High Level Bespoke Corporate Signage for HSBC European Headquarters at Canary Wharf, London. Tara Signs recently completed one of its most daring and challenging projects to date. Having beaten off fierce competition that involved bids from many major worldwide sign manufacturers, Tara Signs has designed, manufactured and assisted in the installation of the impressive HSBC lettering and logo on top of the 5th tallest building in London, and 34th tallest building in Europe. Harrogate Borough Council appoints Farrell and Clark

ALPHA RAIL CELEBRATES 30th ANNIVERSARY

Architects Farrell and Clark LLP have been appointed by Harrogate Borough Council to develop proposals for new civic accommodation on its Knapping Mount site. The new Civic building could rationalise five of the councils existing offices onto a single site.

On 3 April 2015, metal railings, gates and pedestrian guardrail manufacturer, Alpha Rail, will raise a toast to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

A final decision on whether to go ahead with the proposal will be considered by the council in summer 2015.

SHH remodels Terrace Restaurant

at London Zoo

Architects and designers SHH have transformed ZSL London Zoo’s main restaurant (The Terrace Restaurant), by remodelling and extending the 1920s building as part of a three-year, £4.6m project. The restaurant’s capacity has nearly tripled as a result, from 240 to 700 covers (making it one of the UK’s largest day-visitor restaurants), whilst the building’s footprint has also increased by almost 1,000 sq m, to include two expansive terraces and a hugely-increased mezzanine floor area. “SHH are honoured to join the long list of illustrious architects who have worked with ZSL London Zoo on the creation of new buildings and enclosures over its 187-year history”, commented SHH Creative Director Neil Hogan. “For our practice, this is an important public building project for us and a strong addition to our portfolio, which has tended historically to feature new-build work in the residential sector, whilst our work in the hospitality sector has been mainly focused on restaurant interiors, on projects such as Café Liberty, the Coach House at Hatfield House and our multi-award- winning Barbican Foodhall and Lounge projects.”

Background: “The existing restaurant at the zoo was updated in order to meet the growing needs of Zoo visitors”, commented SHH Associate Director and Project Leader Brendan Heath. “As visitor demands increased at the London attraction, the restaurant became in need of increased food storage space and modernised equipment. The new design had to ensure that the restaurant worked as a venue space for special events at the Zoo and also maintained the architectural quality of the original John James Joass building. Above all, our aim was to create a highly-functional and high impact space, which would add real quality to the visitor experience and be able to cope with the huge volume of people coming through the zoo - up to 10,000 per day.”

The project began with a feasibility study, commissioned by ZSL (the Zoological Society of London), looking at catering across the whole site, which also includes various kiosks and a retail and café area within the ‘Animal Adventure Café’. The study, carried out in conjunction with catering consultants Boyd-Thorpe Associates and cost consultants WT Partnership, summarised that the best way forward was to make a major investment in main Regent Building restaurant building, so that it could become a true flagship for the Zoo’s hospitality offer.

The Existing Building:

changing area; offices and support space, along with public toilets for the first floor hospitality/ private hire space, the Prince Albert Suite (the interior of which was to remain outside of the brief for the new building). Whilst a 1960s, single storey, timber frame extension at the front (extending just beyond the wings of the original red-brick building) had allowed for increased visitor numbers, it was no longer adequate to cope with the current levels of demand. “The original building was relatively simple,” commented Brendan Heath. “Its most significant feature was a series of double-height arched windows, which had been covered over in the course of the 1960s extension work, with the addition of a flat roof structure leaving them half-inside and half- outside the building.”

When SHH were appointed to the project, they began by assessing the original building, made up of ground, mezzanine and first floor spaces. The 1,196 sq m ground floor offered assisted restaurant service for visitors and a staff canteen area. The 445 sq m mezzanine floor was comprised of a staff

The New Scheme: SHH began by demolishing the 1960s extension back to its foundations and creating a brand new tiered extension to the front of the building, increasing the ground floor area with a new 6m-high, double-height space at the front and creating new stairs up to an expanded mezzanine level, a well as a generous new mezzanine terrace deck and a smaller first floor terrace directly above. SHH also built a small extension to the rear of the building to create new storage space for food.

After ripping out a series of suspended ceilings on the ground floor, SHH took the building back to its original structure and revealed three of the original five arched windows, which now link the new extension to the original ground floor space as a dynamic connecting feature, visible from the building’s exterior.

The overall feel of the newly-remodelled building is clean, raw and urban in glass, timber, exposed brick and steelwork columns, with a striking ribbed deck ceiling in the double-height extension. The huge amount of M&E required for the building for air handling, cooling and heating is mainly located in the building’s rear service yard, with a further two air-handling units set within two long, thin plant rooms alongside the building’s wings at mezzanine and first floor levels, clad in Parklex with hidden flush doors. Visually, the plant rooms seem to puncture the floor (although structurally they do not), but they extend a clear visual line up through the two levels. Externally, soldier course block paving announces the new building and separates it off from the herringbone paving of the external square (Barclay Court). Outside seating and tables are part- canopied by the building’s

overhang (in quartz-coloured Parklex) for maximum solar shading. Southfacing, full-height curtain wall glazing to the front of the extension is punctured by six 2.5m-tall doors. At the top of the doors, a feature grille in anodised, matt aluminium in silvery grey takes the eye away from the plasterboard of the ceiling above. The grille is also featured along the edge of the mezzanine floor plate as a means of minimising its visual bulk. At the centre of the glass front to the extension sits a double-sided kiosk with a barista coffee bar and bakery product offer, open throughout the day and a little before the main restaurant opens. The kiosk is also clad in Parklex and folds upwards on opening to create a canopy (specially-created for the project by a company that usually makes doors for aircraft hangars). When closed, it looks to disappear into the building.

“Because of a slight fall away between the front of the existing building and Barclay Court”, Brendan Heath commented, “we wanted to avoid a step

upwards or any other barrier to entry and so created the necessary eveningout within the extension itself, with several steps up to the food servery area, together with two ramps for wheelchair and buggy access. Clear means of access and circulation, which the old building lacked, were key in determining the building’s design.” Steel-framed, cantilevered stairs with glass balustrades for an open feel lead up from both sides of the ground floor to the extensive mezzanine seating area and the terrace beyond, but barely impinge on the stunning, spacious and transparent feel of the building’s interior. The interior of the front extension features a variety of loose and fixed tables and seating, from oak tables with bar-stool height chairs in vibrant orange to white smaller tables with black and white seating, plus curved ‘S’ shape modular seating, offering ease of access and informal arrangement for families with small children or pushchairs. A

smaller area to the left of the ground floor, within the wing section, can be segregated off as needed for meetings or private events, via large sliding partition screens. Flooring is a Solus Ceramic grey ceramic floor tile at ground level with Forbo linoleum for the mezzanine. In every direction, visual interest is piqued by different building levels, with drama added by the exposed brickwork arches, exposed steelwork columns, huge-scale Artemide light fittings (hung in two rows over the double-height spaces); the huge-scale 35 sq m rooflight, which extends across the whole width of the extension, directly in front of the brick arched original frontage and the stunning ribbed metal-deck ceiling in the extension area, with Troldtekt fibrous timber ceiling tiles, particularly effective for sound absorption, have been for the ceiling areas beneath the mezzanine floor.

