Art Bahrain Across Borders 2018

Gravity village is hosting this year's suq al Basta from february to the end of march during the weekends it welcomes visitors from all age groups. Suq al Basta contributes to supporting the productive families and the new youth projects and encouraging them to enter the market and practice trade as a kind of community partnership that contributes to creating a healthy society aware of the important opportunities available to increase income and improve living standards. This year, the market will witness line-up of kid’s activities, local bands, musicians and artists throughout the duration of the festival.

Majid Al Maskati, originally from Bahrain. teamed up with Jordan Ullman in Canada creating Majid Jordan dou. The Canadian dou dropped their self-titled debut album in early 2016 to critical and commercial success, cracking the Top 10 on the R&B charts before kicking off their first-ever tour. Majid Jordan's minimal yet soulful sound stands on its own, drawing listeners in with catchy and slick beats. During their first round on the road the pair impressed fans with serious swagger and slayed stages big and small with the one-two punch of Majid Al Maskati's sensual croon and Jordan Ullman's cuttingedge production skills. Bahrain Confidential shares a conversation with Shaikha Noor Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Al Khalifa, the minds behind Noon By Noor.

26 Bahrain Confidential March 2018

Fashion

T

his season, Designers Shaikha Noor Rashid Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Mohammed al Khalifa give a fresh twist to an elegantly modern woman’s wardrobe.

What sparked your interest in fashion? Noor: I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to become a fashion designer. It was only natural, as I grew up in an artistic household. My father

is a renowned artist. So art, design, and fashion have always been an integral and inevitable part of me. Haya: I have always had a strong interest in fashion and the arts, but my decision to pursue fashion design as a career came later in life, after extensive travels around the world, where I gained inspiration from enriching and meaningful encounters with various cultures.

How has your cultural root influenced your collections and designs? Our Bahraini roots continue to inspire our collections in multifaceted ways, ranging from the palpable to the subtler tributes. These designs take the form of modern expression to achieve timeless pieces. Since our brand bridges East and West, our Bahraini roots make up half the equation.

Tell us more about the latest

collection, where did you draw the inspiration for this? Our Spring Summer 2018 collection drew inspiration from our home country Bahrain, which is portrayed through the color palette of red and white along with several silhouettes and silk fabrics that present a modern take on Bahrain’s traditional silhouettes.

Bahrain Confidential March 2018 27

Fashion What do you think makes Noon by Noor a distinctive successful brand in today’s overly crowded fashion world? Noon By Noor offers a qualitative edge that uniquely transcends boundaries of space (East & West) and time (day & evening). Although our brand identity is often times defined as effortlessly chic, it is also versatile and has a unique appeal for today’s woman. Our distinction stems from our constant development within this creative industry and our relentless commitment to outdo ourselves season after season, while maintaining the high standards of the label and staying true to our brand identity.

The collection looks incredible! Do you have a favourite piece? Noor: One of my favorite looks from this collection is our red Natalia knit, and red Clara pants. It’s the perfect embodiment of nonchalant chic. The boldness of the color juxtaposes the oversized masculine shaped knit and the fluid feminine pants, which mirrors a vital recurring theme in our designs. Haya: The Harris jumpsuit is my favorite piece from this collection. It’s elegant, effortless, very chic and embodies the core values of our brand.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Noor: There’s no place like home, so I’d have to say Riffa. The moment I enter the city; I feel like the roads are paved with the most beautiful of memories. Haya: Living on and an island where the beach is a short drive away is probably my favorite part of Bahrain. Nothing beats the view of a tranquil blue sea stretched for miles and miles, especially after a challenging work week. n www.noonbynoor.com @noonbynoor

Going Beyond Interview with Soufiane El Allam, Executive Assistant ManagerSales and Marketing of The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.

T

he Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain has always been considered as the leading five-star hotel in the Kingdom, but there is now an increasing competition from other luxury brands in the market. With that in mind, how do you plan to maintain your status?

Soufiane says that they’re well aware of the new hotels opening up as well as the competition on the island. One thing that The Ritz-Carlton has that others don’t is that they’ve built a very loyal customer base because of the time they’ve been in Bahrain. Additionally, their customer surveys have the highest engagement.

