INNOVATION IS IN THE DNA Gulf Insider catches up with Yaser Alsharifi, CEO of Bahrain Islamic Bank (BiSB) to find out more about the Sharia-compliant banking system, innovation in the era of AI, and more. client is through collaboration and partnership. Our focus is on being the best at banking services, ensuring the security, confidentiality, and privacy of our customers. We ensure this by building platforms that can connect with other service providers, allowing clients to meet all their needs through us or in partnership with us.

Islamic banking operates under a unique set of principles that differ from traditional banking practices. Can you explain how these principles are applied at Bahrain Islamic Bank?

oes BisB cater to nonMuslim customers and if so, why would a non-Muslim choose your bank?

Being an Islamic bank doesn’t restrict the institution or the customer from dealing with one another. In fact, Islamic banking sets its products and services based on equitable transactions, ensuring the risk/reward dynamics are fair and clear. The governance elements are quite strong and require transactions to be asset-backed. This provides an added sense of safety and security. In today’s world, consumers have the right to select whoever provides the best price and service. BisB meets this need by providing innovative sharia-compliant solutions that enable our customers to achieve their aspirations, with an 6

engaging and fast service. That’s what differentiates BisB as an institution.

You are a recognised leader in the Islamic banking sector. In your opinion, why is this? I believe it’s the DNA of the institution. We started as the first Islamic bank in Bahrain and the third retail Islamic bank in the region. Right from the start, we set the path and that’s embedded in our approach. The institution is driven by innovation, catering to the customer’s needs while being Sharia-compliant. We’re fortunate to have a Sharia Board that’s very experienced and adopts a pragmatic and innovative approach while understanding FinTech and digital services. Today, the best way to serve the

On a macro level, there are certain principles that can be distilled to understand Islamic banking. First, Sharia-compliant banking deals in trading, buying and selling commodities, and prohibits loans with interest, especially compound interest that makes it impossible for the borrower to pay you back over time. The second principle is excessive risk. Transactions cannot be conducted based on uncertainty, such as not knowing the potential outcomes or risks of the transactions. The third principle is that transactions are typically asset-backed. These principles find expression in four broad terms of financial interactions (some of which have derivations). The first is Murabaha – I, as the institution, will facilitate buying the goods and selling it to you at a profit, which you can pay me back over time. The second principle is Musharakah means we partner and share the profit and the risk. The third one is Mudarabah, which means you need something managed, and I have the expertise so, I will manage it on your behalf, and share the profit. Fourth, Ijarah is effectively a lease

contract. I buy a property, lease it to you, and charge you a rent.

Bahrain is positioning itself as a regional hub for fintech innovation; what role is BisB playing in supporting fintech development in the country? The Central Bank of Bahrain, our governing body, has established itself as the leading regulator in the region in

terms of its pragmatic approach to the industry and openness to technology, FinTech, and the new wave of Web 3.0, Crypto and other instruments. BisB prides itself on being an active player in the space, as evidenced by our continued work with the CBB and Fin Hub 973, our collaboration with Startup Bahrain and other accelerators and incubators on the island. We put together programs and support SMEs and startups and work closely with the EDB, the CBB, Bahrain Fintech Bay and others, to help support and empower entrepreneurs, founders and VCs in the region. We were among the early adopters of open banking principles. All of this stems from the view that FinTechs are not a threat if seen as complementing what an institution can offer.

Finally, tell us a bit about the BisB Innovation Lab and how the bank is keeping up with rapidly changing technology, AI trends, and customer demands in the banking industry. BisB set up its Innovation Hub several years ago, encouraging teams within the bank to come up with new concepts, experiment and create solutions that would address the needs of the customer while disruptions in

tech kept happening. My firm belief is that innovation must be embedded within the DNA of the institution across disciplines. So, it’s great to start with a lab where there are a few people involved and experiment. For it to be effective in the long run, you need an institution where the employees have an innovation mindset. And that’s what we’re striving towards. AI is one additional application which will have profound implications for the industry, and we are gearing ourselves up to capitalize on this in service of our customers.

SPLURGE ON YOUR BUSINESS Qreative Design’s Principle Architect and Interior Designer, Mohamed Alqari is a entrepreneur who believes in making bold moves. Read his take on setting up a business, dealing with failures, and delivering unique experiences through his brand.

W

hat was the best ever lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

No matter how big the failure is, it’s going to be followed by a bigger success. Whatever the failure may cost you, whether it’s time, energy, or money, it is an investment in yourself!

What was the greatest challenge you faced while setting up your business? Wearing multiple hats. Being a 9 to 5 employee in a design department, my work was focused on my field. Even though I was exposed to various disciplines, I wasn’t responsible for making decisions that didn’t pertain to my field. For example, accounting, investments, HR, and other parts were all taken care of. Jumping from that to being a solopreneur and making all those decisions by myself was a bit overwhelming.

To date, what has been your proudest moment as the founder of Qreative Design? To be selected as one of the top 20 interior designers by the NYC Journal.

Speaking honestly, what do you consider are the major difficulties in your industry? Design awareness in our region is still developing. Making expensive selections for my projects requires an enormous appreciation for art and design by my clients. I’m blessed with clients who appreciate our world. However, most people in our region do not feel comfortable investing in the look and feel of their homes. Investing in your home will change how you look

at things in general, resulting in how you approach everything outside your home. I guarantee that!

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Patience and making bold moves. If you want to be a successful leader, there’s no space for fear and hesitation. No matter how scared you are, do it anyway! If you fail, it’s a lesson for you moving forward.

Can you describe a difficult business decision you had to make and how did you handle it? I was hiring a celebrity business coach

from New York, Nancy Ganzekaufer who was way above my budget. At the time, I wasn’t making enough money to afford her services. She promised me that hiring her would double my income after a year. I’m proud to say that she quadrupled my income in less than a year and changed my whole business model and client experience.

THE VALUE OF PATIENCE Rashid Zayed Al Zayani, Managing Director of Zayani Motors and Euro Motors talks about navigating challenges during the COVID pandemic, earning a leadership position in the family business, and his love for the automotive industry in his interview with Gulf Insider.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

The key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of understanding different cultures. In our business, we have a predominantly Bahraini workforce, but we also have employees from various nationalities. Dealing with diverse nationalities requires a different approach. It’s crucial to comprehend their backgrounds, and motivations, as each culture has its own unique nuances. This experience has taught me the value of patience and the need to listen and learn from those around me. It’s not about exerting control but rather about mutual understanding and persuasion to arrive at the best decisions. By taking a calculated and pragmatic approach, we can foster an environment where employees feel valued and empowered to share their opinions.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced in your business? One of the biggest challenges I faced was taking over the motors business during the Covid pandemic. This was particularly difficult because a significant portion of the brands we dealt with were from China. China imposed strict restrictions, leading to delivery stops and delays for both cars and parts. Managing customer expectations and aligning them with the actual situation of the manufacturers was a constant struggle. It’s worth noting that MG, the top-selling Chinese brand, was also affected by these challenges. 12

challenge now lies in the highly competitive market. There are numerous excellent products available, and while I firmly believe that our products are top-notch, we must acknowledge the presence of strong competition.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Leaders need to approach their surroundings with a level of maturity, taking into account the different cultures and backgrounds of their staff. It’s crucial for them to have a comprehensive understanding of the business landscape while also having clarity about their own goals and aspirations. Setting proper KPIs and targets is essential for effective leadership. Additionally, decision-making plays a pivotal role. It’s important to make prompt decisions and avoid opportunity costs while maximizing productivity. Furthermore, ambition is a key attribute for leaders. They should have a genuine passion for what they do and continuously strive for greatness, not settling for the status quo.

Can you describe a difficult business decision you had to make and how did you handle it?

