of breath, leading to breathing pattern dysfunction, increased cortisol levels, and a host of other problems.

36 Bahrain Confidential August 2018

Top tips • The choice of underwire or not boils down to personal preference. If you want underwire, opt for a flexible, silicone coated wiring. • An encapsulated cup offers support to the breast all the way around, and will prevent you rocking the mono-boob look. • Hand-washing will prolong your bras life, and save you money in the long run.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a sports bra all the time, which is great news for all the personal trainers and avid exercisers out there! If you’ve just had a baby or you’re pregnant, your evolving breasts will need more support than ever. If you’re losing or gaining weight, changing your bra to fit your new shape and size is particularly important. A fitting once every 6 months is advisable but, this time reduces when you’re pregnant, or postpartum.

One size does NOT fit all! Statistics show that around 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, and usually it’s because ladies either don’t understand the importance of ‘correct fit’, or they’re concerned that the shops won’t have anything that will fit them. We found sports bras at TKD in Al Aali mall, ranging from B to J-Cup, and they offered practical advice about choosing the right bra. So I urge you to protect your assets, and provide them with the support they need, especially when exercising. Thanks to TKD Lingerie, (tkdlingerie.com or 17540136), for their help with this feature. n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Charlie Anderson Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544 or 39772100

ver the years, the advantage of complementary and alternative medicine has been subject to some debate in Bahrain. However, thanks to the National Health Regulatory Authority, this stream of healthcare has been recently endorsed and promoted.

Together in partnership, Lana Peters and Eyad Fareed, founders of BeRehab, are proud of just how far Bahrain has come in embracing the different modalities of healthcare in just a few short years. The new home-grown alternative medicine centre has set its flagship practise in the newly opened Zallaq Springs where they offer a base to service Riffa, Riffa Views, Hamad Town, Awali and other areas nearby. They are aiming at a midSeptember opening. According to Lana, the whole concept is to tweak the health model to collaborate mainstream and alternative medicine to offer a broader service by integration of multidisciplinary professionals both in-house and out-house. They intend to achieve that at BE Rehab. “A lifestyle is developing in Bahrain that revolves around sports and selfawareness, and Zallaq happens to be the hub of sporting activities. ell us about yourself. What shaped you to become who you are now?

First and foremost, I am the eldest child of Mr. Hassan Bokhowa and I was born and brought up in our beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain. I received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Bahrain, an MBA from Torrens University of Australia, and I am looking forward to pursuing a Ph.D. My father has been running a construction business for over 41 years. I remember with great fondness that as a child, he would take me to visit our construction sites. I attribute these visits to cementing my sense of passion, commitment, discipline, and dedication to my work and my life.

provide them with the necessities of life. As with any living community, their requirements are always changing, and we need to change to respond. We succeeded in offering a convenient location for most daily needs and products. We also hold cultural events to help 'develop' our local community and the broader population of Bahrain.

What are your next steps for Saar Mall? In addition to becoming a true hub for the local community, I would like Saar Mall to be seen as a retail innovator, a ‘test bed’ introducing new brands and promotional concepts to Bahrain.

What led you to take over Saar Mall from your father? Saar Mall was founded by Mr. Hassan Bokhowa in 2008 and opened in 2013. I have been CFO of our company since my 20's. I have also been greatly involved with many of Bahrain’s charities and social affairs. Since my father and brother's expertise is in construction, I was the one they turned to ensure the Mall was functioning properly.

Our initial vision was to serve the surrounding community and provide them with the necessities of life. How has the journey as an entrepreneur treated you so far? It has caused me to strive for personal excellence! It required tremendous dedication, discipline, and willpower. I have had to triple my productivity and performance and this has taught me to be innovative. In order to achieve this, I have constantly needed to go outside my comfort zone which made me grow more than I ever thought I could.

Can you tell us about an experience that changed your outlook? We have the opportunity to learn and experience more every day at Saar Mall. However, I find initiating, volunteering and participating in charitable events particularly enjoyable and rewarding. n

hat makes Careem different?

