Mohamed Tarek Beshir Architecture Student

I have always had a passion for architecture and parametric design. I dont know when it started exactly, but I am always intrigued by design everywhere I go. Whether it be buildings on the playstation or historic life museums in the countries I’ve traveled to. I value computational design and the digital platforms that are used as tools to bring this to life, but I maintain my strong believe in hands -on experimentation. I have always been know for my creativity since school; sketching, crafting, and making models whenever I had the chance to. This course has really helped unleash my potential and creative thought. I am also grateful that it has tied me to all the tools and programs that will put my skills to good use.

The Role of Wind In Parametric Forming Wind flow as an architectural element in parametric design. Sand is fomed by weathering of mountains into small rock particles that form massive bodies of sand The flow of wind manipulates the sand by the continous aggrivation (saltation) of sand particles into mountinous curved forms. These forms are parametric in nature as they are constantly maleable as the amount of wind flow determines the type and form of the dunes.

Steps

Inserting plastic wrap as a base layer

Finalising the plasticine formwork

Portfolio

Adding plasticine extrusions to create curves

Inserting a towel as a fabric forming layer

Creating connections between curves for overall form

Inserting plastic wrap to protect and provide a texture

Adding flat surfaces to provide diversity in elevation

Creating a void in the center of the given form

9

Final Outcome

Reflection: The plastic wrap created an interesting texture and effect on the bottom part of the form. The sand dunes inspired forms was created succesfuly in elevation, however, is quite insignificant in plan view. The void in the center of the model is quite dominant and taking focus away from the surrounding curved elevations. The thickness and durabilty of the gypsum mould is quite adequate. The plasticine was a succesful and fast attempt at creating the formwork for the curved sand dune inspired surfaces.

REFLECTION

This course was quite a inspiring journey from start to end in many various ways.

Starting with experimenting with gypsum and how physical fabrication is produced

really helped me understand the materiality and tectonic nature of gypsum or on a larger scale concrete. This practice provided me with a hands-on experience to explore many different techniques like casting and fabric forming. Experiencing the gypsum in liquid form and molding it into the solid form i imagined in my head beforehand was the first inspiring experience in this course.

Furthermore, I was truly anticipating the switch from physical to digital fabrication on rhino and grasshopper. However, at the start the learning curve for grasshopper was

quite tedious at the start. I was too overwhelmed with the surplus of information and coding and felt like it drifted away from designing in the native manner. As i became more familiar with grasshoppper i found it quite an essential program for design and especially parametric design. I started utilizing grasshopper in different courses like design studio as it was quite the time saver.

In Conclusion, 473 has provided me with a new tool of expertise that makes me confidently able to create forms and structures that were only possible to create using

2D skteches and imagination. This course has truly added a brand new dimension to my design process.