To date, what has been your proudest moment as a business leader? In my family business, I didn’t automatically receive a directorship role just because my father co-owns the company with his brothers. I had to go through a three-year assessment period as a manager. As the marketing manager for BMW, I had to prove to the board that I was deserving of a seat on the board and a directorship position. Gaining the trust of my uncles, cousins, and especially my father was a significant achievement and my proudest moment. It meant that I was entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing both the companies.

Speaking honestly, what do you consider are the major difficulties in your industry? Fortunately, we have resolved the stock issue, so that is no longer a concern. However, our biggest

It’s a passion that runs deep within me, as I have a genuine love for cars. It’s important to work on something you truly love. As a company, we’ve introduced prestigious brands to this part of the world. We were the first importers of Rolls Royce in the region. Challenges are a part of running any business and we try to overcome them.

One of the most significant decisions we faced was during the COVID-19 pandemic when we had to downsize our workforce. It was undeniably difficult to let people go from their jobs and go a step back. Until then, we had been focused on a constantly progressing target. However, we had to adapt and reassess our strategy. Overcoming this challenging situation required patience and perseverance. We continued to set targets and work towards them, albeit at a slower pace, while patiently waiting for the market to recover. Eventually, as the market started to pick up, we resumed full operations. We were able to rehire some of our talented employees who had been let go. Unfortunately, not everyone could be brought back, despite their skills and contributions.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? I believe in keeping my intentions pure and trusting God’s plan.

One of the most important lessons in leadership for me is the importance of leading by example. Effective leaders don’t just tell their team members what to do; they show them through their own actions and behaviours. I believe if I set a positive example, it creates a strong foundation for trust and respect within the team. It also inspires and motivates team members to follow suit and perform at their best. Leading by example involves demonstrating the values, work ethic, and commitment that I expect from my team. To me, it means being accountable for my actions, admitting mistakes when they happen, and constantly striving for self-improvement.

The COVID-19 Pandemic was the harshest test we had faced – operationally, financially, technologically and personally. Working from home was considered a luxury and then it turned into a necessity. Thankfully, our systems proved to be more prepared than us for this transition. What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Effective leadership requires a combination of qualities and skills. As leadership is a complex and multifaceted role, leaders often combine different attributes with their unique personalities, experiences, and industry-specific knowledge to excel in their roles. I believe some key qualities and skills that most successful leaders should possess to thrive are vision, communication, empathy, resilience, delegation, motivation, time management, and team building.

What do you most love about working in your industry and what do you most dislike about it? I have the most wonderful opportunity to work with the future professionals and business leaders of Bahrain. I love the opportunity to nurture them at the beginning of their careers; help them learn the ABCs of a working life and find their strengths. I always believe that Invita is like a gardener’s nursery bed, where young seedlings find their roots and start growing up before they move on to the bigger garden. It’s always a moment of pride for me, when I run into an alumnus of Invita at a ministry, bank, or business, to learn how they have been progressing; especially when others have good things to say about them. What I would like to see changed in my industry, is the attitude towards the industry. We cannot compare ourselves with a financial institution, a government organization or an industrial complex. The most difficult business decision for any business leader is one that would cause a setback to others. For me, it was the decision to wind up a project, an idea with the potential to change the industry. However, it could not survive the pandemic. I found it hard to bring myself to make this announcement to the project team and most of all to explain what it meant for them. We tried our best to help as many as possible to find other opportunities, but in the end, it was not enough.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? I believe in “Carpe Diem”. It’s a Latin phrase that translates to “Seize the Day.” This motto encourages me to make the most of the present moment and not to postpone important actions or decisions. It reminds me that time is limited, and opportunities may be fleeting, so it’s essential to live life to the fullest and pursue our goals and dreams. It’s a reminder to stay motivated, take risks, and embrace the opportunities that come their way. It encourages me to keep a proactive and positive approach to life.

SUCCESSFUL LEADERS BUILD STRONG TEAMS Dr Manfred Bräunl, CEO of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE discusses leadership and innovation in the automotive industry.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

Leadership can be seen as a book with many dynamic lessons, but these lessons change over time with a changing environment. Having said that, there is not the ‘best’ lesson, but perhaps one that will never change, and for me it’s this: Give yourself time to listen carefully before you make any important decisions.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced as the CEO of Porsche Middle East? In my opinion, challenges are often created by abrupt changes, that you didn’t anticipate, or have much time to prepare for. These changes or challenges can happen either in your current role – whether it’s a crisis in the industry, or a change in your career, particularly if that change includes additional challenges to face, like a new location, culture or language, or all three! The biggest challenge I’ve probably encountered so far was my move 5 years ago from being the Vice President of Marketing at Porsche China to becoming the CEO of a regional office that is responsible for 17 countries across the Middle East, Africa and India. Nevertheless, if you are passionate about your job, challenges are the best way to learn and grow quickly.

To date, what has been your proudest moment leading Porsche Middle East? I really had to think hard for an answer here and I would like to replace “proudest” with “most memorable”. 20

more empowering and motivates you to master the situation. I think that the biggest challenge in today’s automotive industry is to ensure a smooth transition from the technology of combustion engines to electric engines. It marks the most significant change since I entered the industry 30 years ago.

What do you most love about working in your industry and what do you most dislike about it? I love the products I am working with, which improve year by year with so many innovations, just as much as the personal contact with our business partners who are selling these products to our customers. Porsche has a strong history and legacy, paired with iconic products. The people working for this

brand are a strong community who all carry the same passion. I can’t really say what I dislike about our industry, I even love the competition we face from other brands, Porsche has always been a competitive brand, on and off the race track.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Looking at the variety of successful

leaders, they all have different qualities that have made them who they are today. Very often, it is the right mix of qualities that have made them successful. But the foundation for success is always the same: successful leaders build strong teams. This is why people and team management is probably the most important skill a successful leader can have.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Never postpone and never take “No” for an answer!

POWERING A CLEAN FUTURE Khaled Chebaro, Country Director for Bahrain and KSA, Yellow Door Energy shares his insights on leading the cause for clean energy and striving to achieve Bahrain’s vision for net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

W

hat are the most important leadership qualities for someone who wants to succeed in the solar sector?

I’ve been in the solar sector for more than a decade. From my experience both as a team member and as a team leader, certain qualities for success include great communication skills, strong emotional intelligence, confidence (but not arrogance), passion and most importantly, patience. At Yellow Door Energy, we provide solar power purchase agreements (PPA’s) for businesses and transaction sizes can range from $500,000 to $30 million. As a result, contract negotiations take time and a strong leader needs to be patient, persistent and communicative. Emotional intelligence is also required so that the leader can understand the customer and identify business challenges while uncovering the underlying energy needs. Lastly, confidence comes from having knowledge about the industry, our own solutions and market challenges. While my engineering and management education gives me a great start, it does not replace my years of experience listening to customers and supporting them through their energy challenges.

What was the greatest challenge you’ve faced working in the solar industry? The solar industry is dependent on regulations. As an industry, we have progressed significantly in terms of price reductions and increased efficiency. Constant technological advancements continue to accelerate the renewable energy transition overall. 24

However, we are dependent on regulations for permits to install ongrid solar PV systems and we may occasionally compete with heavily subsidized electricity costs. These pose challenges and can deter some businesses from switching to clean energy. To date, we have been fortunate that the solar-related regulations in Bahrain are clear and straightforward. As such, developers like us can follow the process and install solar power plants through our PPA’s.