Catering in the kiosk and in overall restaurant is operated by Ampersand and features a range of fresh foods, ranging from a dedicated clay pizza oven to hot and cold dishes, all located in a very spacious and roomy layout to the rear of the ground floor. All service stations for the food servery area were created by Design Front, who also created the logo and signage for The Terrace Restaurant at the front of the building. A newly-refurbished kitchen to the building’s rear has been designed to accommodate the large increase in capacity and includes new canopies, state-of-the-art cooking equipment and two new goods lifts to service all the floors. A new dry food store has also been incorporated into the newly extended rear of the building, along with an office facility for the Zoo’s staff.

On the mezzanine level, the huge (245 sq m) external terrace features grey ceramic floor tiles in 600 x 600 mm squares from The Deck Tile Company, with a rough finish for safety. A balustrade at the front offers views down onto Barclay Court and into the new penguin enclosure, whilst external deckmounted lighting washes over the terrace when the lights are low or when the building hosts evening events. “The internal mezzanine seating area had to fit into quite a tight floor to ceiling height” explained Brendan Heath. “We therefore had to minimise

any services that would normally sit within the ceiling space by creating a false wall to the rear of the mezzanine. This only protrudes by 0.5m and is barely perceptible, but this was a better decision than lowering the ceilings further in the only part of the scheme that wasn’t exceptionally spacious.” On the first floor, the remodelling encompassed a goods lift; further Parklex-clad plant rooms (which act partly as balustrades for the new first floor terrace). The first floor terrace, belonging to the hire- out Prince Albert suite, is set back and offers 215 sq m of

space, with a glass balustrade protecting the skylight at its rear edge. Furniture here is in wood and is slightly more traditional than on the balcony below, to marry with the existing Prince Albert Suite look and feel. The new terrace has a composite floor structure, made from a corrugated steel metal tray filled with concrete, which was then sprayed with tanking system insulation and a damp-proof membrane before being tiled in the same ceramic floor tile as the mezzanine terrace below. www.shh.co.uk

How do you make 1920 architecture effective for modern London life?

One factor is at a premium for plots in London; usable space. When the owners of this 1920s detached house in Twickenham took it over, they had a clear brief, to renovate the property into a modern family home. Architects at Granit had the luxury of rethinking and modernising a plot which was no longer fit for purpose. A home which needed space for family life, guests, as well as improved flow, all within permitted development rights. The brief focused on integrating family space on the ground floor, with a kitchen, dining, lounge and play area leading into the garden, whilst keeping a separate lounge. This additional living area was created by utilising garden space to create a contemporary glazed extension, unifying the newly refurbished home and the modernisation of the garden.

Sustaining aesthetic harmony between new and existing and modernising for family life, all within the project's ÂŁ200,000 initial budget. The garden was sculpted in a way to create a useable, cohesive space to the home, featuring cedar and render, whilst also causing the owners very little maintenance. Canter-levered timber brie-soleil and raised planters were designed to lead the eye, and sustain flow up to the newly built summer house; the replacement for a dilapidated garage which had stood along the gardenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s width for many years. Great care was taken to mirror the existing house and extension in material, form and scale, in addition to factors such as solar gain from the south facing garden and creating a flexible space which can be used throughout the year.

Attention was paid to reconfigure the propertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upstairs, not only to modernise the layout and increase space, but also to sustain flow relative to the new extension and garden. The master bedroom was adapted to provide a greater useable area, in addition to a new walk in wardrobe and ensuite bathrooms.

Above the first floor, the loft had already been extended as part of a previous development. This helped to direct many decisions throughout the project, including using permitted development rights rather than seek planning permission, as it allowed a focus on better use of space, rather than just more. Between adaptations to the existing house, the extension and summer house, 22 sqm was gained, a sizable increase, in addition to 210 sqm of the original 1920s abode and the newer loft extension. Considerations were made to insure the permitted development rights were abided by. The idea of a pitched roof was rejected; although more space would have been created, it would have compromised the aesthetic value of the house from the rear garden. Similar vertical considerations took place for the summer house, opting to recess the building and reduce itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s height, to place more comfortably within the garden and avoid unbalance with the main home.

In many ways a planning application is a more subjective measure and creates greater opportunity for designs to be rejected. In certain situations building work can commence under permitted development rights, whilst the plans have been rejected for planning approval, due to failing to comply with specific authority policies. This is unlikely to be the case for larger, grander builds or properties which are in a listed area. (It is almost always best to contact a local planning authority or a planning

The concept of ground level is fundamental to this house, because the first floor is flush with the ground, creating a strong indoor/outdoor dynamic. Large sliding doors allow the interior and exterior to intermingle, as does a continuous floor covering. Cedar ceilings give the interior an outdoorsy feel. The palette of exterior materials is simple and neutral: local clay brick and cedar. Transparency again plays a role in the exterior design, particularly with the glass barrier around the pool. On the second floor, the master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom with transparent partitions and a large covered deck resembling an aerie facing the woods and the water below.

Pei Cobb Freed & Partners has unveiled its design for a glass-clad tower that will be the largest corporate headquarters in downtown Sacramento. A project of Vanir Development Company, the 26-story building is set to rise on a prime J Street site within walking distance of the new Sacramento sports arena. With its dynamic form and bold skyline presence, the new tower is emblematic of the rebirth of the city’s business district and a major step in the area’s commercial growth. The architects intend an important civic role for the project as well. “For us it was essential that this building not only meet our client’s needs but also make a meaningful contribution to the public realm,” says design partner Michael W. Bischoff. “It does this with an exciting shape that can be enjoyed from afar and a presence at street level that is inviting and responsive to the evolving neighborhood.” The north and south faces of the building, clad in transparent low-E glass, are inflected to create sloping

parallelograms, responding to the opposing flows of traffic on J and I streets and giving the building its distinctive profile. The contrasting slopes are reconciled by means of a simple fold that divides the structure’s narrower east and west facades into two triangular faces, creating a subtle play of light and shadow. The podium base, set back to align with the historic bank building on the east, projects beyond the tower on the north and west to define a generous entry plaza at the corner of 6th and J streets. Accommodating two restaurants and a café, the ground floor is envisioned as a lively neighborhood destination. The tower contains 367,000 square feet of office space, plus 432 parking spaces on 6 levels above grade and one level below. Reynaers helps open up prestige living to stunning views of the capital Occupying one of the most prestigious locations in London, One Tower Bridge development by The Berkeley Group, in conjunction with the London Borough of Southwark, consists of nine blocks many of which are nearing completion and utilise Reynaers aluminium systems. On balconies, large CP 130-LS, lift and slide elements along with CP 155-LS, advanced quality sliding doors are installed, providing high insulation and ease of operation to maximise the stunning views available. “Fundamental to the success of this project was the close collaboration between Total Façade Solutions, Squire & Partners and Reynaers Aluminium to provide the design team with the solutions that were being demanded by the client, where other systems houses had failed,” explained Andrew Jones, lead consultant with Total Façade Solutions.

To achieve the conceptual look, feel and quality envisaged by the architects Reynaers supplied multiple design solutions across all of the architectural aluminium systems for consideration and approval. Nowhere were these demands as high as in the acoustic and aesthetic requirements where the collaboration of all parties and extensive development work by Reynaers, proved pivotal in the successful delivery of the project.

