Masterplans DreamCenter Landmark in Shanghai
Benoy, a world
leader in Architecture, Masterplanning, Interior and Graphic Design, is proud to announce its appointment as the Masterplanner behind the recently unveiled DreamCenter in Shanghai.
DreamCenter has been released as the leading element of the ‘West Bund Media Port’ project; one of the largest cultural investment projects currently undertaken in China. Located along the Huangpu River in Shanghai’s Xuhui District, the integrated development is the result of a dynamic collaboration between Lan Kwai Fong Group, DreamWorks Animation and CMC Capital Partners. With a land area of 152,300m2, the masterplan brings together 12 unique art, culture and entertainment venues to ignite inspiration as a cultural hub for the city. Key features include the ‘Dream Avenue’ Cultural Theatre District; Headquarters of Oriental DreamWorks which will become Asia’s top animation production base; Asia’s most iconic 500-seat IMAX Cineplex; and the exciting Lan Kwai Fong Entertainment and Lifestyle District. Eight themed outdoor plazas will work to interconnect these core hubs within the development. “Benoy is extremely thrilled and proud to be involved with the DreamCenter masterplan that shares the vision of the West Bund Media Port. As designers we feel passionately about extending the creative realm and DreamCenter’s visionary ideal will have a tremendous impact on the cultural and creative landscape of Shanghai”, commented Benoy’s Project Director, Brady Siu.
Benoy’s dynamic and comprehensive masterplan for DreamCenter has laid the foundation for the eight architectural identity for the scheme. Site work on the scheme spanning 463,000m2 in GFA will commence in 2014 “We see DreamCenter as a catalyst for change in Shanghai, a development that will culturally elevate its urban setting which is very exciting”, noted Andy Lai, Design Director at Benoy. “The scheme will propel Shanghai as the new hub for imagination and creativity in the country”.
Benoy is currently working with Lan Kwai Fong Group on the Lan Kwai Fong Wuxi scheme which is set to open in 2015 as a key lifestyle and entertainment destination for the lakeside city. In Shanghai, Benoy’s masterplanning capability also notably includes the future third central business district for the city, Lujiazui Qiantan Pudong. The masterplanned development is set to attract over RMB 10 billion in future Shanghai. www.benoy.com

Silver Kite Expands a Unique Concept in Architectural Ironmongery Silver Kite found, through research, that architects and interior designers were looking for a new comprehensive range of architectural ironmongery. To answer this, the manufacturer developed its Arbor range of unique products, which the company has now extended.
Director, Nick Rogers explained, “We originally launched this range a few years ago and found that architects and designers welcomed the idea of using the beauty of natural wood with the hard wearing qualities of brass components. However, the range was incomplete.” He continued, “So we have extended our Arbor range with the inclusion of electrical accessories and introduced cabinet hardware. SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Nic London of N London Construction.Co.uk.Ltd is just finishing a timberframed house he is building using hemp blocks. It’s on the end of a terrace of Victorian cottages in Enfield. It’s the first of its kind in the UK. Developing micro sites like this could help to alleviate the UK housing shortage. Master Builder’s Nicky Rogers visited this tiny site with Nic when building was still in progress, just before the lime render was applied inside and out. Nic first saw hemp blocks being shown by Hemp Construct (HC) at a UK exhibition. The company manufactures its Hemp HC eco-block using industrial, UK grown hemp shiv, natural slaked lime and a mixture of other UK natural minerals. Made in Essex, the blocks have a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K and following BRE assessment; the timber and hemp block (no cement) kit system has been given an A+ rating. Such was Nic’s interest in the system that he travelled to Carcassonne in southwest France where the construction of a 10,500m2 winery was in full swing (swig!?) to learn exactly how to build using this method.

Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites, looks at a real life case study where composite timber cladding has been used to renovate the look of an older office and factory building.
Completed transformation Deciding on a look for a new build or renovation can be a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multinational organisation. Many wrestle with the dilemma of using modern materials for a sleek and fresh look or the use traditional materials such as wood. Whilst natural wood cladding represents a sizeable chunk of the wall cladding and façade market place, it is an area that must be fully understood if you are to achieve the look you want for a long period of time. That is because most timber

Whereas traditional wood planks require regular painting or staining to preserve their natural beauty and protect them, UV inhibitors can be added to a quality timber composite at the point of manufacture to protect against the elements. Another thing to remember when choosing a supplier is that of up to 25 years – at least a decade longer than the lifecycle of the average hardwood alternative. Quality timber composite cladding is further characterised shrink, warp or rot.

