forward out of the passenger seat, into the center of the dashboard. Her head collided with the rearview mirror while the airbags imploded around both sides of her body, crushing her. Bill sustained minor injuries, but the accident would leave Grace with two broken ankles, two broken legs, a shattered rotator cuff, and four broken ribs.
“We both moved here, we met here, and we married here.” The Stratford, Carmel’s Premier Rental Retirement Community, is a place that many call home. But to Bill and Grace Branic, it is so much more. In Bill’s words, “We both moved here, we met here, and we married here.” Their lives radically changed on November 16, 2011. “At the time, we still didn’t know what hit us,” remembered Grace. A car hit the driver’s side where Bill was seated, pushing their vehicle into a pole on the passenger side. Grace was thrust up and
“The swelling was so bad that the doctors couldn’t cast anything. They weren’t sure I was going to walk again, let alone live.” While in the hospital, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary. In December, Grace could be moved to The Retreat at The Stratford where she was able to take part in the on-site long-term rehabilitation care. The two agree that The Retreat presented a wonderful environment for healing. It worked out well for the couple. Bill was able to visit with Grace during the day and ride the elevator up a floor to their apartment where they had lived for over a year. Now back in their Independent Living Apartment, Grace is able to walk alongside her husband. “The nurses were absolutely amazing. My therapy has been outstanding. When I came here, I couldn’t move my right leg or right arm. Now I can. There is not a better place in Indianapolis than this place. There is no competition.”

WHEN IT COMES TO DIY TASKS, YOU’D be hard-pressed to find a duo more skilled than my parents. A recent retiree, my father spends much of his time in their basement, planning and building a detailed train layout modeled after the railroad activity in his Wisconsin hometown. My mother is a talented seamstress who can hem, mend, and make just about anything out of fabric and thread. Sadly, most of their talents weren’t passed on to me. (Embarrassing confession: I don’t even know how to sew a button onto a shirt, let alone create a garment from scratch.) But I did inherit my mom’s penchant for home-cooked meals. You’ll often find me in the kitchen, chopping, mixing, sauteing, and baking my way through new recipes, usually with a Golden Retriever eagerly awaiting fallen scraps. There’s a certain sense of satisfaction that comes from making something or finishing a project on your own. Just ask Adam Graef, whose residence we feature on page 78. A furniture-maker, Graef takes old or unwanted parts and pieces and revamps them into something cool yet useful. Evidence of his handiwork is peppered throughout the home, which has that popular industrial look down pat. If Graef ’s inventiveness inspires you to tap into your creativity, turn to page 42 for a rundown of classes and workshops hosted around town. You’ll leave them smarter, and you’ll have newly discovered skills that will come in handy should you feel compelled to overhaul your landscaping, throw a dinner party, or give an old item a new look with a coat of paint. I’m especially intrigued by the food-related sessions, where no doubt taste-testing is half the draw. Another feature in this issue takes you inside a guest home whose interior was influenced by a ritzy East Coast vacation spot (p. 62). Who needs a beach getaway when this beauty beckons? We also show you a lush Carmel garden shaped by the homeowners’ trips to Europe (p. 70). After some initial help, the wife now handles the majority of the maintenance herself, and with nearly three acres to tend, that’s no small feat. But I imagine that as she and her husband relax on their patio this summer, she’ll look out over her carefully planned and wonderfully executed space and experience a feeling familiar to so many other do-it-yourselfers—that of a job well done.

