Situated in a prominent location overlooking the city of Winchester and its beautiful surrounding countryside stands Four Views. This striking upside-down build contrasts with its conventional neighbours, displaying a grey aluminium framed windows.
In 2011, we were approached by a couple wishing to build a new house. They wanted a life experience to immerse themselves in, having recently lost a daughter; a project that would give them a positive focus and a fresh start for them and their family. Taking responsibility for their brief very seriously, research into building a house that could help them move forward, heal and bring them happiness began. Through extensive research we found a wealth of information on the connection between

This simple layout became the foundation on which the principles of the 3N’s could be built, allowing them to be incorporated into all aspects of the design. Knole Walnut Beaded kitchen by Martin Shepherd, Oxford Kitchens & Bathrooms The Brief
Having lived in their property for three decades, Mr and Mrs Batchelor, from Henley-on-Thames, decided to undertake a huge renovation project to rejuvenate the kitchen and living areas. Built in 1935 by Sir William Morris, British motor manufacturer, the original features including squash courts today. The challenge was to turn three- rooms into a spacious open plan kitchen-dining room, suitable for hosting large parties.
The Solution
With the freedom to create a totally bespoke design, the Knole Walnut Beaded kitchen was selected as the Stoneham range of choice.
The state-of-the-art appliances: Miele Mastercool top-range ovens, combi-microwave, large conditioning wine cabinet in the dining area and integrated multi-room sound system, provide the An architecturally interesting project, the challenge was to overcome the steel construction work within the original walls. Thanks to collaboration between the builders and Martin Shepherd of Oxford Kitchens, the Batchelors now have the striking open-plan and large entertaining space they were looking for.

Adding true personality, the birds-eye centre panels are made from Maple/Pippy Burr - a veneer unique to the client. They provide a wonderful textured contrast to the glacier white corian worktops and aral green glass splashbacks. Designed around an arresting horseshoe-shaped island, the couple now have the perfect space for cooking, entertaining, and watching over the grandchildren through the large bi-folding doors. Featuring an integrated Miele wok burner, induction hobs, teppanyaki and sink, the island doubles up as an informal breakfast bar.

“Vanke Plaza brings international style to the capital’s new emerging area, and has established itself as a successful portfolio addition to one of China’s largest real estate developers.”
“To be chosen for this maiden development by Vanke highlights Benoy’s leadership within the international retail sector”, highlighted Benoy Director and Beijing Studio Head, Omid Ferdowsian. “Vanke Plaza brings international style to the capital’s new emerging area, and has established itself as a successful portfolio addition to one of China’s largest real estate developers.” Mr Wang Shi, Vanke Chairman, visited the shopping mall during the grand opening and spoke highly of Benoy’s design, “I’m extremely proud that Vanke has built such a trendy retail mall. The interior spatial planning and design could compete with most retail projects in Beijing, or even in New York and Tokyo.”
“We wanted to incorporate natural light and a connection to the rolling mountains on the district’s horizon”, further explained Omid Ferdowsian. “The large roof skylight over the main atrium acts as a visual centrepiece for the mall. Below, the design is undulating with subtle natural references found throughout the materials. On the top level, indoor and outdoor plants sit side by side, crowning the mall in greenery.”
Archetech - Issue 16 [Page ****]
The design concept has also allowed the retailers to be the focal point of the interiors with a neutral colour palette and curved approach to the retail arcades. To solve the issue of connectivity, the 140,000m2 retail and leisure development utilises a central arc channel to connect the two main entrances at either end of the mall. As an addition to Vanke Dream Town, Vanke Plaza complements the range of facilities in the Changping district, providing a vital retail centre for the of opening the development attracted more than 140,000 visitors. Vanke Plaza follows on from the success of Benoy’s portfolio in Beijing which also includes the award-winning EAST Hotel and mixed-use INDIGO development which both opened in 2012.

Complementing the district’s famous tourist and natural attractions, Vanke Plaza has melded its commercial design with the local landscape.

