ABOUT SACRED & PROFANE Sacred: things that inspire awe and reverence. Profane: everything else that is mundane, common or vulgar. This exhibition brings together conflicting images of the sacred with those that are profane. Some works focus on depicting one perspective over the other, while others explore their juxtaposition and the resulting synergy, tension or irony. In Sacred & Profane, the gallery walls become a battlefield between right and wrong.

ABOUT ARC GALLERY Arc supports the making of quality art in all media, provides a nurturing environment for artists to create their work, builds a community of artists to encourage exploration of art, provides resources for the professional development of visual artists, and promotes appreciation of the visual arts in the City of San Francisco.

Juror’s Statement for Sacred & Profane Kim Larson When I was contacted about the show idea of Sacred & Profane, I felt a personal connection to the theme right away. From an art history perspective, I drew analogies between medieval religious iconography and the pop art movement and the interesting ways that they could work together in a modern context. I was excited to see how contemporary artists took the two concepts of “sacred” and “profane” and translated them onto the canvas in their individual artworks. When jurying the exhibition, I was looking for artists who were taking on aspects of sacred, profane and, especially, a combination of the two to create a synergic objective. The standout pieces would play with the interactions between the two in an imaginative and unique way; be it an assemblage reliquary made of everyday objects or a photograph in a commonplace setting with a supernatural, otherworldly implication. These works make the viewer question what it is that inspires reverence and what it is we consider to be obscene—and perhaps question our thoughts on both within the context of our culture.

Kim Larson is the Gallery Director and Co-Owner at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco's historic North Beach neighborhood. Opened in June 2010, the gallery features monthly exhibitions of established and emerging artists. The gallery's contemporary aesthetic ranges from realism to surrealism with a strong focus on illustrative painting and representational sculpture. Kim is a founding member and acting Director of North Beach First Fridays and is a proud member of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association. http://www.moderneden.com