36 Bahrain Confidential March 2018

Tell us something about the service philosophy in The RitzCarlton that separates it from the other luxury brands.

There’s a certain level of hospitality which they believe they have stronger than any other hotel and they will do anything to maintain that.

"We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen." This motto exemplifies the anticipatory service provided by all staff members. It has been a golden rule for The Ritz-Carlton that all the staff are well trained to be ladies and gentlemen. It starts with three essential steps of service: giving a warm and sincere greeting; using the guest’s name and anticipating his needs; and providing a fond farewell.

Can you provide any real life and local examples of the service philosophy?

Additionally, The Ritz-Carlton culture is built on a framework of high standards.

The Ritz-Carlton empowers its staff to ensure that customers have a great experience. They go beyond that to create an incredible stay – one of these things is to solve problems, sometimes even before they materialize. One of the many remarkable things worth noting down is that all employees are empowered to make sound decisions when faced with a guest problem. Many people misunderstand this as empowering

Feature employees to compensate a customer when the hotel makes a mistake. Contrary to this belief, this tool of empowerment can be used to enhance the experience of any guest and create indelible marks in their hearts and minds. Soufiane shares a story about a businessman from the UK who lost a baggage through his airline. This businessman had a very important meeting, so the hotel arranged a tailormade suit which made him perfect for the meeting.

There was another situation where a child left his toy at the hotel. When Chris Hurn's family came back from their holiday at The Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island Florida, they unfortunately returned without Joshie the Giraffe, his son's 'best friend'. Chris explained to his crying child that Joshie was enjoying The Ritz-Carlton so much he’s staying for an extra few days. Chris told the hotel about Joshie's 'extra holiday' and wondered if they would mind taking a picture of Joshie on a chair by the pool to prove it. A couple days later, a package arrived and in it was Joshie, along with some Ritz-Carlton-

branded 'goodies'. Also included in the package was a binder that meticulously documented Joshie's extended stay at the hotel. Soufiane continues with a story about the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs. When Jobs was getting ready to open the first Apple store, he and Ron Johnson asked around the Apple headquarters in California: "What's the best customer experience you've ever had yourself, as a customer?". The response they heard most was that the best customer experience took place at a Ritz-

Carlton resort. Therefore, Jobs studied the service philosophy of the Ritz-Carlton so that he could give Apple a greater customer service.

On living in Bahrain… Soufiane shares how much he loves Bahrain. He originally came to the island for only a year but he is currently living in Bahrain for five years. What makes Bahrain so special for him are the people and the lifestyle. Just recently (at the time of writing), there was a team of journalists who has been in Dubai and was visiting

Bahrain. According to Soufiane, the team shared that upon comparing the two regions, they preferred Bahrain – although Dubai was bigger and glitzier, Bahrain had a sense of authenticity about it.

What has been the biggest challenges and successes of the past year? They’re working very hard on bringing in more midweek guests – which is a challenge, says Soufiane. Personally, he sees his job is to very much put the hotel on the map and they’ve been very successful on the STR report as well as bringing in international conferences. Soufiane adds that their plans include bringing new signature events and guest experiences. n For more information: Tel. +973 1758 0000

Outstanding recreational facilities: one of the key elements of The Flagship’s success…

The brilliantly appointed kids’ play area provides a fun and safe environment for children to exercise and play, unimpeded by space restrictions. It is also great to see a kids’ play area that is well-used, with children from different families regularly meeting and interacting. The Flagship’s stand-out facility, though, has to be the sizeable temperature controlled pool. Being fixed at 29 degrees (approx.), it offers tenants an all-year-round swimming facility, perfectly designed for families and more serious swimmers alike. he residential sector in Bahrain has moved-on from the days of seasonal recreational facilities. Certainly our market research shows that tenants are no longer prepared to put up with cold swimming pools in the winter and pools that simulate a hot bath during the summer months.

The signing is subject to approval by antitrust authorities. With this move, the world’s leading provider of premium mobility is offering customers efficient, sustainable mobility solutions from a single source.

