latest industry news BEN DERBYSHIRE ELECTED NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE RIBA

B

en Derbyshire has been elected the next President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He will take over the two-year presidential term from Jane Duncan on 1 September 2017; from 1 September 2016 he will officially become RIBA President-Elect. The position of RIBA President was established in 1835 and has been previously held by significant architects including Sir George Gilbert Scott, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, Alfred Waterhouse and Sir Basil Spence. Ben Derbyshire is chair of HTA Design LLP, a 150 strong multidisciplinary practice based mainly in London and Edinburgh, where he has been a partner since 1987. He has a number of other Board positions including at RIBA Enterprises, Design for Homes, and is a trustee of The London Society. Ben Derbyshire said: “Once again we find ourselves in turbulent times. In winning this election I am conscious of a great sense of responsibility owed to architects everywhere, in all corners of the UK and overseas. Jane Duncan has laid the foundations for change at the RIBA that I look forward to driving forward, when I take up the role of President. My primary goal is to champion architects so that they, our sister professions and clients, can advance architecture as the cornerstone of the well-designed and more sustainable built environment society desperately needs. All architects, wherever and however we practice, need an RIBA that works for us.”

Archetech - Page 6

RIBA President Jane Duncan said: “Congratulations to Ben Derbyshire on his successful election and to Alan Jones and Andrew Salter for putting themselves forward for this fantastic role. During the next year of my Presidency, I will be playing my part in implementing the RIBA’s new five-year strategy which distilled the collective views of our membership. I look forward to passing this important baton on to Ben Derbyshire and ensuring that our profession has a strong voice and all our members, wherever they are, have the skills and support they need to thrive.”

WE LIVE IN THE OFFICE – A COMMISSION BY GILES ROUND THE ARCHITECTURE GALLERY, RIBA / 22 SEPTEMBER 2016 – 5 FEBRUARY 2017

T

his autumn the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) presents a new commission by multi-disciplinary artist Giles Round. Round was invited to explore the RIBA Collections, and through extensive research has created an exhibition for the Architecture Gallery that focuses our attention on one of the most familiar and unavoidable architectural features of the city: the façade. Inspired by the work of a widerange of architects represented in the RIBA’s world-class architectural collections, Round explores the increasing tension between the static exterior and changing interior of the architecture around us. He highlights the aesthetic qualities of facades in their original conception, and the subsequent contemporary use and reuse of these buildings. Round also explores the ways in which we currently ‘collect’ and preserve facades, creating an archive of buildings in real space and time. Original works of iconic façades by Berthold Lubetkin, Venturi Scott Brown and Jane Drew feature in the exhibition alongside representation and re-appropriation of façades from other architectural periods with unique graphic qualities – from Greek Revival and Art Nouveau, to Modern and postmodern architecture. A key component of the exhibition is the transformation of the gallery to a production studio. Here, façades from a ‘stylebook’ compiled from

RIBA’s Collections are applied to architectural sculptures that mimic the structure of buildings. Over the course of the exhibition period these will form an installation recognisable to visitors as an assembly of façades - a new city scape. The sculptures will be on sale in the gallery during the exhibition period. Giles Round: “Central to the exhibition, an idea reflected in the title, is the reappropriation and repurposing of buildings that no longer fulfil the functional requirements for which they were designed. Working with the RIBA Collections, I focused on particular facades that I found interesting either graphically or due to their backstory. Throughout the exhibition the graphic quality of the selected facades are appropriated, stylistically altered, into new forms and different media.” Marie Bak Mortensen, Head of Exhibitions: “This is the second year running of RIBA’s artist-architect commission in which we invite creative practitioners with an interest in architecture to create an exhibition for the Architecture Gallery. A key aim of the commission is to introduce new ways of engaging the public with architecture and RIBA’s Collections, recognised as one of the most important architectural resources containing drawings, models, photographs and archival material from the Renaissance to the present day. By inviting an artist to work with us, we hope to show the contemporary relevance of the collections to creativity and >>

>> artistic and architectural endeavours. The

Giles Round commission will follow this line of enquiry and bring new unexpected, rigorous and provocative interpretation of architecture material to our audiences.” GILES ROUND Giles works between art, architecture and design. Previous projects and exhibitions of his have bridged graphics, design, art, architecture, interiors, and set design. He has created immersive installations in a multitude of settings from the home to galleries and outdoor spaces. The works range from small objects to large-scale

sculpture, wallpapers and installation. A firm believer that design and architecture play an active role in well-being, Giles’ work uses these tactics to create immersive and thought-provoking viewer experiences. Press view – the press view for the installation will take place at 9.30am at RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London on Wednesday 21 September at 9.30am. RSVP tobeatrice.cooke@riba.org

Petersen, Artists & Programmes Curator at Wysing Arts Centre The exhibition is sponsored by Wedge Group Galvanising and is supported byCockayne – Grants for the Arts and The London Community Foundation. The RIBA has worked closely with Wysing Arts Centre in the collaboration with Giles Round.

The commission is curated by Corinne Mynatt, Curatorial Programmes Coordinator at RIBA with Colin Sterling, Project Curator at RIBA and Lotte Juul

JOINT STATEMENT ON BREXIT FROM THE ARCHITECTS OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND

T

he Presidents and Directors of the five professional bodies representing architects on the islands of Britain and Ireland met in Belfast earlier this week to discuss the implications of the UK referendum to leave the European Union and have released the following joint statement. This joint statement is made on behalf of: •

Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS)

The Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI)

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)

Royal Society of Architects in Wales (RSAW)

Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA)

RIBA President Jane Duncan said: “UK architecture is a resilient, flexible and innovative profession with a long and proud history. I’m confident that architects, along with our partners in the wider creative and construction industries can help deliver strong economic growth for the UK during and after Brexit. As we look outwards to the world, we will continue our work with the UK government to address the challenges and support the opportunities that arise from Brexit, including pressing for continued free movement so vital for architects' practices in the UK and the EU, and mutual recognition of qualifications.” Paul Crowe, President of RSUA “Unlike in other parts of the UK, the level of investment in Northern Ireland’s built environment was still significantly below pre-recession levels even before Brexit. The modest recovery we were experiencing is now in jeopardy. There are concerns that Brexit might hit Northern Ireland harder than elsewhere in the UK and we believe there is an onus on the UK Government to take account of this as it rolls out measures to mitigate the impact of Brexit. Looking ahead it is essential that some way is found to maintain free movement and free trade across the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.” Robert Firth, President of RSAW “The Royal Society of Architects in Wales fully supports the Welsh Government in its demands that Wales should not lose out on projects and funding that would previously have resulted from our position as a region of the EU.

Architects want to play a key part in creating better places for everyone - and to engage with the Welsh Government to achieve its aims of a sustainable, vibrant country through the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act. Wales is a small nation with an international outlook so our cultural and economic connection with Europe will be vital for students and practitioners of architecture in the future.” Carole Pollard, President of RIAI "The Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland is the representative body for architects throughout the island of Ireland. There have always been strong connections between the architectural profession in Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. That connection has been built on a long tradition of movement of the profession between both jurisdictions and the cyclical nature of the construction industry has ensured a constant flow of architects throughout these islands. Free movement of people and services, particularly via the open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, is essential for a healthy and sustainable construction sector." Willie Watt, President of RIAS "Our Festival of Architecture, celebrating the RIAS' centenary this year, has reaffirmed that Scottish architecture has been greatly enriched by our close trading and cultural relationships with the UK and Europe. We join with our colleagues from throughout the UK and in the Republic of Ireland in seeking to retain and strengthen those ties."

Page 7 - Archetech

“The uncertainty caused by the result of the EU referendum in the UK could have a major impact on the construction industry across these islands and we know that some building projects have been put on hold. Restoring stability and confidence as a matter of urgency will enable us to maximise the opportunities presented by the UK’s new relationship with the EU and the rest of the world. It is our view that the free movement of people, goods and services throughout Europe is of paramount importance to the economic, social and environmental well-being of these islands. We call on the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as it negotiates the UK’s exit from the European Union, to protect free movement.”

Hybrid Design This project houses a growing graphic/product design office within an existing brick building located in the Jackson square historic district. The design required the removal of the existing interior structure while leaving the existing perimeter brick structure and the original part of the front facade intact. The new design is comprised of adding a second story structure above the original floor that opens out to a roof deck injecting elements of the outdoors into the core of the office and inserting a steel ribbon surround at the front facade to create a large bay window and entry shroud, forming a looking glass with the work place and the eventful street life. The original building was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. Set in the heart of the city’s red-light district a new brick structure was quickly erected to house a new bar/saloon.

Terry.Terry Architecture

At a more recent date the building facade was altered and for many years housed a cafe and office space. The partitions and interior walls were peeled back to reveal the existing perimeter brick walls and serve as a backdrop for the main office area. The new addition above straddles the existing structure and provides an informal conference area that is adjacent to the kitchen and outdoor deck space for informal gatherings echoing a bit of the past. A series of steel moment frames are used for the primary structure throughout the building to seismically brace the existing brick walls and to collect the additional loads of the new second story. The roof plane and roof deck have been peeled back slightly from the perimeter walls to create skylight openings which allow natural light to spill into the core of the building.

The main office space, and conference areas are located on the first floor, additional office space and archive/exhibit space on the second floor. Most of the existing structure was retained and renovated rather than demolished. The original masonry walls at the lower floor provides thermal mass and absorbs heat energy during the day, keeping the interior comfortable, and helping to maintain a moderate, baseline temperature for the cooler evenings. Since the structure is located in a relatively dense urban area, the masonry walls also add protection against fire. The new addition is designed with deep overhangs on the south side to maximize the benefits of indirect natural lighting and reduce the need for electric lighting. 2014 AIA San Francisco Design Awards - Interior Architecture Citation Award

House 19 Archetech - Page 12

Jestico + Whiles

Located at the end of a lane that runs north from the High Street in the conservation area of Old Amersham, House 19 fuses traditional forms and local materials in an elegant and modern way to make full use of the natural aspect and orientation of the site. House 19 is an exemplar of harmonious and sustainable contemporary design in the context of an ancient historic town. The development of a simple plan and section delivered a house of exceptional

quality whilst at the same time bringing together the most comprehensive range of passive and active energy-saving features in a well-considered, thoughtful assembly of light-filled spaces, suited to 21st century living.

Windows are carefully positioned to frame views to the Old Town and provide more expansive views to the south. The result is a tranquil and calm internal atmosphere that changes throughout the day and the seasons of the year.

The house captures stunning and longranging views over the surrounding Chiltern Hills from all the upper rooms and circulation spaces and modulates daylight and sunlight in the internal areas to dramatic effect.

In terms of materials the house is firmly rooted in the history of the area through the use of delicately dark stained vertical board cedar cladding, snapped-andknapped luminescent flint (used for cladding and to create external walls), dark zinc roofing and accents of carefully placed corten steel.

As a result, the building adopts a commanding yet respectful presence in the context of the lane and also makes a contribution to the wider community with the inclusion of a clock on the rendered chimney, to the benefit of both players and public using the adjoining cricket ground and open The Architect's expertise in, and passion for sustainable design is evident in a combination of practical, robust, simple and deliverable design features that form the bedrock of the design approach.

These begin with passive measures and a building form that orientates the long axis of the house in an eastwest direction, thereby enabling both beneficial heat gain in winter and the exclusion of solar radiation in summer, through the judicious use of a cantilevered roof overhang above the ground floor, south-facing glass facade. A dramatic double-height space at the heart of the plan, coupled with opening vents in the long upper level dormer window, provides opportunity for passive stack natural cooling in summer months.

