Kingdom of Bahrain which has paved the way for motorsports in the Middle East, under the guidance and leadership of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. We, at Prodrive, have had a long-held ambition to compete in the Dakar Rally as has the Kingdom of Bahrain and today, with a joint venture between Prodrive and Mumtalakat, and with Prodrive International’s foray into Dakar, this has led to the birth of BRX. It is worth noting that last year the Kingdom of Bahrain sponsored the winning car in the inaugural Dakar Rally in the Middle East. This year, they wanted to take things a step further and enter their own team and raise their own flag in the Dakar Rally 2021.

We are extraordinarily lucky here at Prodrive to have a clean sheet of paper to design what we believe is, in our opinion, the ultimate Dakar car.

What are the team's aspirations in the upcoming Dakar Rally? The Dakar Rally is one of the most challenging competitions in motorsport with only 69% of participating cars making it across the finish line, but BRX have big ambitions for when we line up on the start line in January 2021. The course for the 43rd edition of the Dakar Rally will be brand new and the most unforgiving one to date. When you go to a new category of motor racing with regular competitors who have a lot of experience, you cannot be complacent, you have to accept that there is much to learn, but I’ll be disappointed if, when you are sitting on the start line, everybody doesn’t see us as a potential winner. We've learned that BRX will be using advanced cars specifically designed by Prodrive – can you share more about this? What makes it so special? We are extraordinarily lucky here at Prodrive to have

a clean sheet of paper to design what we believe is, in our opinion, the ultimate Dakar car. The bespoke car, is set to compete in the T1 category. Based on the route for the upcoming race, our team have created a four-wheel drive car, powered by a 3.5-litre turbocharged petrol V6. The 4-wheel drive car has a high tensile steel structure, and a lightweight carbon fibre body, combined with a powerful V6 turbocharged engine to allow it to traverse the toughest terrain at high speed. To travel the vast distances across the longest stages of the Dakar Rally, the car carries up to 500 litres of fuel. The exterior is very distinctive, with its striking red livery, combined with styling evolved by Callum Designs, headed by Ian Callum, one of the world’s leading automotive designers of the past 30 years and former design director at Jaguar. This car was not only two years in the making it was probably another two years in the gestation period and thinking about it alone. How confident are you going into the race with this vehicle? With the wealth of motorsport experience within BRX team ranks, we feel well-positioned to be a forerunner when BRX sets out from Jeddah next year.

22 Bahrain Confidential August 2020

How do you prepare for an event where virtually everything is an unknown? There’s no doubt that the global pandemic and the current situation has imposed many challenges across different sports and events world-wide. Prodrive is very adaptable and if it means working 24/7 to complete everything in time that is what will happen. For the time being, everyone is working from home and the manufacturing side is well in hand to be completed on schedule. Looking beyond the BRX team, how important is this race for the country? When you think of Dakar you automatically think of adventure, you think of wide-open spaces, you think of crossing inhospitable landscapes and Saudi has all that in multitudes. We can go from the mountain region to the desert region to wonderful landscapes all around the country and what Dakar will do for Saudi is bring that wonderful adventure, that excitement and that wonderful landscape that is Saudi Arabia to the rest of the world. For Bahrain, it isthe kingdom’s latest foray into the motorsport world and represents the first Middle Eastern team to enter the race with its own completely new vehicle. n

History of

Lamborghini Colors Bahrain Confidential interviews Giovanni Perosino, Chief Commercial Officer at Lamborghini.

A

re SUVs going to become the future of performance driving? Throughout the history of the automotive industry, manufacturers have developed new models in line with trends and customer’s needs, be it coupes or limousines. The same can be said about performance SUVs, which have seen a sharp incline in the last few years. Manufacturers are introducing vehicles that they would not have been able to make in the past and are proving quite profitable for brands. When we speak about the Urus for example, we have developed a car that encompasses the super sports car DNA of the Aventador or Huracan, in turn creating our best-selling model. It is a Lamborghini through and through and it is as at home on the road as it is on the track.

