Sunny Mosaic Dolce&Gabbana proudly honours once more the traditions of Italian craftsmanship, and for the fist time applies the art of micro mosaic to its eyewear.

This process has its roots in ancient Roman culture: the technique of micro mosaic, or filato minute mosaic, required the spinning of the tiles that composed the mosaic, resulting in tiles that were much smaller and thinner than those used in classic mosaics. The micro mosaic, created exclusively for the Dolce&Gabbana eyewear collection, involves masterly expertise in the spinning of Murano glass, resulting in micro tiles that are then delicately and accurately laid by hand by skilled craftsmen, a technique that constitutes the very foundation of their craft.

To create the floral compositions in mosaic that embellish the eyewear of Dolce&Gabbana Mosaico Collection, over 30 different filato designs were developed that beautifully recreate the leaves, pistils, and petals of the flower. The result is a true inimitable ‘artwork’ expressing the most refined premium luxury, and it acts as a tribute to those floral themes that are so beloved by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, themes that are deeply embedded in the DNA of the brand.

The Louis Vuitton Museum

The Fondation Louis Vuitton will open its doors in Paris in 2014. This extraordinary space for art and culture was conceived by architect Frank Gehry as a vessel whose sails soar amidst the trees of the Bois de Boulogne. Piaget’s Rose Garden

Patron of both the rose and the gardens that cultivate it, Piaget remains committed to the preservation of this graceful and seductive flower in its natural form. This commitment is reinforced in Piaget’s support of the refurbishment of the Princess Grace of Monaco Rose Garden, originally planted in 1984 in honour of Prince Rainier’s wife. This idyllic garden located in Fontvieille has been reopened to the public on June 15, 2014.

Eight months of work resulted in the addition of 2,500 new roses thanks to a 1500sqm expansion to accommodate new varieties for the enjoyment of visitors, many of whom travel from all corners of the world to admire these magnificent flowers.

For the first edition of the International Rose Competition of Monaco saw the Maison creating a trophy in its workshops reflecting the stylistic elements of the Piaget Rose jewellery collection. The award doubled up as a piece of fine jewellery in rose gold (30.4g), set with a precious diamond pistil (0.5 ct). When it is not worn as a brooch or pendant, the intricate flower can be clipped onto a stem handcrafted from amaranth wood by a Swiss sculptor and artist. This prized set is presented to the winner of the contest in a triptych case decorated with rose motifs.

Mannequins were positioned throughout the room, dressed in Boux Avenue products so that guests could experience Boux Avenue’s beautifully designed lingerie, nightwear and swimwear first hand.

The summer capsule collection includes a selection of items that represent DKNY’s striking colour palette and key looks for the season. The shoot beautifully captures the thematic quality and aesthetic vision of the collection with each individual look reflecting DKNY’s penchant for functionality, style and innovation. The accessories which include trendy bags and clutches in a variation of bold and neutral colours, together with the striking urban inspired hair and makeup (hot red lips with winged eyeliner) further enhance the harmony between DKNY’s urban chic image and the region’s culture.

Here Comes The Sun This summer, global fashion house Bebe presents a gorgeous collection of sensual, summery looks inspired by provocative Mediterranean themes. As part of the summer 2014 Collection, the new line boasts Bebe’s signature party wear, formal looks, active wear and the introduction of swimwear in the region. With its sleeker and cleaner lines, the new evian bottle uses transparency to celebrate its natural mineral water contents. The bottle dons a ‘label-less’ look. Its front features a simplified, elegant reduction of the previous logo design – a panorama of mountains which celebrates the water’s source in a corner of the French Alps. This region is protected by the farming community to ensure that evian water maintains its pure, natural form.

The bottle’s simple shape and beveled mountain ridges echo the source of the water.

The brand’s story is told on the back of the bottle, and ‘evian’ is carved into the base as a playful design touch.

Additional formats are set to debut in the following months.

The collection’s colour palette is ‘INTENSE’, flaunting tie dye, bright colours, black on black and mixed shades of white. From Khloe Kardashian to J. Lo, today’s must-have hair colour trend is Ombre, tells Lydia Moustakime, Senior Stylist at Sisters Beauty Lounge in Dubai Mall. “Basically Ombre is the look that starts darker at the crown and gets progressively lighter going downwards towards the ends of the hair,” she tells. Ombre can be done using several techniques but the most popular at the moment is the Bronde technique. “This is the hottest summer hair trend but unlike Ombre, has a few strands weaved in-between to break the contrast between light and dark,” she explains, adding that the Ombre colouring technique is actually very versatile and can suit any complexion and can be done in a huge variety of colours and colour combinations. It is also extremely low maintenance and grows out beautifully well. “We have clients requesting dark blonde on the crown and lighter ash blonde going downwards; that is hugely popular

right now,” she says, however the warmer colours are not too popular.

And because colours can be played with and looks can be completely customised, each client can walk away with a completely unique look, from red carpet glamorous to beachy sun kissed and relaxed. “Basically if a client wants to look tan and golden, we can work with warmer shades but if she prefers to cool her look down and look paler, we will use cooler shades which are what is huge here at the moment,” she says. Also once your hair is lightened, she advises strongly that your eyebrows should also match and be lifted accordingly with the shade of your hair or it will look completely unnatural.

According to Moustakime, wavy, soft and feminine hair styles are hugely hot right now. “Many women these days are requesting glamorous looks that involve rollers and blow drying for a bouncy, larger than life look,” she says and haircuts are more about texturising and layering to give shape and volume.

Shampoo and C onditioners

Most hairdressers agree that it’s worth investing in good quality shampoo and conditioner, especially if you have coloured hair. Professional products have more intensive ingredients which is why they are more expensive, but you also have to remember that you need to use less of the product as they are extremely concentrated.

When choosing a shampoo and conditioner, it is important to focus on the most pressing issue concerning you at the time.

Moustakime advises to shampoo your hair around three to four times a week, not daily as this will increase the sebum on your scalp and can cause oiliness and scalp irritations.

“Dry shampoos are great because they can help you in a rush and give you the quick –fix your hair may need,” she says.

Female war reporter for Al Aan TV, JenanMoussa, tells AW what it is like to witness history happens before her eyes, and what privilege it gives to share such to millions of people. Here’s our exclusive interview with the lady who threads the dangerous zones.

T

he young pretty little thing that was donning a beautiful summer dress when we met did not look like a war reporter to us.

She was fresh, bubbly and full of life. So different from the television persona we expected her to be – so different from her image as the first and only reporter who managed to obtain the burial pictures of former dictator Muamar Ghadaffi.

a different sense of the word ‘travel’. If having had to illegally break into borders for more than twenty times were part of traveling, then yes, she’s been onto it still.

“Dubai is a rehabilitation center for me,” Jenna says with a smile.“I try to manage my sanity from every trip whenever I come back to this city. It sorts of takes me back to a normal, safe, happy environment. It’s difficult though. For the first week I’m back, I don’t talk to anyone. I help myself get back the balance I need. There were times that I felt guilty, you know. With all the invites and food I indulge with here, the thought of those people I met like the super skinny Somali children, I would really think a lot about how I do things. But at the end of the day, I need to detach myself, and find to disconnect. Otherwise, I would lose it.”