Furthermore, PV panels contribute to energy generation and the whole house is heated through a ground source heat pump, which provides underfloor heating and hot water. Other environmental features include airtight thermally heavyweight construction and triple- glazed windows (in excess of current building regulation u-values) and an earth tube ventilation system that ensures running costs are minimised and internal conditions are as comfortable as can be.

Rainwater is harvested for toilet flushing, clothes washing and garden watering and appliances have been selected for the highest rated energy-efficiency available. A wild meadow garden and living roof to the single storey garden room enhance the strong ecological value of the site. House 19 is a fusion of architectural moves, contemporary vernacular and pragmatic sustainability features and represents a benchmark for new houses in historic locations.

First house in Scotland fitted with groundbreaking “Heating with Ice” Technology Stommel Haus, premium manufacturer of offsite manufactured homes in Germany, equips a private dwelling in Aberdeenshire with ground breaking “Heating with Ice” technology by Viessmann.

Archetech - Page 18

The innovative ice store system is installed in a very energy efficient eco timber house from Stommel Haus becoming the first of its kind in Scotland. This ground breaking technology recovers energy from only renewable sources, such as the sun, the ambient heat and the soil, to heat and cool a building and provides hot water for the house. Drawing energy from ice to heat or cool a house sounds a little bit like science fiction, but over the past 4 years Stommel Haus already installed many such systems in their eco houses in Germany. The ice storage system which consists of an underground water tank, solar thermal panels and a state of the art heat pump supplies energy to the heat pump which generates the hot water and the heat for the under-floor heating on all storeys of the house. It also cools the house in summer! The heat pump extracts energy from the water stored in the ice storage tank which is installed under ground. The energy

used to provide the heat slowly turns the water in the underground tank to ice. Additional energy is obtained from the freezing process of the water - therefore the term “ice store”. Freezing is an exothermic process, i.e. as liquid water changes to solid ice, crystallisation energy (latent heat) is released. This latent heat is retained in the ice store system. A heat source management system integrated in the heat pump draws

energy from either the ice store or solar thermal panels on the roof. The ice store also draws energy from the surrounding ground to regenerate heat. In summer the ice store can be used to provide natural cooling: At the end of the heating season, the water in the store is turned to ice. The ambient summer heat around the store, the solar thermal energy and heat which is drawn from the system via an extraction heat exchanger melt the ice in the ice store and cools the heating circuit of the house.

Laser Experts Bring Unique Art To Life Laser cutting and engraving specialist Cutting Technologies has teamed up with renowned artist, Tom Hiscocks to produce several intricate laser-cut sculptures. Tom recently created two console tables with male and female torso sculptures using cor-ten before being copper plated. The commission came following the Harrogate International Visual Arts Fair in November which featured a series of Tom’s figurative sculptures made in either metal or acrylic – each having been laser-cut by Cutting Technologies.

Working alongside Nunnington-based gallery, Bils and Rye, who represented Tom’s work at the fair, Tom’s work featured Chinese Whisper, a female torso incorporating 28 layers of metal which had been laser cut by Cutting Technologies.

Archetech - Page 20

Jane Robinson, director and co-founder of Cutting Technologies commented: “Creative projects like this are superb at displaying what our team can really achieve. Introducing AlignMatic™ Designers put a lot of effort and skill into designing a façade. You can imagine how frustrating it is when the beautiful symmetry and lines of your new façade are defaced by untidy roller blinds, all stopped at different places. Decor Systems have created the solution… AlignMatic™ is a truly unique manual roller blind system with a patent pending brake device which ensures that blinds always stop in the same position. Ideal for prestige locations where symmetry and neat alignment are key. The stop positions are tailored to each installation, so you can align them with horizontal façade elements such as transoms. The blind features a precision balance mechanism for light and easy operation, even on the

largest blinds. What’s more, it’s purely mechanical so it doesn’t require any cables, motors or batteries. Another feature is the one-touch operation. The blinds are configured to default open or default closed. A gentle pull of the stainless steel bead chain releases the brake and the blind glides to its default position. Each blind is manufactured in the UK by Decor Systems, and available in a vast range of beautiful fabrics from organic basket weaves to high-tech metallised screen fabrics. Artistic Vision Brought To Life With Perforated Sheets

Expressive wall decorations made with perforated metal panels from RMIG combine functionality and aesthetics at an indoor swimming facility. To increase the functionality of the swimming facilities in Hundvåg, it was decided to give the interior an artistic dimension that would counterbalance the hard surfaces and improve the acoustics by reducing noise levels. Artists Marius Dahl and Jan Christensen won the competition for this assignment with a beautiful project, inspired by water and waves. Dahl and Christensen suggested a sophisticated wave pattern to reflect the use of the facilities. RMIG worked closely with the artists and Stålteknikk AS to find the perfect solution for this project. To bring the artists’ vision to life, tailor-made perforated panels and cassettes from the RMIG City Emotion programme were used on the walls, creating a striking 3-D effect. Functional aesthetics All panels for the Hundvåg project were manufactured from 5754 aluminium, perforated with round holes and finished with a special surface treatment for maximum corrosion protection. Sound absorbing batts have been placed behind the panels to ensure maximum noise reduction. Furthermore, the perforated cassettes have been delivered as complete units, ready for installation, saving valuable time for everyone involved in this prestigious project. It is functionality and aesthetics on a new level. RMIG is the world’s largest manufacturer and supplier of perforated metal. In addition to exterior cladding, the company also supplies products for a large number of construction applications such as car park and security screening, acoustic wall linings, ceilings, lighting, street furniture, balustrades and walkways.

London’s Iconic Lighthouse Building - From mysterious past to bright future Neighbouring Kings Cross, sits the iconic Grade II Listed Flat-Iron Lighthouse building which has been transformed into office and retail space with the assistance of Selectaglaze. Constructed somewhere between 1875 – 1884 it has been neglected for over 20 years. UK Real Estate took on the task of restoring the building for its new purpose as office and retail space and appointed Balfour Beatty as its main contractor. The project wasn’t without challenges, with two underground tunnels running beneath; the building’s restoration had to be carefully managed, including tackling the issues of noise and vibrations.

When there is a gap between the primary and secondary glazing of at least 100mm a noise reduction of 45dB is possible. Selectaglaze units are a reversible adaptation and are accepted by most heritage bodies. Selectaglaze will be at London Build Stand No: P21, the 26th – 27th October. For further information, please contact Selectaglaze on 01727 837271/e mail: enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk

Page 29 - Archetech

The solution to the extensive vibration issues was to isolate all internal fixtures and fittings by inserting elastomeric bearing pads at all points of contact with the external structure. Secondary glazing was an intrinsic component of this solution as a fully independent internal window system allows the full sealing of the internal envelope.

Selectaglaze is the specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing, with fifty years’ experience working on all building types. Selectaglaze recommended the use of 8mm toughened glass, glazed to Series 25 and Series 90 vertical sliders and Series 41 lift out units, designed to suit the style and sightlines of the primary window. In total Selectaglaze installed 83 units.

Urban living gets personal: Allied London reveal St. John’s residential villages designed by Geraghty Taylor Architects Award-winning creative property developers, Allied London have today revealed the details of their first, two residential communities within their St. John’s neighbourhood. South Village and St. John’s Place Tower, also known as ‘Village and Sky’ represent two unique and design-led residential offerings unified by a shared vision to create a village-inspired community within Manchester’s thriving city centre. Influenced by the desire to integrate high-quality design with the evolving requirements of urban societies, living at St. John’s will offer something not yet available within the city: considered homes that prioritise the material design as much as the immaterial ‘experience’ of a place. Michael Ingall, Chief Executive, Allied London commented: “St. John’s will be Manchester’s first residential neighbourhood, and a new Manchester experience. We want to create a lifestyle

where living means more than just bricks and mortar, and we want to do it well. Geraghty Taylor Architects were briefed to create contemporary warehouse living for South Village based on classic industrial heritage. St. John’s Place Tower has a different feel; that of classic, modern architecture and design, reminiscent of the first towers in Chicago and New York.” Geraghty Taylor Architects were commissioned to create the interior design brand for these inspiring projects, whilst Simpson Haugh and Partners designed the St. John’s masterplan, including South Village and St. John’s Place. Brendan Geraghty, director and co-founder of the London based Geraghty Taylor Architects, explained: “We work from the premise of Brand before Building. That means we want to fully understand our client’s brand and create or develop the story behind any project we approach. Architecture is not just about bricks and

mortar; it is about facilitating communities, lives and neighbourhoods and creating the brand and culture to support that. Working with Allied London was a pleasure, as they very much share our ethos.” David Drews, St. John’s Head of Design, added: “We have created for South Village and St. John’s Place Tower, two individual personalities. South Village is about craft and honesty. Expect polished concrete floors, oversized terraces and exposed brick. The Tower is inspired by mid-century classic design and features bespoke kitchens, marble finish walls and unparalleled views of Manchester. Once the former home of Granada TV, the creation of St. John’s seeks to re-establish and build on this heritage and bring it to life for a new generation of citydwellers in Manchester." Head Interior Designer Catherine Carpenter at Geraghty Taylor Architects explained her approach

to the brief: “Inspired by Manchester’s widely influential creative scene we approached the St. Johns project with an emphasis on putting people back at the heart of design. We articulated a series of design rules and brand critical elements that responded to people, such as materials that wear through human activity, leaving traces to tell a story through handcrafted and architectural elements. This then provided a very clear and robust framework through which all design and operational decisions were filtered.” Homes at South Village and St. John’s Place Tower will launch to the public in September 2016. A limited number of homes can be pre-reserved. Please contact Louise Emmott at JLL to enquire about an appointment. louise.emmott@eu.jll.com www.gtarchitects.co.uk www.stjohnsmanchester.com

CompetentRoofer Ltd Registered Roofing Contractors have been busy, registering over 40,000 roof refurbishment works across the UK, ranging from

Triton has extended its range of liquid applied waterproofing products to offer a wider choice of systems primarily for the reliable waterproofing of roofs and podium decks. Each of the three new systems provides Type A barrier protection waterproofing as defined in BS 8102 (2009). They are quick and easy to apply, very fast curing and suitable for application in cooler temperatures – therefore extending the season for application and reducing the downtime of areas treated. TWS-Poly H produces a totally seamless waterproof surface on prepared concrete and can be applied by squeegee, brush, trowel or roller. The 2-component polyurea formulation is ideal for waterproofing pitched or flat roofs, decks and balconies and other areas where a degree of flexibility is required. The trafficable, cured surface also makes it suitable for waterproofing concrete floors in car parks etc. TWSPoly H can also be applied to internal and external walls.

coatings in tunnels or canals or used to waterproof pitched or flat roofs. The cured surface allows for building movement and is trafficable and highly resistant to abrasion. Single component TWS Fastcoat cures as an elastic and seamless layer that offers excellent weather resistance and can withstand permanent water contact. A key feature is its ability to deliver a combination of root barrier and waterproofing layer, therefore reducing the number of layers required in green roof construction. Applied by brush, spreader or airless equipment, its cured surface can be lightly trafficked making it suitable for low pitch or flat roofs and balconies. Liquid applied waterproofing systems can deal with complex shapes and contours where joints or folds in other waterproofing materials might cause a weakness. Technical support on the specification and installation of all Triton’s waterproofing systems is available from Triton’s technical team. The architectural practices behind each project will battle it out in live judging sessions to be held at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin, 16-18 November. All will be hoping to be crowned winners of one of 32 categories and go on to compete for the ultimate accolades of ‘World Building of the Year’ and ‘Future Project of the Year’. Paul Finch, Programme Director of the World Architecture Festival, commented on this year’s shortlist: “This is a very exciting year for us, with a record entry and a very high overall standard. Our move to Berlin, after four successful years in Singapore, has not deterred Asian and Australasian practices from entering the awards, and we have seen big increases from Europe and North America. We look forward to meeting the shortlisted architects in Berlin in November.”