Super SUVs are indeed proving more dynamic than super sports cars; however the two are very different. While we may see an increase in more SUVs, the super sports car will still play a crucial role in the identity of a brand. For Lamborghini for instance, the future of performance driving means exploring new technologies, harnessing the power of electrification and developing super sports cars that encompass our legacy in order for our customers to expect the unexpected. Can you share a bit about the history of Lamborghini colors? How have the trends changed over the years? Lamborghini has always paid attention to color, and puts optimum customer satisfaction as a key consideration when choosing a color for our cars. It all started with production of the Miura in 1966,

Feature which was very progressive for its time. The stylistic elements of fine design, and the innovations in color that have traditionally characterized Lamborghini super sports cars, began with the Miura. 763 Miuras were delivered throughout the world, in three versions produced until 1972, and in some 60 different colors.

Lamborghini has always paid attention to color, and puts optimum customer satisfaction as a key consideration when choosing a color for our cars.

This trend continued again with the production of the Lamborghini Countach and Lamborghini Diablo, which wore iconic colors like Metallic Blue Tahiti and Thirty Metallic, continuing Lamborghini’s pioneering use of bold color. This has continued into modern times with the most recent Lamborghini Models and has become a staple of our identity. Producing cars that stand out with a wide variety of colors available for unique types of customers is something that is very much part of our DNA.

We solidified this even more in 2016 with the creation of the Ad Personam Studio department. This innovative complex of creativity and design located in Sant'Agata Bolognese provides our customers the opportunity, among other things, to live an exclusive experience where the cars are created for them with over 250 color options to choose from. How has customization shaped the identity of Lamborghini? Personalization is one of the biggest trends in the automotive industry today as more manufacturers look for ways to appeal to their customers. At Lamborghini, we have been doing this from our very inception. Ever since Lamborghini was founded, customers have been able to choose from a wide range of colors as well as the freedom to choose their own, ensuring a truly unique creation. This is a staple of our design philosophy. With our Ad Personam program, we now shifted the focus to allow customers the ultimate freedom and design the car of

their dreams. Customers have an infinite number of possible combinations, from the colors to the materials: from the logo on the seat that may be hand stitched instead of branded, to the initials stitched inside the vehicle’s interior, or even a custom color, all meeting the company’s exacting standards of quality. Our customers in turn receive the full Lamborghini experience. Along with the Ad Personam program, customers will have a team of experts to support them through every step of the process inclusive with a guided tour of the factory where they can also preview some of the configuration possibilities for their Lamborghini. Lamborghini is always thinking dynamically about the best solutions to challenges, and our new virtual Ad Personam studio consultations have been carefully devised to support clients who, in times where we are all cautious about international travel, still want the special, one-to-one experience of creating an entirely personalized car. We still look forward to welcoming clients to Sant’ Agata Bolognese in the future but we expect more than 150 Ad Personam consultations to take place virtually within this year, and continuing as an option for the future. n

Finally, I add a background color that fits the artwork. How do you know when an artwork is finished? After I’m done with an artwork, I like to give it some time to “rest”. I look back at it after a few hours or so; once I’m satisfied with the outcome, I know that the art is ready. Otherwise, I’d add small details to finish it off. What advice would you say to aspiring artists? The best advice I would give is that, if you’re inspired by other artists don’t copy them. Instead, find your own style; play around with your mediums and materials until you create your own. Originality is really the key. Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I like Amwaj because it is quiet, peaceful and is close to the sea. I enjoy the beach life! n

The effects of Covid-19 have made a permanent impact – human patterns of spending and consumption have changed drastically.

drastically. From a time where every luxury was a need, we are now forced to stick to our needs. No amount of luxury gave any advantage to anyone. It is

a perfect time to let go off all redundant things. I personally enjoyed that people were learning new skills and reliving their hobbies. It also gave us time to connect with our loved ones, making us adapt to the new normal. I took it as a perfect time to dwell into the past, to pause and to reflect. As a life coach, I did this process of reflection by answering simple questions…Very useful… Try it out! • What new activities or old hobbies did you enjoy doing? • What’s one thing you would change about your lifestyle permanently? • What’s the one redundant activity you were forced to let go of that was previously impossible? • Identify your closest people. How can you manage to keep in touch on a regular basis? • What’s the one life lesson you remember moving ahead? This made me aware of the basics. I felt more centered prioritizing what mattered and will keep these lessons in mind moving ahead. n