On the Surface When designing the Talya collection for Marble Systems, Sara Baldwin found inspiration in her travels to Turkey and the Middle East. So it comes as no coincidence that the pointed arches seen here in the Sophia tile mimic those you might find gracing a grand, centuries-old mosque. Made from polished Pallisandra and honed Allure marbles, the tile’s neutral tones make it versatile—and pretty—enough to use just about anywhere in the home. $321 per square foot. Trade Secret Professional chefs aren’t the only ones to whom restaurant supplier Zesco opens its doors. by Laura Kruty
When local restaurants and bars serve up their appetizers, entrees, and cocktails, many do so using equipment and tools from Zesco, an Indianapolis-based restaurant supplier, now in its 43rd year. Though its core business may be supporting eateries and watering holes, as well as hotels, schools, and healthcare facilities, Zesco welcomes all chefs—even those whose culinary prowess is displayed only in their home kitchens. Annie Zoll, Zesco tabletop design specialist, says storage containers, pizza stones, cutlery, mixing bowls, and measuring spoons are among the most popular items homeowners snatch up from the Capitol Avenue headquarters. Here’s a sneak peek at what else you’ll find among Zesco’s giant inventory, which numbers about 7,000 products in the showroom with far more online. n

More and more places seem to emphasize a meal’s appearance, giving diners a feast for the eyes before they even pick up a fork. This nine-piece garnishing kit ($49) contains tools for the home chef or bartender for whom the way a dish or cocktail looks is just as important as how it tastes. When used on cold butter or chocolate, the butter curler creates soft curlicues that lend a fancy look to entrees and desserts. The zester/citrus peeler is a must for garnishing mixed drinks with skinny strips of lemon or lime. Gadgets for convenience, like the apple corer, are represented, too. And who couldn’t use another paring knife in their collection?

Your home theater, complete with a big screen, booming sound, and cushy seating, is ready to go. All that’s missing is the intoxicating scent of popcorn—which, let’s be real, is half the draw of the movie-going experience. This countertop machine ($356) cranks out up to 92 1-ounce servings per hour. Zoll recommends using pre-measured portion packs, which take the guesswork out of how much oil, kernels, and seasoning to use. The result is a batch of popcorn that mirrors what you’d order at the megaplex. Now where’s the butter?
For those who want more than their fair share of the pie, this tool isn’t for them. But for everyone else, this pie cutter ($6) segments desserts into six equally sized wedges. For smaller slices, simply rotate the tool slightly after the first cut. Piece of cake! Or pie.

Tater tots, potato wedges, or even carrot sticks are safe in the center, flanked by two 2-ounce ramekins that keep sauces and dips where they should be.

Gardening can be one of life’s most rewarding pastimes. How fulfilling is it to see a plant blossom or carrots peeking through the dirt after hours of toil? But even with the best intentions, sometimes our efforts can wilt faster than a bouquet of flowers on a humid day. To help sow some seeds of inspiration, we sought out pros who maintain five popular spots around the city.

if it falls under the umbrella of “vegetable,” it’s probably growing among Matthew Jose’s two acres, one downtown and one on the northwest side. He tends to 100-plus varieties of veggies, including more than a dozen types of tomatoes, and lots of fresh herbs. “Basically, a wide enough variety of vegetables to keep things interesting for my customers throughout my growing season,” Jose says. That stretch lasts from April through December and fulfills Big City’s CSA (community supported agriculture) clients; its farm stand downtown, open Saturdays May through October; and orders from local restaurants, like Bluebeard, Milktooth, R Bistro, and Recess.
What he plants at home
“My son loves cherry tomatoes, so I try to have a couple of those plants growing at our house. And it’s always nice to have flowers nearby to pick—zinnias and poppies are a couple of my favorites.” What he’s learned on the job
Matthew Jose | Founder and owner of Big City Farms
Jose cautions against taking on too big of a project, which can set you up for frustration, he says. Also, “focus on tending things you get excited about, whether it’s flowers, vegetables, or fruit trees. The work of home gardening is most enjoyable when you’re able to walk out your door and admire something that makes you feel good.”
even if the weather outside is frightful , it’s always the perfect temperature inside the Garfield Park Conservatory, where Susan Micks cares for hundreds of tropical plants, including the popular Theobroma cacao, or chocolate tree. “We have one of the nicest ones I’ve seen,” she says. “It’s by far the tree we receive the most comments or questions about.” Micks also chooses which insects to release into the conservatory to keep pests at bay—essentially, good bugs to eat the bad ones, she explains—and pitches in to help keep the 3½-acre Sunken Gardens in tiptop shape.