I am the first employee of Yellow Door Energy, having joined the company since its inception in 2015. Today, we have over 200 megawatts of solar projects in the region and more than 150 employees. Parallely, my family grew from a 2-person household to a 4-person household. There have been many proud moments during my tenure at Yellow Door Energy, both in the office and on-site at our solar plants. Perhaps the proudest moment was when I attended the commissioning ceremony of our company’s first solar project: Unilever Personal Care Factory in Dubai, UAE. I was in the audience when their former CEO, Paul Polman, inaugurated the new factory and did a tour of the 1-megawatt solar plant, provided through our PPA. Today, I still get the same rush whenever I visit completed solar plants and see that customers are proud and happy with their decision to switch to clean energy, having chosen us as their sustainable energy partner.

What in your opinion are the potentials for the solar energy industry in Bahrain? The solar energy industry in Bahrain is evolving rapidly, fueled by the Kingdom’s progressive regulations and the ambitious target of becoming Net Zero by 2060. The abundant sunshine and climatic conditions also make it a prime location for harnessing solar energy. Bahrain has also cultivated a pool of local talent, from engineers and financiers to managers, who are not only advancing the Kingdom’s renewable energy goals but also

26

Gulf Insider October - November 2023

have the potential to become global ambassadors for solar energy solutions.

How does Yellow Door Energy contribute to Bahrain’s pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2060? In Bahrain, our customers are Mondelez, Imerys Al Zayani, Armacell, Bahrain City Centre, and the Bahrain Mall, operated by Carrefour Bahrain, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim. We’re especially proud that our project at the Bahrain Mall won the 2023 Renewable Energy Award at the Smart Cities Summit in Bahrain. Awards aside, our projects in Bahrain have generated 12.1 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity as of September 30, 2023, equivalent to removing 8,500 metric tons of carbon emissions from the atmosphere. This modest number will rise exponentially as we sign on new customers and commission our projects throughout the Kingdom.

Given the dynamic nature of the renewable energy industry, which spans various sectors and new technologies, how can one successfully enter and grow in this field? Jobs in the renewable energy sector rose by nearly 8% to 13.2 million between 2021 and 2022, according to a recent report by IRENA. There are numerous opportunities for employment in the renewable energy sector. I would encourage interested job seekers to widen their search beyond engineering or technical roles. In fact, within our company, we have many functions to ensure the success of a solar project. You can look into functions such as business development, marketing, finance, legal, risk, accounting, and many more! To enter the field, I recommend having a strong interest in renewable energy (of course!), possessing an outstanding work ethic, and having the ability to adapt and be agile. The industry continues to evolve, utilizing new technologies and applications. Therefore, it is important to understand that change is a big part of our industry so be open to this.

LEADING WITH COMPASSION As Director of Dadabhai Travel, Adnan Gilitwala believes that making tough calls, delivering the best travel solutions, and being open to a world of ideas are hallmarks of successful leadership.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

The best lesson in leadership I’ve learned is to never stop learning and growing. Opportunities will naturally come to those who continue to better themselves and the other members of their organisation.

What do you most love about working in your industry and what do you most dislike about it? What I love the most about working in our industry is the continuously evolving nature of it. I frequently get to meet people from all over the world working in the sector or in complementary industries with new ideas, products, and views that help us enhance what we offer and how we offer it. I also love being able to provide people with the best possible solutions for their travel requirements as that helps me learn more about people and the industry. What I dislike about the industry is the immense pressure that comes from the day-to-day trials and tribulations we go through while trying to make everything work smoothly. Most people have no idea what occurs behind the scenes.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? In my opinion, leaders need to be very emotionally balanced. They need to be firm but compassionate, and ambitious but also cautious. Good leaders need to inspire people to display the same qualities as 28

themselves and empower them to reach their full potential. In order to thrive, a good leader needs to be able to delegate responsibility effectively and trust his decisions, especially when it comes to the people they choose to associate with and bring into their organisation.

What I love the most about working in our industry is the continuously evolving nature of it. Can you describe a difficult business decision you had to make and how did you handle it? The toughest business decision I had to make was to suspend or exit certain projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. While these projects had huge potential for growth and returns, they were too resource-intensive. At the time, every resource was precious as we had no idea what was going to happen. It is always a tough call to take but, a good leader is someone who is able to make tough decisions and hope that one day we will be able to revisit those ideas and projects when the time is right.

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION

Dr Hamid Haqparwar, Managing Director of BMW Middle East shares the need for leaders to embrace innovation and technologies that can make a positive difference in the world.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

My golden rule is to lead by example. You should always lead from the front and actively engage with your team. This approach has been the cornerstone of my leadership journey. It means not just giving directions, but rolling up your sleeves and sincerely demonstrating the values you wish to instill in your team.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced in your business? The automotive industry has faced many challenges throughout my career. Building resilient leadership during such shifts requires a calm demeanour and operational excellence. One of our most significant challenges is staying ahead in a rapidly evolving market. Technological advances, changing consumer preferences, and global economic shifts all require agility to adapt to. Navigating through these challenges while maintaining the brand’s legacy and ensuring customer satisfaction requires to be balanced delicately.

To date, what has been your proudest moment in the business? Undoubtedly, one of the proudest moments in my career at BMW Group Middle East was the launch of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Pilot Fleet. It marked a significant milestone in our pursuit of sustainable mobility solutions and commitment to addressing

BMW Group, we have a clear path to becoming the most sustainable car manufacturer in the world. However, this is a task for the industry and societies at large. We need to rely on innovation and an open technology approach to tackle this.

What do you most love about working in your industry, and what do you most dislike about it? The entrenched culture of innovation in this industry and the opportunity

environmental challenges head-on, particularly in our region. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is powered by a cutting-edge hydrogen fuel cell system that produces zero emissions during operation, with the only byproduct being pure water vapour. Hydrogen fuel cell technology offers the advantages of rapid refuelling and an extended driving range, making it a promising solution for the future of clean transportation. It’s a testament to our commitment to innovation and our willingness to embrace new technologies that can make a positive difference in the world and align perfectly with our global efforts to combat climate change.

Speaking honestly, what do you consider are the major difficulties in your industry? The automotive industry is always in a state of flux and faces several challenges. But the biggest challenge ahead of us all is to transition towards sustainable mobility successfully. At

to shape the future of transportation. We are in a time of immense transformation, with the potential to revolutionise how people move and the environmental impact of mobility. The ability to introduce cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices that make a positive difference in the world is an incredibly rewarding one. On the flip side, the industry’s fast pace and continuous change can be challenging and highly competitive. Constant adaptation and the ability to pivot at the right time are the only keys to success here. Nevertheless, these challenges are also opportunities for growth and to make a positive impact.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Leading by example, staying calm under pressure, adaptability, strategic thinking, innovation, and having a global perspective are all hallmarks of an effective leader. It’s important for a leader to demonstrate the values

and work ethic they expect from their team. They must be able to foster a resilient and level-headed mindset within the team while navigating the rapidly changing landscape in the sector and regional market. It’s crucial for the leader to implement creative decisions that drive the business forward and embrace new technologies and practices.

Can you describe a difficult business decision you had to make and how did you handle it? A major challenge to bringing hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles into the regional market is the lack of a comprehensive hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Additionally, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have become popular and gained market traction in recent years, leading to a higher adoption rate compared to fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Without a comprehensive network of filling stations, customers may hesitate to adopt hydrogen FCEVs but we nevertheless made the decision to roll out our pilot fleet of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the physical manifestation of our commitment to sustainable mobility. Hydrogen mobility presents several opportunities for the region, not least that it provides a clean and efficient energy carrier, allowing for the storage and transport of renewable energy, which is crucial for achieving climate goals. So, the end result is set to be a win-win even if it was a difficult business decision to make at the start. The Middle East is perfectly poised to lead the global green hydrogen market, thanks to abundant renewable resources, geographical advantages, and significant investment in infrastructure. Another promising sign is the initiative by Paris-based fund manager Hy24, which is building a multi-million-euro fund aimed at investing in the hydrogen supply chain, including in the MENA region. The UAE’s own ambitious goal of achieving hydrogen production of 1.4 million tonnes annually by 2031 – increasing to 15 million tonnes every year by 2050 – was another encouraging factor.