Careem was launched in 2012 with the simple mission of improving and simplifying people's lives. We are from the region and for the region and today operate in over 100 cities and 14 countries from Morocco in the West, through MENA (including Saudi Arabia, UAE, wider GCC and Levant) to Pakistan in the East. As well as improving mobility for millions of people, we have also created 975,000 income earning opportunities for people across our region and anticipate signing up our one millionth Captain in the next few months. Job creation was always one of the important things for us.

Careem has been in Bahrain since 2014. In that time, what have been the biggest lessons you have learned about this particular market? We have learned that the Bahrain market is a very promising and we

42 Bahrain Confidential August 2018

Feature see that there are many opportunities to provide reliable, safe mobility solutions to customers. We have seen a lot of growth in the last 12 months as customers start adopting ride-hailing services, and we believe that this is just the beginning of our journey to impact the lives of our customers in a positive way

Why do you call your drivers ‘Captains’? We call our drivers Captains as a term of respect and to acknowledge their essential role in keeping our cities moving and in providing a great service to our customers.

How do Careem’s services and prices compare with those of your competition?

What are the biggest challenges you believe your industry faces over the next five years? Within the countries in which Careem currently operates, we believe that right now, we only have one percent of the addressable market. There are around 600 million people in the MENA region and we are currently only reaching about one percent of them. The potential for growth is significant and that’s the big challenge. It’s worth noting that the average age of a Careem customer is between 20-35 years old - Careem is a hugely-popular company with younger people and a sign that Millennials are leading the way towards a ride-sharing future.

We are priced very competitively in order to ensure that we are able to cater for all the segments in the market. Mobility for all is one of our aims and we want to ensure that customers see value in the service we’re offering and remain accessible to as many people as possible.

Beyond being a taxi service, what other services does Careem offer? In other markets like the UAE market, we offer many types of cars that cater to different needs, we have economy, business and GO which cater to different customer segments and a MAX car type for up to six passengers, Careem Kids cars which are fitted with child seats. We also have BOX delivery which allows purchase and pick up of any items, and a Roundmenu food app which is powered by Careem, which allows users to order food from a large array of restaurants and cafes and have it delivered to their location.

How do you expect future technology to change your current business model?

What advice would you give to anyone on how to get the very best value as a Careem customer?

We are, at heart, a technology company and ride hailing is just one way in which we are using our platform. The app contains some cutting-edge technology - including advanced artificialintelligence - and is continually updated, so we are continually at the forefront of app-based technology and any new ways that it can help us simplify and improve lives.

The more you use the Careem app the better it gets! The artificial intelligence keeps learning and the service keeps on improving – if you use the Careem service for six months then after that the A.I. will be much better for you because it has collected so much data, and based on that data it keeps learning how to provide you with a better service. It learns where you like to go, where you don’t go and start reflecting your preferences in the user experience - the Careem A.I. is raising the stakes. Also, get in touch. We listen closely to feedback and that’s invaluable as it allows us to improve our service. n www.careem.com @careembah

Artisans Across Borders

The Kingdom of Bahrain is home to numerous crafts and arts.

‘A

rtisans Across Borders’ an initiative led by ArtBAB Fair & Program Director Kaneka Subberwal, recognizes the potential of Bahrain’s artistic talent and aims to elevate Bahrain’s arts and crafts into luxury acquisitions that will be sought after in branded stores across the world. To achieve this, Kaneka Subberwal has brought in global fashion mogul JJ Valaya to curate the project. The design guru and luxury fashion icon aims to work closely with the nation’s craftspeople and impress upon them a contemporary designer touch.

Valaya says he believes that for craft to stay relevant, it has to step into the realm of modernity. Bahrain’s craftspeople, he believes, need to be nourished with radical vision and ideas. The project involves craftspeople from the Jasra Handicrafts Centre, Capital Mall, and the Manama Handicrafts Centre. The project not only pertains to the resuscitation of handicrafts in the kingdom but also to display a contemporary portrait of Bahrain, one where, in JJ Valaya’s own words, “timeless crafts meld with millennial sensibilities”.

