Score 1 for the Bad Guys 501st Legion and Pink Stumps Day All Photos courtesy of ReneĂŠ Barlow
What do you get when you mix a bunch of star wars fans, with a creative streak and community spirit? The answer, the 501st legion, is a worldwide organisation with over 7000 active members in over 52 countries. Formed in December 2009, The Redback Garrison is the section of the legion based in Queensland, Australia.
With a membership of over 120, and climbing, the Redback Garrison hails from the Gold Coast in the south, to Townsville in the north, and as far west as Toowoomba. The concentration of troopers being from the South East Queensland region. Membership in the garrison requires screen accurate costuming and members are both enthusiastic and quite serious about their committment to their chosen character. Besides the army of stormtroopers, The Redback Garrison hosts an eclectic collection of other Star Wars characters including Darth Vader, Boba Fett and even The Emperor. With such a dastardly gang of baddies, you could be forgiven for ISSUE 2 - APRIL 2015
PAGE 3
assuming there’s evil afoot. While plenty of well humoured shenanigans is part and parcel of a 501st event, the goal is always one of doing good. The cosplay community is a massive one with widespread appeal on a global scale. It’s no surprise to have a group of “baddies” getting together on a regular basis. What makes the 501st Legion noteworthy, is their community spirit and commitment to charity. Since its formation, The Redback Garrison have been involved in many events throughout Queensland. These include the Bridge to Brisbane , MS Moonwalk, Relay 4 Life, The Carnival of Flowers and their largest event, the Star Wars Dreamworld Weekend. The community spirit of the group is especially shown with their regular visits to children in hospital.
The spectacle of the empire marching through the ward would have to be one to behold. Certainly a welcome distraction for anyone who is unwell. They work closely with charities such as The Starlight Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation, Smart Pups, Cancer Council, Red Cross Blood Bank, MS Society and Downe Syndrome Society. On 14th March, 2015 the Reback Garrison participated in their second annual Pink Stumps Day. This charity event takes the form of a 20/20 cricket match, and is played in full costume with additional pink adornments. A cricket match to raise funds for charity is one thing, but when it’s played encased in plastic, lycra and all the other assorted bits involved in the costumes PAGE 4
which are intricately crafted for the garrison, it’s an event to behold. The event was held in conjunction with the Bray Park Primary School fete, adding another community bonus to the day. Stalls encircled the field, with even the bake sale getting in on the act, naming their goods appropriately. Rides for the kids were available, but the main focus was on the field as the bad guys played for a good cause. The Emperor’s XI played the Death Stars in a match which was much more fun to

watch than a bit of grass growing. The Redback Garrison’s wranglers were particularly helpful, given the limitations in flexibility generated by playing in a plastic suit of armour. These important members of the group, without costume, help keep the legion hydrated, and on this day aided in fielding the ball, though the best catches were still had by the costumed army. Complimenting the action on the field, was entertaining commentary by the Redback Garrison’s own Adam “Apok” Lochowicz. While the game provided a great spectacle, the sausage sizzle, and donation boxes being distributed by troop members did the all-important task of fundraising. The annual 501st Legion Pink Stumps Day is an event which not only raises charity funds,
but brings people together. Whether you’re a member of the Redback Garrison, the wider cosplay community, the school community at Bray Park, a Star Wars , or cricket fan , someone who benefits from the funds raised, one of the plethora of photographers who attended, or just someone who likes to see something a little different from time to time, this event is of benefit. With groups like the 501st Legion, how can a person’s spirit not be boosted, let alone that of the wider community. If this is the work of the bad guys, just think what the rest of us are capable of. Just don’t stand in their way. Their aim might be bad, but they don’t always miss. This time, they definitely scored. PAGE 6

At the base of the McPherson range, lies the gateway to Mount Lindesay and Mount Barney, South-east Queensland’s highest peak. Rathdowney was first explored by Captain Logan in 1828, with a large property being established by Thomas Lodge Murray-Prior in 1876 who named the town after Rathdowney in Ireland. John Collins and Sons purchased the property in 1884 and the township began developing around 1910.

Originally involved in timber clearing, Rathdowney’s main industries are now cattlegrazing and dairy farming. The Rathdowney and District Historical Association (RADHA) run the local information centre, as well as organising the annual Rathdowney Heritage Festival.