Entries will be evaluated by an international panel of judges, which this year includes Ole Scheeren, architect of The Interlace, the 2015 World Building of the Year, Louisa Hutton of Sauerbruch Hutton, Christoph Ingenhoven of Ingenhoven Architects, and David Chipperfield of David Chipperfield Architects. In addition to the awards, WAF includes a conference programme based around the Festival’s 2016 theme ‘Housing for Everyone’, which will debate the growing understanding of how demographics and global urbanisation are forcing change in the way we think about housing. With imperatives to create shelter at one end of the spectrum, and sufficiency for occupation and investment at the other, the programme will examine the significant contribution that architects can make.

“Stiftung Vivendra“ at Dielsdorf / Switzerland proves it: one can…

Preserve the past and build the future

Archetech - Page 40

Learning, living, working - these are the three words which accurately describe “Stiftung Vivendra”. The establishment was founded in 1965 by a parents’ association to support cerebrally paralyzed persons. In 1970, the Dielsdorf location with a remedial pedagogic school, a boarding school, therapies and a home for adults was opened. Since that time “Stiftung Vivendra“ takes care for cerebrally (“concerning the cerebrum“) handicapped persons of every age - from the baby in the integrative day-care facility for children to the group home for old people. Today, the organization is operating at four localities in the Zurich region. The facades of the nucleus of the foundation at Dielsdorf have been extensively renovated recently. The result is impressive because of durable and future-oriented solutions, but preserving the architectural roots at the same time. The history As mentioned, the four volumetrically subtly erected building components A to D were built in the transitional period from the 1960s to the 1970s. In the 1980s, a first rather provisional facade renovation was carried out: as a contribution to minimizing deficits in terms of energy efficiency, an 5 cm thick (or to be more precise, thin) rock wool insulation was installed and cladded with fibre-cement boards. Retrospectively, this solution must be considered as suboptimal both technically and visually (see motif top left). To change this unsatisfactory condition, the planning for a general facade renovation was started in 2013 by the renowned architecture office L3P Architekten (Regensberg near Zurich) managed by Dipl.-Ing. Arch. FH Mareike Beumer.

Following this professional planning, the facades of three of the four buildings in total were completely renovated in the time from autumn of 2015 to summer of 2016. (House D will follow at a later date not yet defined). The constructive design One peculiarity was that the loadbearing capacity of the wall - a type of steel frame construction with infill - was statically insufficient. That is why the anchoring and the load transfer of the new building shell had to be effected via the ceilings. This task was performed by means of consoles with angle brackets, which were adjustable in order to level deviating facade depths at the same time. These consoles formed the basis for an intelligent facade construction with an optimal insulation in terms of energy efficiency towards the wall and a multilayered design towards the outside: on a lathing providing a rear-ventilation space of 4 cm, the “KNAUF AQUAPANEL Cement Board Outdoor“ was screwed, and ceramic tiles were laid on these boards. This tiles supplied by the well-known architectural ceramics brand AGROB BUCHTAL were specially produced for this project in the Buchtal factory at D-92521 Schwarzenfeld The architectural effect The building ensemble at Dielsdorf is embedded in a park-like environment in which many guests and occupants enjoy relaxing or inspiring walks. Therefore, it was important to avoid a monotonous impression and to find a look instead which - corresponding to the occupants’ handicap - conveys discreet charms without being shrill. In simple words, the intention was to create a “park for

(Picture source: AGROB BUCHTAL Gmbh / A. Faragulo) Thanks to exact mitre cuts, the tile pattern is continued even “around the corner“ and creates dynamic perspectives. Great care in details also becomes apparent in the area of the window frames and the roof parapet.

the senses” with a touch of poetry. This ambitious objective is supported by the facade ceramics in several ways thanks to its three-dimensional shaping, glossy glaze and naturally changing colouring: depending on the incidence of light and the position, the building shells convey alternating effects, impressions and gentle reflections. The intended unobtrusive diversity is also underlined by the fact that the two formats of 6 x 30 cm and 10 x 30 cm are not arranged in a strictly regular order but in changing constellations, so that a discreet rhythm is created. In addition, the two colours of the facade ceramics corresponding with the environment make the buildings appear less voluminous and rather filigree. An elementary contribution to this is also made by the horizontal laying of the tiles, which is continued even around the external corners of the buildings and balconies without being interrupted by other materials such as metal rails or the like. This was possible thanks to exact mitre cuts which - just as all the facade construction works were carried out by Rolf Schlagenhauf AG (CH-8706 Meilen). This consistent and homogeneous solution lends the buildings a sovereign monolithic physical form.

(Picture source: AGROB BUCHTAL Gmbh / A. Faragulo) Depending on the incidence of light and the position, three-dimensional tiles of AGROB BUCHTAL create alternating effects and discreet charms, which turn the surrounding park into a “park for the senses“.

(Picture source: AGROB BUCHTAL Gmbh / Adriano Faragulo) “Stiftung Vivendra” is embedded in a park-like environment (which is difficult to show on a photo because of the spacious topography) and offers cerebrally handicapped persons all the possibilities for learning, living and working.

Future and conclusion Competent planning, careful processing and high-quality materials have led to an overall result which is convincing in every respect: a stable, intelligent construction is hidden behind the building shell conveying an almost futuristic impression. This successful interplay offers the best conditions for durability, cost-effectiveness and lasting aesthetics

BRINGING THE HEART OF AFRICA INTO THE HEART OF ANY HOME OR BUSINESS Pangea Sculptures can be viewed at their showroom, via their digital catalogue, and also at selected Design and Interiors shows across the UK where the response has been overwhelming. The detailed pieces are handmade by a team of artisan craftsmen in Africa and imported exclusively to the UK by Pangea Sculptures. There is a wonderful variety of creatures to choose from and each individual piece is painstakingly constructed entirely from recycled metal, with the largest sculptures of the giraffes at 4.3m tall taking around 1500 hours to complete. Due to the nature of their construction there are variations between the pieces as they are all individually designed and hand welded, with the finished pieces retaining many irregular markings which add to their charm and authenticity. A brand new showroom has recently opened in Lancashire to showcase a selection of the animals available, so that clients can view the pieces in detail and appreciate the skill and workmanship that goes in to every sculpture. Two majestic elephants currently flank the entrance of the showroom, realistic in every detail and making a grand statement at approximately 2.5m high. The sculptures are gracing locations across the UK and abroad and offer the chance to purchase a unique work of art that is equally at home indoors or outside. If you are looking for a decorative element

to finish a scheme, or a statement piece to enhance a project or brief, you need look no further than Pangea. These beautiful sculptures are entirely handmade in Africa and hand finished in the UK, with a professional lacquer coating to protect the natural metal finish. The sculptures also look magnificent in the shining chrome and bronze finishes which are similarly protected. There is also a hand painted option available which gives a more subdued finish. Some of the sculptures will be limited edition pieces with special finishes applied and no two will be exactly alike due to their handcrafted design and production process. The large sculptures are professionally installed in soft ground or hard standing using anchor points which are welded to the feet of the sculptures and they are secured with spikes of varying length depending on the size of the piece. These fixings are for the safety and stability of the sculpture only and do not constitute any security measure. Each of the large sculptures comes with a beautifully illustrated and numbered certificate of authenticity, which details the date of release of the design, the name of the client and the authorised signature on behalf of Pangea Sculptures. Clients are also provided with full instructions and guidelines for the after care of their sculptures and their safety and maintenance when placed outside, meaning that they can be enjoyed for many years to come. Private viewing appointments are available on request outside showroom hours for clients who wish to take their time in a relaxed and discreet environment when making their choice of sculpture. These appointments are particularly useful for designers and traders who need to discuss a specific brief, lead time for manufacture or installation logistics.

JIS Europe Ltd JIS Europe Ltd is the original supplier of stainless steel towel rails to the UK bathroom industry. Where we led others inevitably followed. Speaking of the reasons why we chose to manufacture our range of towel rails from stainless steel is Marketing and Design Director, Claire Wilkinson.

why this was and he said that the rusted ones were chrome plated whilst the others were manufactured from stainless steel. I surmised that if this had happened to me it had happened to others. It was a pretty pivotal moment. There are many benefits to stainless steel, firstly being that it will not rust, flake or corrode. This becomes even

Equally as important, especially in today’s climate, is that the manufacturing process for stainless steel is ecologically sound. Stainless steel is 100% recyclable in itself and is manufactured from over 90% recyclable product. Furthermore there are no harmful chemical plating processes involved in its manufacture.

There are many benefits to stainless steel, firstly being that it will not rust, flake or corrode. “We were looking at various business opportunities and had decided on ladder towel rails as it was an emerging growth market. Whilst I was in the midst of the initial design process, I had a number of bathroom accessories in my bathroom and I had noticed that some of them had pitted and rusted whilst others of the same age where still pristine. I asked my husband

more important when you consider the very nature of the bathroom, wet, damp and steamy. It is a long lasting, hard wearing product, small scratches can be polished out and it is easily maintained with water and a micro-fibre cloth. It can be utilised in all systems including open. Its practicability is its first and foremost benefit. There are many others.

It has a deep lustrous appearance making it aesthetically pleasing. We supply our entire range in both a polished and brushed finish. They are quite different in appearance and open up the bathroom to both a more traditional and modern aesthete. Stainless steel is hygienic and easy to maintain. It is utilised in both commercial kitchens and hospitals throughout, where its hygienic qualities have long been recognised.

It is a hard material to master, in that it needs to be well manufactured from the off, there are no plating processes to cover up shoddy workmanship. Being the forerunner we have mastered our product and are proud to offer a 25 year guarantee. Our customer service is second to none, we hold vast stocks and offer a 24 hour turnaround service on all orders placed before midday. National City Aquatic Center Safdie Rabines Architects Located fifteen miles north of the U.S./Mexico border in southern San Diego County, CA, the single-story, two-structure center marks the realization of National City’s long-term goal to replace a makeshift facility housed in trailers for over a decade.

Archetech - Page 52

Sited on a scarce section of accessible coastland owned by the Port of San Diego, the 5,500 squarefoot complex is positioned on the southern edge of a 5½-acre public park, where it complements the coastline just inside the mouth of the Sweetwater River Channel as it flows into San Diego Bay. Designed to facilitate recreational and educational services for the community, the new center is a key civic amenity and contemporary landmark with unobstructed views towards protected wetlands, San Diego Bay and beyond.

The center’s easternmost structure contains a large gathering and educational space beneath a faceted, flying roof. Perched atop its base of glass walls, the roof appears to float as kite gliding into the air, creating a fluid dynamic for its larger counterpart to the west. Inside, the geometries of a saw tooth ceiling are emphasized with maple-shaded laminate layered on micro-perforated aluminum. Carpet in ocean shades of teal, turquoise and aqua blues laid in a sunburst pattern accentuates the dimension of the space. Gullshaped decals applied as bird strike prevention measures cast playful shadows that 'fly’ through the room as the sun travels across the sky.

