Love Issue

No, we’re not the love experts. But, here at AW, we want to celebrate with the world the beauty of love. It may be overrated, even highly commercialised, yet just the same, we believe that the month of February – otherwise known as Love Month – is worth its shout. So forgive our mushy, cheesy theme but we hope you’ll get the exciting feeling of flipping through each and every page of this issue. We have started the magazine with loads of ideas perfect for you and your loved ones. Our fashion and luxury pages will definitely fill you with amazing stuff to crave for. Take more time reading through our exclusive interviews in the Beauty Section – especially the one with the Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively, who stepped into Dubai for a one-night shebang with her beloved fans. Meanwhile, our profile feature provides a glimpse at the successful people who pursued their passions. One of which was the designer behind our Cover Girl’s beautiful fashion – Zayan Ghandour, the co-founder of the popular multi-brand shop s*uce. Her journey from journalism to fashion design and retail entrepreneurship is utterly inspiring.

Little Red Dress

Looking for the perfect knockout outfit? Well, we say, look no farther than Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2014 ensemble. Shown on the runway, this dress is an awesome re-imagination of the fashion’s little red dress. Indeed an utter stunner in bloody red palette, it is also embellished with huge artsy belt in gold, and paired with equally tasteful and artful stilettos. Gorgeous and elegant, this is surely going to win everybody’s hearts. 10

Want a Harry? Harry Winston, jeweller to the stars, is synonymous with rare jewels, exquisitely cut diamonds and the ultimate in luxury. In 1932, this unique, American brand opened its doors in New York. Today, you can find a La Marquise Harry Winston Wristwatch from Harry Winston’s exclusive ‘La Marquise’ high jewellery limited editions at online designer store, The Luxury Closet. This remarkable timepiece is encrusted with baguette, round and marquise cut diamonds, all of VVS clarity and E-G colour, weighing a reassuring 58.69ct. The stunning ladies’ watch has a quartz movement, a wrist size of 17cm and a case size of 32mm. The unusual hidden case and one-of-a-kind bracelet also complement the three-dimensional feel of this masterpiece. With an original price tag of AED7,933,000, this particular watch is available for AED2,900,000 at The Luxury Closet, and comes with its original box and Gems Card. Seize this amazing opportunity to dazzle; as watchmaker Harry Winston once said, ‘People will stare. Make it worth their while!’

Horse Power Paying homage to the Chinese ‘Year of the Horse’, Boucheron brings forth its equestrian-inspired treasures. The majestic seahorse, famous in Greek mythology as the half horse/half fish creature that pulled Poseidon’s chariot, has a dignity and intelligence that imbues the Crazy Jungle Seahorse timepiece. The overall effect created by this watch is of an underwater calm and serenity where the refined beauty of one of the ocean’s most unique creatures transmits its tranquil grace through the talents of Boucheron’s master artisans. Framing the seascape of the rose gold watch is a bezel covered in 48 brilliant cut white diamonds. The heritage of Boucheron is apparent along the side of the 42mm watch, where the House’s iconic Pointes de Diamant motif subtly identifies the timepiece as a Boucheron creation. On the back of the watch the distinctive elliptical display window allows watch connoisseurs to catch a glimpse of the GP 4000 movement with its customised rotor in the form of Boucheron’s historic poinçon. The Crazy Jungle Seahorse comes in two incarnations: one with a diamond bezel and an abundance of coral, the other with more soberly stylised seashore and a more refined elegance.

Dazzling stacks This season, the classic selection of white, yellow and rose gold, is encrusted with a small diamond that adds a spark of light and preciousness, cradled in a carved squared niche. With signature engraved logo, the Bulgari-Bulgari stackable rings show off the charismatic style embedded in Bulgari’s exclusive and time-honoured jewellery tradition – paving to renewing its appeal with fashionable élan while treasuring the signature codes that have characterised the iconic assortment for nearly two decades. The rings are available in stores across the UAE – Mall of the Emirates, The Dubai Mall, Boulevard at Jumeirah Emirates Towers, The Avenue at Etihad Towers, and The Galleria at Al Maryah Island. Each ring retails at AED7,500.

The Bentley Bar The capital is indeed getting lucky these days. We’re quite envious of its newest spot perfect not only for eating but also socialising – the Bentley Bistro & Bar has launched in Abu Dhabi’s Al Maryah island, in The Galleria. The casual yet elegant restaurant serves a menu of French-inspired haute comfort food from breakfast through to the small hours, while the open kitchen and lively bar provide twin focal points within the bright and spacious room. The breakfast menu includes French classics such as omelette with comté, as well as international favourites including blueberry pancakes with beef bacon and maple syrup. From noon until close, the all-day menu features authentic lighter dishes – French onion soup, smoked salmon quiche, and steak sandwich, to name a few – alongside heartier fare such as, Moroccan-spiced grilled spatchcock with saffron potatoes, and ox cheek and beef bacon pie. Comfort-food favourites are reimagined – as well as classic burgers, options such as a rib meat burger and the chicken sausage and duck confit hot dog create a more refined, yet approachable gourmet menu. To end the dining experience, desserts include traditional tarte tatin, fruit fritters with chocolate fondue, and white chocolate and passionfruit mousse

Colours of Spring Tangy pinks, delicate blues and crisp greens sing the praises of young ladies. Well, that’s how Guerlain speaks about its newest Spring makeup collection. Amazing springtime muses, the collection promises a cloud of coloured powder beads with a sweet violet scent that illuminates the complexion and whisper bursts of laughter. This time, Guerlain presents Météorites Blossom, a spring fable, a story of light, a dream in full colour. Météorites Pearls, the legendary powder, reinvent themselves in a colourful whirlwind. These magicians reveal invisible light to bathe the skin in the purest glow. Their knowing partners? Two limited editions to get your hands on as quickly as you can. Météorites Bubble is an adorable blush, so round, delicate and deliciously tangy. For magical shine, Maxi Shine and Colour Lacquer turn into stardust. Poetry in colour, this spring dream sees life through rosecoloured glasses. Vibrant fuchsia and piquant pink, two new Rouge Automatique shades, and luminous rosewood for Maxi Shine and Colour Lacquer, which also primps itself in smart pink. To conclude this tale, an ode to the eyes, which become sublime and open wide, ready to see it all. In a limited edition, Ecrin 4 Couleurs dresses up in a new, delicately pastel wardrobe. Ecrin 2 Couleurs offers a new deliciously sassy harmony. Maxi Lash mascara gets mischievous and goes naturally brunette. Finally, the Eyebrow Kit adorns and structures all eyes.

Fashion’s Wordplay

Fashion sees a rebirth of making a statement. This time, McQ makes it quite loud by putting itself right affront. With its newest collection of fabulous shirts, it does not shy in putting forth its oversized logo. And since the Spring/Summer 2014 is welcoming such a wordplay trend, we just love how stylish and comfy these shirts look.

Temperature Rising Dior is a Perfume House in which tradition blends with revolutionary visions. Fahrenheit is a universe nourished from birth on a succession of shocks. Its origins lie along a path strewn with fruitful conflicts and creative eruptions. The first of these was aesthetic; the creation of Fahrenheit was originally inspired by two paintings designed by the American artist James Rosenquist – ‘Fahrenheit 1982’ and ‘Brighter than the sun’. Upon its creation in 1988, Fahrenheit reflected the force of this pictorial inspiration in its olfactory composition, a composition that played on an element of rupture, owing to a floral accord audaciously combined with leather and wood. There was also an element of a powerful and mysterious note, which appeared by chance. It is said that a cask of perfume abandoned in a courtyard in the open air and in the sunlight, suddenly gave off an extraordinary, surprising emanation. Its power and beauty were immediately acknowledged, and it is this note, that was analysed and reproduced. The signature of Fahrenheit was born. Its bottle too was the result of an unexpected adventure; its famous blended shades of red were obtained when the glass cooled unexpectedly. It was the combination of all of these signs that truly emphasises the mystery and richness of the original Fahrenheit.

Bryan Boy x Furla Fashionistas and it-girls who love street-style took a treat from Furla as the brand flew in famous blogger Bryan Boy who is the House’s exclusive personal shopper. In his visit, Boy lent his style advice to Candy Pop Up store guests, assisting them to choose the perfect Furla bag of the season. Continuing the successful trend of Candy Pop Up Stores opening all over the world – Corso Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, Bloomingdale’s in New York, Printemps in Paris and Gum in Moscow – the exclusive concept pop up space finally arrived in the UAE in Dubai Mall. Dubai is a particularly important location for Furla, not only because of its status as a favourite holiday destination but also because it is one of the 14 ‘big ones’ in the world of fashion and luxury making up today’s Silk Route, the focus of the brand’s retail development strategy. The Candy Pop Up Store displayed the Spring/Summer 2014 collection and a limited edition of the iconic bag in four exclusive colour variations. Not just a must-have accessory, and in addition to boasting a great fashion content, the Candy Bag is also an iconic, cross-cutting style that has come to stand for a true philosophy of pure creativity and an allround lifestyle.