CREATING VALUE

AND FOSTERING GROWTH Dr Faisal Kanoo is the Deputy Chairman of ARKEDU and the Managing Director of The K Hotel. Read his take on navigating challenges and succeeding as a business leader in this interview.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

Witnessing the formidable impact of a team under the guidance of a capable leader is truly awe-inspiring. Harnessing the combined power of individuals who are in sync, well-coordinated, and completely focused on the task at hand is an extraordinary experience. The potential of such a team is limitless, akin to moving mountains. It underscores the incredible feats we can achieve when unity and leadership merge seamlessly.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced as a business leader? Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be an unprecedented challenge. However, I’m happy to see our collective resilience as we conquered those obstacles and adeptly adjusted to the new reality we live in.

To date, what has been your proudest moment leading your various businesses? My proudest moments come from witnessing the thriving success of my businesses, creating value and fostering growth for every stakeholder involved - be it shareholders, employees, customers, or suppliers. It’s gratifying to see the positive impact spreading across the entire ecosystem.

Speaking honestly, what do you consider are the major difficulties about the 34

particular industry you’re in? In my opinion, there are no difficulties. All that exists are opportunities to grow and develop.

What do you most love about working in your industry and what do you most dislike about it? I enjoy the satisfaction of creating something meaningful from scratch. However, I am dissatisfied with how the line between work and personal life becomes blurred due to the nature of the industry.

What according to you, are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? Integrity, transparency,

communication, and empathy are, in my opinion, key skills every leader should hone to succeed.

Has there been a difficult decision you’ve had to make as a business leader? Personally, the most difficult decision for me is when I have to take corrective action in response to a business relationship not going as expected and lacking positivity.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength.” Marcus Aurelius

ACCELERATING POTENTIAL Richard Leopold, Regional Director of Bentley for the UK, Middle East, Africa and India highlights the need for a leader to inspire and support the team’s growth while ensuring their complete participation in the vision-building process.

W

hat was the best-ever lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

I’d say never underestimate the importance of establishing a clear team vision and common purpose. Many companies have a corporate vision and often this can be too far removed for those further down in the organisation. Ask your team, “What is our role in delivering on the company’s ambitions?” Set a team vision together and then agree on the values and behaviours that you all believe are required to deliver it. By involving the team, their ownership, engagement and subsequently motivation increase dramatically. In my experience, this creates a strong foundation for a high-performance team.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced in business? It has to be managing the supply and demand situation at Bentley during Covid. My role at the time was to forecast the sales demand and recommend supply adjustments at the factory in Crewe. When the pandemic hit China, it wasn’t too hard to estimate the potential impact of a sales stop, but when the virus spread across the world, it was really challenging to assess how things could develop. The only way I could really handle the conversations with our Board was to create scenarios… best/mid/worst case, gather as many facts as possible and discuss probabilities. Whilst initially quite stressful, I really enjoyed leading the team through this volatile period and

was very proud of how quickly we were able to adapt our plans and accelerate our decision-making.

To date, what has been your proudest moment in the business? I’d probably refer to an assignment I had in China during 2011-13. At this time, the car market was booming and we could see the luxury segment about to follow. We did an assessment of

our goal. Every Friday for 12 consecutive weeks we opened a new retailer across the vast territory. Bentley was firmly on the map and sales soared. Naturally, I feel proud looking back at this chapter.

Speaking honestly, what do you consider are the major difficulties in your industry? Bentley operates in the luxury market. By definition, nobody needs luxury. Therefore, maintaining customer interest in our products and driving the brand’s emotional appeal are our biggest challenges. Our job is to innovate. Fortunately, at Bentley, we are blessed with a very capable “bespoking” division called Mulliner. Here we are able to make customer dreams a reality through a whole range of individualization options on the exterior and interior aspects of our cars.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? I’d say that the main role of a leader is to inspire and support their team to achieve their full potential. You don’t need to be the expert, but you do need to ask the right questions and be inquisitive. Show belief in your team and in turn their confidence will increase. The results then follow.

What was a difficult business decision you had to make and how did you handle it?

our representation and soon realised that we needed to double the size of our retail network. Typically, the appointment of a new retailer would take 3 months to run through the process – from appointment, through showroom build to opening. To secure our market potential, our aim was to do 12 appointments in 12 cities within 3 months. When I called our Headquarters in the UK, the guys thought we were crazy! Nevertheless, we didn’t falter in our desire to deliver the project. We assigned a team of 350 to build the showroom interiors offsite, appointed 5 marketing event teams and achieved

The toughest decision is the one around reducing headcount. I’ve been in this situation a couple of times due to business criticality and it’s never pleasant. The key is to communicate clearly, be fair in the process and take the time to talk through the necessary changes with the involved parties.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? Believe in yourself. The rest will follow.

FOSTERING COLLECTIVE GROWTH Mateo Ramos, Chief Executive Officer, Foodvest Holding believes that seeing the invisible enables one to do the impossible. He dives into what shaped him as a leader, the power of collective action, and taking ownership of an F&B organisation and its brands’ success in this interview.

W

hat was the best ever lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

During my late 20s, as I sought guidance, I delved into various books, and one that left a profound impact on me was John Maxwell’s “21 Laws of Leadership.” The very first law, known as the “Law of the Lid,” made a lasting impression. This principle emphasises that the overall performance of an organisation, business, or relationship is tied to the capabilities of its leader. This concept carries immense significance as it underscores the importance of humility. It serves as a constant reminder that as a leader, one must continually enhance their own skills, nurture character development, focus on skill refinement, and prioritise leadership growth. This commitment is paramount, for without personal growth and development, it remains impossible to elevate the lid of an organisation, subsequently limiting its potential.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced so far in the business? The most significant challenge in my business journey was the early realisation that effective leadership is not about personal achievements or what you can do but empowering and inspiring others. Shifting from individual success to fostering a culture of empowerment marked a pivotal moment. Adopting collective growth and motivating the team became the key focus, guiding me through various challenges and strengthening my approach to leadership.

To date, what has been your proudest moment as the CEO of Foodvest Holding? My proudest moment has been the privilege of collaborating with individuals over several years, being able to work with them hand in hand, and witnessing them grow and eventually establish their own successful businesses. This achievement reflects the power of mentorship, shared experiences, and the fostering of talent and ambition. It underscores the profound impact

qualities and skills. Four essential attributes of thriving leaders that I see are empathy, vision, a people-first orientation, and humility. Empathy involves understanding and caring for team members’ feelings and needs, fostering trust and relationships. Visionary leaders provide a clear, inspiring direction, motivating their teams towards common objectives, especially during challenges. By prioritising people, leaders create a supportive work environment, focusing on well-being, growth, and development. Humility is often an underestimated quality, it involves acknowledging limitations, seeking feedback, and fostering a collaborative atmosphere. Thriving leaders embody a blend of these qualities and skills, allowing them not only to succeed personally but also to inspire and guide their teams toward enduring success.

The primary challenge in the food and beverage industry is cultivating a culture of leadership that can keep pace with the industry’s rapid growth. This involves identifying and developing leaders within the organisation, promoting a sense of ownership among all employees, adapting leadership approaches to the diverse roles in the industry, and being agile and capable of making quick decisions in a dynamic environment.