Editing is important. “That may mean pruning a tree to allow more light to the plants under it, or finally pulling a plant that doesn’t perform well in your garden,” she says. She credits her former boss, Duane Martin at White River Gardens, for teaching her to have a critical approach, looking out for plants, leaves, and flowers that are more eyesore than eye candy. “When I walk through the conservatory, my mind is always thinking, what needs to go so that this will look better?”

framed portraits and landscapes inside, take time to check out Irvin Etienne’s exterior works of art. He designs and maintains several areas in front of the main museum building, such as the Sutphin Fountain and parts of the Sutphin Mall, the William and Lucy Wick Cutting Garden, and Nonie’s Garden, a circular bed just off the entry pavilion. In the latter, Etienne adds seasonal color throughout the year, such as tulips and pansies for spring, cannas and lantana for summer, and ornamental kale and cabbage for fall. This year, he’s introducing Croton ‘Zanzibar’ and Aglaonema ‘Pink Valentine’ to the IMA grounds, two colorful plants that Etienne first test-drove in his personal garden.
What he plants at home
“Tropicals. Lots of tropicals. But they’re combined with hardy perennials, trees and shrubs, and vegetables— everything from cannas to eggplants to magnolias co-exist in a lush jungle. I like lots of intense color and fabulous foliage. Life without cannas is pointless.” What he’s learned on the job

Try one new plant every year— minimum. “Even if it’s simply a different version of what you usually plant,” Etienne says. “You learn something every time that makes you a better gardener.” New in his garden this year are three colors of double-flowered Brugmansia with large, downward-hanging, trumpetshaped blooms. “Everybody I know loves the fragrance of Brugmansias,” he says. As for edibles, he’s trying out lemon drop hot peppers, whose bright-yellow color hints at their citrusy heat, and he’s revisiting an amethyst-hued sweet potato called Molokai Purple. “My first attempt was not overly successful, but that should never stop one from trying again. They’ll make very colorful fries.” For tools, he suggests a weeding knife. “Once you use one, you’ll wonder how you ever managed to garden before.”

rachel white tends the eskenazi health sky farm, a 5,000-square-foot garden on the roof of the Eskenazi Outpatient Care Center. Its bounty of various vegetables, fruits, and herbs, which includes a lengthy list of the usual suspects, plus fennel, kohlrabi, and tomatillos, is used by the hospital to create healthy meals to patients. Seating areas allow employees, patients, and even the public to soak up fresh air, sunshine, and views of downtown from seven stories up—scenery that you’d be hard-pressed to find from a traditional garden. The Sky Farm is starting its second season.

Rachel White | Eskenazi Health Sky Farmer and farmer for Growing Places Indy
When your initial idea starts wilting, there’s no shame in conceding defeat and changing courses. “Planning your garden is good, but it won’t ever go as planned, so be okay with that,” she says. “Plant something else and keep going.” If you have a small space, like the Sky Farm, which is just over one-tenth of an acre, grow produce that you know you’ll enjoy. “Plant what you like to eat, and learn to share it,” White says.
mike stockman’s focus is tropical gardening in the Hilbert Conservatory, home of Butterfly Kaleidoscope. He also maintains the Wedding and Sun gardens, the Indianapolis Garden Club Heritage Garden, and a small pollinator garden. He started the latter a few years ago with mostly native plants that provide nectar for bees and butterflies, as well as host plants for food and reproduction. “It’s an example of what you can do in your backyard to attract wildlife, but more importantly, help endangered and threatened species,” Stockman says. “This garden serves the institution well in our efforts to promote conservation for wild things all over the world.”
What he plants at home
The list is long, but common milkweed is probably the most important. “It’s a critical host plant for the monarch butterfly, and because Indianapolis is in the middle of the monarchs’ annual migration route, planting it makes a huge difference.” What he’s learned on the job

