NEW PIN-UP PERSPECTI VES In recent seasons we’ve seen a resurgence of vintage trends, as a new generation interprets rebellious style. Once pushing the envelope in their own decades, trends like Rockabilly and punk inspirations find new footholds as once again they become the focus of a youth-led movement. Bringing the sexy and slimming style of the pin-up era back into the limelight, swimwear brand Bettie Page is paying homage to an icon and a style that’s evocatively feminine in nature. True to the origins of the trend, the brand’s collections focus on classic trademarks of the 1950’s. High-waisted bikinis and halter top one-piece swimsuits take the helm, as simplistic prints such as polka dots and nautical-inspired stripes highlight the female form. Although the traditional pin-up girls may have been of a particular body-type, Bettie Page’s diversity in their swimwear collections appeal to a wide range of women looking for something to wear to the beach. From bandeaus to tankinis, and everything in between, there are options that are functional and fashionable to address many body types. So whether you’re looking to show a little skin, or cover up while still looking sexy, there’s a pin-up inspired outfit that’ll suit your swimwear needs.

THROUGH THE EYE OF ICARIUS It’s not often that we find a fashion brand that compels us above and beyond snatching the last of its kind in a boutique. But when we find a brand that resonates with us to our core, it’s obvious that there is something quite unique behind the pieces we come to covet. Initially all it took was a line-sheet and a silken scarf to catch our attention, as Italian fashion brand Icarius altered our perception of art and fashion in the industry. Melding an abstract aesthetic with high-quality Italian silk accessories, the Milanese brand reveals an ethereality behind the artist and his creations. Brought to life by Brazilian creative director Icarius De Menezes, Icarius’ collaborative “Projects” don’t play by the traditional rules of the industry. Rather focusing on centuriesold silk screening techniques of Milan and imagery that pushes boundaries, the most recent of Icarius’ projects evoke an intriguing enticement as Menezes’ fascination with the human body takes form. Appropriately named for their anatomical origins, the visceral and black eye projects share an elegant contrast that makes them the focal point of any outfit. Whether it’s a silk charmeuse scarf or a mousseline shirt, you’ll be drawing attention as you stroll down the streets. And as they’re hand-formed, hand-spun in the heart of Italy, manufactured exclusively to your order, you’ll find your own uniquity in the pieces and the brand that will win over your heart.

ringing photos to life and conveying emotions through a 2-D film, models are tasked with a difficult responsibility. The photogenic few create beautiful images, however, it’s an even more elite group of individuals that find their niche in high fashion modeling. Speaking a thousand words with a single

glance, these models mold their bodies into an artistic canvas that rivals their marble ancestors. With chiseled bone structures and flawless skin, it’s the gifts of biological advantages that grace these models—but it’s the perseverance and talent that make an individual capable of high fashion modeling. These young models have caught our eye, exemplifying the beauty and talent of our Millennial generation. And with potential to represent any designer worldwide, they go above and beyond embracing the gifts nature has given them. Embracing their genetic flaws and perfections, and creating beautiful images, these models show exactly what our generation has evolved to be.

DARING

DIGITAL In a day and age where technological advancements seem to be escalating at exponential speed, the lines between what was once fantasy and now reality are constantly blurring. Android vs. iPhone may perhaps be the largest feud in the industry now, but with some promising visionaries on the rise, the possibilities of modern mobile devices may barely be scratching the surface.

The oPhone

A SC E NT- S AT I O NA L D E VE L OPME N T

Taking inspiration from a Harvard classroom discussion on virtual worlds, one professor of biomedical engineering is developing a scentsational product of the future—the oPhone. The newest venture into an entirely virtualized world, where global connectivity is as far as your nearest wifi signal, the oPhone is an olfactory experience that will allow users to send oNotes around the world—sendable scents. As part of a project for Professor David Edwards’ class in biological engineering, an allfemale team of young designers developed a

