GROUNDED PLANT & FLORAL CO. ONE OF THE PIONEERS of the local plant scene, Grounded Plant & Floral Co. opened in the summer of 2017 on the near east side of Indy. Owner Amanda Griffith started the shop as a home for her business creating floral arrangements for weddings. Adding houseplants to the brick-and-mortar location was initially meant to help pay the bills, but ended up becoming the main focus of her venture. “Everyone I told thought I was crazy—plants weren’t that popular four years ago,” says Griffith, who expanded into the neighboring storefront after a year. Grounded’s selection depends on what’s available from growers, and—like many industries—the houseplant supply chain has been affected by the pandemic. The shop stocks options that appeal to its base of city-dwelling customers who need low-light and easy-care plants, as well as its following of more hardcore enthusiasts, who seek more

rare or trendy acquisitions like philodendron micans, monsteras, pink princess philodendrons, and hoyas. “We have some clientele who have a wish list they are trying to fulfill, so they come in every week and look at what we’ve gotten in,” Griffith says. In addition to plants, the store has recently added more lifestyle items to its offerings as a way to continue standing out among the growing field of competition. “If your friends are in town and they’re not plant people, there’s other things to look at,” she says. Olive oil, ceramic coffee drippers, wooden cheese boards, and self-care products can be bundled to make gift boxes for any occasion. But plants, along with pots, soil, and other botanical-themed items, remain the bulk of the inventory. “It’s an urban jungle that people can come into and wander,” Griffith says. “I want it to feel a bit cluttered, where people can walk into a corner and get lost.”

ROOT 31 IN WESTFIELD, Root 31 oper-

ates out of a small converted house on Park Street, focusing on houseplants with a heavy dose of florals. “I come by it pretty honestly—I grew up in the plant industry,” says owner Angela Gapinski. She brought her experience working for her father’s local greenhouse and as a floral designer to Root 31, which started as a side hustle. Just a year after opening her doors, COVID19 hit the United States. But what began as a time of scary uncertainty evolved into a major boon for the business. “We thought: Who’s going to buy a houseplant when people are fighting over toilet paper?” she says. “It’s really exciting to see people excited about plants.” Root 31 also has a buildyour-own-bouquet flower bar, with pricing by the stem. Sansevieria—or snake plants—are big sellers among the shop’s varieties, being an accessible, beginner-level grower that’s hard to kill. “Our entire passion is teaching people about how they can take care of plants, and what plants can do for them,” Gapinski says. “That’s the silver lining of everything that’s going on in the world.” In November 2020, she opened a gift shop called Remedy in a building behind Root 31 with a vision of creating a community space in the connected courtyard, where plant swaps and classes on topics like plant care and flower arranging can eventually be held. “Learn something new, meet people with the same hobbies,” Gapinski says. “We see this space as a gathering spot.” 226 PARK ST., WESTFIELD, 3178043567, SHOPROOT31.COM

SNAKEROOT BOTANICALS CARVING A NICHE on the near southeast

side, Snakeroot Botanicals takes an environmentally conscious and organic approach to houseplants and gardening. Owner Patrick Burtch and his wife, Laura, rooted the business in their love of outdoor gardening, but they offer an array of houseplants in their storefront. “The front half of the store is primarily plants, herbal products, bulk organic herbs, and teas,” says Burtch. “The back half is geared toward supplies, pots, and a variety of soil amendments, all organic and natural.” Situated on the bustling Virginia Avenue strip in Fountain Square, Snakeroot joined the Indy plant scene in spring 2021. “We’re trying to evolve to more focus on edibles and herbals,” says Burtch, who—along with Snakeroot’s third partner—is also one of the owners of Square Cat Vinyl. “Right now, some of the items that sell pretty consistently are anything that is a string of something—string of pearls, string of dolphins, string of watermelons,” Burtch says, referring to three delicate, trailing succulents. Snakeroot recently started carrying its own blends of soil, which customers can purchase in bulk. They also have seasonal offerings like gourds. “We’d like to be a city and neighborhood destination for gardeners of all types,” says Burtch. “We’re using the houseplants as a vehicle to introduce people to outdoor gardening as well.” 1052 VIRGINIA AVE., 3176047562, SNAKEROOTBOTANICALS.COM 30