Most everything has a story to tell, Stockman says. “Try to do a little research and plant something with an amazing history. Add a few fragrant plants into the mix. If you can find a plant that is beautiful and has two or three other qualities, you n can talk your friends’ ears off all day about it.”

doesn’t have to go far for a taste of a posh East Coast vacation destination. They don’t even need to board a plane. The owners of this Williams Creek home re-created a taste of the Hamptons in their attached guest house, where lucky visitors can pamper themselves with simple luxuries and an open-air feel. Outfitted in white, the home also features rustic textures and clean lines that give company a sense of a seaside vacation, even when they’re miles from the ocean.
Julie Boutilier, interior designer and owner of Cornerstone Interiors in Greenwood, was tasked with furnishing the home from the ground up. The homeowners had visited the Hamptons, a popular summer getaway spot, and fell in love with the house they rented there. As luck would have it, that vacation home was featured on a local TV program. The couple sat down with Boutilier, turned on a recording of the show, and asked her to replicate the feeling.

Then they left town for six months on a mission trip, with no intentions of checking up on her while the home was under construction. “They spent a long time trying to convey the idea, but then they let me loose,” says Boutilier, who had done previous design work for the owners and was familiar with their tastes.
off to a good start Boutilier took the main home’s traditional design, starring warm woods and rich colors, and worked to transition that environment to the guest space’s coastal tones and vacation vibe. She started the journey with the original home’s screened-in porch, which became a four-seasons room complete with a sitting area and kitchen amenities. Two-tone brick walls reflect the exterior, while mahogany cabinets, soapstone countertops, and heated travertine floors ensure indoor comfort. Just beyond the updated fourseasons room, Boutilier installed an arched opening to the guest home. Like Dorothy’s threshold to the Land of Oz, the doorway’s simple shape frames an entirely new world. “The arched doorway became a fantasy portal to the vacation home away from home,” Boutilier says. The trip from Indy to the Hamptons begins quietly, with light-gray wooden planks on the walls and porcelain wood-grain tiles on the floor, suggesting a fresh-air feel. Light fixtures lead guests past a changing room where they can stash pool supplies or grab a fresh towel before heading outdoors. The pool area includes a spacious guest bath with an elaborate tiled mural and a walk-in shower lined with matching tiles, as well as a convenient laundry space that allows for efficient upkeep. Beyond that, the home takes on an enchanted feel within its walls, thanks to several small touches that add up to a study in elegance. Boutilier carried the water theme throughIM HOME | 2015

out the home, installing porthole windows and circular cutouts in the wood trim in the kitchen/living-room space and lining the staircase with wire rails. She underscored the homeowners’ faith by quietly integrating the Christian fish symbol into the home’s design. Look closely, and the familiar shape shows up along the wet bar, the kitchen cabinetry, and the living-room chairs.

Old meets new as the home’s style juxtaposes shiny surfaces with antique accessories. A rustic bench sits across from an elegant wet bar. Simple light fixtures hang above a state-of-the-art kitchen. “[The husband] wanted a comfortable, not fussy, space,” Boutilier says. “[The wife] loves glamour and excitement. My challenge was to incorporate these two distinct personalities into one space. Therefore, the idea of mixing old and new was a constant mantra throughout the design process.” The home is designed with comfort in mind, especially when it comes to visiting friends or colleagues. Where appropriate, Boutilier incorporated glass surfaces and open arrangements so there would be no need to search the kitch-