All about Cs

Coco Chanel considered beauty as a way of life. For the sake of practicality, a product had to have many different qualities to preserve and maintain the beauty of skin complexion. Today, CHANEL continues to apply this vision, with the formulation of a skincare product with multiple functions. The result of two creative sources, science and makeup, the CC CREAM illustrates the values of the House that are simplicity, elegance, comfort, and attention to detail. A new skincare category initiated by CHANEL, the CC CREAM is the perfect beauty product for the modern woman. Simple and easy to use, it provides a Complete (C) Correction (C) care for the complexion. The CC CREAM unites two expertises created by CHANEL Research, bearing the signature of the Creative Makeup Studio. The secret to its exceptional performance is simple: it combines the benefits of complete skincare with long-lasting makeup, for perfect results and a natural finish. Upon application, it works its magic. Within moments, the skin glows with natural beauty. The complexion is visibly even-toned and radiant, fresh and flawless. With a delicate scent, the soft, sheer, velvety texture is truly surprising. Both rich and light, it provides maximum comfort and longlasting coverage, for a natural-looking finish. The skin is dressed to perfection. Neither too much nor too little. Fresh, smooth, in a word, elegant.

Fitting for Summer

Freshness and prints are the essential ingredients for the CH Carolina Herrera Children’s collection for next summer. Sailor stripes, polka dots and flowers take center stage, while light forms and an easy style come to life through fresh fabrics such as cotton and linen. The collection offers a selection of versatile garments that respect the adventurous spirit of children: loose-fitting dresses, ever-present Bermuda shorts and polo shirts. Red, blue and yellow form part of the color palette.

What’s not to love?

There’s no denying that this year’s Spring/ Summer collection of Moschino Baby Kid Teen is giving us goosebumps – in a very good way, we say. The lovable collection is highlighted by its inspiration of a happy, carefree little girl immersing from shabby-chic atmosphere. The collection sees a huge liking for large or small blooms, embroidered or denim or appearing as all-over or placement prints. Also present is the hint of romanticism with pastel shades and clothes made of light materials - organza and macramé – such as the petal-skirt dress (Moschino Kid) and the tiered dress (Moschino Teen). We’re in love! 23

Loewe’s Acid

Madrid-based leather master, Loewe, hits the shelves early this year with another intricate and quality handbag collection. Since its foundation in 1846, Loewe has been the brightest star in the world of luxury leatherwear, thanks to unrivalled technical skill and high-quality materials. Inspired by the brightly coloured plumage of one of its most iconic symbols, the peacock, the House boasts its new capsule collection, Acid. To showcase Loewe’s skill in the art of leather dyeing, two of the brand’s most famous bags, the Amazona, recently revisited by Junya Watanabe, and the Duna, are receiving a Technicolour make-over, complete with gold hardware. The two styles are available in both large and small sizes in a range of colours including blue, yellow, green and magenta. The collection will also include a wallet and a pouch, to bring you the best in bright accessories.

Vancouver Bag Channeling the innate beauty of the Canadian coastal city it’s named after, the new signature Dsquared² handbag is one savvy style-maker. Looking the part whatever the setting, a Vancouver handbag turns heads as it boards a private helicopter headed for an idyllic isle. Put over the shoulder of a tailored jacket, it’s equally ready to impress in the boardroom. And when the sun sets at the hottest cocktail bar in town, a Vancouver in the perfect summery shade of coral steals the show. The Vancouver channels a feminine chic vibe that has inspired her style, striking an elegant note paired with her cinched waist full skirts and shapely tailoring. With its ultra structured shape and polished gold chain and closure, the Vancouver reveals key Dsquared² style details. A belt is looped under the handbag’s shoulder straps, just like a pair of jeans or belted dress. Inspired by its twin designers Dan and Dean Caten, the interior structure is mirrored, two halves with zipped tops replete with two pockets for handheld devices – one bearing the name Dan, the other Dean. The Vancouver’s medium or large sizes are crafted from impeccable quality, hammered calf leathers in classic hues of beige, black, blue, coral, dark brown and optic white. Sophisticated with the right amount of seductive edge, the Vancouver adds fabulousness to every one of her looks.

The ZINZIN Denim Project Fashion supports eco-forward philosophy

Yoga Jeans:

The no ordinary gift

Most of the time, fashion is seen as frivolous. But not when it sets out to help the environment. From its recycled wood walls and floors, and changing rooms fashioned from recycled cardboard tubes, ZINZIN helps make a style-forward social contribution to the eco-cause. To further in its cause of helping the environment, the independent non-mass fashion destination sets its eyes into transforming scrap denim into fabulous fashion. The ZINZIN Denim Project was announced during its participation in the recently held Market OTB (Outside the Box), a Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) event organised as the first-ever sustainable fashion and lifestyle market in the region. Joining the Market OTB, ZINZIN stamped its support of the use of refurbished shipping container to house its new collections of non-mass produced fashion brands. Now, stepping further outside the ordinary, ZINZIN calls on fashion students from reputable universities to turn the denim pieces and use their design capability to create a new fashion piece – tops, bottoms or full dresses – from these used denim materials. The best items will be displayed and

sold at the ZINZIN outlet at the Mercato Mall in Jumeirah Beach Road. Meanwhile, 100% of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to the ‘Give A Ghaf’ tree planting program. Each piece will be sold at a base rate of AED500, but due to the immense interest that the project has already generated amongst ZINZIN’s clientele, the sale is likely to turn into an auction. A Ghaf tree will be named after the participant whose entry garners the highest bid. Spearheaded by Goumbook, the ‘Give A Ghaf’ initiative aims at promoting the conservation of the Wild Ghaf, a drought-tolerant evergreen tree indigenous to the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The Ghaf is considered as one of the region’s most beloved natural treasures and was declared the UAE national tree a few years ago.

Ever tried to keep count of how many times you’ve complained about lack of movement in tight jeans? No matter the price point, the pairs were made to be sturdy, not ultra-comfy. That’s a fact of life, the price we all have to pay to be fashionable. Well, it was. Second Denim’s ultra comfortable Second Yoga jeans, launching at ZINZIN at Mercato Mall, redefines the perceived limitations of wearing denim. Offering the same flexibility of yoga pants with the sturdiness of conventional denim, Second Yoga jeans are as comfortable as they sound. They are able to combine these two essential elements by using top quality denim fibre made of 97% brushed cotton and 3% elasthane, allowing them to hug every curve of the body in any position. Yoga jeans also use denim with 92% shape memory, as opposed to the industry standard of 64%. Coming in regular, low and extra low cuts with flared, straight and skinny styles, Second Yoga jeans are perfect for everyday wear, transitioning effortlessly from a busy work day to a relaxed ladies’ night out. Their comfy chic style also makes them a much better wardrobe choice for air travel than velour tracksuits. The collection of Second Yoga jeans is available at ZINZIN, Mercato Mall in Dubai.

Men of Fragrance

Sweet smell of success Just like clothes, perfumes play an important role in bringing a whole look together, even for men. Truly gone are the days when only women fuss about perfumes. The men’s olfactory industry is steadily booming and we speak to two men who are at the forefront of this new era.

Sheikh Majed AI-Sabah, Founder of The Fragrance Kitchen Tell us a bit about yourself I am the creator and nose for The Fragrance Kitchen (TFK), which was heavily inspired by my ‘East meets West’ philosophy. I opened the first TFK retail store and flagship boutique in May 2012 at AI Hamra Luxury Centre in Kuwait and launched the brand in the UAE exclusively at Bloomingdale’s-Dubai in 2013. Although I am best known for my roots in fashion retail, my passion for perfume prompted me to hone my talents as a creator of fine fragrances.

How did you get into perfumery? It has been my passion ever since childhood as I was brought up by my grandmother who was a perfumer. She taught me how to mix oils from the souk and source precious ingredients from India. To this day, her influence reflects in my fragrances, and I had adapted her talent of blending. What is the main difference between men’s and women’s perfume? Or has that line been blurred now? I only believe in unisex perfumes. Have men always been into perfumes or do you see a growing market for men’s perfume? Why do you think that is? I can say that fragrances have always been popular among the people in Kuwait and in the region. What are some of the lesser known facts about men’s perfume, or perfume in general? I would say the most important fact about fragrance is that it needs to be kept cool and out of direct sunlight and heat. How should men go about choosing the

26

right perfume for them? Trust your gut feeling when it comes to choosing your fragrance and do not take any advise from others in terms of what suits you best. The best fragrances are always the ones that make you feel good when wearing them Can you roughly share the different types of fragrances will suit which type of men? For the different characteristics, I would say go for something spicy for business, for the athlete, opt for something citrus. For the bold and adventurous type, woody fragrances are best and for those who are young, or young at heart, go for a scent that is fresh. What are the common mistakes men make when using perfume? Keeping the perfume bottle in the car! Which is most important when choosing the right perfume: occasion, season, or personal taste? Why? When choosing the right perfume, I believe that the only thing that should influence your selection is your mood. In order to choose the best perfume that suits you, it is best to be in a good mood! When you create a fragrance, do you have a certain kind of man in mind or do you produce one with the general male population in mind? When it comes to my process for developing a fragrance, I generally just go with my emotions and feelings. What is the next trend in men’s fragrance? Scented shoe soles! That’s my mother’s new invention!

