Common Threads

I’LL BE HONEST. When I was planning this issue of Home, I didn’t

intend to focus so heavily on renovation projects. As I was reviewing and selecting the featured properties, though, a common, overarching theme emerged. Whether the homeowners loved their residences or not, they all committed to improving and personalizing them, either by adding elements like a poolhouse to provide shade and relief from the summer sun (“Splash Pad,” p. 28) or a conservatory to enjoy natural surroundings throughout the year (“Through the Looking Glass,” p. 42) or by giving interior spaces a complete overhaul to better reflect the family’s lifestyle and aesthetic tastes (“Redesigned Roots,” p. 32). I was particularly inspired by the bright, verdant conservatory, which reminded me of a greenhouse. Even on a snowy day in February, setting foot inside the space felt like stepping into springtime. Not only was the large room filled to the gills with a lush collection of houseplants, it was also furnished thoughtfully with unique accessories and plant-related goods. A couple of leafshaped pillows on reupholstered chairs in the far corners gave me an idea to spin off a page of leaf-print decor items toward the front of the publication (“Hook Up the Ivy,” p. 14). In addition to our resource listings of residential pros and local shops and suppliers starting on page 52, we also highlight the work of artisans and craftspeople in this edition. Ceramic artist Sarah Anderson kicks off our editorial content with a selection of handmade pottery (p. 11), and profiles of Indiana woodworkers (“With the Grain,” p. 18) showcase the styles, techniques, and philosophies they apply to the trade.

contemporary woodworking materials and design, “green” continues to be the big buzzword—both as a color and a trend. Recycling and repurposing is in, and supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have only reinforced the benefits of sourcing lumber locally and making use of urban trees and existing wood. Here, several Indiana woodworkers share their thoughts on trends, inspiration, Hoosier hardwoods, and how they found their way into the industry.

Iron Timbers CRAFTSMANSHIP IS a family trait for

Gary Payne and his sons, Dustin and Caleb. Co-owners of Iron Timbers in Osgood, Indiana, the trio hails from an English bloodline famous for its woodworking skills and prowess. Dustin broached the idea of teaming up to create a wood and metal shop in late 2016. “Our dad was a former homebuilder and construction guy who taught building trades for a local career center for 30 years,” he says. “At that time, he was retired and my brother and I were both working as industrial electricians. I’d seen some online posts about live-edge tables with metal legs selling for a lot of money, so I approached Caleb with the idea and we started working together on some projects.” By spring 2017, the Paynes had officially launched Iron Timbers in southeastern Indiana, a region some consider the “Hardwood Capital of the World.” “Our mission is to use our Godgiven gifts to create and bring into existence people’s ideas, designs, and dreams through our handcrafted creations,” Gary says. “I’ve been a woodcarving artist all my life, and I personally feel our love for God allows us to be inspired by all kinds of things—nature, people, buildings, and trees. We allow our creativity to flow from that.” Tables that combine live-edge tops, carved wood details, and metal bases seem to be the bread-and-butter product for Iron Timbers, although the Paynes also fabricate custom metal-and-wood sculptures and other items for community organizations, homebuilders, remodelers, and design firms. Many customers have gotten in touch after seeing Iron Timbers items featured on the past few seasons of HGTV’s Good Bones. “To me, the [woodworking] trend is moving more toward specialized makers who capture the essence of what people want,” Gary says. “People are particular about what they bring into their homes. We work hard to accommodate that.”

born with woodworking in his blood. “My great-grandfather and grandfather were cabinet builders at Orinoco Furniture Company in Columbus,” he recalls. “My father was a hobbyist furniture builder, and my aunts were talented toy makers and wood carvers.” By his early 20s, Bohall had set his own course into the industry, working with craftsmen he knew in Columbus before moving to Indy in 2014. Here, he founded Bohall Design and Fabrication in 2016 in a Millersville dairy factory-turned-studio, sharing space with a metal sculptor and later becoming one of the first tenants of Ruckus Makerspace. These days, Bohall and his team work out of a 5,000-square-foot shop in the Circle City Industrial Complex. “Our biggest focus is to keep fine craft at the forefront of everything we’re doing,” he says. “Everyone in the shop brings forward ideas, and we go over proposals as a team to balance efficiency of construction while also building with heritage in mind.” As a perfect example, Bohall’s Osage Orange and walnut items incorporate traditional joinery mechanisms. “We like to use old standards of production, but in a modern way,” he explains. “Our pieces look simple, but they have complicated underlying elements that will make them last for a long time.” Bohall’s group also manages its own metal fabrication in house, introducing the ability to add steel, brass, and aluminum elements to wood pieces. Style-wise, Bohall is noticing a shift toward well-executed furniture and streamlined design. “Primary shapes are what people are gravitating to instead of highly carved ornate pieces,” he says. “Modern style is always popular, and the trends I pay the most attention to are usually even simpler than that.” 1125 E. Indy Urban Hardwood A SELF-PROFESSED “wood nerd,” Brian