In Syria, she reported directly from the war zones of Aleppo, and even survived bombing raid by Syrian army as buildings around her collapsed. Jenan recalls,“It was emotionally devastating. The building we were hiding from in that old center of Aleppo was filled with one hundred plus people who were screaming with cries for help. We couldn’t get out. There was no electricity, no water supply. We were stuck there for two weeks with bare necessities.

At that point in time, I realised that being in the front line is about living to tell the story. We managed to get out of it alive.”

Passionate and committed, the charming Jenan forgets everything when she’s doing horse riding believes, and she swims, dances and leads a very active sporty lifestyle during normal circumstances. She used to love traveling, but having had the chance to follow her passion gives her

Indeed, being in the frontline is no joke.

Since she’s given the opportunity to go out in the field, the Al Aan correspondent has been a voice and witness of numerous groundbreaking news especially of the so-called Arab Spring.

“Yet, the images and voices of the people who were with me during those helpless times were something. There was this special child who was shouting ‘Mama, Mama’ all the time. There was Abdullah, a paralyzed man who couldn’t move but who could understand what’s happening around, who appeared so weak without his medical machine that

needed electricity to work. These stories of survival are what journalists should live to tell,” Jenan continues.

Indeed the underground experience that led her not to shower for two weeks got retained in Jenan’s memory like a moment of truth. But that was just one of many overwhelming situations she encountered in the frontline for the past four years of being in Al Aan TV, and covering the major uprisings in the Middle East. As a prelude to her job as a crisis reporter, Jenan already covered the 2006 summer war in Lebanon.She also discovered a gruesome video of a Pakistani woman being stoned to death by the Taliban.Her work brought her also from Somali refugee camps in Kenya to the compound of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.She also reported from Timbuktu,

And, Jenan also covered the 2012 attack on the American diplomatic embassy in Benghazi, Libya.

One of the highlights of her career, she would say, is having had the opportunity to report and share the first burial images of the late Libyan dictator, MuamarGhaddafi. At that time, she was out and about Libya, roaming with rebels from town to town during the long desert war. Not knowing that she would be led standing 5 centimeters away from the dead Ghadaffi. With all her journalistic instincts, she managed to capture the moment clearly and firstly. Without doubt, Jenan’s passion for journalism has resulted in many scoopsof which international channels such as ABC, BBC and Reuters had picked up.

Other than the breaking news she shares to the world, Jenan has also been a great voice of war-torn Syria where she tried to highlight the enormous human suffering of the Syrian population. Having been noted

by Washington Post as one of the Twitter accounts to follow to better understand what’s happening in Syria, Jenan has taken into such social media channel to share her stories in a wider scope and audience.

Jenan explains,“I’m not an activist but I try to help. Coming from those wartorn areas, I feel like it’s rather unfair for them to suffer. Since I am very active on Twitter, I use it to tell the needs of some of the people I met. Like for

example this Syrian family of whom five children need wheelchairs. I ‘tweeted’ the need, and practically minutes after I did that, people from the US and Qatar were sending support for them. Another case was this little Syrian born in a refugee tent. I also ‘tweeted’ about this wonderful life coming out in an age of war, and again a Kuwaiti family promised to provide help and adopt the kid until he is 18 so he would be raised properly.”

Quite rewarding for someone who is only lending her voice to these less fortunate beings, Jenan finds great and immediate feedback from her thousands of followers in social media. She says,“I believe a lot of people empathise with each other. There are so many people out there who want to help.”

There are definitely two sides to the story – her difficulties and rewards to being a crisis and roving reporter. But Jenan’s story has a third face. And, that is her being a woman crisis and roving reporter.

She says,“I totally respect Al Aan TV for giving me this opportunity. I did not feel any sort of discrimination being a woman assigned in the field. You don’t see a lot of Arabic media that give opportunities to women, so for that Al Aan’s effort is

very commendable. Although I personally think that not too many women push for what they want, they don’t impose enough to get out there.”

Thankful for the break that Al Aan Tv provided her, Jenan shares,“Al Aan TV is more known for its lifestyle shows. The news section we have actually focuses more on human interest stories. Yet they manage to give me the opportunity to report from the war and crisis zones. I’m so lucky to have Al Aan airs my stories.”

Obviously, in a conservative Middle Eastern society, being a woman reporter in a dangerous field is quite peculiar.

How did she manage to get the yes of her family to pursue her passion? Well, she never got the yes.

“They never said yes, but I still do it,” Jenan quips with a laugh.“My father is my biggest supporter. They tend to worry of course but they don’t say no, don’t do that, but they also don’t say yes, go for that. Personally, I don’t tell them where I am assigned especially if it’s really dangerous, because they tend to worry and that brings emotional distress. They only get to know where I would be when they’d see me on Al Aan TV, and then they get to be happy knowing that I’m safe.”

ExclusivE Safety is one of the major challenges she faces by being in the dangerous war zones. Jenan tells AW,“Physical danger is the scariest thing. The bomb actually does not figure out a woman over a man, or a child over an adult. So, whether you’re a young woman doing your job in the field, you’re not being differentiated. Now being a woman adds extra challenges in this highly conservative region. One of the main challenges I faced in being a woman reporter was during my coverage in Egypt where women reporters and activitists were publicly harassed and raped, even. At that time, I tried my best to protect myself.”

Recalling further instances when she had to take means beyond what she would usually do, Jenan furthers,“Back in Libya, I stayed one week in a hospital because we thought it was the safest place to hide from bombing.” Indeed, the hospital was not attacked but she had to live with all the screams, cries and sights of blood.

“In Syria, while I was waiting for one commander to come join his troops, and get the chance to interview, I stood along with the men. Wearing helmet and vest, he mistook me for being one of his troops, and kissed me. He was so surprised to realise that I was a woman.

He left, and the troops laughed after. But deep inside I was so scared, praying he wouldn’t kill me.”

But being a woman in the field is not all hazardous. There are good sides to exploring the streets in a feminine body (dressed modestly). Jenan continues, “A woman’s perspective is somehow different from men. We tend to see things differently, and in my stories, those perspectives come through. Also, not everyone can speak to Arab women because of religious reasons. That gives me an edge, I think, plus the fact that I speak the language. Being an Arabic

speaker gives me the better ability to understand what’s happening as I read things perfectly, I hear people’s opinions and I can talk to them easily.”

There is competition among fellow journalists on who would get the first scoops. But, Jenan competes to no one but herself. She aims to be her best version, wants to go international like the journalists who inspire her (Liz Ducett of BBC and Christian Amanpour of CNN), and she even recommends being a war reporter as career option. She declares, “I am just in the beginning of my career.

I plan to stay here for as long as I can.

Getting married and having children won’t stop me since I know several other journalists who are able to continue their passion in journalism yet still able to have family lives.”

journalism is to be a witness to history.

The best form of journalism, for Jenan, is to be out there in the field and live to tell story. She won’t stop in investigating and searching for answers if her stories are still developing.

She undoubtedly is one to follow. Jenan Moussa’s footsteps are slowly wandering through Middle East’s war areas, but her sturdy and committed stand will surely get her to reach her goals of international recognition.

“I look at the pictures of myself in the field and I even ask myself how I did that. I was crazy. When I’m in the field, it gets so overwhelming. I just do it,” she concludes.

Holding a diploma in Radio and Television journalism from the American University of Science and Technology in Beirut, she also studied English Literature at the Lebanese university. In 2008,Jenan won Lebanon’s GebranTueni press award.

