Editor’s

Letter Welcome back, dear readers! Before you start to gossip – no the magazine hasn’t been on an extreme diet! Like everyone else, this month, the team at BC are having a bit of down-time too; which explains this slightly thinner (but power-packed!) issue. But don’t worry we’ll be back to normal if not even better looking for September! One of fashion’s favorite heroines is the hippiebohemian, with her long flowing dresses, artisanal accessories and open heart. This season, designers have fallen for her again and we’re stoked to have her as our cover girl, setting the mood for all things bright and chirpy. This beautiful muse is a work of art by one of the best names in homes and interior design – check how you can get your walls to do the talking with these artistic creations by Marina Home Interiors (Pg 28). Another of our fashion features sneaks a peak at the stunning millinery creations by a Scotland-based designer (Pg 32). This classic, vintage collection of bespoke hats and headpieces takes style to a different level and is sure to get heads turning. Our Local story (Pg 16) this month is the first of many in our EXCLUSIVE Bahrain Series; we explore the

cobbled streets and lanes of Bahrain’s souqs. Each issue will feature a story which celebrates this island’s rich and vibrant culture, reminding us all how lucky we are to be able to experience all of this first-hand! Super cars and yachts – that’s what luxury is made of, right, boys? We take a look at 6 mondo Italiano hot wheels and their rich legacy (Pg 73). We also list the most expensive charter yachts (Pg 66) that the elite people are holidaying aboard – on-the-deck Jacuzzis, bedrooms offering uninterrupted views of the ocean’s blues, and much more! Ohhh if only…. Egyptian Actor, Oman Sharif sadly lost his battle to Alzheimer’s last month. In this issue, we pay a tribute to this very accomplished star with humble beginnings. We also have new columnists on board and this month we introduce Thomas M Tholoor who gives us the Finance Talk (Pg 58). Food never goes out of fashion – look up our food and dining section for your monthly dose of the best brunches, the most scintillating parties, great lounging options, pool side family fun and more. Until we meet again – stay safe and blessed!

‘Watching’ My Food

Pictures Speak a 1000 Words

OH.MY.GOSH! Stoked to see so many competitions in your magazine! I really hope I’m one of the winners – at least the gym membership. It would motivate me to shed the pounds I’ve gained over the last year. I wouldn’t mind winning a dinner along with that. Food Freak

I’m a student in Bahrain and have a passion for art. I do a lot of illustrations and would like to contribute a few to your magazine. I don’t mind not being paid because I’m a fresher (may be you could make me win one of your competitions!). How do I get in touch with you guys? Illus-TRAITOR

I’m a regular reader of Bahrain Confidential especially the fashion pages. Loved the watches you’ve been featuring over the past few months. I have been collecting watches since I was 16 when my high school sweetheart – now wife – gifted me my first one. I now have over 70! Craig

Dear Food Freak, we try to make everyone a winner so there is no way we’re going to give you both vouchers! And how do you think you’re going to shed those pounds if you’re going to dig into a sumptuous feast after that?

Dear Illus-TRAITOR, thank you for your interest in our magazine. We’re so happy that even young students like yourself enjoy reading us! Drop us a line with some of your work samples on editorial1@arabianmagazines.com and we can take it from there. Like you said, it will be a pro-bono contribution, but we will offer you full credit for your work in print and online. PS: Cross your fingers for our competition winner list!

70 watches! You’re having a great ‘time’ expanding that accessory wardrobe, Craig. Did you pick any of the watches we featured, for your collection?

United For Animal Rights In wake of the many horrendous acts against animals in Bahrain, I couldn’t be more ecstatic about the new law against animal cruelty. It is likely to be implemented in Bahrain and other GCC states by next year. I’ve noticed that some people, locals and expats alike treat these innocent creatures like trash. For

instance, dog fight camps. Kudos to animal lovers and those working toward animal rights protection. Martha Dear Martha – we couldn’t agree more! Bahrain Confidential has always been an animal friendly magazine and we hope the law is implemented as soon as poss!

HOT! HOT! HOT! The weather is so hot and dusty that I hardly want to step out. But you got to do whatcha got to do (read run errands for groceries, pick the kids from school, walk the dogs…)! The summer hacks you published last month were very useful and helped me stave off the heat – thanks! Lynn We’re following every one of those tips too, Lynn. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Omar Sharif became a film star in his native country before his Oscar nomination role in Lawrence of Arabia. As a tribute, here are a few facts of the wellacclaimed actor and legend. • Attending an English school growing up, helped him to establish his love for theatre. • He can speak six languages. He enjoyed acting in English language films. He was already a star in Egypt before he made his big move to Hollywood. weight and joined theatre in his English school, that he actually developed a liking for acting. Talk about motivation! • He was originally called Michael Shalhouz. Few of his known alternate names were Michel Demitri Chalhoub, Omar El Cherif, Omar Cherif and Michael Demitri Shalhoub. • His role in Lawrence of Arabia earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor as well as Golden Globe wins for Supporting Actor and New Star of The Year. • He co-starred with Barbra Streisand in the well-acclaimed 1968 musical, Funny Lady. • He loved playing bridge. He once played contract bridge in front of the Shah of Iran. • Omar head-butted a French police officer in 2003, brawled with a parking attendant at Beverley Hills couple of years later and was once caught slapping a woman on camera in 2011. Alright then! • He was huge Hull City FC football fan.

As someone said, Omar Sharif, for all his idiosyncrasies, will always be a LEGEND.

SUGAR & SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE!

Spice trade is an important part of Arab history thanks to the Silk Route. This ancient network of trade and cultural transmissions is considered to be a mix of land and sea routes. If you take a look at the map you can see that all of the routes converged in the Middle East! That made the Arabs, middlemen between East and West. They received everything from textiles, perfumes, jewels, and slaves to produce sugar and spices, and either made use of all the loot themselves or passed it on to the Europeans with a markup. Arab food is usually spicy and strongly flavoured. Bahraini curries are seasoned with cardamom, cinnamon, saffron and lime, and are quite pungent. You must already know that Bahraini Halwa, locally known as Halwa Showaiter is one of the oldest traditional sweets in the Kingdom – over 150 years old! But how is it different from other Asian variants of the dish and how did this prized recipe make its way to the island’s shores? Unlike many Asian countries where the sweet dish is prepared with semolina or flour, Bahrain uses corn starch and rapeseed oil. The original recipe was different and invented on the island of Zanzibar, in Tanzania. The Omanis, who have always maintained close commercial ties with them, were the first to introduce it to the Gulf which then the Showaiter family adopted and personalised.

AHLAN WA SAHLAN!