Glass shelves line the interior of the wet bar, while the dining area’s coffee station features gleaming white plates on an open shelf above. Even the refrigerator has a see-through door, inviting guests to peek at what’s available before they help themselves. The main dining table is large enough to seat 12 comfortably. Smaller parties may prefer to have breakfast at one of the bar stools along the kitchen island, which is covered in a honed white Calcutta Gold marble. A custom-made stainless-steel range hood throws out a little bling with its mirrored edges. The home’s heart is its sitting area, and its soul is the custom-designed fireplace at the center. Boutilier used gauzy white curtains, which are automated, to offer a little privacy while still allowing natural light to flood in. She chose simple furnishings, like the white slipcovered sofa facing the TV and leather recliners, which were on the homeowners’ must-have list. Above the fireplace and flat-screen television is an elegant cross, also a homeowner request. A trio of artwork above one sofa pays homage to one of the family’s mission destinations, and a bold-colored pillow on that same sofa is embroidered with a New York theme, reflecting another favorite spot. Despite the home’s traditional setting and accessories, Boutilier opted for a modern fireplace that sits underneath the huge TV and adds unique character to the room. “I designed [the mantel] to curve in on the sides and also going toward the back,” Boutilier says. “It was an engineering marvel to create, but the finished product is marvelous.”
creature comforts The guest bedroom, appropriately referred to as the “white room,” takes the neutral theme and runs with it, with an elegant four-poster bed, white curtains framing the windows, and a loveseat and chair that form a sitting area. Boutilier chose each piece both for its color and texture, which give depth to the white and create an artistic setting. The guest-suite bath continues the old and new themes. A glass-and-Carrara-marble shower complements the vintage-style floor tiles and a modern freestanding bathtub. The vanity features a trough sink with mirrors set above the countertops and along the walls up to and even on the ceiling. In another guest bath, the vanity, custom made by Cornerstone Interiors, is outfitted with LED lights that change colors.

A variety of textures keeps the guest bedroom comfortable, while a marble shower contributes to the sophisticated feel of the adjoining bathroom.
“It was a project to create, but we wanted the guest bathroom to be a truly unique and memorable experience,” Boutilier says. Extra visitors can lay their heads in the home’s office. Boutilier set it up with built-in desks and plenty of white cabinetry and bookshelves for storage. When the occasion calls for it, a Murphy bed can be opened as needed.
having a ball The guest experience evolves as visitors venture to the lower level. Boutilier topped the staircase with a beautiful piece of art that at first glance looks like a seashell. It’s actually a satellite picture of an alluvial fan formation in China, another example of nature taking top billing in the home. “It looks like an abstract painting, but when one finds out it’s a picture of Earth from space, it becomes all the more 68

magical,” Boutilier says. The lower level is all fun and games, with framed jerseys, a foosball table, and arcade games creating a sporty atmosphere. Visitors can perch upon the barstools and peer below to a subterranean basketball court. With the colors and logos of the Indiana Pacers, Butler University, and Indiana University, it’s a true ode to Hoosier sports. “The basketball court was important because the couple has teenagers, and they wanted the kids’ friends to be drawn to their home,” Boutilier says. This Hamptons home story has a happy ending. When the owners returned from their trip, Boutilier eagerly waited for their response. She received it in a late-night text from the wife, who was dealing with jet lag and couldn’t sleep. Instead, she was roaming through the home, marveling at the details. “She said, ‘You made my life beautiful,’” Boutilier says. ■

few people are privy to this, but Carmel is home to one of the most spectacular gardens in the area. The backyard, which spans close to three acres, is a compilation of several different garden types—structured French, traditional English Country, Italian Renaissance, and naturalistic. Each style has its own distinct charm. The owner’s vision for her dream yard gradually took shape over the years, gaining momentum with every trip she took to Italy and the English countryside—she’s been to each country at least five times. In between visits, she pored over European gardening magazines. “I love the gardens in England and Italy,” she says. “And that’s what I wanted to accomplish here. My garden’s probably more English than Italian, but the statues and columns give it more of an Italian flair.” Twelve years ago, after she retired and she and her husband moved to their current home, the owner was finally able to orchestrate the space that reflected her unique vision and passion for European-style gardens. Within a year, most of the pieces of this amazing yard were in place. “You won’t see a garden like this anywhere in Indiana,” says Lowell Rolsky, president of Pro Care Horticultural Services, who consulted on the project, designed the landscape, and performed some of the installation. “It has views that are individual spaces in and of themselves, and they all flow together to become a very interesting and very welcoming backyard.”