Years after her studies, she became a handled projects and positions in various publications. It would be easier to stay in, and climb the corporate ladder by writing from the desk, but she does not find happiness in that. What motivates you?

“What motivates me is the thought that Allah has blessed me with everything a person could want: health, loving family, and food on the table. One day I’ll be facing Him and he’ll ask me that He gave me so much and what did I do with it? How long have you been engaging in charity work?

“In 1988, I went to Africa (The Gambia) for the first time, and saw first-hand a very different world from the privileged world I lived in – I was shattered by the levels of poverty and abuse we encountered. We immediately sponsored a girl from a village we visited, and made sure that she received a good education. Then when I had my own daughter in 1997, I was driven by the desire for every child in the world to grow up safe, loved and educated – just as my daughter has been.”

“Sadly, people who say and believe that ‘one person can’t make a difference’ rarely do anything much with their lives. One person can make a TREMENDOUS difference and the power of millions of people across the world doing things that make life better for others is a powerful force sweeping the world. We hear so much about wars and the bad things in life, but working with Gulf for Good has exposed me to literally hundreds of people who are doing amazing things to help others.”

Charity Dr. Houriya Kazim is a breast surgeon who runs Brest Friends, a charit y to raise awareness and educate women on breast cancer; to financially help wit h their treatment costs and to work as a support group for breast cancer patients.

How long have you been doing charity work?

“10 years ago, I rarely had women come to me just to have a check but would rather wait until they felt something wrong with their breasts. Many times, that was too late.

So, the first thing I had to address was changing the psyche of women here to be more proactive with their breast health and have regular check-ups and not to wait until something goes wrong.

Initially, the cost of cancer treatment was covered by the government for all residents, locals and expats. A couple of years ago, this changed and expats are not treated for free anymore. I found this left a significant number of women out there with no/inadequate insurance or no money to pay for their treatment which can run you upwards of AED500,000. So, we help as much as we can to make sure that everyone gets treated, not just the ones who can afford it. Then, I had many patients in my office wanting to speak to other women who had gone through similar experiences, so that is how we set up the support group, which is now in its 10th year and we meet once a month for talks, laughs and socialising.”

Can one person make a difference?

“They definitely can! The reason I chose to specialise in Breast Surgery is because I used to see, as a junior surgical intern, so many really advanced cases of breast cancer.

Once I specialised and came back to Dubai and started my awareness program and talked to ladies groups and colleagues. I have to say that, in a relatively short period of time, I now don’t see that kind of advanced disease that I used to see all those years ago. And now I do have women who come to me with nothing wrong but just wanting to be checked. That’s real progress.”

How long have you been doing charity work?

“Whilst project managing the building of the unfinished hotel in 2006 and 2007, I saw contract labourers working under extreme temperatures of over 45 degrees toiling hard to make sure deadlines were met. Although they were employees of the contracting company I decided to treat the 500 or so workforce to a sit-down lunch in the basement car park. The tears in the eyes of this labour workforce and the words of Shukran being uttered were signs of how a small gesture of care had made such a huge difference.”

How long have you been doing charity work?

“In 2005, I visited the slums in Dhaka and was so taken aback by what I saw – people carrying on with their everyday life in such extremely poor conditions. But what really made me think is that I could see an image of myself in each child and adult of how my life could have turned out if I had not been helped myself. My own mother became ill when I was two years-old and gave me to a friend to look after, but she never returned. I was raised in Portugal by a poor African immigrant who already had six of her own children. She fought hard to give me a good upbringing. Her motto was ‘if you can feed 6 you can feed 7’.

This is my inspiration. More than anything though, I saw so much potential, although they were living in extremely harsh conditions, it was clear to me that these children were bright and determined.”

Can one person make a difference?

“I don’t really think about it. I am just doing something that I believe in and that I think will make a difference, not just today but permanently. I have had help along the way from volunteers, donors and sponsors, of course I couldn’t do without them – every person who donated to our cause is ‘one person who made a difference’ because a donation can pay towards a year’s education for child. I cannot express enough how much we need donations. We received tremendous support from Right Bite over the past months and they continue to support us. They have a great system where they donate a percentage of revenue from their healthy meal plan packages to pay school fees for MCF, if more companies could do this we would have much less financial struggles and possibly educate more children.”

“Did Nelson Mandela not make a difference to South Africa’s apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation? Did Gandhi not lead India to independence and inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world? It just needs the one person to start a movement, start an action which is what I have done through my position of CEO. My take is that if I did not think of Allah’s bounty and did not appreciate him through my daily profit – seeking time, I would have lost an opportunity.

An opportunity of allowing others to understand about the principles of our lives, for the betterment of our tomorrow, and it would have been for me a sunless today of despair.”

TIPS The Reasons From flaky filled pastries and delectable sweets to fried fritters and dumplings, Lovely Ranganath, a senior nutritionist working with ‘Healthtrendz’, the healthy meal delivery initiative of the Event & Hospitality Services, Dubai World Trade Centre, explains that so many of us actually fall off the healthy eating bandwagon during Ramadan.“It’s a combination of different factors; the Holy month of Ramadan focuses a lot on being together with family, sharing family meals, inviting friends over, being invited by friends, loads of Iftar parties, and is essentially a month when women have the opportunity to display their cooking abilities,” she says.“It’s actually a proven fact that people tend to eat more than their requirement if they are offered food in large amounts and even more when sharing meals with friends and family.”

This happy scenario, she adds, encourages the tendency to fill up with their favourite food items which will undoubtedly be in abundance.“Furthermore, with the weather being extremely hot and humid during Ramadan, people are not encouraged to go out for evening walks, visit the park or beach and prefer to stay indoors, which can exacerbate their health issues,” she explains.

What to avoid It is paramount to remember that as we fast during the day, our stomach remains empty and will react somewhat differently to the foods we normally eat out of Ramadan. For example, Ranganath points out that it’s advised to avoid excessive spices as the stomach lining is sensitive post fasting.“Subjecting it to spicy food, especially at the time of breaking the fast, can potentially trigger digestive disturbances such as gas and heartburn,” she says.“Basically fried food items such as kibbeh, samosas, spring rolls, fritters and the like are really nothing but ‘empty’ calories for the body, meaning these foods have no nutritional value.”

Added to this is the fact that these kinds of foods are loaded with fat that our liver cannot process, so our bodies store

TIPS it away as fatty tissue, especially around our waist. Another reason to avoid these foods is that these take a toll on our digestive tract and is one of the common causes of acidity. “Also remember that waking up for Suhour becomes difficult as the digestion of fried foods interferes with our sleep cycle as the body needs to put in more effort to break down the fats which is a long process,” she explains and in fact, a lack of proper sleep is also one of the reason people gain weight as this interferes with the hormonal balance in the body.“Also if the above fried items are ready-made and packaged then the sodium content in these would be even higher,” says Ranganath, and most people may not drink up on their water which causes water retention to our already dehydrated bodies making one feel bloated and uncomfortable after Iftar.

What to Consume Fresh fruits, advises Ranganath, are a definite yes as this offers a great way to replenish all the electrolytes lost through the day during long hours of fasting.

Ranganath elaborates, “My personal favourite, which is quite simple but takes care of your cravings, is a delicious nutrient rich dessert made from one ripe avocado, one to two tablespoons of raw nut butter or tahini paste, four to five ripe dates and one to two teaspoons of raw unsweetened cocoa powder; blended to make a dessert that will resemble a mousse.” This, she adds, is delicious and from just a few teaspoons, will fill you up and make you say goodbye to your ‘sinful’ unhealthy cravings.