with the recently launched 150/21 Weatherboard product in Barn Black for the main factory and 200/21 Flush in Pale Grey for the more front of the premises. The series of photos taken during the installation help illustrate not only how relatively simple the material is to install for professionals, but also how much of a transformation can be accomplished across a large area with a relatively small outlay. Most visitors to the premises do not believe that natural wood has not be used to create a such a traditional barn look, and are excited about the prospect of having little maintenance to do and are attracted by the fact that according to accelerated UV test results, the material will retain the vast proportion of its colour throughout its 25 year design life. Aesthetics are always subjective and can be a highly emotive subject for the façade of a building. What is not subjective though is life cycle costs. Due to the lack of maintenance required, and the long design life, although composite cladding purchase costs may be higher than some natural wood cladding, it cheaper when life cycle costs are considered. Being 87% recycled and available as FSC © 100% the green aspect is thoroughly covered as well.
In Progress: Footbridge Over the Marne
The footbridge links the centre of Meaux, more particularly the station, to Grand Ile, a mediaeval district located within a bend of the Marne. The decision to locate the bridge on the bend of the river allows it to provide a greater number of views, and increases the ways in which the structure can interact with its environment. The location features a high degree of urban development as well as landscaping, with new buildings, a pedestrian thoroughfare and views of the Cathedral on one side, and the weir on the other. We took account of every aspect of these urban and landscaping elements when locating the footbridge, which runs alongside the park and riverbank on the town centre side before rising and crossing the Marne and joining the other bank, arriving perpendicular to the Place de Fleurus. The location makes sense in terms of place, and also encourages pedestrian itineraries.
Archetech - Issue 15 [Page 20]
The route will certainly provide an alternative link between the two
both landscaping and environmental Despite the complex considerations and wheelchair users. This involves thoroughfare,
a combination of urban planning,
architecture and technique. The needs in terms of height clearance for the river and a gentle incline resulted in an extremely slim, light structure; at the same time, a minimum thickness is required. This apparent contradiction was resolved by providing the gentle gradient on only half of the structure, with the other, larger half becoming a bench which also conceals the footbridge’s load-bearing structure. In addition to providing a crossing point, the project also opens up new views over the town, particularly the cathedral. Its function as a form of which serve as a bench facing the as not to dazzle strollers. The footbridge forms an integral part of the urban development of Meaux. It is destined to become a consistent, integrated part of the existing network of thoroughfares, whilst being natural (and its use as logical) as that of a pavement. Architecture & Engineering The central section of the footbridge is supported by stairs linking it to the bank, aligned with the cathedral. The innovative and contemporary steel structure of the deck rests on piles built into the banks, with no support in the river itself. This provides discreet, lightweight support for the timber and resin span and represents an asset in
As already mentioned, the need to have a load-bearing steel beam with a height of 80 cm led us to design a footbridge section is accessible to wheelchair users, while the second, which conceals the load-bearing structure, stands 40 cm higher, creating a form of bench for the whole length of the bridge. During the design of the footbridge, there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between sketch plans and technical feasibility and between concepts and constraints. All this has had an impact principle, its proportions, its span and its height. The unbroken route from one bank to the other is reinforced by the use of asphalt and timber surfacing on the access at each end as well as on the footbridge itself. Asphalt is hardwearing and non-slip, and also provides continuity with other thoroughfare surfacing. The wood used for the decking is rot-proof, grooved and
Another important aspect of the footbridge environment is its balustrading. Using an extremely lightweight stretched mesh creates an atmosphere more akin to the bridge of a ship than to a traditional footbridge. Compact vandal-proof units embedded beneath the handrails provide lighting which is clear but not blinding.

