People Who Are Making A Difference This column would be dedicated to people in Bahrain who are contributing to this society and putting great efforts into helping others and making Bahrain a better place. Eman is a 28-year-old Bahraini, who started her journey of rescuing animals back in 2015 unintentionally when one of her friends convinced her to look after four kittens found in the trash. She had no previous experience with animals back then, but felt it is the right thing to do. The story didn’t end with Eman adopting these kittens, it was only the start of something great! Eman now is well known for her amazing effort with a team of volunteers who works closely with her, under Bahrain Rescues' nonprofit organization since 2016. On average, Eman and her team rescue two animals per weeks with a focus on dogs and cats but have rescued other species like birds, hamsters, and others. Since most rescued animals are injured, the next step is to get them the medical care needed. Once they fully recover, which can take long periods in some cases, they spay and neuter the animals to put them up for adoption. Bahrain Rescues have joined few pop-up markets seeking forever homes for animals who are ready to get adopted. Bahrain rescues have their own small shelter now; it is home to 40 rescued cats, dogs and 4 hamsters. The shelter is looked after only by Eman and her team with no external help or permanent workers. This is due to limited resources as donations are used to cover rent, electricity, and water. The medical care provided is also donation based, donors give their contributions to vet clinics directly without the involvement of Bahrain Rescues. The urgent cases of rescued animals can be found on @bahrain_rescues Instagram account. Eman aims to build a rescue center and hold events at schools to share her message with kids. Bahrain Rescues' nonprofit organization was established based on the effort, love, and passion of Eman and her team alongside with the generous donations of those who care. n

Influencers

How many life-hours are you wasting on Social Media? Several tech executives have recently spoken up over their concerns about social media and the effect it is having on our society. Chamath Palihapitiya, a former Facebook executive, said in December 2017 that he has “tremendous guilt” about the company he helped make. “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works,” according to an article in the Washington Post. I tend to agree. The Center for Humane Technology says that social media has “trained us to replace our self-worth with likes, encourages comparison with others, and creates the constant illusion of missing out.” As someone who has spent the last 15 years as a heavy technology user, sharing my expat life and travels with family to becoming a professional blogger, I’m no stranger to the positives of the World Wide Web. Despite this, I made a decision in 2016 to take a break from using my social media accounts to focus on my real life. I deactivated my Facebook profile and only kept Messenger for keeping in touch with family and friends. By doing this, I was able to read up to two to three books a week and kickstart my 20kg weight loss. Did I return to social media? Yes, I did, but I was able to look at it for the tool it is, with greater awareness, self-control and mindfulness. In parting I’d leave you with this from blogger, Alexandra Franzen. “At the end of my life, will I say to myself: ‘My God, I am so grateful that I tweeted 151,200 times (2,016 tweets per year times seventy-five years starting around age twenty-five) throughout my life? Time well spent! How wonderful! Alex, is this really how you want to be spending your life-minutes? Isn’t there something else that might be a more meaningful use of your time? Wouldn’t you rather be walking outside, talking to your mom, writing a novel, working out, mailing a letter, volunteering, you know, all of those things that you ‘never have enough time’ to do?’” n

A classic one-piece swimsuit: The one-piece swimsuit is here to stay. It’s popularity over the last few years has sky rocketed. We have seen many ditching bikinis for the comfort, elegance and street cred a stylish swimsuit can bring. We love versatile swimsuits that can be pared with a pair of shorts or over a skirt in the evening.

The timeless kaftan: Kaftans add a touch of effortless boho glamour to any beach look and can be worn from your poolside lunch to the beach with ease. We love the sleek styles from Pondicherie, who focus on quality breathable fabrics. Pair with big sunglasses and a floppy sun hat for some serious style points.

It is also the start of the season where it’s worth focusing on your wardrobe essentials early on, selecting them carefully and enjoying them throughout the year and hopefully for seasons to come.