ATRIUM Groupe Dynamite Groupe Dynamite is a womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothing retailer operating 315 stores worldwide under two brands, Dynamite and Garage. Located in Town of Mount Royal's industrial sector, the head office occupies two large industrial buildings with more than 500 employees. Within their walls, the group creates, designs, markets and distributes a constantly evolving collection to a large network of retail stores.

The atrium features a glue-laminated timber structure that echoes the industrial aesthetics of the existing buildings. The inner courtyardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s landscaping conceals views of the atrium from the street. The landscaping concept is then carried inside the space with green walls installed along the existing brick demising walls. At the back, a steel and glass staircase leads to a terrace located above the multifunctional conference centre. The creative lounge and bistro area feature movable furniture to allow Dynamite to host events. Custom tables were designed so that they could be grouped together to create platforms or catwalks for fashion shows.

The objective was to establish a permanent link between the two buildings and create a bright, open, flexible and dynamic space for staff to meet, collaborate, learn and eat. Located at the heart of the GDI Campus, the atrium reflects the company's culture and creative character and acts as the new hub that links all the company's departments. The concept involved repurposing the inner courtyard that separated the two buildings and inserting a large atrium space to house a 2,000 sq. ft. creative lounge, a 6,000 sq. ft. cafeteria with a food service counter and a 1,800 sq. ft. multifunctional space for conferences and training.

York Student Accommodation Deal for Maple Grove Developments

Maple Grove Developments and property development company, Yorvale, have sold a site in the centre of York to McLaren Property, the real estate development and investment division of the McLaren Construction Group. Located on York’s Hallfield Road, the site has planning consent for a 326 unit student accommodation scheme, which will be delivered by Maple Grove’s sister company, Eric Wright Construction. The scheme will comprise two blocks, each with four storeys, providing high quality en-suite accommodation. Eric Wright Construction will start on site in March for an 18-month programme, due to complete in time for the 2016/17 academic year student intake. The Barrancas House The Barrancas House is the result of the restoration of a house built in the seventies in Mexico City, which didnÂ´t have any attract at first but had great spatial potential. It became a challenge for our office to create a home focusing on incredible attention to detail, modernity and discovery of the different spaces and levels to generate expectation and surprise.

The landscape was designed with plants that adjust to the local clima, with green roof and green walls, it also has a solar energy system and a automatized water saving system. The materials used include marble, stone, wood, together with neutral tones as dark green or chocolate that give an earthy feeling that will integrate the interior with the exterior and create the sensation of unlimited space.

We took advantage of the location of the house that has views towards the woods so we installed floor to ceiling windows so that natural elements from the exterior such as natural light, views to the woods become part of the interior without compromising the comfort and intimacy of the inhabitants. The amenities for the family to enjoy inside the privacy of their home include a home theater, a wine cellar, a gym, 2 terraces, a pool, garden and green areas. Discovering the house through the hallways, leads to multifunctional impredictible spaces achieved through movable screen walls , hidden doors, bay windows that open entirely, furniture designed especially for each space, automatic lightening system, for each need of the inhabitants.

The Sita Siphonic Roof Drainage System â&#x20AC;&#x153;made in Germanyâ&#x20AC;? installed in England, draining English rainfall

The huge construction of the Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd. (CCE) plant in Wakefield covers an area equal to 33 football fields, and is the largest and the most environmentally friendly fully-automatic bottling factory in Europe, it is a plant of superlatives. 6,000 cans of soft drinks and 3,200 PET bottles a minute can be produced here. The plant recently became accredited to the Energy-Management Standard ISO 50001 – the first of its kind in the world. Since 2009 the plant has been operating in line with the “Zero Waste to Landfill Principle” by either recycling waste or incineration. The complex was extended in 2013 with a new high-bay warehouse in order to optimise the storage capacity and logistic capability as well as to minimise transportation. The possibility to deliver directly to the customers will save in the future an average of approx. 500,000 miles ( 804,672 km) of road travel per year, in addition to saving the environment a lot of CO2 pollution.

No space wasted In order to get the utmost out of the new warehouse capacity, the Architects decided to exploit the advantages of a Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system for the 6000 square metre flat roof. This would incorporate space-saving ceiling-mounted horizontal piping set almost parallel to the roof, allowing the maximum height of storage space for the racking. Frank Birwe, a technical design specialist at Sita Bauelemente GmbH, explains further: “In this way, racking space is not wasted. Another advantage is that fewer downpipes are necessary, and correspondingly, less pipework protection is required, which increases the useable floor area of the warehouse and with fewer downpipes, less underground piping is required and considerable savings in cost and effort are “achieved”

Working in free air High-bay warehouses have a special construction feature. The building shell and roof are erected around the already standing racking construction. This poses particular challenges for the installation of the flat roof drainage. Suspended scaffolding, (attached to the track rails of the store-and-retrieve vehicle), could only be utilised in the aisles. The remaining work high above the floor was carried out by experienced industrial siphonic rainwater system installers from the specialist firm V-TECH Lochmann & Semmelmann GbR based in Dortmund. The project leader Thomas Glunz, who accompanied the installation work, said “The Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd. high-bay warehouse was a very tall building site. The technicians had to work, secured with harnesses connected to running safety ropes. It was an advantage for them that the pipes were made of polyethylene, and consequently were relatively light to handle, even in 5 metre lengths. Also, the high degree of prefabrication of the mounting system was appreciated by the team under these challenging conditions”. Mr. Cengiz Karadeniz, who is a key-account manager at Sita, commented: “The SitaDSS mounting system has been so designed that the complete fitting of the drainage pipes can be concluded with the minimum use of fixing tools. In a highbay warehouse, the technicians are dependent on managing with fewer tools. The workplace is 35 meters above ground and only a limited amount of space is available for tools and equipment”.

On the right tracks The SitaDSS rapid assembly technology for PE pipes proved itself on site in Wakefield as a dependable support for the installation team. Thanks to the SitaRail mounting rails with the prefabricated clamp pipe brackets, the 300 metres for the main drainage and 340 metres for the emergency drainage were fitted relatively quickly. Now 640 metres of PE pipeline and 32 Sita DSSProfi rainwater outlets are connected together to provide a high-performance siphonic rainwater drainage system which can hold its own against the infamous English rainfall. Because siphonic drainage systems function especially effectively with fully-filled pipes, it is sufficient

to employ pipes and formed parts with relatively small diameters – a fact which serves not only the static structure of the building, but also reduces the construction cost. Siphonic drainage systems are power plants which project water under pressure through pipelines. The mounting of those pipelines must therefore be given a significance which cannot be underestimated. The SitaDSS mounting system, which is typified by pipeline with rail guides and fixed-point fittings on pipes and building parts, holds the ceilingmounted pipes of the siphonic rainwater drainage system securely at a defined distance from the roof construction. The provision of fixed points which fasten the pipeline at intervals of 5 metres as well as all branches to the rainwater outlets, ensure secure anchoring. Expansion of pipe length, through thermal effects, or sagging of the pipes, is prevented. The so-called “rocking” associated with siphonic systems working with high pressure is avoided by transferring unwanted movements safely into the anchor points.