TIME CAPSULE BURIED AS ARLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL NEARS COMPLETION
Archetech - Issue 15 [Page 32]
PUPILS and staff at a Warwickshire primary school have buried a time capsule at the site of their new £3.9 million school as construction of the building nears completion. Items including photographs, newspapers, letters from some of the children, and a DVD were put into the capsule to commemorate the year the school in Arley, Warwickshire was built. The ceremony at Arley Primary School was attended by teachers, pupils, Marcus Jones MP for Nuneaton, and representatives from construction firm Willmott Dixon and construction procurement, design and consultation specialists Scape. Work started on the construction of the new school in July last year. It is due to open at the end of March. The new school will amalgamate Gun Hill Infant School and Herbert Fowler Junior School, and will accommodate up to 315 children. Brigitte Letts, head teacher at Arley Primary School, said: “This is a really exciting time for all of us at Arley Primary. The new school will provide a wonderful learning environment for the children of this community.” Arley Primary School is being built
using a system called Sunesis, which uses standardised but visually appealing designs to reduce costs and construction timescales. Mark Robinson, chief executive at Scape, said: “Sunesis provides high quality, modern schools which are delivered on average 12 months faster and 30 per cent cheaper than market alternatives – which is what makes them so appealing. “Sunesis gives councils that need to improve their learning spaces and provide more places for growing numbers of pupils, real value for money without any compromise on standards.” Tim Carey, product director for Willmott Dixon, said: “At a time when local authorities are under increasing pressure to save money, Sunesis is ideal for councils wishing to reduce the costs of their new school buildings. “Warwickshire County Council was the first local authority to recognise the benefits of using Sunesis for the provision of new school buildings where in a few weeks’ time pupils and staff will be able to enjoy a brand new learning environment.” Launched in 2011 by Scape and Willmott Dixon, Sunesis has delivered more than £25m worth of schools to date, with a further £22m underway.
In 2012, Warwickshire County Council was the first local authority in the UK to use a Sunesis design for Oakfield Primary School’s new building in Rugby. Arley Primary School has been built using the Keynes model from the Sunesis standardised range and comprises 11 classrooms, a hall, catering kitchen, staffroom and offices, as well as an outdoor play area. The Sunesis primary school range also includes the Newton, Paxton and Dewey models, with other offerings tailored for the Leisure and Care sectors.

Daniel Libeskind Designs Apartment Building for Berlin
Studio Daniel Libeskind has released images of his latest project: a 10,000 square meter residential building planned for the center of Berlin. Occupying a half-acre corner site in the neighborhood of Chausseestrasse, “Chausseestrasse 43 will be encased by a metallic-coated ceramic facade shaped to maximize exposure to natural light.
The building, which is planned for completion in 2015, will provide 73 one- to four-bedroom apartments. At its base will be underground parking, street-level retail and a common outdoor area for residents. Perched on top, at the building’s prow, will be a high-end penthouse with its own private outdoor patio and expansive views of the city.
The façade cladding is made of a three-dimensional stoneware tile that Libeskind designed with the Italian company Casalgrande Padana. As the architect described, “The geometric ceramic panels not only create an expressive metallic pattern, but they possess surprising sustainable

Calor LPG – low carbon energy beyond the gas main Calor’s experience suggests that the benefits of LPG are often not considered, when replacing an oil boiler. With many old oil boilers running at below 50% efficiency the temptation has been to simply upgrade the appliance to a better performing modern oil-burning equivalent. However, switching to a new LPG boiler can deliver much more. LPG prices tend to be more stable than oil prices, so switching to LPG enables clients to budget more accurately. Furthermore the overall running costs of a system, its capital cost and true operating efficiency, is an area in which LPG can beat oil. Working with Blades Low carbon Systems, Calor can now offer LPG heating solutions that operate at even higher system efficiencies than new oil systems. Calculations indicate that the savings achieved more than offset any additional costs associated with switching fuels. The Blades boiler system has been designed to deliver up to 97% heating system efficiency, working with a building’s traditional hot radiator system. By contrast, many oil boiler systems seldom run anywhere near their quoted boiler efficiency of 95% when heating an existing, old radiator system. Instead they typically run at around 85% efficiency. Having established that running an LPG system can actually be cheaper than oil, CalorForce, Calor’s in-house engineering and installation team, can undertake any necessary work to switch from oil. The supply contract, tank and pipework installation, plus the physical heating solution can all be offered in one simple end to end process. Calor can even arrange removal of your existing oil tank and boiler. The advantages of LPG for commercial users in off-gas areas go much further than cost-saving and convenience. LPG is the lowest carbon, offgas mains fossil fuel, emitting 11.7% less CO2 per kWh than oil. Oil leakage is becoming a major concern for commercial users, costing some businesses thousands of pounds in clean-up costs and fines. Unburnt LPG is carbon neutral, and simply evaporates into the atmosphere. Similarly oil is relatively easy to steal, whereas the theft of LPG is rare. LPG is now widely recognised as the most appropriate fossil fuel for providing heating and hot water to modern, low carbon, off-gas industries and businesses.