Bahrain’s souqs contribute in a big way to its tourism sector. A number of tourists flock to these traditional markets, a veritable cacophony of sights, sounds, scents, tastes and textures all displayed in gloriously haphazard excess along the narrow rabbit warren streets. There is truly something for everyone, from gold jewellery, exotic spices and perfumes to singing cuddly camels. Local coffee shops, some of which have been around for over 30 years, are a huge hit with tourists and locals alike. This quaint little ‘café’ (see image) is tucked away in one of the many lanes in Manama souq. The wall against which the traditional benches are set up is adorned with beautiful framed photographs showing Bahrain’s rich history. You would find local men enjoying a gahwa over board games or even tourists digging into traditional dishes at this venue. There are number of shops dotting the streets at the entrance of Manama souq (Bab Al Bahrain), selling ethnic souvenirs and other knick knacks which are a hit with collectors and tourists. Ahlan Wa Sahlan is used to express Arab hospitality to strangers. The term literally translates as – Ahlan which means ‘family’ as in ‘you’ve come to stay with family’ and Sahlan which means ‘flat land or plain where grass/food is abundant and to be shared with visitors’. We will be continuing our EXCLUSIVE Local Series in the upcoming issues of Bahrain Confidential.

poem

David Hollywood reflects upon and describes as well as captures the customs and atmosphere of our famous market and cultural heartland; ‘Bahrain Souq’ (Bahrain Market).

I enter through the caverns mouth, Into a bustling fair, And all about there’s shouts without, Of rumoured trades allure, And goods not seen before, Which tempt me to procure, The promises of treasures yet, In prizes that assure, Their purchase is reward offset, By lures that reassure.

With taunts for senses that embrace, The mocking of the baste I face, Consumed by what I ate to see, Enchants the savoured fare in me. Through captured webs that now ensnares.

Rewards for detoured routes along, The crowded alleys throng, Show value which desires convince, Are things that must belong, And rambling round with quick turned views, Towards the coaxing news, The voices claim there’s bargains where, My presence needs to view, Temptations chance to sense delight , In thoughts that looks excite.

‘It’s real fake gold, that’s genuine, And guaranteed as well! Authentic bargains forged and caste, To reproduce the feel, In copied imitations which proves that makes them real, Invented replications, the first that’s made to last, These bargains from originals, Cannot be passed for class, But values shall determine who, Will buy them with a clasp.’

And narrow lanes enclosed as walls, Where shadows lurk in dark, I hear the voices spot me through, The jostling crowds remark, That hustle me upon the sight, When calling to my shoulders height, They aim to bring my eyes about, And once they’ve caught me with their stares, It forces me to see their wares,

‘Khaki style is very nice, Great quality’s the price, Expensive watches that are cheap, And lovely scarves to keep, Buy two! Their soft, Designed by craft, As presents for your wife, Plus phones are here, made smart for life, And never give you strife! Fine sir! see shoes, I have good news,

20 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

Look here I’ve what you want.’ Material thats tough and strong, Adjustable to suit, The shapes are fine, The length is mine, My size is cut anew, In colours long and true, The price is fixed, I turn amidst, the frantic deal thats done, And once my venues trades complete, I’m left back on the street. I leave to brave, The next new wave, Through alley’s tight with song, Of yells that roar about the treats, That stir commotions strong, And various the products throng, Calls out the news in beats, As carpets, hats and glasses long, To mix with pens and fabrics, sheets, In answers from the streets.

Each shops a stall of passaged strength, That’s packed to cramp each inches length, Supporting of the space that’s meant, To never waste through empty room, What chance the counters can but show to whom. You look below your ankles height, To find the floors a display site, And shelves rise up in acme’d flight, To reach the ceiling packed upright. And narrow spaces at the end, Opens a cave that scents transcend, Exotic smells that waft about, Are odour’s as my dreams reach out, Towards my weakness for the taste Of what lays bare a flavour laced,

This souq’s a tour of strange pursuit, An abstract quest through charms delight, Attractions draw my course and route, As witness sent by its invite. This life’s enlightened maze and track, Ensures remembrance brings me back.

talent

Each month, we bring you one ordinary reader who wows you with his/her extraordinary talent. This month we put...

Anusha Das

In The Spotlight

Anusha Das is a diehard otaku*! An Indian by origin, she recently won a prize for ‘Good Story’ in the first Korean Speech Contest, organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Bahrain.

How did it start?

I started watching anime (Japanese animation) during high school. Gradually, I found out about Manga (Japanese comics), cosplay and further explored Japanese culture through music and drama. Eventually, I got into Korean drama, K-pop (Korean music), Manhwa (Korean comics), Taiwanese drama, etc.

What she also does?

I’ve experimented with Japanese and Korean karaoke and comic sketches, and am also teaching myself some sewing to create my own Cosplay costumes. I also joined Korean language classes organised by the Embassy. I could go on and on all day long!

Favourite Comic Character

There are way too many but to choose one - Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg and the squad leader of Public Security Section 9 because she is such a strong personality and a woman leading a squad. Image Credit: Enosh Kumar/EK Tsubasa

Favourite Korean Word "Omma" which means 'Mother'.

What was your story for the competition about?

It was a simple story about the similarities between India and South Korea. For instance, apparently 5 million out of the Korean population of 50 million including the wife of President, Lee Myung Bak are believed to have distant blood-ties to India. I had drafted my speech in English and my teacher helped me translate it into Korean. It took me some practice but I managed to read it alright.

Best Comic-Con Experience

I'm yet to experience anime/comic conventions worldwide but my first was Animania and I really had a ball! I've also attended BANICON and it was an amazing experience and very well organised.

The future of Anime is.......?

Unfortunately, the industry is slowly diminishing. Unethical streaming and downloading practices, economic recession, and various other factors have affected sales, making it tougher to earn profits in this business. This is deterring sponsors, as well as the younger generation who is not as keen as before to pursue a career in anime and manga. But I hope for the best and also urge fans to support animators and mangaka by buying DVDs, mangas and other merchandise. *a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly the anime and Manga fandom 22 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

SQUALE - PROFESSIONAL DIVING WATCHES Time to wrap Squale on your wrist and take a dip.