Rainy, but not intensively rainy In preparation for the project, the Sita calculation specialists who were to design, with the help of CAD programmes the layout plan of the main and emergency drainage became active. With a calculated rainfall r(5,5) of 320 l/s x ha and a century rainfall r(5/100) of 640 l/s x ha, the location Wakefield in Yorkshire counted as a “rainy” but not “intensively rainy” area. For the main drainage, 16 SitaDSS Profi DN 75 siphonic rainwater outlets with an extension element to accommodate the thickness of the thermal insulation were selected. They feed 183 litres of water every second into the underground drains. Because the warehouse is surrounded on three sides, the emergency drainage could not be designed with simple parapet spouts. Therefore the emergency rainwater drainage includes 16 further Sita rainwater outlets of the same type which are however equipped with additional accumulation elements for their special task. As soon as the water level, due to extreme rainfall on the roof rises above a defined accumulation height, they dispose the difference between the main rainwater drainage and the emergency rainwater drainage through a special emergency pipeline, which drains freely to an outside area of ground that may be flooded without concern. (It is regulated that emergency drainage systems must be separate from regular drainage systems and that the outflow may not be fed into regular drains). Every second, the emergency system can swallow up 183 litres of water, resulting in the roof being relieved of additional extra weight. The particular positioning of the new warehouse directly onto the existing building complex made it necessary to find a unique solution to piping the emergency rainwater away. Sita technical specialist Frank Birwe summarised: “Because no free run-off at the lowest-point axis was possible, the emergency drainage pipeline had to be led partially through the forward zone of the high-bay warehouse, this however posed no problem thanks to the horizontal positioning of the pipes in the Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system.“

Conclusion: a “watertight” system The project in Wakefield was not only about delivering a perfectly functioning rainwater drainage system, but was also about establishing just-in-time international project logistics. The one-stop-one-shop concept of Sita proved to be convincing. From the CAD calculations for the effective Sita siphonic rainwater drainage system, to the Sita siphonic rainwater outlets, the piping, the fittings and everything was “made in Germany – made by Sita Bauelemente GmbH“, at Sita`s plant location in Rheda-Wiedenbrueck. One of their DSS Siphonic rainwater drainage systems is now taking care of the safe rainwater drainage of the English rain.

Leaks in new basements are caused by poor workmanship and poor workmanship often starts in the design office. The more levels of defence against water ingress, the more each specialist team of installers can rely on another specialist team and cut corners themselves. Result? Leaks. Why? Because the designer did not require anyone to do their work properly. The UK's Concrete Society set up a working party of 18 specialists, main contractors, academics and so on. They found that membranes had a limited life and that the simplest way to build a waterproof basement was with properly waterproof concrete and good workmanship, which most likely requires supervision.

Yet a building control officer was recently overheard saying that, when he worked for a water authority, it took months to stop all the leaks in brand new reinforced concrete water tanks â&#x20AC;&#x201C; because the workmanship was always terrible.

The problem in the UK is that poor workmanship is more competitive than better workmanship and that is the fault of the design team*. It is all very well saying that as well as clay filled carpet or sticky back membrane that internal drainage, a sump, a pump, a backup pump, backup power and an alarm system will deal with leaks (often only after further repair), the client has lost a lot of money and valuable real estate and hundreds of people employed to do a good job have run away, paid well for a bad job. *It is not the fault of the main contractor to choose a better sub contractor because it is in main contractors' interests to have more materials and work specified rather than less. Japanese companies build the most reliable cars (Which? 2014). They also invented the world's most reliable concrete waterproofer. It is largely made in China now, so most of the world's water resistant concrete is actually completely waterproof which may be why China builds so much below ground, for instance the world's two largest underground railways.

Yet we don't use this marvellous chemical in the UK. We never test concrete for water resistance. We pay outrageous prices for some soap, bitumen, polymer or a bit more cement in a pail or bag because each was once proven to make a tiny improvement to the water resistance of concrete, all falling far short of waterproof. That means we buy products with a BBA certificate issued after a lab test rather than site-used concrete tested to BS EN 12390-8-2009, which is now the standard test for water permeability of concrete. What we propose is that fully waterproof concrete, proven on each project to BS EN 12390-8-2009 is used for all underground structures and that at the tender stage the sub contractor knows that he will receive only fully waterproof concrete, and that what he does to or with the concrete to create leaks is down to him to repair. If he wants tapes in the joints he can pay for them. If he wants others to put on membranes he can pay for them. If the basement needs internal drainage later he must pay for it.

Are basement leaks your fault? Probably.

If sub contractors know they must repair all the leaks, then those who stop causing leaks will become more competitive saving many thousands of pounds and months of work later. Is this far-fetched? No. It happens with increasing regularity already in the UK. But only when the conditions were made clear before agreements were made. Is it costing more? No, it is costing far less. It might add a week to a month-long contract but when these basements are finished they are finished. Unlike most that are not waterproof till months later. This basement in the Cotswolds was built by a team experienced at building basements for English Heritage (who insist on quality rather than speed). That is why there is nothing in any joint (except scabbled and cleaned concrete) and the structure is waterproof from the concrete alone.

The client, a self-builder (and I.T. geek), project managed this basement for what most would believe is an impossibly low sum. All specifiers should read the UK Concrete Society's report “The influence of integral water-resisting admixtures on the durability of concrete”.

So why do specifiers believe that BBA certificated products add any value? It would seem to be because they believe the guarantees and the longer the guarantee the better. Caltite have one of the longest guarantees, so how does that work if they know full well that they did nothing to increase water-resistance selling their product? But most leaks are repaired at extra cost. Who pays, we ask, if the sub contractor is long gone? Secondly they specify a concrete mix equal to* the old C35A before BS 8007

was withdrawn (*equal in terms of total liquids to OPC). So they can quote from that BS that concrete properly delivered, placed and compacted will not visibly leak. Cementaid (UK) Ltd expressly does not guarantee leaks through cracks, voids, dirt etc., which are the causes of visible leaks through concrete. However the Japanese chemical now made in Beijing makes a cement rich mix workable with much less water than any BBA certificated product. So whilst this very powerful waterreducer disappears when the concrete begins to set, the effect is that the very much denser concrete has no capillary network. Nothing can get through. That is why we call JK-04 PL 'Triple Proof' in the UK. It Triple Proofs concrete against water, vapour and gas. And we get proof at every project that absolutely, completely waterproof concrete was delivered. So clearly if there were ever any leaks it would be the fault of workmanship, either of design or on site, and only the culprit would pay not the client.

They quote published evidence, by a past director of the suppliers of Caltite, that Caltite simply does not work underground where it cannot be dried.

FROM THE ARCHITECT Following Bulgaria’s recent accession to the European Union, Phase I of the National Museum Complex in Sofia, comes at a time when Bulgarian society is undergoing a reevaluation of cultural values and is in great need of a new selfassured and positive identity. The museum complex in the capital’s historic center is funded by the European Fund for Regional Redevelopment and will showcase the country’s two most important art collections – those of the National Art Gallery and the National Gallery for Foreign Art.

SITE HISTORY Located on Alexander Nevsky Square, the museum complex occupies a site of extraordinary history. Over the past century the cathedral square and the surrounding buildings have seen a number of transformations that have had a profound effect on the way the site relates to the city. In the late 19th century the three story building of the Royal Printing House framed the square to the east. Severely damaged at the end of WWII, the printing house was adapted first for the needs of the Technical University and later for the needs of the National Gallery for Foreign Art. The addition of the new wings of the Technical University in the 50’s and the subsequent adaptation of the Royal Printing House as the National Gallery for Foreign Art in the 80’s enclosed the site as a complete urban block.