The inTelligenT sysTem A home AT your service Have you ever wondered how comfortable your living could be if you did not have to remember about and trouble yourself with trivial daily activities? What would your life be if the light was always right for you, if the heating kept a comfortable temperature when you were watching a film and automatically switch to economy when not needed? Freedom from a series of mundane tasks may not seem to be something special at first. Yet just like with many other things, a change for the better is profoundly felt and only when you have to return to previous solutions do you see what you really lose. People who know this best are those who already benefit from intelligent systems: after all, “comfort gets you addicted”.
Let us consider this example.
Lighting control is one of the most frequently adopted solutions among intelligent systems. Not only does this function allow you to turn off all the lights when you leave home, it also lets you customise the lighting configuration to your individual needs. Professional interior designers know perfectly what lighting types are best for specific activities: playing with children, reading, listening to music, a film show at home or an evening meeting with friends – each requires a special type of lighting. In order to ensure a varied interior lighting, each room is equipped with different luminaires that emit specific types of light. Creating a proper mood in the room requires turning on a specific configuration of lights; the more elaborate the light background is the more complex is the lighting configuration. An intelligent system radically simplifies the situation: a menu, a set of buttons or even a remote control (comfort is what we want, right?) lets you quickly switch the lights to the mode which suits us best at the moment.
An intelligent system knows what is the light you like when watching films – just press a button to adjust the lights in your room; your taste should always be considered
As seen in the example above, the intelligent system can provide for your comfort in a very wide perspective. Many people indeed value the benefits of intelligent solutions, yet
What precisely can the intelligent home systems, a system which cares for your needs, offer?
they still view them as a luxury available only for the few chosen ones. Naturally, some of the marketed solutions definitely exceed the financial limits of many; yet as turns out, equally functional alternatives can be available without any problems. An interesting offer can be an intelligent home system based on advanced alarm control units such as INTEGRA by SATEL. Apart from the complete sense of comfort given by a well-designed alarm system, the functionality of SATEL control units allows building systems which care for the comfort of your daily life: control over heating, A/C, lights and plant watering are just a few sample solutions possible with the product. Note that the wide offer of wireless devices does not require troublesome cable laying to create an advanced intelligent system installation. Moreover, the modular design of the system allows easy extension of its functionality in the future, when new needs or possibilities appear.

Inzell Speed Skating Stadium
For more than 10 years the Local Authority at Inzell in Germany had been pushing for a roof over the existing speed skating track to secure safe training conditions and to guarantee international competition conditions. Following an architectural competition in 2008, a planning group consisting of Behnisch Architects from Munich and Pohl Architects from Jena was awarded the design contract for the speed skating stadium.
In March 2010, following a public tendering process Grossmann-Bau GmbH from Rosenheim was awarded the contract for the construction of the new stadium on condition that it would be ready for use by the end of December 2010 and available to host the World Speed Skating Championships in March 2011. WHB-Wehmeyer, the parent company of Wehmeyer UK Ltd, was awarded the sub-contract for the on-site erection. Wehmeyer and Grossmann work together on many projects in Germany and in the UK. Both companies are around 100 years old and are highly respected throughout Europe for their reliability and technical expertise. They are renowned for the construction of many of Europe’s iconic award winning glulam buildings. For example: The Pavilion of Hope in Hannover, the Regional Railway Station. The structure The main supporting structure consists of 10 trusses in the straight sections and 10 supporting beams each in the south and north curved sections. The trusses span a width of 82.50 m with a spacing of 12.65 m. Radial trusses in the north and south section were designed as I-girders. The total hall length is 210.0 m. 40 reinforced concrete pillars and allows horizontal displacement of the trusses in either direction. Spherical bearings allow horizontal displacement of the trusses of up to 12 cm and perpendicular displacement of up to 6 cm. Horizontal loads are then eventually transferred to the reinforced concrete pillars. The entire ice rink is built on a total of 58 drilled piles reaching depths of up to 37 metres into the ground which is partially composed of sea clay. The roof trusses are surmounted by 17 feature of the roof. They protrude from the roof area itself by up to 6.0 metres and look like crescent- shaped portholes. The maximum width of a shed is 12.65 m and the maximum length is 30m. The loadings on the roof are quite remarkable: Dead weight, without structure, with lower roof layer 105.0 kg/m2 snow loading 495.0 kg/m2 wind according to DIN, zone 1 temperature +15 to -25 K resistance time of 30 minutes. The roof covering was a type of EDPM.
The main trusses The top chords and the pillars of the main trusses are made of glulam timber GL 28c/28 H. Lower chords and diagonals are made of steel S 355. The construction principle used was: ‘best use of materials.’ All tension elements are made of steel and all pressure elements are made of glulam timber. Dimensions of a top chord: max width = 104 cm, max height = 118 cm, max length = 49m Transportation The proximity of Grossmann’s factory to Inzell and the resulting low transportation costs, was one reason that Grossmann was awarded the contract. A total of 40 oversize transports with lengths of up to 49.0 m from Rosenheim to Inzell (approx. 65 km) and approximately 200 additional material and component transports are a cost factor that should not be underestimated. Assembly of the trusses The trusses were assembled on site; loading the existing ice skating surfaces with the structure or with heavy-duty machinery was not permitted. Easy-to-install connections with few bolts and dowel pins made it possible to keep the work time and machinery usage time on site to a minimum. n each case trusses were assembled in two halves. Three caterpillar cranes were used ranging from 200 tonnes to 600 tonnes each. The maximum weight of one truss half was 65 tons. The trusses were 9.8m deep in the centre. Additional supports were placed underneath the trusses during truss mounting. These heavy-duty towers were required to prevent vertical deformation of the lattice trusses. In 2011 Inzell Speed Skating Stadium was awarded the accolade World Sports Building of the Year by the World Architectural Festival