24 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

sheer luxury Form follows function, minimalistic design, high quality, elegant and reliable- the basics of every Squale watch. Founded in 1946 by "von Büren S.A. / Montres" (Neuchâtel / Swiss) the Squale brand is pioneer in the creation, evolution and development of dive-watches. Let’s turn back to the year 1946. Von Büren S.A / Montres had began to produce watches and watchcases because they saw the need for reliable, safe and elegant dive-watches. Founder, Charles von Büren was a passionate diver and had personally tried and tested the watches, focused on the needs during real-life situations, redesigned and developed these exquisite watches to perfection. Slowly, a number of small-scale and large-scale watch-brands had started to use Squale as a specialist supplier when diving became a popular sport in the 1960 and the need for a diver’s watch was growing fast. Squale was a divewatch that was mainly sold at only dive speciality shops rather than jewellery stores. After years of uniqueness, the famous and unique “von Büren” cases became the blueprint for the perfect diving watch. Form follows function, minimalistic design, high quality, elegant and reliablethe basics of every Squale watch. A helium release valve is a potential risk factor and a part that can easily fail. Squale, being the specialist dive-watch manufacturer they are, saw this safety problem and invented a way to overcome and increase safety and reliability. By the end of 1960, Squale introduced the first Squale 1000-meter divers-watch with a unique glass on flexible double mountings that didn’t require a helium release valve. Over the years, Squale became the preferred choice of watch for world-champions free-diving and spear fishing like Jaques Mayol, Maria Treleani, Jean Tapu, Tony Salvatori and the Cuban national team of 1967.

Squale watches are exclusively available at The Watch Boutique, Gate 7, Seef Mall For more information, call 1753 0329 Bahrain Confidential August 2015 25

The new Rado DiaMaster Grande Seconde collection is made of six eye-catching models, two in black ceramic and four in plasma ceramic. Out of the four in plasma ceramic, three are with brown leather straps and one with a grey leather strap. This collection focuses on leather straps with only one model featuring the famous DiaMaster five-link bracelet.

Let’s talk fabulous technology!

A brilliant warm metallic shine emerges from white ceramic when it is treated in a plasma oven where gasses are activated at 20,000oC. This magical transformation is achieved through a patented process that was first used by Rado. Without the use of any metal, the unique plasma colour emerges from each piece of ceramic and does not fade over time. Plasma ceramic changes the colour of the entire piece.

About The Designer

Zena Presley

Inspiration behind the collection: I was first inspired by a particular painting that I saw- its beauty was captivating, and as beautiful as it looked on a wall, I felt that the paintings should be portrayed in more creative ways where people can stand the chance to enjoy its beauty. That is where the idea for this collection stemmed from, and I instantly fell in love with the concept. The inspiration for my debut collection sparked from a painting of an African woman. It had a lot of strong emotion, and it intrigued me to look more into the African history and culture, and the more I researched, the deeper in love I fell. A history full of compelling stories of hope, struggle and love. A lot of my pieces emphasise the strength of a woman, which was paramount in my collection. What sparks your creativity? Sometimes inspiration could come from something really unexpected, which is why I always try to take in all the beauty surrounding me. I never know what could spark an inspiration or an idea. Travel is the perfect break from a busy schedule, where I have the chance to emotionally grasp all my surroundings and allow creativity to take over. It exposes me to things I wouldn’t normally see. It could be a painting that I stumble upon at an art gallery, a picturesque scene of nature or even a busy afternoon in the traditional local markets. It’s just the perfect time to get inspired and start thinking about my next collection. Favourite material to work with: When choosing the material I work with, I try to make sure I choose something that will portray the painting and the person wearing my collection in the best way, while still having the volume and flow that complements the styles and cuts. Materials like neoprene, satin and crepe, are the main materials I work with. Top summer trends: This summer is all about statement pieces, especially skirts. A statement skirt is the perfect piece that could go from day to night and can be styled to suit any occasion. This is the reason why my staple pieces are the Zena Presley statement skirts. I am also a big fan of jumpsuits and shirt dresses, they are so effortlessly stylish, whether to the beach or an evening stroll, they are just the perfect choice while travelling; To sum up the summer trends, I would say anything with volume and flow. 44 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

ANATOMY OF THE SOUL

WHO AM I?

opinion A soul is like a seed which contains all necessary information for its expression when planted in a body. Just as a seed forms into a particular plant when sown in the earth and sustained with water, sunshine and fertile soil, so a human being comes to life when a human soul enters an embryo. That moment of entry is called the quickening and is indicated by the first movement in the foetus. A soul will take a body according to its karma (action) and personality traits. Personality traits take the form of latent tendencies, habits or behavioural characteristics.

LOCATION OF THE SOUL

The seat of the soul is in the center of the forehead. What is the evidence for that? There are many signs we use and actions we perform which indicate that this is the place of the soul. For example, Hindu women will wear a bindi (dot) or tilak in that place. In Hindu temples it is customary to put a tilak of sandal paste on the forehead of the devotees and the pujari (Hindu priest). In the Jewish religion, the rabbis place a miniature book of the Torah in a tiny box and tie it to their foreheads during their morning rituals. Christians place holy water on the forehead during the ceremony of baptism and when entering a Roman Catholic church. Ashes are also placed on the forehead during certain religious festivals. There is physiological evidence that the interface between the energy of the mind and the nervous system occurs in the hypothalamus, a gland situated in the brain slightly behind the centre of the forehead. The soul occupies no space in the physical body since it is not physical, but it animates the body and operates it via the brain and nervous system. The soul also receives signals from the body. It is a symbiotic relationship. The energy of communication between the two is the power of thought which is analogous to the energy of electricity. This energy is consciously heightened through meditation.

DESCRIPTION AND FACULTIES

A soul is invisible to the physical eye because it is not material. Through our physical eyes we can see only material objects. We do have another eye, sometimes called the inner eye, the third eye or divine vision, through which the incorporeal soul can be perceived as an infinitesimal point of light energy. This is the soul, the conscious animating force. This is the conscient self. The first step of Raja Yoga Meditation is to consider yourself as a soul, a tiny pinpoint of light that is self-aware. Using its subtle faculty called the mind, a soul will think, “I am aware of myself and of my existence. I am aware that I think and feel, but I am not my body”. The predominant and essential quality of a soul is peace. This is the significance of the expression Om Shanti, which means, “I am a soul at peace”. This affirmation is a continuous reminder to consider the self as peaceful. Other inherent qualities of a soul are love, power, purity, happiness and bliss. This peaceful, serene point of self-aware light energy (you) has three faculties that are the subtle organs for expression of consciousness. They are: - Mind - Intellect - Impressions or personality traits (sanskaras) These faculties operate in conjunction with each other in a cyclic way. The incarnated soul expressing itself through the body is a living human being. A soul expresses itself consciously and subconsciously. The soul is conscious of 52 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

opinion the external material world through the physical senses: touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. As the soul performs karma (actions) through the instrument of the physical body, it experiences the consequences of those actions through the physical body. Some consequences occur immediately, others later. Each action which the soul performs leaves an impression on the soul. This impression is called a sanskara. The sanskara manifests itself as an inner compulsion or a thought arising. Thoughts have a tendency to be expressed as action, and this reinforces the originating sanskara or impression. It is normal to think of the self as a body, but natural to think of the self as a soul. The soul and the body are both mutable and so both are influenced and affected by action and experiences. The soul and the body are also affected by time, which causes both to degenerate.