Men of Fragrance

Abdulla Ajmal, General Manager of Ajmal Perfume Tell us a bit about yourself I was born in India but moved to Dubai in 1988. I joined Ajmal perfumes in 1996 as assistant Manager in the Sales and Marketing department. We as a family firmly believe that to be able to sit at the top you must work your way through the departments, thoroughly understand the business. That is why after 15 years in the business I was rewarded with the position of General Manager – Sales and Marketing, the position I currently hold.

Have men always been into perfumes or do you see a growing market for men’s perfume? Why do you think that is? It is a growing trend in the west where more and more men are becoming aware of fragrances and accepting them as part of their lifestyle. In this part of the world, it is already incorporated into lifestyle and features as a need rather than a want. It is an extension of your personality, seldom will you find men with a flavor emanating from them.

How did you get into perfumery? It was the easiest choice to make! Being a family business, I always knew that this is what I would be doing as a grown up. I think it is the best possible route to take as with all family businesses, you learn about the business as you are growing up through discussions between your family members. You kearn more at every step and I think it becomes that much easier for you to grasp and gain footing that much early on. After that it’s a constant battle to gain knowledge and grow through merit alone.

What are some of the lesser known facts about men’s perfume, or perfume in general? All fragrances are created as a concentrated perfume oil, diluted and then sold at either cologne, eau de toilettes or eau de parfum. The difference with us is that we focus equally on the concentrated form and sell that as a branded product as well.

What is the main difference between men’s and women’s perfume? Or has that line been blurred now? In international perfumery, the line is definitely blurring, but there are still some distinctions that allow the fragrance to appeal to one gender over the other. In our category, Oriental fragrances, the line does not exist. They will wear a fragrance if it appeals to them, irrespective of whether the fragrance is marked for him or her, irrespective whether the fragrance is French or Oriental.

How should men go about choosing the right perfume for them? The selection process is near identical. First and foremost is to understand or have an understanding of the type of fragrance you are looking for. A good fragrance rarely works as a starting point. Second would be trial. To look for fragrance that meet your requirement and to test them first on the blotter and if they like it, then on the skin to see how the fragrance wears. It might look like a long drawn process, but this in my view is the ideal way to select a fragrance. Can you roughly share the different types of fragrances will suit which type of men? Fragrances for men can be classified in

two segments, Mainstream and Niche. In the mainstream environment you have fragrances that are woody, fresh or colonic. In the niche segment, there is far more experimentation where these notes are entwined to reveal a fougere essence, animalic/leathery and sometimes and accord designed to revel Chypre notes. It is all about tastes and trial. If there is a fragrance that you really like, chances are that is the fragrance for you. What are the common mistakes men make when using perfume? They apply too little! Don’t be shy, you like it wear it with pride. Which is most important when choosing the right perfume: occasion, season, or personal taste? Why? Taste is foremost when it comes to choosing a fragrance. Taste at any particular point of time also reveals your current mindset so the fragrance you end up purchasing will be the one that suits you. When you create a fragrance, do you have a certain kind of man in mind or do you produce one with the general male population in mind? The skew is generally driven by marketing, but believe it or not, smells have an age as well. The fragrance has to be a combination of notes that when put together as a formulation, they appear youthful. What is the next trend in men’s fragrance? Moving away from the norm, fragrances will be far more complex and will be for the discerning.

Beauty exclusive How do you find the city? We’ve learnt it’s your third time here. Well it definitely seems beautiful outside of this window! We landed last night and had dinner at Atmosphere, which was just amazing, but that’s about it so far. I always love to take a cooking class when I travel because that’s the way that I’m able to describe a culture; food is a language that I know well. But there’s no time for it on this trip unfortunately.

TheLivelyBlake Interview Gossip Girl star Blake Lively set afoot in the land of the emirates as part of her ambassadorship to Gucci’s fragrance Premiere. In an exclusive chat to the Hollywood A-lister, our Sherry Tenorio learnt that she’s shy, she loves food, and that she doesn’t mind walking barefoot.

A

lthough tired and spent from more than 20 hours of travel, jet lag, lack of sleep, and non-stop media appearances, the stunning actress still managed to look everso-chic in her sequined dark blue Gucci short dress. Admitting that her toes had been tired from walking in sky-high heels, the barefoot star did not step far from the Upper East Side queen she once portrayed in Gossip Girl, Serena Van Der

Woodsen.

The hit television series was undoubtedly the key to her stardom, but the real Blake Lively said that while they might dress alike, they’re actually totally different. She’s a very private person, tremendously shy, and a food aficionado. Yet, despite the contradictions from her famous role as a Manhattan goddess, Lively is indeed a modern icon. Her beauty reminds of timeless Hollywood glamour, apparently the perfect fitting ambassador for the scent of high fashion brand’s Gucci, reliving the fashion house’s couture collection in a box of fragrance. Dishing more about her collaboration with the brand, her future in 2014, and her must-try beauty tips, here’s our 30 minutes with ‘the’ Blake Lively.

Why do you think fragrance is important to women? Scent in general is one of the most emotional connections we have to memories, whether it’s the fragrance of a loved one, the smell of freshly cut grass in the spring, or pies in the autumn. Whatever that smell is that you identify with, it’s a very emotional thing. It’s a lot like a super power. I was just with my mom and when I left I sprayed her smell on my sweater and took that with me on the plane. It’s such a powerful thing to have, to have that signature scent and have that person with you. Do you still remember the moment you learnt that you’re chosen as the new face of Gucci? It was kind of a surprise for me – I didn’t know any of it was in the works. When they asked me to join, it was an immediate yes followed by 12 cartwheels! What characteristics define the Gucci woman in your opinion? It’s that masculinity and empowerment along with a femininity and sensuality. There’s a more bohemian girl that Gucci represents with its more diaphanous looks. Then there’s the glamazon, a bit like we did in the commercial – bold, gilded, and shiny. Whatever it is that you’re wearing, you always look at the threads and you see strength with Gucci. Are you more a glitzy urbanite or a homebody? I’m somewhere in between, I think. I’m very private and very shy by nature, which is strange because my profession is very public and, in turn, your personal life is up for grabs. If I wasn’t in this position, I would wear more sparkly numbers walking down the street in New York City, but instead I have a tendency to cover up a little more. But when I’m walking around my house, I’m decked out! I love to dress up – I never grew out of that stage, and I do that more often than I should admit.

Beauty Exclusive Scent in general is one of the most emotional connections we have to memories, whether it’s the fragrance of a loved one, the smell of freshly cut grass in the spring, or pies in the autumn.

I needed everything, but then I started travelling so much that I realised that it’s just a horrible idea. It’s always fun to change things up, so there’s never one thing I always take with me. Also, when you’re only taking a carry on, you have to be more creative. When you’re travelling you always want to take a piece of your journey back home with you, so it’s always better to take less. Then you have an excuse to shop! Fragrances aside, what other smell do you like? Hmm…I would have to say cookies (giggles).

concise! The things that are most important to me in life are family and food. Family is a part of everything I do in my life, so that would be the one key word I would pick.

You must have had tons of red carpet moments. But what was your single favourite? I don’t know if there’s only one, but I love the Met Ball every year because it’s an event that’s purely about celebrating fashion, its history and its icons. Often on red carpets, people are very concerned about making a faux pas, whereas at the Met, people are very brave and it’s always fun to see the fashion there.

Is there anyone whose career you would like to emulate? I don’t ever really look at people’s careers and want to mould myself after them. It’s more about connecting with a script and a character and a director. But Gene Kelly must have had a really fun time – I can’t sing or dance to save my life, but if I could emulate anyone’s career, it would probably be his.

Care to share your beauty secrets? My routine is kind of the same as it’s always been. The older I get the more I realise the importance of things like using moisturiser and applying SPF. I grew up in California where it’s popular to have a tan, but I now believe in finding a great bronzer that gives you that same glow and taking care of yourself. I love putting coconut oil on the ends of my hair before shampooing.

