Curator’s Statement
FourSquared 2018 is a unique exploration of the works of sixteen Bay Area artists. Each of the artists has produced sixteen small works, presented in sixteen clusters giving the audience the experience of sixteen micro solo exhibitions. All works are priced under $500. This 9th annual exhibition is a reflection of the curator's strong and abiding interest in local, affordable art represented here by some of our most talented local artists. Curator: Michael Yochum is founding partner of Arc Gallery & Studios. He has been active in the Bay Area art community for over 30 years and is a past chairman of ArtSpan. While his current day job is in the finance industry, his academic background, both undergraduate and graduate, is art history. The other partners, Priscilla Otani and Stephen Wagner, have also been involved in the curation of this iconic annual exhibition at Arc Gallery.

#inthesky #inthesky is an inspired series of mobile photographs. Shot spontaneously, these images capture tension from the ground up, and portray the volatile relationship between the sky and the urban landscape. Void of color, these melodramas contrast fleeting moments of beauty, strength and vulnerability, all of which takes place #inthesky

Counterpoint Studios Bridgework Lisa Levine and Peter Tonnigsen are two Bay Area photographers and educators with more than forty years of collective experience working in arts and education. We are interested in using multiple-imagery to visually characterize landscape, community, or a sense of place and aim to push the limitations of a singular vision towards a more fluid and complex perspective by interweaving two creative voices. For the past several years we have been collaborating on a photo-based approach that we believe offers an exciting and inventive interpretation of the photographic document. Our creative process begins with a repetitive shooting and exchange of 35mm film to create a series of layered photographic exposures depicting multidimensional perspectives of time and place. We each begin with a single roll of film and walk around a defined place photographing various scenes and landmarks throughout that area. That film is then rewound, exchanged, and we duplicate this process right over the top of what the other artist has just photographed, eventually creating a surprising and complexly layered document of that place. We then scan the multiple exposed films and rework these scenes to accentuate selected formal and contextual components. This unique synthesis between digital and analog technologies relies on the distinctive characteristics and possibilities of each, yet also unites them into an aesthetically imaginative and innovative form. Opposing the singularity and clarity of conventional direct photographic representation, and embracing the serendipitous wonder of this atypical process, the resulting photographs are visually rich compositions that describe a creative interchange composed of fragments of information, time, and space. Our work is fundamentally about discovery; what we come upon during our photographic wanderings, what we learn about the idiosyncrasies defining particular communities, and most importantly, how our audiences can share in our discovery and return to our work over and over again to locate the familiar and enjoy finding new details. website: http://www.counterpointphoto.com email: counterpointphoto@yahoo.com

The Fruits Of Our Labor Painting directly from life presents the artist with a unique challenge: to attempt to convey the feelings that are evoked by the motif as it is considered by the eye, distilled by the mind, and given over to the hands to set down again in physical form as a two dimensional image; one that retains a fidelity to what is seen but is also uniquely transformed. The fruits and vegetables chosen for this series present an additional challenge: to capture the colors, textures and fullness of volume while they are at their maximum capacity and dynamism. The degradation of color and form occurs quickly, especially in those objects where the interior has been exposed. Given this constraint, as well as the quick drying properties of working on paper, it was necessary that each of these paintings be executed in a single day. The title of this series I chose because I wanted to acknowledge all the labor involved in the journey of one organic object from planting to harvesting, distributing, selling, it’s depiction in paint, and finally composting. In addition, there are the myriad individuals who were involved in the manufacture and distribution of the supplies used to make the painting, from paper (France) to wood panels (US), brushes (Germany), pigments (multiple nations), oil (US) and resin (Canada). The labors of all these people across the globe come together in each small work of art.

