Bahrain’s Leaders in Hospitality

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned, and from whom?

Leading by example and motivating others have been the biggest learnings in my professional journey. In the early stages of my career, I learned from my mentors that being a leader is more than just taking charge; it means modelling the qualities and behaviours we expect from our team members. By maintaining a high level of professionalism, strong work ethic, and dedication, I’ve witnessed the impact of effective leadership firsthand. I actively involve myself in the hotel’s day-to-day operations, engaging with staff members, demonstrating values, and discussing expectations to reiterate the importance of leadership. This approach helps me foster a positive work culture and cultivate a highly motivated and engaged team.

Leading by Example In conversation with Petr Dubsky, General Manager of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa

I aim to create a sense of unity and shared purpose among our members, enabling us to deliver exceptional service and exceed our guests’ expectations. It is a fundamental principle that guides my leadership style and shapes the success of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa. The outcome is a positive and productive work environment and overall success. Do you have any major plans for the property? The hotel has successfully implemented several important strategies that have enhanced guest satisfaction and yielded positive financial outcomes. Given the unpredictable market conditions and fluctuating demand, we remain vigilant and are currently focusing on major improvements within the property. It is crucial to stay ahead of our guests’ ever-evolving needs. One of our primary objectives involves investing in renovation and upgrades. We aim to revitalise our property, offering a modern and inviting atmosphere while maintaining its elegant charm. Moreover, we acknowledge the increasing importance of sustainability and environmentally friendly practices within the hospitality industry. In alignment with the Radisson Hotel Group’s strategy, we aspire to incorporate eco-friendly measures such as energy-efficient technologies, waste reduction initiatives, and partnerships with local sustainable suppliers. Additionally, we plan to invest in cutting-edge systems that enhance our operational efficiency, optimize resource distribution, and ensure a smooth digital experience for our guests. This

Hospitality Leaders includes improving our online reservation systems, implementing contactless check-in and check-out procedures, and utilizing data analytics to personalise services and anticipate guest requirements. Since we met last year, have there been any significant changes for you or the property? The introduction of SOL Pool Lounge, our new food and beverage outlet, marks a notable change. This Greek-inspired lounge offers guests a unique and immersive dining experience, located by the pool area where they can indulge in culinary creations while enjoying the serene ambience and beautiful BLU views. Additionally, we have begun the renovation of our Residence Apartments, with the aim of enhancing comfort, style, and the overall experience for our guests. We have plans to revitalize our health club and spa facilities and explore new concepts to elevate the culinary offerings at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa.

What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? The hotel has effectively executed and facilitated numerous high-profile events, including conferences, exhibitions, and social gatherings. These events have not only enhanced the hotel’s standing and financial performance but also reinforced our stature as a leading location for hosting eminent events in Bahrain. Moreover, we commemorated our 40-year milestone, marking four decades of delivering exceptional hospitality to our guests. It was a momentous occasion that allowed us to reflect on our accomplishments, and express gratitude to our loyal guests and business partners. However, we have encountered specific challenges as well. Bahrain is progressing, and the hospitality industry is evolving with new hotels entering the market. Nevertheless, the assistance from MOT and BTEA is bolstering demand, and through our unwavering tenacity, we are effectively securing market shares. Client expectations have shifted in recent years, focusing on health and safety protocols. In spite of these challenges, our resolute adaptability enabled us to implement stringent health precautions and utilize technology to guarantee the well-being and ease of our guests. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? We thank the late Mr Ahmed Al Zayani for choosing the location of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa in Bahrain. Situated in a prime area, our hotel offers guests unrivalled access to key attractions, diplomatic areas, business districts, and cultural landmarks. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? Bahrain’s hospitality sector faces both challenges and prospects in the coming years. A significant trend to note is the surge in newly established hotels. Although this creates a competitive environment, it also signifies the industry’s expansion and potential. The influx of new hotels offers collaborative possibilities and elevates the overall standard of hospitality services.