Another healthy suggestion is the latest Air Fryers; “These are a great alternative where one wins the battle between taste and health and I encourage people to buy these amazing kitchen appliances which can be best used during Ramadan,” she says.

ith so many things happening in your life during Ramadan, it can get quite difficult to keep your fitness regimen in check. You have to meet family and friends, change your daily routines, and most importantly, fast from sunrise until sunset – all factors that can deter you from following through your fitness plans during the Holy Month.

We sought the help of Nathan Brown,

Stay Hydrated As it’s generally coming into the hotter season, keeping hydrated is important for everyone whether you are fasting or not.

Plain water is sometimes not enough so you may need an electrolyte drink to replenish the sweat factor lost especially

if you have been fasting. In addition, hydrate before, during and after exercise – it doesn’t necessarily need to be fluids,you can also source the necessary hydration from fruits as an alternative.

Vary Your Training Your training needs variation during Ramadan. If it’s cardio training, do a combination of body weight exercises and equipment-assisted exercises. For example, perform body weight squats (50 reps), a treadmill run (Level 10+ 400

meters), body weight burpees (50 Reps), rowing machine (Level 10+ 400 meters) and complete the cycle four times. This will definitely burn the unwanted calories away.

For those who are fasting, complete only 25 reps, and run 200 meters for both the treadmill and the rowing machine, adjusting variation in speeds.

Resistance Training Is Imperative Along with cardio training (TIP 2) –

remain vigilant in obtaining resistance training throughout Ramadan. This could be in the water, in the gym lifting weights or at home walking up a flight of stairs. Either way you must look at resistance to maintain muscle tone and conditioning. The process I would recommend is attend a TUFF, Bodypump or XFIT class before or after Iftar.

An alternative option is combine these weighted exercises and complete five sets in total. Station 1: Bar squats combined with Body weight squats (20 reps each) Station 2: Push-ups combined with Bar Chest press (20 reps each), Station 3: Sumo High Row combined with a Dead LIFT (20 reps each) Station 4: Thruster combined with a Overhead lunge ( 20 reps each) Station 5: Sit ups, shoulder touching floor and hands reaching to touch feet (20 reps), Plank holds for (20 seconds) – complete five sets.

It’s All In The Timing Most government and private companies have shortened hours over Ramadan – this means you have the chance to train

and exercise well before Iftar. It also means your timing to burn calories can be effective and more efficient resultswise. How? EPOC stands for ‘exercise post oxygen consumption’.

In other words, when you have exercised you will keep burning calories after because your metabolism is still in an active state. Remember the key is timing your workout right so you stay in the caloric working zone even after you have completed your workout and enjoying Iftar at the same time.

Don’t Lose Your Motivation, Keep Moving!

During Ramadan, we tend to lose the energy or just can’t be bothered. If you use the escalators or travelators, keep walking. Don’t just stand there waiting for it to take you to the top as it breeds laziness. FAQ What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Since Islam uses a lunar calendar, Ramadan is not on a fixed Gregorian date each year. Rather, the month typically moves ahead around 10 days year on year. The significance of Ramadan is that this is the month in which the Quran was sent down, as evidenced in the Quranic verse, “Ramadan is the (month) in which the Quran was sent down, as a guide to mankind and a clear guidance and judgement (so that mankind will distinguish from right and wrong)”.

Why fast in Ramadan?

There are 5 pillars of Islam, with fasting being one of them. Contrary to what’s often thrown around as the reason for fasting – to let Muslims have a taste of the ‘less privileged life’ – fasting was prescribed by Allah so that first and foremost Muslims can attain piety and righteousness. Every other result of fasting – and there are many advantageous ones – are secondary.

How long do Muslims have to fast?

From dusk till dawn, as per the Quranic verse, “...and eat and drink until the white thread (of light) becomes distinct to you from the black thread (night/darkness) of the dawn. Then strictly observe the fast until/to the night”. Scholars have granted some countries special exemptions, such as those with round the clock daylight or round the clock nightfall. In these cases, the Islamic scholars recommend two options: either follow the timings of the closest country that has proper sunrise and sunset, or follow a Middle Eastern country, particularly KSA. If you are living in a country where you can clearly distinguish between day and night, many scholars believe that you are required to fast from the break of dawn to sunset

regardless of the length of day.

Does every Muslim have to fast?

Every Muslim that has reached puberty is obligated to fast. The only exceptions are those who are sick or are travelling.

This is found in the Quranic verse,“And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, (let him fast the same) number of other days. Allah desires ease for you; He does not desire hardship for you; and (He desires) that you should complete the period.” Children who have not reached the age of puberty are not obligated to fast, though they are recommended to be trained to do so early. One common method is to let them fast half a day as training.

Menstruating women are not permitted to fast and would have to ‘pay back’ the days they missed by fasting once they have finished their menses.

What is zakah?

One of the components within Ramadan is zakah al-fitr. This is essentially an obligatory alms-giving at the end of the month by every Muslim. This was related by the Porphet’s companion Abdullah bin ‘Abbas when he said,“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah praise and send peace and blessings upon him, obligated Zakah al-Fitr to serve as purification for the one fasting for any vain speech or indecent behaviour; and also to serve as food for the indigent. It is best for Zakah al-Fitr to be given to the poor and indigent.”

How are Ramadan and Eid determined?

Traditionally, the method in determining Ramadan and subsequently Eid, is by visibly spotting the crescent moon which signifies the start of a new month. The Islamic calendar is of either 29 or 30 days and Muslims would go out for ‘moonsighting’ on the 29th of each month. If the crescent moon is sighted, then the next day

is Ramadan, or Eid. If not, then the month is completed to 30 days following which the new month begins. In some countries, Ramadan and Eid are now based purely on astronomical calculations and very rarely do these countries follow the moon-sighting tradition verbatim.

What is the importance of the last 10 days of Ramadan?

Anyone living in a Muslim country can sense the increased vigour and determination of Muslims during the last 10 nights of Ramadan, especially for the voluntary night prayers known as ’taraweeh’. The reason for the buzz is that within these last 10 days of Ramadan lies a special night: Laylat Al Qadr. Any worship on this night is counted as better than worship of a thousand months. The Prophet PBUH said,“Whoever stays up (in prayer and remembrance of Allah) on the Night of Qadr, fully believing (in Allah’s promise of reward) and hoping to seek reward, he shall be forgiven for his past sins.”The fact that the exact moment of the night is unknown, except for the vague fact that it’s in the last 10 days, results in Muslims striving harder all throughout the last 10 nights.

What is the significance of eating dates in Ramadan?

The Prophet PBUH advised us to break our fasts with dates, or the second best option is by drinking plain water. Furthermore, as of late, more and more findings have revealed just how beneficial the humble dates can be, especially for people who are observing fasts. These benefits include easy digestion, satiety, fibre, allowing the right juices to be secreted after a whole day of fasting, etc.

What breaks the fast?

Cultures have added unnecessary instances whereby one’s fast would be broken.

Fresh start With a fresh new look, new menu, new staff and renewed optimism, Eric Kayser reopened its doors to much fanfare. Is it finally their time to shine?