We’ve listed the top 5 Spring/Summer essentials you will want to be stocking up on from now:

A brunch dress: A good brunch dress is both stylish and pretty, can stay crumple free all day and lets you go from brunch to after party with ease. We love the embellished details of Juliet Dunne’s boho dresses, which will sure to make a few heads turn.

4 A beach cover-up: A bright dress that is easy to throw over your swimwear is an essential for any day by the pool. Check out California brand 9 Seed for their free flowing, beautifully cut organic cotton dresses.

5

Cap-sleeved swimwear:

A stark contrast to bandeau bikinis, cap sleeves are coming back into style. Adding a little extra hold and comfort, we love these styles for their unique look and flattering shape. Check out www.maisonmaillot.com for all the above , located in Bahrain they offer same day delivery.

ahrain is served by many truly excellent restaurants. Many restaurants are special, but some are extra special. For the first time, we can properly honour these establishments, and the people behind them, as judged by those in the best position to know. We asked the General Managers, executive chefs, senior food, beverage and other executives of Bahrain’s 5 Star hotels to nominate and vote for the restaurants they considered best on the island. The only stipulation was that a judge could not vote for any outlet connected to their own property or brand. The voting process was transparent and every judge could see the restaurants voted for by every other judge. n a city packed with decadent havens, the sheer volume of spas can be overwhelming, so we are sharing how this particular one stands out from the rest. Located at Wyndham Grand Manama, the new Spa Suite offers remarkable tranquility and privacy for a soothing and unique experience.

Upon entering the spa, we couldn’t help but admire the sprawling space complemented by the stunning views of the city. After a quick tour, we noticed how different it is from the treatment rooms we’ve been accustomed to. With sweeping views of the Manama skyline, this gem offers exceptional massages, facials and body treatments. The lovely spa manager, Eden, shares that the Spa Suite also boasts the first Himalayan salt wall in Bahrain. Aside from adding aesthetic value to the place, it boosts the guests’ health. Gently heated, the Himalayan salt serves as a natural ionizer; when heated, the salt crystals attract moisture on the salt block surface, and the negative ions are emitted as that moisture evaporates. The negatively charged ions from the heated Himalayan salt serve to purify the circulating air.

Weight Loss and What We Need to Know About This In my 25 years of experience, this is one of the biggest problems in our century! Being overweight can give you nothing but discomfort as well as some diseases. It can also make your self confidence low and you value yourself less. Here are some tips:

Change your habits I know that it sounds easy to say or to write down but when it comes to the practical side, things look a bit different. The truth is that you can’t change all your habits in a day or a week. It’s a lifestyle and those changes should happen step by step. Give your body and mind the time to adapt to the new changes.

Sort the right food for you In most cases, you’re going to need a nutritionist or fitness expert trainer. He can provide you with a tailored diet plan.

Be active Engage in additional physical activity excluding going to the work, walking in the mall or shopping. You need an activity that raises your heart rate because only then your body will go into the FAT BURNING process! Try swimming, cycling, brisk walking, jogging or any other cardio workout.

Believe in yourself The faster you program your mind, the faster you start to execute the plan and move FORWARD! No one will do it for you because you are the only one that can and prove to yourself that YOU CAN CHANGE! Take the first step and never look back. I really do not believe in excuses; if there is a will there is always a way.

Commit and be consistent This is the hardest of all but you must stay committed. You can do this. I REALLY BELIEVE IN YOU! The only thing is HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? n

Mini in a BIG City Bahrain Confidential test drives the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman.

T

he second generation of the MINI Countryman is the biggest and most versatile model in the entire range of the traditionsteeped British brand. Just recently, we had the chance to put it up to the test in Dubai!