Ten Words, Five Songs and a Poem Depth, layer, texture, nuance, pattern, and foremost text – this is what always moves me. I’ve have a love affair with words and have been collecting them for a decade from a daily email from dictionary.com. These rarely used, obscure words give such richness and seem magic. In both my curatorial practice and my own work, the focus has been on activist, social justice art on current polarizing, hard-hitting issues. This series for 4Squared and more in progress, focus on the inherent beauty and positivity that can surround us, if we let it. Glimmers of hope in derisive times. This series was a time-intensive, labor of love. The original 48x48”, epoxy resin coated base painting was cut into squares and glued to cradle board. I had poured about 20 quarts of paint Pollock style, one at a time, let it dry, sanded it and poured more. It then got two more layers of resin to suspend the colored vellum transparency paper and the text. In addition to the ethereal, dreamy words, I also included stanzas from my favorite songs and a poem. This could be the ultimate playlist that describes my faith, hope, dreams and wishes. I hope they will resonate with others too—a visual reminder about mindfulness and intention for love and a better world. Karen Gutfreund is an artist and a feminist/activist curator, born in Lexington, Kentucky and came to California via NYC. She is a co-partner in Gutfreund Cornett Art, an organization that creates art as activism exhibitions “changing the world through art” and actively promotes the work of activist artists with national touring exhibitions. Currently, Karen has an exhibition of her own activist work touring the country with more in progress.

All That Glitters I create photomontages that interweave images of nature celebrated against a backdrop of stock indexes from financial newspapers. The juxtaposition of nature and commerce places these values vying for attention in the same space. After digitally manipulating composited photos, I create prints that I handwork on rice paper. These prints are then scanned in, reconfigured, then printed with UV cured acrylic ink on Acrylite and backed with a wooden panel gilded in gold metal leaf. My materials suggest a subtext of desire and falsehood. The surface mimics the clarity and sheen of water, though the material is synthetic. As gold symbolizes wealth and opulence, nature becomes reflected as a commodity. But the gold metal is merely a perception of gold, representing a false sense of abundance. All that glitters is not gold. What we assume to be an endless supply is, in fact, an illusion. I want viewers to be lured by the beauty of nature and ensnared by the conscience of conservation.

Infrastructure I am a drawer experimenting with hybrid forms of drawing that integrate the traditional with the digital. It seems silly not to use the digital advances that are given us but also it’s silly not to reflect on how these advances corral our thinking. I’ve settled on a hybrid approach that blends both, hopefully using the advantages of each. I began by drawing in situ using a simple drawing app and my finger, so I can catch the immediacy of plein air. Then I print the drawing and transfer it using carbon paper onto the panel. And finally, I begin coloring with colored pencil. That worked well for the first few pieces but then it was too hot, too windy or I’d have to sit out in traffic to get the angle I wanted. Plus I wanted to get the bizarre color combinations so I was taking reference pictures anyway. So I jettisoned the drawing part and kept on. Why Infrastructure and why these anonymous pipes? For something that we mostly don’t even notice, they are colored strangely. If the infrastructure fails, we panic. When it works we are woefully unaware of its basic features. How many of us know what part of the electrical grid we are in? Where is the main gas line, water main, sewer connection? Drawing these was my way of studying them. I know now that most of these are water shut-offs or standpipes for the fire department; the gas connections are in mesh cages and frequently covered with a locked bag (not too interesting to draw); and the electrical is in steel boxes.

Homage to San Francisco “A city is not gauged by its height and width, but by the broadness of its vision and the height of its dreams.” Herb Caen After almost 40 years of living in San Francisco I’m still in love with it and excited by it visually – as well as culturally – in so many ways. I still turn corners and come upon views that take my breath away. It’s those moments that I want to communicate through this series of small cityscape paintings. A number of the paintings in this series started life as plein air sketches. Others came from photos taken around town. My camera (phone) is always at the ready to capture serendipitous moments that may later turn into paintings in my studio. San Francisco never fails to offer compelling compositions and interesting subject matter: unique neighborhoods, animated streetscapes, sweeping and dramatic views, beautiful architecture, classic cars, soft light filtered through a foggy atmosphere. Everyday there’s street theater unfolding. San Francisco is a city with soul. This series is my homage to it.

