Dark + Zinc Fornebuporten is one of the office and residential clusters that, in the last two decades, popped up in the land of what once was Oslo’s airport. The site, at the entrance to the Fornebu peninsula, is a gateway to this blooming new district. Two volumes confine a public plaza which central element is a lowered atrium. Here a variety of retail programs is available
Archetech - Page 8
not only to the 3000 people working at Fornebuporten but also to all the commuters that will use daily the future Fornebuporten metro station. The building mass surrounding the atrium connects the two building on the basement level. This is where some of the common functions are located such as car and bike parking, changing rooms, kitchen and technical facilities.
The two identical buildings, overlooking the central atrium from opposite sides, are composed by five volumes with the same width but different heights sitting on a glazed base. This gives the impression that the building is floating over the plaza due to contrast of the base’s lightness with the bulkiness of the office volumes. These volumes cantilever outwards, alternately towards East or West, optimizing this way the daylight intake. Maximizing the daylight areas enables to increase the density of the building. Each floor is planned to host between 250 to 300 permanent working spaces. Drawing visual references from the offshore industry, the 20 meter cantilevers rest on a central core resembling an oil rig. This resemblance symbolically points out the ambition behind the project: Fornebuporten should be a magnet for knowledge-based enterprises and oil and offshore intelligence.

As architects from around the country discovered at the American Institute of Architects’ 2016 Convention in Philadelphia, a composites revolution may be coming sooner rather than later. During AIA 2016, students from UCLA, Temple University, and Georgia Tech displayed innovative composite designs as a part of the American Composites Manufacturers Association’s (ACMA) firstever Composites in Architecture Design Challenge. UCLA won the challenge with their composite fabrication of “mega-panels,” using robotic technology to fabricate panels without a mold. The second place entry in the challenge, from Temple, drew inspiration from Menges’ recently-unveiled Elytra Filament Pavilion at London’s famous Victoria and Albert Museum. Georgia Tech’s third place entry explored waste-less fabrication with its composite “balloon panels.” If you were not able to attend AIA, you will have the opportunity to see these designs at CAMX at the ACE Pavilion! CAMX – 26-29 September 2016 in Anaheim, California – is your opportunity to pick the brains of many experts in architectural composites. Kuma’s other iconic designs.
Located amongst downtown’s most vibrant streets, Kuma’s design will see a building that complements the evolution of the community. With a curved silhouette, the tower’s two carved semi-inclusions will create the appearance of spatial balance. The tower’s 181 residential units will be primarily located in the semi-inclusions and boast substantially sized patio spaces designed as open gardens to create personal urban spaces. The mixed-use development also includes a retail space and restaurant. “I have always wanted to have a project in Canada because of its closeness to nature,” said Kuma. “Typologically, this is a large-scale project in North America, a dream for any foreign architect. We have done towers, but not to this scale and level of detail.” “He is the architect without frontiers,” said Ian Gillespie, Founder & President, Westbank. Architect Speaker Series On April 12th, 1,400 people gathered at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Chan Centre for Small to Large, an Evening with Kengo Kuma. Kuma took the audience on his journey from Small to Large, first exploring the small, soulful scale of his early projects transitioning to his larger global projects that still retain the intimate detail of layering and connectivity to location. That includes the Tokyo National Stadium recently awarded to his firm and Alberni by Kuma, the proposed 43-storey residential tower in Vancouver, by Westbank and Peterson. Westbank initiated the architect speaker series, in partnership with UBC - SALA (School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture), to provide an opportunity to discover more about the local projects that are global influencers and spark conversations on how to innovate and shape the future of our cities. It began with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, followed by Bjarke Ingles, who has designed Westbank’s Vancouver House and most recently, Kengo Kuma. www.westbankcorp.com Photo Credit: KKAA, Ed White

The Chalon family founded the kitchen company we know today as an antique restoration business in 1978. In 1981, the business was moved to its current site at the Old Hambridge Mill, at Hambridge, in the midst of the Somerset Levels (in South West England). Michael and Rose Chalon began producing furniture designed to emulate the classic elegance of 18th and 19th Century English furniture.