The rapidly growing field of mobility services is one of the cornerstones of the BMW Group’s corporate strategy NUMBER ONE > NEXT, as evidenced by the BMW Group expanding its offering in the areas of on-demand mobility (DriveNow and ReachNow), parking (#ParkNow) and charging (#ChargeNow) in a sustainable way. The acquisition of the Sixt shares is therefore the next logical step in this strategy, following the acquisition of Parkmobile LLC in early January of this

Ask HV Holistic Health… Every time I try a new diet and lose weight, I put the weight back on and usually more. Can you explain why this is happening, and how I can keep the weight off?

Andrea Answers:

target. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine, and teach yourself how to eat intuitively.

I want to congratulate you on successfully losing weight. That in itself is an achievement. It’s extremely common for people to yo-yo, and to understand why this happens, we need to look at the possible causes.

Goals

State of mind Ask yourself why you gained weight in the first place. When we overeat to deal with: emotional stress, boredom, loneliness, fear of rejection, fear of being loved or happiness, for example, we’re not only satisfying our physical hunger but, our emotional one too. No matter how many kilos or inches you lose, suppressing emotional trauma never works in the long run. If this resonates with you, find a support network, seek advice from a professional, and focus as much of your energy on your mental health as your physical weight loss.

Perceived self-image I can absolutely promise you that there is no ‘magic weight’ when it comes to happiness. Being less than 20% body fat doesn’t solve life’s problems, and losing

3kg is unlikely to dramatically change your life. Learning to be appreciative of your health above your weight, is one step in the right direction.

Nutrition If you lost weight by dramatically reducing your calories, excess weight will return when you start to eat normally again. Consider what method of weight-loss is sustainable from the outset, and you can avoid this problem when you reach your

Many people are happy with their ‘less than perfect’ bodies, whereas others stress over what could be considered ‘the perfect physique’, so it would seem that setting realistic targets plays a valuable role in feeling satisfied. It’s a mistake to nostalgically compare our current physiques to the 18-year-old versions of ourselves. As the body matures, hormone levels change, you have to work harder to keep your metabolic rate up, and other lifestyle factors make it difficult, (but not impossible), to shift unwanted kilos. Importantly, learn to love yourself now, rather than loving the idea of what you could be.n Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Andrea Lister Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training Tel: +973 1777 5544

New York Gulf Insider’s Travel & Lifestyle editor Christine Warren-White experiences a fashion frenzy made in Manhattan…

N

ew York—the epicenter of cutting edge cool, cuisine, creativity and of course fashion. A melting pot of cultures, New York’s fast-paced, frenetic energy always makes me feel alive from the moment I step off the plane. Landing at Newark airport to that famous NYC skyline, my heart beats that little bit faster as I’m whisked off to one of New York’s most desirable and luxury addresses—The Surrey Hotel. I feel like SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw, as staying at The Surrey is like having my own private residence in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper Eastside. Only, this has a fabulous roof terrace overlooking Central Park; stylish rooms with Diptyque amenities, a serene spa and Daniel Boulud’s eponymous, one Michelin starred Café Boulud.

I love fashion however I love my bank balance more, so whenever I’m in New York I head for Century 21. The mecca of designer discounts, their flagship store is in the Financial District and lucky for you, you won’t need a Wall Street wallet to feed your fashion habit. With 220,000 square feet, over seven floors you can literally shop till you drop. And I did! Everything from designer jeans—think Armani, Diesel,

Dolce & Gabanna; delectable dresses from Kate Spade, Max Studio and Scotch & Soda (think I might need one of those later!) and the shoes, oh my the shoes. All I can say is it’s a good job they sell designer luggage, as I needed another suitcase for my unabashed buying. Well with up to 65% off I had more to spend! Luckily, or not if you’re my bank manager (sorry Kevin), you can shop Century 21 from Bahrain as they ship internationally. Genius! I now fear there maybe a few unhappy Kevin’s as being able to shop in Manhattan from Manama might catch on!