The project leverages the increasing organic growth of ArtBAB to construct this commercial identity without compromising the quality of the art itself.

The initiative will unfold in three parts: First, an Artisanal Room which will feature dramatic masterpieces with their origins in Bahraini crafts. Second, a portfolio of stylish commercial interpretation of Bahraini craft pieces. And third, a book of Bahrain that will encompass various angles of Bahrain's’ architecture, history, portraiture, cityscapes, and ‘persona’. elcome to Bahrain. How long have you been here, and what do you think of the place?

I’ve been here 2 months and I’ve been totally focused on work so not yet had a chance to explore, but I must say that I find the people here welcoming and easy to meet.

What makes Swiss-Belhotel different from other hotels? Well, with regards to this property, it’s ultra-modern, has unusually large rooms, the level of service is particularly high, we are conveniently located in the Seef district, and our chef specializes in designing quality cuisine made specially to suit different personal tastes.

less attractive for Saudi visitors? In the longer term quite possibly, but it takes time to establish many of these changes so I predict at least for the next few years it shouldn’t have too much of a negative impact. This means Bahrain has time to prepare accordingly.

What do you most like, and dislike, about your job? I love the travel and the experiences I have. This industry has passion and no two days are the same. There is a strong team spirit with those you work with. As for dislikes, I don’t like low occupancy.

What do you plan to achieve? I intend to increase our share of the market by providing exceptional service to our guests, create offers and incentives that appeal to our clientele, and quickly adapt to market conditions which would consequently increase the owner’s ROI. We are very fortunate to have a visionary and supportive owner who understands the market. We are currently in the process of optimizing hotel space and services to cater for more MICE business.

The market is already over saturated so it will be interesting to see how things play out. Does Swiss-Belhotel International have any expansion plan?

Any motto that guides you?

Swiss-Belhotel International will be opening a new five star property located near Reef Island next year, and the SwissBelresidences Juffair later this year.

The only truth is the one of the moment, everything can change in a second. The past has taken you to where you are now but it will not show you where to go.

There’s lots of new luxury hotels opening, yet no sign of an increase in demand. Do you have a view on this?

How do you relax?

The market is already over saturated so it will be interesting to see how things play out. I believe if Bahrain is to follow the regional trend and host more big events and continue to develop tourism through the enhancement of its beautiful natural resources, that would definitely play a role in increasing the demand. Currently Bahrain tourism is overly dependent on visitors from Saudi Arabia and private events. Bahrain’s major international event is Formula One, but Bahrain has the capacity for so much more.

Saudi Arabia is changing, hosting public events and opening Cinemas etc. Will this make Bahrain

I run every day. When I was living in Brazil I used to run on Copacabana beach each morning at 5.30 am. I would use that time to think and plan my day. By the time I was showered and in the office I had my day already planned and I was ready to activate it.

Are you married? Yes. My wife joins me at the end of this month. She is a trainer with the DeRose method, a methodology that enhances mental clarity and focus to enable high performance, whether in study, work, sports, or a hobby. This is achieved through breathing techniques, focus, and relaxation. Its ultimate aim is to develop a high performance life. n

Tricks to SummerProof Your Hair Summer has hit Bahrain like a wrecking ball, it feels like 50 degrees. Summer can have a very drying effect on your hair, so in order to keep your locks luscious, you’ll need to switch some things up and use products that benefit your strands during hot, humid days. So, here’s some good to start tips to keep your hair perfect all summer long.

1. Go Natural See what works best for you in the summer. If you find that your hair gets frizzy and limps after blow-drying, let your hair air dry – it will shape itself into its natural texture. If you have straight hair, I would recommend working a little bit of mousse through damp hair and letting it air dry. This will give you soft waves and will keep the fizziness at bay. Do the same with curly hair – don’t fight your hair’s natural texture.

2. Pause the Heat Stylers In summer, blow-dryers, your flatiron and your curling iron will just burn your hair and make them much drier. Instead, let your hair dry naturally; scrunch it up with some mousse or do an elegant side braid.

