THE ABILITY TO SLIDE O TO DIVERT ENERGIES, I Impact absorption definitely is the essential role of a helmet for protection of the wearer. In fact, the history of ARAI has been the ongoing efforts to elevate the level of its capability, and such effort of ARAI shall never stop.
Regarding this crucial fact, it is important to know the impact energies the helmet needs to absorb can be dramatically reduced, if it can glance off obstacles by sliding across uneven surfaces and divert energies of the impact.
Yet, it also is true the wearer of the helmet can be travelling much faster than the drop speed of the impact tests. This suggests that the real world impacts can be quite different from those at the test lab.
This fact reveals that the ability of a helmet to slide over uneven surfaces is another fundamental role of a helmet for real world protection.
As the kinetic energy of a moving object increases by the square of the speed, even a street rider, travelling at the legal limit, can carry up to 12 times the impact energy the world’s most stringent standard allow. No helmet, regardless of brand, can be expected to manage such energies directly.

SBK rider Jonathan Rea crashed heavily at Imola in 2012. Jonathan explains: “I suffered a frightening high-side on my Honda during Superpole qualifying and was airborn high into the air before smashing heavily on the tarmac. My head smashed violently on the track upon impact. After the race I praised my Arai helmet, which undoubtedly saved me from serious injury. ARAI has been observing this throughout our long history Experience, though decades of lessons learned in the street and on the track, continues to reinforce a simple truth that a Rounder, Smoother and Stronger Shell is better able to divert impact energy by sliding across uneven surfaces and glancing off obstacles more easily, as well as helping to minimize excess rotational forces. Thus, ARAI believes in a continuous convex curve of a minimum radius 75mm – defined by the R75 SHAPE.

The R75 concept R75 may sound complex, but it very basic at its roots: A simple tool allows everyone to visualize and easily understand for themselves. The R75 gauge demonstrates how Arai strives to maintain the R75 radius wherever possible. Move the gauge around the shell surface, as long as the two ends of the gauge are touching the surface, the shell conforms the R75 shape concept. R75 SHAPE is one of in-house standards ARAI enforces. ARAI does so to offer better protection to wearers. It’s not something most standards demand. It’s something ARAI demands.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG SHELL IS NOW VERY OBVIOUS TO ME Racer Josh Wainwright not only crashed heavily at Oulton Park in 2012, his helmet was also overrun several times by another rider. Josh: “My helmet suffered multiple impacts: hitting the surface of the track several times and being overrun by one of my competitors. This crash proved to me that multiple impacts on the same spot do occur. The strength of the outer shell showed to be of great importance and it protected my head. That's why I walked away from this crash.”

RX-7 RC The ultimate in Carbon fibre The Arai RX-7 RC carbon fibre helmet must be one of the most special helmets ever offered to the motorcycling community. Each outer shell consists of no less than eleven carefully applied layers. The technology of the new RX-7 RC is based on that of the GP-6 RC car-racing helmet, which was specially developed for Formula 1 use. It consists of an extremely stiff and light carbon fibre outer shell, reinforced with the “Peripherally Belted” construction. The Arai engineers searched and found a superior carbon fibre quality. - Training The Arai Inspiration Centre (AIC) is an industry first and is based near the Arai European headquarters in The Netherlands. Since 2006 it fulfils an important role in ensuring that Arai product quality and specifications are maintained during the entire life span of a helmet. This is done by educating and training dealers, importers and Arai technicians, who service our customers in each of the markets that fall under the control of Arai Europe. Once graduated, the Certified Arai Technicians leave the AIC with a total understanding of our product and play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and long-term customer support. The AIC has also quickly become a favourite among international journalists, because of the unique collection of riders and drivers helmets on the walls of the centre. Test centre Besides training, the AIC’s role is to act as a testing centre for procedures specified by various national standards, including ECE 22-05, SNELL M2010 and SA standards. Any test can be reproduced according to these varied official regulations under strictly controlled climatic conditions. Research & Development With the knowledge gained from market feedback, from racing and continuous testing at the AIC, the centre also contributes to Research & Development, accelerating the introduction of new helmet technology and improving our reaction time to changing market needs.