Archetech - Page 54

Directly to the west, the center’s offices are housed in a 650 square-foot glass box enclosed with 4-foot intermittentlyoperable windows. The box introduces a large white, concrete block structure used for boat and equipment storage, locker rooms, showers and restrooms. With outward protruding angles and porthole-like rectangular window apertures, the ship-like edifice ‘flows’ up-channel in the wake of the kite structure that leads it. Separate yet unified, the two buildings are enclosed and coalesced with custom galvanized steel gates clad with luminous acrylic resin panels.

‘Award winning Innovative Off-site designs that shatter all perceptions’

It is now widely accepted within the industry that off-site construction can provide high quality, fast and disruption free buildings but can they provide eye catching innovative designs or is this still an area of compromise? Rachel Davis, Business Development Director, said ‘With Premier Modular the answer is NO, we never compromise. New Islington, Manchester formerly The Cardroom Estate was considered one of the worst places to live in Manchester. It was therefore identified as one of the English Partnership’s ‘Millennium Communities’ to be rejuvenated and regenerated. The aim was to create the best place to live and work in Manchester, the Masterplan of the site was to link the existing Victorian canals with a new canal to form a focal point, adding inspiring and innovative architecture would be the key to creating a sense of place. Premier Modular Ltd working as a specialist subcontractor to Conlon Construction have just completed New Islington Free School in Manchester. This will be a new home for 420 children and is due to open for the September term 2016. Premier worked with their architectural partners Vaughan Architecture & Design to create this visually stunning

building with a feature entrance incorporating an oversailing roof, picture windows, a lightwell running the full length of the building and a modern external cladding finish. The building also includes a roof-top teaching space and an external play area linked to the building. Sustainable and wildlife features were also included such as PV panels, bird and bat boxes and a Redstart habitat on the roof. The School values are Creative, Innovative & Unique. These fit well with Premier’s own values and have certainly been captured in the new school building. Rachel Davis, Business Development Director at Premier Modular said ‘The client is at the centre of everything we do and we take great pride in pushing the limits of modular design. We are proud to have been involved in winning student accommodation building ‘The Foundry’ in Newcastle. Working with Sir Robert McAlpine we provided a 5 storey, 206 bedroom block which won ‘Project of the Year Up to £10m’ at the Construction News Awards. So at a time where an increased rate of build is required, budgets have been cut and there is a squeeze on available space, Premier Modular has once again firmly proved that design doesn’t have to take a back seat.

GreenCoat house named as finalist for the RIBA National Award for Architecture

A newly constructed residence in London, made with the colour coated product, GreenCoat PLX BT from SSAB, has been named as a finalist for the RIBA National Award – one of UK’s most prestigious prizes for architecture. The home and office residence named as a finalist has been dubbed the “Tin House” and was designed by the awardwinning Architect Henning Stummel. The construction features an exterior that is made entirely of GreenCoat PLX BT from SSAB, a company recognized worldwide for producing one of the best steels in the world.

The Tin House design features six interconnected pyramidal pods where GreenCoat PLX BT was chosen as the

“The choice to use GreenCoat PLX BT came down to its unique aesthetics as well as leading environmental properties. The tinsmiths who performed the build with GreenCoat PLX BT were very pleased with how easy it was to apply as well as the finished appearance, which utilized 500 mm sections between seams for a crisp look,” explains Sean McHugh, Sales Manager at Newell Roofing, SSAB’s supply partner for GreenCoat PLX BT products in the UK. Besides being well-known among tinsmiths for its easy hand forming and long colour retention, GreenCoat PLX BT features a Bio-based Technology (BT) with a substantial portion of the traditional fossil part replaced by a bio-based alternative. This unique, patented solution by SSAB reduces the environmental footprint significantly.

GreenCoat Nordic quality colour coated products are highly resistant to corrosion, UV radiation as well as scratches. They provide building specifiers with a significantly lighter material compared to alternative solutions and have a low temperature elongation for reduced buckling. The Tin House has already been named a winner of the RIBA Regional Award for the London area. RIBA awards and prizes have been honouring the best architecture in the UK and around the world for the past 50 years. www.ssab.com

The Tin House is one of only 20 other buildings to be named a finalist for the national award and will be featured on the Channel 4 TV programme, Grand Designs: House of the Year, a famous TV programme in the UK showcasing unique built houses. SDC had a selection of devices in each of its site offices including A4 mono and A3 colour printers for the many drawings needed for each project, day-to-day office printing and a separate photocopier, all causing space restrictions in an already limited workplace.

Why OKI?

The decision was made to standardise all devices so that they originate from a single vendor. Some of SDC’s existing units were OKI printers which had proved robust and reliable, so For more information OKI seemed the obvious choice. The OKI Smart Multifunction Printer (MFP)

“The reason for going for that specific device was to have all the functionality in one place – it can print, scan, fax and photocopy. With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync. When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’ Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files.

means that other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more. Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. This improvement is actually an entire set of smart tweaks we’ve made to inferencing and locking. You can download SketchUp Pro 2016 for free on a 30 day trial. After this time, the software will revert to SketchUp Make.

Evergreen campus reception pavilion Arte Charpentier Architectes

Arte Charpentier Architectes designed an innovative and challenging structure for the entry to the Evergreen campus.

Archetech - Page 68

Right at Paris’ doorstep, the Evergreen Campus hosts the Crédit Agricole’s head office. Multiple corporate entities share this space; the entire campus revolves around a central park that acts as its green lung. The reception pavilion spans on 600 m2 and two levels. A familiar landmark for those who work on the campus, it also helps visitors find their way more easily. This architectural structure opens the campus to the city and is in line with the site’s environmental vocation. Nine bending radiuses were necessary for the

metallic exterior’s complex design: - The “comma”, that protects the personnel’s entries with its porch; - The pavilion in itself, mostly glassed, by which visitors enter the site at street level and can access the campus at the first level inside. The building manages to cohesively blend its contemporary design to create a welcoming atmosphere in a fully functional environment. At street level visitors are welcomed under an awe-inspiring vaulted arch lit by colored LED lines showcasing different lighting patterns. At campus level a space that is largely open to the park can be used to host temporary exhibitions. It is

also able to receive an audience, as was asked by the Montrouge municipality. The building’s clear and bright tones express its modern and rigorous craft. The pavilion renews the site’s image, becomes the Evergreen campus’ store window and expresses the Crédit Agricole’s values of innovation and efficiency by displaying its architectural boldness. Arte Charpentier led the architecture, interior design and landscaping missions on the project.

GEZE UK’s entrance for the Whitworth Gallery is a work of art When the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, launched an architectural competition for its extension, it wanted a design that would make its important collection accessible to a wider range of visitors and re-establish the relationship with its grounds, home of England’s first gallery in a park. The winning design, by McInnes Usher McKnight Architects (MUMA), is both sensitive and inspirational – glass, stainless steel and brick have been married with the Grade II listed building to create an elegant exhibition space overlooking the park. And with over 440,000 people visiting each year, GEZE UK were chosen to create an automatic entrance to ensure that the building – and therefore the art - is accessible to all. The new glass entrance connects the gallery to the surrounding park and features two sets of sliding glass doors powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SL NT automatic operators. The doors have been positioned directly opposite each other to create a lobby. This contributes to sustainability by ensuring heat loss and gain is minimised without limiting accessibility. It also helps to ensure a pleasant even temperature for visitors and staff without blasts of hot or cold air when the doors are opened.

Archetech - Page 74

Thanks to its slim design and a drive unit height of just 7cm, the Slimdrive SL NT operator has been discretely installed so it is barely noticeable to the user. The operators are finished in the same brushed simulated stainless steel finish as the porch structure and two 130mm diameter stainless steel bollards with push pads have been installed to allow visitors to activate the doors. Pocket screens have been installed to ensure the safety of visitors to the gallery. As with all GEZE’s automatic operators the Slimdrive SL NT enables compliance to the Equality Act and BS 8300. The Whitworth’s £15m extension project has already been recognised by the architectural community scooping a RIBA National Award 2015, Building of the Year in the RIBA North West Regional Awards and two AJ Retrofit Awards – Cultural & Public Buildings and Heritage & Listed

Buildings. It has also been awarded the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015 for ‘redefining the way that it engages with its public, connecting the building and surrounding park’. It was also was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize.

“The Slimdrive SL NT has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing whilst offering exceptional functionality and reliability, which is why it is chosen time and again for buildings such as the Whitworth that have high levels of footfall.”

Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK added: “The Whitworth is a culturally significant building with a collection of huge national importance, so it was a privilege to be involved in creating an entrance that would help make it easily accessible to the thousands of people that visit each year.

‘Aluprof on Prestigious North West Project’

One New Bailey is a new office development in Salford on the north bank of the River Irwell, situated next to Spinningfields and close the Lowry Hotel. The development is part of New Bailey, a new business and leisure hub within the growing area of Salford Central and offers 125,000 sq ft of prime commercial space adjacent to Manchester's central business district. Aluprof’s ‘cap-less’ curtain wall system, the advanced MB-SR50N EFEKT was used on all elevations of the new build and the fabrication and installation of the curtain wall was undertaken by CSi, Commercial Systems International, of Humberside. Stuart Green, Managing Director of CSi comments on the

installation: “We are proud to be a part of such a prestigious project in the heart of Salford’s new central business district. Our installation team completed a top notch installation and we are looking forward to working with contractor Bowmer & Kirkland on future projects. One New Bailey, was developed by English Cities Fund (ECf ), working closely with Salford Council and is funded and is owned by Legal & General. The building was designed by Aedas RHWL architects, who also are responsible for the masterplan of the area. With large, regular and efficient floorplates, averaging over 17,000 sq ft (net), designed specifically for flexibility and to facilitate split

tenancies, the One New Bailey development has achieved a Grade A, BREEAM 'Excellent' rating. Leading international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has announced that it will be leasing 80,000 sq ft within the building as the long term base for its Global Centre. The highly anticipated Menagerie restaurant will occupy one of the ground floor units, making this a truly mixed use scheme. ECf is a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and the Homes and Communities Agency. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. Further information is available on the company website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof’s UK offices on 0161 941 4005.

Pure Class in Sheer Glass Customers to a luxury car dealership in Birmingham will be able to reflect on the best of its brands with the installation of a glazed manual sliding wall defining the Bentley and Lamborghini areas of its showroom. The eight panel arrangement, using GEZE’s Manual Sliding Wall (MSW) with SmartGuide system and Pureline cover profile, is a seamless space divider with no metal surrounds, which separates the two sales areas while maintaining an open feel. The MSW was the ideal choice for Glassedge, which was commissioned to install the feature at Bentley Sytner, in the city centre.

The manual sliding wall (MSW) also incorporates a swing door with a polished stainless steel handle – making the two areas of the showroom accessible to customers and staff – without interrupting the fluidity of the glazing. In total, the wall spans seven metres in width and 3 metres in height. The MSW system is easy to handle - when the wall is not needed, the panels can be pulled back, into a parking space where they sit at a 90-degree angle – a real space saver which minimizes impact upon the room, or as at Bentley Sytner they are completely hidden away inside a wall cupboard. The overall effect is a contemporary stylish finish which benefits from the light and airy feel needed for a

showroom in which the cars themselves can take centre stage.

and when in place, the effort required to move the individual panels was minimal.

Kaz Spiewakowski, managing director of GEZE UK said: “Our MSW system presents a fantastic solution for retailers who want to use their space creatively. They can be used to open out or separate areas in shops, cafes, offices and hotels as well as prestigious car showrooms. We are delighted that Glassedge chose the MSW with Pureline profile in delivering its requirements for the Sytner showroom where the quality of Bentley and Lamborghini vehicles can be seen in all their glory and benefit from the flow of natural light.