3. Switch to a different Shampoo Switch to a shampoo that adds moisture and contains a sunscreen. Your locks will feel softer, smoother and much more manageable.

4. Deep condition Keep your hair healthy and vibrant by doing a weekly deep conditioning treatment on your hair.

5. Trim Split Ends Don’t ditch trimming your split ends regularly. This will ensure that your locks stay healthy and shiny. Ladies who cover their hair are also not spared from the scorching heat of Bahrain. We need to pamper our hair as much as others. Make sure you use light colored clothe and airy fabric to cover your head. This helps the pores breathe and maintains the moisture within. Stay tuned for more tips to beat the heat, ladies. n

Car Review

The Mini Mk3 Nicholas Cooksey visits Dubai to drive the latest incarnation of the iconic British car.

T

he iconic Mini has just had a facelift, and it includes Union Jack rear lights – seriously! Buyers can also have an illuminated Union Flag on the passenger-side dashboard. And, there’s all sorts of personalization options including having your name, or any name, on an interior or exterior panel of the car in a choice of colours and textures. Mini is part of the BMW group, and it shares a lot with the latest BMW 2-Series. It’s fair to describe its sportier models, particularly the JCW version, as fitting into the ‘Hot Hatch’ category. There are few small hatchbacks that can corner as well as a MINI, and the feel through the steering wheel is excellent.

That said, high quality BMW materials and superb noise suppression make it feel more like a luxury car. The dash is busy with lots of knobs, buttons, and circular dials. By far the largest circular dial, prominently positioned in the center of the dash, is a 6.5-inch touchscreen, which can also be operated via MINI’s version of the BMW iDrive controller. A multifunction steering wheel is also offered as standard.

Mini is part of the BMW group, and it shares a lot with the latest BMW 2-Series. Lots of online connected services are available, including MINI Find Mate - just attach a special fob to your bag or keys and if you lose them your Mini will notify you where they are. There’s also a wireless phone charger - in fact this car has everything demanded by a tech savvy driver. Available in 3 or 5 door options, an additional 3 new paint colours, new trim options, new design alloy wheels, new seven speed automatic transmission, plus various cosmetic changes make the latest Mini a fun choice. The back seats don’t offer much leg-room and the boot is fairly small, but then this is a young person’s car and not a family car,

Car Review with perhaps the exception of the Mini Countryman. For the engine, the previous 1.2-litre four-cylinder in the basic model is replaced by a detuned version of the Cooper’s threecylinder 1.5, offering 101 bhp and zero to one hundred kph in 10.1 seconds. Meanwhile the sporty JCW (John Cooper Works) version with its 2 liter four cylinder will hit one hundred kph in just 6.3 seconds. I drove in its three drive modes (Green, Mid and Sport). Obviously Sport was by far the most fun, but in traffic I found Green was easier and less frustrating. My driving partner for the day was Karim, a motoring journalist from the Lebanon and a proud owner of a pre-face lift Mini. His

expert viewpoint was that the changes over the previous model, though an improvement, were relatively minor. He kept telling me I should buy a Mini for myself because they are great to own, and fun to drive. Compared to its main ‘semi-retro’ rivals, in my opinion – which is subjective - the Mini is a lot more capable than the Fiat 500, and more fun and better looking than the VW Beetle.

I was told that Mini are planning to stage a track day at Bahrain’s BIC in October. I hope I will be invited. It will be good fun to test this car on an F1 circuit. n Model yet to hit showrooms. For more information: Euro Motors MINI Tel. +973 1775 0750