THE CYCLIC PROCESSES WITHIN CONSCIOUSNESS

There is an internal cycle and a cycle that links the internal with the external material world. The flow of the soul’s energy it moves instantaneously from one faculty to the next in the inner cycle, translates into action via the body, and returns to the inner cycle as an impression or sanskara. Although is is an endless and unstoppable cycle, for the purpose of analysis, we can observe the following: 1- A thought arises in the mind. 2- That thought has the potential to come into action. 3- Before becoming an action, the thought passes before the intellect, conscience, or moral consciousness. 4- Then it is judged and either accepted or not accepted (however, a weak intellect is unable to prevent that thought from recurring). 5- If it is accepted, it becomes expressed as an act (a sustained thought, a word or an action). 6- If it is not accepted, it simply disappears or stops. 7- Once an act is performed it has several effects: It has a consequence and provokes repercussions. It forms a sanskara. It will provoke a new similar thought. It will provoke a response from the external world. It forms an imprint upon the soul. 8- The impact and memory of thoughts, words and actions are stored in the deep memory track. 9- The impact of actions and experiences can manifest as dreams. 10- A new thought arises in the mind and the cycle resumes. A thought can arise in the mind because of a sensory perception (something you see, hear, touch, smell or taste). Or because of a memory or a stimulus from the intellect. Could be also because of a spoken or written command, instruction, information, etc‌ or because of a sanskara. This is the basic process that operates in the most complex and extraordinary phenomenon, which we call the human soul or consciousness. This understanding sheds light on other more subtle and profound aspects of spirituality and the development of values. Rita Moussalem Raja Yoga Meditation

Travel Yoga Who doesn’t love travelling; every single person loves to travel, to experience new things, have new adventures, finally take that time off work and just relax and process your thoughts. We all love it. What we are not too fond of is the journey to your travel destination. Sitting in that cramped position for hours together, while your seatmate steals half of your leg and arm space. It’s the uncomfortable feeling you have in your legs or hands while being sandwiched between two people that gets to you. Well, we figured why not show you a few yoga postures that will help bring the blood to the sleepy parts of your body.

#1 Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana)

Place your right fingertips on the floor. Your right toes should face forward. Lift your left leg, keeping your torso turned toward the wall. Reach your left arm toward the ceiling, keeping the standing right leg straight, without hyper flexing the knee. Repeat on other side. Benefits: Improves balance, engages the core, stimulates leg muscles. Result: Wakes up sleepy legs and brains.

#2 Half Dog (Ardha Adho Makha Svanasana)

Place your fingertips on the wall at hip-height. Walk back and bend from your hips until your legs and torso are a 90-degree angle with the floor, ankles directly underneath your hips. Benefits: Opens chest, shoulders, back, and hamstrings. Result: Relieves lower back pain

54 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

health updates

#3 Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)

From extended side angle, shift your torso back to vertical, facing the wall. Reach your arms away from the torso, sinking your hips deeper. Draw your navel to your spine and gaze beyond the fingertips of your front hand. Benefits: Opens inner thighs, strengthens quads and calves, improves ankle and core stability, stimulates slow-twitch fibers in shoulders and torso. Result: FREEDOM OF SPACE

Benefits: Strengthens your shins, legs, glutes, core, and arms. Result: Wakes up all those parts of your body that don’t get enough blood flow when you are constantly sitting.

#6 #4 Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Planting one foot firmly on the floor, bring the bottom of the other foot to the inside of the standing leg’s calf or upper thigh. Keep a wall within reach in case you need to balance. Switch legs and repeat. Benefits: Improves balance, opens hips, engages core, improves ankle stability and foot arch strength. Result: Stretching and strengthening the back and side of your leg (and core) that get stiff during long travels.

Standing Split (Urdhva Prasarita Eka Padasana)

From your glorious forward bend, lift one leg up the wall or the door to intensity the stretch. Keep the standing leg straight and your fingertips on the floor for balance. Repeat on other leg. Benefits: Deepens the hamstring stretch and opens your hip flexors. Result: Tests flexibility, stretches legs, and sends a bit more blood to the brain.

Chair Pose (Utkatasana)

Bring your feet together or hip-width apart. Sit as you sit on an imaginary chair, back straight. Reach your fingertips toward the ceiling. Gaze upwards, drawing your head back.

Taste Life!

The less time people spend worrying about nutritional myths, the better their overall health and happiness will be, says John Ridley John R Ridley

S

ooner or later, everything we’re told about the implied links between diet and health gets overturned. For years, we’ve been told that dietary fibre could reduce the risk of cancer or heart disease; in 2005 we learned that there was no evidence to support the claims. Then, in 2006, the myth of low fat diets reducing the risk of coronary heart disease was also blown away. Corporate dietary advice, to which we are all subject, has not made us any healthier; on the contrary, most of the nutritional advice we’ve received over the last half century has made us less healthy and considerably fatter - and food manufacturing companies very wealthy. Again, in 2006, two prestigious institutions released results of studies into the health benefits of eating oily fish, the conclusions were contradictory; one study found little evidence of the health benefits; the other study suggested that a couple servings of fish each week would cut the risk of dying from heart disease by more than a third. Using only the conclusions of the latter report, the marketers of the food industry bombarded us with fishy claims of the health benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids contained within their products. Until the 1960s, we successfully managed our diet without industry guidance; how deciding what to eat became 56 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

“We forget that historically people have eaten for many reasons, not just for nutrition, but also pleasure, community, family, and spirituality.” so complex reveals much about the food industry and the apparent scientific claims made for the packets lining supermarket shelves. That eating should be solely about nutrients is a relatively new and destructive concept; marketing hype has become so pervasive, we forget that historically people have eaten for many reasons, not just for nutrition, but also pleasure, community, family, and spirituality.

Study after study has shown the benefits of eating as a community - not least, that we eat less when sharing meals with others. Yet, the food manufacturing industry’s marketing departments encourage us to consume their products in the car, at our desks, in front of the TV, and, increasingly, alone. In Italy, processed food is less pervasive than in much of the western world; Italians having maintained their age-old food culture have substantially lower rates of heart disease than those who blindly follow the corporate dietary promotion of elaborately engineered industrial low-fat diets. Science has yet to test the proposition, but I’m willing to bet that when it is, they’ll find the less time people spend worrying about nutritional myths, the better their overall health and happiness will be.