I

t’s sad when a well-known French culinary institution inches towards obscurity, which was exactly what was happening to Eric Kayser in Dubai. Though much-loved around the world, you could sense that the specialty outlet here in Dubai was being overlooked even by the great masses of human traffic in The Dubai Mall. The tired dÊcor, uninspiring food menu and an overall lack of charm, was in the end too much for even its delectable pastries and breads to overcome.

It needed a reboot, and it got one.

Now under new management, the outlet was given a much-needed facelift, along with sweeping changes in personnel, including the chefs. The changes seemed to have made a positive impact, on both

staff and patrons alike, and what was once a barren restaurant is has now reached its busiest best.

The new spruced up place features an ‘outdoor’ seating area, ala Paris style, perfect for diners to people-watch. Inside, the restaurant has opted for a more contemporary approach, with clean, fresh colours. Gone are the dark woods of the previous franchise, replaced by bright orange cushy seats coupled with minimalist chairs that seat you comfortably. Fancy light fixtures, a proper bricked wall and artsy photographs complete the new look. What they have retained however is the popular pastry section on the outside of the main dining area, where sinful cakes and pastries can be marvelled at by passers-by and ultimately, enticing them in.

Only the freshest ingredients are used, whereby even the flour is imported from France to make their breads. The menu suggests that Eric Kayser is more of a diner than a full-blown restaurant; standard breakfast fare, lots of sandwiches and salads, as well as pizza thrown in for good measure.

We started our dinner with the classic French onion soup and Steak Parisien, which is grilled slice tenderloin mixed in with mustard, onions, cheese and tomatoes.

We’ve been bowled over by the simple French onion soup before and this time is no different. The soup is sweet and silky in texture, served in a pot of hard bread.

That combination, added with the melted cheese, just puts you in the right mood for a flavoursome dining experience. The Steak Parisien meanwhile is cooked slightly medium well and individually, the flavours are quite sublime but when you eat it as one whole dish, some flavours are lost while others are put to the fore. For instance, while the mustard is just a thin spread, the distinct zing from it hides the taste of the melted emmental cheese, and dare I say, also overpowering the beef itself, which is a pity. Perhaps it would have tasted like

a more coherent dish if the mustard was lessened, or removed altogether, in which case there would be less of a kick, but other flavours would have their chance to shine as well.

For mains, we were recommended the house’s signature, and most popular, dish: Poulet Au Pistache. This is basically grilled chicken breast topped with pistachio cream sauce and served together with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes. You would not immediately connect French cuisine with pistachios and this is sort of a wild card and it’s a bit of a hit and miss to be honest. The chicken was expertly cooked as it was juicy and tender. The sauce has a surprisingly subtle flavour and the flavour of the pistachios was not as strong as we had expected it to be, which is not necessarily a bad thing given that some flavours are better left suppressed and left to linger.

This dish is the exact opposite of the Steak Parisien; each element when fused with the rest created a harmony that is delicious, with the chicken soaking up all the cream sauce, leaving your taste buds in delight.

Next we had the Alfredo Au Poulet Et Champignon, spaghetti in cream sauce with grilled chicken, fresh mushrooms and basil.

Yes, we ordered another cream sauce dish but there are certain dishes that can give you an indication of the type of kitchen that is operating behind, and whether the chefs can execute a simple traditional dish well.

So we chose this as the benchmark. Our pasta was cooked well, and the mushrooms actually tasted like they were sautéed first and not just dumped in. Overall, the dish was lovely, though a little more salt would probably be more towards most people’s liking.

The star of the night, not surprisingly, was a dessert, particularly the Pain Perdu, a vanilla and brown sugar pan-seared brioche topped with vanilla ice-cream and caramel.

Just the sound of that is pleasing and once you put that soft bread into your mouth,

all the world’s problems seem to just melt away. The brioche lends a sophistication to the dish while the caramel and the vanilla brings you back to your childhood, to a time when everything sweet was heavenly.

This all results in a dish that is truly divine.

And the portion size was good too, enough to really savour every little morsel that you scoop.

The other dessert we tried was Berry Berry Crepe, crepe filled with cream cheese, and served with mixed berries and creme anglaise. This is a combination of sweet and salty, though more sweet than salty as there was nowhere near enough cream cheese to balance all that sweetness. For anyone with a sweet tooth, this is your dish right here.

And if you’re still in the mood for more desserts, just walk over to the pasty section and indulge, indulge, indulge!

After a tumultuous time, Eric Kayser has been given a new lease of life. The second wind looks promising as loyal customers to the brand have embraced this new offering, along with new patrons that are attracted to the brand name and surely after their dining experience, the food. Diners kept streaming into the outlet while we were there and considering that it was a weekday yet almost completely full, it bodes well for the future of Eric Kayser in Dubai.

Getting to Bicester Village is an event in itself but once there, you will understand what the fuss is all about; rows and rows of luxury shopping haven.

From brands like Prada to Burberry to Coach, Bicester Village is every woman’s shopping desire come true, where the high-end brands go for bargain prices.

And that too, before claiming a further tax back.

Styled as little houses, each shop is filled with people looking to get the best deals they can find. Though the styles may not always be the latest, the prestige and quality are always guaranteed. Every luxury handbag-toting woman should make Bicester Village a must-visit place the next time they come to London.

The downside though is, unless you’re willing to pay almost USD350 for your own chauffeur service to Bicester Village and back, you’re going to have to take the train, or the designated coach, both of which will take some considerable time. Thus, it’s better to pen this down as a whole day event.

Portobello Market

The already famous market made even more famous by the movie Notting Hill and its ‘blue door’ house. Opened Friday to Sunday, this is one of those typical English markets that has been extremely commercialised. Nevertheless, you can still find a whole lot here. There are your food stalls selling the freshest ingredients from vegetables and fruits to meat, antique stores and stalls and many other kinds of shops selling knick knacks like old maps and photographs or old records. There are surprisingly many shoe shops here as well, most of them selling sneakers and such. Antiques range from your normal old cameras and books to memorabilia and really fine China. So bargain your way to the best deals.

If you love your tea time and cakes, there’s a specialty shop that sells gorgeous Royal Albert pieces. Best of all, most of the proper shops will offer VAT returns. There are also vintage shops selling pre-loved luxury goods and those are your best bet to find an authentic luxury piece because unless you know your high-end stuff well, it’s easy to be sold a good knockoff at one of the stalls.

Spitalfields Market

Located in East London, Spitalfields Market is a London icon, in operation for centuries.

The site was a Roman cemetery before it became a convent which has a hospital attached to it. And that is where the word Spitalfields originated from; the last bit of ‘hospital’. The market started out as a food market in 1682 where people sold mainly fish and vegetables. In the 1920s, it was the biggest food market in London. However, as time went on, it became a victim of its own success and in 1991, massive overcrowding forced vendors to just up and leave. Now, a revamped market under a new roof was opened and it’s reported that 25,000 people visit the everyday market per week.

Complementing the food and vegetables market are the antiques and clothes market, ensuring that the buzz and spirit of the old market remains alive.

The British institution with a lot of tradition.

Supposedly the place that introduced England to the escalator, Harrods has survived a fire, rebuilding and takeovers and yet is still one of the most iconic destinations in the city. Now owned by Qatari Holdings, Harrods is an upmarket department store in Knightsbridge that goes floors up, with each level dedicated to specific sections. At the ground floor is where you find your luxury items, for both men and women. Lovers of LV, Gucci, Chanel and the likes will be treated to whole array of products, most of which are from the very latest collections. Move upwards and you will find everything else from high-end homeware to suitcases. On the upper floor is the Tea Room, a little dining abode where you can indulge in some traditional English tea and cakes.

