What are the roots of Cultural Resilience in historic towns of Egypt? -Resilience that has allowed communities to maintain their life-ways and historic built environment in the face of change over the centuries :

Resilience of “Social Town encoded in the links from private to increasingly public spaces in the built environment

Resilience of traditional street markets reflected in micro-level street design and commercial interaction Overhanging elements create a sense of enclosure and control the perspective of the market customers, channeling their attention on to the items being sold

Shops and their extensions almost block the entire fronts of the buildings, making the secondary profile more readable then the primary profile

Direct dialogue between shopper and shopkeeper takes place not inside a shop but at its entrance where shopkeepers sit Transactions are community “theatre

Resilience of the historic town reflected in macro-level morphology: neighbourhoods, bazaars and religious places Seen in the formal pattern of spaces which reflects social structure and relations; not a random pattern, on the contrary, it is rich with meaning A pattern of concealed entry points, vistas, clusters and “invisible spatial divisions

Sacred spaces which form a “web” or “net” of inter-visible religious structures piercing the skyline and serving as way-finding markers through the maze of the city streets below

Cultural Resilience comes from: • The maintenance of these Urban Fabric and linkages of private and community space •Continuity of use and footprint – maintaining the spatial patterns that position people and places within a mutually understood context •Social Capital made tangible

•Maintenance of the traditional customer-shopkeeper interface, both physical and social •Core cultural values of community, communication and sharing of activities and space reflected in market plan and use •The interplay of fixed, semi-fixed and unfixed elements on the street which creates an “intimate” space that is confined, visually directed and human scale

Multi-sensory environment that provides users with valued Sense of Place

Maintaining existing usage as a priority over change of use, even when reuse is more economically attractive

Protecting core cultural values of community, communication and sharing of activities and space reflected in market plan and use

Religious buildings, cultural diversity and archeological buildings are characteristic of historic cities

-Social Road: The Social Road is a path in heart of project and this road is renewal of a material located at area of Magara El-ayon . the area will be transformed in an independent culture centre through a process which aims to exploit the energy of spontaneous and informal uses, pursuing an extremely low financial budget available. We believe that this would be good attempt to face the state of depression, crisis and lack of resources for which our cities are suffering. The project proposes a free space for creativity, experimentation and social interaction of users.