While facing challenging business decisions that may compromise longterm brand value for short-term gains, my approach involves steadfastly adhering to core values and a commitment to long-term brand equity and innovation. I prioritise maintaining the brand’s reputation and authenticity over immediate profits, choosing to ensure our brand remains trusted and innovative in the long run.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? I strongly believe in two guiding principles. Firstly, “If it is to be, it is up to me,” emphasising your accountability for achieving success, both personally and within your organisation. Secondly, “Only those who can see the invisible can do the impossible,” highlighting the importance of nurturing ambitious and visionary dreams. MAKING A SOCIETAL DIFFERENCE THROUGH DIGITAL SOLUTIONS

Christian Rasmussen, CEO and Executive Director of Beyon Connect highlights the digital impact on quality of life, the milestones of the company, and enriching local talent with global expertise in this interview.

W

hat is your vision for Beyon Connect?

When we started Beyon Connect, it was clear that we were creating something that would work in the region. We aimed to bring in standards and best practices from around the world to digitise societies, governments, and businesses. The scope, however, is much broader than we imagined. These digital solutions are sought after beyond the region. Their purpose is to uplift society; for instance, the OneID product is a national digital identity tool which helps government, banks, and other authorities communicate with citizens, no matter where they’re located within a territory. The vision is to make these technologies accessible to everyone so that no one is left behind due to complexity or technological barriers.

Since Beyon Connect got off the ground, we’ve aimed big and strategic, with Bahrain spotlighting our products. What are some of the major milestones Beyon Connect has achieved? Since Beyon Connect got off the ground, we’ve aimed big and strategic, 42

with Bahrain spotlighting our products. At the same time, there was a growing demand for products around the world. Our first real partnership kicked off over a year ago with Egypt Post and Ministry of ICT, putting all our offerings in Egypt first, then expanding to sub-Saharan Africa. As of now, we are in close dialogue with a number of sub-Saharan countries and ready to give them access to our platforms through our joint venture with Egypt. Earlier this year we teamed up with partners in Singapore and New Zealand.

What are some of the challenges you face as a company? Formalising deals can be a long game, sometimes taking over a year to finalise. Additionally, there’s a lot of pressure to meet high expectations, deliver quality, and ensure products mature and become viable. While we strive to find the right blend of skills as we continue to build Beyon Connect’s portfolio, we take this as an opportunity to support the development of talented young Bahrainis. There are strong education and youth development programmes available in Bahrain and we’re working closely with them to attract and onboard the right talents for us. It’s also important to create the right environment for development and we support this by bringing in experienced local and international talents. This way, we can contribute to the career development of our young Bahraini team members and help them to reach their full potential.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive?

Being constantly alert and juggling multiple responsibilities is part of being a leader.

This move expands our reach to seven countries, reaching 700 million people. We’re set to launch our services in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Macau. Another of our recent successes is with OneID in Bahrain, and we’re excited about collaborating with government entities and businesses here in Bahrain with plans in place to implement Beyon Connect’s OneID technology for a number of organisations. By bringing in our services, we can lift people to a higher quality of life, irrespective of the demographics.

Understanding and respecting different cultures, promoting equal opportunities and rights, empowering teams, building trust, and effective communication are all essential factors in our work. Sometimes, that means making tough calls, like saying no or letting team members go. Other times, we realise we’ve made a wrong decision and need to pivot. Such experiences, while painful, are valuable lessons for the future. Being constantly alert and juggling multiple responsibilities is part of being a leader. If you’re too comfortable, you risk slowing down and not evolving.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “Fear not this pain because someday it will make you stronger.”

The sale made news worldwide and it was a very proud moment for BJC to have a sale of such calibre. Another proud moment is the opening of mono boutiques throughout the Kingdom. We have managed to open boutiques such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Graff, Roberto Coin, Grand Seiko, and Tag Heuer, to name a few. Opening such boutiques shows the magnitude of the BJC brand, not only in Bahrain but in the Middle East as well.

What can visitors expect from this year’s Jewellery Arabia? The lineup we have at Jewellery Arabia this year is beyond incredible. different brands have different cultures and we learned to adapt to the culture of each company in order to gain their trust and respect.

How does BJC continue to stay relevant with changing times and new trends in the industry? It is quite essential to stay relevant with the changing times and new trends as they are ever-evolving. It

expanding, improving, and revamping, with new and larger boutiques continuously in the pipeline. We are currently renovating our Aali Mall store which will hopefully open in November. It will have luxurious interiors that will encompass everything from high-end jewellery and watches to homeware and gifting. BJC has become eponymous with luxury goods and we can proudly say we are the hub for splendour in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

What were some of the earliest learning experiences during the inception of BJC? Some of the earliest learning experiences during the inception of BJC were to have patience and be humble with the surroundings. Approaching brands can require some effort and negotiation. We had to understand 46

is imperative to keep up and always be on the lookout for our customers’ preferences as what is current and in demand today may change the next. Of course, we have anchor companies that have been with us for many years and they will always remain, however, at the end of the day it is crucial to keep diversifying and embracing the new.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? I believe a leader should have several key qualities and skills in order to thrive, however, I will mention the ones that I personally feel are the most crucial. First and foremost, a good leader should have effective communication skills. Through good communication skills, a leader is able to gain trust, inspire

positive outcomes, and push towards achieving goals. That being said, a leader must be charismatic and have a positive attitude. In addition, like any business, challenges and hurdles are inevitable. A leader must be a problem solver and also be able to delegate the necessary tasks to the right people in order to overcome any adversity.

Speaking honestly, what are some of the opportunities and challenges in your industry? Since the inception of BJC, our main focus continues to be to offer excellent customer service, having an immense and updated collection of watches and jewellery, and of course a phenomenal after-care service. We have had the incredible opportunity to obtain the most advanced state-of-the-art equipment and technology to be able to meet our clients’ expectations in repairs and aftercare. We have ensured that our staff is knowledgeable with the most up-to-date information about each brand and the craftsmanship that accompanies their products and are trained with the highest level of skill to provide these services. At BJC we are proud to have had the opportunity to build our very own stand-alone service centre located at Moda Mall. The current challenge in the industry is tapping into the younger generation since their style and tastes are different to those of the past. We have to cater to their needs in order to stay relevant.

Is there a particular saying or motto that guides you? “When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” – Henry Ford This quote is particularly important to me as it’s easy to glide through when things are going smoothly, but whenever you are faced with challenges, you need an uplifting reminder. It’s true that ‘the only way out is through’, and it’s only on the other side where you can see the magic happen.

TAKING PRIDE IN ONE’S TEAM Kjetil Urheim, General Manager, Jotun Dubai describes the need for taking an interest in the team’s growth, being accountable for environmental sustainability, and leading with compassion in this interview with Gulf Insider.

W

hat was the best lesson in leadership you’ve learned?

Everyone should be given the freedom to do their job better. If I as a leader can inspire or motivate a team member to aim higher, by unleashing the inner energy and drive that we all possess, then I have done my job; be it through praise and positive feedback, through correcting fatal flaws, or by removing obstacles in our internal processes.

What was the greatest challenge you have faced in your business? The last two years proved to be the toughest time and a time of exponential growth for us as a team and as individuals. We were dealing with a shortage of raw materials and peaked prices, potentially hurting our customers’ business as well as our reputation and profitability. To understand and analyse the situation, come up with solutions, and above all, change people’s thinking, enabling them to handle the situation with both suppliers and customers (who again had to push it to their customers) was a challenging process. We had to dig deep into ourselves and our mindset and relook at the value proposition we at Jotun give our suppliers and customers. We really needed to understand what makes us different and to believe in ourselves a lot more. This has been a time of tremendous learning and growth for us all.

48

Gulf Insider October - November 2023

Business Leaders

To date, what has been your proudest moment while leading Jotun? I have proud moments almost every day when I get to see and hear about how the team is succeeding and when they share their efforts and achievements with me. On a grander scale, I’d like to mention two proud moments; the first was when we were awarded four stars in the UAE Taqdeer Award for our work

methods. There is an urgent need for authorities within the business community and society to set minimum acceptable standards that ensure our well-being and environmental sustainability. This alignment would accelerate innovation and development and lead to a greener future.