The food is lovely and the cake tiers are enormous but the chocolate cakes come in really tiny bite-sized pieces. So be sure to order more. Also on that same floor is the Harrods shop where you can get all your Harrods paraphernalia and souvenirs, including the popular Harrods ‘shopping’ bag. Also not to be missed out on are the Harrods chocolate-covered nuts; simple but addictive. Totally worth all the extra calories!

Where to Café Royal Once a trendy coffee house that serves the who’s who of London’s social elite, Café Royal is now a luxurious hotel located along Regent Street. Modern contemporary rooms marry the old charm of the hotel. For instance, the elevators use a clock-like pointer to indicate the floors, just like how it was in the old days. While the hotel serves up modern amenities, the café itself has been restored to its former glory, replete with the famous gold-plated walls. Step onto the rooftop terrace and you will find sweeping views of the London skyline with some of its more famous landmarks visible in the distance. Directly below is the sightseeing spot Piccadilly Circus, a place where it’s always buzzing with activity, with tourists and locals alike.

t’s easy to spot the Royal Rose hotel, one of Abu Dhabi’s latest 5-star city hotel; its French grandeur and intricacies on the building façade seems almost surreal in the midst of the ordinary, and may we say drabby, buildings that surround it. The roofline, the windows, all scream French and baroque. But if anyone is under the illusion that the outside is just a gimmick, then a surprise awaits when they step inside.

Opulence. That is the only word that can describe how the lobby of the Royal Rose looks like. From the round twin pillars bathed in flowery painting to the huge crystal chandelier that hangs majestically in the centre to the French décor and baroque influence, it takes a bit of time for the visitor to soak everything in. There is so much detail involved in every corner of the lobby alone that every single look brings about a new discovery. The red and gold colour scheme really drives home the point that you’ve entered into old European baroque territory and all you want to do is explore more. The flooring is exquisite with patterns that reflect artisan culture.

It truly does feel like you’ve stepped into King Louis’s main hall. And all around the hotel, from the lobby to the diners to the gym, you can find red flowers everywhere to further punch those gold accents.

We say ‘baroque’ a lot in this review and yet we feel that it’s still not enough to fully capture and describe what the hotel offers.

It’s easy to be awestruck and forget that you’re in the desert. Intricately-designed winding staircases lead you to the eateries within the hotel or downwards to the business centre. There are no ramps in the lobby so there are two elevators with limited service that brings you from the lobby to either the mezzanine or the lower floors. There are six main elevators, the kinds that have the floor options on the outside. It may seem fancy but these kinds of lifts have its own restrictions, none more so than if you wish to change floors midway while you’re inside.

The hotel features 355 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, including 112 Boutique Suites, 20 Luxury Suites and one Royal Suite. Elegance and comfort are key elements of the hotel’s elaborate and arty interiors. The corridors to the rooms are decked out in grand carpets and paintings hang off the walls. Even the wallpaper used adds to that rustic, aged but authentic feel of European sophistication. Walk into the

room and you will be greeted with such decorative indulgence that your head will be spinning in the baroque-ness of it all.

French mirrors, vintage-looking wardrobe, cosy armchairs, French lamps, and more, all there for you to immerse yourself in full culture. There is also a French balcony though the view of residential rooftops and satellite dishes is not quite Parisian.

The hotel is 19-storeys high with the swimming pools on the rooftop. The pools are quite a letdown; tired-looking, no views and an overall sense of afterthought rather than one whose design was incorporated into the initial hotel layout. The spa on the other hand was more than adequate with separate areas for both men and women.

Each of these areas offer their own Jacuzzi section and treatment rooms. The gym is decked in modern equipment and for a hotel of this size, is pretty well-stocked and for the convenience of the female of the species, there is a direct door to the women’s changing area from the gym.

Elsewhere, the six banquet rooms and conference facilities feature state-ofthe-art conference equipment to cater to every need and the staff will ensure to accommodate clients’ specific needs from pre-planning, set-up and arranging for technical support and other services from within the hotel or third parties.

Service-wise, the staff was friendly and eager to help though a little unsure. Again, this is nothing that can’t be improved over time as they get more familiar with the hotel and its inner workings. However, for a 5-star hotel, perhaps it might be a good idea to hire a greeter at the door to make every visitor feel more welcome instead of just finding their own feet, and way, to the reception area.

Eating options The hotel houses three restaurants; Brasserie, a café of sorts, Barocco, the fine dining outlet, and Printannia, the all-day dining option. Brasserie offers a good range of light finger food to fill you up between meals, like the chicken trio and such. And for your sweet tooth, there is a range of desserts including some yummy cheesecakes. Décor-wise, the French theme flows seamlessly into the café, with gold accents and plush seating. On the opposite side of the lobby is Barocco, almost a carbon copy of Brasserie in terms of layout and not too dissimilar in terms of décor as well. Unfortunately, Barocco was not in full operation during our stay and thus we

could not sample the menu.

We were however offered the menu from Printannia. Printannia offers a good mix of dishes from Middle Eastern to European and even Asian. We started our dinner with Smoked Salmon, some Shrimp Wontons and crunchy spring rolls. The spring roll had a bit of a surprise to it when it came served with a side of barbecue sauce.

It may seem a little unorthodox but it somehow worked, or perhaps it was just something new rather than the tried and tested sweet chilli combination.

For mains, we ordered the quartet of Wagyu fillet of beef, Roasted Grouper, Mushroom Tagliatelle and Crab & Prawn ravioli. The ravioli was flavourful, with a very generous amount of tomato sauce.

It would have looked prettier if they had added some garnishings on top, be it some greens or even grated cheese as it looked a bit dull. Thankfully, all that was more than made up by its great taste.

The Wagyu Beef was on the dry side even though we had asked for it to be mediumwell. Here again the presentation is lacking with practically a bare plate with a chunk of meat, a dollop of mash and the sauce poured over the meat. There was even like a tiny drizzle or drop of an unknown sauce just to perhaps add variety but the amount was not enough to influence the dish, visually or taste-wise. The Roasted Grouper was a nice surprise; two thick fillets of juicy fish marinated in some herbs and served

with veggies and a seafood sauce. The sauce was strong and complemented the fish brilliantly. Lastly, the tagliatelle was a good portion size, enough to be shared between two people. The pasta was wellcooked and the sauce creamy and thick but there were only three visible mushrooms on the whole plate, which in the absence of everything else like meat, provided the only solace from the rich pasta and sauce.

Nevertheless, as a whole, the pasta was well-received by all.

We finished the night with dessert; the traditional knafeh. Anyone who follows our reviews would know that we have put the knafeh from Al Feras Sweets on a pedestal and all others would have to reach that lofty height. This one from Printannia didn’t, though to be fair, it was a quite different interpretation of the dish, one which we have never encountered before.

The cheese was soft and not chewy and it was served together with a cream sauce, which balances out the taste quite well. So despite not being quite there, we do have to give props to the chefs for invention and at least daring to take the humble dish in a different direction.

The Royal Rose is a sight to behold, especially at night. It is still undergoing its soft opening and many tweaks and minor adjustments have to be made. But once everything has settled down and the hotel runs in full swing, it can be a treasure, one that offers a unique experience that is unlike the city has ever seen.