While most small crossovers aren’t known for being especially powerful, there are exceptions to the rule. One of those exceptions is the MINI John Cooper Works Countryman. With an output of 170 kW/231 hp, it is the most powerful engine ever to be fitted in a MINI. The MINI combines a standard all-wheel drive system ALL4 and a robust vehicle concept. It ensures that the latest addition to the family of John Cooper Works takes the MINI experience to a whole new level – in terms of both race track feeling on the road and extreme driving fun over unsurfaced terrain. Aside from this, it is nippy and stylish, definitely the perfect car for a city like Dubai! In addition to state-of-the-art technology, the distinctive character of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman is derived from the brand’s longstanding and successful motor racing tradition. It was 55 years ago that the classic Mini clinched its first victory – when the Mini Cooper won the British Touring Car Championship. Since then the name of legendary sports car designer John Cooper has stood for the brand’s racing success and the extreme driving fun it offers on the road. The exterior design of the new MINI John Cooper Works Countryman expresses the model’s distinctive combination of extreme athleticism and exceptional versatility. It is undoubtedly one of the prettiest looking cars in the line. Inside, versatility can be experienced on five fully edged seats and in a characteristic sports car atmosphere. In addition to the sports seats with integrated headrests, features such as the sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons, gear or selector lever and the roof liner in anthracite all contribute to the car’s intense feeling of racing air. The driver assistance systems developed for the current model generation enhance comfort and safety in the car, too! All in all, it was very fun to drive. n

T

ell us about your story, how did Art Select come about? What is your vision?

Initiated in 2005 as a prototype, Art Select was founded through our passion for contemporary and modern art. What started as a private passion turned into Bahrain’s foremost art organization. In 2008, Art Select has grown to be an association that creates, conceives and manages the ‘business of art’; a key point that most people shy away from. Being commercial does not always mean that the intent is for the profiteer – every focus need a commercial variable, otherwise the craft will either die off or outlive its utility. We believe that art is not only about an artist creating his work, only to be confined within the four walls of his studio. Aside from creating for the sake of creation, it is about the inspiration,

We believe that art is not only about an artist creating his work, only to be confined within the four walls of his studio.

motivation and reward that each artist will be able to receive through the communication and appreciation of his expertise. Sometimes we forget that like all of us, artists have their own roles and responsibilities too and the making art is his means so we must support it. Today, Art Select is an art advisory crafting artist platforms, art events and investor art portfolios.

Share us some of Art Select’s proudest achievements. Over the past 12 years, Art Select has done over 60 art shows across Bahrain, Dubai, London and Oman. Those are the building blocks of our flagship project ‘Art Bahrain Across Borders (ArtBAB). Bahrain Across Borders aims to attract leading international

galleries to the Kingdom. It focuses on powering the expansion of the art market while easing the development of local Bahraini artists. We have invested everything in this venture when we conceived its prototype back in 2015. After its first edition, we took a year and added a vertical of artists during ArtBAB’s launch in 2016. Today, over 70 Bahraini artists have benefitted from the program since its launch. The International artists program has traveled to various countries like United Kingdoms, Russia, India, France and Singapore. The sales of the Bahraini artists have consistently shown a 50 percent increase in volume annually. This endeavor would not have seen the light of day if it was not for the support of our Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women. The magnitude of her umbrella of support and guidance backed

Bahrain Confidential March 2019 57

Feature Tasneem has grown with ArtBAB over the last four years as an integral part of the fair. She has assisted and involved herself in every stage and I feel (and know) that today, she is ready to take it forward herself. It is overwhelming to see this transition and I am looking forward to what the the future brings.

How has the Bahrain art scene grown since ArtBAB was established? Bahrain always had a unique art scene that existed within its premises. The Bahrain Arts Society is one of the oldest institutions with unmatched talent with unmatched talent that I can only be in awe of and not comment on. In fact, one of my first shows was held at the Arts Society and I remember Shaikh Rashid Al Khalifa who is a pioneer of the fraternity, stopped by to support the event despite him travelling. H.E. Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al-Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities, on the other hand, paid a visit to our art lounge in Riffa Views before we opened doors to show her support. All of this encouragement is what motivated me to push my boundaries and “create” what I felt was missing ‘the business of art’. What can I say I was lucky this need was identified, acknowledged, advised and guided by none other than, Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chairman of Tamkeen, whose astute vision escalated mine from a thought to a national platform. I still remember a conversation four years back where he distinctly said “our artists have the talent we must create the best platforms for them, equally” that was set in stone and there was no looking back.

