About the Exhibition “Voyage”

The exhibition “Voyage” covers a wide range of interpretations by artists, including documentation or memory of a trip taken, the anticipation of a voyage, a trip to an imagined destination, a wandering without a specific destination in mind, and various passages of one’s life, a path of discovery, or an exploration of one’s mind.

We are all inventors, each sailing out on a voyage of discovery, guided each by a private chart, of which there is no duplicate. The world is all gates, all opportunities.

About Arc Gallery & Studios

Founded in 2011, Arc Studios & Gallery features ten artist studios, a 1,000 square foot art gallery, two smaller galleries and an art education center, along with the Kearny Street Workshop office, the San Francisco Artist Network office and Cafe Suspiro Coffee Shop. Arc is located at 1246 Folsom Street between 8th and 9th Streets in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. Arc supports the making of quality art in all media, provides a nurturing environment for artists to create their work, builds a community of artists to encourage exploration of art, provides resources for the professional development of visual artists, and promotes appreciation of the visual arts in the City of San Francisco.

Juror Statement

Emilee Enders

Bedford Gallery, Walnut Creek, California Statement

It's rare that we are presented with an opportunity to explore the meaning of a singular word. At the outset of jurying this exhibition a voyage in its own right I suspected I would be drawn to more literal interpretations of the theme but, to my delight, I was immersed in a realm of creativity that approached Voyage from every possible angle using varied media and skilled techniques.

Some of the artists in this exhibition chose to convey trips and vacations to stunning locations while others turned inward and traveled to mystical dream worlds and through portals to other dimensions. Several artists turned to current events focusing on complicated pandemic journeys, climate change and the heartbreaking voyages of those forced to flee their homelands. I also discovered humorous works, chronicling life on public transit.

What I found to be so remarkable was the boundless curiosity and creative spirit represented in each work. I hope you have an equally exciting experience as you wander through Voyage.