Presnell puts his art background to good use in his current role with Indy Urban Hardwood. A woodworking class in junior high served as his introduction to the trade, paving the way for Presnell to graduate from Herron School of Art and Design in 1995 with a degree in furniture design. After installing art all around Indy and building relationships with organizations throughout the community, Presnell shifted gears to focus on urban lumber. “It’s a national trend; there are companies doing this all across the country,” he says. “A lot of sawmills don’t like using urban trees because they may have nails or spikes in them that can ruin a veneer blade. Our model is to recycle urban lumber into useable material that we can make beautiful stuff with, reusing trees that would otherwise be mulched or burned.” Indy Urban Hardwood accepts trees from museums, university campuses, golf courses, cemeteries, and even homeowners throughout the Indy metro area. Kiln drying the wood is the key to creating useable lumber, a process Presnell and his team manage onsite at their 16,000-square-foot facility in an old near-southside Kroger building. For his yard-to-table furniture pieces and accessories, Presnell is happy to let the wood speak for itself. “I look closely at the log when I’m deciding how to cut the tree,” he explains. “I find inspiration in all of our local hardwoods. Justin Berg cut their woodworking teeth by constructing a few items for York’s new home during their days off from the firehouse. Seeing a gap in the market, the duo decided to team up and start selling handcrafted tables and other wood furniture in 2012. York and Berg learned on the job, and as demand for their products increased, eventually moved out of their garage workshop and hired employees. “No one has a degree in woodworking, but we all held summer jobs growing up in fields ranging from serving tables to construction, and we feel the mixture of backgrounds makes us a well-rounded team,” York says. Initially focusing on tables, Brothers has added cabinets and other pieces of furniture to its inventory over the years, as well as metal work. “We try not to limit ourselves to a specific style and rather hold to a specific level of quality,” York says. “We do have several talented designers we work with, and they all push us creatively. It’s not uncommon for us to be working on a farmhouse table, a modern table, and cabinets all at once.” York and Berg prefer to bring their customers’ visions to life as opposed to pushing their own design agenda. “We typically build to order, so we aren’t seeking new designs or trying to reinvent the wheel,” York says. “We want our tables and furniture to be statement pieces, but it’s most important that they’re functional and serve their intended purpose of bringing people together. Getting too artsy with style typically leads to a decline in function.” York finds inspiration through the creative process more than in any one particular kind of wood or metal. “We take rough lumber and work on it for several days making it nicer and nicer,” he says. “Once it gets to our finish area, it instantly changes from wood to furniture. Simply Amish RECOGNIZABLE BY its natural wood

Simply Amish president and co-founder Kevin Kauffman grew up in an Amish community, taking an early interest in his dad’s woodworking shop and creating pieces to sell for pocket money while his peers were busy running lemonade stands. Although he’s now a First Christian Church member, Kauffman continues to work closely with Amish relatives and stays attuned to the designs and products sold through the boutique furniture store in Castleton.

“Our mission is to supply the Indy area with high-quality, Americanmade products,” he says. Reputable for its custom-made solid wood furniture and upholstery, Simply Amish launched its Indianapolis retail store in 1994, catering to a customer base keen on seeking heirloom-quality pieces. “We work with several furniture designers who find inspiration all around the world,” Kauffman says. “One of our more popular designs was inspired by railroad bridges. You just never know where the next idea will come from.” Most Simply Amish pieces are constructed from one of seven different hardwoods in what Kauffman calls “transitional” styles. “We see clean lines and medium wood tones as the latest trends,” he adds. “Grays are still pretty hot as well. client needed help creating a spot to beat the heat while fully enjoying his backyard pool area, he turned to Steve Gray Renovations to build a shelter that blended with the style and finishes of his existing residence. Gray teamed up with architectural designer Gary Nance and interior designer Tonya Ballew to plan, construct, and furnish this safe haven from solar rays. The new poolhouse is equipped with conveniences like a kitchen and bar, bathroom, laundry and storage area, dining table with overhead pergola, and open living space to gather and watch TV in front of the fireplace after a long day spent swimming.