Bar Pleiades Armed with new bags, shoes, jeans and dresses, artfully arranged in my new

suitcase, I head back to celebrate, and commiserate on behalf of Kevin, with cocktails at the Coco Chanel inspired Bar Pleiades at my townhouse, AKA The Surrey. I marvel how the bar, framed by a black lacquered wood box with white lacquer inlay, is reminiscent of my newly purchased Chanel compact. My L-shaped banquette, surrounded by beige quilting a la Chanel handbag style, induces a sartorial smile as I check out the cocktail list. And what a list! All the classics are inspired by a bygone era with inventive modern twists can be enjoyed in the intimate setting or experienced in your Salon or Suite. One of the incredible in-house mixologists will arrive with the accoutrements to mix and pour your preferred, perfect concoction. Having perused the list, my eyes settle on, well it could only be one thing couldn’t it? I know what you’re thinking and it’s not a Carrie Bradshaw Cosmopolitan; it is, of course, that much needed Manhattan. Cheers! n

The Eternal Relics of

Egyptian Glory Dhanyasree M. shares her musings and mishaps during her travels to Egypt.

T

he eternal Pyramids of Giza, the relics of Egypt’s past glory, always ruled over a vast area away from the bustle of the cities, in my imagination. That’s why, I could hardly believe that we reached at the Pyramids grounds right in the middle of bustling Cairo.

The Great Pyramids of Giza stood in all its glory in front of us; these pyramids were

of King Khufu (tallest one), his son King Khafre and King Menkaure. Our guide mentioned that though the smallest, King Menkaure’s Pyramid, attained more respect and riches than his ancestors. Mythology, ancient engineering mastery and the splendours of the ancient Egypt are illustrated for the generations to come at the Pyramids. The Pharaohs believed in life after death. Thus, they erected huge tombs and amassed it with wealth that would sustain them in the next world. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built circa 2550 B.C, by the great Pharaoh Khufu houses two chambers dedicated to the King and his beloved Queen. Originally, King Khufu’s chamber was designed to be at a lower position. The proud

I thankfully sat at the edge of the big stone tub without realizing that King Menkaure’s mummy was laid to rest at that very spot. churning and I was exhausted by living my worst phobia. Our final destination was at the Sphinx, the largest limestone monolith statue in the world. Included in the necropolis of Pharaoh Khafre, the Sphinx has the lion’s body and Pharaoh’s face. Long been worshiped as the guiding God, Philosopher, protector and creator of great ancient Egypt, Sphinx went under sleep beneath the sand layers till 1400 BC. The young King Thutmose IV had a dream

Standing in front of the tallest man made structure over the world that towers over the plateau, we wondered over the mysterious construction. The construction of the Pyramids were from top to bottom than from bottom to the top. It must have taken almost twenty years to construct the Pyramid that would have begun during the lifetime of Khufu. Each day they had to cast approximately 800 tonnes of stones that weighed 2.5 to 15 tons. There are approximately 2.3 million stone blocks on the Pyramid. The construction and how the stones were quarried to the spot through the Nile in the Stone Age, still remains a mystery. Many people believe that the Gods aided the construction whereas, scientists believe in some natural eruptions. As many questions remain unanswered, the Pyramids still remain as the eternal relics of ancient glory.

The Pyramid of Menkaure The Pyramid of Menkaure, is the only pyramid that allowed visitors into its chambers. Though excited to view the chambers, I was also nervous to go in due to my claustrophobia. Steep and narrow steps lead downwards and the stone roofs were cast so low to the steps. I had to bend low as possible to reach the narrow passage, which were covered on both sides by huge stones. The passage ended at another staircase to go up to the chamber. The steps ended at a wider passage. I got scared being in the labyrinth of Minotaur and wanted to run back to the entrance. At the same time, I didn’t turn back and ran towards the end of the passage to find an open space. The narrow passage ended at the King Menkaure’s burial chamber. The guide, who was there to assist, exclaimed,

For 5,000 years, this monument must have seen all the Suns that man can remember and the history of Egypt in its best glow. Through the ages, it has received many names through the people who came in adoration. Generations bowed before it, and will be there for years to come. As I stood transfixed, I noticed that something was missing on the Sphinx the nose! There are many tales regarding the destruction of Sphinx’ nose including Alexander the great knocking off the Sphinx’ nose. Our guide concluded, "Alexander the Great’s Pyramid is not yet discovered. There are umpteen such Pyramids yet not discovered. It is not in vain that the world call our land, a land of mysteries and wonders!" n

Noor Shirazie

Striking Sketches

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of artist, Noor Shirazie.