What have you planned for ArtBAB 2019?

Today, over 70 Bahraini artists have benefitted from the program since its launch.

Our theme this year is ‘Legacies’. We are also introducing intensive talk programs on virtual reality, artificial intelligence and block chain in the field of art. The ‘Bahrain Room’, will also be premiered this year at the fair; it is a collaboration between our artisans and designer JJ Vallaya to create bespoke pieces of collectibles and lifestyle retail. The said is in addition to our BAAB Pavilion of 30 artists, 16 international galleries from 14 different countries and 17 artist stands definitely make ArtBAB 2019 an edition to look forward to.

What's next? by the collaboration of Tamkeen, our strategic partner, are in fact the spinal cord of ArtBAB. Their investment to the creative sector is a reflection of the extent of their emphasis on human resource upliftment and development across the country.

What is the history of ArtBAB? Tell us about the journey of Bahrain’s foremost art fair. Most of it has been summed up above. ArtBAB’s story began with my journey in Bahrain. I’ve acquired knowledge about the thriving art scene as well as the passion, warmth and integrity of this beautiful nation. What began as a ‘one-woman enterprise’ has grown into a team of young invested youth, who truly gives every bit of what they have to the project. A perfect example being the Fair Manager Tasneem Al Shurougi.

58 Bahrain Confidential March 2019

Life is all about education – the more we learn, the more we grow. When I set up the art fair, I remember being a part of it from paper to wall; endless nights at set up and endless days on call. Today, ArtBAB is in its fourth edition and my team has grown with it. Each one of them is a part of me. However, they are responsible individual invested in their purpose which is exactly what is needed. At work, we have no timelines and job descriptions and that is the strength of our team. When it comes to purpose, each of them gives 110% and I will forever be proud and in gratitude of each one of them. My team’s capabilities give me a little more time to lay the foundation of what I deem as the next phase – larger and stronger. We have the ingredients of a key creative economy and now that ArtBAB is established, it is now time to take it to the next level. Inshallah, we’ll save that plan for the next interview!n

If you find yourself in a friendship that lacks understanding and decent level of respect or one where just the thought of having to communicate with and be around that person stirs a sense of dread, you might be in a toxic friendship. It can be due to a dynamic where your interactions heavily operate on criticism or manipulation that leaves you feeling anxious upset or even resentful. Perhaps it’s a relationship that causes you to constantly feel you are treading on eggshells just to avoid the next drama. Maybe it is one that has become too demanding and invasive of your time and boundaries. If any of these apply, then it may be time to reevaluate this relationship by weighing it in terms of what it gives you versus what it takes. Really look carefully into the emotional cost of maintaining this friendship and its damaging effects on you and your health and decide to make a change. There are different approaches you can take to find your peace - you can decide to confront your friend and resolve the issues that lead to this unhealthy dynamic between you. You may realize that this is a friendship where you are better off keeping at a distance and engaging in much in smaller doses. In extreme cases, if you find that the friendship is detrimental and causes you more harm than it does you good you may want to consider completely letting go of it. This may seem like a drastic decision, but letting go of a toxic friendship opens up space in your life for healthier, more empowering, and meaningful relationships which in turn can lead to lower stress and a happier life experience. n

Terence McSweeney

Deborah Jones

Dr. Lana Peters

Terence McSweeney A graduate of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, Terence has a wide range of experience from private practice in London, to NHS and university settings. He has developed a particular interest in the treatment of chronic pain after studying an MSc in pain management at the University of Edinburgh. Terence has an additional interest in treating sports injuries, influenced by his love of sports. He uses a range of approaches to facilitate recovery and return to sport including instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation, rehabilitation techniques, dry needling, and osteopathic manipulation. When necessary Terence will take a multidisciplinary approach that involves referral to other specialised clinicians to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Deborah Jones Deborah's many qualifications include a Masters in Osteopathy. As a primary care professional, Deborah likes to listen, observe, diagnose, manage and evaluate in a patient-centred manner. To date, she has enjoyed treating clients in two well-established London clinics and working as a lecturer in Swansea University’s Osteopathy department.