I actively involve myself in the hotel’s day-to-day operations, engaging with staff members, demonstrating values, and discussing expectations to reiterate the importance of leadership.

Consequently, a challenge that surfaces is the necessity for differentiation. As more hotels enter the market, it becomes imperative for each establishment to pinpoint its distinctive selling propositions and provide unparalleled experiences that distinguish it from competitors. Furthermore, the industry has needed to adjust and respond to shifts in consumer demand based on behaviour, which has simultaneously opened doors for innovation. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Never give up on what you believe in and wish to achieve; life is way too short. n

Hospitality Leaders

Bahrain’s Leaders in Hospitality is Elite Seef Residence & Hotel, and we aim to maintain our reputation by adhering to the fundamentals and Elite standards. Additionally, we intend to carry out guest room renovations soon. Since we met last year, have there been any significant changes for you or the property? Our managing director, Mr. Shabeer Dadadhai, has added the task of managing our prestigious hotel in Juffair, Elite Crystal Hotel, in recognition of the hard effort I put in as general manager of the Elite Seef Residence & Hotel. We opened an exciting new outlet, Social Monkey, in our hotel. We also intend to open a BBQ Deck area in the coming months.

The Art of Listening In conversation with Fadl Adib, General Manager of Elite Seef Residence and Hotel

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned, and from whom?

Speak less and listen more, understand each role, encourage and develop, care for your team members, accept feedback and respond to it. Thanks to my mentor, the Chief Operating Officer of Elite Hospitality, Mr. Sarosh Aibara, who has taught me a lot. Do you have any major plans for the property? An extremely well-liked location for both business and leisure

6 Bahrain Confidential September - November 2023

What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? The pandemic itself was a significant issue. The market conditions, which included an influx of new hotels, disproportionate supply and demand, workforce shortages, and persistent economic challenges, directly impacted all elements of our business. However, we were compelled to keep the hotel open and functioning, avoid downsizing, and take good care of our team members’ well-being and of our property. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? Our location is in the heart of Manama, nestled in the Kingdom’s main shopping and business district. All our rooms are suites, making it appealing to both business and leisure guests looking to stay long-term and enjoy our facilities, be it restaurants, nightclubs, or spas. Moreover, Elite Seef Residence & Hotel is a pet-friendly hotel. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? The hospitality and tourism business is critical to a country’s economic development as it generates new economic activities such as greater job possibilities, economic diversification, infrastructure development, and higher spending in the host region. Key challenges include providing high-quality services at a reduced cost to meet client expectations, consistently meeting visitors’ needs to maintain 100% satisfaction, ensuring their return, promoting unique products to both existing and prospective customers, and developing inventive ideas to keep customers engaged. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Without a positive attitude, there is no positive action! n

Hospitality Leaders

Bahrain’s Leaders in Hospitality

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership you’ve learned, and from whom?

The best-ever lesson is understanding that the greatest doer of deeds may not always be the greatest leader. A leader’s role is to ensure that those under their mentorship have the confidence and ability to do great things themselves. I have learned this through thirty years of experience in the restaurant industry, which has included ups and downs, transitions to new roles and opportunities, store closures, and lost opportunities. Do you have any major plans for the property?

Inspiring Excellence In conversation with Mateo Ramos, Chief Executive Officer of Foodvest Holding

Our major plan is to open a total of 20 units in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia in 2023. Have there been any major changes for you or the property over the last year? Over the past year, we have opened two new Caribou Coffee locations in the Kingdom, bringing our total opening count to fourteen in 2023. Currently, we have three units under development, with two units signed in Saudi Arabia. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? I resonate with two quotes. First, “If it is to be it is up to me,” highlights the ultimate responsibility that leaders bear for their organisation and its successes. The second, “Only those who can see the invisible can do the impossible,” emphasises the necessity of having big dreams and ambitions, swinging for the fences and following one’s dreams. I believe that worrying about tomorrow does not decrease tomorrow’s sorrow but takes away today’s strength. The key lies in building dynamic, forward-looking teams that have the agility to handle any challenge that comes at them. n

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned, and from whom?