What do you most love about working in your industry and what do you most dislike about it? What I like the most is the change we are able to bring to our customers, their assets and spaces, whether it’s the upgrade of a neglected oil refinery, the fuel and CO2-saving antifouling on a supertanker, or the new, long-lasting look on a beautiful villa - all these visual testaments to the quality of our paints drive us to aim for bigger projects and reaching out to new customers.

What according to you are the key qualities or skills that every leader should possess in order to thrive? THE PERFECT FIT The story of Hilton Bespoke

I

n 1970, Joseph Francis D’Souza, an ambitious young tailor, established Hilton Tailors in Manama, Bahrain. With a focus on men’s tailoring, the business quickly became synonymous with superior quality and craftsmanship on the island. In 2011, George Joseph D’Souza, following in his father’s footsteps, founded Hilton Bespoke, carrying forward the legacy of top-notch clothing and catering to a diverse clientele that includes business professionals, bankers, CEOs, and managers, among others. George expanded the customisation options to reach a wider customer base, combining his father’s expertise and his own pattern-cutting skills honed under a Savile Row master in Ireland. The shop first opened its doors in Zinj, followed by a new branch in the Diplomatic Area, both offering a range of tailor-made designs. Creating bespoke garments means providing adequate choice to the customer to add his style to the clothing. It’s about designing a piece from a blank canvas. The craft involves creating a pattern that’s designed specifically for each individual. George proudly states, “We leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of excellence, whether it’s using imported inner canvas from Italy, buttons sourced from the heart of Italy, threads from Germany, or high-quality lining materials.” What sets Hilton Bespoke apart in the Bahrain market is the wide range of brands it offers. With labels like Loro Piana, Zegna, Cerruti, Reda, Dormeuil, and Scabal in their catalogue, customers appreciate the discerning elements of quality and craftsmanship. One of their greatest challenges is effectively conveying the exceptional

quality of their craftsmanship and what makes Hilton Bespoke stand out from other tailoring businesses. However, the business firmly believes that consistently delivering top-notch quality at competitive prices is the most effective form of advertising. Creating a suit for a special occasion requires meticulous attention to detail, a quality ingrained in the Hilton Bespoke team. They stay up-to-date with the latest fashion trends, source the finest fabrics, and participate in textile fairs worldwide to ensure each piece is tailored to perfection. George expresses joy when satisfied clients share their exceptional experiences with friends and family. “It not only fills us with happiness but also strengthens our commitment to delivering exceptional service and suits tailored to the style and tastes of our customers,” he says.

Education

WHEN IS THE RIGHT AGE TO START YOUR CHILD’S SCHOOL JOURNEY? John Maguire, Executive Headmaster of the British School of Bahrain highlights the importance of beginning the learning journey early in this article. “Creativity is the key to success in the future, and primary education is where teachers can nurture creativity in children”.

T

he question of when to start education is one grappled with by governments across the globe, and in every country, you will hear a different answer to this question. For parents, it is such a big milestone and a decision that is not taken lightly, this variation between countries only further confuses and conflicts an already difficult decision. So where can we search for the answer? Every four years, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) runs an international assessment of each country’s education programme called PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment). This test measures a 15-yearold’s ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge to meet real-life challenges. The tests are conducted in each country that elects to take part in PISA. Interestingly, Bahrain, alongside other GCC countries, has recently elected to take part in the next assessment cycle. Following these tests, OECD produces an in-depth analysis of spatial variations between countries and a famous (or infamous) PISA global league table. The publication of this league table always creates much discussion and debate among educationists and governments around all matters of issues, including the starting age of students enrolling in education. One of the lasting shadows cast by

62

Education

the global pandemic is the impact of education on the youngest students. Of course, very young students did not access online learning as effectively as their older peers. Even within the regionally renowned schools, which offered the best online provisions available, there was a noticeable difference between the engagement of 3-year-olds and 16-year-olds. Now that education has returned to normal in most countries worldwide, the number of students aged below 6 has surprisingly not yet returned to prepandemic levels. Should this concern us as a society, are we creating an educational problem for later, and should it concern parents who have

Our education is based on creating experiences as well as nurturing excellence in the classroom.

elected to not start education as early as the pre-pandemic generation did? OECD conducted research in 2019 into the longer-term impact of school attendance on children of Nursery and Reception age. They measured how these formative years established these children later in life and their academic proficiencies at the age of fifteen. By measuring attainment at age fifteen, they could correlate achievement with those students who had attended enriching early years of education. The

results of this research were released in January 2020 and showed that quality Nursery and Reception education makes a statistically significant difference to student attainment in the longer term; the key findings in this research emphasised the importance of the highest quality early years learning, as opposed to simpler childcare, such as at home nannies, to enable this positive effect. So, when is the right age to start education? Of course, the response from schools such as the British School of Bahrain would be that students should join as early as possible and immerse themselves into a rich and stimulating learning environment that nurtures creativity and passion among our other values. However, there is more to education than just the formal learning that occurs in a classroom. Children develop through experiences that shape their characters, sow the seeds of moral values and begin to form them as individuals. During the pandemic, due to lockdowns and social restrictions, many of these experiences were denied to students, and now post-pandemic, while academic progress can be restored, it will take much longer for experiences to be replicated, and through these experiences, students enabled to catch up socially and emotionally. Making connections and relationships, through enquiry-based learning, is at the centre of a great school’s Early Years approach – once a child starts thinking for themselves, they keep thinking for themselves, and this feeds directly into better literacy and numeracy; our creative and exploratory pedagogies in Early Years prepare children to maximise learning as they move up into the rigorous teacher guided curriculum. Furthermore, our education is based on creating experiences as well as nurturing excellence in the classroom. To conclude, this debate will always continue, and following the next PISA league tables, it will be rekindled once more. What is clear is that an early years education that creates experiences significantly benefits students now and later on in life.

A NEW BENCHMARK FOR ELECTRIC LUXURY

Charlie Cooksey travels to Lisbon, Portugal, to drive the all-new BMW 5 Series.

Gulf Insider October - November 2023

Automotive

T BMW claim that the 5 Series perfectly combines the comfort of a 7 Series with the sportiness of a 3 Series.

he new fully electric BMW 5 Series is a landmark car for the German automaker, representing its first fully electric offering in the midsize luxury sedan segment. The i5, as it is known, is based on the latest 5 Series platform and offers a similar level of performance, luxury, and technology, but with the added benefit of zero emissions. I’m pretty well acquainted with EVs by now. With BMW alone, I’ve driven almost the entirety of their electric range, including the iX, i4, i7, and now the i5 in different corners of the planet, on different roads - from Florida to the French Riviera and Palm Springs, California. Being among the first in the world to drive this car meant heading to Lisbon, Portugal. BMW obviously likes to showcase their new models in this beautiful part of Europe and I’ve been lucky to visit here before for other BMW events in 2018 and 2019, for the 3 Series and 7 & 8 Series launches respectively. It’s a sign of the times that BMW decided to lead the global launch of the 5 Series with the electric version, a clear statement of their focus on

progressing as an EV market leader. BMW claim that the 5 Series perfectly combines the comfort of a 7 Series with the sportiness of a 3 Series. Overall, it’s a sleek and stylish sedan that looks both sporty and sophisticated. This is the 8th generation of the 5 Series. Rich in history, it was interesting to watch a nostalgic compilation of video archives of each generation dating back to 1972. First impressions upon seeing the car – it’s a good-looking piece of kit. There’s certainly been a refresh on the overall look and style, but nothing quite as drastic as I saw with the new 7 Series last year. BMW’s strategy for their electrified range differs from most other brands – the electric version of their products is almost identical to the ICE (internal combustion engine) version and shares much of its design with the petrolpowered 5 Series, but there are a few key differences. The grille is now closed off, and the front bumper has been redesigned to improve aerodynamics. There are also blue accents throughout the car to signify its electric nature. BMW’s designers have worked wonders on the interior. Minimalist, Gulf Insider October - November 2023