12

DEVICES

concept of virtual aromas. With the capability of being sent via email, tweet or text, the virtual aromas would add an additional sensory component to the current virtual experience. But the concept wasn’t entirely their own. Based in a jest that Google sent out for April Fool’s Day in 2013, Google Nose BETA, this team of engineering designers has taken the task to make jarring reality out of a joke. “I think you’ve all seen this year this really incredible April fool’s joke that Google did, where they sort of suggested that it was possible to send olfactive messages” Edwards said. “We just decided to do it.” In a collaborative effort to make the visionary concept reality, Edwards brought two of the students designers (Amy Yin and Rachel Field) to his creative hub in downtown Paris, Le Laboratoire, to work alongside a team of industry professionals. Working with master perfumer for Givaudin in Paris, Olivier Pescheux, and Ryan Spinoglio of Toby’s Estate in Sydney, Australia, the first concept was to create an experience around the world’s most universally recognized odor— coffee. Working with a premier coffee shop in the hub of Paris, Café Coutume, the team at Le Laboratoire worked to recreate the scents designed by the master baristas. “Imagine you are online and want to know what a particular brand of coffee would smell like, or you are in an actual long line waiting to order” Edwards said. “You just tap on the oNote and get the experience.” But the oPhone has many more potential applications than just convenience of shopping for coffee. The initial four oChips—which render the smell being sent—can be combined into thousands of scents, creating what Edwards refers to as “an evolution of odor”. And utilizing his background in biomedical engineering, Edwards believes that oPhone can have practical applications for the healthcare

system, as well. “We think there could be help for Alzheimer’s patients, related to the decline and loss of memory” Edwards said. Recreating sensory memories that have been lost to the disease, the oPhone will allow patients to relive a world of scents from their pasts in the comfort of their own homes. As with any ingenuity, there are still great strides to be made before the oPhone will reach mass production, however, as was seen with the virtual coffee bar at Le Lab, the technology is already here. Edwards hopes for improvements to be implemented prior to the end-of-the-year Beta release of the oPhone in 2014, and that in the near future the oPhone will be even smaller, more intimate technology.

Phonebloks

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX Frustrated with the inefficiency of modern technology and the consistent increase in waste-streams as a byproduct of the technological revolution, designer Dave Hakkens from the Design Academy Eindhoven decided to take a stand with a modular concept. The project, which he named “Phonebloks”, was a conceptual model that would allow for Hakkens to tackle the largest culprit to waste-streams worldwide—cell phones. The conceptual idea behind Phonebloks is to modularize all components of a cell phone, creating a customizable interface wherein each component can be switched out and replaced. Allowing for constant upgrading, customizability and the replacement of only faulty parts, Hakkens concept addressed the need for innovation in quite a unique way. Wanting to develop “A Phone Worth Keeping”, Hakkens reached out to the universe via social media to find a market for the product he had conceived. To say the results simply surpassed expectations would be an understatement. “The original goal was to find 500 supporters, but we ended up with over 979,372” Hakkens said. In the first 24 hours www.phonebloks.com reached over a million viewers, and the site crashed. But not before mobile phone manufacturers near and far caught wind of Phonebloks. By the time Hakkens got the site back online he had gained a Chief Technical

Officer, Gawin Dapper, and had responses from interested companies big and small. “One company that stood out from the beginning was Google-owned Motorola,” Hakkens said. “They had been working on a modular phone for about a year before Phonebloks launched.” The project, codenamed “Project Ara”, was very similar conceptually making Motorola the perfect fit as their initial partner. “They are recently bought by Google, which puts them in a rather unique position; experience and innovative thinking” Hakkens said. Phonebloks had partnered with Motorola in order to create a community that connects the consumer with the manufacturer—pulling back the veil of the development process and putting production on the fast-track. Speaking from an environmental standpoint, the concept behind Phonebloks of compartmentalizing cell phones, would greatly reduce not only waste, but toxins and heavy-metals that are known to cause nerve damage and even cancer in humans as they accumulate in the ecosystem. It makes a statement for an environmentally-conscious generation, but also appeals to even the most technologically obsessed. But a question of feasibility abounds. There’s clearly a marketplace for such an innovative product, but with the long history of competition between phone manufacturers and large difference in annual net incomes, is it realistic to expect a collaborative effort for the sake of the consumer? Or is it more likely that the capitalism will prevail? We know that we’d trade our phone in for one. Would you?