MANAGING YOUR PERSONAL FINANCE

P

ersonal finance is the management of personal financial resources by taking into account the various risks; return objectives and other personal requirements. In addition to an individual, a personal trust or family trust also falls within the wider definition of personal finance. You are the architect of your own future. Drawing up a financial plan is the most important requirement in managing your personal finance. Assessing your financial resources and taking steps to properly manage them is crucial.

Assessment of financial position:

This involves the assessment of your personal net worth by listing the values of all assets (like house, land, car, bank accounts, and investments), liabilities (like bank loans, credit card outstanding and mortgage debt) and preparing a personal income statement that shows income and expenses.

Setting objectives:

The purpose is to set your return objectives and risk tolerance levels. The return is the total of current income from investments and any capital gains thereof. The return objective includes both short-term and long-term financial requirements. For example, having funds for a car purchase in a year's time, saving enough funds for wedding expenses for the near future, and having a net worth of $1,000,000 for retirement. The risks include various risks relating to any investment and any unforeseen risks like terminal illness, disability, death, etc. Investment risks can be reduced through diversification of investments. You have to ensure that the investments provide adequate liquidity to meet financial requirements. Insurance policies can provide protection against the unforeseen risks to an extent.

Formulating a plan:

Once objectives are set, the next step is to create a plan to achieve them. You need to allocate your resources through an asset allocation plan by deciding how much funds you need to keep in cash under the

58 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

pillows, savings bank accounts, checking accounts and term deposits to meet your short-term requirements. You need to plan for paying insurance premium periodically and for contributing to any retirement plan. Any excess funds can be invested in stocks for long-term capital growth. Allocating funds for any high-risk investments such as private equity or real estate depends on your excess net-worth. Plans on your estate as to whom your estate will pass after your death also can be done at this stage. It’s best to consult an expert in financial planning to guide you through this process.

Implementing the plan:

The implementation involves actions such as opening bank accounts, setting up retirement saving accounts, buying suitable insurance policies after necessary consultation with an insurance agent, opening a brokerage account for stock investments and seeking the broker's opinion on purchases and sales. While executing the plans, you need to pay attention to any reducing tax incidence.

Review and Monitoring:

Any changes in your personal circumstances can warrant changes in your financial plan and in turn in its implementation. You need to monitor the performance of investment portfolio and its suitability to your changing circumstances.

Tenets to Follow:

You need to follow certain important points while managing your finances. Some important ones are: a. Spend less than what you earn: Live within your means and save little from your earnings. b. Pay yourself first: Set apart funds for any emergency needs and retirement. c. Understand the difference between wants and needs. d. Manage your Credit card debt prudently: Try to minimise your credit card debt and pay it off on time to avoid surprises. e. Start saving while you are young: Build up the habit of saving at your younger age even if it a small amount. Remember little drops of water make a mighty ocean. f. Learn the power of compounding: Understand the power of compounding and let your accrued earnings grow over time. g. Keep aside a small amount for charity. h. Involve your life-partner in financial decisions.

With the above principles, you will be able to better manage your personal finance. Good luck!

INVESTMENT 101 Angela McDonough continues the two-part feature on Europe's most lucrative destinations and this month we look at the first 5.

Languedoc in France

Bulgaria is the dark horse as it still has a distance to go in terms of capital growth and you can purchase a beachfront property on a 5 star resort for €80K. It has also seen so much EU investment that you cannot help being excited with the prospects. It also weathered the storm during the last financial crisis which caught the eye of the IMF who replicated some of the banking practices. Your exit-strategy is the Russian investor who loves this holiday destination.

CYPRUS – No. 4

With a fantastic climate the whole year round and so much to offer in terms of lifestyle, Cyprus remains to be a firm favourite with expats and retirees. With stunning beaches and beautiful landscapes it is no surprise why it continues to attract foreign investors. Also, if you have at least €2.5m to invest, you can claim citizenship for your whole family.

SPAIN – No. 3

There has been no better time to buy with prices at rock bottom and starting to rise ever so slightly. This has always been a firm favourite being the 2nd most visited destination in Europe. Better to buy property that will stand the test of time as you need to be in for the long, long term. You can also obtain the golden visa which will provide visa-free travel for your whole family which is an added bonus!

UNITED KINGDOM – No. 2

One of the top investment countries in Europe and is it any wonder? With some of the best universities, student accommodation can achieve rental yields of 7%+, however, select wisely if you are want capital growth also. If your focus is on capital growth then London is the best choice with some boroughs boasting 20%+ growth, offsetting a lower rental return of 2-3%. With the constant stream of regeneration projects, UK always has something to offer the investor.

FRANCE – No. 1

What is there not to love? France remains to be the most visited country in the world which drives up the need for tourist accommodation. So if you decide to invest in a property in France, the French government will refund you the 20% VAT if you sign a rental contract for at least 10yrs+ AND guarantee a net rental return of at least 4% for the whole term of the rental contract (and beyond if you wish). It is also one of the safest countries to purchase with the legal system weighted toward protecting the consumer. France also provides mortgages with low interest rates and favourable tax incentives. So for strong, solid and stable growth, this is our number one country for investing.

Summer in

Seychelles By Ujala Ali Khan

Seychelles: they say it’s as pure as it gets. Spread like gemstones across the sea, this archipelago of 115 islands is a luxuriant tropical paradise: a world flourishing in splendid isolation, far from the stresses of a hectic planet.

With a total of 16 inhabited islands, you are literally spoilt for choice in the Seychelles. Each island is unique in character and ambiance, and you must stay on at least two different islands during your stay. Most visitors pick one main island as their base, and explore the rest by island-hopping. Transfers between the islands are mainly by light aircraft and the majority of transfers originate from Mahe – making Mahe the ideal base to explore from.

MAHÉ – THE ISLAND PARADISE

Measuring just 142 sq km, Mahé boasts a coastline of 127 km and is sprinkled with gorgeous beaches. Beau Vallon on Mahe is one of the largest and most popular beaches in the Seychelles. The sand is good, clean and relatively free of rocks. A big break in the reef can sometimes cause the waves to be large, but that just adds to the character. The beach is about 3km west of Victoria – the capital of Seyhcelles – which is one of the smallest capital cities in the world, and the only major port in the Seychelles. This little town has been

virtually untouched since the colonial times and the architecture reflects this. With the courthouse and main post office in the centre of town, you’ll fall in love with this quaint old world charm of this place.