comfortable, totally practical and looks the business. There’s lots of space and functional compartments, a large wireless charging pad for two devices, a big padded armrest, clean designed centre console with a crystal gear selector, an infotainment system controller, driving mode haptic buttons, a massive 14.9-inch central touch screen with Apple carplay and android auto, and digital dash display. The air conditioning controls are now on the touchscreen, rather than having separate physical buttons and dials. This can be a bit cumbersome to use while driving. The cabin is spacious, with high-quality materials and finishes throughout. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom. Oh, and the i5 comes as standard with a completely vegan interior. Yup, BMW calls it “Veganza upholstery”. Had I not been told that I would have just assumed it was genuine leather. Some of the i5’s most desirable features, such as the Harman Kardon sound system and the panoramic sunroof, are optional, so be sure to factor in the cost of these options when budgeting for your purchase. So, how does it drive? I found it a lot of fun, while refined, as I was hurtling 68

Gulf Insider October - November 2023

Overall, this is an impressive car that offers the performance and luxury of a BMW 5 Series, with the added benefit of zero emissions. around the coastal roads and bends outside of Lisbon. Also, the i5 comes standard with all-wheel drive, which gives excellent traction. On the first day, I drove the entrylevel i5 eDrive40 which will do 0-100 in an impressive 5.7 seconds with 335 horsepower. On the second day, I had the i5 M60 which is basically the i5 on steroids. It has a more muscular and aggressive look with a blacked-out grille that lights up. It looks seriously cool, especially lit up in the dark. There are also sportier seats and all the usual M trimmings including logo placement around the vehicle, badges, stitching, and special colours.

This i5 M60 will launch you 0-100 with 593bhp in just 3.8 seconds, putting you not far from Italian supercar territory. There is a “boost” shift paddle on the wheel, which triggers maximum acceleration and provides a spaceshiplike noise. I had a tremendous experience and a lot of fun in Portugal with the new 5 Series. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – for me personally, I’ve gone from having no interest in EVs to developing a real appreciation the more I drive them. BMW is taking EVs seriously and are without a doubt knocking out amongst the best in the market, but for sure, they’re coming with a larger price tag. Prices for the new 5 Series in Bahrain start from BHD 31,000 for the petrol version and starting from BHD 40,000 for the electric version. Overall, this is an impressive car that offers the performance and luxury of a BMW 5 Series, with the added benefit of zero emissions. The new 5 Series is an important car for BMW and a chance for them to remain a leader of luxury sedans in a highly competitive market.

I and other journalists were given a tour of the center, which serves as a hub for cuttingedge research and development.

“Under our new leadership structure, we have the setup to make the next step in industry agility and customercentricity across the EMEA region. This transformation empowers our local operations, enabling the teams to navigate the competitive landscape and deliver unmatched value to our customers, partners, distributors, and other stakeholders,” said Giuseppe Pedretti, Regional Managing Director EMEA. PETRONAS Lubricants also launched its new NEV Fluids Business Unit to support the research, development, and marketing of lubricant solutions specifically designed for the electric vehicle (EV) market. It will be led by James Mark, former EMEA Marketing Director, who said: “We’re in an exciting era of the automotive industry as we see more types of cars on the road than before, all with different needs and performance requirements. I am excited to lead our research and development teams to engineer the EV fluid solutions for tomorrow, today. I look forward to growing PLI’s NEV Business to become a key global player in this segment.” Alessandro Orsini, Head of Group Marketing and Group Customer Excellence at PLI, added: “PETRONAS Lubricants International’s target is to be a top player in the EV Fluids Solutions Industry, and this team will be the

catalyst to accelerate us towards this ambition. James’ experience will be crucial to effectively accelerate the company’s offering for a sustainable mobility future and be a relevant NEV Fluid player globally.” After the press conference I and other journalists were given a tour of the center, which serves as a hub for cutting-edge research and development. I witnessed teams of skilled specialists, scientists, and engineers developing next-generation lubricants designed to enhance performance while minimizing environmental impact. They are also pioneering alternative fuel technologies, and exploring innovative approaches to reduce emissions for a greener environment. Such a focus on research and development of new technologies to improve the efficiency and environmental performance of the oil and gas sector is clearly one of the key reasons that Petronas is an industry leader. I had never appreciated all the science and technology that goes into the development of modern engine oils until I took this press trip. In fact, it’s something I had never given any serious thought to. Now, I feel a certain reverence for what goes into the manufacture of such lubricants, and I consider them as nothing less than advanced engineering in liquid form. ast month I had the opportunity to road test the new PEUGEOT 408, a stylish crossover, during a media drive in Oman. The new 408 has a striking exterior design, with a long, sleek silhouette and a fastback roofline. The front is dominated by a large grille with sharp LED headlights, and there’s a full-width LED taillight bar and a dual exhaust system at the rear. Overall, the 408 is a handsome car. Inside, the cabin is spacious and fitted with high-quality materials. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s plenty of room for passengers in the back. The cargo area is quite spacious, and the rear seats fold down flat to provide more space if needed. The 408 is available with a variety of powertrains. I had the opportunity to test drive the turbocharged four-cylinder and was impressed. It’s quick and agile. There’s a variety of technology features including a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and a panoramic sunroof. The car also

offers a variety of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. It’s earned a five-star overall safety rating and comes standard with a variety of safety features. This is a fun car to drive. My journey was a round trip between Muscat and Dar Al Akbar, which is two thousand meters up in the mountains. I experienced some of the most stunning scenery in Oman, and I was navigating winding mountain roads with sharp inclines and declines, plus a few sharp bends. Yet, my journey throughout was comfortable thanks to the 408’s excellent suspension and supportive seats. Overall, the 2023 PEUGEOT 408 is a great car. HOT TIMES IN THE ‘PICCOLO’ V12 Gulf Insider’s Charlie Cooksey drives the Ferrari 296 GTS in Dubai.

The difference between the GTB and GTS, by the way, is simply that the B means Berlinetta while the S means Spider.

’m no stranger to Ferrari’s 296GTS and GTB. I am fortunate to have driven this wildly powerful hybrid supercar on many occasions in Bahrain, including on the track. Recently, I was invited to fly down to Dubai by Ferrari Middle East to spend a weekend of thrills and luxury experiencing the 296GTS and GTB on the roads of the UAE. Despite having driven the 296 in Bahrain several times, driving a car with that much power on Bahrain’s roads

about this because I personally feel like everything is better in a drop-top. The 296 is a mid-engine, plug-in hybrid sports car that was unveiled in April 2021. It is the first plug-in hybrid Ferrari to go into production, and it is also the first Ferrari to feature a V6 engine since the Dino 246 GTS of the 1970s. It’s powered by a 2.9L twinturbocharged V6 engine and an electric motor. The combined output of the two powertrains is 819 horsepower

feels somewhat comparable to say the world’s strongest man working out in a basic 3-star hotel gym – so much unusable potential! In the UAE it’s a different story, with much more road and unchartered territory. And, with all Dubai’s glitz and glamour, Ferrari’s just seem to look better there. The difference between the GTB and GTS, by the way, is simply that the B means Berlinetta while the S means Spider, and the Spider is a convertible while the Berlinetta is not. The plan was to have the 296 GTS one day, and the GTB the other. But plans changed and I instead had the 296 GTS over both days. I was happy

