The Food of Life Felton Food Festival

Photos: ReneĂŠ Barlow

We all know food gives life. None of us would be here without its sustenence. It is often forgotten, however, that food sustains so much more than bodily existence. The Felton Food Festival is an annual reminder that food can breather life into a community and give livelihoods to the people within it.

PAGE 4

The Felton Food Festival is an event to behold. The number of people converging on this little town is staggering given its size and location, but it’s easy to see why when you enter the grounds. Community spirit really does come alive when there’s food involved. It’s like a pot-luck dinner on a massive scale with all the vendors bringing the most amazing, fresh and mouthwatering dishes to the table.

Foodies will truly think they’ve died and gone to flavour heaven. There’s a plethora of market stalls with everything from straight-off-the-farm wares to all the unique things others create with this local and beautifully fresh produce. Added to that is a vast array of food that’s hot and ready to eat. The queues really speak for themselves. With the huge variety of food on offer, it’s no surprise that it was beautifully complimented with locally produced beer. It’s also no surprise that the beer tent had the longest queue.

PAGE 6

As much as the Felton Food Festival is about the food, it still wouldn’t be complete without music. The rustic space under a large gum tree with solo artist playing songs to compliment the atmosphere was a great touch. The calibre of musicians under the marquee, complete with hay bale seating for the attentive audience, was surprising.

It is fantastic to see crowds of people coming to enjoy a day to celebrate food which is close to the source in so many ways. With a festival funded by donation entry, it’s even more heartwarming to know it’s about so much more than food. The community spirit shown by the people of Felton and surrounds is strong, and it is with this they are soaring, straight into a bright, successful future. PAGE 8

Soundboard Eye On Stone

Eye On Stone is a band with a strong spirited core. their storytelling songs eminate from a collective experience and an empathetic group attitude. The band sees their role as somewhat journalistic. They are a conduit to knowledge and their music allows them to “document this moment in history, while enteretaining and enjoying the experience”. The themes of their songwriting stretch from work/ life balance through to illegal substances, and domestic violence. With this vast array of material and a rhythmically driven, solidly played sound, it’s easy to see why Eye On Stone appeals to a broad demographic. They’re keen to support worthy causes whenever they can too. Notably, they played ‘Rocking The Homeless’ last year in support of this worthy cause. It’s not only with their musician hats on that the band shows this huge community spirit. With a psychologist and nutritionist on board, it’s clear the members care about society at large. Powerhouse drummer Dee volunteers with charity Oz Harvest who help distribute surplus produce to those in need.

While Eye On Stone focus on originals, they are open minded about the world of cover bands:

“Plenty of original musicians started out on covers. Hey, The Beatles started out playing covers! The trick is not to get bogged down playing classic rock and imagining you are “successful” while making middle aged drunks in a leagues club spill their drinks on the dance floor.” The band is quick to take opportunities when they present themself. In addition to playing every chance they get, they have made themselves heard across a range of social media and have an EP and video clip in the works. They believe the key to enhancing the live, original music scene in Australia, including regional areas, is airplay. It is being heard across radio and TV waves that gets butts off seats and into venues. This, of course, is no easy feat for any band. Feedback from audiences is positive, and it’s easy to see why. Eye On Stone have an optimistic spirit which shines through their music. With talent and experience on board, it’s a combination that makes listening a very cool experience. PAGE 12

Gamerverse Exploding Kittens

All Photos by Reneé Barlow Creative Services

When you think of cartoons, like most, you probably think more of comic book superheroes in epic battles against evil villains. There’s a new breed of cartoonist, however, and its poster-child is a quirky anti-hero known as The Oatmeal. Matthew Inman’s comics range from the ridiculous, to biographical, to political commentary, always with a hint of identifying insanity. It is from this ridiculous genius that Exploding Kittens has emerged. Funded by the most backed Kickstarter campaign in history, Exploding Kittens now comes in both physical and digital form with apple and android apps available for a nominal fee. The gameplay is fairly simple, but always different and more intense the longer the game lasts. Essentially you’re trying not to explode. There’s all sorts of ways to avoid it, and unleash it on your opponents. In the end though, there will only be one that avoids the big kaboom.

PAGE 22

Demographic - Exploding kittens is fun for all the family. As long as kids can read, and won’t be too disturbed by the warped notions of the game, then they can grasp the gameplay. There are also two versions available so if you’re not quite game for the NSFW version, you can go easy. Group Size - There’s only so many cards in a deck so it’s generally a 2-5 person kinda game. There’s definitely scope to play a solitaire creation if you were that way inclined, and extra decks would allow for additional players. Difficulty - This one really is a bit of a no-brainer. It’s a great one for non-gamers to go with, and equally great for a night of drunken debauchery where cognition may be impared (but of course, drink responsibly). Nerd Level - No nerds were harmed in the making of this game, nor are they needed. Kittens are a whole other story. Not recommended for PETA members and/or those lacking a sense of humour.