Connect with SketchUp 2016
In SketchUp 2016, a context click on a component gives you the opportunity to reload (or swap out) a new component directly from 3D Warehouse. This action will reload every instance of that component in your model (similar to the same action in the Components Browser),
so it’s a helpful method for working with proxy models. And if your component was downloaded from 3D Warehouse, you can also use the context-click to quickly access its 3DWH details page. With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync. When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’ Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files. We’re proud to announce our first step towards an extension ecosystem for LayOut. Using this new API, developers can now create and customize .layout files from SketchUp models. Practically, this means that
other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more. Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. This improvement is actually an entire set of smart tweaks we’ve made to inferencing and locking. You can download SketchUp Pro 2016 for free on a 30 day trial. After this time, the software will revert to SketchUp Make. Elmtec is the distribution partner for SketchUp in the UK. Contact us for more information on 01844 263750 or visit www.elmtec.co.uk/ sketchup.

With the latest release of SketchUp 2016 we’re integrating Trimble Connect directly into SketchUp. As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files. With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer. The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. As you’re modelling you can even pull in and update reference SketchUp models as if they were locally hosted components. Learn more about Trimble Connect...

Superior strength, lasting beauty As well as improved strength and stiffness, other benefits of SentryGlas® include: • Safety: In the event of breakage, glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, reducing the chance for injury • Security: SentryGlas® can be used in glazing that withstands bullets, hurricane-force winds and even bomb blasts • Durability: SentryGlas® is extremely durable and resistant to clouding, even after years of exposure • Design Versatility: SentryGlas® can be used in glass manufactured flat or curved, including annealed, toughened, heat-strengthened, spandrel, wired, patterned and colour tinted glass • UV control: SentryGlas® is available with or without UV transmittance
The SentryGlas® interlayer is five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than conventional laminating materials. With this kind of strength the glass can be a more active structural element in the building envelope, opening up design possibilities that didn’t exist before. Besides its strength, SentryGlas® ionoplast interlayer retains its clarity – even after years of service. Unlike other interlayers, SentryGlas® ionoplast interlayer is much less vulnerable to moisture exposure or yellowing over time.
Limitless possibilities Some of the many SentryGlas ® interlayer applications include: Minimally supported and open-edged railings, facades and canopies Structural glass flooring, stairs, walkways and pedestrian bridges Hurricane resistant windows, doors and skylights Bomb blast resistant windows, doors and facades SentryGlas®® is a registered trademark of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company or its affiliates for its brand of interlayers. It is used under exclusive license by Kuraray and its sub-licensees. For more information please visit www.sentryglas.com.

Gentle Genius / GG-Loop “The design process for my family’s house started following an intuition, that developed over time taking the form we can see now. During the evolution of the project a transformation, like the renewal of the king, has occurred in me. One of the major catalysts has been the album “In the Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson, inhabiting my sub

consciousness unravelling itself through catharsis in this project. At the beginning I imagined to restore the building giving it a coherent fortress-like look again. Whilst the tower took shape in my imagination, a castle emerged in which the King had trapped himself, overwhelmed by his fears, his dark side, prone to decay and death, the Nigredo. The court where tension, resignation and sacrifice evolved into hope, rebirth, the project itself.”