B

ahrain is experiencing an ever-increasing choice in complementary healthcare. From a vision to ‘become a regional health hub’ of just a few years ago, the health sector has grown to offer a diverse range of therapies, encouraged by the foresight of Bahrain’s National Health Regulatory Authority. Back on the Move founder, Lana Peters, heads up the team and is delighted to introduce the Clinic’s three other Osteopaths, Terence, Deborah and Gema together with Dr Abdulrahman, who offers Chiropractic treatments.

Abdulrahman AlHashim Dr. Abdulrahman has been practicing Chiropractic for over 20 years in Los Angeles, California, where his select patient base included many Hollywood starlites. He enjoys his recent move back to the region bringing his vast knowledge and experience in treating neuromusculoskeletal disorders. Chiropractic care involves treatment of the joints in the body especially the spine. Utilizing gentle non surgical techniques for all ages. The chiropractic principle involves spinal corrections to remove pressure off the nerve which allows the body to function at an optimal level and naturally heal itself. He currently offers clinic times both in Bahrain & Saudi Arabia.

Deborah combines osteopathic techniques with dry needling and works integratively with other manual therapists, rehab specialists, nutritionists and mindfulness coaches to help patients get back on the move.

Profile How are you finding Bahrain? I've lived in Bahrain for almost three years now and I absolutely love it. I think life here is simple and relaxed with no pretension. Also, the people here are some of the best I've met; everyone can find their fit in Bahrain. What’s your favourite place in Bahrain and why? It has to be Block 338, Adliya. I love food and eating out so Block 338 is perfect! There are so many restaurants with multiple cuisines, it's a foodie's dream come true! What do you most like, and dislike, about your work? I love the brand I work for, Careem. Careem goes far beyond ride hailing and the company’s vision is very inspiring. Also, everyone who works here are some of the most dedicated people I’ve met and it’s a great energy to work with.

62 Bahrain Confidential March 2019

Dislike: Not much right now, I'm at a very good place with my job. Of course I do have small everyday issues to deal with at work but it’s all part of doing what I do. :) Biggest lesson in life? Pick your battles. If you can change anything in your life, what would it be? I'd take a lot more holidays and travel more. What makes you happy? Really difficult to pick just one but I'm torn between comfort food or a really, really good book. Favorite motto or saying? Excuse me while I kiss the sky - Jimi Hendrix n

Influencers

The Brand that is ME We are all our own walking brands. I’m Brand Luna! I say this because as I progressed up the career ladder, I noticed more and more it wasn’t just about my abilities. In fact, it had a great deal to do with what people’s perceptions were of me. Based largely on what they saw (because it’s quicker) and what they experienced through their own mind filters. Early on I aligned myself with this ‘unfairness’ by perceiving it as an opportunity. As a brand, I realized the importance of mindfully connecting to the message I’m sending. I saw this in layers of my; selfconfidence, attitude, behavior, personal image, wardrobe choices, skills, and how evolving these would enable me to have greater influence on people’s perceptions and my purpose work. At the very core of your brand is your personal mastery. How you ‘surf or tread’ through life’s spiritual lessons and situations. Learning to develop your perceptions/attitudes with life’s changes helps you flow and reap some benefits through personal growth. NO matter your situation or past. Recognize and tap into the Brand that is You’. Give attention to nurturing your brand (YOU). “Oh, what a difference it makes in your life!” It’s like your standing on 4 legs instead of 2 wobbly ones. 1. Get into your own Personal Alignment; care for yourself and perform your personal rituals that make you feel WHOLE and “I'M ENOUGH”, I’M DESERVING of the abundance of opportunities. This includes navigating your mental, verbal and physical patterns (Food, thoughts and emotions). 2. Projecting a Professional Image; How you decide to present yourself; finished look either sporty, smart casual or business formal depending on the situation. This actually makes you feel good! Navigating your attitude and business image via positive demeanor, protocol, diplomacy and etiquette. 3. Managing Time and Pressure; Not being a YES MAN/ WOMAN! Work smart not over hours, BE productive/ get results and have time to live your life! Interested in learning more about your own brand? Please reach out for a personal discovery call. Your time to rise is now. n