WINDING, NEVER-ENDING ROWS OF RED BRICK,

Colonial-style homes welcome you to Sycamore Springs on Indy’s north side. The sea of white trim and wrought-iron gates evokes a historic feel. Instead, you’ve just entered a quaint housing community a few blocks shy of the bustling Castleton shopping scene, where most of the homes were built in the early 2000s and don very similar facades. The neighborhood, with its cozy, tight-knit atmosphere and proximity to nearly everything, is what drew Monique and Terrence McWilliams to put down roots in the area. But this isn’t your typical love-at-first-sight home-buying story. In fact, the couple didn’t love much of anything about their new place when they moved there in 2018. But they knew they could make it their own … or at least one of them did. “I thought we were just doing a kitchen remodel,” Terrence says. Monique counters, “He might say that, but I always knew it was going to take a total renovation.” Make that a two-part overhaul, during which every square inch of the home would be transformed. Only the original hardwood flooring would be spared.

EVERYTHING AND THE KITCHEN SINK

hase one, which indeed included a kitchen upgrade, didn’t begin right away. Monique spent nearly three years scouring Instagram for local designers she found inspiring. Nothing spoke to her until she remembered visiting Haus Love at the corner of Kessler Boulevard and College Avenue in Broad Ripple with a friend. Turns out, that friend knew the owner, Heidi Woodman. And this time, it was love at first sight. Terrence and Monique wanted a home that complemented their personalities, which Monique describes as, “edgy and unique, without being too much.” The couple gravitates toward dark, moody color schemes. They wanted warm, rich wood incorporated as focal points. At the same time, they wanted the house to feel welcoming—not harsh and uninviting—because it is a gathering spot. They often host their family and friends, and the home is a landing pad for their teenage children’s friends. Luckily, Woodman welcomed their desire to break from the norm. “Quite honestly, I’m growing tired of the all-white aesthetic,” she says. Aside from the ambience, there wasn’t a laundry list of must-haves for the home. The couple was mainly concerned with two rooms.

In the kitchen, Terrence and Monique were passionate about ceiling-height upper cabinets and a big, stately island. They absolutely did not want to see any stainless steel. Oh, and the adjacent breakfast nook had to stay. Which meant there wasn’t room to expand the footprint.

DOWN TO THE STUDS

ith the clients’ direction, Woodman set to work, enlisting the design skills of Nate Slabaugh, owner of Nathan Alan Design, for the

cabinetry. They ripped out bulkheads that were keeping the cabinets from reaching their full height potential and added beautiful wood beams for interest. The moody vibe entered in the form of gorgeous, black-stained cabinets juxtaposed with earthy walnut ones. And just when you think it’s all too masculine, your eye sweeps across the deep veining of the Viola marble countertop and meets circular, white pendants hanging overhead. Instead of competing, the elements fuse together to create a balance the homeowners hoped to achieve. This room, albeit the most challenging to execute, is without a doubt the most intriguing part of the home.

“I don’t understand how she brought my New York flat–style inspiration to life in our Indiana home, but she did it,” Monique says. “Before, it was cold and traditional. Now, it’s warmer and more inviting.” While Woodman gave the family their favored dark hues, she didn’t take white completely out of her palette. In fact, nearly all of the walls in the home feature a warm white hue. This is how she brought their vision to life without making the home feel small. Slabaugh says good lighting is also key when using dark colors. The next big focus area was Monique’s office. This space took Woodman out of her comfort zone, 2022 | IM HOME

which turns out is “anything with angles.” Of course, the wall in question was load-bearing (cue the HGTV drama music). Despite the physical conundrum, Woodman worked her magic to transform the bland and boring den into a space where Monique feels inspired. It doesn’t feel like an office she has to be in, but rather a place she loves to spend her time. The desk is situated in the center of the room, but when you open the glass-paned French doors, your eye is drawn to the paneling on the back wall.

“It’s very nice to work with clients who respect and understand my craft as a designer, and not just as a decorator. They were very open to my suggestions, and they trusted my vision for them.” The left side of the room is covered in floor-to-ceiling builtin shelves, displaying artwork, books, and other pieces of Monique’s character. There are no knobs to be seen, which keeps the look very sleek and clean. Natural light pours into the space through windows on the right side of the room, framed by a dark-blue wall and matching curtains. This tone-on-tone feature is one of Monique’s favorite parts of the home, even though she originally vetoed the idea, unable to picture the final product. In the end, she

trusted Woodman, and found that the designer’s first instinct—like so many other ideas along the way—was the right one. “It’s very nice to work with clients who respect and understand my craft as a designer, and not just as a decorator,” Woodman says. “They were very open to my suggestions, and they trusted my vision for them.” Case in point: the chandelier hanging in the entryway. Monique says it was the first one Woodman showed the couple, but it gave them “spooky, Halloween vibes.” It wasn’t until the designer came back with other, more vanilla options that the homeowners knew they wanted to go with the bold choice. “She knows we are edgy and not afraid,” Monique says. “She helped us see things together that we wouldn’t have pictured without her.”