Those looking for a smooth and alive rustic floor need to look no further than the Bohemian range. The combination of ESCO’s special rustic wood style and Osmo’s smooth finish makes it one of the most popular flooring choices in the range. Available in eight colour options, including Cognac, Natural white to Stone Grey, this stylish flooring will suit any interior scheme. Osmo’s Polyx®-Oil enhances the floor’s performance with a durable finish that is created with natural, environmentally friendly ingredients. Based on rapidly renewable, natural vegetable oils, Osmo’s
Polyx®-Oil penetrates deeply into the wood, keeping it elastic and healthy, whilst preventing it from drying and becoming brittle. For a more specific look, customers can create their own Bohemian flooring exact to their requirements. After selecting a colour, customers can choose the type, width, thickness and length of the flooring. This includes a choice from solid wood flooring, two-layer parquet or three-layer parquet. For a more personalised touch, the wood can be finished with a range of signature features including an Osmo silver shine, extra old finish, fire-rating or handscrapped bevel. Panasonic VRF Selected for High Profile Soapworks Development When looking for an air conditioning system for the low carbon regeneration of the vast Soapworks building in Manchester, the developers selected a Panasonic VRF system. Its structure and vaulted ceiling meant that distributors, The Intelligent Comfort Group, needed to install the air conditioning system under floor. The Panasonic 3-Pipe ECOi MF2 Series provided the ideal solution thanks to its adaptable design, energy saving attributes and simultaneous heating and cooling capabilities.
This Panasonic system guarantees consistent leavingair control of 16 degrees, 4 or more degrees higher than other manufacturers and the ideal temperature for warm air to rise and effectively distribute. This system provides a consistent, comfortable environment, without the need for additional energy being used. AEROPAC from SIEGENIA - removing the barriers to residential ventilation
Archetech - Page 52
As thermal insulation and air-tightness improve thanks to housing projects which focus on driving up energy efficiency, the need for effective ventilation solutions has never been greater. This is especially the case when you consider how many of Britain’s homes are located in noisy urban areas where windows often remain closed in a bid to cut down noise pollution. With current legislation, controlled ventilation ordinarily means extract fans in bathrooms and kitchens and trickle vents on windows. However this is insufficient given the high standard of air tightness in modern homes. Centralised ventilation systems are technically excellent, but deploying these on a wide scale would prove much more of a challenge. Smart thinking holds the key SIEGENIA’s AEROPAC wall-mounted ventilator offers a convenient, costeffective alternative. The easy-to-fit, stand-alone ventilation units can be
installed in as little as 45 minutes with just an 80mm hole through the wall and an electrical connection. This simple installation process makes the unit suitable both for new build and retrofit markets. The AEROPAC offers multiple benefits for end users: most notably, improving air quality on a 24-hour constant timer thus eliminates the security risk of leaving windows open and maintains a quiet environment. It does this by incorporating a clever sound insulation barrier to offer an ‘acoustic vent’, making this an attractive proposition for properties set in noisy environments, such as near flight paths or train lines. Moreover, its sound absorption and low inherent noise (LPA = 24 dB (A)) mean it is suitable for use in bedrooms and can be kept on overnight without disturbing the user’s sleep. The air throughput of the AEROPAC can be conveniently set at different levels via the LCD display on the front. There is no compromise on energy efficiency
either, with the units using just 5W at 60 m3/h. Allergy sufferers also benefit as the AEROPAC’s filter can be upgraded to a 99% pollen-free filter for greater comfort during high pollen months. Finally, there are no major maintenance headaches further down the line as these stand-alone units require no ducting nor any of the costly cleaning associated with this. The only maintenance required is a change of filter when the unit’s LCD display indicates to do so. The front panel of the ventilator can be opened by hand and the use of filter cassettes means that the filter can be changed quickly and conveniently without any tools. The great thing for UK specifiers is that, whilst these ventilation units may be relatively new to the UK, they have already proved themselves in more than 100,000 installations across Europe. That means risk-free specification. To find out more visit www.siegenia.com.

New heat pump product line-up from Hitachi Completely redesigned to meet the needs of specifiers, installers and homeowners, Hitachi’s expanded Yutaki air source heat pump product range is one of the widest on the market. Utilising common components, common outdoor units and simplified design to benefit both end users and installers, the extended line-up includes a total of 70 new models which are more compact for small installation spaces and are lighter weight for easier handling. The introduction of common components and controllers, streamlines product training requirements, reduces the need for carrying multiple spares, and lowers installation and maintenance time. Performances have also been improved, with higher COPs, better seasonal efficiencies and higher capacities.
Archetech - Page 54
Yutaki-S has three new 4.3kW, 6.0kW and 7.5kW indoor units with dimensions of 600 x 792 x 300mm to fit a standard kitchen cupboard space. Efficiency has also been improved with COPs up to 5.25 and with an Energy Class Rating up to A+++. Yutaki-S is suitable for the heating and domestic hot water requirements of small to large properties, and is ideal for both new build and renovation projects. The new all-in-one Yutaki-SCombi integrated solution has been designed specifically for the UK market. The indoor unit has a built-in 200 or 260L stainless steel hot water cylinder, as well as the main hydraulic components such as the pump, filter and back up heater, plus a newly-designed controller. The indoor unit is pre-plumbed and prewired, making the installation simpler with less internal space needed. High temperature Yutaki-S80, which generates domestic hot water at up to 80oC, has been completely redesigned with easier connections at the top of the indoor unit for simpler installation. Utilising Hitachi’s unique ‘smart cascade’
design, the Yutaki-S80 can be used as a replacement for inefficient boilers without changing radiator sizes or any existing hot water tank. The all-new compact monobloc Yutaki-M requires no refrigeration pipework or internal unit. With a new controller, reduced noise levels, greater outputs up to 16kW and improved efficiencies, with COPs up to 5.0 and an Energy Class Rating of up to A++, Yutaki-M has been completely redesigned to meet the needs of the UK market. All Yutaki models can now be supplied with a new Cooling Kit accessory to enable both heating and cooling modes. A new multi-function wired remote control is common to all Yutaki models – meaning a single menu for all Yutaki products with a dedicated installer view, wizard start up configuration and a more intuitive menu for quick and simple commissioning. The alarm history is also logged to assist engineers with troubleshooting. Talking about the benefits for end users, Andy Hooper, UK Heating Manager, Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions said, “Yutaki has some of the best seasonal performance (SCOP) figures on the market, many models are A+++ efficient and the new wired and wireless thermostats are simple to use with weekly timers, holiday modes and a favourite button, so it’s a great product range for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills as well as their impact on climate change.” All Hitachi’s Yutaki air source heat pumps are MCS approved, eligible for the domestic and non-domestic RHI and have domestic hot water (DHW) Legionella Protection and a five-year warranty as standard.
Hitachi Air Conditioning Engineered for tomorrow.
Saving you time and money, naturally