Art has always been a language, a form of expression that holds the kind of impact words cannot.

58 Bahrain Confidential March 2018

D

id you study art formally? Tell us about your education and training.

I pursued art under Bahrain School's International Baccalaureate program. The program consisted of a two-year art class that taught me the importance of committing to a particular drawing style and giving it a thorough chance. During my college years, I turned to sketching as a way to relieve stress but chose not to pursue it as a career.

What do you remember as your first work of art? My first sketches were made as a toddler - that's where it started! All it takes to explore an idea is a pen and paper, and that's exactly what I'd do.

Art What does art mean to you? Art has always been a language, a form of expression that holds the kind of impact words cannot. It's catharsis after long days. It's an opportunity to reach out and connect with others who have experienced similar hardships and triumphs. It's the catalyst to powerful dialogues between people and communities. Most importantly, it's a way to celebrate how two people can look at a piece with completely different perspectives and engage in meaningful conversation about them, exposing each other to a fresh approach that each person wouldn't have typically been exposed to on their own.

Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? I begin with a general outline to gauge proportion and

perspective. For example, if I'm working on a portrait, I want the distance between the subject's eyes not to be too close or too far apart. Once the general outline is complete, I work with layers on my digital art software to add shading, additional lines, a background, and a bit of glitter so the work pops. The tricky thing about art is that there are always new things to add to a piece, however it becomes overkill after a certain point. It's not always easy to determine when to stop adding detail, but I deem a piece finished after adding the glitter - that's the final touch!

Which part of Bahrain is your favorite and why? The Seef and City Centre area stand out in my mind, mainly because I remember weekends walking around the malls with my parents or friends. I wasn't a fan of the malls because of what was in them. It was due more to sentimentality and the memories created with my friends in those areas, especially when I remember battling the crowds on a Friday night to get to a movie! I think of Seef and City Centre and automatically get nostalgic because of the sheer familiarity those areas contain. n Aside from being an artist, Noor Shirazie is the author of “Into the Wildfire series. The Australian-Pakistani-Iranian author studied at Bahrain School and calls the island her second home. @noorsketches

Fashion

Gulf

Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.

T

hey say that fashion goes in circles. Wiser ones say that fashion trends turn around in a spiral. If that is true, I wonder were do we find ourselves at the moment? All the current trends seem to be a bit of mish mash of everything offering the fashion-follower no clear directive. In the bygone days (*sigh*) the rules of dressing were firmly defined, not only in terms of the dress code, but the style tendencies as well. If you were not sporting Flappers tassels in 20’s, swirling in a full New Look skirt in 50’s, not bracing a bum-bearing mini of 60’s or refused to trot in anklebreaking platforms of 70’s, you were labelled an unfashionable frump. There were no grey areas, either you were in or out. Nowadays, one could pile on all these in one outfit and no one would bat an eyelid, as confusingly fashion editors present us with still new fashion challenges each month, such as head-to-toe florals (pattern best left to sofas and curtains), fluorescent yellow (ouch) or wide stripes (who in their right mind wants to look like they wondered out of 40’s prison). And the matters are further aggravated by the rapidly dwindling respect for the dresscode or even a simple grooming. Just for instance, last weekend we dined with friends at the one of most popular hotel eateries in Bahrain. Once making a booking they always stress that their dress-code is ‘smart casual’, however as in

60 Bahrain Confidential March 2018

modern world lines between descriptions of various dress codes are so blurry, no one has a foggiest idea of what that means exactly. I, personally, am not a great fan of this ‘smart-casual’ thingamajig. First of all, no one ever gets it right and turns either too dressed up or too dressed dawn, thus everyone ends up feeling

I can’t help but wander, which crooked end of that fashion spiral we find ourselves at the moment.

