ust as many artists of the early 20th century went to Paris to study with the masters, today’s artists who are interested in realism travel to Spain for the same reasons. Takahiro Hara left his native home of Japan in 1994 and 1995 and traveled to Spain to study with the master Antonio Lopez. During that time period, Hara spent a summer at a resort a little outside of Madrid with Lopez. And it was there where Hara 110

learned many important lessons about painting realism. “Lopez told me often to look at things and search from the inside for my own colors and forms,” says Hara. “I believe that it is not necessary to draw precisely to create realism.” While Hara favors a very minute and detailed form of realism, he does not see them as being merely photographic in nature. “One cannot put into a photograph pureness,” says Hara. “Pureness equals the spirit INDEX

of the painting. Spanish artists talk about the ‘unique language’ of a painting and this really hits the point in the meaning of pureness through the eyes of the artist as well as the unified method of transmission, including the texture of the painting and the space that is brought together through the original style of the artist.” For a direct link to the exhibiting gallery go to w w w.