Health & Wellness

HV Holistic Health - Move More March 3. Improve your posture It’s common but, not normal for people to get headaches, and back pain caused by poor posture. To avoid this, add a simple series of stretches to your morning routine. Work on mobilising your spine, neck and shoulders.

H

umans are designed to move almost constantly throughout the day, however, many people are stationary for much of the day. Bahrain residents often struggle to move more than 5,000 steps per day, which is half of the recommended daily amount. Lack of movement can cause weight gain, circulation problems, lethargy, sleep dysfunction, hormone imbalance, depression and much more. Simply engaging in non-exercise activity, daily, will help you feel healthier, and happier. Follow HV Holistic Health’s tops tips, to increase your movement this month.

1. Engage in non-exercise activity Pick up the pace on your next mall visit, and see how many steps you can cover. City Centre have a dedicated walk/run program, called the City Walkers, rather than simply exercising your credit card! Get up from your chair, and walk to work while the weather is good, or you can take a speedy walk along the beach.

2. Try a new sport There are so many new sports companies in Bahrain. If you find a sport that you enjoy, exercise will be fun, and not a chore. There are options for everyone, if you want to do water sports, you can paddle board with Beach Culture. If you’d like to stick to dry land you can cycle with the cycling Bees, or you can hit some golf balls at the driving range, or even try your hand at beach volleyball at the Four Seasons.

Send your questions to info@hvholistichealth.com or @hvholistic Andrea Lister - Health & Wellness Practitioner HV Holistic Health & Corrective Training, Tel: 1777 5544

4. Inspire others Try spending your spare time on something that will benefit others, as well as yourself. Join your local beach clean up to get you up and moving, as well as collecting some Vitamin D along the way. Join a local group to aid with charity work, or offer to walk your neighbours dog. The sense of well-being that comes with altruistic actions, is hard to match.

5. Ditch the coffee shop Encourage your friends to join in with an activity, instead of sitting in a coffee shop. Bahrain has some really exciting opportunities if you know where to look. For example, you can try go-karting, track top adventure, the driving range, ice skating, horse riding, and there’s much more.

6. Ditch the lift Finding a set of stairs in a Bahrain mall, can be like looking for a needle in a haystack! However, they’re in every mall, you just have to walk a little further to find them. Using the stairs will work your glutes, hamstrings and challenge your cardiovascular system, too.

7. Move your mind Social media is the modern time thief, that steals hours of your life weekly. Claim your free time back by having social media free days, and use that time to learn a new skill, try a new sport or communicate directly with your friends and family. n

Deliciously Fun Bahrain Confidential tries out Gallery 21’s Friday Brunch.

L

ocated in the stylish complex, Gallery 21 Restaurant is a foodie haven that offers a creative blend of Mediterranean dishes. Just recently, Bahrain Confidential indulged in this uniquely delicious Friday

Brunch!

As always, we cannot stress enough on how much we love the ambiance of the restaurant. Gallery 21 is well-recognized for its special setting – enclosed classic style courtyard with lush greenery and a glass roof. On top of this, the restaurant played on everyone’s senses with its living tropical wall and Washingtonian palm trees, further complemented by decadent bronze life-size statues and Art Deco finishing. Straightaway, we felt comfortable and at ease.