Some ladies sported a ‘working look’ (and I am not talking about an office attire). Some looked like they were interrupted in the midst of their dressing process, lost the thread of thought and just left like that. In this muck-up of outfits, national dress looked rather neat and smart in comparison. I can’t help but wander, which crooked end of that fashion spiral we find ourselves at the moment. Or is it just a lack of basic skills of grooming and decline of respect for one’s appearance (*deep sigh*). n

self-conscious and uncomfortable. (Since we are at that, it must be mentioned, that the emphasis should be on ‘smart’, not ‘casual’). Where was I? Oh, yes, that happening watering hole and its clientele. Looking around myself what did I see? Pretty much everything. Some were dressed as they just popped in after doing grocery shopping. Some glammed up to nines as if on the way to the night club (fair enough).

Lucky Clucks is a fast-casual and wallet-friendly restaurant. This restaurant concept is a blend of fast food with casual dining; fast casual offers the ease and convenience of fast food but with a more inviting sit-down atmosphere. In contrast to fast food chains, Lucky Clucks features a more upscale and diverse menu selection while

offering freshly-prepared and high quality meals delivered instantly. Customers order off a menu selection, then sit down and enjoy their meal in a leisurely fashion. Upon entering the restaurant, we immediately felt the international aesthetic of the place. Decked in vibrant colours, the place is very chic while the red and black interior also adds up to its cool ambiance. Let’s get down to what we really came

Going Out We also didn’t miss the Chicken & Rice which is made up of crispy chicken tenders, biryani rice, crispy onions topped with homemade garlic mayo and chipotle sauce. Unlike other restaurants wherein the chicken breading often overwhelms the actual meat, each bite into Lucky Clucks’ chicken is soft, flavourful and succulent. It had a zesty flavour and a bit of crunch on the skin that goes extremely well with the rice. We would have to admit that it is love at first bite and we couldn’t really move on until now. True enough, the freshness of the ingredients radiates through each mouthful. Lucky Clucks never freezes meat as it makes for lackluster food. Nothing bottled, everything fresh The pièce de résistance, however, is the Chicken Fries! The gooey cheese, classic French fries, crispy chicken bites, beef bacon and a combination of sauces are bursting with flavour. The side dish gives the usual fries a fresh makeover without overpowering the taste buds. For the lovers of all things spicy, the Fire Bird Sandwich, Chili Cheese Slider and Chili Cheese Fries are perfect for you.

here for: the food. Lucky Clucks has a superior menu line-up; the mouthwatering salads, the chicken bites, and tenders complemented with 14 homemade sauces, sandwiches, the creative sides with surprising flavor combinations. For starters, we sampled the Roasted Beetroot salad which is composed of fresh mixed greens, beetroot, sliced almonds, topped with feta cheese and eggplant chips tossed with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. One thing we’ve noticed is the generous portions of each dish especially the salad, which can be shared by two or more people (and it’s only BD1.5!). Moving on to the sandwiches – the mere looks of every single one will definitely get your appetite running. A resounding crunch welcomes us upon the first bite of the Lucky Cluck sandwich. The chicken is moist and tender, a far cry from the sandwiches we’ve known of. The

Without a doubt, this alone is enough to give Lucky Clucks a try. On the other hand, the sliders are bigger than we thought as they appear like a regular burger.

Apart from the chicken dishes, Lucky Clucks also takes pride in its gourmet sauces that have been crafted to complement whatever you order. We really love the sauces! They elevate the depth of flavour and added different experiences when combined with the dishes. You can choose from 14 different flavours: Clucky BBQ, Smokey BBQ, Spicy BBQ, Buffalo, Lucky Sauce, Super Spicy, Sweet Onion, Ranch, Southwest Chipotle, Garlic Aioli, Black Pepper Mayo, Masala Mayo, Sweet Chili and Honey Mustard. A Night to