Musings on life… The first time that I read Bahrain Confidential I thought oh my, this is a posh magazine, maybe it’s not for me. After all, I drink milk straight from the bottle and have been known to appear in public without make up, which aren’t very posh things to do on any given day. I started reading some of the articles, and I slowly changed my perception of what I at first thought was not for someone like me. I found real people, funny and inspiring, and it got me thinking about how our preconceived notions keep us from fully appreciating the diversities that shape us into such a riveting island. How often do we go to a new restaurant or social setting (or a new country) and immediately start looking for the familiar, a taste, a person, a product that makes us feel comforted because it falls into our own walls of safety. Why do we deny ourselves the undeniable growth that comes with fresh experiences? Stepping from our comfort zone can be daunting and downright scary, however it’s only outside of these selfcreated borders that we truly discover ourselves. For example, who knew that I would enjoy a steaming hot cup of Chai Karak coupled with a cheese stuffed roti on a street corner? Or that I would don a jacket in 22 degrees? Bahrain is truly a melting pot of cultures, ready for us to drink from its many offerings and pour ourselves into the mix. The history and culture beckons to us in the day, and at night the flickering lights of entertainment lure us in. Step out, breathe in (but not too deep, because you know, dust) and push yourself into new directions. Even a seemingly insignificant but new action, can turn into an amazing adventure if you are willing to let go of self- imposed limits. So, go on, go ride a camel, or drink milk from the bottle, whichever one will be a new experience for you! n

he first thing we have to address when talking about this Moroccan lounge is the way it looks. Just like all of Gallery 21’s beautiful outlets, the Genwa Moroccan Lounge is an artistic masterpiece. Today’s popular cafés and eateries often follow a minimalist approach but Genwa has adopted the left-field and it absolutely works. With vivid reds and oranges, deep purples and striking blues adorning the walls and furniture, elegant light fixtures, the vibrant throw pillows, the tinted windows and the highlight - the abstract paintings and portraits of famous celebrities in the Arab world. Going Out The seating arrangements are also done keeping that comfortable and intimate ambiance in mind. You either have tables for two or for a closely knit group setting. Placed for engaging and captivating conversations to take place. I assure you more than half of the conversation you’d have at Genwa would consist of you talking about the décor. The menu at Genwa maintains that Moroccan authenticity more than ever. The thing about Morocco’s cuisine is its origins are intricate in the country’s extensive history. So the menu is an elaborate one as well, there’s so much to choose from. From mixed grills to fluffy couscous to delightful tagines to beautiful mezzes to kebabs and the list goes on and on.

If you’re stumped in picking what to choose, you can just ask one of the friendly staff to recommend something for you. There’s no chance they’ll go wrong because everything on the menu is wonderful. Each dish is distinctive but they all have one thing in common and that is the flavor bomb. Explosions are part of the theme I suppose. Each dish has layers of flavor you’ll discover with each bite.

Today’s popular cafés and eateries often follow a minimalist approach but Genwa has adopted the left-field and it absolutely works.

The Shisha and beverages available at Genwa are also fantastic. There are 17 flavors of Shisha to choose from ranging from your classic flavors like Double apple to special Shisha like the watermelon & mint combo. From the beverages, The Summer Bee mocktail receives our high praise for sure. Craving for an authentic Moroccan experience, Genwa is the place to go. n For more information, Call + 973 1771 1600 or send an email to reservation@gallery21bahrain.com

While downing a few we were taking in the interiors and we were genuinely impressed. With the limited space and restrictions imposed, they had nevertheless managed to capture the essence of a true steakhouse. The Mediterranean Corner Bahrain Confidential takes a trip to French Italy in Bahrain with Florence - La Maison Mediterranneene.

W

e’ve all seen the orange house on the corner of Block 338 in Adliya, it’s quite hard to miss. With the vine-covered arch in the gateway, the pastel blue window frames, the glass pergola - you would have to be blind to not look at this pretty piece of architecture as you pass by. If you think it’s beautiful on the outside, wait till you walk in. Warning: clench your jaw to keep it falling to the ground. The interiors in Florence are done with an artistic eye. Every minuscule detail has been planned out. From the tungsten lights to the mason jars, the pastel wood cupboards, everything. The outdoors area and the balcony area are equally amazing. The whole ambiance is inviting and so pleasing that you don’t feel like leaving. You could take a picture by the fountain in Florence and tag your location as France or Italy and nobody will know the difference.