By the mid 90’s reorganization of state institutions after communism’s collapse and the ensuing ownership uncertainty left the Technical University building and its interior courtyard as a decaying empty shell.

MUSEUM DESIGN In 2010 the final transformation of the urban block began with an international architectural competition organized by the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture to turn the site into a national museum of visual arts that brings together under one roof several centuries of Bulgarian, European, Asian and African art. The winning competition entry by Yanko Apostolov and Museoplan drew on the site’s unique history and the potential of the existing courtyard to become a symbolic heart of the museum and a meeting place for the citizens and visitors of Sofia. The once-lost inner court is now elevated to connect to the surrounding streets creating a new cultural public space – an open air sculpture garden that can be used for art installations and special public events.

Clad in the much used in the city Vratza limestone, the new building tissue completes the massing of the complex while maintaining the volumetric hierarchy established by the nearby Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the roofline of the National Gallery for Foreign Art. Centered on important lines of sight, the renovated courtyard acts as an orientation device and a point of departure for the museum visitors.

A full spectrum of museum programs are organized around the open courtyard achieving optimum functional integration of art galleries, public spaces, administration offices, art storage and restoration labs. The new elevated ground plane acts as a horizon separating the public spaces and art galleries above from art storage and service spaces below. Largely a project of adaptive building reuse, the National Museum Complex greatly reduces embodied energy through optimum site utilization, recycling and use of local materials. Ventilated facades and use of new materials produce a high-performance building envelope. Exterior shading and dynamic lighting control provide optimum viewing environment in the galleries, while minimizing energy consumption. Air supplied through a raised floor system maintains stable microclimate throughout the museum, while mixed-mode ventilation in the administration offices further optimizes energy use and improves comfort. Green roofs and drought resistant landscaping reduce the heat island effect as well as minimize water usage. The National Museum Complex contributes a valuable cultural venue to Sofia’s downtown. The project recovers a lost space in the public realm and charges it with new meaning – a place where art can start bringing new ideas into the daily lives of the citizens and visitors of Sofia. Phase I and eventually Phase II (scheduled for construction in 2015) are two critical steps in a wider master plan to create a museum cluster that promotes synergy between the national collections and the historical city fabric.

Hope Construction Materials, the UK’s largest independent supplier of construction materials, has completed the supply of 12,500m3 of concrete for the build of more than 300 new military homes. The project, which launched in August, saw 346 new homes built, with Hope providing the concrete slab flooring for each home, using their HOPEFlow high-performance, self-compacting concretes, to ensure that the build was completed to a stringent timescale. Around 1,000 troops from the 16 Signal Regiment and 1 Armoured Division Signal Regiment will be housed on the Beaconside site, as part of the £51m ‘super garrison’ development funded by the Ministry of Defence. The timber frame housing build, the largest of its kind in Britain, is being fulfilled by social housing specialists Lovell.

Typically a build of this size would take between three and four years, however to be able to accommodate troops returning from Germany, it needs to be completed in just 11 months.

REMMERS INDUSTRIAL FLOORING SYSTEM EARNS IT’S STRIPES Remmers Industrial Flooring Systems have been used extensively as part of an expansion project to double the size of the manufacturing area at the Promat BD warehouse. Du Tour Residence Reimagining a 1950s bungalow Our challenge was to transform a family home built in the Fifties into a contemporary residence. The same family has owned the property for decades. Naturally, the house is steeped in memories and, in a sense, is a showcase of family history – this is a quality we were asked to preserve. From the outside, we had an interesting prairie-style “canvas” to work with; and inside, we allowed the house’s unique features to guide our design decisions. Working closely with architects at Open Form, we created a serene and elegant space in harmony with its natural surroundings. Volume and perspective First, we went to work on the outside. We restored the house’s prairie style by recreating horizontal lines and bringing out the beauty of the natural wood. Next, we “exploded” the inside (formerly, a cramped and inward-looking place) to create a sense of space and possibility. Southern exposure suggested a floor-to-ceiling window – in this case covering both floors for optimal natural light. The splendid natural surroundings cried out for an opening in the southeast corner, in the heart of the living space, providing a stunning view of the stream nearby.

Inside, we opted for a clean contemporary look featuring horizontal lines and streamlined volumes. We wanted light; we wanted flow. The only bulky feature we kept was the natural stone chimney in the large central fireplace. Elegance and sobriety Above all, we wanted to avoid sterile black-and-white juxtapositions, which have been overused in recent years. Our goal was to create an elegant contemporary space by breathing new life into an architectural legacy from the previous century. To pull this off, we relied on subtlety and a cleancanvas approach that focused on lines, volumes and materials. For a perfect example of the power of combining horizontal lines and up-to-the-minute design, take a look at the kitchen. Our colleague, interior decorator Patrick Robichaud, delivered distinctive design totally in compliance with the project’s requirements. Furnishings and accessories were selected with the owner – a joint effort that resulted

in the sober and elegant finish we were aiming for. A home has life and character, it is something that is always evolving, and so some design touches will continue to be added over time. No compromises There’s more to high-end projects than budget considerations. Our customers grant us creative freedom and place their trust in us – and these are the things that spark our gratitude, drive our inspiration, and enable us to deliver our best work. Innovative graphical design specialists, Surface View, worked closely with the college and 3M Commercial Graphics to design, manufacture and install extraordinary, colourful and intricate artwork throughout a large covered space between the main buildings of the college. Working together as a team, Garth Hill College, 3M Commercial Graphics and Surface View discussed and developed concepts for pillar wraps, floor graphics and textured surfaces. Among the designs were smaller pillars presenting aspirational messages that express the college’s values and the experiences of the students. Chaos and confinement intense emotions and intimacy factors of the Kinoya equation For its latest Kinoya, interior designer Jean de Lessard has tapped into the sources to emulate in his design the primary spirit, function and aesthetics of the izakaya[2], as the latter was originally an informal place where people drank beer and sake. The transformation is particularly unusual that it explores through extreme design intimacy in relationships between people, making of Kinoya a true representation of the unique approach the designer has developed about the different ways of occupying a space. The notion of confinement is staged with simplicity using fractal geometry and the broken line: a box which shape recalls an articulated snake now fills the inside of the black box where of the previous Kinoya only remain the floral patterns. The box creates a break between the known/ predictable (the outside world, the opening) and the unknown/unpredictable (chaotic enclosed interior, full of nooks and crannies). "For a space to become Event or Emotion, it must generate its own energy. I designed an enclosed space that is totally focused on the business of partying. The design elements are deliberately oppressive or aggressive, so that it is anarchic, rough and where we are loudly heckled", explains Jean de Lessard. The vertical drop of 4 to 5 feet between the front and rear parts of the ceiling contributes to the cocoon effect.

The place is always full since the opening, despite the fact that one must stand shoulder to shoulder. The soft lighting and the cozy atmosphere makes it a friendly environment where the smell of wood mingles pleasantly with the aromas of mouth-watering dishes.

A durable material, wood has an exceptional capacity of resonance and absorption. The irregularity and angularity of the surfaces further deflect sound waves, helping to muffle the ambient noise. The reusedwood from barns is local and covers an area that represents 4,500 square feet. Boards of hemlock and white spruce of different width and thickness were installed in all directions.If this strengthens the idea of chaos, on the other end the gluedlaminated technique used for the installation provides in turn a perfect finish.