The home office goes from drab to fab with a geometric pattern on the wall and built-in bookcases that blend deep-toned walls with woodgrain accents. The new desk, wall sconces and lamp, artwork, and upholstered pieces communicate that this space means business. 2022 | IM HOME

THE SECRET SAUCE

he rest of the downstairs consists of a family room, dining room, half bath, laundry room, and the main bedroom suite. All of these areas are deliberately drenched in the couple’s personality, spread about in the form of paintings, furniture, and details you probably wouldn’t even think are intentional. Consider the enormous paintings that hang above the dining room table. The artwork was in their home already, and Woodman had them reframed in a dark walnut wood to connect to the rest of the space. Or, the stairs that were widened at the bottom to angle and open the staircase up to the entry. In the laundry room, the countertop is actually the old kitchen counter that was saved during the demo. Paired with—you guessed it—wood accents and warm, golden tones, it’s made new again. Another genius detail in this space is the gold inside the hanging black pendants, chosen to match the metallic knobs. Every detail, down to the hidden storage on the back side of the kitchen island and the painted wallpaper accent walls, was artfully chosen with one goal in mind: to bring out the clients’ flair in every inch of their home. Phase two will add this same touch to their basement, creating a space where they can all enjoy the things they love most—sports, family, and social gatherings. Terrence and Monique are the type of people who wear matching track suits but manage to make them look as stylish and fabulous as if they were dressed to the nines. Likewise, their home is grand and cool, but it’s also cozy. It’s a place where you want to take off your shoes and stay awhile.

The homeowners collaborated with Pro Care Horticultural Services and Conservatory Craftsmen to create a scenic transition between the interior of the house and the backyard.

nspiration from overseas travel led an area couple to embark on a unique project to create a stunning conservatory that serves as a gathering place for family and friends. Don and Beth (who requested that their last name be withheld) had long dreamed of adding a British-style glassed structure on the back of their brick home, situated on multiple lots in a tidy development on the southeast side of Indy. “I’m an Anglophile,” says Beth. “I love their decorating styles and cottage gardens. Everything is quirky.” In the United Kingdom, conservatories are popular additions that allow homeowners to experience the outdoors despite the country’s rainy weather and grow plants for enjoyment or food indoors. But fewer Americans augment their homes with these structures. Working with Conservatory Craftsmen, a regional specialist in these uncommon constructions, and the couple’s longtime landscaper, Carmel-based Pro Care Horticultural Services, they created a backyard jewel box—a stunning glass building that opens onto a paved patio with a brick pizza oven and is surrounded by thoughtful landscaping to enjoy during every season. “It was a long time coming,” says Don.

LONG-RANGE GOALS he dream of adding a conservatory had been hatched more than two decades earlier, but the project was sidelined by others that took precedence, such as building out the basement into a hangout spot for the homeowners’ three growing sons. They also bought the lot behind their home to add a pool and a pool house, the landscaping of which marked the beginning of their relationship with Pro Care owner Lowell Rolsky. “We feel indebted to Lowell,” Don explains. “We wouldn’t have anyone else do anything to our property.” Prior to the most recent project, Pro Care added a firepit and layers of landscaping for color, texture, and privacy. Rolsky says he caters to his clients’ appreciation for unique plantings, creates space for Beth to do her own gardening, and makes sure the yard provides points of interest throughout the growing season. “You can almost tell time by what’s happening in the yard,” Rolsky says. Don adds, “There’s always something blooming and happening—it’s continuous. [Lowell’s] a genius.”

A hammock tucked behind the conservatory is a quiet spot to unwind and relax.

A PRIVATE OASIS hen it came time to break ground on the conservatory project, Pro Care salvaged as much existing plant material as possible while creating new hard- and landscape designs to surround the addition. One side featured a flagstone path and fountain that has become a favorite of the local robins. The far side of the conservatory from the house now has a large birdhouse and a hammock area that Don wanted for relaxed afternoons with a book. “When you pull up to the front of the house, you don’t expect it,” Beth says. “This is our private oasis.” They often have guests approach from the walkway around the side of the home to glimpse the conservatory from the exterior. French-style doors open out to a cozy patio with a seating area, a small pergola, a grill, and another of Don’s requests: a wood-fired pizza oven, where the couple recently prepared 30 pies for guests. Pro Care was meticulous in matching the brick for the patio hardscaping to that of the 30-year-old home. “For us, it was just trying to integrate the conservatory into the backyard so it wasn’t something stuck on the back of the house and was instead an expression of their lives and their lifestyle,” Rolsky says. “That’s our biggest hurdle sometimes, to make things look like they were always there. That’s something that we take a lot of pride in creating.” 46