Stakeholders’ Engagements. I learned from my professor, Robert Kourtnik, at Cornell University to build and maintain relationships with the stakeholders. Do you have any major plans for the property? Our current plan is to carry on the helm of The Gulf Hotel Bahrain in Bahraini hospitality and culinary excellence with our 10 signature restaurants, 3 cafés & 3 bars. Renovations are due for the hotel lobby and two restaurants in the near future.

At The Helm of Excellence In conversation with Hameed Ali, General Manager, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain

The biggest challenge is the “changing market trends” in terms of technology & safety. What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? The biggest challenge is the “changing market trends” in terms of technology & safety. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? The Gulf Hotel Bahrain distinguishes itself with the highest number of signature restaurants (ten) on the island. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? The biggest challenge would be the increased competition from neighbouring countries and the lack of skilled labour. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Discipline, listening, communication and attention to detail are the hallmarks of success. n

Hospitality Leaders

Bahrain’s Leaders in Hospitality Since we met last year, have there been any significant changes for you or the property? We have refurbished the area of our terrace swimming pool to enhance our guests’ experience and introduced a new poolside menu. Personally, the knowledge and experience I have gained in the past years with many luxury hospitality brands in the Kingdom have helped me a lot in elevating my role at Gulf Suites Hotel – Amwaj. What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years?

Striving For Excellence In conversation with Deepak Nahar, Manager, Gulf Suites Hotel Amwaj

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned?

Leading by example encourages a positive and productive work culture. When your colleagues and other team members see your commitment and dedication, they are more likely to give their best efforts. It encourages everyone in the team to strive for excellence. Do you have any major plans for the property? A major goal is taking 4-star premium services to another level of comfort and luxury. We have doubled the size of our Spa facility and also offer customised wellness packages.

The Pandemic was, of course, the biggest challenge for our Hotel and most of the others. However, our loyal client base has continued to support us during these difficult times. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? The team comes first. A good team always supports you with success. A unique quality is our commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation, which includes ongoing green initiatives and implementing new ones. We have a 3,500 sq.m. landscaped garden with a large swimming pool, Jacuzzi, a children’s play area, and poolside dining. The Hotel offers packages and experiences that connect guests with nature and attract guests who value environmental stewardship. Gulf Suites Hotel – Amwaj is unique, with all our suites being very spacious and modern, boasting a luxurious lounge and fully equipped kitchen. We truly are a ‘Home away from Home’. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? There has been quite a surge in new hotel openings, meeting customers’ expectations at incredible value. Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority has supported the hospitality industry by continually organising events and conferences and promoting Bahrain internationally. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? The only way to do great work is to love what you do. Coming together is the beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. Achievements of today are the stepping stones for the future ones. n

Soon, we will be launching our Executive Lounge on the 39th floor. With its stunning view and artistic design adorned with beautiful artworks, it promises to be an exceptional space for our guests to indulge in.

We proudly support Hilton’s Travel with Purpose – an economic, social and governance strategy to drive responsible travel and tourism. We aim to champion the cause for sustainability and environmental activism in Bahrain’s hospitality industry. To that end, we have eradicated single-use plastic in the property. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? This question has guided me my whole career until this very day – “will it spark joy?” I have always believed that happy team members create happy guests. So in every decision I make, I ask myself this question: will my actions spark happiness and positivity in my team members and therefore, spread to our guests? As we empower our team members, I always give them this final thought, to ask themselves this question whenever they decide. After all, joy and positivity are what we want to leave our guests and team members with. n

This involves creating an environment that is both secure and comfortable and encourages people to explore their true potential, and capabilities and expand their horizons. By embodying these values, I was able to inspire, trust, and motivate my team and create a culture of excellence. What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? One of the biggest challenges for the hospitality industry as a whole was bouncing back after the Covid-19 pandemic, the abrupt halt in travel and tourism was a major setback. Nevertheless, these challenges provided us with valuable lessons as a team; that ultimately contributed to our success in the year 2022. It was the most prosperous year after 2014 for InterContinental Regency. Furthermore, our success in 2022 was not only limited to financial achievements. It was also a testament to our strength and flexibility as a team while demonstrating unwavering resilience and ensuring our guests received the full attention during their stay.

Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? With an exceptional 43 years of history, our hotel has had the privilege of becoming an integral part of countless guests’ lives. Furthermore, over the years, we have had the honour of hosting and serving individuals who have chosen InterContinental as a backdrop for their most cherished and memorable moments. It has also been there for guests during their achievements such as graduation or even landing their first job. The hotel has been a haven for those seeking solace during times of transition, such as finding their first home. We are grateful to have played a part in their journey. At InterContinental, we take pride in understanding the significance of the stories that have unfolded within our walls. Bahrain’s hospitality industry will definitely thrive in the coming years. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? It’s kind of fun to do the impossible! What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? The pandemic following our ambitious renovation proved to be a challenge. It was, however, a memorable experience and we learned a lot from it. We have achieved many incredible things over the past few years, including staff development and promotions. We also implemented the zero plastic project, becoming the first hotel in Bahrain to be certified by Green Globe. Additionally, we have won several awards both locally and internationally. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? We are a passionate team and experts at what we do. We are dedicated to providing exceptional service and going above and beyond while being attentive to our guests’ needs and exceeding their expectations. Bahrain’s Leaders in Hospitality

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership that you learned, and from whom?

To lead with kindness, humanity & sincerity, and to always remember that it is a privilege to be a leader with the ability to influence others in a positive way. I have observed this from our General Manager; Bernard de Villèle who is a mentor to me and who is a bit of a legend in the industry and it inspired me. I found these useful in both the professional and personal aspects of my life. Do you have any major plans for the property?

Delivering Excellence In conversation with Michelle Reynolds, Spa Director at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

The hotel is in an ongoing process of elevating our guests’ experience. We are currently refreshing our spa boutique, in partnership with local business owners and we will be officially launching the new collection in the next few weeks. We are also very excited to soon be offering the first Medical Manicure and Pedicure Studios in the kingdom, led by the world-famous Bastian Gonzales. Since we met last year, have there been any significant changes for you or the property? Working in an ever-evolving industry, change is the only constant thing. At The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, we always change for the better, ensuring a relaxing and energized experience for our guests at all times. In fact, aside from our signature ESPA products, we have recently added Valmont products and services to our Spa menu. We are extremely proud to work exclusively with this Swiss Brand and to give our guests and members the ultimate in Facial treatments, with the world’s most celebrated skin care provider. What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? The pandemic was a challenge for all of us and whilst I don’t wish to mention it too much, we were all badly impacted, as many experts in the field chose to leave the industry. Therefore, the training and retention of our ladies & gentlemen is an absolute must to ensure our high standards are met. On a personal note, I was extremely proud that we had a 100% engagement score on the latest employee engagement survey

I was also added to our company’s Advisory Board for Bahrain and Saudi Arabia and was able to be part of the Spa Taskforce to assist a new sister property opening in Saudi Arabia. This experience was extremely valuable for me as I was able to offer my advice and experience to this newly formed team helping them open the property on the right path.

I am very proud to work at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain as we have a wonderful culture and the most respected luxury brand in the industry.