Yet the morning sun was another sight to behold. Waking up to a marvelous view of the Grand Canal, and munching healthy sumptuous options from the Club Lounge’s buffet was worth remembering.

Precious moments of bonding with family would happen by the beachside and the pool, as well as in the spacious Ritz Kids Club where children would be safe to stay while parents get some time away.

Afterwards, we went on to the room that appeared to be a massive one-bedroom suite, complete with baby amenities and balloons! The room was perfect for families seeking relaxation (as well as travelling mothers or fathers who would need some time to do work). For someone who requires divine bathrooms, I would say that the room’s bath area was more than what I expected. I could stay in there the whole day, soaking myself in the grand-looking tub.

But we had to get out, eat and explore the property. The first night’s dinner at the Asian restaurant Li Jiang was amazing. The interior was wonderfully thought of – with the open kitchen where chefs displayed expertise in tossing noodles in the wok, and the masterful lamps and walls that made the restaurant as admirable as the delicious food.

Meanwhile, walking back to the room at night was something we’d recommend doing at The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. The property, well secured and well lighted, was beaming with fascinating lights, and definitely an enticing view to marvel at while walking

Other than these, we decided to go the hotel’s neighbouring landmarks.

Thankfully, the hotel launched a shuttle service that eased our worries of getting lost again. Complimentary water and land shuttle services enable guests to explore the picturesque Al Maqta’a creek and surrounding areas in ultimate comfort.

The Grand Mosque lies within walking distance from the hotel but can also be reached by the luxury shuttle bus leaving from the hotel’s main entrance every hour from 9am until late.

The guests can also take advantage of the luxury boat services departing from resort’s private jetty and making a total of four stops along Al Maqta’a creek, including the bustling Souk Qaryat Al Beri – a lively market with souvenir stalls and alfresco dining options. The boat ride lends a wonderful photo opportunity providing a breathtaking backdrop of the hotel and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at sunset.

And, before we bade goodbye to the property, we indulged ourselves in the delightful delights of Arabic cuisine at Mijana. The restaurant, another beauty that The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal boasts, was a house of the best Lebanese food we’ve tasted in the country. Yes, to say that we’re stuffed with totally scrumptious choices would be understatement.

At the end of our stay though, we collected tons of pictures and memories of the luxurious elegance of The Ritz and the cultural sights neighbouring it. But more than these, we had experienced the best stay because of the perfect hospitality provided by its friendly and efficient staff.

From the drivers to the doormen to the reception, restaurant and corporate staff, they treated us not just as guests but as their family. Aside from everything else, this marked the difference – and this is the reason why we will surely return.

But, frankly speaking, the recently opened Sofitel Dubai Downtown’s spa gave us a few unique attributes not present in its siblings. From the interior decors to the spa treatments, we’re amazed at how this newbie is doing.

The spa Conveniently located in the heart of Downtown Dubai (practically steps away from the Metro station and minutes away from The Dubai Mall), the Sofitel Dubai Downtown offers comfort as well as amazing views of Burj Khalifa and its neighbouring skyscrapers.

The experience We guess we came to the spa at the best time; spent from rigorous crossfit training, a workout session that’s highly intense, our bodies were totally in need of a good old massage. After the initial discussion with (and recommendation of) our expert therapist, we decided to try the deep tissue massage.

As we entered the quiet pathway to the treatment rooms, we managed to take a quick peek of the whole spa. Indeed offering serene environment to its guests, So SPA also does not lack with functional

amenities. The bathrooms and toilets are very clean, while the luxurious treatment rooms are like the stunning hotel rooms you don’t want to ever leave And always in touch with our love for anything pastel, we loved the colour palette used in the treatment rooms. We thought they added to the cheerful vibe of the spa.

Going down to the massage business, we were delighted to have been lying down on the massage bed for the next 60 minutes; an indulging and relaxing moment. It was an overwhelming one-hour session, maybe because the sore body badly needed it. Yet nonetheless, the expert therapist was able to combine various techniques of as well as the aromatic scents of the oil, resulting in a spa high.

It was the perfect escape to the tiring, busy buzzing city life. In the end, we agreed that whether a spa-goer wants to indulge in an ultimate spa experience or just needs that quick fix to ease the tension of a busy day, So SPA helps one to unwind in a relaxing paradise in the heart of Dubai’s vibrant downtown.

Hot New Travel Destinations Looking for new places to go to from the Middle East? Read on, and learn about these buzzing tourism spots…

Poland The Polish Tourist Organisation has declared its intention to promote the country as a new travel destination for UAE residents. A country with a vast diversity of architecture, historical monuments, castles and palaces open to public, it has 13 UNESCO sites, some of which compose not only of one building, but whole city complexes, such as the Old Towns of Warsaw, Krakow, Torun, and Zamość. Warsaw, the Polish capital, was rebuilt by its own inhabitants after World War II from complete ruins and in consequence, its painstakingly reconstructed Old Town was put on the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites.

Thanks to the diversity of landscapes, Poland is an attractive destination for active tourism. It is a dream come true for water sports enthusiasts thanks to the long coast line, thousands of lakes, and many rivers and channels.

It is also a winter sports destination. Poland also offers a large number of golf courses and bike and trekking trails in all kinds of terrain with good conditions for alpinism due to the diverse types of mountains.

Aside from being a paradise for those interested in culture, as there is an endless list of various cultural festivals, music competitions and outdoor events, Poland has also became a major spot of foreigners travelling abroad for medical purposes. USA Brand USA, the public-private partnership responsible for launching the United States’ nationally coordinated tourism marketing effort, promotes a total of 20 US tourism, hotel and travel organisations including Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport, Golden Travel USA, Greater Miami and the Beaches, Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, NYC & Company, Universal Orlando Resort and Visit Florida.

The increased interest in wooing Middle Eastern visitors to the United States follows an increasing number of direct flights to the US by Arabian Gulf carriers and the establishment of preclearance at Abu Dhabi International Airport which is expected to facilitate ease of entry for visitors to the US. 2014 has also already seen additional flights come on line with Saudi Airlines launching to Los Angeles, Emirates Airlines to Boston, Qatar Airways to Philadelphia and Etihad Airways expanding its New York flights to a daily service.

In addition to new direct air services between the Gulf and the United States, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility has been established at Abu Dhabi International Airport Terminal 3 as a purposebuilt facility that allows passengers on certain flights to the United States to undertake all immigration, customs and agriculture inspections in Abu Dhabi prior to departure. Having cleared CBP, passengers can checkthrough their baggage to their final destination in the US. On reaching the US, passengers will be treated as domestic arrivals, which allows for faster processing at their arrival airport.

Jay Gray, Brand USA’s Vice President, Global Partnership Development, notes,“We realise the potential, need and importance for us to proactively engage with the Middle East tourism industry in order to maximise the opportunities that increased direct flights, preclearance and pent-up travel demand from the region offers. Travel news Jebel Sifah 2014 is set to be an exciting time for visitors and residents in Jebel Sifah, one of the two largest hospitality and residential projects being developed at the moment in Oman, by Muriya Tourism Development.

Accessibility to this destination is at the foreground of Muriya’s plans with the residential development’s infrastructure almost complete. Most recently, the 800-metre entrance road from the gate has been completely tarred along with the Marina and Sifawy Boutique Hotel roads. Work on the 1100-metre main boulevard, which is the main road going through the entire length of the project, is rapidly progressing and completion is expected within the next three months.