SEASIDE ACTIVITIES

In the Northern part of the island, near Bel Ombre and Danzilles, lies Anse Major – a gorgeous beach reached either by boat or an hour’s walk. For nature lovers, the walk to Anse Major is a treat. The trail offers a stunning view over the ocean and of dense vegetation, before finally leading you to the beautiful Anse Major. Just ensure you wear proper footwear and set out at the right time, as the sun sets quite early in Seychelles. Snorkeling along Anse Major or any of the other beaches is a must. In fact, water sports are obviously the most readily available activities considering the fact that you are on a very small island.

SNORKELING

Many of the snorkeling spots are close to the beach, although the best spots are just off the rocky

shorelines. Most beach hotels supply snorkeling equipment on a rental basis, or you can sign up with a local tour operator and go on a day cruise aboard a yacht which will take you to remote beaches with excellent snorkeling and all equipment will most likely be supplied. Just remember to wear sandals or fins while snorkeling. There are a lot of see urchins in the Indian Ocean and it can be very painful to set your foot on one on while wading.

CORAL REEF DIVING

The most popular underwater activity in Seychelles is no doubt coral reef diving: there are more than 900 species of fish and over 100 species of coral. The fish are unafraid and excellent visibility means you can practice underwater photography too. Head to the Coral Strand Hotel on Mahe to join excursion organised by the Seychelles Underwater Centre, a PADI 5 Star IDC Center. Don’t fret if you haven’t done it before: they also offer introductory scuba lessons, complete certification and advanced courses. All this activity makes one very, very hungry. Luckily, Creole cuisine comes to the rescue.

sun sets early in the tropics and goes down very quickly. It gets dark by about 6:30, so be careful when you start a walk and be sure to estimate the time you will need to return. You don’t want to be walking through the jungle or on slippery rocks in the dark!

ISLAND HOPPING

Island-hopping to the islands of Praslin and La Digue is highly recommended. Praslin is the second largest islands in Seychelles and is home to what it touted to be the most beautiful beach on earth: Anse Lazio. Vallee de Mai on Praslin is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has the Seychelles’ greatest concentration of coco de mer palms. La Digue is Seychelles’ fourth largest islands and is celebrated for its large granite boulders that seem to have been sculpted by a divine hand. A word of advice for all travelers to the country: respect nature. Coral is beautiful underwater so leave it there for others to see. The same goes for shells, so don’t collect them on the beach. Let’s leave this piece of paradise as we found it!

WHEN TO GO

Sega a dance form of Seychelles which involves swaying one’s hips and shuffling one’s feet. There are other dance forms too.

CREOLE CUISINE

Creole cooking takes advantage of the resources of the sea and the creativity of the inhabitants. The food – always pleasant and often outstanding – will make you discover the pleasure of new tastes and flavors. The best news is that Muslims who are particular about Halal food will have to stop worrying about looking for vegetarian options, as Creole cuisine is mostly seafood. Highly recommended is Feroce – a dish with avocado, hot pepper, manioc and cod. Be warned, though, if your palate is unaccustomed to spices … this one is fiery hot! You can also try accras (also called amarinades, these are hot doughnuts made from cod or vegetables), dombre (small flour croquette), ouassous (big freshwater crayfish) and wash it down with ti-punch (a drink made of rum, cane sugar or cane sugar syrup and lime).

AROUND MAHÉ

For some light-hearted sigh-seeing, take the road of Sans Soucis starting in Port Glaud up until you reach the tea factory. The road goes through the Morne Seychellois National Park with breathtaking views all along the way. Enjoy a look around the factory and learn what goes into making tea. You can also buy different kinds of tea at a 62 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

little shop just outside. If you leave the factory and drive further down, you will see fields of lemon grass that yield one of the best known teas in Mahé. Also worth visiting is Le Jardin du Roi (King’s Garden) – a spice garden situated at Anse Royale, at the feet of Mont Gratte-Fesse. This is an old colonial mansion transformed into a museum and the surroundings planted with all sort of plants and trees. There are 50 varieties of plants and trees including cinnamon tree, cardamom, nutmeg tree, avocado tree, orchids and of course, the Coco de Mer tree, both male and female!

THE BEACHES

There are so many beaches on Mahé, it’s really difficult to choose which one you will spend your time at. The lovely Beau Vallon probably has the most people per square foot of sand! Be careful of some of the wild beaches though. The undercurrents are quite strong in all of Seychelles and particularly in the wild beaches – Anse Intendance on Mahé, for example. Don’t venture where it is advised not to swim. When you’re in Seychelles, remember to drive carefully too: roads are quite narrow and the locals drive fast! There is no hard shoulder on the side of the road, so it can be dangerous, especially at night. Furthermore, the

VISITING MELBOURNE… AND BEYOND! Bahrain Confidential visits Australia’s smallest mainland state.

M

elbourne is known as Australia’s “Culture Capital” and is just an hour’s flight from Sydney, but the two cities have very different atmospheres and cultures. Where Sydney is tropical and New World, Melbourne is cooler and has an “old world”, European feel to it. In fact we have heard it described as being as a European city ‘should’ be. First a few facts – Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria, located at the South-eastern corner of Australia. The state has a total population of 5.55 million, of which most (4.08 million) are living in Melbourne. The climate varies between 21ºC-34ºC in summer, and -1ºC-12ºC in winter. The city has one of the highest densities of commercial art galleries anywhere in the world, with more than 130 art galleries and museums; it boasts the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere, Museum Victoria; it has the largest collection of Australian art on permanent display at the Ian Potter Centre “NGV Australia”; it has a rich history of literary culture and creative talent and was recently appointed as a UNESCO City of Literature; it is home to a third of all Australian writers and to Australia’s publishing sector.

Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens contains an impressive 51,000 plants representing 12,000 species. These are arranged as an extensive ornamental garden, in which botanical collections and plants of historical interest are aesthetically integrated. Australia has the greatest food in the world and we took time out one morning to visit the Queen Elizabeth Market. Every stallholder seemed to be an expert in their own particular produce and happy to discuss it - and offer free sample tasters. Tasting our way around the market was a delight and made us wish we had something similar in these parts. If sport is ‘your thing’, each year Melbourne plays host to tens of thousands of interstate and overseas visitors who come to see the Australian Open Tennis Championships, the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian 500CC Motorcycle Grand Prix, Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian Football League Grand Final, and many more sporting events. The Melbourne Cup, ‘the race that stops the nation’, is the richest handicap race in the world, run annually on the first Tuesday of November. 5 cool things to do outside of Melbourne… 1. Victoria boasts 36 national parks and 13 marine national parks as well as a number of state parks, regional parks, botanical gardens, wilderness reserves, metropolitan parks, reservoir parks, and aboriginal cultural heritage reserves.