You travel so much. What are the things you never leave home without? It always changes, because I only ever take a carry on. I used to always pack two checked bags because I thought that

What’s the best beauty tip you’ve picked up from the industry? It’s a thing you do not want to try at home, but it’s when a makeup artist curls your eyelashes with a spoon and their thumb. Seriously you do not want to try it at home; you’ll be left with no eyelashes. But it’s so cool to see. What does 2014 have in store for you? I’m about to start a movie called Age of Adaline, which I’m so excited about because I get to explore every decade of fashion on camera from the early 1900s until now. That’s just my dream in real life, and I get to do it with a costume designer who has actually designed the most beautiful costumes I’ve ever seen in movies. I’m really excited about the hair and the makeup because it’s such an integral part of the storytelling.

We know that you don’t have a stylist. How do you go about choosing an outfit? The same way as everyone. People make a big fuss about that, I don’t know why. It’s a lot of extra effort, but I love it so much, I make the time to do it. It’s a direct expression of self. How would you describe yourself in three words? And, what are the most important things in your life? I don’t think I could describe myself in three words – I’m really bad at being

Celebrating Valentine’s Day in Your Own Special Way From chocolates and bouquets of red roses to romantic candle-lit dinners and weekend getaways, Saadiya Ahmad asked four couples what their most memorable Valentine’s Day gift was, and what made it so special.

43

FEATURE

Farah and Asif Dogar

Farah says that she and her husband celebrate Valentine’s Day with aplomb every year because they are both sentimental about the day, plus the fact that both are romantics at heart. Farah narrates, “To be honest, we always love Valentine’s Day. I even loved it growing up as a young girl where I exchanged Valentine’s Day cards and chocolates with friends in school. But my absolute best and most memorable Valentine’s Day was when we celebrated it right after our wedding as a couple. The day is still vivid in my mind; I woke up to see a massive bouquet of red roses with handwritten note next to it on the dining table. The note said to open the front door and look under the mat. I did that and found yet another note which invited me to a weekend getaway to The Atlantis Hotel. I was so excited all day and spent part of the day getting ready. Then by evening, Asif came in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce to collect me and whisked us off to the hotel where he had booked the suite. From that moment on it was amazing; a delicious 7-course Valentine’s Day dinner to a romantic evening under the stars, sipping coffee together. Even the next day was filled with his and her pampering at the spa as well as an afternoon frolicking with dolphins. Overall it was just an unforgettable and wonderful experience...One that I will never forget.”

Dedra Stevenson and Dr. Hussain Maseeh

I have the greatest Valentine’s Day story. First of all, you should know that my husband’s birthday is on Valentine’s Day, and in the year 2000, I gave him the best birthday/Valentine’s Day gift a man could ever get. After we had three sons, finally I was expecting our one and only daughter, Hanan. Her due date was February 23, and since I was slated to have a fourth C-section, I had the luxury of personally choosing her birthday. My doctor was a woman, and even though it meant that she had to work on a day she wouldn’t have normally wanted to, she agreed to grant my request of having our bundle of joy on Valentine’s Day, so that my husband and my baby daughter could have the same birthday. And now, every year since, my husband and my daughter have the best time planning ‘their’ birthday, and I know that it will always keep them close to each other, bound by the fact that they are both Valentine babies.”

Dr. Hassan Galadari and Dr. Leena Amiri

“There are some who wait for the 14th of February. Celebrating the day and making sure they don’t forget the gift, the flower or that card under the pillow. However, like any other day, it comes and goes. The essence of the day and what is celebrated should endear to more than just a time and place. It should become an experience and not a simple memory. On February 14, 2013, I sat down with the woman I had married three days back. I looked into her eyes and saw not what life was, but how the future will be. Our eyes twinkled. I remember no words spoken at that moment. What was said was communicated by a subtle touch. It was as if our souls were conversing. I did give her a rose that day as we had dinner on the beach, but what we really gave each other was something entirely much more. What we gave one another was the gift of each other. And today on the 14th of February, there are two sets of eyes that look back at me. I see my wife’s tender eyes telling me how it all began, and from the corner, I see my newborn daughter’s eyes, gleaming, telling me that the 14th was simply not just a date.”

Rubia Moghees and Malik Moghees Anwar

“It has been a while since we celebrated any Valentine Day as I don’t believe in the day, now as such. But I have a vivid memory of celebrating my first valentine’s after marriage in great style. This was February 14, 2001 and I sent an anonymous fax to my husband who is a banker. I invited him for dinner and told him to wear red. When he came back home he didn’t mention anything about the invite as he thought that it was a prank. He was pleasantly surprised to see the bouquet that I had left for him in our room and waited in the restaurant before he joined me for a romantic candle-light dinner. We came back home after a lovely time spent in each other’s company and proceeded to play some silly love games later on that night. The rest of the Valentines Day’s have been mostly spent in exchanging chocolates, cards and going out for lunches. We have decided not to ever go for dinner on Valentine’s Day anymore simply because it is such a chaotic fully booked day and we invariably end up not making reserving the seats earlier and unfortunately it always seems now that the quality of the food also takes a nosedive!”

The Significance of Valentine’s Day:

Until the late 19th century, the significance of Valentine’s Day was limited to romantic couples who courted their lovers and exchanged love letters, poems or gifts on Valentine’s Day. However, towards the end of the 19th century the significance of this festival underwent a change. People started celebrating Valentine’s Day to express love and affection towards all those who made their lives special. And now Valentine’s Day is today considered an occasion to celebrate all beautiful human relationships as well as the day to celebrate love in all forms. In many schools, get-togethers are organised by children to celebrate Valentine’s Day and people even make it a point to wish ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ to their teachers, parents, family, friends, boss and colleagues. Essentially, Valentine’s Day today is a fun filled day to celebrate and honour the universal feelings and emotions which represent love.

cover story She is undoubtedly one of the most successful and inf luential figures in Dubai’s fashion industry. For one, she’s the co-founder (not to mention the head buyer and creative director) of the long-running concept boutique s*uce that has been a pride of the emirates. The phenomenon of this multi-brand store actually paved the way for her further strengthening bond with fashion. Her Zayan The Label has garnered nods from fashion critics and liking from fashionistas, pushing her to continuously improve in her design craft and to put up its standalone store. Indeed, Beirutborn Zayan Ghandour’s love affair with fashion has defined her success – a turnaround from being a journalist – yet this does not actually make her. Zayan’s pride will, and always will be, her twins. In this AW exclusive, know her and her route to achieving her goals as she pursues her passion in fashion. When and how did you begin your love story with fashion? Like all little girls I always loved fashion and loved dressing up. After university, I started working as a journalist for the Daily Star, an affiliate of The Herald Tribune, covering mostly fashion stories, though I also touched on politics and whatever would come up. Around the same time, I started designing one-off T-shirts. The t-shirts really took off! A few years later I got married and moved to Dubai and continued designing the T-shirt range that was stocked in one of the boutiques in Dubai. And when I met one of the co-founders Fatima, it turned out she was one of my biggest fans and had bought all my t-shirts! What prompted you to create s*uce? Why s*uce? Fatima, Dina and I met by chance at a dinner as we had many mutual friends and we found out that we all shared a mutual love for travel and discovering new and exciting brands and concepts. We felt that there was a niche in the market that needed to be filled and so s*uce was born out of that realisation. We wanted to bring, not only new and exciting brands and support up-andcoming designers, but also wanted to create an entire world, a lifestyle, a shopping experience unlike any other. So we set up a company, found a location and went buying, and within a year the first s*uce boutique was open in The Village Mall. Can you share with us the early years of the boutique? How was it before, compared to now? What are your visions of it? When we first opened we used to write the receipts manually, we didn’t have an office space so we met our designers and

cover story customers in the shop itself. Actually, the first day that we opened there was no electricity in the mall, but as they say, the show must go on and so we opened anyway and just shut when the sun went down. We opened s*uce with 12 brands – 12 brands that we knew were cool and interesting – brands that were ‘hot’ at the time. Now we have around 600 brands and over 100 of which are regional. We have three s*uce locations, an outlet shop in Dubai Outlet Mall, in addition to three new concepts and three completely new ones on the way. S*uce Gifts is the lifestyle offering of the s*uce concept – it has a mix of quirky design objects, home accessories, and gift ideas and is located in Wasl square. The s*uce Gift machine is housed in s*uce Gifts and is a 24/7 gifts vending machine with over 35 prepackaged gift items to choose from. S*uce In the Hood is the more casual offering, located in CityWalk. Coming soon: s*uce on-sea – for beach, lounge and resort wear, s*uce ROCKS – highend fine jewellery and saucette – for Kids. Who are your major influencers in fashion? I’ve always loved Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie on Sex and the City and of course I’m always inspired by street style and bloggers. Also I find particular cities and cultures inspiring – simply walking down the streets of London or Tokyo is incredibly inspiring – I love the Japanese – and the way they behave and dress is so much fun. What keeps you in love with fashion? Fashion is high energy – it’s never static, always moving changing and evolving. I think that’s what keeps us all constantly enamoured and enthralled. How do you choose the pieces for s*uce? Any standard or process you follow? Or, is it more emotional process? It is definitely a totally instinctive process. I don’t believe in over-thinking or overanalysing any situation and most of my buying happens on gut feeling. We really do buy what we love, and love it without hesitation. We also love discovering and supporting new designers, and to that end we travel to all the trade shows and are constantly researching and buying. We don’t only buy during the main seasons, we are always buying, 365 days a year – and so we receive products and collections on a daily basis, which ensures

