Curator’s Statement Arc Fine Arts Consulting was established as a natural extension of the mission of Arc Gallery and Studios. Arc is dedicated to showcasing and promoting emerging and established artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since establishing Arc in 2010, the Gallery and Project Gallery have provided exhibition opportunities for over 1000 mostly local artists. Our artist studios are the working home for 15 outstanding local artists. Our goal has been to foster community; providing an arc between our vibrant Bay Area art scene and its art enthusiasts, collectors and businesses. Our consultants are uniquely qualified to build bridges between these communities. Collectively, the partners share over fifty years of experience in art galleries, art consulting, art non-profit volunteering & management, and art-related academic training. Our extensive experience and personal involvement with local art organizations, in particular, has allowed us to build an unrivaled network of relationships with artists here in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are blessed with some of the most prestigious art schools in the country. On a per capita basis San Francisco boasts a higher percentage of working artists than any other city in the country. The opportunity for local collectors and businesses to build collections which tap into and support these communities is unparalleled. Arc Fine Arts is singularly dedicated to fostering those connections. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work with The Infinity in curating their lobbies in San Francisco. And, we appreciate their strong commitment to working with local artists. Matthew J Frederick
Matthew Frederick presents an unconventional and amusing spin on the genre of still life painting by capturing the whimsical shadows and shapes cast from ordinary objects. Often inspired bycommon Icons, his style is characterized by the careful balance of structure, color, lighting and mood. His compositions are rendered with a resplendent color palette of generous applications of paint and undulating brushwork, lending to a compelling emulation of the patterns and sensations inherent in nature. “My intention is to make dynamic imitations, a déjà vu for the mind that will encourage viewers to examine their surroundings with a fresh perspective. I present nature and structure with a delightful whimsy that reminds the public to turn their head and look again next time they pass something familiar that has lost its allure.” Emboldened with lively energy, Frederick’s collection of striking still lifes’ are executed in a truly distinctive style, resulting in visual imprints of the physical world that draw attention to its most striking features.

Jenny Phillips
Everyday, I walk. My neighborhood clings to a hillside; high above the bay, the hill’s geology slowly erodes, exposing evidence of human life interwoven into the nature of things. Here I find colored leaves, swirling grasses, a netted fruit bag, twigs, chert, shadows, fog and smoke, scraps of wire, a piece of broken fence. Each little encounter is full of sensation and texture: each discovery is both extraordinary and ordinary. I strive to absorb these inherent tempos whether from the meter of my step, the rhythm of the seasons, or a sense of fleeting and tenuous beauty. It is these subliminal emotions, these qualities of time, that I try to capture in my work. From these daily experiences, I distill the essence of everyday wonder into its simplest form. I make murals, monoprints, encaustic paintings, and mixed media work. I experiment with scale and texture, inviting spontaneity through honed and suspended physical gestures. I learn to hold back and to allow spaciousness to arise; I find not much is often enough. My multidisciplinary approach relies on a variety of materials such as paper, thread, wax, natural pigments, papier mâché, inks, watercolor and washes, acrylic paint and found objects. I experiment with materials and spontaneous gestures — I cut, splash, line, fill, smooth, crunch, crinkle, and clip. Discarded remnants are a major source of inspiration; I use and reuse almost all of any one material in the making process. Painted paper photographed for one series can become the subject of a mural, then used in an encaustic piece, or sewn onto something else. I’m interested in the lifespan of objects, how they can be seen from different perspectives and used in unexpected ways.