The Art of Nature M IST UR A TI M EPI ECES By Ryan Wallace In a mechanistic world, filled with evolving subcultures and ever-changing generations, it would appear that there only two constants that we have in our lives—the nature that surrounds us and the even-ticking tempo of time. Both beautiful because of the intricate roles they play for humanity and the mysterious aspects of their unknowns, time and nature supersede the life of an individual. Viewed as separate components, the two are constant reminders of the fleeting moments of life, but in tandem they work to illustrate a broader meaning to existence. Combining the two concepts together with an artistic vision in mind, Colombian accessories brand Mistura pays homage to history’s two largest icons. “We named our watches ‘Mistura’ because it means fusion in Portuguese and our timepieces are a fusion of design—Nature and Art” Mistura CEO & Designer, Daniel Schemel said. “We celebrate our philosophy with our own name because we believe that nature can bring us unique designs through art.” Established in 2005 as a collaborative project amongst three best friends, Mistura’s origins were founded on a unique and original fusion of interests. Combining three distinct areas of expertise—architectural design (Daniel Schemel), fashion (Juan Felipe Barreneche) and engineering (Felipe

Lopez)—the

foundations

of

Mistura

were created with a deep understanding of the timepiece design they intended on altering. “We wanted to create something unique and original—with a fusion of our abilities” Schemel said. “We strongly believe that the market has had

its share of machine-made products, and [now] it is turning towards an appreciation of handcrafted, unique pieces like Mistura Timepieces. We are going back to the basics.” As Colombian nationals, the team decided to take the concept of Mistura and ingrain a bit of their own roots into the final products. But what started as a metaphoric gesture of paying homage, turned to a literal use of land. Sourcing materials from their home in Colombia, the brand has expressed their commitment to Earth in their products and their construction. Blending high-quality materials with innovative modern design & technology, Mistura strikes a unique balance when fusing different elements into their durable timepieces. “Our commitment to Earth is to minimize the use of chemicals and to increase the use of materials that are biodegradable, sustainable and still luxurious” Schemel said. “We look for businesses that have certified their products, making sure that we only are using sustainable woods, leathers and materials in general. But to us commitment to Earth is not only planting trees, it is also to support the arts, medical foundations, children in need, and to create jobs for people in need.” Taking

AN ARTISANAL APPROACH l e s l i e f r a n c e s c a A brand born of an artisanal aesthetic, Leslie Francesca has taken her passion for the simplistic and created a jewelry line that shines all on its own. With a deep understanding of the materials she works with and the technique of an accomplished gemologist, Francesca has proven that beauty can lie in even the most unexpected of overturned stones along each path. A true naturalist, Francesca’s view of jewelry rings quite true in every piece. A simple style, minimalistic in augmentation, the collections of rings, pendants and other accessories that Francesca cuts are reliant on the natural beauty of the gems she works with. “I believe the simpler the better” Francesca says. “I mainly work with stones because they speak for themselves.” Learning some lost techniques as a jeweler in the artisan capital of the world Florence, Italy, Francesca expanded on her knowledge as a gemologist and honed a clear vision for her craft. “I was born in my dad’s Italian phase, so I thought why not move to Italy” Francesca says. “I was surrounded by the most beautiful art and the most beautiful jewelry one could hope for.” Balancing traditional and modern techniques, along with a wide range of carefully curated stones, Leslie Francesca has found a unique niche within the industry. Looking at her collection, you won’t see a princess cut diamond or a faceted sapphire, but rather something much rawer in its appeal. Making use and showcasing the intricate nature of more common gems like amethyst and quartz, Leslie Francesca collection s represent a diverse range of beauty at an affordable price tag. With such a focus placed on the stones, each piece imbues a unique difficulty to the jeweler, but also results in an artistically unique piece for each consumer. “Everything artistic is related, even if it doesn’t show in every design” Francesca says. “I love clean lines and beautiful colors, which I think is shown in my jewelry collections. Druzies play such a significant role in my jewelry because they are naturally so beautiful, and the healing properties of Druzy Quartz are to clear the mind and focus creativity which is really awesome to work with.” Amongst the highlights of the collections are Druzy stone rings and the cascading amethyst earrings & pendants. Contrasting smooth and rough, the collections bring texture to the foreground as crystalline lattices become focal points of the pieces. Also, appealing to the unique nature of each piece, Francesca’s approach to cutting the stones reveals intricate levels of strata that show the conditions of the gems over the course of centuries. “It sounds so hippie, especially considering that I am a Berkeley girl, but mother Earth and nature really inspire my jewelry” Francesca says. “There is really nothing more stunning than nature, and to think that all of these stones come from mother Earth is entirely astounding.” Inspired by the Earth around her and the stones beneath her feet, Francesca’s collections reflect her deep appreciation of gems and the intricate attention she gives to each and every piece. Simplistically chic, while glaringly bold, at an affordable price these pieces are as addicting as they are unique.