49

cover story there is always something new in stores. What made you decide to enter fashion design after establishing the shop? Any difference between your two loves? I had always planned on going back to designing but the first 6 years I was buying for s*uce all by myself, which along with being creative director is more than a full-time job. A few years ago the s*uce buying team grew and we found the right people for the Zayan brand and I was finally able to dedicate time to start the label properly. Designing is only 20% of the work of a fashion designer, a lot of work goes into managing production and quality control etc., and for that you need a proper dedicated team. How do you see your label in the next three years? We are opening our first Zayan the Label standalone store this year and hopefully more over the next three years. Zayan the Label is also currently stocked in boutiques and department stores worldwide and we hope to continue increasing our wholesale in the next few years. You are already an achiever at such a young age. Is there anything else you’d like to achieve in your career in fashion? We really have so many plans for the next 5-10 years so everything we have done so far is just the beginning. What are your fashion must-haves? High heels and a tutu skirt. Name trends to follow or pieces to invest this SS14. Sheer paneling is big for SS14, full midi skirts, embroidered prints and tops with asymmetric hemlines. Can you share with us the theme of your label’s SS14 collection? My SS14 collection is called ‘Dream a Little. Love a lot’. And it is about the girl who is never afraid to keep on dreaming, even if she might get hurt along the way. What makes you proud? My two twin girls make me proud every day. Last question: how do you describe your love affair with fashion? Eternally frivolous!

Doing what

As the saying goes, ‘Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life’. We speak to five incredible women who are passionate about what they do, so much so that they’ve been recognised as champions in their own field at the Arab Woman Awards UAE 2013. family and friends, Kalimati was born on 10/10/2010 at 10am. Why do you love what you do? I love children. I used to volunteer at special needs schools since I was in middle school. Most of my projects in University were about special needs and one of them was about sign language. I love seeing the children who come to Kalimati thrive by developing a stronger personality and stronger communication skills. I love getting feedback from the families especially from mothers that they now understand their child and know how to communicate with them. This response is so precious to us. I work in Kalimati because I love to.

Bedour Al Raqbani (Education)

What do you do and how did you get started in it? I am the Founder and Director of Kalimati Speech and Communication Center in Dubai. The idea of Kalimati started when I found out that my precious baby girl was born profoundly deaf. We were seeking professional treatment abroad where I was able to visit some centres and receive valuable support. When I came back to the UAE, I wasn’t satisfied with the approach, services and ambience of the centers my daughter was attending. With the support and financial donation from my dear

52

Why is it important to be passionate about what you do? Working with children with additional needs requires a passionate heart. These children are very special and when they cross our path we have to make sure to guide them in the best way possible. We support parents by empowering them and they in return empower their children. Our families are the pillars of Kalimati. Is that passion innate or something that can be built over time? It really depends on the individual. For me, Kalimati is a dream that is now a reality. I have always had passion for special needs but now it has grown into my mission in life. How do you spread that passion to others around you? Raising awareness is so vital in gaining understanding from society. We are fortunate to work with a lot of volunteers and from the youth who have developed this passion. Is love for what you do enough to

overcome obstacles? Love and having a positive attitude does help in many situations. Obstacles allow you to develop a stronger perception and to think creatively. What advice can you share with our readers about loving what you do and how to be on the right track to success? I would like to encourage readers to be creative. We are constantly faced with obstacles in life. If we turn these obstacles into solutions we would really make the world into a better place, as the cliché goes. How do you quantify success? The smiles that we receive in Kalimati would quantify our success. Our success could never be measured by an audit report or a bank statement. Is self-gratification from what someone does enough or should it have a positive impact on society as well? Both are important. But definitely selfgratification comes first. If the person genuinely believes in himself/herself and on the good that they do it will automatically show on them and reflect on their work. Is there any difference, in your opinion, between the love of a woman for her work and career, and that of a man’s passion towards his? I think the difference is relative to the personal experience. Women are known to multitask and we take on board different roles in life. I do not look at gender differences in general as the men and women in my life are all passionate about their career. I have been raised by a family that always supported me and encouraged me. I anticipate raising my children in the same way.

profile workshops for young writers. And finally, I am starting my own publishing house which will focus on the rarer genres in the Arab world, scifi, fantasy, paranormal, graphic novels, etc. Is love for what you do enough to overcome obstacles? On the one hand, yes, it is love and passion which keep you going despite all odds; however, in most cases, you need to surround yourself with the right circle of support (family, friends, people with similar passions), so that when the ultimate moment of doubt or failure blindsides you, they are there to pick you up, remind you of your strengths, and make sure you look forward rather than backward. What qualities do you believe are vital to success in any field? Discipline, first and foremost. A lot of people who want to write, think that inspiration will come to them, and then they will write. The opposite is true, you must carve out time in your schedule to sit and to write; that’s when inspiration will join you. A book cannot be finished by dreaming it; it is finished word by word as you sit there for hours, typing away.

Noura Al Noman (Literature)

What do you do and how did you get started in it? I write books for children and young adults (YA). I started in 2010 with a picture book for children aged 3-5 years. In the Arab world, there is now a shift in children’s literature; we are slowly moving away from lecturing children towards fun books which can be subtly educational. In 2012 my first Arabic science fiction novel for young adults, Ajwan, was published. The YA category in the Arab world is very recent, and there is a huge deficit in many genres. I chose sci-fi because I had been reading it for close to 35 years, and I felt that it could excite YA to read more Arabic books. It seems the Arab world was ready for it, because Ajwan was successful among both YA and adults. Why do you love what you do? I love reading; it has changed my life and shaped the person that I am today. I encouraged my six children to read, and I am content with the way books have made them better people. I believe books are important and I wanted to share that love with more YA. Also, writing is an extremely rewarding activity, because it opens up a window into other worlds and allows the writer to create with ultimate freedom.

And eventually, the product (a book) is shared by others, and when the readers tell you how your book had transported them into other worlds, it is a great feeling. Why is it important to be passionate about what you do? Without passion, an activity quickly becomes monotonous and the element of creativity is lost. The product will reflect that, and the reward would be minimal at best. Also, passion itself is the reward, the creative juices affect the person doing the activity, chemically altering their mood. If I am passionate about what I do, those who see the end product will quickly notice the passion, and will also share in it. How do you spread that passion to others around you? In the case of reading, I have been successful in exciting my children about writing by telling them the stories of the books I read. This in turn led them to read those very books, and later, they outgrew them and chose their own. As for writing, I am currently using my twitter and facebook accounts to encourage more and more writers to write, by describing my experience, and sharing links about tips on writing. Also, recently I have started giving

What advice can you share with our readers about loving what you do and how to be on the right track to success? We waste a lot of time during the course of a day. Watch yourself and you will notice the wasted time. If you are truly passionate about something, then you will make time in your day for that interest. Love isn’t enough. Hard work and some sacrifices are necessary. The results will astound you. How do you quantify success? Completion of a project, after giving it your all. Now, whether the others like it or not is another matter, but you have done your very best and you have completed it. Give yourself a pat on the back. Is self-gratification from what someone does enough or should it have a positive impact on society as well? First comes self-gratification of course. I cannot see myself breaking my back doing something that did not bring me satisfaction. I believe that anything which I spend hours doing must benefit me and others – even if very few others. And if the original goal was to bring a positive impact on society, then that is an admirable project indeed.

profile that can be built over time? I would say innate – it comes very naturally if you believe in what you do. How do you spread that passion to others around you? At work I would say through interacting with my team members and colleagues. Outside work I spread a great deal of what I believe in through social media. I also enjoy giving talks about what I do at universities and corporate panel discussions. Is love for what you do enough to overcome obstacles? That and focus. If you have the ability to focus on your end goal you will certainly overcome any challenges.

Muna Al Gurg

(Businesswoman) What do you do and how did you get started in it? I am the Director of Retail for the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group. Working on the operations and marketing of retail brands like IDdesign and Better Life Home Appliances is something I really enjoy. I started working many years ago in the Marketing department of the group and gradually worked towards where I am right now. Why do you love what you do? Creativity runs in my blood. I am constantly thinking out of the box and can wake up at 4am with an idea and note it down! That’s really why I chose Advertising and Marketing as my major and ended up working in that field. I love what I do because I get to be creative on a daily basis in the retail sector in the UAE, which also means that I am able to inject new ideas into the region. Why is it important to be passionate about what you do? Passion brings out incredible results. If you believe in what you do you will always excel, which is an integral part of a job. It also brings out the best in your team which directly has a ripple effect on your business. Is that passion innate or something

54

What qualities do you believe are vital to success in any field? Determination. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again.