Uniting the landscape & hardscape This garden has something for everyone wrapped into one pleasing package. Boxwood hedges and an impressive custom-built brick-andlimestone fountain define the quadrants in the structured rose garden. Formal areas give way to more-casual kitchen gardens where rosemary, basil, tomatoes, and strawberries intermingle with a variety of sun-loving perennials. An extensive wisteria arbor, with an ornate Haddonstone bench tucked into it, leads into a shade garden. The far edge drops off into a wooded ravine and features pines, shade plants, and a double pond that ends in a waterfall. The owner’s must-haves included walkways; multiple fountains, so the soothing sound of water can be heard throughout; and Haddonstone urns and benches imported from England. Well-defined paths make it easy to meander from one area to another, and statues of Roman gods and goddesses and limestone Doric columns are sprinkled throughout. Other hardscape items— such as an iron gazebo supported by Corinthian columns and centered above a Haddonstone cherub fountain and an 18th-century twig-patterned concrete bridge, imported from a garden in London—dot the landscape and delight the eyes. “All the ornamental pieces in the yard give you something else to look at— something else to say ‘wow’ to,” Rolsky says. When it came to plantings, the homeowner’s goal was to have something blooming at all times. Crabtrees, irises, and peonies are among the harbingers of spring. In the summer, roses, black-eyed Susans, and verbena take center stage. Anemones, asters, Rose of Sharon, and late-blooming hydrangeas add color to the fall landscape. “In the winter, the boxwoods and the urns provide structure, and it’s actually quite beautiful,” the owner says. Being surrounded by such striking beauty makes visitors hard-pressed to name their most-admired spot. That’s not a problem for the homeowner, though. “My favorite is the formal area with 74

the fountain and the roses,” she says. “I love to sit out there on the patio in the evening, just relaxing and reading the newspaper. Nobody knows I have this back here. It’s my secret garden.”
Back to her roots Growing up on a farm in Northern Indiana made the homeowner no stranger to hard work. And to accomplish something of this magnitude took more than just a little TLC. She threw herself into the work, even clearing out the ravine, digging out the creek, and placing the large rocks in the bottom of it herself. Now she devotes three “really hard weeks” each spring and fall to whip it into shape. “After that, I work at my own pace,” she says, spending an entire day or just a few hours, depending on her schedule. Most days, when the weather accommodates, she’s out in the garden. “People don’t understand how peaceful and fulfilling gardening is,” she says, adding that she’s not a master gardener, although many people assume she is. Rolsky understands the allure of the soil. “Her willingness and desire to be out there on a daily basis to make sure she maintains the garden she wants is what’s always been special about that garden,” he says. “She has a passion for making something that is unique—that inspires us and challenges us to be on top of our game.” The homeowner inherited her love of gardening from her grandmother, an accomplished horticulturist known for her beautiful roses. The garden contains red-and-yellow daylilies and pinkishpurple perennial verbena that once bloomed in her grandmother’s garden. “Those are near and dear to my heart because they were hers, and they’re about 80 years old,” she says. “Whenever we moved, I took them with me. It’s like I transplanted my grandma everywhere.” While the homeowner does virtually all of the garden work herself, Rolsky helps with special projects, such as converting a bronze statue she purchased at R. Beauchamp Antiques into a fountain that is the centerpiece of the front yard. The pond of the water feature is auto-