FIVE DANCES images make way for the increasing dischord of the partnerwork and the subtext of the film. “I need to give credit to my amazing editor Jarrah Gurrie” Brown says. “We were going to approach the dancers and the dance the way we would approach actors in a dramatic scene.” “During production we moved the dance scenes around a lot, focusing in without giving those standalone shot of a dance in a studio—creating in a sense our own dance. So, many decisions were made while we were shooting the film, really responding to the dancers.” A brilliant film, not only in the genre of dance flicks, but holding weight on its own, “Five Dances” is an empathetic and insightfully raw view into an industry all about appearances. By Ryan Wallace The simplest recipe we’ve found to an extraordinary career involves a keen mixture of talents and passion. By utilizing what you’re good at, and what you know, you can leverage your enthusiasm into a great sales pitch, or even bend the artistic bounds to create something new. Bringing together the skill sets of an industry-experienced merchandiser and the memories of a childhood pastime, one fatherdaughter duo has taken their Saturday yard sale trips to another level. Founding their very own lifestyle blog turned vintage jewelry brand, Sweet & Spark, Jillian and Howard Bremer have a way to breathe new life into American classics. Transitioning from corporate careers in buying to passionate vintage jewelry hunters, they’ve turned memories into a lucrative brand. “After the new brand I was working on closed, I decided to leave and pursue my dream of building a brand by combining my dad’s antiquing hobby with my merchandising background” Jillian says. “I’d grown up going to yard sales and flea markets with him and

was always amazed at how much cool stuff is out there! You never know what you’re going to find, and that’s part of the rush. You have to be prepared to find the score of your life or go home empty-handed.” Adventurous “sparkhunters”, consistently on the road looking for those actual diamonds in the rough, the duo divides their work between East coast and West. With dad in the East and Jillian in the West, their buying experience has been founded on years of trial and error. With an expertise in sourcing those invaluable vintage accessories, and blending two drastically different aesthetics, Sweet & Spark is a literal collection of the best classic American jewelers. “As a curated, vintage jewelry brand our mission is to bridge the gap between the overwhelming world of vintage and modern trends” Jillian says. “With my dad as head buyer scouring the entire East Coast and myself out West, we are both at different markets throughout each week—we couldn’t be on more opposite extremes! But we balance each other out and keep one another humble. When we’re on the road buying, it’s mostly make-up free days, which is so refreshing.”

Not always a fan of the hunt, Jillian reveals that growing up, she used to be embarrassed of the Saturday morning routine yard sales with her dad. But with rise of blogging, a blossoming obsession with accessories and the immersive challenge of the vintage industry, Jillian has found her skill sets lend to her success. “It’s refreshing to switch gears and immerse [myself] into the vintage industry, as it’s highly disconnected from mass consumption and challenges the mind to approach ‘the hunt’ in a much different manner” Jillian says. “Thanks to the rise of blogging, I love that people have more style confidence than ever and are looking for ways to standout from the crowd. I believe there are no ‘fashion rules’, it’s all about wearing a trend with confidence and jewelry is the easiest way to add your own personality to any outfit.” Vibrant pieces that can help define a look or elevate an outfit, jewelry serves an important role in the wardrobes of both men and women alike. But gleaming with one-of-a-kind couture pieces, there is something quite unique about vintage jewelry. Boasting a history that not only dates a piece, but also tells a story, they are opportunities to stand alone and set yourself apart from the crowd. A vice for some, the thrill and adventure of the hunt give statement accessories all that much more of a story. But finding the truly valuable pieces is not a journey for the faint of heart. Making it their life’s work to source the highest quality pieces there are in the market, Sweet & Spark has all of the jewels with none of the hassle of digging through the junk. “Our mission is to do the dirty work for you and provide credibility in the overwhelming world of vintage” Jillian says. “We’ve done a lot of research on the signed costume designers and therefore are able to weed out fakes and anything broken or re-worked. A lot of our finds