Fleur Squared The goal of my work is to make people happy. I combine acrylic paint and hand-cut illustrations that I've created over the past two decades to develop surreal floral compositions. I finish each piece with an epoxy resin worked with a creme brĂťlĂŠe torch. For my series, Fleur Squared, my intention was to create strong individual compositions that also spoke to each other in the larger context, much in the same way that flowers in nature display their individual beauty while commingling and communicating with their floral neighbors.

Shag I manipulate tinted epoxy resin to create abstractions. I begin each piece by choosing the colors. The colors reflect a feeling but can also impact my emotional self. As I pour, a form begins to appear on the surface and a dialogue begins. These forms are similar to characters in a play. They speak to me and guide me to create their shape. Eventually, they interact and engage with one another. There is an unspoken language between them, one I cannot hear but instead, feel. The language has an emotional value that taps into a different part of our brain. The challenge in creating this type of abstraction is leaving the emotion unidentified. With each artwork, my intent is to create an experience. I allow the viewer to think, feel and find their unique significant meaning.

Morphology Morphology is the study of how things are put together – whether observed in nature, the assembly of physical parts or even the structure of words. This series grew out of my ongoing fascination with rearranging individual components of everyday objects to create unlikely parings resulting in new ways to interpret their original forms. I’m transfixed by the myriad details of the most common of things in our lives. The fundamental characteristics and patterns of how things are put together – and how they come apart – provide the pathway for flea market treasures to be reborn as sculptures. A common thread in this series, is the shared history of the butcher block and stone countertops I’ve used for the mounting bases – both having been sourced from reclaimed building materials of Bay Area remodeling projects. Patinas, dents, dings and detritus of our daily lives are my palette. These sculptures honor the craftsmanship of the original objects along with their age-related blemishes allowing an opportunity to be appreciated anew.

SLITS During the summer I travel for two and a half months to both do my drawing and teach drawing workshops. This has been happening since 2001. During this time I’ve created chosen families and homes away from home. I have come to realize that however comfortable and familiar I feel I am, what I experience is only a small opening into their yearround lives. This is the mind set that pushed me to create the series titled: “SLIT, a Small View into the Whole” Each of the drawings was done plein air on location in France, Morocco, Portugal and New England. Each represents places and activities I’ve experienced over the years I’ve traveled there, each has a small taste of the larger whole. Together, the drawings represent the unfolding of a long summer voyage viewed in pieces.

DIANE OLIVIER developed her love for drawing in childhood and she has been at it ever since. She did some painting but quickly returned to the dance on paper which is her first love. She works in all drawing materials, traditional and non-traditional, with a special emphasis in pastels. The drawings can vary in size from ten feet to as small as 4 inches. Her work can be divided into landscapes, figures and books (sketchbooks and transformed books). EDUCATION 1986 1985 1978

Echo Drawn to quietness, subtlety and understatement, I strive to evoke the mood, luminosity and texture of space, light and organic form. I am drawn to feeling, rather than ideology or narrative, and to the subliminal emotions brought about by our reactions to the environments that surround us. My work seems to evolve in a cyclical rather than a linear form – as I explore new directions, I will circle back to previous expressions and reinterpret them based on more recent pieces. This is due to a number of factors: I tend to investigate multiple interests at the same time, and will develop one particular direction before revisiting another one; I also like to let ideas and images marinate in my brain and my body, and find that they subsequently emerge as different forms of mark-making. As a result, FourSquared is an opportunity to directly juxtapose the different visual manifestations of the things that inspire me, with the grouping of the sixteen pieces acting as a visual snapshot of the different directions I continue to explore. I primarily use paper, wax, oil paint, watercolor, India Inks and acrylic washes, borrowing techniques from printmaking (dry point, chine collÊ) and combining materials in new and unexpected ways, through the use of rhythmic gestures and repetitive patterns. Using the interplay of line work, texture, and color, I seek to balance simplicity of expression with rich sensory qualities.