matically refilled as needed through the irrigation system that Pro Care maintains. Two years ago, Rolsky converted the backyard patio area into an outdoor kitchen. “We also like to bring something to the table that she’s never seen or experienced and that she and her guests can appreciate,” he says. Some of the more unusual plantings Rolsky has introduced are variegated cypresses and leucodermis pines, which add unusual textures to the garden, and roses such as Oh So Easy, a dwarf variety with paprikacolored blooms.
A feast for the eyes and the palate From May through October, the homeowners enjoy sharing their fantastic backyard setting with friends and family, hosting everything from casual cookouts to formal sit-down dinners. For more elaborate meals, guests are seated at tables in the garden areas, and if they’re lucky, they’ll catch a glimpse of statues decked out with a whimsical touch—Athena is often adorned with a string of pearls or a tiara. On these occasions, the outdoor kitchen can be used as a prep area or a space to serve appetizers or desserts. For smaller, more laidback gatherings, guests can dine on the patio. Rolsky added onto the original brick patio, matching the existing brick of the English Country Tudor home. He also supplied new limestone along the patio to ensure that everything flowed together and looked like it had always been there. The homeowners wanted a full slate of high-quality amenities to maximize the use of the space—a grill, side burners, warming and storage drawers, a refrigerator, a sink, an ice chest, and bins for condiments. All are by Twin Eagles and purchased through Pro Care. “The outdoor-kitchen area is one of her husband’s favorite spots because he enjoys cooking out,” Rolsky says. “It’s his dream come true.” But her dream space is the entire backyard. “When we had it basically all done, I was amazed that I had done this and that it was really mine,” she says. “I still think that some days.” n

adam graef has a knack for taking an object no one wants and transforming it into something that not only looks good but is functional, too. His new home in the revitalized neighborhood of Fall Creek Place is a 2,200-squarefoot eclectic mix of both new and old materials, conversation pieces, and the odd vintage cast-off. Everywhere you look, there’s something interesting to see, whether it’s a collection of ice cream scoops artfully arranged in wire baskets on the wall, a giant scoreboard that used to hang in the gymnasium of Brownsburg High School, or an old wooden door that reads “Indpls. Asylum for the Insane.” “The door was salvaged, but I mirrored it and did the lettering myself, so it’s not really from an insane asylum,” Graef says. As a furniture-builder who specializes in reclaimed materials, Graef often travels the country looking for unique items to add to his stockpile of salvaged goods. Some of the items around his house came from his shop (Graef owned Rogue Decor), while others he traded for with friends who are in the antique business. He often buys things that he thinks are cool even if he doesn’t know how to use them yet. “I see the possibilities in the parts and pieces rather than focusing on the finished product,” he says. 80

Graef comes by his passion for reinvention and restoration naturally. As the son of an architect, growing up meant never living in a finished house. Whenever his father would complete a remodel, he would put the house on the market and move the family onto the next project. It was a pattern Graef continued as an adult. However, after renovating three homes in the Irvington area, Graef decided his current abode would be built from the ground up. He and his girlfriend longed to live closer to downtown amenities and were drawn to the charm of Fall Creek Place. Using a blueprint created by his father, Kurt Graef, he contacted the team at Carley Custom Builders to see if they could help turn his concept into a reality. “We broke ground in February of 2014, and we had very definite ideas about what we wanted to do,” Graef says. “The builders were really great about working with us on all that we wanted to do ourselves. I sat with them and showed them pictures of my other houses, and they said they would give me a chance. By doing a lot of the flooring, lighting, and tile work ourselves, we were able to save some money and put it toward upgrades.” The result is a light-infused industrial space with elements of warmth, a few whimsical items, and fun pops of color here and there. A five-foot-tall stuffed bear greets guests in the entryway, along with street signs bearing the names of the places Graef has lived before. Adorning the metal diamond-plate steps leading to the second floor is a banister Graef found at Midland Arts & Antiques Market and discovered fit perfectly in the space. Across from Gentle Ben is the couple’s office and a powder room that features a toilet-