THE FOREST FLOWER HOME & GARDEN SHOP A HYBRID MIX of outdoor nursery and indoor plant boutique,

The Forest Flower Home & Garden Shop has a sprawling multi-structure property on the northwest side that includes a charming, vintage glass-paned greenhouse. The location had been the longtime home for a seed purveyor, produce stand, and family-run garden store. In 2018, Leah Flanagan and her mother purchased and renovated the site, preserving some of the historic features like bulk seed drawers and century-old light fixtures. “We have that cool piece of Indianapolis history,” Flanagan says. “We wanted it to be like a little magic discovery in the city, like a little jewel.” The shop has one small building dedicated to indoor plants, interspersed with unique handmade gifts, pottery,

macrame, and crystals. Hardy standards like pothos and philodendrons make up some of the houseplant inventory. The greenhouse features succulents and cacti. Forest Flower also sells annuals, perennials, shrubs, and outdoor gardening supplies, along with seasonal staples like mums and Christmas trees. “We’re a little different from some of the houseplant-only shops,” Flanagan says. “I would still consider us a full-service garden shop.” A creek runs through Forest Flower’s 3 1/2 acres, where two miniature donkeys and a flock of free-range chickens live. “It does create a unique shopping experience and vibe,” she says.

URBAN HOUSEPLANT COLLECTIVE THE PINT-SIZED Urban Houseplant Collective settled into its home in the Irving Theater building in Irvington after owner Hannah Flege found success at outdoor events. “When I started setting up for farmers markets, I saw there was a market for plants,” says Flege, who previously worked a desk job in healthcare. After a hugely successful pop-up on the east side, Flege decided it was time to take a leap to open a permanent location, which she launched in the spring of 2021. “People said how great it was to have me in the neighborhood—I took that to heart and I ran with it,” she says. Among her inventory are her favorite vining plants, like monstera. Popular among Urban Houseplant’s customers are also succulent tray gardens and air plants, which Flege says are challenging to source. The business started as the Irvington Theater Plant Company, but Flege quickly started pursuing an expanded version of the business that dovetailed off the success she had selling plants at pop-up events and markets around town. “I wanted something that would encompass everything,” she says. “I’d love to get a plant truck.” She already opened a second small grab-and-go location in The Amp, the near-westside marketplace and food hall in the midst of the 16 Tech Innovation District. 5505 E. MONON PLANT COMPANY A NEW ADDITION to the botanical scene is Monon Plant Company, nestled in a charming green house in Broad Ripple. Owner Lorin Dahl has always been interested in houseplants, but the idea of opening her own shop was originally a joke in her family that stemmed from her large personal plant collection. “One day it turned from ‘You should’ to ‘We could’ do this,” Dahl says. Monon Plant opened in spring 2021. “We have a lot of younger families who are busy and traveling a lot and need easier-care plants,” Dahl says. She is happy to recommend one of her own favorites, a classic pothos. “It’s a very common one; it’s pretty and a quick grower,” she says. Sansevieria—or snake plants— and zamioculcas zamiifolia—or ZZ plants—are staples at her shop, where houseplants headline the show, along with a small selection of ceramics and home goods. Dahl says she hopes to offer some classes her customers have expressed interest in attending, focused on topics like plant care 101, propagation, and terrariums. “We’re always getting messages and questions: ‘Why is my plant always dying?’” she says. “We’re there for those answers.” Dahl says she wants customers to consider the shop a resource for questions about plant care and challenges—even if the species came from another store. “We want everyone to have their plants and have a happy home,” Dahl says. 6528 CORNELL AVE., 3176028833, MONONPLANTCO.COM 2021 | IM SHOPS