are discovered by just getting in the car and stopping along the way, based on what we see.” Blending classic aesthetics with bold designs, they find a new role for the superb pieces in dusty drawers, and one day hope to create their own pieces to add to the collections as well— mirroring all of their favorite components of the vintage pieces they’ve found over the years. “We hope to someday launch a vintageinspired line, but in order to do this we’d want to hold the integrity of the quality that vintage costume jewelry has, and [we] will need to find the right resources to execute this” Jillian says. “There is so much more opportunity in the vintage industry and we haven’t even cracked much of it yet.” Whether your aesthetic is bohemian chic or contemporary casual, you’ll always find an

occasion for those statement-worthy pieces. And giving a little invigoration into an outfit, the pieces you’ll find with vintage jewelry will offer more unique personality, as they’ve stood the tests of time. Offering consistent collections of one-of-a-kind pieces, Sweet & Spark has found a distinct aesthetic through the combination of multiple artists. And in bringing together a large breadth of American designers over the course of five decades, the pieces you’ll find curated by the brand are the dreams of jewelers past. So what advice do the experts have for amateur “sparkhunters” in the making? “We’re learning that bigger and more wellknown does not necessarily equal better. Sometimes the best places to find vintage goods are in small towns” Jillian says. “Vintage

costume jewelry is competitive—in order to scoop it up first you need to be first. If you’re feeling up for the chase, and don’t mind getting out there early and a little dirty, flea markets and yard sales have some of the best treasures for the best price. You never know what you’re going to find, and that’s part of the rush.” “Bringing a small eyeglass loop with you is always a good idea. That way you can see if a piece is signed by the designers name; we tend to focus American Designers from the 40’s-90’s along the names of Monet, Trifari, Napier, Goldette, Lisner, Kramer and Coro. While I believe a little wear to the finish gives a piece character, make sure to stay away from pieces that are broken, missing stones or have any green gunk on them. They are more trouble than they are worth.”

SPIAGGIA DEL SOLE Whether you’re basking in the Pacific or wading near the Tropics, this summer there’s no destination quite the same as the Sardinian shores. C O A S TA L D E N I M When the dry summer heat hits the city, there’s a tangible change in the general streetwear we’re accustomed to see. Too hot for denim of most sorts, people pack away their beloved jeans and search frantically for comparable summer staples. Unfortunately for them, in the denim-driven world we live in, few alternatives can compete. But that’s not to say that all denim is out of the question. Realizing the necessity of welltailored, worn & torn denim shorts that fulfill

our trystfullly brief summer needs, brands with the modern man in mind have altered a once taboo design into a sweet summer essential. Opting for sleek, slim-fitting designs and a bit of contrast in lighter shades of denim, collections from brands like Burton Menswear, Superdry and Primark offer subtle variations on a similar design—focusing highly on detailing for their individual marks on the trend. For a classic, vintage Americana take, brands like leather legend Superdry combine light

denim weathering and classic copper riveting for a familiar feel. But if it’s a contemporary perspective you’d like, for a fresher youthful accent to your summer looks, brands like Burton Menswear are combining light-washes, acid treatments and black & white rivoting for a new take on the trend. Whether your beach-bound or in for a casual stroll around the farmer’s market, these coastal denim shorts will have you cool in the face of any record heat wave.

The fashion of the summer months delineates itself from the other seasons in one singularly important aspect—the lack of layering. Dependent highly on the stunning accessories of the season and the slim-fitting apparel that keeps you beach-ready at a moment’s notice, summer fashion is all about simplicity and sticking to the basics without all the clutter. And what’s better to declutter your daily accessory load than with the simplest of all—a clutch. From casual to elaborately ornate, clutches may be tiny, but pack a powerful punch in terms of appeal. Coming in a whole world of variations, there’s certainly designs out there that’ll be perfect for your daily jaunts around town, the office, or even a late-night date. But if you’re looking to find our favorites for the season, you’ll likely come across two variations equally as

bold, yet entirely different in terms of application. For the casual city-dweller or the contemporary woman, our daily options for clutches revolve around a modern envelope clutch design—functional, yet sleek, these simplistic accessories speak volumes. In variations of leather and suede, dyed for vibrant color contrast, the metallic hardware and compact design have us singing praises of their appealing versatility. In contrast, for those elegant evenings out or the more reserved fashionista, hard geometric clutches & mainaudières offer the bold appeal of jewelry mixed with the functionality of a handbag. From precious metals to mother of pearl, these flashy accessories are everything we adore from the summer months, and we’re certain you’ll want to add at least a few to your own collection as well.