2. The Great Ocean Road is a 243-kilometre stretch of road along the south-eastern coast of Australia. The road trip is recommended by Conde Naste as one of the ten must-do drives in the world. We took a couple of days to explore it and have many warm memories, including visiting the famous Twelve Apostles limestone formations. 3. Located 20 minutes’ drive inland from Apollo Bay, The Otway Fly Treetop Walk is an hour-long treetop rainforest walk along a 600 metre long and 30 metre high steel structured treetop canopy. It is the longest and tallest walkway of its type in the world. 4. Victoria’s spa centre towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, located 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne, are surrounded by more than 60 natural mineral springs. These spa towns are havens for holistic health and wellbeing with more than 200 therapies on offer. 5. The spectacular Grampians National Park, located 3.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne, encompasses an area that is more than 500 million years old and 100 kilometres long and 50 kilometres wide. A number of Aboriginal tribes live in the region and regard the park as a sacred place.

cars

The Italian Legacy Check out these six mondo Italiano hot wheels with a rich history.

The Ferrari 125 S

Italian cars, in particular, sports cars and luxury cars, enjoy a reputation worldwide for design and speed. The Italian automobile industry had its beginnings in 1884 when Enrico Bernardi built a tricycle car that ran on petrol fuel. In 1896, the first actual Italian car was produced. Three years later, Giovanni Agnelli and his partners founded Fiat and produced their first model. Italy is now one of the top five automobile manufacturers in the world, and Fiat dominates the industry with over 90 per cent of overall production. The history of Italian car manufacturing reads somewhat like a soap opera, with tales of mergers and acquisitions threatening to deflect attention from the designers. Yet,

despite the rocky financial backdrop, the industry still consistently delivers a range of beautiful and powerful cars.

1. Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo Automobiles was founded on 24th June, 1910 in Milan. Initially named ALFA, the company was an offshoot of Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID), founded in 1906 by Frenchman Alexandre Darracq and some Italian investors. ALFA produced its first car, the 24 HP, in 1910, and a year later entered two cars in the Targa Florio motor racing event which was the beginning of the brand’s long association with motor racing. Alfa Romeo has successfully competed in many different types of

motor racing, including Formula One, Grand Prix motor racing, sports car and touring car racing, and rallies. The company produced its first racing car in 1913, and won the inaugural Grand Prix world championship in 1925. When the Alfa Romeo racing team was privatised, team leader Enzo Ferrari named it Scuderia Ferrari. During the 1960s and 1970s Alfa Romeo produced a number of sports cars, but the brand was sold to the Fiat Group in 1986.

2. Ferrari

Ferrari was founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari under the name Scuderia Ferrari. Initially, it was the racing team for Alfa Romeo, until financial constraints forced Alfa to withdraw their cars in 1933. Ferrari manufactured racing Bahrain Confidential August 2015 73

cars and sponsored drivers before expanding into the road vehicles market in 1947. This move was primarily to fund its racing ventures, especially in Formula One where it was highly successful. The first Ferrari race car was entered in the 1940 Mille Miglia race. Ferrari is the only team to have competed in the Formula One World Championship continuously since it was founded in 1950. In 1973, Ferrari retired from sports car racing to concentrate exclusively on Formula One. With Michael Schumacher on the team, Ferrari dominated Formula One racing from 2000 through 2004. Scuderia Ferrari holds nearly every Formula One record. According to Wikipedia, Ferrari's records include 15 World Drivers Championship titles, 16 World Constructors Championship titles, 209 Grand Prix victories, 4925.27 points, 622 podium finishes, 203 pole positions, and 218 fastest laps in 776 Grands Prix contested. Ferrari entered the road car market in 1947. Two years later, it entered the grand touring market, which still accounts for the majority of Ferrari sales. In 1962 it entered the super car market, and later produced one-off models for wealthy clients.

3. Lamborghini

Automobili Lamborghini was founded in 1963 by manufacturing magnate Ferruccio Lamborghini. A former mechanic during World War II, Lamborghini built a tractor business using leftover military hardware. By 1955, his tractor company was one of Italy's largest farming equipment manufacturers. Finding himself in a position to indulge his passion for luxury cars, Lamborghini began buying Alfa Romeos, Lancias, Maseratis, and Ferarris. He decided to build the perfect grand touring car, and after several years of working with top designers, the Lamborghini 350GTV was unveiled at the 1963 Turin Motor Show. The brand and its creations enjoyed a decade of impressive growth until the 1973 oil crisis which had a devastating effect on its sales. In 1972, Lamborghini had sold his ailing tractor business to a rival company and offloaded 51 per cent of Automobili

4. Fiat

Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) was founded in 1899 by a group of investors which included Giovanni Agnelli. The company grew quickly and 25 years later, dominated the Italian car market. Fiat produces a range of cars including small road cars, sports cars, vans and trucks. It has won the European Car of the Year award twelve times and also has a significant presence overseas. Fiat-based cars are constructed in Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Spain, Serbia, Turkey, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Korea. Fiat has a history of buying up its competitors in the Italian car industry. In 1967, it purchased Autobianchi, and two years later, purchased controlling interests in Ferrari and Lancia. In 1986, Fiat acquired Alfa Romeo and in 1993, Maserati. Consequently, Fiat is now the largest Italian car manufacturer, and the world's sixth largest. Lamborghini, although he continued working at the factory. Then in 1974, he sold his remaining shares and walked away from the company he founded. Despite foreign ownership, Lamborghini continued to employ Italian designers, launching the Silhouette, Jalpa, LM002, Diablo, Murciélago, Gallardo and Reventón. The Lamborghini factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese still produces small runs of its four latest models.

5. Lancia

Lancia Automobiles was founded in 1906 by racing drivers Vincenzo Lancia and Claudio Fogolin. The company has a long history of producing distinctive cars and also performing well at motor rallies. Upon Vincenzo's death in 1937, his wife and son took charge of the company. Lancia became famous for its many innovations in the automobile industry. These include: • the first complete electrical system as standard equipment (in 1913) • the first car body that supported structural load by using the car's exterior, rather than an internal frame or truss (in 1922) • the first independent front suspension (in 1922) • the first 5 speed gearbox fitted to a road car (in 1948) • the first full-production V6 engine • the first V4 engine • the first rear trans-axles Lancia always enjoyed a reputation as a highend luxury car, but because of their stringent manufacturing standards, production was ultimately not cost-effective. In 1969, Fiat purchased the company, but elected to preserve the Lancia brand.