This renewable energy device is highly efficient with an ErP rating of A++. The product is MCS approved allowing access to the Renewable Heat Incentive which will pay on average £700 per year for 7 years. The indoor unit comes pre-plumbed and pre-wired and all major components are factory fitted, saving time, space and money, naturally.

The recycling of construction materials
The proposal for the breakfast nook was an enclosure of grey blockwork - a stark contrast with the colorful mural. The table design uses a steel base with a tabletop made from planks recycled from construction props. The kitchen and bathrooms have been fitted with proprietary products: Veracruz marble, Thasos stone, Byzantine glass and granite and polyester finishes. The lighting designs utilized Quasar luminaries (from Prisma).

BOXING CLEVER WITH SECURIKEY’S SAFETY KNIFE & RETRACTOR
AluK systems help future proof Welsh school
RIBA approved CPD ‘STEP ON IT!’ stairway safety
The Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme aims to deliver effective learning environments and to develop best practice in school design. The scheme’s main target is to create a sustainable construction system of education buildings in Wales that meets national building standards and reduces the recurrent costs and carbon footprint.
This CPD looks at the guidelines for the specification of a safe stairway. The presentation and discussion deals with the subject of how to make commercial stairways safe and meet with all current building regulation guidelines.
Knife safety is thrown into sharp relief with the retractable safety knife, cord and karabiner from leading physical security product supplier, Securikey. Ideal for warehouse and distribution centre use, the 90cm cord and karabiner fixing allows for hands-free work whilst still keeping the knife within easy reach, making it one of the most reliable and convenient safety tools on the market.
Archetech - Page 78

With an ergonomic comfort handle, blunt safety tip to prevent puncture wounds and a tool-free blade change, Securikey’s safety knife is a cut above the rest for practicality, reliability and peace of mind. A range of accessories and spares, including blades, are also available on Securikey’s website. W: www.hse.gov.uk

AluK systems were specified for Block 21 of the development which incorporates the school’s new Design and Technology building, designed by Lawray Architects. The team of architects were looking for a slender selection of profiles that would complement the expanse of brickwork in the new building.
The CPD presentation includes: • What stair nosings are designed to achieve and how to select the right one • Key Legislation and Industry Standards • How recent BRE and Equality Act (Formally DDA) guidelines affect specifications • Environmental and Health and Safety considerations • Examples of best practice

Fermacell helps Scotts break the boundaries Timber frame manufacturer Scotts of Thrapston has used fermacell on a pioneering school build.
Armstrong launches an even sounder offer to acoustics
The Pure® collection
Pencil Bin gets top of the class for recycling
A premium ceiling tile which takes acoustic performance to new heights has been launched by Armstrong. The new Perla OP dB 40mm mineral tile combines the high sound absorption of Armstrong’s OP range with the high sound attenuation of its dB range for ultimate acoustic flexibility.
They specified 153 of fermacell’s 1200mm x 2400mm x 12.5mm boards for their first such project, Weldon Church of England Primary School, in their home county, and have not looked back since, also using fermacell for another school and an office building.
Its launch is designed to help specifiers particularly in the education sector to reduce the amount of sound transferred from traffic routes to learning areas and also to reduce the noise of rain on lightweight roof constructions, an issue also encountered in the office sector.

