THE ORGANIC AND FLOWING NATURE OF THE MODEL IS ROOTED IN THE SPRINKLED LAYOUT OF BUILDINGS —NOT ORTHOGONAL.

THE SENSE OF ADVENTURE AND MYSTERY FROM THE MODEL TAKE FORM IN THE COMPOSITION OF THE ARCADE AND THE STAIRS. THE ARCADE HELPS IN EXTENDING THE VIEW ACROSS BUILDINGS TO ENGAGE CURIOSITY AS YOU WALK UP THE STAIRS. RENDERING NEXT PAGE

COMMUNITY CENTER OBJECTIVE THE FOCUS OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO REPURPOSE AN EXISTING SPACE AS A TIBETAN COMMUNITY CENTER.

SITE 585 SMITH STREET, BROOKLYN, NY, 11231

SYNTHESIS FACADE: THE NON-STATIC GESTURE OF THE BUILDING ON THE RIVERSIDE IS WAY OF REMINDING ALL OF TIBET’S TRAGIC HISTORY. THE CURVED WALLS ALSO ACT INVITATION FOR HAVEN.

GLASS DIVISION: THE MIDDLE, GLASSED, PARTITION’S ROOF ACTS AS A BRIDGE. EVERY TIME SOMEONE WALKS OVER IT, THE BUDDHIST LESSON OF IMPERMANENCE IS DISCUSSED ON THE GROUND LEVEL AS MORTALITY BECOME VERY OBVIOUS.

CIRCULATION: CIRCULATION FROM ONE AREA TO ANOTHER IS EXTENDED SO THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO CROSS PATHS WITH OTHER PEOPLE.

LEFT: THE GLASS BRIDGE/ROOF OVER THE ENTRY LOBBY. THE GLASS IS AN HOMAGE TO THE TIBETAN NOMADIC LIFESTYLE AND VAST OPEN HORIZONS. PORTIONS OF THE GLASS ARE MEANT TO BE FROSTED TO CREATE PRIVACY. ALSO THE GLASS’ TRANSPARENCY AIDS ON TRANSMITTING THE IDEA OF IMMORTALITY TO THE PEOPLE BELOW. THIS AWARENESS OF LIFE BEING FLEETING IS A KEY TEACHING POINT IN BUDDHISM; IT IS NOT THE MAIN POINT OF THE TEACHING, BUT IT IS EASILY FORGOTTEN.

LEFT: THE BUILDING’S SCALE AND VOLUME IS RESPECTED DUE TO PRESERVATION NEEDS AND THERE IS A CASTLE-LIKE QUALITY REMINISCENT OF TIBETAN MONASTERIES THE CORTEN STEEL RAIN SCREEN BALANCE OUT THE GLASS LOBBY AT THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING.

THE DURAHOME(ABOVE) IS A 24 BY 50 FOOT LONG MODULAR HOUSE. IT WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY SOLAR DECATHLON. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COMPETITION WAS TO INFORM THE PUBLIC THAT RENEWABLE ENERGIES COULD BE THE SOLE SOURCE OF POWER TO A HOME. MY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE TEAM WERE ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE. SPECIFICALLY, I WAS CHARGED WITH CONSTRUCTION OF THE WALLS, POSITIONING OF THE FOOTINGS, COLUMNS, BEAMS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROOF.

THE FOLLOWING PROJECT ANALYZES VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOUVER SYSTEM FOR A SOUTH FACING FAÇADE THROUGH DIVA.

BASEMENT

PARLOR LEVEL

SECOND LEVEL

THIRD LEVEL

THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO ASSESS IF THE PROPOSED FAÇADE MET THE EXPECTATION OF CONTROLLING DAYLIGHT AT AROUND 300 LUX FOR THE INTERIOR. THE DAYLIGHT LEVELS RECEIVED IN PERIMETERS SHOW THAT LEVELS RECEIVED OVER TIME ARE AT 300 LUX. GLARE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS ARE HIGH. GLARE NORMALLY IS UNACCEPTABLE. LIGHT INTAKE DURING WINTER MONTHS ARE ROUGHLY OVER 400 LUX, AND PENETRATING DEEPER INTO INTERIOR, SO PASSIVE HEATING CAN BE ACHIEVED DURING THOSE MONTHS. HOWEVER IF THE GLARE IS TOO HIGH AT ANY GIVEN TIME, THE USE OF INTERIOR SHADES CAN HELP ADJUST GLARE LEVELS.