“Glassedge will most definitely be using the GEZE MSW range again as our company is very confident in the products’ quality, robustness of the materials used, plus the excellent personal service we received from both GEZE UK’s sales and technical support staff.”

Glassedge was delighted to have been specified by MCS Special Projects for this prestige project and found the GEZE MSW sliding stacking design ideally suited both its customer’s and client’s requirements. Said Chris Beckett, Managing Director of Glassedge Ltd: “It was very easy to install

Fitted with 12 mm clear, low iron toughened glass which minimises sun reflection and so allows as much light in to the showroom as possible, the installation also features GEZE’s Pureline, a silver anodised profile with a modern angled design. Each panel discretely locks into the next one via a floor

locking device, which is completely hidden from view. Above, the recessed roller track further enhances the sleek appearance whilst the SmartGuide system enhances its functionality.

Reynaers provides façades for impressive Manchester development Manchester’s newest independent film hub and visual arts centre has an impressive façade using curtain wall products from Reynaers. The external cladding and roofing work on Home, found on the city’s First Street, was carried out by Prater. This was made possible due to funding from the European Union for a joint venture between Ask Developments and Manchester City Council. Overall, a total of 51 units of Reynaers’ curtain walling product CW 50 were installed, as well as Reynaers’ CS 68 aluminium windows. Reynaers was consulted about the design of the façade in the prefabrication stages to help ensure the system allowed for building movement and live loads.

Archetech - Page 80

Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “Lead architect Ernst ter Horst’s brief was to make the building of the highest quality and present itself as warm and welcoming. He was inspired by ideas of filling the building with life and the playful interaction with daylight. “Our curtain walling system Concept Wall 50 offered unlimited design freedom and maximum transparency for this build.” Netherlands-based architects Mecanoo International wanted to ensure there was a strong connection between inside and out. Home also needed a strong identity,

so it developed a dramatic cantilevering prow to mark the front entrance to the building and shelter an external café terrace. The building’s triangular shape combined with soft, curved corners sets it apart from the adjacent developments, with its elevations articulated to protect against solar gain.

Ian McHale, project manager at Prater said: “We chose Reynaers because of the vast experience it has with bespoke high-end, complex commercial projects, as well as the team’s outstanding product knowledge and expertise.” www.reynaers.co.uk

317 Social Housing Units / SV60

Archetech - Page 82

Given the uniqueness of the initiative designed to provide subsidised housing based on an attitude that is contemporary and sensitive to current social trends, a comprehensive strategy has been adopted based on an interpretation of the PLACE and typological research based on improving living conditions and processes in order to give rise to quality housing that is sustainable and adapted to the various considerations that influence the construction of the architectural concept. We understand the place as being an accumulator of situations, elements or events that are built as a single concept based on a broad and complex vision that establishes guidelines for recognition that go beyond the strictly visual or physical values. The place we envisage has wind, light, malleable spaces, the future memory of the inhabitants, in addition to certain property development patterns that are already established.

Based on this interpretation, an intervention is proposed that is tailored to the circumstances pertaining to the place and attempts to integrate itself as an abstract element superimposed by means of a geometric pattern that governs the entire operation. This framework allows us to streamline all the factors pertaining to the project in order to propose an overall approach that is unitary both in terms of construction and urban design. We bring into play a range of parameters aimed at creating an independent fragment of a city that reconstructs perceptive essences associated with an understanding of the place itself. Empty spaces, squares, streets, vantage points and courtyards are configured as basic elements in order to define our new "neighbourhood." Due to the sharp slope of the plot (40 metres of height difference), the proposal is to amend the topography by means

of a series of terraces integrated into the geometric framework, with slopes of approximately 5 metres, and on which the various buildings will stand. These buildings will adapt to the different slopes, adopting a winding pattern to seek better orientations and spread out in a south to north direction (which corresponds to the orientation of most of the blocks). In addition, this arrangement will occur in relation to the adjacent streets in order to allow pedestrian access to various points on the plot. The buildings are proposed in a way that gives greater importance to the empty space and to their relationship with the terrain than to their own or independent form. A mixed (mostly residential) programme is envisaged based on the inclusion of 317 subsidised dwellings (32,742.46 sq. metres) and various commercial premises that are strategically distributed around different parts of the plot (2,472.49 sq. metres in total), together with the

necessary provision of parking spaces that are available associated with each building in the basement floors that occur in the staggered layout. The aim, from the external perception of the project, is for the continuity of space, and the staggered arrangement, with the ground floors that become covered areas that can be walked under, and the possibility of moving around the various plots as a neighbourhood where urban situations such as squares, vantage points, streets, etc. occur, gives the whole project qualities that depend more on the life of its inhabitants than on the architecture. The idea is a building model that aims to improve the quality of life by using systems that optimise the conditions of use and energy saving, encouraging wherever possible the use of the area's own natural resources. The degree to which the sun falls on the façades depends on the orientation (northsouth) and is controlled by means of a "deep façade" system (whose depth varies depending on the orientation, deeper to the south and less so to

A cross-ventilation system is proposed, since all the dwellings have double

SUPRION HARD WATER SCALE INHIBITORS

Archetech - Page 84

Hard water as a result of dissolved mineral salts naturally occurring in the majority of water supplies may result in short term potentially expensive and inconvenient essential maintenance or premature equipment replacement as a result of accumulated scale deposits, or even a potential health hazard by providing the areas and nutrients where bacteria can colonise and of course some form of treatment now an integral part of Building Regulations. Traditional Salt based ionexchange water softening or some of the more recent innovative media processes are the only guaranteed protection since the culprit minerals are permanently removed at “point of treatment”. These systems can be complex and require space, high capital investment, after sales service and management. There may also be logistical and/or practical issues in providing untreated bypasses for potable applications, particularly in commercial installations, albeit essential in conjunction with Laundry/Dishwashing Machines and/or steam generating/total evaporation processes. Selection from the numerous “conditioners” can however be a minefield and still remains contentious as a result of over enthusiastic sales claims,

inappropriate applications or simply inferior technology and some are seriously expensive with microprocessors, programming, and commissioning requirements. Systems now available will have wide ranging and varying operating parameters comprising Hydro Magnetic, Electro Magnetic, Permanent Magnetic, Ultra-Sonic, Electric Field, Electrostatic, Electrolytic, Catalytic and so on, some have even employed Radio Waves. All are however designed and intended to maintain “mineral suspension” and most effective when the water is constantly flowing. In the absence of any empirical evidence or definitive conclusions published by independent recognised bodies, British Gas conducted their own investigative product comparison evaluations

several years ago, subsequently endorsed performance of the SUPRION and now installed over 70,000 units for protection of water heating appliances. Full technically illustrated details and selected applications are available on our web site, drawing your attention to the numerous unique design features and long term operating benefits: * Environmentally friendly zero carbon footprint * Operator fool proof with self-energising design * No power supply, magnets or coils * No micro-processors with potential BMS requirement * No commissioning required * Generally maintenance free with no filters or chemicals * No electrolysis evident with sacrificial electrode designs * Clear and open tube construction with no flow

restriction or pressure drop. * Standard progressive range of sizes from 10 to 450mm diameter * EH prefix models specifically designed for electrically heated appliances * WRAS approved for drinking water applications * Five year manufacturer's warranty - minimum ten years operation * British Gas endorsement on performance * Simple installation with either compression, screwed or flanged ends * No minimum linear length before/after elbows, tees etc * Vertical or horizontal orientation * Competitive pricing structure For more information, visit: www.aquaflow.co.uk Tel: 01603 279 806, or email info@aquaflow.co.uk

TIMBER SKYSCRAPERS, HYBRID CONSTRUCTION AND MORE AT TIMBER EXPO Timber Expo has just announced details of its comprehensive seminar schedule headed up by TRADA (the Timber Research and Development Association). As part of the award winning UK Construction Week, the show’s content will tackle the biggest challenges faced by the timber industry. Leading industry association TRADA will coordinate the Timber Focus Theatre, providing three days (18 – 20 October) of insightful seminar sessions across a broad spectrum of industry trends and issues. With opportunities for the audience to join the debate, the programme offers a unique chance to converse with influential speakers from across the timber industry. Day one of the seminar schedule will focus on pushing the boundaries of what is possible with timber and will be chaired by David Hopkins, Managing Director of the Timber Trade Federation (TTF). Topics will include building timber skyscrapers, innovation and growing the timber market with speakers such as Michael Ramage, Senior University Lecturer in architectural engineering at Cambridge University and Jon Shanks, Associate Structural Engineer, Buro Happold and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bath.

Day two will tackle the challenges of making it easier to specify timber. Panellists will discuss the introduction of TRADA’s new Timber Pre-Scheme Manual, how the UK’s National Structural Timber

The final day of seminars will explore the possibilities of hybrid construction from both an engineer’s, architect’s and CLT supplier’s perspective. Speakers from Buro Happold engineers, Bennett’s architects and KLH will draw on case studies to bring out their key points.

The other topic covered on the third day is a look at the continuing innovation for structural timber frames and UK manufacturing with speakers including Alex Cook, Technical Project Coordinator at Barratt Developments PLC, Alastair Parvin, Co-founder of WikiHouse Foundation, Calum Murray, Director at CCG (Scotland) Ltd and Alex Goodfellow, Managing Director of Stewart Milne Timber Systems. Rupert Scott, Membership and Marketing Manager at TRADA, commented: “With so much change going on around us –

both innovation from the industry and at a wider macro-economic level – the Timber Expo seminar programme will be invaluable for taking time out to think and digest what this all means for your business.” Nathan Garnett, Event Director for Timber Expo, added: “With the increasing demand for sustainable building methods at a faster rate of completion, the timber industry is set to see record growth over the next few years. How then can the industry position itself best to capitalise on this opportunity and promote the many benefits of timber in construction? This year’s Timber Expo is here to do just that and I’m confident that the seminar content that TRADA has so diligently put together will offer real value and deliver strategy for the future of this sector. Importantly, the show also represents the first major event following the decision to leave the EU and as such will play a role in settling any nerves within the sector.” In addition to the Timber Focus Theatre there will also be a Timber Flooring Workshop. In conjunction with the Flooring Industry Training Association, top master fitters will create informative presentations covering products from all areas of contact flooring, including wood, carpet, vinyl, laminate, tools and accessories. There will also be a dedicated Offsite Zone that will straddle both the Build Show and Timber Expo. This section will be an exciting hub for one of the most talked about topics in the construction industry. For more information, booking enquiries and to register for free please visit www.timber-expo.co.uk or follow @TimberExpo on Twitter.

Page 87 - Archetech

In the afternoon the focus turns to skills. Led by David Campbell, Membership and Training Director at the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the session will look at how the industry can attract and keep new recruits.

Specification (NSTS) has helped get timber specifications right for major subcontractors and what the industry can do to make it easier to specify timber. The second day will also look at timber’s role in the custom and self build market with Richard Bacon, MP for South Norfolk and instigator of the ‘Right to Build’ Act, which has radically changed the commercial landscape in this sector, joining the speaker line up.

Hitachi showcases new heat pump product line-up at UK Construction Week

Hitachi’s expanded Yutaki air source heat pump product range is one of the widest on the market and is being showcased at HVAC 2016 (part of UK Construction Week) at the NEC from 18th-20th October.