P C Henderson helps improve the learning environment and playtime at the Lowther Primary School P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide System has been installed in the second phase of refurbishment for Lowther Primary School, London Borough of Richmond, to help transform the facilities and complement the existing building. Part of the second phase extension doubled the size of the primary school with a new two-storey building, taking it from single form entry to two-form entry. As part of this phase of the project, P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide hardware was installed helping create a dramatic entrance to the playground. The extension creates easier access to the playground and provides more natural light thanks to the large sliding doors. The hardware is easy to operate and also helps keep us feel safe and warm in the winter. When we did the masterplan all those years ago I don’t think we could’ve even dreamt that we would have such wonderful facilities and resources here at Lowther – well we have and it’s marvellous.” To meet the needs of Richmond Council, Lowther Primary School building via a glazed link bridge. This unlocks the door, lifts the door up from its weather tight position and allows it to slide easily on the carriages with minimal friction. Once open the door can be lowered at any position and locked by moving the handle combination of the multi-lock mechanism and concealed position of the carriages, excellent security. The system can hold doors up to 300kg and is available in three CE rated weather levels. The project was registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) which scored the process 36.5 out of 40 for its which encourages best practice through safety, environmental welfare and community care. P C Henderson’s hardware can help utilise space in schools and maximise potential. For example rooms such as assembly halls can be divided into extra classrooms with sliding or folding doors. Standard or cupboard doors can eliminate the room needed for a swing door to function by using sliding doors which are also the safer option as they eliminate the intrusive swing door.

The SCHIEDEL ABSOLUT XPert – 1st Passivhaus certified Chimney System The UK’s largest manufacturer of Chimney Systems, Schiedel Chimney Systems Ltd, has just launched the ABSOLUT XPert Chimney System with an Integrated Insulated Combustion Air Shaft. The XPert Chimney System, is a state of the art system and it has just scooped the ‘2014 Fluing and Ventilation Product of the Year’ from the Hearth & Home Trade Show where it was officially launched earlier this month. Designed for the new generation of air-tight homes, Schiedel Absolut XPert is the first Passivhaus certified chimney system in the world. Air tightness is built into the system. Suitable for use on all fuel types, with its GW3 rated ceramic profiled liner, Absolut XPert offers condensate resistance even after a soot fire. Modern heating technologies place enormous demands on a chimney system. On the one hand, low flue gas temperatures from energy efficient appliances including Gas, Oil and Pellets lead to condensate forming within the chimney. On the other hand, Chimneys used on solid fuel applications must also be capable of withstanding a chimney fire. Commenting on this innovative new product David Wright Marketing Manager for Schiedel UK said: “As a company, Schiedel
Page 37.indd 1
Chimney Systems is continually looking at the needs of the market. The Absolut XPert, extends the stove market range by providing houses with the comfort and aesthetics of a stove, where there is no need for heating, but there is a need for a system to heat water. Understandably we are absolutely delighted to have already received the industry’s highest accolade at our launch event.”
Challenge 2 - Heat transmission to the outside of the building via the chimney block. The top and bottom of the chimney are the two most sensitive areas, when it comes to heat transmission between the warm interior of the house and the cold exterior. The Absolut XPert system has specifically designed thermal insulation blocks to prevent this heat transmission.
“When designing the Absolut XPert, we had to ensure it was able to satisfy both the needs of modern heating technology and the latest energy efficiency building techniques. The Government wants all new-build homes to be zero-carbon from 2016, so this is a market that is set to expand rapidly.”
Challenge 3 - The supply of air to the appliance in an air tight house. The modern house is efficiently sealed against drafts, which means that combustion air has to be brought directly to the appliance. The Absolut XPert system has an integrated insulated air shaft which supplies the appliance with the right amount of air it needs for combustion, drawn directly from above the roof, minimising problems due to prevailing winds.
Schiedel Absolut XPert represents a comprehensive solution to the 4 main challenges raised by modern heating technology combined with the latest energy efficient building techniques. Challenge 1 - Condensation forming on the chimney block. If external temperatures are very cold, then moisture from the surrounding air can turn to condensation on the surface of the block, leading to damp spots, mould and a possible risk to health ensues. The Absolut XPert system employs a core of foam concrete as insulation in the blocks that form the shaft, ensuring that block surface temperatures remain above the critical dew point.
Challenge 4 – How to cope with the extremes of temperature – resistance to condensate even after a chimney fire. The Absolut XPert profiled liner has been tested and approved with a GW3 designation meaning that it is soot fire resistant, condensate resistant even after a chimney fire and is corrosion resistant on gas, oil and solid fuel applications. GOOD LOOKING, LOW SURFACE TEMPERATURE HEATING
THAT’S TOTALLY CONTROLLABLE... In any building – from a home to a public space where the occupants or visitors are young, elderly or vulnerable, low surface temperature heating is either required by legislation or is a sensible consideration – or both. As a result of legislation and increased awareness of the potential dangers of high temperature heating surfaces, the production of low surface temperature products has become a valuable and growing niche market. So it’s encouraging when a totally new approach to a problem comes onto the market and even more so when that new approach has been thought through and installed knowing it will meet the requirements of the building or homes concerned perfectly. Leading electric heating specialist Ecolec has launched a pioneering new heating system based on a for a space saving, electric low surface temperature panel radiator system. The requirement involved a need for a wireless controlled heating system that allowed individual room temperatures to be controlled and for a maximum of 55°C (+/- 1°C) surface temperature of the panels to be achieved. It’s what Ecolec calls ‘Safe to Touch’ heating at 55°C.
Page 40.indd 1
Having installed the system and proved that it worked perfectly, with incredible control the warmth in each room individually, it was clear that the system could work in a wide range of other applications – being perfect for nurseries, schools, rest and care homes, healthcare buildings, commercial premises and public areas and of course homes and apartments. In particular it has already seen interest from developers of sheltered housing and assisted living apartment developments but would be equally relevant for any form of housing where potentially vulnerable people might be living, working or visiting.
alternative to a wet heating system extension, when a building is refurbished and rather than replacing or upgrading a boiler to cope with the additional space heating requirement, the controllable slim line electric panel radiators could be a option. Full details of all the Ecolec electric heating options can be obtained by visiting www.ecolec.co.uk, calling on 01902 457575 or by emailing sales@ecolec.co.uk and asking for information.