Perhaps the ultimate demonstration of a company’s faith in its product is how strongly it is willing to warrant it. Since 1993 Arai helmets are warranted against defect in material and workmanship for 5 years from the date of first use, but no more than 7 years from the date of manufacture. Arai subscribes to the Snell Memorial Foundation benchmark (US Standard) of five years as the suggested usable lifespan of a motorcycle helmet.

the right size
- Don’t guess size, make sure! Did you know that according to a British research, no less than 60% of motorcycle riders are using a (much) too large helmet? A better fitting and more comfortable helmet is a better performing helmet. Why? It keeps you more alert, better focused and therefore a better rider. Not just for a few moments but for hours and even days when you enjoy the unique thrill only a motorcycle has to offer. To achieve this perfect fit, different shaped outer shells (in fact different shapes for Europe, the United States and Asia) and different inner shells are needed. Arai offers this incredible choice, complete with replaceable cheek pads and comfort liners for an even more customized fit. We offer so many fit options that it’s almost impossible not to achieve a perfect custom fit for every rider. Don’t guess your size, make sure! Your Arai helmet will only perform optimally when you wear the right size. Therefore, Arai strongly urges you to try on the actual Arai model and size helmet that you are considering buying. Why? Because things like the evolution of design technology, the changes in ECE requirements, and Arai’s own changes and advancements over the years can result in a different feeling of the current version of the model and size you’ve always worn. Different Arai models have a different fit due to a longer, intermediate or rounder oval shape of the inner and outer shell. For this reason, one model might fit you better than another, so try them all!
head measuring
Start with measuring your head to get an idea of the size to look for: measure (in cm) the circumference across the forehead, above the eyes and ears and over the small bump at the back of the head as illustrated, read the size where the tape joins. Fit the measured size. Focus on your head size (crown fit) measurement first, e.g. the area contacted by a baseball caps’ band. Do not be concerned with facial fit at this stage. When you can’t get the helmet past your cheeks or jaws, do not think it’s too small and reach for a bigger size. The helmet must fit your head! How? Remove the cheek pads and try on helmet sizes until you get that snug crown fit. For the most comfort the interior must fit snugly all around the crown of your head. You should feel some pressure at all the contact points around the interior perimeter, too much pressure could become uncomfortable in the future. Finally, Arai’s optional cheek pad thicknesses, and on some models the replaceable interiors, can fine-tune your personal fit. All Arai cheek pads can be replaced with a size that better suits your facial structure. But this fit should be addressed only when the crown size is correct. Besides the replaceable cheek pads, selected models feature the “Peel-away Cheek Pad Layer” and “Peel-away Temple Pad Layer”. The pads of these models can be made thinner easily by removing a 5 mm thick peel-away layer for added room if needed. In special cases, Arai helmets can be made to measure by an official Arai dealer or national importer.

ADDITIONAL SIZES
- Available in plain colours Arai provides one size outer shell for each two helmet sizes for most models, adding up to five outer shell sizes within limited models. Most other manufacturers may struggle to reach three different sizes. The advantage of using many outer shell sizes is that the inner liner and exterior will fit exactly right, rather than padding out an outer shell that is too large for its actual size. Using more outer shell sizes also prevents that for a small size head, a very large outer shell is used with a very thick inner liner. Or a small outer size shell with a very thin inner liner for a large head. In both cases the result is a helmet that is not in proportion with the rider, offering a curious sight.
VX-Pro Junior Black (XXS)
Arai also offers different sizes starting with size XXXS (Astro Light) to XXXL (Quantum ST) offering a perfect fitting helmet for almost any head size, also because many interior parts are changeable. And when even these different sizes are not sufficient, Arai is able to have the helmet individually modified to special requests by our craftsmen for a complete custom fit. Five times inspected
Each Arai helmet goes through five separate quality-control departments: after the shell is made, after painting and graphic completion, after assembly and two in-process inspections.

Handmade
It can take up to five years for our experts to earn the right to create an Arai shell. Each shell can take up to 27 steps and to build one Arai helmet will take about 18 man-hours.
All penetration tested
All Arai helmets are penetration tested (except Freeway-2, Penta, Astro-Light and VX-Pro Jr),
although not required by European helmet standards. The Arai penetration test is performed with a 3kg test cone that strikes from a height of 3m on the helmet.
Double-D ring device
The flat and D-shaped rings fit smooth against the chin. No moving parts, no corrosion problems and just pulling the tab is enough to loosen the fastener.

The outer shell of Arai helmets is designed to glide without unnecessary resistance. You don’t want to decelerate your helmet more than necessary. That’s why all Arai vents and ducts are designed to break off during an impact.
Arai uses a stronger outer shell to spread impact forces and a softer inner shell to absorb remaining energy. The multiple-density EPS inner shell is made using a unique technology of combining three to five densities in various areas as a single component.
5-year limited warranty

All Arai helmets are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, and are serviceable only for the properly fitted first user for 5 years from date of first use, but no more than 7 years from date of manufacture.
Unlike many other manufacturers Arai provides one size outer shell for each two-helmet sizes for most models. Together with different shaped outer shells for different models it is almost impossible not to find the fit you are looking for.