66 Bahrain Confidential August 2018

Going Out

But enough about the interiors, even though we can’t get enough of it. Let’s talk about the food. The menu in Florence is a true reflection of its tagline. It’s a combination of Mediterranean flavors in French, Italian, Turkish and Lebanese cuisine. Sounds weird, and most things on the menu make you question a little but trust the chef and prepare your taste buds for a fiesta. We sampled dishes that were recommended to us by the lovely staff of Florence and so our lunch consisted of the Gorgeous eggplant, the goat cheese salad, the Italian dip, the seafood Rigatoni, Shish Barak, Daja Warak Enab and two mocktails namely - A Summer in Florence and Pompeii. Words cannot explain the flavor explosion we had in our mouths. Every dish was tied together with a middle eastern touch. Whether it was the baked pepperoni rolls in the Italian dip or the gorgeous eggplant, it was a mélange of the middle-east and west. The stuffed vine leaves in the Daja Warak Enab were a crowd pleaser for sure, to be honest, everything on our table was. So the next time you want food that sings and an aesthetic location for your insta-feed Florence is the place to go. n Visit: Villa 118, Corner Road 3803, Block 338,, Rd No 3825, Manama, Tel. +973 1733 6373

Bonjour Paris!

Angelina Paris opens its iconic tearoom in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

F

seduced Parisians, and Angelina quickly became the essential gathering place for high society.

ounded in 1903, Angelina’s history dates back to the early 20th century, when Paris was still imbued with the spirit of the Belle Époque. It was then that tea rooms were born and adopted by Parisians as their new meeting places, more comfortable than traditional cafés and more fashionable than pastry shops.

Just recently, the iconic patisserie and tearoom opened its first location in the Kingdom of Bahrain at the stylish Block 338, with a second venue planned for autumn in The Avenues. he Adliya venue has seating for over 50 people and offers diners signature pastries, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the day.

During this period, the Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer arrived in the South of France, where he opened several shops and forged himself an excellent reputation. As the story goes, the Empress Elisabeth of AustriaHungary fell in love with his pastries and confectionaries during a visit to France.

Speaking at the opening of Angelina, Isabelle de Bardies CEO of Angelina worldwide, stated, “Generations have gone by since the launch of the first Angelina, and the elegant establishment has retained its fame over the years. Many luminaries have crossed paths in its rooms, including Proust and Coco Chanel. Today, Angelina represents a brand of timeless luxury and symbolises the French art of living around the world, which we are proud to be bringing to Bahrain in collaboration with Kingdom Gourmet” n

Encouraged by his success, Mr Rumpelmayer decided to conquer the French capital. In 1903, he founded a tearoom at 226 rue de Rivoli, where the former Hôtel Windsor used to be. He entrusted its management to his son, René, whose wife was named Angeline. A few years later, they decided to call the tearoom Angelina. The Rumpelmayer family’s expertise and passion for delicate confectionaries

I like walking when it’s not too hot, but as a female it seems many males, always Arabs (just being honest) believe if they pull up while driving and ask you something stupid like; “hi, what’s your name?”, you will actually engage them in conversation (and who knows what else). Others just stare at you like you’re a space alien. We long ago adopted the term ‘man-children’ for men that mentally haven’t grown up. But such harassment prevents many women from walking alone. But it gets worse. For over a year a growing number of selfish locals on motorbikes have used Juffair as their personal race circuit from around 10.30 pm till sometimes 4 am. Weekends are even worse. Most of them obviously don’t have jobs to get up for, nor have any responsibility beyond their own selfish amusement, yet can afford powerful noisy motorbikes which they love to rev as loud as they can at 3am. They behave like spoilt children and care nothing that they are making life miserable for hundreds, if not thousands, of hard working people that have jobs and need to sleep. I complained to the manager of my apartment block. He said others had also complained, that he’d repeatedly called the police, but they did nothing. I tried calling the police myself – he wasn’t kidding, they were not interested. A couple I know with young children moved from Juffair because they couldn’t stand the noise any longer. The police could stop these man-children in 24 hours if they wanted to. Introducing speed humps would also have a positive effect. Instead, nothing is done. why not? At least things are currently quite as I guess it’s too hot for them, but I dread the cooler weather and the return of the selfish irresponsible man-children playing on their noisy grown-up toys.n