peep toe pumps Although our So-Cal perspective permits the annual allowance of our beloved Rainbow Sandals year-round, when the sun is at its hottest we find ourselves sexiest in peep toes or simple pumps. Wedges, boots and even sandals may find their way into our daily attire, but if it were up to us, we’d trade in our kicks for some heels! In our swimsuits, or even in our summery dresses, we find that the simple addition of a neutral pump can help relieve us of even our deepest insecurities. Elongating the legs, highlighting the length of a woman’s body, and adding just a pop of contrast against the skin tone; pumps are indeed a woman’s best friend. They’re simplistic, daring, and just a tad bit sexy. And our favorite peep toes of the season show off our newly pedicured toes in the only way that seems fit. For the summer months, although we love the vibrancy of tribal prints and fluorescent colors, we’re more inclined to look on the simpler side of things. We don’t need a red sole or a label to make us happy, black & white pumps with accents of gold or snakeskin leather will do just fine. 1. 5. 9.

For us, there’s something quintessentially summeresque in metallic jewelry. Perhaps it’s a connection to the precious metals of bullion, or the imagery of Aztecs adorned in golds and silver, but either way there is something so attractive in the reflective face of true metal jewelry. Although copper and the silvery gleam of platinum are quite popular in the marketplace, it’s quite difficult to beat the classic appeal of golds and silver. With a brilliant luster that shines in the sun, and even oxidation characteristics that add depth to the character of a piece of jewelry, precious metals are at the top of our list for summer essentials. Now, your inner haggler may argue with the price points of real deal metal jewelry, but we assure you the penny pinching is entirely worth the effort. Inexpensive costume jewelry, from brands like Topshop and Forever 21, is a great alternative for many summer outings to the beach or on a hike in the Hollywood Hills. But generic molded pieces not only lack ingenuity and individuality, but also a deeper fundamental use of the ductility and malleability of genuine precious metals. Although individuality comes at a price, the hunt for the perfect pieces simply adds to the story behind your beloved accessories. Scouring through thousands upon thousands of artisanal jewelers, hand-making their designs with classical techniques, you’ll find hundreds of designs that catch your eye—each unique to the designer that molded it. But if you’re not much of a shopper, collections curated by galleries like Sable & Ox offer you the best of the best right at your fingertips, and they’ve done the dirty work for you. From Versace Greek-key arm cuffs to Palenque rings by Carina De Jager, our aesthetic focuses on the earthen qualities of the metals and natural designs inspired by their innate characteristics.

By Ryan Wallace his Spring, when we sought after the top tier of accessories to showcase, we found ourselves lost amongst mountains of pendants and

gems.

Quickly

reminding ourselves of the task at hand, we foraged our way to the

surface and decided on what we deemed was most important in the perfect piece. As with most fashion, the perfect accessory should gleam a distinctly classical European inspiration, augmented through the lens of a contemporary viewpoint, and should embody the most supremely crafted, locally sourced construction in its arena. But for most, expectations and reality are starkly different truths. As we were searching through the proverbial desert

of

inspiration,

we

happened

upon

the

quaintest of accessories that we could think of—a bicycle. But this was not just any bicycle, it was a Mosi, and her name was Carolina. “Her oversized Buck and Wing wicker basket and chrome, wheel-powered headlamp are vintage throwbacks to the rich bicycle culture regions of Holland and Denmark. At the same time, she offers modern technologies such as a Shimano Nexus 7-speed internal hub that allows riders to cycle with ease and tackle even the steepest of hills” President and Designer of Mosi Bicycles, Darren Buck said. “Combining such amenities can produce such a unique and definitive look that appeals to both men and women of all ages.” A beauty of European proportions, her elegantly sleek frame and rich Australian leather accessories brought us back to an earlier era. Imbued with a classically vintage aesthetic, and a simplistic vision derived from a rich cultural past, we found ourselves in complete adoration. Carolina is timeless in her beauty, setting the bar in every way for the musthave accessory of the decade. Bringing a vintage piece, once born of necessity, back into the limelight, San Francisco-based cycling brand Mosi Bicycles has set itself apart with its debut Mode Collection. And by combining a wellresearched aesthetic with custom crafted pieces, Mosi illustrates that concept and construction are inevitably linked halves of a quality product. “During my many travels around the world I quickly realized the best way to truly get to know and appreciate a city is by pedaling off the beaten path” Buck said. “I was inspired to create a bicycle collection that liberates the inherent joy and

