When society is barren, they are able to transport themselves and immerse in the freedom of rebellion that can be compared to London’s Roaring 1920s and New York’s grooving 1980s. Portrayal Man is an olfactive depiction of 1920s bohemian culture. With Vetiver at its heart and top notes of Violet Leaves, Portrayal Man emits a dandy yet masculine impression. ow was 2018 for the hotel? A lot of things happened in 2018 – it was a year of restructuring and improvement. This included the renovation of the convention center, the refurbishment of the restaurant La Pergola, Al Waha and Sherlock Holmes as well as our recent collaboration with Giancarlo Perbellini (a multiMichelin starred Italian chef), which proved to be a good addition to our collection of restaurants. What is your plan for the rest of 2019? We have several projects lined up for the rest of the year.
Our health club will soon be renovated with state-of-the-art equipment while our restaurant, Fusions, will be remodeled as ‘Fusions by Tala’. Tala Bashmi is a talented young Bahraini chef who has grown with The Gulf Hotel. It will be refashioned to cater to the younger generations like Tala, with fusion dishes and
Bahraini flair, and an outdoor terrace with stunning views of Bahrain. Sato is also on our agenda – we plan to refurbish it towards the end of the year. The new Sato will keep its Japanese authenticity but will be modernized. Sato is already beautiful. What do you aim to achieve with a refurbishment? I feel Sato lacks natural light so that’s one thing we’ll be focusing on. The sushi bar will also be brought inside the restaurant so people can enjoy it fully without feeling isolated. What are the current challenges faced by the hotel? All hotels are going through very tough competition, especially when it comes to room rates. This is in addition to the new hotels coming up in Bahrain. On the positive side, we saw growth in the first quarter in 2019. Some big conferences have helped the hospitality sector, and we expect more. We also anticipate more Russian tourists coming soon, which should help the next quarter. What is your vision for The Gulf Hotel Bahrain? The vision is to take partnerships and alliances with multinational players in order to be more competitive in the market. n

Stay cool this summer

eeping active in a hot country can be difficult but, it is possible. During the hot weather, you may lack motivation but, you need to remember that in order to reach your fitness goals, you should stay active throughout the year. Pick your location Exercising in the heat can be avoided depending on where, and when you choose to exercise. For an outdoor activity, try to exercise in the early morning, or late evening, when the temperature is cooler. You can use these times to swim, walk, jog, or cycle. Being active doesn’t have to involve intense exercise. Exercising outside might not appeal to you but, there are plenty of indoor activities to try where you can control the temperature. Try a new exercise class, attend a personal training session, or exercise at home, at HV Holistic Health, we can write you a program to follow at home. Dress for success To avoid overheating, you should aim to wear lightweight and breathable clothing, because this allows air to help to cool your body. When choosing what to wear, take the colour into consideration. Lighter coloured clothing will absorb less heat, in comparison to darker colours. If you are outside during daytime hours, make sure you’re wearing a high SPF, especially on your face, and chest.
Hydrate before it’s too late Around 20% of your daily intake of fluid will come from food, the rest should be from water. Ideally, you should be drinking 400-800ml every hour. We often don’t consume enough water during hotter days, simply because we don’t take into account how much we sweat, and the effect of the air conditioning. Warning signs Knowing the warning signs of heat exhaustion, and dehydration can be very useful. If you notice the following symptoms; dark yellow urine, dizziness, a rapid heart rate, and lack of energy, you are probably dehydrated. Drink coconut water or other electrolyte drink, to help increase your hydration levels. If you notice a weak, rapid heart rate, muscular cramps, dizziness, and heavy sweating, aim to get yourself in the shade or a cooler space because your body is overheating. Noticing these signs early can help prevent illness, and in worst cases, death. If you’re taking medications, you should check with your doctor that your medication doesn’t affect your response to temperature control. I was then put into a training suit and straps were added around my gluts, legs and arms that were then connected by electrical cables to the EMS machine. It looked like I was going to be electrocuted, but of course, everything is perfectly safe.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) creates muscle contraction using electric impulses. One-on-one sessions are conducted under the supervision of a qualified trainer. It was an intense workout that left me at the end of the session dripping with sweat and my muscles felt sore for a couple of days after the initial sessions. Verdict: Without doubt EMS training offers a solid workout, and I quite enjoyed my sessions, but despite Goggling EMS training I found no evidence to back the reports that one weekly twenty-minute session is equal to three 45-minute traditional gym sessions. 'Tetra Conch' Travel Experience in Georgia Dhanyasree M shares her religious explorations in Georgia.
G
eorgia, the most popular country among the Caucasian lines, enchants the visitors from the Middle East for almost a decade.
Our travel to Georgia was in June 2018, during the Eid vacation in Bahrain, and I heard the term 'tetra conch' for the first time during the travel. The Greek word implying “four shells" is a building with four equal apses in four sides and this is how I would describe my travel at Georgia too. The country presented the travelers with diverse experiences as Cathedrals and monasteries that dated back to 4th century and before, scenaries that varied from green valleys to snowcapped mountains, historical locations and the city bustling with metro life.
Georgian Cathedrals and Monasteries Georgia was under the influence of many cultures and religions. Currently, it is under the religious influence of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, where Eastern and Western cultures meet alike. Cathedrals and monasteries in Georgia attract tourists from diverse countries with religious, archeological, and historical significances. The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral at Tbilsi, was the first cathedral that we had visited. A world heritage site, it is believed to house the mantle