Remember I

’ll be honest – Bahrain has made me lazy… driving any longer than 2 minutes to get to a meeting or grab a bite to eat feels like a real mission. Perhaps that’s a slight exaggeration, but I think we can all agree that travelling 10 minutes or more seems like a bit of a trek on this Island. So, driving from Amwaj to the Royal Golf Club on a Thursday night seemed a distance to go but let me tell you that it was TOTALLY worth it. Recently, we were delighted to receive an invite to review the Royal Golf Club’s Thursday Night Brunch. I know what you’re thinking – brunch? Breakfastlunch… at night? Well it works. The Royal Golf Club have recently started this concept and it happens every Thursday night from 7pm until 11pm in

from which you can order whatever you like and as much as you like – an absolute foodie’s dream that offers the luxury of having each dish prepared as per your request. The menu is vast and spans wide, catering for all taste buds. Options on the menu include cold selection, hot selection and house favourite. In the cold selection, diners can choose from the mezzeh buffet as well as other dishes including: pan fried foie gras, toasted brioche, fig chutney, seared scallops, peking duck wraps, baked oysters, a selection of sushi, and a lot more. In another note, you can enjoy tasty dishes like beef tenderloin, lamb shank and pan fried sea bass from the hot selection. By far what I enjoyed most was the Fish & Chips, which by the way I didn’t order, a friend did, but the beauty of this brunching concept and the way it’s presented means sharing dishes works well. Which takes me onto the next thing – the presentation. All is served in fine style and small dishes with delicious sauces. They also offer a ‘cocktail of the week’ which was really refreshing and presented beautifully – which gets me excited to visit next time to see what new cocktail they’ll be crafting?! Presentation is a major factor

Via Brasil is a Brazilian style restaurant based on the Churrasco cooking style. The word 'Churrasco' means 'barbeque'.

The restaurant offered the majestic night view of the island. Stars glittered above on a clear sky and the lights glowed below. We enjoyed the splendid view overlooking the Al Fateh Grand Mosque as we relaxed and enjoyed our drinks. Ms. Lynda, the friendly Passadore (meat waiter) explained the Churrascaria dining experience in detail.

The Passadores will serve the meat cuts straight from the skewer at your table. During the course, there will be a green meat sign on your table. Once you are satisfied with the fire roasted meat cuts, turn the meat sign to the red side until you are ready for more offerings. Soon, the meat cuts arrived at the table sliced and served by the Passadores. There was no pause as varieties of meat followed in a queue and the meat sign remained green. The Chef can never go wrong! Whoever had the Beef Tenderloin certified that it was the best that they had ever tasted and the pieces almost melted in their mouths. One by one the meat sign turned to red at the table after many serves. The pineapple slices marinated with cinnamon culminated our Churrascaria dining experience on a sweet note. We ended the meal with the signature desserts from the chef. "The Churrasco style charcoal will arrive in the next month. You are welcome again for the more authentic experience." La Vinoteca Barcelona takes Bahrain Confidential on a festive culinary adventure.

¡Que Delicioso!

T

ucked in the stylish district of Adliya, La Vinoteca Barcelona promises the warmth and vibrancy of Spanish cuisine in an entirely rejuvenated setting. The restaurant exudes an unpretentious charm that invites you long before you walk in. Tasteful interiors, resembling the staves of a wooden barrel, greeted us upon entering with anticipation. Since it was a beautiful day outside, we opted for the outdoor seating. We flicked through the new menu, while admiring the elegance of the garden. We were spoilt for choices with the flexible range of authentic Spanish dishes, so we decided to ask Chef Joan Gomez for assistance. Chef Joan recommended to start with ensalada, as well as some cold and hot tapas. Chef Joan shared that they only use fresh ingredients sourced with passion, both from the local market, as well as from Europe. This was reinforced through the quality and freshness of each bite of crisp Apple and Avocado Salad, as well as the Ceviche de Gamba. We were also amazed by the tenderness of the Octopus Terrine, which was further enhanced by

the smokiness of paprika - truly fresh and appetising. Moving on to the main, the Milk-fed Lamb Al Barro stood out from the many fantastic options. Slow baked for 12 hours in a clay pot, the lamb was full of complex flavours and enriched by its perfect seasoning, rosemary gravy, cumin spiced carrots and Castilian potatoes. The joy we experienced while digging into the Arròs Negre was unparalleled. We enjoyed the balanced taste of the black paella mixed with prawns, cuttlefish, calamari ink and aioli sauce. For dessert, we were immediately drawn to the Pa Amb Xocolata I Oli d’Oliva, with its toasted bread and dark chocolate ganache with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt flakes. If you fancy another delicious option, we equally enjoyed the Chocolate Buñuelos, served with cinnamon ice