Going Out The Friday brunch offers unlimited food and beverages as well as live cooking stations that includes ceviche and carving station, pasta and dessert section. During the course, we particularly liked the ‘Salmon Wellington’. Creamy, flakey and utterly delicious; we enjoyed every bite of it. Pretty much anything on the menu and the Friday brunch was worth trying. Gallery 21 restaurant’s live ceviches bar definitely stood out from the rest – you do not always get to experience a high-quality ceviche on the island. Aside from using fresh ingredients, it was also beautifully presented. The selection of cheeses was also fantastic! The chef was very attentive during the brunch. He made sure that each of our queries and requests was tended to. The selection of handcrafted cocktails and non-alcoholic cleansers was great – perfect for those who just want to relax after a long week. On another note, the resident band, Energy, made the experience more fun! Every song that they played was extremely enjoyable;

Raising the Steaks

Bahrain Confidential tries out a hearty experience at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s Plums.

P

lums combines fine dining and innovative cuisine, all within an elegant setting. This little gem is a much loved restaurant serving exceptional meats and seafood dishes. We’ve been keen on trying the restaurant’s ‘Sundown Grill’ promotion and just recently, we had the chance to test this meat lover’s dream. The ‘Sundown Grill’ promotion highlights three well constructed courses. We were served bread with a choice of three butters; truffle, chili and standard. We’ve demolished the truffle butter before any of the others but make sure you don’t fill up on the bread because what’s coming next is simply divine! Onto the best part, the steaks! But before that, there was a bit of table-theatre involved with us selecting our steak knife; a choice of English, Japanese, Italian and French are included. We’ve satisfied our steak cravings with 3 of the best cuts – US Black Angus, Australian Kobe Wagyu and Irish grass-fed. Each of the dish was as good as it gets, we savored every minute of enjoying it. Our only complaint was that the meat was so beautifully cooked, that we didn’t want to use any

78 Bahrain Confidential March 2019

of the sauces. Each bite of the steak was so perfect – it felt like a sin to pour something over it… so we ended up using the sauces for our breads. Meats aside, Plums is also paying extra attention to its mouthwatering side dishes and sauces to complement the heavier meaty main course. The side dishes include salad, truffle fries, creamed spinach and sautéed mushrooms. Everything was extremely superb, we had no sense of guilt asking the waiters to prepare our leftovers to take home. ‘Sundown Grill’ at Plums is priced at BD38 per person including one special grape beverage. From the moment we entered until we finished the course, the service was exceptional. The background music lets you soak in the atmosphere while you admire the visually stunning art deco. Topnotch food, stellar service and an impressive ambiance; dining has never been this fun and fulfilling at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain! Meat lovers, take note. n For info and reservations, call +973 1758 6499

The Merchant House Bahrain n Now Ope

Gallery 21 Restaurant hosted a Friday brunch

C

ampbell Gray Hotels makes its debut in the GCC with the opening of its much-anticipated boutique hotel, The Merchant House. We are delighted to say that the property is the first boutique hotel in Bahrain to be awarded a five star rating. The luxurious, 46-suite hotel located at 150 Government Avenue, Manama is an exciting newcomer to the bustling Bab al-Bahrain Souk area and a unique addition to Bahrain’s hotel scene. As usual, being a Campbell Gray Hotel, the design is original and exciting with many pieces having been especially designed and commissioned for the hotel. It also benefits from a striking art collection and a beautiful library, which has been curated especially for The Merchant House. The art collection has been carefully put together over the last few years and consists of very well established and up and coming Bahraini artists as well as international and celebrated artists. As you enter the hotel, one of the first things you see is the dramatic graffiti pillar and the concrete columns in the lobby as a backdrop to first sight of the art collection. Adjoining the lobby is the open all day Café Gray. On the mezzanine floor overlooking the lobby is the hotel’s stunning Library with its carefully curated collection of almost 1000 books. There is also a small meeting room. On the 8th floor, you will find Indigo restaurant and bar with its beautiful outdoor garden terrace. There is also a emerald green rooftop pool and adjoining gym. As in all Campbell Gray Hotels, there is a PureGray Spa. Guests can enjoy an introductory offer of BD99 for the first night with the second night complimentary valid on week days until the end of February 2019. n For more information regarding bookings, please visit www.themerchanthouse.com

Money can buy time… and health!