Statement Piece Installations: Design Shanghai 2014 by Dominic and Frances Bromley At the beginning of this month, Design Shanghai 2014 was home to four of our bespoke Shoal sculptural luminaires (as well as Frances and Dominic!). Making its public debut was a Shoal made from over 300 kiln- radiating a spectrum of colour ranging from the bright amber of the bulb, through to rich claret tones. Also being exhibited, for the in 24ct gold.
As with all our Shoals, each piece carries a unique reference and name-tag to endorse their patronage. As dear as white bone china is to us, it was lovely having a splash of colour in the studio and we hope to further develop our work with glass in the future. We are inspired by interaction with our clients. Please don’t hesitate to forward this newsletter to those who you think will appreciate the work we do. You never know, you might be the catalyst for the creation of a new design that you see featured here in later months. Whether you’re interested in a special sculpture which will become part of your life or have a design requirement which needs an initial discussion, do please get in touch.

The Towers, Didsbury Through clever use of Picture-Perf, the architect was able to use a leaf design perforated into sheet metal to cover bin stores, bicycle shelters and by the fabricator and the colour chosen ties in perfectly with the setting of the business park. The bin store, with the leaf design, is positioned under a horse chestnut tree and the sun shadows result, the bin store blends in with its surroundings and does not interfere with its picturesque environment.
Archetech - Issue 15 [Page 66]
Before the project started we got an idea of the budget that was available and we worked within that. The original design was very expensive to produce but we were able to work around the client’s budget to come up with something that The Towers in Didsbury is a very prestigious business park set in a conservation area in South Manchester. The buildings are surrounded by mature trees and there is a large lawn area with picnic benches for the employees to relax and enjoy lunch in favourable weather conditions. The aesthetic appeal of the site is important and needs to be sympathetic to the environment and we were conscious of this during the design phase with the architect.
Picture-Perf What is Picture-Perf? – It is an image made from numerous small holes primarily in metal. Holes are punched into metal in approximate proportion to the pixels in a photo to give a 3D Image detail is controlled by changing the size and spacing of the perforation in relation to the panel size. New Forest House from PAD studio The ‘New Forest House’ is set within a stunning 18.5 acre plot, located adjacent to ancient woodland and heath, in the New Forest National Park. The new building has been carefully conceived in order that the proposals minimise the impact on the site and its sensitive surroundings.
The main house and guest annexe...

...are orientated to maximise solar gain and utilise renewable technologies for heating and hot water requirements. The materials used throughout are sustainable, durable and locally sourced where possible – in harmony with the site and its surroundings.
Archetech - Issue 15 [Page 75]
The architectural objective has been to create a simple building whose form, scale materials and detail reinforce the character, distinctiveness and history of the site locally and within the wider context of the New Forest.
The architectural concept was straightforward: Two simple volumetric forms located along a spine wall. Upon arrival the wall screens distant views to the South focusing attention upon the ancient beech trees to the North. Stepping through a gap in the wall the experience changes as the site gradually unfolds and the landscape beyond is revealed. On a practical level the wall acts as a retainer for the earth that was excavated to form the natural swimming pond and basement, and as thermal mass to regulate The wall bears the imprint of local Douglas Fir taken from the wood adjacent to the site, and is a palimpsest rewriting of the history of the site. The external landscape infuses this house as the boundary between the two is blurred.