"Jean told me what he wanted to feel in this place. Where one had to be cramped also. The uncouth-tavern style decoration is left to its simplest expression: the furniture and lighting were salvaged from previous Kinoya, drawings and graffitis offend the eye and confirm the urban character of the establishment. Kakemono banners that are used to hide the street also perpetuate the Japanese tradition. In Japan, an izakaya is a place of socialization and of stress alleviation. Here at Kinoya, the narrow space forces to relate to one another, under his/her unavoidable gaze. The design has the West and the Far East (East Asia) beliefs about community spirit, closeness and brotherhood collide in a fun and joyful manner.

To create a warm and welcoming homeenvironment whilst retaining the airy openplan accommodation. The client requested two distinct looks for the summer and winter season with interchangeable accessories and furnishings.

Brief

Overview MPD London created a white linen summer look accessorised with white orchids that would enhance the riverside setting in summer months. For winter, a colour palette of gold, brown and black were chosen for warmth. The loose covers, gold accessories, and Persian rugs are easily removed and stored away for the summer period. The client had a collection of art books, original artwork and antiques that MPD London incorporated into the scheme.

Design Details The re-design was a general upgrade of all that had been done beforehand including architectural fittings and decoration. The modern building was a mixed-use development and the challenge was injecting warmth into the interior. Fabrics from J Robert Scott, Sacho Hesslein and De Le Cuona were used alongside antiques, Persian rugs and artefacts to give character and individuality to the space.

Wellbeing in the workplace Wellbeing is a bit of a buzz phrase at the moment: It covers health, happiness and what is generally good for us. Promoting it is crucial to office design and fit out as it’s proven that working in an optimum environment has a positive impact on productivity - happy members of staff make for better outcomes plus you’re more likely to retain key team players if you offer them an attractive working environment that meets all of their needs. Considerations for wellbeing should cover everything from being warm enough or cool enough to whether the office décor is nice and bright and there are adequate break out areas and spaces to eat and relax in. In an open plan environment, for example, it’s really important to be able to offer workers a degree of privacy for when they are making important business calls or during break periods.

The Sundar Italia vertical garden for the Reale Mutua building, Turin Project by Studio Kuadra The vertical gardens, green walls, are being used evermore frequently for their important esthetic effect to decorate both buildings and homes; they are amply appreciated for the feeling of wellness and tranquility derived from the presence of nature in private, public spaces or workspaces. Sundar Italia specializes in the realization of vertical gardens, actively collaborating with the architects for the integration of these walls in their projects. The company puts their own knowhow, the experience with internal botanicals, a vast selection of plants and also a state of the art technology that guarantees a continuous control of the vegetation walls and a easy long term maintenance at disposition. Sundar Italia was chosen to realize the vertical garden of the new Real Mutua headquarter in Turin.

Thus, we present you, thanks to the collaboration of the designers of Studio Kuadra, the Reale Mutua of Turin site case history. Studio Kuadra, the design studio, in a general plan for restructuring and requalification of the Real Mutua Turin site, put into act various modifications to the building to improve the environments according to their use, the lights and esthetics combining best the modernity of the new spaces and the history of the building. Details, furnishing and modern technology were introduced giving an innovative and contemporary aspect right upon entry; furthermore ‘we chose to use the vertical garden as a backdrop of the lobby to amaze the visitor with this natural touch inserted in the architectural precision of the historical building’ affirming the designers of Studio Kuadra. Moreover, the demolition of a portion of terrace base on the first floor allowed for more daylight in the hall, amplifying the perception of the space. Natural light and the use of the vertical garden are the two elements that permitted the project to achieve the intent to create a hybrid spaces blend’. The insertion of a vertical garden brings bright colors to the otherwise subdued and captivating tones of the internal environment creates, in effect, a contrast that pleasantly surprises. Sundar Italia and Studio Kuadra collaborated actively in the various phases of designing, form the preliminary steps to the development of the executive details.

The vertical garden was a ‘material’ completely new to the designers, and so, the collaboration with a company as highly specialized as Sundar Italy, allowed the best development of the job and all the executive details respecting the initial planning idea.

On the other hand for Sundar Italia, every project is a new challenge to develop the ideas of the client and designers with quality and professionalism. In this case the experience and knowhow was fundamental to be able to give life to a vegetation wall of great dimensions considering the structural complications; in fact, two weightbearing beams were hidden within the vertical garden, the natural light was insufficient and a precise calculation was needed for the insertion of the plants given the close vicinity of a stairway in steel and glass. Initially, together with the design studio, type of plants to insert were chosen according to the possibility of realization and installation; these needed to have two principal characteristics: create volume and defined lines, evident and clear, with particular â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;geometricâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; shapes, and be low-maintenance with little time needed for pruning and cleaning. The panels for the creation of the green wall, as routine, were made in-company and then transported on a controlled temperature truck to the Reale Mutua site, in the middle of the historical center of Turin. Later, following the plan, the company technicians installed, in one day, 150 square meters of panels onto a weightbearing structure created ad hoc. To remedy the scarce natural light, an artificial illumination system was prepared to guarantee not only a nice esthetic output but also the maintenance of the plants. The walls were equipped with a central line for irrigation and fertilization controlled 24/7 by a remote controlled system; in this way it is always possible to have a complete picture of the state of health and maintenance of the plants, deciding if and when to intervene, therefore cutting down on costs of management and maintenance.

Mark Currie and Maggy Howarth of Cobblestone Designs construct and install pebble mosaics for public spaces, parks and private gardens, using pebbles to produce unique decorative paving. Manageable sections of pavement are prefabricated for assembly on site. This method of construction ensures that the paving is very durable and perfectly flat and safe for pedestrians.

The mosaics vary from on-off site-specific commissions to a series of “Readymade” mosaics, available from stock, suitable for small gardens. We also have a range of “Plain Pebble” designs for installation by you or your contractor. Lunel and Sète offer two new museums to the Languedoc Roussillon region The recently opened Médard Museum in Lunel and the Maritime Museum in Sète are now part of a wide choice of cultural visits offered in Languedoc Roussillon. The region has supported the towns in the financing of these cultural amenities. Benefiting from new funds, the two museums stand out from the rest because of the way their architecture has been restored – they are both diametrically opposite in historical terms - and because of the content of their respective collections. The first collection contains five thousand artworks created between the 17th and 19th centuries, a collection based on the exceptional library of the bibliophile Louis Médard (1768-1841) from Montpellier. This museum is, above all else, a place of book mediation, of the history of the collection and the arts and crafts of the written word.