Getting into the details, the shoe’s upper is made from an engineered mesh, treated with welded overlays and a tongue-free ‘step-in’ construction which ensures a comfortable ankle fit. Then, the shoe’s jagged design combines with a more technical lacing system to create a true statement look. Meanwhile, the use of a full-length wrapped Boost™ midsole brings the ultimate squish. The AMH Island Classic Charity Tournament is the hospital’s major fundraiser that was first instituted 23 years ago. The charity tournament primarily revolves around raising funds to modernize the hospital but every year, a portion of the proceeds are set aside for community outreach events. Several outreach programs for those in need have been made possible through the Island Classic; this includes elderly care homes, children with special needs and more. Last year, the tournament had raised BD26,500 in cash and BD39,000 in kind, according to Dr. George Cheriyan.

or over a century, the American Mission Hospital has been providing care for the people in Bahrain. However, the hospital’s ideals still remain unchanged in over a hundred years of its service. The institution has proved to be an integral part of Bahrain’s healthcare industry especially amidst this pandemic. Just recently, we had the chance to speak to AMH’s Corporate CEO, Dr. George Cheriyan about the latest happenings as well as the much anticipated AMH Island Classic Charity Tournament.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, AMH has only managed to cover community outreach programs through online media this year. The programs were aimed to provide psychological support for adults and children coping with COVID-19 and isolating at home. Nevertheless, AMH will still continue its muchanticipated Island Classic this year with all precautionary measures and guidelines observed. Dr. George says that they do not expect a drop in teams this year but rather an increase in participating teams; since this will be the first tournament since the start of the pandemic. “The coronavirus crisis has made us more resolute and stronger, to remind ourselves that the human spirit is resilient and will overcome all challenges. The Island Classic embodies this spirit of playing the game for the greater good of quality healthcare for all, for which the American Mission Hospital exists”, Dr. George added. n

Are Schools in Bahrain Fully Prepared for

Remote Learning? Digital learning has become a critical resource for the current educational setup brought upon by the coronavirus pandemic.

F

or educators and parents at every level, one of the biggest worries has been the students’ access and ability to learn online.

In Bahrain, educational institutions have suspended classes on 28th February after the Ministry of Education announced that all public and private schools and universities, would be closed as Bahrain tightened measures to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

In March, Bahrain’s Ministry of Education (MOE) joined forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS), to power the Learning Portal for students all over Bahrain. The Kingdom has later on revealed that more than 140,000 in the country are using the electronic education portal.

The Indian School’s online classes use prerecorded videos of teachers which children can view at any time. The teachers come to school in small batches to shoot these videos which are then uploaded on the parent portal. The school has now also facilitated live online classes.

Meanwhile, many schools in the Kingdom easily transitioned to online learning, continuing classes “like normal” through Google Classroom or Zoom.

The Asian School has gone online using Zoom for live classes. For students from grades 1 to 8 – an online report card is made available to parents based on past performance and internals.

Many schools in the Kingdom easily transitioned to online learning, continuing classes “like normal” through Google Classroom or Zoom.

Meanwhile, The New Indian School’s online classes use Google Classroom and Zoom. Teachers are currently receiving training in small batches to learn to efficiently use the online platforms. Despite the tools at the teachers’ disposal, many of their students aren’t able to connect due to the lack of equipment, stable internet connection and even support at home to keep them focused on school work.

The future of online learning

Are schools providing the right learning resources and technology for teachers? To maintain the quality of education, teachers should remain relevant and re-orient their practice toward designing learning tasks that challenge and motivate students. However, from preschool to college, technological gaps present overwhelming issues that hinder educators from giving their maximum capacity. We contacted a few of the top schools in Bahrain, to know more.

The pandemic presents a magnificent opportunity for educational institutions, ministries and telecommunications sector to help the school system into transitioning into a more resilient one – not only during the current outbreak but for the next pandemic as well. In the end, the real question still remains unanswered: How will the educational institutions and the local community in Bahrain help ensure that every one of the students has equal access to learning resources? One thing we know for sure is that remote learning must not allow students to become more remote. n

However, the benefits to our business and economic ecosystems are seldom discussed. According to Gallup polls, the cost of lost productivity due to obesity and other chronic health conditions results in about $153 billion in the US and an estimated $27 billion in the UK annually. If 10% of the total population commits to high adherence to a plant-forward diet containing soy, societal cost savings in the United Kingdom are estimated at $14 billion, however, more research is needed to verify how much societal cost savings can be achieved.

Obesity rates are steadily increasing in Bahrain, which puts our population at higher risk of noncommunicable diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes (which are also the 2 leading causes of death in Bahrain), and cancer.