As a team, we are also incredibly proud as we were awarded the General Managers Award of Excellence for exceptional service and financial performance. Other than a great team, is there one unique quality that makes your hotel stand out in Bahrain? I am very proud to work at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain as we have a wonderful culture and the most respected luxury brand in the industry. Our General Manager leads from the front, he believes

in continuously adding value and is laser-focused on excellence in everything we do. You will find this focus and mentality throughout our property, from the service we provide to the Ladies and Gentlemen who deliver it. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? I believe that the greatest challenge facing our industry will be the hiring and retention of hospitality-minded talent. Long gone are the days when you enter the business at the bottom and work your way up to senior leadership, as many graduates are looking to enter management level straight out of school. However, despite it being the greatest challenge, there is still hope for this incredible industry, and I believe that if we share our professional passion with the younger generation, and provide them with room to grow, they will see that a career in hospitality is an excellent and rewarding career path to follow. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? My favourite personal quote is: Nothing happens until you decide. The other quote I love is: Our attitude determines our approach to life. n

One of our notable upcoming projects involves implementing a heating system for our penthouse swimming pool. We have a Planned Preventative Maintenance program scheduled each year during Ramadan which ensures that our property remains in optimal condition. Considering that our hotel is still new, we focus on maintaining our existing facilities and services at the highest standards which is vital in delivering an exceptional guest experience. What have been the significant changes for you or the property over the last year?

Focus on Innovation In conversation with Alban Dutemple, Cluster General Manager, SwissBelsuites Admiral Juffair.

We have introduced an F&B program where we revamp our Weekend Theme Night every trimester, ensuring a dynamic and evolving dining experience. It currently features concepts such as Ribs and Wings; Thursday Fiesta, a delectable spread of Mexican and Latino delicacies; and Indonesian Indulge with a Japanese Twist, offering authentic Indonesian dishes and different kinds of sushi. Another distinctive feature is our Never Late Breakfast and the extended breakfast concept, available over the weekend. We’ve also introduced promotions in our bar and lounge, Mysteria along with live music featuring Latino and international beats, along with a saxophone player. What have been your biggest challenges (and successes) over the past few years? A major challenge was launching the hotel amidst the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. This demanded intricate planning and adaptability to ensure the safety and comfort of guests and staff. On the flip side, our accomplishments have been rewarding. We have achieved commendable ratings on platforms such as Booking.com (8.9) and TripAdvisor (99.3). Receiving consistently high reviews has resulted in the prestigious recognition of being a top-ranked hotel in Manama and achieving the esteemed ‘Traveler’s Choice Award 2023’. These penthouses have been designed to cater not only to families seeking comfort and indulgence but also to those looking to host intimate gatherings in an elegant setting. What challenges and opportunities do you see for Bahrain’s hospitality industry in the coming years? From a hotelier’s perspective, an additional development plan is required for hosting more international exhibitions to increase

the influx of business travellers and tourists. The absence of a tour series, where visitors explore multiple countries, including Bahrain, alongside neighbouring Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Dubai, limits potential visitors’ staying in Bahrain, thereby reducing potential hospitality earnings. The high number of new hotel openings also poses a challenge as the guests might be spread thinly across all new and existing hotels. This situation can be concerning if MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) doesn’t experience a corresponding increase. Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you?

The high number of new hotel openings also poses a challenge as the guests might be spread thinly across all new and existing hotels.

Yes, according to my long experience, one of my favourite sayings is: The past brings you where you are, it won’t take you where you want to go. As a Cluster General Manager in the hospitality industry, I believe that, while the past provides valuable insights, my focus will always remain on innovation, adaptability, and forward-thinking strategies that will position our Admiral Suites for growth and excellence. Every step forward is driven by a vision for the future rather than relying on and dwelling on historical achievements. n

Did you know that there’s a new spot in town where you could literally dine under the stars? Adliya, Bahrain’s hip and happening dining district does not disappoint, with new restaurants and lounges popping up ever so often. We want to introduce you to a new spot that recently took us on a journey through the galaxy! We visited The Room, one of Bahrain’s upand-coming dining spots. The Room is a chic and modern space with an atmosphere that lures you in and keeps you there. The food is a fusion of flavours that ties in quite nicely with the cosy environment. Whether you’re looking to gather your friends for a casual dinner or want an intimate setting for the evening, The Room’s got you covered. Each detail in the lounge has been carefully designed to transport you to a celestial world unlike one we’ve seen before on the island!