C+D Architecture The second one highlights the equally precious and rare legacy of the shipbuilder André Aversa and consists of extraordinary model ships complemented by jousting sets*, costumes, musical instruments, battle bulwarks and ornaments, spears and trophies. It’s a collection of articles tracing the social and economic history of the port of Sète from the 18th century to today. In Lunel, the Médard museum is part of the redevelopment of an old building (18th century) in the town centre which has housed the Town Hall, the tourist office and a library. In Sète, the Maritime Museum is located on a listed site in the former premises of IFREMER, a 1970s, anonymous, low rise building abandoned for a decade (located between the marine cemetery and the Marine theatre). The restoration of these two buildings was carried out by the agency C+D with Nicolas Crégut and Laurent Duport, both architects renowned for their contemporary achievements such as the Lycée Pierre-Mendès-France in Montpellier or the RBC Design Center in Montpellier in association with Jean Nouvel, and architects also known for the restoration (with extension) of several historic buildings, in particular the Hotel de Roubin and the Hotel de Sibour, for the religious museum at Pont-Saint-Esprit and the art gallery at the Chouleur Hotel in Nîmes. LINEA LIGHT For its headquarters in Padua, Porsche chooses Linea Light Group LED technology and the technical skill of Bovo srl. Performance, efficiency and energy savings have always been the objectives of the Linea Light Group, achieved by offering high quality products with particular attention to the environment and the consumer. It is no coincidence that Porsche Italia S.p.a. has chosen LED products to illuminate the brand new Boxster, Cayman Panamera and Cayenne displayed in its large, glazed open plan showroom, to allow the many Porsche lovers to admire the vehicles in all their splendour, even without natural light. The project includes replacing more than 400 light sources with new Linea Light Group LED products, installed both inside and outside the new showroom and in the offices. During the initial stages of the project net savings of over 60% were forecast for each area: following installation and measurement, these expectations were far exceeded, with an increase in savings of 15% compared to the forecasts. What is more, the annual net savings obtained are remarkable and, as confirmed directly by Porsche Italia,advantages have also been reported in the quality of this lighting that is entirely â&#x20AC;&#x153;Made in Italyâ&#x20AC;?.

The track spotlights outside the prestigious headquarters of Porsche Italia (150 W sodiumvapour lamp with a consumption of 1.89 kW and the usual yellow/orange effect) have been replaced by new Linea Light Group 43 W LED light sources, with a consumption of 0.57 kW installed in the Mini Ledweg. In addition to energy savings and the consequent financial benefits, now the Porsche colours can be admired even at night. As for indoor lighting in the showroom, 22 LED track spotlights have been installed by the group from Treviso which, in addition to reducing costs by a third, show the true colour of the bodywork, allowing customers to choose the car in the colour that they will see faithfully reproduced in direct sunlight. This is thanks to the CRI 95 technology of the LED chosen, which does not alter the light and so comes as close as possible to real sunlight.

The best result in terms of environmental impact has been achieved in the workshop areas: 24 100 W LED Flamp luminaires have replaced the old 250 W suspension lights and 22x4 W Illiuminator modules have been installed to highlight the details on the cars displayed in the showroom. With this latest intervention, for example, net savings of 80% have been recorded compared to the 150 W gas discharge lamps installed previously, with unparalleled advantages in terms of maintenance: the new LED light sources guarantee a working life of at least 25 years, compared to the 2-3 years of the previous lights. Edith 60x60 LED ceiling lights have been installed in the offices, whereas 68 W fluorescent tubes have been replaced by 26 W LED tubes in the warehouses. The project was possible thanks to the consultancy provided by Bovo S.r.l. in Rubano, Padua. Thanks to their experience and collaboration with Porsche Italia and their specialisation in installations for large- scale retail channels and commercial facilities in general, Bovo S.r.l. was able to complete all the stages of planning, installation and plant certification.

LK2 CONSULTANTS RE-INVENT STAMFORD AFC’S STADIUM

LEADING Lincolnshire architecture, sports and leisure firm LK2 has surpassed all expectations in delivering the new state-of-the-art £6 million sports centre and stadium in Stamford. The project was completed for Stamford AFC and its partners New College Stamford and Burghley House Preservation Trust (BHPT). The sustainable multi-sport project was initially part of a developerled scheme, which was intended to be self-funded through the sale of land for new housing to deliver a stand-alone football stadium for the relocation of Stamford AFC. However, LK2 utilised its expertise to undertake a detailed study to assess potential grant aid the project could receive, in line with the strategic aims and objectives of the Football Association & Sport England. LK2’s in-depth analysis, highlighted a local organisations which would benefit from improved sports & education facilities, resulting in New College Stamford joining the project as a key partner alongside Stamford AFC and BHPT. Paul Starbuck, director at LK2, said: “Over the course of this project we worked tirelessly to ensure all three partners benefited as much as possible. Each organisation not only gained enhanced and modern sporting facilities but also saved money – essentially spending less and achieving far more. “We are extremely proud of what has been achieved through this project. All the organisations involved have received political, cultural and financial benefits – alongside a future-proof business plan we have tailored for them, placing them in a great position moving forward.” LK2 acted as an interface between the partner organisations and the grant funding bodies over the course of the project, ensuring that the maximum amount of grant aid was achieved and securing around £3 million of partnership funding towards the delivery of the scheme.

Ian Evley, Stamford Football Development Centre chairman, said: “The facilities have enabled us to improve the quality and frequency of the sessions we put on, and there is the potential for young footballers here to go on and achieve great things. We want to grow and move forward as a club, and Borderville is proving to be the platform that will increase our chances of doing so.” The green belt development has not only met the needs and futureneeds of Stamford AFC, New College Stamford and BHPT – but is now a hub of sports excellence for the community. The impressive new centre comprises : four badminton court sports hall,, sports science facilities, three multi-functional teaching rooms, a function room, management suites, a third generation Football Turf Pitch, bistro and cooking facilities, football kitchen prep areas, physio and meeting rooms, a full-size grass 1st team pitch and stadium, a fitness suit, community grass pitches, parking and ancillary space. David Pennell, estates director at the Burghley House Preservation Trust, said: “This is an exciting facility that will be of benefit not just to the football club and its supporters, but also to students and many other community groups in and around Stamford.” The Stamford sports centre is the largest FA single funded project outside of National Centre at St. Georges Park and exemplifies LK2’s diverse skill-set. The firm not only designed the centre but also enhanced the project significantly into a sustainable multi-sport centre, through extensive research, collaborative working and a smart approach to funding. Through creating a comprehensive shared facility LK2 achieved a better provision of sports facilities in Stamford and ultimately attracted multi-million pound grant aid, with reduced long-term financial risk.

Investment divided into three phases, including (1) construction of the new Regional Blood Center building, (2) shelter for the mobile blood center [bus] and (3) the first in Poland specialized Center for Blood Cancer Diagnostics to be located within the existing building. At the moment, the first phase has been completed. The first phase building houses modern cool rooms and storages, blood collecting unit, a complex of advanced medical laboratories and blood radiation laboratory, offices and conference center. Within the building blood is being collected, tested, processed to divide into blood elements and purified with the technology based on radioactive materials.

The building elevation is finished with ceramics, including small ceramic tiles on the ground level and glazed ceramic panels on the upper floor levels. The upper levels consist of more than 2000 ceramic elements. Among them 50x100cm flat panels, vertical blinds and (for the first time in Poland) curved panels of 145cm and 195 cm radius. Three different shades of red were implemented to create irregularity on the surface of the all four elevations. Ceramic pipes (TERRART速BAGUETTE), placed at the uppermost level, protect the conference room from overheating as well as hide complicated and massive technological systems located at the roof level. These ceramic pipes add detail and make the enclosure lighter in its appearance.

The color scheme, the irregularity of the elevation leitmotif and the panelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s glossiness represent the richness of blood, often decribed as the gift of life. The geometry is inspired by the function of the blood center, the clash of biology with technology. Rounded elements represent biology, straight represent technology. The intentional vivid color scheme of the elevation, making the building visually suprising to the public, calls attention to the idea of the blood donation. Application of the glazed panels is inspired by the local Silesian building tradition, which is present in the historical building facades with the glazed bricks.