Archetech - Page 92

"As a relatively new player in the UK air source heat pumps market, we're excited to be involved in the HVAC 2016 show which brings together thousands of industry professionals in one central venue. We'll be showcasing our full Yutaki range of products and the long-term benefits of heat pumps to an audience who we believe will be key in getting renewable energy sources out into the wider market," commented Andy Hooper, UK Heating Manager, Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions. Some of the best seasonal performance figures Completely redesigned to meet the needs of specifiers, installers and homeowners - and utilising common components, common outdoor units and simplified design to benefit both end users and installers - the extended Yutaki product line-up includes a total of 70 new models which are more compact for

small installation spaces and are lighter weight for easier handling. The introduction of common components and controllers, streamlines product training requirements, reduces the need for carrying multiple spares, and lowers installation and maintenance time. Performances have also been improved, with higher COPs, better seasonal efficiencies and higher capacities. All Yutaki models also be supplied with a new Cooling Kit accessory to enable both heating and cooling modes. Four new models Yutaki-S has three new 4.3kW, 6.0kW and 7.5kW indoor units with dimensions of 600 x 792 x 300mm to fit a standard kitchen cupboard space. Efficiency has also been improved with COPs up to 5.25 and with an Energy Class Rating up to A+++. Yutaki-S is suitable for the heating and domestic hot water requirements of small to large properties, and is ideal for both new build and renovation projects. The new all-in-one YutakiSCombi integrated solution has been designed specifically for the UK market. The indoor unit has a built-in 200 or

260L stainless steel hot water cylinder, as well as the main hydraulic components such as the pump, filter and back up heater, plus a newly-designed controller. The indoor unit is pre-plumbed and pre-wired, making the installation simpler with less internal space needed. High temperature Yutaki-S80, which generates domestic hot water at up to 80oC, has been completely redesigned with easier connections at the top of the indoor unit for simpler installation. Utilising Hitachi’s unique ‘smart cascade’ design, the Yutaki-S80 can be used as a replacement for inefficient boilers without changing radiator sizes or any existing hot water tank. The all-new compact monobloc Yutaki-M requires no refrigeration pipework or internal unit. With a new controller, reduced noise levels, greater outputs up to 16kW and improved efficiencies, with COPs up to 5.0 and an Energy Class Rating of up to A++, Yutaki-M has been completely redesigned to meet the needs of the UK market. Single menu for all Yutaki models A new multi-function wired

remote control is common to all Yutaki models – meaning a single menu for all Yutaki products with a dedicated installer view, wizard start up configuration and a more intuitive menu for quick and simple commissioning. The alarm history is also logged to assist engineers with troubleshooting. Talking about the benefits for end users, Andy Hooper, UK Heating Manager, Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions said, “Yutaki has some of the best seasonal performance (SCOP) figures on the market, many models are A+++ efficient and the new wired and wireless thermostats are simple to use with weekly timers, holiday modes and a favourite button, so it’s a great product range for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills as well as their impact on climate change.” All Hitachi’s Yutaki air source heat pumps are MCS approved, eligible for the domestic and non-domestic RHI and have domestic hot water (DHW) Legionella Protection and a five-year warranty as standard. www.hitachiheating.com

RINNAI GOES SOLO FOR CONTINUOUS FLOW WITH A STORE…. Rinnai’s latest innovation in the energy efficient fast delivery of instantly useable hot water is the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater. The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind for the UK to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint. The design parameters of this product empowers specifiers, designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications it was once not previously possible. For instance, the Infinity Solo will have both 35kW and 54kW sized appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter

can readily use this technology. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and it makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal

shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.

Penthouse on the Park /

KNOF design

KNOF design creates spectacular 360° Sunrise-Sunset Penthouse in Sofia

KNOF design (based in London and founded by New York designer Susan Knof ) has completed its first major commission: the remodelling of a spectacular 360° penthouse in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, uniting two separate apartments into a single 3,600 sq ft space. The new, one-storey penthouse features floor-to-ceiling glazing all the way round and offers its owners incredible panoramic views over the city and adjacent mountains with all the benefits of continuous natural light, from sunrise through to sunset.

‘Making the most of the light throughout the day also meant the interiors scheme was predominantly created in natural and light colours’ added Susan Knof, ‘from the pale-wash of the timber flooring to the pure white of the kitchen. To ensure the apartment had personality accents, strong and punchy colour was also introduced, especially for the children’s bedrooms and playroom and the scheme’s stunning ensuites in purple and green mosaic.’ The Brief The brief from the client was to merge two existing properties (an east and west apartment) to create a single, open living environment that

allowed for an unobstructed kitchen, dining, living and entertaining space, where full advantage could be taken of the views, whilst also providing private areas for the master bedroom and children’s areas. Interior Design Language ‘On entering the apartment, the language of the interior scheme is immediately apparent’, commented Susan Knof. ‘The elegant, yet subdued, use of soft natural materials greets you in the primary entrance hall. As you proceed past the naturaldyed, grey-veneered walls, the open space is subtle and sophisticated and allows the gorgeous mountainous natural environment beyond to take centre stage.’ Architectural Challenges From an interior architectural standpoint, the main challenge of the project was the original planning of the overall building – especially the existing plumbing stacks, which allowed little possibility for exploration of different bathroom locations and the new design very much had to

work around that. Structurally, there were also given core walls that had to remain in place. In addition, the full height windows also offered limited space for new ceiling and lighting logistics, and, most restrictive of all, the M&E services were planned along the perimeter full height glazing walls, seemingly blocking the views and the implementation of sheer or black-out curtaining. This was overcome by re-coordinating the mechanical layouts and plans, so that the air handling units were brought inside the internal core walls and concealed in custom joinery units. Design Walk-Through The entrance hall features gentle grey-toned marble flooring with subtle and beautiful natural striations. There are full-height, naturaldyed, grey veneered walls which wrap the existing building core, plus a new, flush, integrated and linear bespoke lighting detail which demarcates the space as you step beyond to enter the grand, light-filled main space.

Page 101 - Archetech

‘Our clients – an international family of four – purchased the flats in a prominent high rise in the city’, commented Susan Knof, Creative Director and Founder of KNOF design, ‘and briefed us to combine the apartments to create a single, luxurious, bright and open environment, which would make the best use of the incoming light at different times of the day, but which would also allow them to control the degree of privacy they wanted at particular times or for particular spaces.’

The light-privacy balance in the penthouse was achieved by fitting soft voiles all the way around the 360° glazing, as well as black-out blinds, so that the owners have the choice of completely open living; light-filled but private living using the voiles or else blocking the light out completely – perfect for watching movies for example.

Archetech - Page 102

The main open kitchen, dining, entertaining and living area features a consistent and elegant approach with the external environment providing colour, light and drama. The kitchen is from the sleek contemporary white Molteni Dada Trim range with custom detailing, along with an acid-etched backsplash, which is fully operable, allowing for concealed kitchen storage. ‘As the kitchen is part of the overall open living plan’ Susan Knof explained, ‘it was essential for it to be both aesthetically-pleasing and functional and the chosen solution therefore allows for clean living at the slide of a panel. Although the design sought to maximise light and views here, the client also wanted the adjoining children’s playroom to be private and so we included a glass light panel at the far

left of the kitchen area, which seals off views into the space, but still allows for the flow of light.’ Adjacent to the kitchen is an open dining area with table seating for ten. A dramatic custom sculptural lighting piece (called ‘Match’) above the table, by Vibia, adds subtle drama to the space and allows for spot lighting across the full dining surface. Alongside the main dining table is a white piano, which was purchased by the mother of the family both for her own use and for the lessons for the children for their lessons. The entrance walls run alongside, containing not only the concealed air handling units, but also featuring largescale mirrors to reflect the natural landscape so that the views and light can be enjoyed in no matter where on is sitting. Two elegant and Japanese-influenced Miyabi

console tables sit below the mirrors and are from Interius arredamenti. Next to the piano comes a flexible seating area comprised of two, contemporary, wenge-stained oak open-backed chairs with custom zebra print fabric from Dedar and two incidental tables - a black and a white Skandium ripple table – which add contrast to the overall soft, grey-toned environment. The main living area has two custom upholstered B + B Italia sofas with a dark grey velvet accent piping detail. The seating area is grounded with two large-scale tables with integrated ottomans in custom metallic embossed leather by Moore and Giles. A three-dimensional custom lighting configuration directly above (the Link light, again by Vibia) provides a sculptural element, giving soft diffused light to the overall area,

whilst custom cushions by KNOF design(using fabric by Weitzner) add colour and texture. The television and apartment’s state-of-theart audio-visual system are integrated into the bespoke, full-height joinery (by KNOF design) in a subtle reuse of the dyed grey veneer. Soft voile ‘Meander’ curtaining by Weitzner is located along the full perimeter to add a soft elegant effect and diffused light. Located off of the main living area are the master bedroom and study spaces. The circulation area leading to the master suite is a continuation of the natural dyed grey timber veneered panels with storage behind. An existing overhead structural beam is received by an open shelving detail incorporating varying toned dyed natural veneers in natural dyed pink, bird’s eye maple, grey walnut,

eucalyptus and natural Tay (koto).

‘A very important aspect of this scheme’, Susan Knofexplained, ‘was using materials in such a way as to allow for individuality whilst still adhering to the client’s budget. I always seek to make use of every available space and have beautifullyintegrated furniture with a real attention to detail. It’s what really makes the difference. The small intimate spaces that get used on a daily basis do not go unnoticed. It’s my intention to make the user feel special every time the apartment is in use.’ Another notable detail in the master bedroom is the custom-designed, fullyupholstered soft grey nova suede headboard by KNOF

design with an abstract, crisscross, deep nailing pattern, picking up on the crossed legs of the Poliform white, matte-lacquered side tables. Full-length, flowing voiles and curtaining by Weitzner provides the expected level of luxury, with an overall feel of understated sophistication. The shared open master walkin wardrobe is located off the master bedroom and provides direct access to the individual his-and-hers ensuites. It is a subtle, elegant space with open wardrobes anchored by a centrally-located pendant light with a bespoke joinery unit below. The small storage joinery unit is made of a white satin matte lacquer finish with inlaid leather top and brushed satin stainless handles, again by Holland and Sherry. ‘His’ master ensuite is fully-tiled in custom-cut, small, rectilinear natural limestone tiles. A surface-mounted basin rests

on top of a custom vanity with a honed quartzite top, a dyed timber drawer front and open stone shelf below. ‘Her’ ensuite is a glamorous space with all walls clad in a soft pink rosa egeo marble with bright white Thassos marble stone flooring. Inset opal white marble stone shelves provide some open towel and display storage, whilst a large-scale bowl shaped basin sits on a white quilted front lacquered vanity. Joinery in the study is by Molteni and C and is crisp and contemporary with a full height charcoal glass sliding wardrobe door. There is a combination of open and closed storage, along with an open TV and an integrated desk, which can be easily closed off. The dark joinery is offset by an exquisite two-tone textured wall covering in a mid-toned grey finish. The ensuite has a newly-integrated, full-height,

In the master bedroom, the fabrics and finishes continue in the same soothing grey and natural cream tones with soft textural details and an added bright coral accent. An exquisite fully-bespoke vanity, wardrobe, and media unit is the highlight of the space. The existing core walls came into play here and so it was important for the joinery to work around and with this given constraint. The bespoke-designed unit by KNOF design features a built in vanity with a white quartzite work surface and small, individually-sized storage drawers in varying toned dyed veneers, all with brushed satin stainless handles with grey leather inlay by Holland and Sherry. The backdrop to the vanity is a carefully-laid, textural, ikatprinted wall covering with a

large scale, centrally-placed, bronze-embossed framed mirror by Porta Romana. A bright plush velvet coral chair offsets the soft tones.

acid-etched glass fixed panel, allowing passive light into the internal space. All ensuite walls are clad in metallic copper penny round mosaics by Ann Sacks with a custom white carrera marble vanity with a mitered drawer front and dark grey timber veneer shelf below. As in the main reception room, the nature of this space is multifunctional, aligned with the client’s wishes. On the alternate side of the plan sit the guest toilet and children’s rooms. The guest toilet is neatly tucked into the circulation and continues the soft grey cream and soft pink colour palette. Sleek Boffi tapware adds to the clean modern layout. The main wall is fully clad in a subtle patchwork of varying tonal porcelain patterned tiles by Patricia Urquiola. A textured round bronzed mirror and decorative branch shaped wall sconce add to the gently organic feel of the room.