Journey Through Stars at This New Dining Spot in the Heart of Manama!

Onto the music - with Bahrain-based DJ and Music Producer, Julian Mesa taking charge behind the deck as resident DJ, an electric and energetic vibe engulfs The Room. We’ve had the pleasure of following Julian through his journey on the island. In his words, “Music should elevate us when we are happy, it should complement the words that the soul wants to say.” We sure were left elevated after one visit to this new lounge! Last but certainly not least, the food at this lounge is a treat for the senses. We know a perfectly good Angus when we taste one and that is exactly what The Room serves up, whether it’s the Ribeye you order or the Galaxy Sliders. Interestingly, the Sliders were prepared with “charcoal buns”! We also tried the Wagyu Tacos and Celestial Wings and we recommend both. The Room’s Sharing menu is the perfect guide to your group’s favourite items. Hands down, they’ve hit the right mark with great food, excellent music, and a starry ambience! We recommend checking out The Room for a fun and memorable dining experience! Reserve your table via WhatsApp on +97338877331. n

A Journey Into Wellness Travel & Lifestyle editor Christine Warren finds the ultimate serenity sanctuary at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som

H

aving recently received a lifechanging diagnosis of stage 3 lymphedema that’s currently incurable but manageable, I’m now actively running down the road to wellness. Since receiving the test results I’ve been working hard on my fitness; the toll of daily hospital visits, lymph system treatments and four hours a day in a specialised machine had me dreaming of a perfect paradise of peace—Marhaba Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som!

Wellness Redefined

Located on the stunning coastline of the Northern quarter of Qatar, Zulal is a luxury retreat that truly redefines the wellness experience. A tranquil and idyllic haven, Zulal’s well-being philosophy

26 Bahrain Confidential September - November 2023

Travel perfectly blends Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine (TAIM) with a holistic bespoke health and well-being approach. My initial assessment began before I even arrived in the 280,000 square metres of luxurious beauty that was to be my home for five days. The Zulal team took great care, with gentle guidance, to help me understand my wellness goals and it was clear that my focus had to be on reconnecting with myself and on mindfulness for long-lasting lifestyle impact whilst also having specialised treatments for my condition. Set around a beautifully tranquil circle planted with herbs used not only by the apothecary but also by the magician chefs in the kitchen, Zulal offers two distinctly different yet interconnecting experiences. Zulal Discovery is a unique concept for families wishing to spend meaningful time together, take a digital detox and reconnect in a healthy environment whereas Zulal Serenity is tailored for adult guests only for a total mind and body reset. Stepping out of Zulal’s luxury limousine after just over an hour’s drive from Hamad International Airport and knowing nothing of the Northern Quarter of Qatar I am genuinely stunned at how beautiful it is. Arriving at Zulal I immediately sense I’m somewhere spectacular and special. An instant calm washed over me and my energy was becalmed to its surroundings, soothing my soul. Little did I know then just how transformative this stay would be.

A welcome tea ceremony greeted me in the spectacular House of Wisdom that houses a staggering array of books.

A welcome tea ceremony greeted me in the spectacular House of Wisdom that houses a staggering array of books. With over 200 teas curated by Zulal’s very own in-house Tea Master I settled for a cup of chamomile whilst refreshing myself with a cold towel. My wonderful personal butler checks me in and escorts me by buggy to one of sixty perfectly appointed and designed villas. There’s a private plunge pool leading on to the stunning natural beach, so my wellness journey is definitely starting in style. Its exclusive coastal position ensures Zulal is totally secluded, and the mangroves only add to the enchantment. Its tranquility is magical and has the soothing effect of affording me eight hours of blissful sleep.