HE Raja Al Gurg

What advice can you share with our readers about loving what you do and how to be on the right track to success? When I first started working 12 years ago, I started on the shop floor. I worked my way up to where I am right now. My advice would be know your business inside out, interact with your customers, warehouse employees, salespeople – everyone. The greatest asset of any company is its people and that determines your decision when you reach the top.

What do you do and how did you get started in it? I am the Managing Director of Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group LLC, a conglomerate which has 23 companies involved in diverse sectors such as consumer, retail & lifestyle, building and construction as well as real estate. I was involved in education, before answering a call to duty which required me to assist my father HE Easa Saleh Al Gurg in managing the affairs of the Group.

Is self-gratification from what someone does enough or should it have a positive impact on society as well? Every step of your business career should have a positive impact on society. Empowering others to do well is fulfilling to say the least. Real CSR and commitment to pro bono should be brought into and embraced by every single member of the workforce. I personally get involved with numerous CSR initiatives such as student sponsorships, blood donations and one of my favourite projects was the building of a school in Zanzibar. Is there any difference, in your opinion, between the love of a woman for her work and career, and that of a man’s passion towards his? I am a big believer in gender equality and a woman who is determined to succeed will work with the equivalent passion to a man.

(Lifetime Achievement Award)

Why do you love what you do? For me, entering the corporate world was a major transition from the educational field where I had spent a significant part of my early career. Joining a family business was also a challenge. The satisfaction of helping the business grow and playing a pivotal role in translating the founder’s vision to reality has been incredible. How do you spread that passion to others around you? A strong work ethic and unwavering commitment to successfully accomplishing any task has been my signature. I would like to think that the senior management of the Group is inspired to similarly achieve greater goals and also share these traits with staff across our companies. Is love for what you do enough to overcome obstacles? Obstacles are always a stepping stone

profile

What qualities do you believe are vital to success in any field? What advice can you share with our readers about loving what you do and how to be on the right track to success? Do everything in your power to fulfill your goals and dreams. We are all at different stages in our development, but it is important for us all to raise the level of our performance by stretching ourselves and striving for excellence. Each woman should be aware of herself and her capabilities and never lose her sense of self worth. At the end of the day, we are all human and may make mistakes. However, the one thing that separates the great from the ordinary is the ability to learn from ones mistakes. How do you quantify success? I prefer the term excellence to success. The goal of excellence is to do everything in your power to fulfill aspirations and dreams. This may include raising the level and consistency of your performance and enhancing the quality of your life. Everyone begins at a different place with respect to personal attributes. When you develop and stretch those attributes to the limit, you touch the level of excellence. Is there any difference, in your opinion, between the love of a woman for her work and career, and that of a man’s passion towards his? Work is increasingly being seen by women not merely as a source of income but as part of establishing a personal as well as professional identity. A career woman will demonstrate the same kind of commitment like a man, but her challenges are far greater. For most women the major constraints faced are related to the time needed to fulfill family obligations. A significant challenge for a woman in business is to effectively balance work and family life. At the same time, I am firm believer that women today can shape their destiny through knowledge enhancement, active networking as well as mentoring. More women should be aware of the opportunities available to them in developing themselves. Furthermore, they should inspire change for a better future for them.

to success. For me surmounting an obstacle is a test of character. You will be surprised to realise how far you can go from the point you thought was the end.

Sheikha Madiyah Al Sharqi (Fashion Designer)

What do you do and how did you get started in it? I am the fashion designer of Madiyah Al Sharqi. I studied at the French Fashion University Esmod in Dubai where I learnt the technical side of fashion. During my studies, I also interned with the renowned Lebanese designer Abed Mahfouz where I gained great insight into the creative process. Why do you love what you do? I love what I do because I’m blessed to have a job that is also my hobby. Following my passion for my work/hobby has enabled me to tap into new talents. It has allowed me to gain skills in areas I am strong in and has pushed me to become better. This is not just good for my work but also for my life in general because it makes it a lot more meaningful. Is that passion innate or something that can be built over time? My passion is definitely innate. Ever since I was a little girl I used to love watching our tailors at home transform simple fabrics into lavish gowns which made me become so passionate about fashion. However, I feel that this passion has definitely grown over time and intensified during my studies. How do you spread that passion to others around you? By witnessing my company’s growth, I’m spreading my passion. Is love for what you do enough to overcome obstacles? Love is definitely important in order

to keep thriving. However, in such a competitive industry, love is not enough, you have to be strong and confident in order to tackle challenges in the right way. What qualities do you believe are vital to success in any field? As a fashion designer, I feel that being able to draw well is extremely vital because this is where the whole creative process begins. However, to fully flourish in any type of field, I think it’s important to have a strong desire to fulfill your dreams. If you keep chasing your dreams and stay focused, you will become successful. What advice can you share with our readers about loving what you do and how to be on the right track to success? I have always believed in myself and this is truly important. You have to believe in yourself and your potential. If you think negatively of yourself and your work, others will do as well. How do you quantify success? I personally measure my success when I see women wear a Madiyah Al-Sharqi outfit. Whenever friends or relatives tell me ‘I saw a woman wearing Madiyah Al Sharqi’ at an event or wedding, I get so excited every time and it really motivates me to keep going. Is self-gratification from what someone does enough or should it have a positive impact on society as well? It really depends on what you do. There are a lot of artists that create pieces for their personal satisfaction and prefer not to share their work with anyone. However, as a fashion designer you want to beautify the world and so it automatically impacts society as well.

Rediscovering Muscat A stay at the Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, paves the way for AW to relearn the traditions and charms of the Omani capital. Check out our new discoveries…

B

ewitching with its haven of nature – unspoilt mountains, pristine beaches, wadis and caves – Oman (or Muscat particularly) has a way of casting a spell to its guests. And, we can’t deny that we’re besotted. Each time we visit, we get charmed. Our most recent getaway led us to its famed Al Bustan Palace. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, located about 45 minutes away from Muscat International Airport, was originally built to host the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit in 1985. Now, the palatial beauty is open to guests, be it royalty, VIP, or the public. Welcoming us to the hotel was its dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains overlooking the sea of Oman, after driving past through the perfectly manicured greenery. The hotel’s lobby was definitely grand – a picturesque

70

image on its own – that we easily dismissed the strong frankincense smell that greeted us. Yet not to be easily missed was the coffee man who handed us the tastiest Arabic coffee we’ve drank for such a long time. The man was a certain Mohammed Al Wahaibi, a second generation in his family who dedicated his passion in pouring coffee, and who had been greeting guests with his coffee for the past 28 years in Al Bustan. His presence added to a wonderful welcome to culture and tradition, fitting perfectly in the grandeur and old charm of the hotel. Once ushered to our room that provided private access to its lagoon pool, we felt more than at home. We’re never stepping out of Al Bustan Palace, we thought. Staying in With 250 guest rooms and suites, including

getaway eight presidential suites, guests are ensured a memorable stay with deluxe accommodations. Exuding the richness of Arabian culture, art and history, all rooms and suites feature private balconies with views of the sea of Oman or the Hajjar mountains, and are fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and services. Guests are treated to distinctive indulgences including spacious floor plans, luxurious linens and exclusive butler service for the suites. With its mesmerising seaside locale, the resort is a casually elegant retreat with unlimited opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation. The soothing, ever-present rhythm of the sea inspires renewal in this serene setting, which offers a state-ofthe-art gym with sauna and steam rooms; wellness rooms and gazebos featuring indoor and outdoor massages. Guests are treated to the finest culinary cuisine at the resort. Al Khiran Terrace is an all-day, indoor-and-outdoor dining restaurant overlooking the sea of Oman. Nestled right by the water’s edge, the indoor/outdoor Beach Pavilion is a specialty restaurant serving the freshest fish and seafood, while China Mood features authentic Chinese cuisine in a sophisticated, yet comfortable, setting. Guests can also relax with a cocktail and live entertainment at Al Marjan Lounge or a uniquely flavoured tea with a

modern twist at The Atrium Tea Lounge. We sampled the fresh and savoury dinner by the beach where we’ve had a taste of the most delectable focaccia bread in the whole of Oman. With the music of the sea playing in the background, the fine sand touching our feet, and the cool breeze of winter touching our faces, we had the most extraordinary atmosphere for a perfect evening. The hotel’s attempt to make our stay more engaging was not wasted as we had the amazing moment at learning how to make Arabic coffee as well as how to concoct chocolate fondue. Not only was the dessert paired with the best coffee in town heavenly, but it was a learning experience for us even to those who are not so fond of the kitchen. The food and drink were divine – what else could we ask for. Meanwhile, a totally relaxing time awaited everyone inside the rooms. The access to the lagoon pool made a private dip utterly refreshing. A quick call for in-room dining also complemented the best unwind. On one hand, parents can enjoy a host of amenities at the resort or a night out on the town, while kids have access to Ritz Kids, an engaging program for children of all ages to take part in various beach and outdoor adventures, including Al Bustan reef snorkeling, line fishing, table tennis, beach soccer, remote control car racing, and arts and crafts. The program also includes a swimming academy and kayak academy featuring technical instruction and safety education.