Mosi Bicycles is an ode to nostalgia—a time where getting from point A to point B was the best part of your day.” Fitting top-of-the-line gears and gadgets onto the slender frame, Buck has kept true to his elegant vision for the perfect street bicycle. Over the past three years, as he searched for the perfect embellishments and custom designs, Buck has taken the chic concept of combining fashion and function into new territories. “Mosi Bicycles is proof that classicism and modernism can be happily paired into one beautifully crafted product” Buck said. “A fresh take on a classic, Mosi has old-world charm combined with modern technologies, making Mosi the best of both worlds.” Slowing things down and taking a look at the more leisurely aspects of life, Mosi Bicycles offer something much more than a simple cruiser—they offer a lifestyle created only in dreams. In its design, it is sentimental—bringing back nostalgic memories of a long-forgotten past. In its construction, it is immaculate—composed of the highest quality fabrication and impeccably detail-oriented. But most importantly is that it is boldly, and unequivocally fashionable down to a tee. “Mosi Bicycles is an extension of your own personal style” Buck said. “It is that statement accessory that can elevate any outfit to perfection while simultaneously turning heads as you go about your day.” “As timeless as a man in a tuxedo or a string of pearls, these bicycles, effortlessly add glamour and class to your already unique look.

And as a

bonus, our bicycles provide a functional, well-made and practical ride through the city or down the boardwalk.” Conscientious of the fashion-forward agenda of the industry, and the need for a simpler way of life, Mosi has spun a vision into a green movement where dream items become reality and the global footprint we leave behind is better, based on the accessories we choose. And by flawlessly executing a classicallyinspired design, the brand looks forward to the long future ahead—as Carolina, Hugo, Marc and Stella will stand the tests of time.

“People

it’s

quick,” Meddock said. “Sometimes people eat sandwiches just because it’s something to eat.” We can all relate. Determined to change that, Meddock, a tall surfer and “chief shaka giver,” with neck-length hair and a tattoo covering his left calf, worked with a few local chefs to create eight distinct sandwiches—each with its own unique taste. Sessions Sandwiches officially opened its doors in April and is the perfect place to grab a bite this summer. Located on Newport’s Balboa Peninsula, Sessions is walking distance from the beach and from bars such as Malarky’s, Woody’s and Baja Sharkeez. From the outside, Sessions, minimalistic in design, looks like a giant wooden box protruding out from the rest of the strip mall in which it occupies the corner space. Inside,

Yet the most popular sandwich is the Meddock Melee, named after the man himself. On a toasted

dark brown squaw roll covered in oats, the sandwich features roasted turkey, guacamole, onion, pepper, mini sprouts, and an adobobuttermilk dressing and has the full package: the chewiness of the turkey, the crunchiness of the sprouts, the creaminess of the guac and the zesty aftertaste of a slice of jalapeño jack. Each sandwich is served with two slices of pickle on a pie plate and melts in your mouth. Though

creations, which also include ham, meatball, pulled pork and pastrami sandwiches, are the highlight of Sessions and what most people know the joint for, the menu also includes a small variety of hot dogs and salads, as well as, sides such as potato salad and chips & guacamole. For drinks, a series of iced teas are available. Sessions is, overall, a taste of classic Southern California—what surfers eat, what they listen to, and where they spend their time when they are out of the water. In the afternoon, Sessions is packed with surfers and skaters, long hair, long boards, sunglasses and all. The website even features a daily surf condition report, courtesy of Surfline. Yet Sessions is certainly not just for local surfers; any OC resident can appreciate the delicious taste of one of Meddock’s carefully structured creations. They may come at a higher price tag than most of your average sandwich joints, with the cheapest sandwich being priced at $8.00 on its own, but Sessions’ sandwiches are loaded with original flavor and are certainly worth checking out next time you’re on the peninsula. And even without the sides, one sandwich is still enough to fill you up. They’re also working on getting a liquor license. Gnarly.