Wellness Embraced

Waking refreshed beyond measure it’s time for breakfast. Having worked for years with a celebrity chef and reviewed countless restaurants as part of my job means I’m hopelessly in love with food. I’m such a foodie even my pets, Frank and Furta are sausage dogs! Expecting tiny, tasteless portions I was preparing myself for mind over fatter but at Zulal journeys of true culinary delight awaited along with whimsical flights of fancy mocktails. Zulal’s chefs are magicians as I didn’t think it possible to create Michelin style food that tastes and looks delicious yet is calorie controlled.

Journey Inwards

My carefully curated, personalised plan began with a one-to-one breathing class to ground and teach me sustainable techniques. Next up, a private Tai Chi session where I quickly realized that my week needed much more of this. I absolutely adored it. Having never tried it before, this elegant form of exercise was challenging and relaxing at the same time. Tougher than strength training, my post Tai Chi Tadleek signature massage was much needed. Zulal’s sensational spa and treatments are second to none. Their worldclass therapists’ ability to tailor lymphatic drainage massages combined with physiotherapy treatments to my chronic condition was impressive. Daily check-ins with my dedicated Health & Wellness Advisor allowed me to adapt and change my schedule as my journey progressed.

Journey Forwards

After five gloriously uplifting and joyous days of embracing and enjoying all my treatments; learning about Traditional Arabic & Islamic Medicine concepts; discovering detox foods can taste outstandingly delicious, it was having guidance on how to connect with myself that has affected me most. The philosophy and spirt of Zulal is embedded in “Jai Thai” which is service from the heart and that clearly shines through. Just being in Zulal is a spiritual experience, a friendly atmosphere with attentive, caring and connected staff in wonderfully tranquil surroundings. I’m told that Zulal means pure water and whilst I’m leaving Zulal rejuvenated, reconnected, calmer, brighter and most definitely lighter—Zulal isn’t leaving me as I take new-found habits of drinking more pure water and daily breathing exercises along with its spirit carried in my heart. Marhaba to the new me! n

Beauty in Everything An Interview with Sabina Torres of Inndor

32 Bahrain Confidential September - November 2023

Fashion

D

Drawing inspiration from the mundane, and exploring cultures and destinations while translating visual cues into true masterpieces are just some of Sabina Torres’ talents. As co-founder and director of Inndor, an Interior Design company in Bahrain, Torres has put her name on some iconic locations on the island such as Bahrain Financial Harbour, RAK Art Foundation, The Ritz-Carlton, and Gallery 21 among others. We got in touch with the talented designer to learn more about her and the work she’s well known for. Tell us a little about yourself, your work and what brought you to Bahrain. I am a luxury interior designer who finds beauty everywhere while pursuing my passion for photography and travel. Half Spanish, half Colombian, I was born and raised in the Catalan pre-Pyrenees by a family who loved to travel. From a young age, I visited marvellous places.

I am a luxury interior designer who finds beauty everywhere while pursuing my passion for photography and travel. After studying English in NYC and Boston, followed by earning a BA in interior design from Spain’s oldest school of design (attended by artists like Picasso), I accepted a job as an interior design manager for a 5-star resort and hotel chain in Egypt. Directing the interior designs of large construction sites as a young woman in an Arab country was both challenging and exciting.

With plans to start locally and later expand operations throughout the Middle East and worldwide, this exciting new chapter is just beginning. What inspired you to become an interior designer? Born and raised in the Spanish mountains near the French border, I developed an interest in interior design at the early age of nine. This fascination grew as I observed the interiors of people’s homes and noticed unique design elements. Even then, I began drawing and planning my ideal bedroom, creating collages with furniture cut-outs from magazines. As I grew older, I naturally gravitated towards artrelated subjects in my studies. When it came time to choose a university major, my parents encouraged me to pursue engineering, architecture, or business. However, driven by my passion for interior design, I remained steadfast in my decision to follow my dreams. My enthusiasm for interior design was evident in my academic success. Before even completing my studies, I had the opportunity to work on numerous interior design projects during Spain’s construction boom in 2008. In retrospect, becoming an interior designer seemed like a natural progression as everything fell into place while pursuing what I truly loved. Tell us about your creative process – from an idea to the final result – while designing a space. The creative process for any project begins in our daily lives, even before receiving a new project brief. We draw inspiration from various sources such as observing the details of places we visit, keeping up with design trends, learning about manufacturing techniques, travelling, acquiring new skills, engaging with people of different mindsets, reading, meditating, and connecting with nature.