Outside Al Bustan It would be a real shame to hide inside the hotel, and not explore a bit of Muscat – after all Al Bustan Hotel is not a far drive from the city proper. The walled city of Muscat lies in a small bay, guarded by the spectacular twin forts of Mirani & Jalali. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos’s Palace - Al Alam - is an admirable sight. Al Alam Palace, the Sultan’s Palace in old Muscat, is bordered by the Al Jalali and Al Mirani fortress, displaying the unique ancient architecture of the Sultanate, built in the 16th century to protect the Omanis from invaders. Muscat also boasts of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, showcasing traditional Arab architecture and insights on the Arab culture, with a library of more than 20,000 information sources. Then there’s Bait Al Zubair Museum, from which visitors can have a glimpse of traditional Omani crafts and learn about the Sultanate’s rich culture; as well as Nizwa Fort, Bahla Fort, Rustaq Fort, Nakhal Fort, Hazam Castle, and Gibreen Castle, which dates back even before the Islamic era. You could also head to Bait Al Muzna, a historical

72

landmark, mirroring the beauty and culture of Oman with a contemporary art approach designed to inspire Oman’s artists as well as its people; or the Royal Opera House Muscat, located in Shatti Al-Qurm district, the leading arts and culture organisation in the Sultanate that reflects contemporary Omani architecture. In the end, we decided to go for a dhow trip. The one-hour boat ride gave us a breathtaking view of the city’s coastline as well as provided us front row access to Muscat’s virgin nature, paving the way for our photography skills to be tested. And, who would be going home without paying a visit to the city’s famed Muttrah Souk? Muttrah, part of the capital area, is the lively, busy trading port of the area. Its main attraction – Souq Al Dhalam - ‘Market of Shades’ – is a labyrinth of alleyways covered by a palm roof and lit by lanterns, leading to the delights of antiques, gold, old silver, traditional handicrafts, jewelleries and the rich scent of frankincense. It is essential to explore this part of Muscat since it gives a glimpse of the dynamism of the typical Omani day-to-day life.

Weekend at

THE ST. REGIS ABU DHABI

T Don’t be intimidated by its grand staircase, its tall banisters, its opulent lobby – The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is a welcoming property, able to make each of its guests feel more than at home.

he announcement of a long weekend may be short notice but our anticipation of it didn’t deter us from scouring for the best place for a getaway. Staycation would prove to be the failsafe choice, as well as travelling to the neighbouring capital. Question in mind was where exactly to stay, which was easily answered when we learnt that The St. Regis had opened in Abu Dhabi. Why was it first choice? Well, we’ve been at their property in Saadiyat Island and in Bangkok, and let’s say since then, The St. Regis had become a favourite.

panoramic waterfront views of the Arabian Gulf. The luxurious interiors feature traditional Arabian elements, from the dentils on the crown molding on the bed posts to the subtle pattern in soft gold carpeting. The classical-style furniture is made with polished dark walnut with sleek curves and ornate detailing. The walls and ceilings are clad in white stone mosaic, with exquisite carved marble moldings at each doorway, corner and seam.

Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) together with local designers, the hotel’s understated interiors were inspired by the region’s rich heritage and the St. Regis brand’s legacy. Designed with the colours of the local sands, the traditional cuisine and souks in mind, HBA has imagined a luxurious setting in Abu Dhabi that is steeped in a sophisticated Art Deco past.

It boasts the extravagant Abu Dhabi Suite, considered the world’s highest suspended hotel suite – loftily positioned 200 metres above ground between the two towers and offering magnificent panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf, the Corniche and the city skyline. Spanning 1,120sqm the threebedroom, two-storey suite occupies part of the skybridge connecting the Nation Towers. The Grand Drawing Room takes centre stage in the Abu Dhabi Suite – an intricate glass dome with Art Deco detailing and a dramatic bronze chandelier with cascading strands of crystals. The elaborate interiors feature 24-carat gold leaf accents, leather wall tiles, jewel-toned velvet upholstered walls and intricate glass mosaic patterns. A graceful, curved staircase leads to the master suite, which includes a private bedroom, library, lounge and dining area. The Abu Dhabi Suite also features a spa, movie theatre, kitchen and gym, and comes with private elevator access.

The St. Regis Abu Dhabi also introduces Villa Toscana which serves regional specialties from Tuscany, Umbria and Emilia-Romagna in Italy. Guests may also enjoy unique dining experiences, tea and other fine beverages at Crystal Lounge, Cafe44, The Tea Lounge, Azura and Spa Café. The hotel has over 3,000sqm of leisure facilities, including the indulgent Reméde Spa for ladies, two outdoor swimming pools and the first Hommage Gentleman’s Grooming Atelier in the UAE. Guests can enjoy private access to the hotel’s Nation Riviera Beach Club, which is poised to become one of the most sought-after leisure destinations in Abu Dhabi when it opens later this year. Ideal for special celebrations and functions, The St. Regis Abu Dhabi also offers more than 4,800sqm of state-of-theart meeting and event space. The experience We thought that finding the hotel would be difficult. But one call to the Concierge Desk led us comfortably to The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Nevertheless, the hotel wasn’t as impressive as we expected it to be, at least from the outside. However, had we known what were waiting for us as the friendly doormen opened the huge tall doors, we would have practiced containing ourselves. ‘In complete awe’ is an understatement – and we might have opened our mouths for few seconds even. The hotel’s magnificent lobby features two ornate bronze banister staircases that lead from the floor, sweeping away from each other as they round the twin majestic pillars that frame the lobby Tea Lounge. The centerpiece in the lounge is an exquisite tapestry that depicts a pearl diving scene paying homage to Abu Dhabi’s natural resource-based economy in the past, with low-hanging Arabian lantern-inspired chandeliers in the foreground. The sight was utterly glorious – promising a luxurious recreation in the heart of the capital’s business district.

Receptions were tucked away from the lobby, providing more privacy to guests. Thankfully, the check-in was possible to be completed at the room – the baby we were with was already ready for bed. Once in the room, the same wonderful feeling of being in a dream home-away-from-home swept us away. The panoramic view of Abu Dhabi’s corniche as well as the rest of the capital was a stunning sight from our room in the 36th floor. Just looking through the glass window, while enjoying the image of Abu Dhabi and munching the fruit basket freely gifted, we felt that our drive to the city was totally worth it. And, for family who would need television for kids and adults, the luxury of having two main stations (one in front of the bed and the other in the receiving area) plus one small telly at the bathroom was much appreciated. Speaking of the bathroom, we must note that whoever thought of The St. Regis’ versions of bath tubs was quite a genius. It’s divine to find a sexy white tub in the middle of the bathroom, overlooking the busy city. We’re besotted, and we could stay for hours just lounging in there. Yet, thanks to our butler, who offered terrific

locally service, we were provided with options on how to further enjoy our stay at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. The spa was tempting. The dinner at Rhodes 44 was a must. And, of course, the Afternoon Tea ritual should always be on any guest’s list. So we did all of them. Beginning with a trip to the spa for a 60-minute Remede Customised Massage, which is a signature treatment at the Remède Spa at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi. To say that our time there was sheer bliss would be another understatement. Welcoming us at the spa was the design that was inspired by the sand dunes of the Arabian Desert together with St. Regis’ distinctive opulence and sophistication. Elegant curves guide guests through the corridors and into one of the 11 treatment rooms, which feature rich dark woods and embossed leather. The soothing lighting in the spa reflects the changing moods of the desert from a glorious sunset to the calmness of the night sky with stars as crystal chandeliers. The well-trained and highly skilled staff was perfect complement to the luxurious offering at the spa. Overall, the treatment itself was great relaxant, allowing us to dose off from time to time all throughout the session. Meanwhile, the dinner at Rhodes 44 was a similarly delightful experience. Although the sophisticated ambiance of the restaurant appears off-putting for families, the friendly and efficient restaurant staff was of great help especially when dining with children. Offering table chairs and serving fries before anything else would appease the child, and again the gesture was certainly appreciated by us. The menu selection was already delectable itself – no doubt that it came from a Michelin-starred chef. The food at the dinner, as well as the

buffet offered during breakfast, were deeply thought about, with thinking on how to appeal both visually and gastronomically. To cap our stay at the elegant The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, we stormed through the Tea Lounge for a heavenly ritual of Afternoon Tea. It was said that in the late 19th century, Lady Astor (the first lady of The St. Regis) used to invite her friends to afternoon tea at Club 400, which is now The St. Regis New York. Now, the tradition of afternoon at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi (and in all of the similar properties) honours Lady Astor’s vision. Indeed, a dainty and lady-like means of devouring scones, sandwiches and sipping teas, the ritual was provided in sheer perfection. They gave a selection of over 25 teas, explained each of them, and informed the guests of herbal and health aspects of the teas. Not to mention that the tea sets and cutleries in sight were gestures of sophistication and femininity. Probably not best fitting to families with shortattention spanned babies, the Afternoon Tea would be more enjoyable if spent in leisure time with friends, business colleagues and partners. Nonetheless, in our case, the take away bag filled with goodies and sweets was great barter to lesser time spent at the beautiful lounge just above the grandeur of the hotel’s lobby. In the end, we bade goodbye to The St. Regis Abu Dhabi with heavy hearts. It was difficult to say goodbye to something so beautiful, we thought. In our minds, we would hope to have another excuse – a long weekend, a meeting at the capital or simply a call for relaxation – to get ourselves booking nights at this magnificent hotel.