Due to increased sales for residential units in Jebel Sifah, bespoke retail outlets are starting to open, accommodating resident’s requirements and taking advantage of the new market. At present, five shops have already opened in Jebel Sifah including Totem, a boutique that carries collections by designers exclusive to the region, a florist, a candle and frankincense outlet, GIB (German Interior Brand) furniture showroom and a supermarket.

Philippines The Department of Tourism of the Philippines, headed by Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Benito C. Bengzon, Jr., recently announced its efforts to further promotion in the region as it has identified the Middle East as a priority opportunity market.

The region has registered a growth rate of 20.3% year on year from 57,275 in 2012 to 68,916 in 2013. Key markets for the Philippines from this region are KSA which registered 38,969 arrivals and the UAE with 15,155. The WTO has declared the Middle East as the smallest yet the fastest growing outbound market in the world today.

Already underway, the 18–hole golf course has been roughly shaped and golfing enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that the first five holes of the course are due to be complete and green by June 2014.

Hamza Selim, CEO of Muriya Tourism Development has said of the progress,“Jebel Sifah has been designed to provide the best experience for local and international tourists and investors in Oman. As this phase moves quickly towards completion, we are proud to provide our visitors with an overall destination experience.”

Recognising the importance of business to business meetings in the market, Philippine hotel and resort executives, airline representatives and tour operators visited the recent Arabian Travel Market in full force.

Bengzon added, “They represent the best quality of products and services from the destinations visited by tourists from the UAE in particular and the GCC in general.

Boracay, Cebu, Davao and Palawan are the favorite destinations among the Middle East tourists coming to the Philippines.

Indonesia Increasing visitor numbers, developed infrastructure and a lot of new destinations for the travel year 2014 – the archipelagic state of Indonesia is facing numerous tourist developments. According to the Vice Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, H. E. Sapta Nirwandar,“We will convey a message of Wonderful Indonesia as the World’s Heart of Wonders. Why is Indonesia the World’s Heart of Wonders? Simply it means tourists will find countless wonders centered in Indonesia.”

Travel news Slovakia The Slovak Tourist Board would like to promote Slovakia as the land of spas and water fun for residents of the Gulf States.

Slovakia ranks among one of the most significant countries in the world from the viewpoint of abundance, yield and chemical composition of its mineral waters. Written records of the medicinal use of curative waters in Slovakia date back to the 12th century. Archaeological finds, however, suggest that the curative waters were used much earlier.

Slovakia also boasts five other interesting water parks as well as 15 thermal swimming pools that are open all year round and are fun-oriented and family-friendly. Also, there are interesting monuments, castles, chateaus, museums, galleries and historical centres in the towns surrounding Slovak spas. Towns with shopping centres are also nearby.

Kyoto Kyoto City has opened a promotional office in Dubai to encourage Gulf nationals and residents to visit Japan’s ancient capital for holidays and leisure. The opening of the office, which takes immediate effect, makes the office the first in the Middle East by a Japanese tourism authority.

As the capital of Japan for over 1000 years, Kyoto was the kitchen of the Imperial Court. Kyoto is Japan’s ancient imperial capital, home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and most of Japan’s cultural and traditional arts and crafts traditions, including Kyoto’s famous geiko and maiko (apprentice geiko) as well as Japanese kaiseki cuisine among others. Czech Republic CzechTourism highlighted trends in modern spas to focus on specialised stays for the 2014 season. The trend is expected to especially interest families with children, sports lovers and young couples. In this regard Czech spas will continue their efforts to present themselves as a place for powerful relaxation, cultural, as well as gourmet experiences in the new season.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport To Become the Middle East’s Leading Gateway To The Americas Qatar announced it would begin service to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) this July and Etihad Airways announced new direct flights to Dallas/Fort Worth beginning December 3, 2014.

Watercolours and Silk Paintings are her first love but she enjoys working in Acrylics, Mixed Media and Mosaics too. Her artworks have evolved over the years with her experimental attitude and the openness to new ideas and media.

Aarti Bahl Bahl is a selftaught artist who enjoys acrylics and oils, with a special interest in paper crafts. Her work enables her to portray her thoughts and feelings in abstract forms. She uses a lot of turquoise, blue and green in her paintings to provide a balance between stimulation and serenity. To her, these

colours emanate positivity and create a calming environment.

Having initially studied Textile and Fiber Arts in England Onanian developed her very own style and passion for bold textures and even bolder colours. Working with various creative mixed media including textiles, and her very own handmade paper, sometimes embossing, etching and using all kinds of art tools has enabled her to develop her very own signature style of relief work that one gets to view in her Hatta series - contemporary representational abstractions that bursts out of the canvas in colour.

Rare Mickey’s Service Station Service Station’, featuring Mickey Mouse and Goofy, will cross the block at Heritage Auctions as part of the company’s Animation Art Signature Auction. It is estimated at more than USD60,000.

‘DubaiDino’ It is official: The 155 million-year-old female dinosaur exhibit that has earned tremendous appreciation from visitors all over the world at The Dubai Mall has been named ‘DubaiDino.’

The name was chosen from thousands of entries for the #NameTDMDino competition held on social media platforms and across educational institutions, since the exhibit was unveiled in March this year. Nearly 300 entries were received every day. ‘DubaiDino’ emerged as the clear favourite surpassing other names suggested.

Sporting the new identity, the 155million year old dinosaur fossil will now also feature a bilingual logo and illustration. Visitors will soon be able to take home souvenirs from their visit to the magnificent exhibit with a range of branded products to be showcased near the exhibit shortly.

The ‘DubaiDino’ exhibit is open to the public daily at the Grand Atrium of The Dubai Mall. At 24.4m long and 7.6m high, ‘DubaiDino’, a Diplotocus Longus dinosaur fossil, is set apart by its long tail sweeping behind and an equally slender long neck rising eerily high as if bracing for battle.

With nearly 90 per cent of its bones being original, the fossil is rated high in scientific integrity and is an unmatched specimen in terms of quality in any museum or private collections. Visitors can learn more about the Late Jurassic Period dinosaur from a dedicated team on-site.

Seeing Through Light

Porta Mosque On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, Capsule Arts will release a new limited edition art print by Emirati artist Khalid Mezaina. Porta Mosque is inspired by the temporary mosques that can be found across the UAE, from the construction sites of Dubai to the wadis of Fujairah. These makeshift structures have been a long-standing feature of Islamic architecture in the Emirates. In keeping with the spirit of giving during Ramadan, Capsule Arts will be donating 25 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of each print to the Big Heart Campaign, a UAE charity dedicated to helping Syrian refugee children. This encompasses donations from both Khalid Mezaina and Capsule Arts.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has announced the inaugural Guggenheim Abu Dhabi exhibition, ‘Seeing Through Light: Selections from the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Collection’, opening on November 5, 2014 at Manarat Al Saadiyat.

Presenting for the first time in the capital artworks acquired for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi collection, the exhibition will feature the work of 18 artists from the 1960s to the present who work in multiple countries and regions around the globe and whose work encompasses a variety of media. ‘Seeing Through

Light’ remains on view until January 19.

The exhibition introduces Guggenheim Abu Dhabi’s curatorial vision through a theme-based collection presentation that explores the concept of light. In conjunction with the exhibition, public programmes, film screenings, adult and youth workshops, and performances by several leading contemporary artists whose works are now part of the permanent collection of the museum will be presented.