I ventured to London (UK) in 2011 to explore new opportunities driven by my love for interior design. There, I had incredible experiences including designing the 4th most expensive mansion globally and working on high-end properties worldwide – from Russia to China.

After receiving an inquiry, the first step is to comprehend the client’s needs, desired style, space functionality, timeline, and budget (if any) to determine how we can best assist them. Our scope of work depends on the client’s requirements, ranging from consultations for thoughts or solutions on specific matters to full turn-key projects where we address all aspects including styling and accessorization.

After ten years based in London, Bahrain became one of my top choices for my next move. The island’s unique blend of modernity and tradition coupled with magnificent beaches and warm-hearted people inspired this decision and brought me here.

Our creative process involves numerous considerations such as building regulations, material suitability, maintenance, quality lighting, and more. As luxury interior designers, we strive to create not only aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces but also

Bahrain Confidential September - November 2023 33

Fashion elevate designs by thoroughly examining every detail and aspect. What’s your favourite location you’ve designed so far and why? While every project is unique, the fourth most expensive mansion in the world holds a special place in my heart. For three years, I had the opportunity to work on its interior design, styling, and decoration— a dream come true. Collaborating with top professionals in the industry, our creative process never took a hit even when we were faced with budget limitations. The exceptional quality produced was evident in even the smallest details, from custom leather upholstered clothes hangers to exquisite silver and gold cutlery and fine bone china. As an interior designer, I found myself involved in tasks I had never imagined, such as selecting coloured fish and corals for an aquarium to complement the spa’s interior design. Each area showcased a distinctive style according to the client’s wishes, ranging from art-deco, neo-classical, modern, and Edwardian to baroque. This project was both a steep learning curve and an incredible opportunity for career growth. What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as an interior designer in Bahrain? After working on large projects in prime locations, I became accustomed to working with highly skilled professionals. However, the transition to Bahrain and working with local suppliers and contractors required me to adapt and understand their way of working. Unfortunately, I have encountered situations where incorrect information was provided, schedules were postponed, communication issues arose, and there was a lack of knowledge, skills, and poor quality of work. As a luxury interior designer, I hold high standards and refuse to compromise on quality. Thus, I have learned to be cautious of delays and lack of expertise. I have to closely supervise and meticulously inspect every detail, even when working with reputable contractors. Project management in this region takes longer compared to other countries, and clients often underestimate the effort we put into our work. This has been an important lesson for me.

34 Bahrain Confidential September - November 2023

What are some upcoming projects you’re excited about? Gallery 21’s Courtyard Lounge will be transformed into an Italian extension of the main restaurant, inspired by the beautiful Amalfi coast in Italy. This project has been a long-awaited endeavour, as it was the first conceptual project I designed when I moved to Bahrain in 2022. Due to various external reasons, the concept couldn’t be executed until recently. Now, I am thrilled to witness the stunning transformation of this space. During the Ramadan period, we commenced making small changes to Trader Vic’s bar. We have also meticulously designed the interior of the bar extension and we are gradually working towards a complete refurbishment of the existing bar and restaurant. The implementation of the design will present its own set of challenges since the outlets will remain fully operational. However, I am eagerly anticipating the positive outcome of our efforts. Additionally, we’re excited about expanding to new geographies with some upcoming collaborations in Saudi Arabia, the UK and the US. We have big projects lined up in Adliya, including the creation of a couple of lounges with different themes. We are also involved in enhancing the interior of the Ritz Carlton Nail Salon and Spa boutique, as well as contributing to the design of a newly built hotel in Seef. Last but not least, we are thrilled about the opportunity to refurbish a rental apartment building in our own distinct residential style. n