Charlie Cooksey reviews Fit Kitchen, a restaurant that keeps up with your fitness goals!

T

hey say money can’t buy time, but I beg to differ since being introduced to ‘Fit Kitchen’. As an avid ‘gym rat’ and someone who’s heavily into lifting (pardon the pun), I’m well aware that eating is key. Muscle is not only made in the gym, but in the kitchen too… and the food you eat is just as important as the work you do in the gym. However, living the busy life that I do and getting home late most evenings, preparing the next day(s) meals requires a lot of time in the evening and leaves you with little free time to enjoy. ‘Meal prep’ has gained popularity and is something you see more and more people doing now, it’s plastered all over fitness social media channels/influencers. Meal prep saves costs from buying lunches in cafes and typically it’s healthier as you know what’s in your food. The problem is – preparing meals takes a lot of time and effort.

For more information, contact Fit Kitchen on +973 1710 0140 (Riffa) or +973 1732 2203 (Busaiteen)

88 Bahrain Confidential March 2019

So, allow me to introduce you to Fit Kitchen. Fit Kitchen is a healthy restaurant/ meal prep kitchen offering a variety of tailored and delicious macro counted meals and meal plan packages such as weight loss, muscle gain, vegan etc. Since day one of using their service, I’ve had more time; I do not have to think about mass grocery shopping, cooking or

cleaning up, been healthier and been on track with my meals each day. The best bit? The meals are delicious and the value for money is excellent! I’ve been on the ‘muscle gain programme’ and my package plan includes 3 meals each day plus a tasty healthy snack, 5 days per week. For the whole month – this costs BD165. To save the grocery shopping, the cooking, the time, the preparing and to just have this all delivered to my office? Worth every dinar in my opinion. The plans can be extended to 7 days, or increased to 4 meals or reduced to 2 meals and so on. The meal plans can be tailored specifically to you with a consultation with Fit Kitchen’s Nutritionist; Alana. Alternatively, the restaurant is available on Talabat for meal by meal delivery. Personally I’ve had excellent results from this service (and of course my hard work in the gym!) and gained some lean muscle in the first few weeks of the meal plan and, I hope, I will continue to do so for as long as I am using Fit Kitchen! I find it difficult to describe food in words, so I’d recommend our readers and followers to check out their Instagram page which is always updated with offers, new dishes, packages etc. @fitkitchenbh n

Beautiful Women of Bahrain

Each month, Bahrain Confidential features a beautiful woman living in Bahrain!

Name: Paulina Rutkowska -Gauvry Country of Origin: Poland What do you do in Bahrain/Job title: PR & Marketing expert What do you most like about Bahrain? Bahrain definitely is a pearl in the gulf region because of its rich history and culture. I feel passionate about architecture and design and I’m in love with the traditional Bahraini architecture of Muharraq. I also love the people here. Aside from the heat, what do you dislike about Bahrain? I always try to make more environmentally friendly choices. Here because of the different climate and long distances, it’s not always the easiest choice to make. In the beginning, it was a challenge for me to get used to driving in the huge traffic and find out how to live here in a more sustainable way.

Paulina Rutkowska -Gauvry

Favourite holiday destination? Last year I fell in love with Sri Lanka and this year Vietnam and Cambodia also stole my heart. It’s also nice to come back to Europe to visit new places, see the art exhibitions, galleries and favourite museums. Quote/motto you live by? “I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring” by David Bowie, It’s one line which gives me courage and feel the excitement from taking bold decisions in my life. n