The interior design is based on the colors used in the context of the facade. The stairwell placed in the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s center, lit with the aid of natural sunlight, is finished with red ceramic tiles along the corridor. Red color is present on floors and walls as an accent. Most rooms are lit by two belts of windows. The lower window belt illuminates laboratory worktops placed along the outer walls while the upper belt, just below the ceiling, allows the infiltration of natural light to the remotest parts of the rooms. Thanks to glazed internal walls, the corridors are also lit with natural sunlight. The buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location is under the protection of the national historic preservation office.

State-of-the-art Hopewood Park sets new benchmarks for quality and long term value in modern mental health accommodation using Dura Cladding, composite timber cladding Deciding on a look for a new build or renovation can be a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multi-national organisation. The hospital design was inspired by Ryhope’s river valley and cleverly uses the sloping site to maximise the views towards the North Sea. The new mental health campus provides a safe recovery centred environment with generous and relaxing places to appreciate views to the coast and surrounding landscape which sets new benchmarks for quality and long term value in modern mental health accommodation. Aesthetics of a building are always subjective and can be a highly emotive subject especially for the façade of a building. An aspect that is not subjective though, are life cycle costs. As Dura Cladding does not require painting or staining and together with the long design life, despite initially costing more, composite cladding can actually work out significantly cheaper when life cycle costs are added into the equation.

Kemper System Enables Barnsley Town Hall To Keep Heritage Intact With its Portland Stone façade and its classical architecture, Barnsley Town Hall is one of South Yorkshire’s most distinctive landmarks and best loved buildings.

Stratex system is designed to enable the installer to choose between mechanical or adhesive fixings for the insulation and initially the contractor planned to use mechanical fixings.

When Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof as part of a programme of improvements to the building, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building.

“However, it was clear when the installation team started to drill pilot holes that the vibration could cause damage to the internal décor and potentially the ornamental glass dome inside the building. As a result, adhesive was used to fix the insulation.”

Explains Victoria Ramwell, technical sales representative of Kemper System: “The project involved installation of a new warm roof system to enhance the thermal performance of the building as well as providing a new waterproofing surface. “The town hall remained occupied throughout the programme and the building not only involved challenges in terms of the roof build up and complexity but also has delicate features that we had to protect during the works, affecting the way in which the programme was designed.”

To address these challenges, the Stratex warm roof system with Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing membrane was specified by Kemper System. Kemperol 2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless; ideal for use on occupied buildings where the odours from solvent based or so called low-odour products can be disruptive. Kemperol is also cold applied and therefore can be installed without hot works or the fire risk associated with them. The existing roof build up consisted of asphalt, followed by a screed and a further layer of asphalt. Barnsley Council were keen to reduce the weight on the roof and so the top two layers had to be removed before installing the new roof. The remaining asphalt surface varied in condition and a new vapour control layer had to be installed over large areas of the roof surface before installation of Kemper System’s Kempertherm insulation board. A tapered insulation scheme was chosen to aid with rainwater drainage. Stuart Hicks, marketing manager from Kemper System explains: “The

As the level of the new insulation was above the lower edge of the glass on the large lantern rooflight, and so as not to interfere with the structure, a drainage channel was created around the roof light and lined with the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane. Stuart continues: “The complexity of the roof meant that it would have been extremely difficult to install a new waterproof surface with anything other than a liquid membrane. “In addition to the roof light, above the internal glass ceiling dome, and the channel we had created around it, we had to contend with a high parapet wall and the outlets that come out of it, numerous skylights, a central plinth and two plant rooms on the roof.” The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane. Applied weton-wet in a single process, the liquid resin saturates a reinforcement fleece and cures to form a tough, flexible substrate that cannot delaminate. After completing the entire roof, red aggregate surfacing was applied to designated areas to create non-slip maintenance walkways. “We needed a roof refurbishment that would improve the town hall’s thermal performance and protect against water ingress” comments Tony Taylor from Barnsley Council. “The solution from Kemper System not only answered these requirements but, being sustainably sourced and solvent-free, also conformed to our environmental objectives and ensured that we could carry on using the building as normal without any unpleasant odours or disruption.”

Boston’s Tallest Residential Building, Designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Breaks Ground

Construction is under way for a 61-story residential tower that will house a hotel and luxury condominiums in Boston’s historic Back Bay. The building, known as Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences One Dalton Street, is being designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (Henry N. Cobb and Roy Barris, lead designers) and Cambridge Seven Associates (Gary Johnson, lead designer), collaborating architects. It will be the tallest building to rise in Boston since the John Hancock Tower, also designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and completed in 1976. The new $700 million tower is a project of Carpenter & Company, Inc., whose proposal was selected following a national competition to develop the site, which lies between Christian Science Plaza and the Prudential Center. For the architects, the redevelopment presents a fascinating design challenge, said Henry Cobb of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. “The project allows us to consider once again how a

tall building, together with the open space it frames, can respond creatively to the need for growth while showing appropriate respect for its historic urban setting.” The 211-room hotel will occupy the tower’s lower eighteen floors, with 188 residential condominiums on thirty-six floors above. Shaped as a soft triangle in plan and sheathed in low-reflectance highperformance insulating glass, the building rises from a graniteand-glass podium containing the condominium lobby and the public rooms of the hotel. Glass-screened incisions in the tower’s surface animate the building volume while accommodating operable windows on the condominium floors, whose upper levels feature balconies. The tower is part of a master plan that includes 30 Dalton—a 27-story residential building designed by the same team and developed by Pritzker Realty Group—and a 5,000-square-foot park designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.

Architectes Office The offices of agency NBJ Architects take seat in the heart of the historic center of Montpellier, near the Prefecture. The building in which the project is established is an 18th Century Town Building classified Historic Monument. The operation of rehabilitation and transformation of a program of residences into offices able to accommodate a structured architectural office was directed mainly towards the interior of the building.

One of the main issues of the project was to create an accommodating and dynamic workplace while preserving and developing the exceptional patrimonial character of the site. Thus, a particular attention was brought to the typology of the offices so that a visual coherence is preserved into the whole building. Each office has its own space but remains of connection with the unit of the project by the means of an architectural work of high quality. The agency opens on a crossing and generous space of reception. It is the catalyst of the other functions since it serves each entity inherent in an architectural office. It serves two broad open offices in row on the one hand, a majestic meeting room, a space of restoration as well as a large mezzanine. This one accommodates a library, a model studio like one second meeting room. Lastly, two broad and luminous offices, always in row supplement the unit. In addition, each office has broad openings towards outside, toward the courtyard or the street, so that each workspace can profit from an intense and natural luminosity throughout the day.

A smarter ‘plan-in’ solution for urban waste Invariably, a scattering of traditional collection bins isn’t enough to cope with busy places. Some discarded rubbish spends only a few seconds in a bin before overflow and a breeze send it on its way. But we seem to be stuck in ‘a small bin rut’, according to Dave Hughes, managing director of ESE World. That’s surprising given that effective management of urban waste is one of the most pressing problems communities face today.

They offer opportunities to segregate recyclable materials and more waste can be stored, and then moved with less frequent use of vehicles.

The body is made of concrete with steel reinforcement and absolutely watertight against ground and rain water. A semiunderground unit can be emptied in about two minutes by a vehicle with a single operator.