The Eagle Junction
The Eagle Junction are a Brisbane band bringing old school rock n roll back with a few twists and turns along the way. They are energetic and keen to get out there in the thick of it and make things happen. This is a band which sees their role as a vehicle for those who want to change it up. Heavily influenced by classic rock n roll, they aim to create an energetic atmosphere where people are driven to get dancing and having a good time. Their influence is broad, attracting generations both older and young with backgrounds from business to fellow musicians. They bring a broadening of horizons to those who may not have been into the genre, but can appreciate a live band with a good sound. This is all a bonus for the band whose attitude is, “We don’t care who you are, if you dig us we’ll probably dig you too.” The Eagle Junction understand the benefits of being active as musicians and supporting others in the industry. They’re happy to be in the audience when not on stage, and keen to share the music of those with mutual respect. They also see themselves as part of a wider community with a whole host of people involved in supporting, and being driven by their music. They see the need for those new in their fields to collaborate, including those in photography, graphic design, film and television and recording industries and are eager to help where they can.
ISSUE 2 - APRIL 2015
PAGE 19
The band has a strong emphasis on original music. While a cover with an original twist can be entertaining, they find the creative process inspiring. “It’s great to be able to create an entire song from scratch and be a part of the whole creative process of creating a song out of something as simple as a bass riff or lyric.” The Eagle Junction have been playing as many shows as they can to get their music out and be heard. Their first album will be launched on April 20 and they will join some of their favourite bands Switchblade Suzi and The Plastic Fangs at the launch show. They’ll be distributing the album to not just radio stations, but offering a freebie to people who really get into the music and dance at their shows. The outlook of the band is positive about the live music scene in Australia. They see the diversity and magnitude of bands, venues and festivals in and around Brisbane, however they also see the difficulty in making a living from the industry which so motivates them. They’re happy to see the tides changing from an electronic base to musicians with their instruments on stage, and also appreciate the need to change things up and give the audience a new sound to listen to. They do have a streak of inspired optimism. They can see a change is in the air, with a surge in the popularity of vinyl, and classic bands gaining new and increased popularity. While they can see online promotion becoming fundamental to exposure for bands, they still see a role for record labels in the industry, and believe there is need for new online avenues to help bands reach international audiences, while paying them fairly. “It would be cool to see some new and big festivals emerge in regional Australia, similar to Burning Man festival in Nevada, which have a unique appeal and bring in tourists and people from inner cities who would be willing to travel into regional Australia to attend these sorts of events.”
PAGE 20
The band so far has had great feedback from the community. The sight of people up and dancing while they play is really all the feedback they need, to know they are on to something. You can see The Eagle Junction at 4ZZZ Street Sounds on Saturday 18th April. Their debut album will be released April 20. It will be available to buy on Bandcamp and you can listen on Soundcloud or Youtube. June 21st will be the celebration of their album launch, details opposite.

Art & Soul
Changing Faces - Vicki Clay for Hair & Makeup There are some things we do in our daily lives which we wouldn’t consider to be art. With advances in technology, practically anyone can snap a picture on their phone to capture a moment in time, but it’s certainly not always a piece of art. Similarly, we (especially women) use makeup on a regular basis to groom ourselves, but it’s hardly art when you slap on a bit of something to smooth your complexion, and highlight your bone structure as best you can before you run out the door. Just like taking a picture though, in the hands of a skilled and experience artist, the makeup and hair products become a tool, and our bodies are the canvas to transform a person into an artwork. Vicki Clay is one such artist. Having been in the beauty industry for over 30 years, she has refined and developed her techniques to provide looks not just for special occasions, but photography, theatre and the film industry. Despite her experience and talent, she has an attitude of constant learning, and always looking towards how she can expand her already varied repoitoire. Based in Kooralbyn, Australia, Vicki uses her talents and business acumen in many community based endeavours. The co-founder of local business women group Kooralbyn Kollective, she was hair & makeup artist for the community calendar for 2015, and is currently in preparations for another calendar in 2016. She has also expanded this concept with The Calendar Girls to produce calendars for community groups and charity organisations. She is currently providing hair & makeup for the Beaudesert Amateur Musical Society (BAMS) production, Gallipoli Bill. Vicki has also taken part in events not related to her art, such as organising and manning the Kooralbyn location for Clean Up Australia Day in 2015. The is no doubt that Vicki Clay is an artist in every sense. She has used her skills and expertise to assist her community in many ways, and continues to take every opportunity to boost community spirit with her stunning artistry. PAGE 24

Thanks to Sarah Bellamy from Brisbane band Tesla Coil for being the model for the photoshoot to showcase Vicki’s art. Tesla Coil is a Brisbane-based three-piece alternative rock band. Not alternative in the way the loud-mouth behind you in high school with bleached hair was alternative, but in the way that you put a banjo and a flute into a rock group and call it edgy. Forming in 2013 (depending on who you ask), Fin, Sarah, and James have travelled all around the Brisbane music scene making audiences raise eyebrows at their unorthodox instrumentation and bizarre song themes. www.facebook.com/TeslaCoilBand You can see Tesla Coil at: Capalaba Skate Park - 17th April 4ZZZ Street Soundzzz - 18th April Earcandy, New Globe Theatre - 25th April The Milk Factory - 7th May Redcliffe Leagues Club (With Mental As Anything) - 9th May PAGE 26