At night, the ribbon windows intersect as beams of light on the facade, which animate and represent the dynamism of sport. The development utilises the various heights in topography to straighten walkways and builds a connected ring the East: Spectators make their way to the main courtyard from the parking in the North-East, and from there gain access to the transparent entrance hall using the directly connected, encircling foyer-ring. The site at Shoeburyness is an untamed stretch of coastline just around the corner from Southend. It is characterised by big skies and timber groynes with distant views of a cold war barrier, huge ships, and power plants. The beach grades from pebbles, shells and broken bricks down to estuarial mud. Beach Huts were positioned on the site until the 1980s and continue to line much of the Southend sea front. characteristics of beach huts to sense of variety and individuality within the overall pattern, a robust and simple form, and the creation of an intimate space within a big landscape. Our proposal creates distinctive beach huts with an undulating from the promenade behind and above the site. Gaps between the huts allow views out to the sea and the planted margins between the beach and the land. The huts are oriented to the south with an assymetrical plan which gives plenty of sitting space at the front overlooking the view and a narrower working and storage space to the rear. The orientation and form of the huts means that each hut has a

The beach hut walls are formed from recycled timber pallets, bolted into a frame and lined with triple wall polycarbonate sheeting. The wall cavities will crushed glass, shells etc. laid in strata to create an individual pattern for each hut as well as providing thermal mass, privacy and security. Above eaves level a clear polycarbonate lining allows afternoon sunlight into the huts. The roofs, seen from above, are with sea hardened sedum which is now being colonised by local plants. The sea elevation consists of full height plywood panels painted in a range of colours, one half divided into stable doors and be half or fully opened as suits the weather and the occupants, screened changing space inside the huts and are painted with industrial scaled hut numbers on the outside. The robust internal ply linings make it easy for each hut owner to customise their own space.

style and luxury, designed to make a statement Keramag Design has launched the new Xeno² collection, adding to its luxury, contemporary brand of bathroom sanitaryware and furniture. The range is ideal for specifiers and designers looking to create distinctive bathrooms in high end private properties and in the commercial sector in luxury hotels, spas and resorts. Combining impeccable quality and contemporary elegance, Xeno² has been designed by Robin Platt who has a pedigree of successful design collaborations including the luxury German tableware brand Rosenthal. This is his debut collection for Keramag Design. Design-wise, Xeno² is informed by the trend identified by the company as ‘soft geometry’ in bathroom ceramics. It embodies contemporary design but expresses it in a softer style of minimalism. Xeno² combines geometrically designed flat surfaces with defined soft shapes, offering a range that is progressive but whose elegance also ensures it has longevity. Says Ilaria Genovese, Product Manager for Keramag Design
Page 49.indd 1
“The softer design styling on Xeno² is an emerging trend for specifiers to get on board with and create bathrooms with design differentiation but with the noted Keramag Design qualities of elegance and premium quality.” The collection offers a comprehensive range of washbasins, hand rinse basins, a Rimfree toilet, bidet, mirrors and furniture with ultra-smooth surfaces, pushto-open operation and integrated LED lighting. There are five sizes of washbasin in 400, 600, 900, 1200 and 1400mm, supplied with or without tap holes and some offering an avant-garde asymmetrical design. All are designed to combine with wall-mounted vanity units. The wall-hung toilet and bidet design maintains the design link to the washbasins. The fully shrouded models feature an integrated toilet seat with a softclose mechanism and also Sanitec’s unique Rimfree® design ensuring ease of cleaning and optimum hygiene.
a key design element of Xeno² minimalist styling. There is a choice of three finishes in high gloss white, matt grey and Scultura grey woodgrain. The handle-less design uses push-to-open drawers that have flexible integrated storage for personal organisation, anti-slip mats and integral LED lighting. Slimline illuminated mirrors also form part of the launch. These are available in five sizes to complement all washbasins and hand rinse basins. They include an integral light switch and are fitted with T5 cool white lights and IP44 safety glass. Completing the new product line-up is the Mattis bath, which is the first freestanding bath in the Keramag Design portfolio. It will complement all of the five design collections, giving designers an extended choice in back to wall, built in and freestanding options. A newly updated brochure is available on the Keramag Design portfolio, together with display opportunities for independent bathroom retailers. The project is based on two principles: structuring relationship between solids and voids and characterization of the main fronts (east and west). The SOLID and THE VOIDS: the buildings they create and draw the edges of the area in relation to the immediate green. The urban park, and ‘organized in three thematic areas, a wooded park, a playground and water park. The three essences and treatment of green, lawns and trees. The driveways paths will be the most perimetric possible to give the maximum continuity of the public park and the pedestrian space. CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MAIN FRONTS: the work on the front lines consists on build a precise way of relating to the immediate context and to give intervention. The strong characterization of elevations contributes to the construction of an inhabited landscape of relationship between internal and external to the housing. The west front is presented as closed and monolithic, traversable for points and characterized by a horizontal scan intended as a reinterpretation of the theme of urban screen (base, veil, crown). Elevated respect the street level, provides the necessary privacy to residences in On the inside, toward the park, its more evident the vertical scan and breakdown of façades and volumes that return the size of most domestic and intimate dwelling. On the ground, the relationship with the park is mediated accommodations.