Elements like a stone pathway, fountain, and potting station are surrounded with lush landscaping that provides seclusion and serene beauty.

o build the glass addition with the same attention to seamless integration with the existing home, the couple hired Conservatory Craftsmen, a Minneapolis-based company that installs this specific type of building throughout the country, including projects in Central Indiana and the Cincinnati area. “It’s critical that we respect the design and architecture of the home,” says Jim Hewitt, owner of Conservatory Craftsmen. “That’s why it’s not a one-size-fits-all project. That’s why it has to be custom. When you’re done, the conservatory should look like it belongs there. My philosophy in architecture and design: It should integrate into the house or it should be a folly.” The planning process also involves understanding how the client hopes to use the new space. Through the course of meetings in Minnesota and Indiana, Hewitt learned that family was a big focus of the homeowners’ lives. “I sat in [their] home and realized [they] didn’t have a lot of gathering space,” he says. “I knew right offhand it would be favorable to design a room for the whole family to gather.” Conservatory Craftsmen draws the plans and works with vendors overseas, including in Europe. Hewitt says that a great deal of the materials for the couple’s project originated in England and Belgium. Much of the building is made from mahogany wood.

Over the course of about 10 weeks of construction, the crew used Don and Beth’s garage as a staging area to erect the conservatory, which now connects via double doors to the home’s interior. This integration means the addition gets everyday use by the homeowners.

GREENHOUSE EFFECT he centerpiece of the indoor space is a long, rustic table that the couple uses for meals, projects, and relaxing when not hosting family and friends. A flat-screen TV is mounted on a unique, easel-like stand from Restoration Hardware and is used to watch the morning news. The perimeter of the room, which includes a 12-foot-long antique table sourced from Hoosier Sister, is abundant with plants and has become a showcase for Beth’s succulent garden. “I don’t consider myself to have a green thumb,” says Beth. But since the completion of the conservatory and during the long days of the coronavirus pandemic, Beth began adding to her plant collection from area purveyors, including Dammann’s Garden Company, The Forest Flower Home & Garden Shop, Rosie’s Gardens, Grounded Plant & Floral Co., Allisonville Home & Garden by Sullivan, and Altum’s Garden Center. Fiddle-leaf fig, rattlesnake, bird of paradise, African violet, string of pearls, hoya, sansevieria, and staghorn fern are among the many plants that thrive in the light-collecting, climate-controlled space. “I don’t know much about plants,” says Don. “But I have seen plants come into this space and absolutely flourish.” At the far end of the conservatory is an intimate seating area with two Restoration Hardware chairs Beth sourced from Chairish online and had recovered locally at PAH Upholstery Co. It’s another spot where Don loves to relax with a book. The area is also a perfect vantage point to observe the wildlife that enjoys the landscape Pro Care has been tweaking and refining for the couple. At dusk, owls hoot in the tree canopies that arch over the glassed structure. Squirrels play and bury their nuts on the lawn. The homeowners have also seen raccoons, deer, rabbits, and even a fox.

he space can be enjoyed in all seasons. “When it snows, it’s like being in a snow globe,” Don says. Rain and fog also create a charming vibe inside the conservatory, which has floors with radiant heating covered in Pennsylvania bluestone—a material that continues outside to the patio. Louvered windows can be opened in the spring and fall, and programmable, retractable shades prevent the sun from creating an oven in the hotter months of the year. The completion of the couple’s conservatory and outdoor patio project in the fall of 2019 came at an auspicious time, when the pandemic brought their three sons home to Indiana several months later. “It was perfect because all the boys came home,” Beth says. “Thank goodness we had all the space.”

The multipurpose indoor space can be used for activities like reading, listening to records, dining and entertaining, working from home, or watching TV.

The reunited family spread out around the house to work and study, including at the long table in the conservatory. When pandemic restrictions finally began lifting, their sons returned to their respective homes and Don and Beth reverted to their regular daily use of the space, with plans to do more entertaining. The couple wants to host salon-type gatherings with interesting groups of guests to foster conversations around topics of civic interest and raise money for charitable causes. “We wanted to have a place to entertain and discuss ideas,” says Don, who hopes the space will delight and energize his visitors. “People walk in here and right away they say they feel different.” The couple looks forward to many more days of entertaining family and friends and enjoying their daily lives in the enchanted space they have created. “In life, you’ve got to find your joy—and this is our joy,” says Beth. 2022 | IM HOME