Relationship Myths You Need To Watch Out For From TV to childhood fairytales and family norms, most of us have some set preconceived notions of what we believe an ideal partner should be like. Yet many of these ideals could actually be sabotaging your relationship without you even being aware of it. Saadiya Ahmad debunks some of these relationships myths and separates the facts from the fiction.

The Realit y arah married Mike just three months after meeting each other. She says she felt he was the right man for her, that is until they got married and began living together... “Initially I was attracted to Mike because he was everything a girl could hope for in a man; sweet, kind, caring and a great listener. But a few months after we got married, I noticed that he was actually more into his family and friends than he was into me and that he was just so different to the man I had dreamed of. What do I do now?” she laments. Sarah is like many of us; she approached her relationship with preset ideals she learnt and felt this was the right way to be in a relationship. According to Dr. Saliha Afridi, Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of the Lighthouse Arabia Clinic, what defines a marriage differs from culture to culture. What is

82

acceptable in one culture is not necessarily acceptable in another. “Today, with Western media being more prevalent in all parts of the world, a lot of how marriage is perceived is often shaped by Hollywood and North American television,” she says therefore ideas of romance, friendship, soul mates, households, families, and parenting are all largely shaped by the media and as well as increasingly by social media. Media, says Dr. Afridi. Combined with our own personal subcultures of generation, family, religion, and ethnicity, we create a very heady mix, receiving very conflicting messages. “Our friends can tell us one thing, whereas our parents will tell us something else and the priest or the sheikh will tell us something completely different,” she explains and these competing messages can be very confusing and overwhelming to process and integrate into oneself.

Myth 8: Children will make you closer

In previous generations, when divorce was much more taboo and unaccepted, people had children to give reason to a marriage, making it harder to divorce. “Having children meant that now you had more to lose and more people that would be affected if you were to divorce – this inevitably lead to individuals investing more time, energy, and thought in to their marriage, maybe even feeling closer,” she explains. However, the reality is that having children is a major stressor emotionally and financially on a relationship. Nowadays divorce is more common and more accepted, with or without children, and thus, Dr. Afridi says that it is important that people really evaluate their relationships before they plan their family.

Expert Advice:

Dr. Saliha Afridi explains that the world has become a smaller place through media, internet, social media, and the smart phone, and it is also becoming a more distracting place. “We are receiving conflicting messages about what we should do and how we should behave in our relationships,” she says. “I think it is critical that people have a good understanding of themselves, their motivations, and their values so they won’t be swayed by the conflicting messages that are given to them.” She advises that we need to be develop a strong internal compass rather than rely on the external messages for our guidance.

RELATIONSHIP

More Than

One... 86

RELATIONSHIP

While some women may shudder at the thought of their husband taking a second or third wife, the reality is that in many cases, the family dynamic may be better than we think. Saadiya Ahmad takes a closer look at multiple marriages...

87

RELATIONSHIP is required to teach the family to work together and because of the tremendous commitment, self-discipline required. Another happy co-wife is Nadia who feels her marriage is blissful and everyone is pretty happy and getting along. She says,“I am a second wife and have just one co-wife. My kids consider her as a second mum and her kids the same for myself. What I have found is that to make our marriage work, we have had to put away many of our preconceived notions and barriers. We live in a duplex. I have one apartment and she has another. However, our homes are very open. Maybe it is considered taboo for people in the West but I also had a second mum as my father had two wives and feel it is not only a positive family dynamic but that it really depends on the husband. If he is truly aiming to make everyone happy and be fair, it will work. Otherwise it can sour just like any monogamous relationship...”

S

amira and Bilal have been married for the past nine years and Samira is a happy co-wife.“When I married Bilal I knew he was already married. Yet I agreed to be a second wife. Before meeting Bilal, I had been married to a man who not only cheated on me but lied about it. I was happy with the idea of complete honesty and transparency. It was actually refreshing that Bilal was open about his first wife and I actually met her. I don’t see my relationship being any different than that of a normal wife except that I see less of my husband. But when we do meet, we spend a lot of quality time and realistically, that is what matters the most...”

88

Almost everyone agrees that the foundation of any relationship is integrity. In polygamy – in contrast to extramarital relationships – there is no deception. The situation, for the most part, is transparent for all parties involved. Most importantly, if practiced correctly according to the tenets of Islam, there are no abandoned partners or children. In fact, when all parties to the polygamous union put the welfare of wives, husband, sister-wives, and children above their own selfish interests, a richer and more secure relationship results. The reality is that from the husband’s point of view, more wives and children must be provided for, not only financially but emotionally and psychologically. More leadership

In fact, the number of polygamous relationships among British Muslims is increasing, according to British Muslim groups. Khola Hassan, a lecturer in Islamic Law and volunteer on the UK Sharia Council says she has witnessed a sense of a right to polygamy develop particularly amongst third generation British Muslims. When she was growing up in Britain 20 years ago, she says no-one talked about polygamy as it was incredibly rare. However in the last 15 years, she has noticed more polygamous marriages taking place. It is not known exactly how many British Muslims are involved in polygamous marriages. Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra, a member of the Muslim Council of Britain, says polygamy is something Islam permits as it is in the Quran. But he stresses that there is more context which some Muslims are choosing to ignore. The Quran goes on to say if a man cannot treat his wives fairly, justly and equally then he can only marry one woman. “The moment it becomes secretive, or you start treating one less well than the other, then you are contradicting the conditions that the Quran sets out,” he tells. According to the Polygamy Survival Guide (www.sisters-magazine.com)

RELATIONSHIP while polygamy is frequently seen as benefiting the husband to the detriment of the wives, the reality is that it’s far more difficult for the husband. He has to not only fulfill the rights of both wives and support both families financially and emotionally, he has to juggle his time between them, settle any disputes and difficulties that arise, and all the while ensure that he’s being just and fair. For pious Muslims, polygamy is a huge and weighty responsibility and it’s an arduous task to get right. Meanwhile, each wife has no more responsibility than a monogamously married wife, and in some cases (e.g. where the wives choose to share accommodation) they can end up with a lot less responsibility than monogamous wives, as they share the running of the household and help each other out with the children. The site advises women not to see your co-wife as a rival. Instead, try to focus on strengthening your relationship with your husband. If you don’t feel secure in your relationship, then it’s only natural that you’d see the other wife as a threat. If you are sure of your relationship with your husband, then ask yourself why you feel threatened, and remind yourself of what you have. She advises to focus on your relationship with your husband as a single entity, disconnected from his other marriage. Islamic polygamy is not a triangular relationship; his marriage with you and his marriage with your co-wife are two separate relationships. You are not obliged to have anything to do with your co-wife, but if the two of you choose to be friends, then that’s a third and discrete relationship. However if your husband is not dividing up his time fairly, or not fulfilling your rights in Islam, then he is the guilty party, so don’t blame your co-wife for this. This applies whether it’s something minor or serious. Speak to him about the problem and tell him how you feel. If he’s a good husband, he’ll do something to rectify the situation. If he doesn’t and you’re having significant problems in your marriage because of it, then you need to go about dealing with it in the same way you would if you were monogamously married.

K Files by Tarek Al-Ghoussein Tarek Al-Ghoussein’s K Files at The Third Line sees the artist put together an installation of found objects, personal artifacts and newspaper clippings that consider the story of his family life via public forums such as Ebay. Presenting new work in the Project Space, Al-Ghoussein assembles an installation of personal paraphernalia that tell the story of his family life, pursuing a personalised investigative turn into his K Files documentation. His father’s role as the Kuwaiti dignitary to the United Nations, and later as an ambassador to the US, led towards the discovery that many moments of his family’s life are now public property.