6. Maserati

Maserati was founded in 1914, in Bologna by the Maserati brothers, Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore, and Ernesto. Three of the brothers had built Grand Prix cars for Diatto, and in 1926, they created the first Maserati. One of their early models, driven by Alfieri Maserati, won the 1926 Targa Florio. In 1937, the brothers sold their shares to Adolfo Orsi, although they continued working for the company as engineers. Ten years later, they finally left the company and founded a rival company, OSCA. After 1957, Maserati began focusing on building road cars. In 1968, the French car manufacturer, Citroën, purchased the company. After Citroën went bankrupt in 1974, Italian government funds kept the company afloat. In 1975 Argentinean Alessandro de Tomaso took over the company. Later, Chrysler purchased part of Maserati, and, in 1993, it was sold to Fiat. Fiat eventually relinquished control to Ferrari, also a Fiat-owned company, and Maserati cars regained the popularity they had lost in the intervening years. In 2005 Fiat Auto regained control of Maserati and merged it with Alfa Romeo. Maserati cars performed well at motor racing events in the 1940s and 50s. Maserati won the Indianapolis 500 twice, in 1939 and 1940, the only Italian car manufacturer to achieve this distinction. Racing victories in the 1950s included the world championship in 1957.

opinion

Throughout the spring and summer, seagulls make their homes on the rooftops of Lyme Regis, raising their chicks and teaching them to fly, hunt, and prepare for adulthood. We get to know the families on the roofs around us, watching the young grow bigger each day; just as the adult gulls do, we watch as each chick makes its first flight, safely returning home. “She will change our lives,” I kept telling myself as my wife and I contemplated the commitment of becoming “doggie parents” again; we’d already fallen in love with her. With a little more soul searching and memories of the joy we’d shared with Poppy, we bundled her up and took her home - Daisy became the new addition to our family. Arriving home, we sat on the floor together, she lapped up a bowl of cool homemade yoghurt - we were friends, ready to explore the house and garden together as the adult gulls watched her every move from the safety of the rooftops. As a family, we’d decided that should we have another puppy, we’d be strict from the outset, but as expected puppy eyes push boundaries to the limit. That evening, without hesitation she jumped on the bed and licked my face - not allowed, but with each soft lick she was saying “don’t worry, we’re friends.” She has been living with us for about six weeks now and has settled in well - she is either playing or sleeping as she prepares for the next game. Shoes and most other items have been safely locked in cupboards, and the floor of my office, which used to be a haven of tranquility, is strewn with doggie toys of every imaginable shape and color. This fast growing little soul is very much part of our lives, to have her under my desk, or lying by my feet, as I work is such a pleasure - even if I do have to listen to the sound of toys or bones being chewed in the background. Like Poppy before her, she enjoys her walks in the fields and woods around us - albeit, they are faster paced and more often. Seemingly where ever we go, people stop and talk, commenting upon how gorgeous Daisy is. Watching her trying to round up crows, rabbits, and other dogs, I realise that it’s not just the tranquility of the home that she’s shattered. With time she will be composed, regal, and calm - with an air of playfulness - we hope. Bahrain Confidential’s EXCLUSIVE astrologist Dodi Astra tells you

what to watch out for every month.

VIRGO

AQUARIUS

TAURUS

You find pleasure in being productive, which is why you so rarely allow yourself time off. Work accomplished makes you feel great, but there is a limit to how much you can do before you get exhausted. This month will be about having fun and getting your mind off work for a while.

In the first week, you will have a full moon in Capricorn, 10 degrees, to light your twelfth house of rest, secrets. You may feel an overwhelming need to slow down, and rightly so, for although early last month was fun, the office began to whirl with activity toward the end. You might feel a little frayed on the edges.

You have been waking up every morning telling yourself that you need a break. You have been through a lot and with Saturn back in Scorpio; you are feeling the presence of this taskmaster planet pressing more responsibilities on you. This pressure-filled period will end on September 17 when Saturn will move out of Scorpio.

22 August - 21 September

20 January - 18 February

LIBRA

PISCES

The month starts off with a beautiful coming together of beauty and luxury planet Venus and good fortune Jupiter. This once-a-year event will make everyone, of every sign, happy for different reasons, but you will enjoy this cosmic event more than most, for Venus is your guardian planet.

You have been consumed with career talks and assignments, but now you can slow down and breathe. Apply your talents and work closely with Saturn; by December 2017, the time when Saturn is due to exit Sagittarius - not to return until 2041, decades from now - you will be a force to be reckoned with in your industry.

22 September - 22 October

SCORPIO

23 October - 22 November

As you begin August, you might want to consider taking a vacation. Your horoscope this month is practically screaming, “Take a break!” The month starts off with a juicy full moon in Capricorn 10 degrees, making a short trip in the days leading to the weekend.

SAGITTARIUS 23 November - 21 December

Turn away from other activities to focus on money. The full moon this month will light your second house of personal finances, and so it may find you paying bills, sending deposits, and if self-employed, reminding those clients who still owe you. You may even be studying a financial deal.

CAPRICORN 22 December - 19 January

This month may feel as though it will focus you completely on your partner, but it will be equally as much about you, too. You won’t have to wait long to find out what it is all about, for the full moon will fall in Capricorn 10 degrees, a time when a matter that’s extremely important to you will come to culmination.

102 Bahrain Confidential August 2015

19 February - 20 March

20 April - 20 May

GEMINI 21 May - 21 June

As you open the month, you will be thinking about money in all its forms. A full moon will bring these money matters to fullness within four days of its appearance and be friendly, receiving a strong vibration from Neptune, so the money you may receive would likely be related to your creative efforts.

ARIES

CANCER

In matters of love, the month starts out with a very special cosmic event. Jupiter will embrace Venus on August 1, a sensational vibration, just made for you, for both planets will conjoin in your fifth house of true love. Uranus, the planet of surprise, is perfectly positioned to spin its magic on you.

You have Mars in your sign, putting you front and centre for all that will happen now. You are used to standing on the sidelines to wait for the right moment to act, but that won’t be the case. Finally, you have your moment to call the shots, and others around you will have to follow what you say. Use your power well!

21 March - 19 April

22 June - 22 July

LEO

23 July - 21 August

As the month begins, you will be in the mood to catch your breath and slow down. By taking time to rest and think about your new birthday year ahead, you will ensure a happier, more productive year. A lot of planetary activity will light your solar twelfth house. You may want to change your priorities and set up new goals.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