From the start, a sinuous, lightweight, non-intrusive steel structure was conceptualized, supporting a slatted timber deck, snaking its way into, through and over the ever-changing ribs and a spine, in galvanized steel, painted to attract moss and growth, supported on slender steel columns The objective was to lightly inhabit the canopy, in a discreet, almost invisible slender and widens only at two places, is wheelchair friendly taking advantage of the sloping ground and starts and ends within the arboretum, so there is almost no visual impact from the lawns mechanical or electrical aspects to the walk and the gentle gradients easily raise visitors to over 12 metres above

is 130 meters, there are educational boards along the walk,(access is from either end). We commissioned a comprehensive survey of the site, every major tree, every path, all the levels, all the heights. Even before the survey, the concept of a curving structure took form, the paths, the trees and the leaves all suggested that. Working closely with young graduate Bisset and under the watchful eye of the nexus of the existing paths and around certain key trees. Key to the development of the design, was how the structure was to be inserted into a sensitive site, without major damage and disruption to the forest. Each bridge component was separated into 3 portions, each 6 metres long (two were laser cut and pre-fabricated and galvanized before being delivered to the working area of the garden for a double These portions were then manhandled into the forest and erected with a small down in the process. The top coats and the timber were then added in-situ. The pre-fabricated bits a pre-ordained shape to a tolerance of 30mm. The walk was completed in May 2014 and there have been a record number of visitors to the garden since then.

The Dogtrot House Dunn & Hillam Architects The Dogtrot House is a permanent campsite. The form of this building can be traced back to the early one room cabins As the family grew another cabin would be built and connected with a common roof. During the evolution of the design for the house I was re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird, which made reference to the vernacular ‘dog trot’ houses of the american south. The name comes from when the “old dog was too hot to trot”, the covered breezeway provided the perfect escape from t!he heat of the day. We realised with some joy that this is what we had. The house represents an upgrade for the clients, who are a family of long term and committed campers. They asked us to design them a holiday house up the road from one of their favourite campsites on the south coast of NSW. Their brief was; everything they loved about camping, without the pack up at the end of every holiday; a permanent, civilised campsite. The resulting building is a low impact, compact arrangement of three discrete
Archetech - Issue 16 [Page 66]
roofs shelter the pavilions with an open bathroom s!leeved between. Separating the pavilions is the wide, open-ended “dogtrot” corridor.
Page 66.indd 1
The rooms are separate but in a strong relationship to one another and the landscape, like a family of tents at a campsite. The space made in the centre is for gathering, eating, reading and is open to the landscape and the breeze. One has no choice but to be outside when moving between rooms, in this way one is always made aware of the landscape and the weather. Architects are rarely presented with an opportunity to site their buildings with the delicacy and deep understanding of place that is evident in the Indigenous Australian camp and subsequently the vernacular structures of the early settlers. This project gave us that opportunity and the detailed design and material choices were all informed by this. Overall we were concerned with making an appropriate response to the place, the clients brief and the budget all of which were modest, simple but not straightforward. The Dogtrot house is a house that is everything you need and nothing you don’t. It is humble, poetic and without pretence.