The two children’s rooms offer bright, colourful, and youthful interiors with a variety of specialty details allowing for creative and individual spaces. The bedroom along the south façade uses a medley of greens, yellows, and purple tones with small-scale patterning. The other bedroom and ensuite feature soft pinks and peaches with a pearlised floral wall covering and built-in joinery. The ensuite here is a brightly-coloured and well-lit space with full-height walls covered in glass mosaics that transition from dark to soft pink in a gradient manner. Like its sister bathroom, it features a custom vanity mirror which is playful, painterly and back-etched. The children’s TV lounge area is located in the southwest corner with a custom, fullheight media and storage unit by Molteni and C. At the end of the unit is an integrated,

acid-etched glass panel, which connects back to the adjacent kitchen. A soft grey corner ‘tufty time’ sofa by B + B Italia rests on a brightly coloured custom-designed wool rug byKNOF design, which adds to the relaxed and playful vibe. Susan Knof summed up the project by saying ‘Above all, this penthouse scheme fulfils the client’s brief, providing a home with clever planning and an astute awareness of detail. But, more than that, the quality of the finishes, the balanced palette, the customised furnishings and an overriding commitment to considered design fuse together and culminate in a sophisticated and harmonious contemporary luxury penthouse.’

Wide tiles in Carbon (120x240, Left)

Refin

Refin has launched Wide, a collection of porcelain tiles with subtle surface smudges, marks and imprints that perfectly emulate the look and feel of natural slate.

Wide offers plenty of flexibility, both in the colour selection and tile sizes available. There are five colours in the range: white (Chalk), black (Carbon), two shades of grey (Steel and Lead), and a green-grey (Olive), all of which are available both in a smooth version and a textured variant for outdoor use.

Archetech - Page 106

In addition, Wide is available in a 20mm thick version in the OUT2.0 collection, in two shades - Carbon and Steel. These thicker tiles can be installed in a number of ways; from traditional installation with adhesive, through to raised installation for temporary spaces, uneven ground or flooring areas where surfaces may need to be lifted for inspection. The large-format tiles (240x120cm, 120x120cm, 120x60cm) in the Wide collection are ideally suited for covering large, heavy-traffic areas and public spaces and can also be used in ventilated façades with visible or invisible anchoring systems. The 60x60cm and 30x60cm sizes are suitable for residential projects. A range of decorative tiles, Sketch, accompany the collection. The design features lines and grids as if hand-drawn in chalk, in the same base palette as Wide. These ceramic tiles with are perfect for creating accents and interventions in large spaces.

Porcelain Tiles Among the most significant features of Ceramiche Refin porcelain tiles are their strength, and their resistance to abrasion, frost and chemicals. Porcelain tiles are low maintenance and easy to clean without the use of harsh chemicals; they do not require sealing or special surface treatments. Due to their vitrified nature, they are the ideal surface to use in combination with an underfloor heating system.

UK’S BIGGEST FURNITURE EVENT OF THE YEAR THE JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW The UK’s number one furniture and furnishings event, the January Furniture Show (JFS), is set to be over 10% bigger and better for 2017. Hosting another strong line up of over 450 exhibitors, JFS is the place to be for retailers, buyers and commercial specifiers who are looking for the latest products and developments in the industry.

Archetech - Page 110

New sign ups Ekornes and Malini will join big names such as Parker Knoll, Sherborne, Ashley Manor Upholstery, Libra, Buoyant and Ercol showcasing everything from cabinet furniture, upholstery and beds to soft furnishings and giftware. The four-day show runs from Sunday 22 until Wednesday 25 January across five halls at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC). Visitors will get the chance to see all the latest innovations, collections, offers, promotions and sales

support which will be key to business success over the next 12 months. Laraine Janes of the January Furniture Show said: “We had 85% of 2016 exhibitors sign up for next year on the spot which shows what a success it really is and how integral it is to the furniture and furnishings business. We have had to increase hall space by 10% to accommodate the new enquiries and, laying strong foundations for the future of the show, we have just signed a seven year deal with the NEC.” The new long term deal with the NEC underlines the centre’s confidence in the future of the show. And the seven year commitment from JFS cements its position as the UK’s biggest and best furniture and furnishings event with the NEC as its home.

www.januaryfurnitureshow.com

Added Laraine: “The show is at the right venue at the right time of year for exhibitors to meet retail customers from across the UK. The transport links, countrywide connectivity, suitability and scale of the halls and the accessibility for exhibitors are why almost all the UK’s important trade events take place there. Last year saw changes to the NEC campus with the opening of Resorts World, and, adding another layer of nationwide connectivity will be the HS2 terminal opening at the NEC in 2023.” The next show will see Hall 5 as the major destination hall offering its strongest line up of commercial big hitters for years. Hall 4 boasts leading international cabinet brands while Hall 3 will be the place to visit for furnishing accessories. Hall 2 will be the centre for top end international contemporary furniture, while Hall 1 remains a destination hall for high end exclusive ranges.

Joliette art Museum

Today the Musée d’art de Joliette is recognized as Quebec’s most important regional art museum. While pursuing the objectives of conservation, dissemination and research established over half a century ago by its founders, the Musée continues to expand its permanent collection, which currently comprises some 8,500 works held in four collections: Canadian art, European art, Contemporary art and Archaeology. The complete transformation and expansion of the original building was necessary to offer of a wide range of programs structured around the promotion of its permanent collection and the presentation of temporary exhibitions,

as well as a host of educational and cultural activities for visitors of all ages. The addition of new flexible gallery space, animation rooms for youth, a multipurpose café, conference rooms and a rooftop terrace were necessary to open up the institution to the community and to allow it to play a larger role in the lives of the citizens of Joliette and its surrounding region. Our objective to enhance the connection between the institution and the public is achieved by adding three new volumes to the building that accentuate the dynamism of the existing cruciform composition and allows passers-by a glimpse of the activity happening within.

Furthermore, the fenestrated spaces frame views of the river L’Assomption and surrounding cityscape from within. Since its inauguration, the museum has become an important setting for social activities and gatherings such a classes, creative studios, performances, exhibitions, guided tours, cocktails, and concerts. Particular attention was paid to the original building by revealing and cleaning thexisting concrete structure that had been covered up with brick and plaster over time. In order to facilitate visitor orientation and create a dramatic double-height space, part of the second floor concrete slab was demolished at the entrance of the building here the original museum atrium had once existed. The museum greatly benefits from a succession of loosely programmed spaces with varied spatial arrangements that permit and encourage a multiplicity of functions. Furthermore, the reverberation time of each of these spaces was modulated with the use of absorptive acoustical surfaces, while motorized blinds control natural light levels, and a series of audio-visual infrastructures allow multimedia content to be broadcasted and featured in all of these spaces.

A work of art, conceived as part of the integration of art to architecture program, is perched at the top of the new, fully glazed emergency staircase and is seamlessly integrated in the exhibition circuit. The project required a complete code compliance update of the existing spaces including the renovation of the museum archives in the basement, the replacement of all the mechanical and electrical systems, the complete waterproofing the building envelope, the construction of new office spaces and the creation of a entirely universally accessible museum. Also included in the architects mandate were the signage design and the selection of all interior and exterior furnishings.

JAMES LATHAM SUPPLIES FLOORING FOR RUSTIC BARN CONVERSION The UK’s biggest independent distributor of quality timber and panel products, James Latham, has supplied 110m2 of Amboise French Oak wood flooring from their Bausen range to complete a barn conversion in Ulnes Walton, Lancashire.

barn. Similarly, the French Oak also fits with the characteristic dark barn doors.

The E47 Amboise French Oak wood flooring was specially cut and engineered to fit around the original brick walls of Calverts Barn, and was fitted by Inspired Solutions in Standish.

Deborah Grant & Neil Gibbons, the owners of Calverts Barn, said: “The main aspect of this build was to make sure that anything new added to the project did not take anything away from the rustic feel and original features used throughout. The Amboise French Oak wood flooring is the ideal colour and grain for the rest of the property.”

The super rustic graded wood was chosen to fit in with the barn’s exposed wooden ceiling beams which run throughout the property. The Oak itself has a natural dark finish, with a very visible grain and beautiful knots which, again, feature in the original beams in the

“I am really pleased with the quality of the finish, everything has been cut to a very hard and specific degree. The flooring now looks like it was always part of the property because it just fits in perfectly, both in a stylish way and physically.”

With a large wood order to engineer to size and fit 110m2, the job took a total of 4 days for the Inspired Solutions Standish team to complete. Neil Hawkesworth from Inspired Solutions Standish said: “I will only use the highest quality of wood, which is why I go back to James Latham time and time again because I have confidence that the finished result will be at its best. The E47 Amboise French Oak has a hardwearing grain that not only fits with the existing décor but has a wear trim of 6mm.” James Latham’s Timber Sales Representative, Carl Hulme, said: “We are really pleased that Miss Grant & Mr Gibbons are very happy with the finished result. The E47 Amboise French Oak is the ideal match for the super rustic décor that Calverts Barn needed. The wood just adds to the already characteristic and historic property, so I am delighted that the E47 was chosen for this project.”

Eole on the Evergreen campus Eole, headquarters integrated within the city and its landscape Right at Paris’ doorstep, the Evergreen Campus hosts the Crédit Agricole’s head office. Multiple corporate entities share this space. The entire campus revolves around a central park that acts as its green lung.

Constructed in an 8-shape, Eole is built around two large quiet gardens. The building’s shape combines rationality, fluidity, continuity and organic unity. The workspaces open into the

Eole’s interior spaces have been designed so as to bring the building’s core light and clarity and allow guests to orient themselves easier. The atmosphere is contemporary and intemporal at the same time. By satisfying its requirements, Eole symbolizes the Crédit Agricole’s involvement in favor of sustainable development and the EverGreen Campus’ renewal.

Page 129 - Archetech

The conception of Eole - a 67 000 m² building made in four years - preserves and upholds the site’s environmental vocation: buildings operate in accordance with the HQE norms (high environmental quality), new structures were built according to the BBC norms (low consumption buildings), soft energies usage (geothermic, solar and rain water is reused), 4 hectares of green spaces valorized.

Campus, the gardens and the site’s streets. The exteriors are arranged in sequences relatively to their orientation in accordance with the park and the patios. Woven stainless steel strands partially cover them. They filter natural light and constitute a passive sun blocker. At gardenlevel five terraces offer genuine gardens that anyone can enjoy. Hanging decks at the heart of the building create more green spaces with flexible lines.

KEMPEROL MEMBRANES PUT PICCADILLY GATE’S ROOFS BACK ON TRACK Three roofs of one of Manchester’s most iconic office buildings have been refurbished with an overlay of Kemperol liquid membranes from Kemper System. Piccadilly Gate is home to various Government departments including Education, Ofsted and Highways England. The 125,000sqft building adjacent to Manchester Piccadilly Station was refurbished in a £25 million BREEAM ‘Excellent’ scheme in 2010. Issues with the integrity of the roof had continually plagued the building with leaks, resulting in unsightly staining to the suspended ceilings within. Consequently, the decision was taken to overlay the existing single ply roofing membranes on levels 10, 4 and 3 with a cold-applied liquid system from Kemper System. Roofing contractor, Castle Roofing, was appointed to carry out the works and selected Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR as the most appropriate solution for the level 10 roof.