Under the Veil Under the Veil is a series of subconscious, dream-state images with narratives that are symbolic, obtuse, and open to interpretation. The scenes are varied and will likely impart different meanings for each viewer - be they beatific or unsettling. Like the foggy recollections one experiences when awakening from a deep slumber, the meanings embedded within each need to be divined. Our process for the series utilized a variety of techniques. The location photographs were shot in Japan, Italy, Switzerland, Tunisia, and California. For the scenarios not sourced in the world at large, we crafted and textured interiors, scenery, objects, and birds with CG. The figures and cat were live models shot in our studio. The resulting imagery is a combination of CG elements, composited photographs, and digital painting which blurs the lines between the media. The images were printed in-house using archival pigments on Moab Lasal Matte paper, then permanently dry-mounted on gessoed 3/4 maple plywood. The prints were handpainted with encaustic wax that was further enhanced with pan pastels, oil pigment sticks, and metallic pastels. We find combining our meticulously crafted prints with the somewhat unpredictable, organic process of encaustics results in an intimate give and take with the works. It is a multi-step process that speaks to both our perfectionism and conflicting belief in the Japanese practice of wabi-sabi, and we cherish the resulting unique, one-of-a-kind artworks.

Induction The word Induction has many definitions...and more than one can be used to describe these pieces. However, the most fitting definition is: the process by which the fate of embryonic cells is determined from the action of adjacent cells, and morphogenetic differentiation is brought about. My approach in making these pieces mirrors is that each section or "cell" is painted and assembled in a way that is determined by the preceding section, constantly changing and growing. The pieces started to evolve in other ways as well... horizontal elements became vertical, wall hanging pieces became table top pieces, and the proportions changed along with those. My goal is to turn these materials into timeless objects of contemplation, calmness, and growth. To me they are modern totems. The formats are usually exaggerated rectangles, horizontal or vertical, and contain patterns and colors that convey a sense of harmony with nature. The pieces seem to have a history and purpose, like artifacts from another time and place, and at their best, make a connection to the now.

This Is Where I Draw The Line For almost thirty years I’ve lived and painted in Bolinas which certainly has, in a Durrellian sense, its own singular Spirit of Place and where the local ideation of Mother Nature impacts most things. I avoid the abstract, embrace fictive narrative. I’m an antiquarian, I suppose. For many years I worked chiefly with acrylic on canvas. I used a lot of color, but recently not so much. My paintings (acrylic on wood oval panels), collectively titled This Is Where I Draw The Line, focus on idiomatic etymology: visual patois lingering from past times but perhaps still germane to this somewhat atypical time.

Jim Winters Rambling - Queer Landscapes How can a landscape be queer? To me a queer landscape is somewhere ordinary that you don’t particularly notice at first, a place that captivates only through sustained looking. It is the unflattering view of some attraction that you pass by for the more popular vista, or that you happen by at the wrong entrance. I prefer the unremarkable and the unsightly. The backside of things... As the title suggests, this series presents queer life and its environs as a rambling experience that like a plant or weed grows, spreads and infiltrates in all directions. It can be anywhere.. I also happened to be rambling (walking, drifting, wandering) when I took the source photos. I am drawn to mundane locations – scenes crisscrossed with electric wires, traffic intersections, convenience markets. The places we pass through every day. Some are more ‘picturesque’ than others – I appreciate the sweeping city view as much as the old motel. When placed together, these broad views become just as ordinary as the more quotidian locales. In reducing the number of colors from my usual ten per print, down to a single (transparent) one, I am trying to make more from less. Transparent ink, when layered upon itself, becomes more solid and darker - in this case, 6 layers makes 6 shades per print. This collection of screen prints are made by hand from from snapshots that I took in Santa Cruz and vicinity (where I live), San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York. With the same technology we use to GPS or scroll through Instagram, these source images were captured on my phone, casually, in a flash of inspiration. website: https://jimwinters.com/ email: jimwinters.com@gmail.com