and 546 lb-ft of torque. This allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 2.9 seconds and from 0 to 320 kph in 7.3 seconds. Despite its impressive performance, the 296 is relatively fuel-efficient. It can also travel up to 24 kilometres on electric power alone. In addition to its performance and efficiency, the 296 GTS is a beautiful car. It has a sleek and aerodynamic design that is both elegant and aggressive. The interior is also wellappointed, with high-quality materials and finishes throughout. Despite Ferrari’s regularly coming up with new names for their vehicles, there’s a method, albeit irregular, to

their numbering. For example, the 296 is named for its 2.9 litre V6 engine while the 812 Superfast, for example, is named using a different criteria which is for its 800 horsepower V12 (and yes, it’s super-fast). The continuous mechanical and technological improvements Ferrari make to their cars are beyond impressive. To think, the 296’s ‘little’ engine (which Ferrari call a Piccolo V12) kicks out more horsepower than the 812’s V12! Insane! This is all down to Ferrari’s clever hybrid technology. So how is the car? Well, if you’ve followed me or my publications over the last year, you’ll know I’m a raving fan of the prancing horse’s plug-in hybrid baby from Maranello. Roof up or down, the GTS feels grounded, stiff and controlled when driving. It’s a supercar by every metric yet so comfortable, smooth and refined to drive. Shifting through the gears up or down, handling and braking were so incredibly well refined and responsive. It’s a very easy car to drive and an incredible piece of engineering. The car sounds marvellous thanks to clever engineering and tuning. When it roars it gets a lot of attention. I took the 296 to an open and remote location where I could test the launch control. I switched off the traction

control, flicked on race mode, thrashed the throttle and I was ‘off to the races’. The 296 will launch you to 100 km/hr in just 2.9 seconds. Wild. I perhaps pushed the drop-top fun a little far – despite being scorching hot I took a 2-hour spin around Dubai with the roof down the whole time. It left my face with a strong touch of red. You don’t feel the heat so much when driving at speed, but you sure do when you have to stop at lights or are in slowmoving traffic. The roof is beautifully designed and retracts in a smooth 14 seconds, and this can be done whilst driving at slow speeds – so no need to stop. There is a fully electric mode which I tested a couple of times, but let’s be honest, that’s not the most exciting thing about the car. Verdict; this is one of my favourite Ferraris that I have driven to date. It’s a real driver’s car – stylish, highly refined, and ultra-sexy. Would I call it a daily driver? Personally; no. I’d get uncomfortable climbing in and out of it, but compared to other Ferrari’s it’s one of the most comfortable – even in the stiffest ‘Race Mode’ chassis setting.

MCLAREN IN THE MOTHERLAND! Gulf Insider’s Charlie Cooksey tours the McLaren Technology Center before taking the GT out for a spin around the roads of West Sussex.

I

am no stranger to McLaren. My first memory of the brand was when my father bought me a Guinness World Records book, I was perhaps around 6 or 7 years old, and we were going through it together and learned that the McLaren F1 was listed for breaking a top speed record. Fast forward a decade and a half, and I did my first McLaren factory tour in 2016 with my father. Fast forward a few more years from that - 2019, and I was actually driving a McLaren for the first time; the 570s in Bahrain. Since then, I’ve driven many of the British supercar brands’ models including the GT and 720s Spider. Last month, I was back in the UK and met up with a good friend, Shayan Rahimi, who happens to be an Executive Board Member of the largest supercar club in the Middle East, SuperCarsMajlis. He loves McLaren. So, I arranged a private guided tour of MTC (McLaren Technology Centre) for us. Our tour guide, Amy Woodhouse, was a superstar. There wasn’t anything she didn’t know about the brand or its history. Her passion for McLaren was infectious. The building that houses MTC is an engineering and architectural marvel – outside and in. Driving past the beautiful lake surrounded by greenery to the building’s entrance is iconic. So, what did we see within this high-tech and spotlessly clean supercar factory? Well, we saw historic iconic cars from one of the most successful Formula 1 teams ever. We witnessed the largest trophy collection I have ever seen. We learned about the history of

McLaren’s innovative technological advancements over the years. And, the best bit – we observed McLaren’s supersecret no-phones-allowed production and assembly line. Following our personalised MTC tour I was asked if I’d like to take a McLaren GT for a couple of days to test drive. What a question - I said “yes please”. The GT is roomier, more practical,

The seats are comfortable and supportive, even on long drives. There is plenty of legroom and headroom for even the tallest occupants. The trunk is also surprisingly spacious, able to accommodate up to 14.8 cubic feet of luggage. I had to cart about a bit of luggage and the GT managed to hold everything - a medium-sized suitcase, extra bags, shopping, and so on. This

and more refined than its 720S sibling. There’s a good amount of ground clearance (when the nose is lifted). Driving supercars in the UK can be stressful, but this relieved those stresses. I realised that the GCC roads seem more “purpose-built” for such cars. The McLaren GT has a mid-engine twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that produces 612 horsepower, 465 pound-feet of torque, and like every other McLaren has incredibly precise handling. The interior is a masterclass in minimalist design. The focus is on the driver, with all of the controls and gauges positioned within easy reach. The materials are top-notch, with leather, Alcantara, and carbon fibre used throughout.

compared favourably to my experience in Dubai last year with the 720s, where I had to store my luggage in the front seat! One of the most striking features of the interior is the panoramic roof. It lets in plenty of natural light and makes the cabin feel airy and spacious. Overall, the McLaren GT is a truly special car. The interior of the McLaren GT is a luxurious and comfortable place to be, and it is the perfect blend of performance and refinement. It most certainly stood out in my hometown of Horsham, West Sussex. You rarely see supercars in that part of the world unlike the GCC.

aving recently received a life-changing diagnosis of stage 3 lymphedema that’s currently incurable but manageable, I’m now actively running down the road to wellness. Since receiving the test results I’ve been working hard on my fitness; the toll of daily hospital visits, lymph system treatments and four hours a day in a specialised machine had me dreaming of a perfect paradise of peace—Marhaba Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som!

Arabic & Islamic Medicine (TAIM) with a holistic bespoke health and well-being approach. My initial assessment began before I even arrived in the 280,000 square metres of luxurious beauty that was to be my home for five days. The Zulal team took great care, with gentle guidance, to help me understand my wellness goals and it was clear that my focus had to be on reconnecting with myself and on mindfulness for long-lasting lifestyle impact whilst also having specialised treatments for my condition. Set around a beautifully tranquil circle planted with herbs used not only by the apothecary but also by the magician chefs in the kitchen, Zulal offers two distinctly different yet interconnecting experiences. Zulal Discovery is a unique concept for families wishing to spend meaningful time together, take a

digital detox and reconnect in a healthy environment whereas Zulal Serenity is tailored for adult guests only for a total mind and body reset. Stepping out of Zulal’s luxury limousine after just over an hour’s drive from Hamad International Airport and knowing nothing of the Northern Quarter of Qatar I am genuinely stunned at how beautiful it is. Arriving at Zulal I immediately sense I’m somewhere spectacular and special. An instant calm washed over me and my energy was becalmed to its surroundings, soothing my soul. Little did I know then just how transformative this stay would be. A welcome tea ceremony greeted me in the spectacular House of Wisdom that houses a staggering array of books. With over 200 teas curated by Zulal’s very own in-house Tea Master I settled for a cup of chamomile whilst refreshing myself with a cold towel. My wonderful

McLaren’s CEO Michael Leiters expresses scepticism, stating that electric vehicle technology isn’t yet primed for supercars. Leiters said, “I don’t expect this technology [EV] to be ready for real supercars before the end of the decade.” He stressed, “Weight is super important, you need also the right range.” From McLaren’s new showroom in Dubai, Leiters highlighted that heavy cars aren’t nimble around turns and go against “the core of our brand.” In other words, even the most advanced battery systems for EVs aren’t ready for real supercars – maybe not until 2030.