Explains Mark Atherton from Castle Roofing: “The level 10 roof is directly above occupied office areas and is also the location for the building’s air handling plant, so nuisance odours could potentially have been transferred into the office areas. “As a result, we chose to use Kemper System’s 2K-PUR system, which is solventfree and odourless, while still offering high performance and a BBA-accredited 25-year service life.” The level 4 roof is above the building’s record-breaking extra-long escalators and leaks from two water outlets had caused staining of the suspended ceiling. This roof was also refurbished as an overlay system, using Kemper System’s Kemperol V210. Having cleaned and prepared the existing roof surface, Castle Contractors applied a primer before applying the resin in a single wet-on-wet process in which the resin is first applied to the substrate; reinforcement fleece is then laid directly on to the wet resin, immediately followed by more resin on top.

This ensures complete saturation of the reinforcement fleece. Once cured, the resin forms a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate, is UV stable and bonds directly to the substrate. For the green roof on level 3, Castle Roofing carried out the refurbishment in two sections, removing half the green roof medium and installing Kemperol V210 onto to the existing surface as an overlay before replacing it and lifting the second section so that the new roofing membrane could be installed. The second section was then re-instated, completing the programme. Comments Jim Fozzard, building manager at Piccadilly Gate: “We needed a roofing system that could be installed quickly to prevent any further damage to the building’s interior, while minimising any disruption to occupiers and maintaining Piccadilly Gate’s high aesthetic standards. “Using Kemperol 2K-PUR on the level 10 roof meant that occupiers were not affected by any changes to air quality, while all three roofs have been overlaid using a seamless membrane without the use of hot works for a durable solution requiring no strip out.” www.kempersystem.co.uk

BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH IS THRILLED WITH KEMPER SYSTEM SOLUTION

Archetech - Page 136

Two of the popular rides at Blackpool Pleasure Beach have been upgraded to ensure they continue to thrill families of visitors for another generation thanks to Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing membrane. Opened in 2000 at a cost of £15 million, indoor log flume ‘Valhalla’ is one of the 120-yearold Pleasure Beach’s most popular rides, offering visitors a thrilling Viking-themed journey. The external façade features a ‘waterfall’ that dispenses 12,000 gallons of water per minute, splashing the covered waiting area below. It was this area of

the ride that was upgraded with an overlay of Kemperol V210, a cold liquid applied waterproofing system that bonds directly to the substrate and forms a reinforced monolithic membrane that cannot delaminate and offers a BBA-accredited service life of 25 years. Comments Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Construction Manager, Tim Currey: “The volume of water constantly pouring on the queue shelter roof for Valhalla is far in excess of what any roof would normally have to deal with, so it needed a robust waterproofing membrane with no vulnerable

seams and no risk of water penetration.” The Kemperol V210 cold liquid resin system was applied by roofing contractor, Castle Roofing, in a single wet-onwet process, applying resin immediately followed by a flexible reinforcement fleece and then more resin to ensure complete saturation of the fleece before the membrane was allowed to cure. The same system was used to overlay the roof of the theme park’s Alice in Wonderland family ride, which was originally constructed in the 1950s and was suffering water

ingress in some areas. Here, Castle Roofing cut out sections of the existing felt roof where it had split, filling these areas will a repair mortar made of Kemper System’s D Primer and quartz sand, before installing the Kemperol V210 system as an overlay. Tim adds: “The Kemperol V210 enabled the contractor to work on small sections of roof at a time and manage the programme around the operational demands of the business, while providing a robust, durable and flexible waterproofing solution.” www.kempersystem.co.uk

STELLAR SECURITY THAT WON’T COST THE EARTH By Jeremy Cassady, Managing Director of Securikey As part and parcel of managing the health and safety of any business and its employees, it is essential to conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential risks in the workplace and to implement the appropriate physical security measures. Priorities for protection should focus on: People (staff, visitors, contractors, customers), Physical Assets (buildings, contents, equipment) and Information (electronic and paper data). Leading manufacturers of security products, such as Securikey, offer many solutions to suit every company size and budget as well as offering long term functionality. Here are a few examples of how to keep employees and assets safe at a relatively low cost: Reflect and React

A popular and extremely cost-effective alternative to cameras is the convex mirror or safety mirror. Used extensively in a diverse range of environments, convex safety mirrors

When choosing a convex mirror, it is recommended that security personnel seek advice from organisations such as Secured By Design (SBD). SBD is the official UK Police flagship initiative whose objective is to ‘design out crime’ with approved physical security and

their principles have been proven to achieve a reduction of crime risk by up to 75%. With such a universal range of options available, business and workforce security needn’t cost the earth financially or environmentally and, in addition to offering high quality products to meet the security requirements of the business, a good supplier will also provide comprehensive advice from initial enquiry through to final installation, ensuring the ultimate protection for the company’s assets, premises and staff. In terms of security, prevention rather than reaction is key. CCTV (closed circuit television cameras) are commonly used both inside and outside of commercial buildings Although invaluable in some buildings, CCTV can be costly and is not always necessary.

are a highly effective way of eliminating blind spots inside and outside a building and can be useful in enhancing safety, security and operational efficiency as well as saving the business money on operational and energy costs. There are a number of options available such as interior, exterior, speciality and institution mirrors, each designed to meet specific requirements. Easy to maintain and with a low purchasing cost in comparison with more high tech alternatives, convex mirrors can also be useful in making staff more aware of their surroundings. Different convex mirrors have many different applications and it is essential that the correct mirror is chosen for an organisation’s needs. In addition, each mirror must be positioned to give the most comprehensive view and expert advice, as well as free guides, are available from leading suppliers to help the customer make an informed decision that will precisely meet requirements.

Searching for ‘Can Do’ Firms A name that seems to keep cropping up when we look for capable off-site manufacturer’s is Benfield ATT, so we thought we’d investigate them a little more. Apparently the firm was founded in 1995 to manufacture Swedish style timber frame houses for Scandia-Hus, having themselves been established to import and sell the products of their Scandinavian parent company in the early ‘70’s. The business had grown well, so when it faced an adverse exchange rate against the Krone, it was only logical to transfer the technology and the fabrication to the UK. The houses were not cheap, but the superior performance standards of the Scandinavian technology employed in their design, made their sustainable, low energy, air tight characteristics very popular with those that could afford it. Thus, the little company that was formed to replicate this was, arguably, one of the very first to promote these benefits throughout the UK.

Archetech - Page 138

It has to be remembered that it is only since that time that even the UK Building Regulations caught on to the improvements needed. While these have been progressively upgraded, they

remain woefully behind the northern European standards that the firm offered at that time. Although the gap has narrowed, it still maintains a lead having become increasingly focussed on delivering Low Energy Buildings since the recession. Initially known as AbbacHus, to capitalise on its technological superiority the firm soon changed its name to Advanced Timber Technologies (ATT). Additionally it began to offer Canadian style platform frame homes, competing with other UK firms to supplement and grow business from its base of replacing imported homes. This also meant offering 38x89 stud panels, rather than the 140 stud Scandinavian convention which are also its mainstay today. At that time UK Building Regulations enabled them to build 4 and more storey blocks of flats with such frames. In fact, in 2000 a unique demonstration building - Timber Frame 2000 (TF2000) – became one of the most significant research projects undertaken. This collaborative project involved the construction of a six storey, timber frame building – at that time the tallest of its type in the world – to show the commercial and technical benefits of using timber for medium rise buildings in the

Snohetta-isolated-cabin-Norway-Bjellandsbu-Akrafjorden (source Pinterest)

The TF2000 Building under construction

UK. Its success encouraged greater adoption of timber frame in construction. Today, solid and composite timber buildings of 11 stories have been built with 30 and more on international drawing boards. In 2002 ATT was acquired by a firm owned by leading environmentalist, Professor Dr. Michael Benfield, changing its name to Benfield ATT. As he explains “Applying Marshall McLuhan’s famous phrase, ‘The Medium is the Message’, it is absolutely clear that timber buildings have symbiotic relationship with nature. What better way, then, to promote the need for environmental sustainability than designing, making and building timber buildings.” To support this belief the firm was first in the sector to gain ISO quality, TRADA ‘Q Mark’, and FSC Chain of Custody certifications, bolstering this with HRH Prince Charles’ sponsored Business in the Community ‘Big Tick’ awards for 3 years in a row. With this ethic flowing through its corporate veins, it was not long before Benfield ATT were involved in commercial, educational, healthcare, leisure, and industrial projects using engineered timber structures. Besides flats and houses it gained a reputation for tackling some of the more intricate and difficult construction challenges – in timber! Examples of this are a dental and health clinic

created on a curve and balanced on a single row of piles to meet exacting ground and site conditions in Exeter, the complex curved glulam ‘Armadillo Shell’ roof for a visitor centre near Cardiff, a huge 30m span portal frame for a furniture factory in the wilds of Dorset, the UK’s first amphibious house in Marlow, and a circular crèche for an international ‘cherry picker’ manufacturer in Milton Keynes. As Prof.B (as he has become known) smilingly states, “The things other people shy away from are exactly what we like to get to exercise our skills, experience and capabilities. While we’re very happy to prefabricate and build ‘standard’ houses, if it’s ‘different’ it ‘gets our juices going’.” This ethos of doing different things, often differently, has spurred the firm’s development of traditional carpentry, modifying this to produce standardised feature roof trusses, ‘systemised’ post & beam structures, and the use of hybrid glulam ‘cross laminated’ timber for solid timber walls, floors and roofs of ‘interesting’ carbon neutral structures. As Porf.B concludes, “We like to work with people who have new ideas and who, like us, see timber as a key sustainable material in our quest to ‘save the planet’. It is, after all, the only renewable building material on earth.” www.benfieldattgroup.co.uk

Jackoboard awarded BBA Certificate for total system

Welsh Slate stars in a Landmark refurbishment

The innovative alternative to Georgian wired glass

TileBacker Limited is delighted to announce the award of a BBA (British Board of Agrement) Certificate for Jackoboard products and systems. British owned TileBacker Limited is the sole distributor of German anufactured Jackoboard products in the UK and Eire.

Natural Welsh slates have been used in the refurbishment of a historic house.

Ideal for listed buildings and heritage sites, Twinfix GW Polycarbonate™ cleverly combines the modern day benefits of solid polycarbonate with the traditional look of Georgian wired glass.

The Jackoboard BBA Certificate covers the full range of Jackoboard XPS (Extruded Polystyrene) cored products including construction boards, shower bases, and sealing systems – a rarity in this type of product. In addition, Jackoboard’s Certificate covers usage of the construction boards to achieve high thermal insulation values – again almost unique for this type of product.

Some 150m2 of Welsh Slate’s natural Cwt Y Bugail County-grade roof slates in various sizes have been used on the stables and Grade II* listed main house at Belmont House in the Conservation Area of Lyme Regis in Dorset.

Quite simply, it’s a 6mm thick dimpled surface solid polycarbonate glazing sheet that mimics the appearance of Georgian wired glass. The combination of its light weight of just 7.2kg/m², which is substantially less than the glass alternative, and impact resistance make it safer to transport and install than traditional Georgian wired glass. Being virtual unbreakable also negates future costly broken glazing replacement. It can withstand natural forces like severe wind, hail, and snow storms as well as building movement.