paper holder made from a fire-hose cabinet, as well as a head-to-head Pac-Man table screen that has been refashioned into a vanity mirror. “All you have to do is find the game and then get some mirror finish from the craft store,” Graef explains. The main level also includes an open great room with a brick-stitched sofa found in a shop in Michigan and a coffee table from a furniture factory in High Point, North Carolina. Vintage factory stools provide seating at the kitchen island. Various items in the space have some local significance. The large industrial light fixtures overhead were originally used in the old RCA plant on Sherman Drive, while the brickwork was sourced from the former Irvington post office that was toppled by strong winds, which serves as a tribute to Graef ’s old neighborhood. His pantry doors came from a large neon sign that once graced a restaurant in Elwood. Graef cut the sign in half and outfitted the pieces with two Burger King spatulas that serve as handles. Though he’s willing to modify some items, others—like the 1800s workbench that serves as the couple’s sideboard—are off limits. “The history on that thing is amazing,” he says. “It’s written on the back who built it and how it was passed down. I thought it was a very cool piece when I put it in my shop, but then it didn’t sell, so I brought it home. At one time, a couple looked at it and said they could cut a sink into it, and I cringed. I mean, I’ll repurpose a lot of things, but some things should be left alone.” Another unique feature to the room is the insulated windowed garage door that functions as a gateway to the back patio. Graef considered installing a folding-glass system

in the space, but it proved to be too cost-prohibitive. French doors would have been comparable, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized that a garage door fit in perfectly with the home’s theme. In good weather, it could be raised to provide a nice extension of the living room for outdoor entertaining. “Eventually, I plan to screen in the porch, which will make that whole space even more functional,” Graef says. Behind the kitchen is the mudroom, which boasts a fun splash of fuchsia above horizontal white subway tiles; an old wood-topped storage cabinet; and a nozzle for rinsing the paws of Graef ’s two German Shepherds, Falkor and Captain Pickles, before they come inside.

After they’ve been turned on their sides and fitted with wiring so they illuminate, vintage pay-phone boxes serve as nightstands. Another large workbench acts as a dresser/TV stand for the couple, and a sitting nook provides a respite from the day with a tall, graphic-patterned wing chair, a glass table with a driftwood base, and cabinetry that Graef acquired from his grandparents. Graef says that the secret to repurposing the past is in seeing the possibility of what the item can be in the future, not what it is at the moment or what it was in the past. So what does the future hold for him? Although the couple has only been in the house for a few months—and there’s still more work to do—Graef is his father’s son. “I don’t know yet. I might sell it,” he says with a smile. “We want acreage eventually.” ■

Garcia recommends those with an extra $1,000 buy a Big Green Egg to add to their patio. It was what he chose when he needed a new grill. The emerald-green, oval-shaped appliance smokes, grills, roasts, and bakes, and comes in various sizes. It also adds a conversation piece to your backyard.

“Right now, gray seems to be the new beige,” Bryant says. “Depending on how many kids and animals you have, you probably need to spruce up a little bit every three years.”

Gorden would plant a large tree like an oak. Its merits are numerous— it delivers shade, offers environmental and aesthetic benefits, provides food and shelter for wildlife, and improves your property value.
Gorden quotes a Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.” Most people, he says, want to plant something “smaller and flowery,” but Gorden tells people to choose a tree that’s big, majestic, and has lots of character.

Thomas Pearson, owner of Thomas J. Pearson Builder/Remodeler
Pearson’s focus would center on the first thing you probably notice in a home—its front door. He suggests jazzing up your door with new locks and seals and a fresh coat of paint. Why? He’s seen first hand what those can do.
“A few years ago, I painted my front door to make it very presentable and changed the locks,” he says. “The neighbors commented that they really liked the color.”

You may have to take a moment to figure out where each lamp ends and each chandelier begins as you enter this deceptively large home-decor store. It’s packed with so many styles, colors, and designs of furniture, lighting, and accent pieces that your options are nearly endless. While one room might feature a more preppy, New England style with lots of blue-floral china, the next room could be packed with brighter pieces, like an embroidered orange throw pillow. We love the barware with midcentury-modern vibes, the interesting light fixtures scattered throughout, and the colorful cocktail napkins ideal for holiday parties.