Travel of Jesus Christ under a 17th century ciborium. We arrived at the Cathedral on a hot afternoon, and the first thing that captured my attention was the graves at the church floor. The engraved graves are part of the culture as the cathedral is famous for the grave of Sidonia, who had died with the Christ's mantle in her hand. I struggled to move forward without stepping on them in the crowd. Candles were available for the worshippers at the rate of 5 Lari (700 Fills) to lit across the altar. The heat emanated from the crowd and the candles soon forced us out of the cathedral.
The country presented the travelers with diverse experiences as Cathedrals and monasteries that dated back to 4th century and before. Bodbe monastery at the Sighnaghi, was recovering after the monsoon showers as we reached. I quickly passed the crowd at the grave of St. Nino, one of the 4th century female evangelist of Georgians, around whom the monastery came into structure. I was more pacified by the tall Cypress trees surrounding the monastery, and the enchanting view of Al Zani Valley. The rain soaked flowers and the distant view of Caucasus Mountains set perfect aura for a meditation. The Jvari Monastery, also associated with St. Nino and was built in the 6th century. Located at the rocky mountaintop, the Monastery offers the panoramic view of Mtshketa, and the union of the Mtkvari
and Aragvi rivers. Jvari means ‘Monastery of Cross’ and it is believed that the large wooden cross at the monastery is able to work miracles. The monastery is surrounded with wild flowers and butterflies in all hues, adding charm to minds of visitors. We tasted 'Churchkhela', the Georgian candle shaped candy for the first time in one of the shops near Jvari monastery. This popular candy is made with the almonds, walnuts, hazelnut, raisins and chocolate stringed and dipped into a mixture of grape juice or fruit juices and flour.
Gregeti Trinity Church was the last cathedral that we had visited and for me it was just a scene out of Le Miserables. The wind howled and the winter chill seeped into the spine as we climbed the steep path to the church. Located on top of a mountain and surrounded by the vastness of nature, the 14th century church is trekkers' paradise. Gregeti Trinity Church was the only place where we were instructed to abide to the religious rules. There weren't many worshippers and the silence intensified the heavenly spirit of the sanctum. The only light inside the church was from the glowing candles and a priest stood at the entrance with his pensive glance to the horizon. "He pondered on the greatness and the living presence of God, on the mystery of eternity in the future and, even stranger, eternity in the past, on all the infinity manifest to his eyes and to his senses; and without seeking to comprehend the incomprehensible he contemplated these things." (Victor Hugo, Les MisĂŠrables) Prayers uttered, visions received, and knowledge perceived at these places for many centuries. Those were our destined moments in that expanse. n

We were treated to a range of cuisines during the trip, from a traditional Arabic lunch at the Arabian Tea House to the Mexican restaurant ‘ZOCO’ following the La Perle Show, a place to relax and enjoy the music and atmosphere of Latin America. ell us a bit about your background. What motivated you to pursue art? Growing up, I have always been interested in art. I’ve decided to study art formally in college to learn its technicalities, enhance my skills and develop an aesthetic sense. I am a Fine Arts postgraduate from the Banaras Hindu University in India. I work well with different mediums including pencil, charcoal, dry pastel, water colour, acrylic and oil.
For me, art is not a luxury but a necessity. What themes are you exploring and what does your art say to the world? The themes of my paintings include abstract figures along with surreal landscape with exaggerated color and glowing foliage. Using different mediums in my art, I want to convey a sense of harmony in understanding our relationship with nature. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw inspiration from my cultural roots as well as my experiences as I’ve progressed in life.

s part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands and Wyndham Garden Manama organized a Ramadan food pack distribution at the Al Fateh Mosque intersection in Juffair and Hoora traffic signal on May 13, 2019. This activity aims to spread the spirit of giving on this holy month. A total of 30 team members and hotel management volunteered in distributing the Ramadan food packs to all the motorist. Team members volunteer work involved time in packing the items, delivery as well as distributing them to people on the streets. The Ramadan Food packs are provided 30 minutes prior to iftar to enable motorists to break their fast conveniently. Ramada Hotel & Suites Amwaj Islands and Wyndham Garden Manama encouraged its team members on the act of volunteerism and to give back to the community. n

Children between ages of 7 and 16 were treated to themed Iftar buffets at the 3 hotels. The children enjoyed their time by trying a great variety of Ramadan dishes along with international options and desserts. The Conscious Relationship In her work as a Psychotherapist here in Bahrain, Fiona often meets individuals and couples seeking help with broken, dysfunctional or failed relationships. It seems age, sex, religion, and race are no barrier to these issues and some people seem to keep repeating the pattern of failure within subsequent relationships. When we first meet ‘the one’, we may feel those first stirrings of love as an exciting, joyful even very physical thing. When we see, or even think, of our significant other, our hearts beat faster, we may blush, tremble and feel delicious tingles throughout our bodies. Why then do those initial feelings of euphoria change, to instead leave us feeling dissatisfied and in conflict with our partner? Well Harville Hendrix in his book “Getting the Love you Want – A Guide for Couples” says this could be because there are unconscious drives underlying the attraction to a person. He believes we enter a relationship in an effort to heal ourselves from childhood wounds believing that our partner will bring us back into wholeness. The reverse is also then true, that our partners are looking for us to heal their emotional wounds. We are actually together in an unconscious relationship. When we become aware of this, we can together begin to foster a conscious relationship, bringing strength, compassion and harmony back to our love lives. Here are some tips to help bring your relationship into consciousness: 1. Your partner cannot read your mind, so take responsibility for communicating your needs and desires. 2. Learn to value your partner’s needs and wishes as highly as you value your own. 3. Acknowledge that you are not perfect; you too, like your partner have negative traits. Be compassionate. 4. Search inside yourself for strengths and traits you lack and work to develop resources to overcome them, rather than depending on, coercing or blaming your partner for your deficiencies. 5. Accept that a good marriage takes commitment, discipline, and the courage to grow and change. BE the partner you would like to have! n