The new pencil bins from Leafield Environmental have been attracting a lot of attention in schools nationwide, encouraging children to recycle and volunteer to be ‘litter pickers’ according to Abbey Catholic Primary School. The brightly coloured pencil range have been specifically for children aged 3-8 years. Ideal for both indoors and outside, and manufactured in durable polyethylene for a long and useful life, each pencil bin has a 70 litre plastic liner inside to assist easy and clean emptying and disposal. Optional extras include: WRAP compliant recycling label, a lock, steel liner and ground fixing kit. The range is priced from £153.00. Gypsum fibre dry lining boards from Fermacell have helped a specialist timber frame manufacturer make a promising start in a new sector. Scotts of Thrapston in Northamptonshire have 95 years’ expertise in the equestrian and garden buildings sector but recently decided to try and break into the education sector by supplying modular classroom buildings.
Armstrong Ceilings has launched Perla OP dB - a tile combining two criteria of acoustic performance.
Industrial Design has stopped concealing raw construction materials, instead integrating them in the interior. This style fits perfectly with old properties such as lofts, factories and studios, as well as with new builds. The Pure® collection uses raw materials, taking its inspiration from the Bauhaus. The combination of sleek design and pure materials has a unique effect and timeless character.

Charcon Introduces Stonemaster Range Extensions
ALUMINIUM BI-FOLD AND SLIDING DOORS DIRECT TO SELFBUILDERS
New products… New potential!
Charcon, the commercial hard landscaping division of Aggregate Industries, has introduced mixed sized packs plus two additional long aspect pavers to its popular Stonemaster concrete flag and block paving range.
Time is money for self-builders. The longer a project takes, the higher the cost. AluFoldDirect, a specialist in aluminium bi-folding and sliding doors, is minimising delays by delivering fully glazed products to site within two weeks.
Vufold introduces matching windows to its Ultra and Supreme range of Bi-fold doors
The mix of sizes in the packs also meet the demand for contemporary linear designs, and to further reflect this, two additional sizes have been added to the core Stonemaster range. W: www.aggregate.com
Aluminium bi-folds and sliders are perfect for creating that dream home but installation is complicated by the fact that, until there’s a hole, accurate measurements cannot be taken. This gives self-builders two options: build the hole, measure it and wait for delivery; or guess the measurements and cross their fingers for the best. W: www.leafield-environmental.com T: 01706 260700 E: info@alufolddirect.co.uk
W: www.sightgrip.com T: 01629 636210
Vufold, the leading British manufacturing retailer of bifold doors is radically transforming its offer to customers and the building trade with the addition of matching windows to its hugely popular Ultra and Supreme range of external bi-folding doors. Manufactured in the UK to the same high standard as Vufold’s doors, our beautifully crafted windows are constructed from either full aluminium or aluminium cladding on the outside with real oak on the inside. They are available in various sizes, opening options and window shapes that will be suitable for most window needs. As with all Vufold products, the windows come complete with everything needed for installation, including fixing kit and easy to follow instructions. W: www.vufold.co.uk
Page 81 - Archetech
The new packs are available in contemporary long aspect pavers in six shades. Normally a made-to-order product, the mixed sized packs will be stocked to allow customers greater flexibility to purchase the quantity they require when working on smaller schemes.
There is an increasing popularity for the use of colour coated aggregates to create unique and individual floor coatings and designs for both internal and external. Long Rake Spar’s recently acquired SightGRIP collection provides a choice of pigmented aggregates in a selection of industry favourite colours, which can be applied to most surface substrates. Whilst initially developed for the use within Anti-Skid sectors, in particular for demarcation purposes, the scope and potential for these products to be utilised within architectural design is huge. They are able to coat most aggregates to fit with individual requirements and all products are produced specifically to order from their head offices in Derbyshire.

neaco’s patented aluminium open grilles have attracted widespread demand as a more practical alternative to traditional timber decking for gardens, balconies, sun terraces and external walkways. Architects have been quick to appreciate Techdek’s advantages: the product is non-toxic, non-combustible, corrosive-free, extremely durable and easy to install without requiring hot works such as welding. A patented swage-locked construction between bars enables high structural efficiency and load-bearing capacity. neaco’s National Sales Manager, Peter Melia, comments: “We have been attracting a lot of specifications from projects which require low-maintenance decking and terraces – Techdek is virtually maintenance-free, which gives it a clear advantage over wood” W: www.neaco.co.uk E: sales@neaco.co.uk

When modular timber construction specialists Carbon Dynamic were asked to supply garden units for a four-star spa hotel there was only one wall and ceiling finish they were prepared to use - fermacell. The square-edged gypsum fibreboard panels have been used to line 13 modular 26m2 garden lodges, including one accessible unit, and each comprising a king-size bed, en-suite and indoor and outdoor seating areas, as well as a plant room module at the luxury Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness.
