CK ASSET ANNOUNCES SALES LAUNCH OF POWERHOUSE AN EXCLUSIVE RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS WITHIN THE HISTORIC WALLS OF LONDON’S LAST GREAT INDUSTRIAL ICON CK Asset Holdings Limited (“CK Asset”) has announced the sales launch of Powerhouse at Chelsea Waterfront, SW10 0QD. The iconic Lots Road Power Station which had powered the London Underground for over a century has been transformed into an exceptionally rare collection of 260 apartments – the Powerhouse. When fully completed, this post-modernist masterpiece with a hallowed history will enjoy a resplendent future as London’s most refined and exclusive residential address overlooking the River Thames. Once the driving force behind the rapid expansion of modern London, Lots Road Power Station generated electricity to keep citizens on the move during the Blitz of the Second World War. The repurposing of the Power Station and the delivery of Chelsea

Waterfront represent the most dramatic transformation in the borough in living memory. A triumph of engineering built on a scale never seen before, Powerhouse was the first of the city’s three great power stations built over a century ago and the last being redeveloped. The other two are Battersea, and Bankside (which is now better known as the Tate Modern, one of London’s premier tourist destinations). Dr Edmond Ho, Director & General Manager of Hutchison Property Group (UK) Limited, said: “This latest project being unveiled at Chelsea Waterfront - Powerhouse - is an iconic London landmark and a cathedral of the industrial age which has been rejuvenated by a world-class team of architects and designers. Taking on a revolutionary new form, Powerhouse will offer a 21st century living experience like no other in one of London’s most coveted boroughs.”

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

Taking on a revolutionary new form, Powerhouse will offer a 21st century living experience like no other in one of London’s most coveted boroughs. The largest power station ever constructed, with chimneys soaring 275 feet high above the River Thames, Lots Road Power Station was completed in 1905 as the first steel-framed building in the British Isles, often described as the “design grandfather” of Battersea Power Station. Today, a team of architects led by Sir Terry Farrell has restored the historic red brick walls whilst its interiors have been re-designed as lavish living spaces by the award-winning Fiona Barratt Interiors. Meticulously chosen for their reputation for incorporating historical design features and references to create modern signature residences, Fiona Barratt Interiors honours the Power Station’s rich industrial heritage and preserves its place in architectural lore. Combining modern elements with unique points of historical interest, full-height evergreen trees have been purposefully placed where the building’s turbines once stood, whilst flowing water troughs echo the creation of steam and two industrial chimneys anchor at either end of the space. Powerhouse’s entrance also boasts a spectacular ‘electric current’ lighting installation - framed by the building’s vast elegant arched windows - representing the original purpose of the building: the generation of power. Boasting a multitude of state-of-the-art amenities, Powerhouse will be professionally managed by Rendall and Rittner concierge with 5-star services around the clock, from general house management to individual booking requests. The exclusive health and fitness centre, housing a luxurious spa, a fully equipped gym, and a 20-metre swimming pool, offers a private sanctuary for exercise and relaxation. The elegantly appointed Residents’ Club Lounge

with its delightful views of the river is the ideal multi-purpose space for work or social gatherings. For those seeking superb cuisine served in stylish surroundings, the restaurants at Chelsea Waterfront which boast unforgettable vistas across the river, and the beautifully lit landscaped gardens will be the first port of call.

CHELSEA WATERFRONT Chelsea Waterfront, designed by internationally renowned architect Sir Terry Farrell, overlooks a part of the River Thames that was previously inaccessible. The luxury development comprises 10 buildings set across 8.85 acres which, in addition to Powerhouse, also includes Tower West, a 37-storey tower, the tallest residential

building in SW10 and Tower East a 25-storey tower, as well as the Rotunda. Powerhouse is situated across the bridge from the gardens at Chelsea Waterfront which have been thoughtfully crafted by leading landscape architect Randle Siddeley to create an oasis of nature with breathtaking views along the river to Battersea and Chelsea Bridge.

STRONG CONNECTIVITY Located in an intimate enclave at the heart of London’s most distinguished and elegant Royal Borough, Chelsea Waterfront is situated less than a 5-minute walk from Imperial Wharf Station for direct access to Central London, while nearby Chelsea Harbour Pier provides riverboat services on The Thames Clipper. Lots Road and the iconic Kings Road area represent one of the finest of dining, shopping and culture destinations that London has to offer. Within the immediate vicinity, residents can enjoy a diverse selection of Michelin-starred restaurants, antique shops, luxury concept stores and exquisite cafés, such as Medlar, Bluebird Chelsea, and John Nicolas Antiques to name but a few. Two to four bedroom apartments at Powerhouse start from £1,700,000 www.ckah.com/eng

Designers need to be aware of how significantly insulation values can be compromised by thermal bridges, which occur in a localised area of the building envelope – typically where a material with high thermal conductivity penetrates the insulation layer. Critical examples are cantilevered balconies, which result in higher heat transfer through the building assembly and colder surface temperatures on the warm side. The main consequences being non-compliance with regulations, condensation leading to mould growth and higher energy consumption for heating. The 2021 edition of Part L (which replaces L1A 2013) sets out the minimum thermal requirements for avoiding such issues. IMPORTANT NEW REQUIREMENTS Thermal bridging must now be included in fabric heat loss calculations and the Standard Assessment Procedure calculation (updated to SAP 10.2) includes the term HTB (heat loss due to thermal bridging). A further change is that for new dwellings, an on-site audit must confirm that the details shown in the original design have been constructed, before they are concealed by subsequent work. Photographic verification must show that the products used are those in the original design. If there are substitutions, the revised specification should be reflected in the SAP calculation and included in the Building Regulations England Part L compliance report (BREL report). The revised Part L also includes general tightening of U-values, requiring greater insulation requirements and better performing thermal break details. Additionally, it encourages HTB assessment to be carried out through thermal calculation for a more realistic evaluation

of existing thermal junctions. The default y-value has been

With thermal bridging cold surfaces can form condensation, resulting in structural damage – and of even bigger concern – mould growth. To identify areas where there is a risk of condensation and therefore mould growth, a ‘surface temperature factor’ (fRsi) should be used. It allows surveys under any thermal conditions and compares the temperature drop across the building fabric with the total temperature drop between the inside and outside air. The recommended (fRsi) value for offices and retail premises is equal to or greater than 0.5; and to ensure higher standards for occupants in residential buildings, equal to or greater than 0.75.

increased to 0.20 W/(m2.K) to discourage generic estimations. THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY Designers do need to be fully aware of just how significantly thermal bridges compromise insulation and the most effective way to minimise thermal bridging at cantilever balcony detailing is to incorporate a Schöck structural thermal break. This is a highly efficient balcony connector that minimises the flow of thermal energy between the interior and exterior of a building, providing both structural integrity and thermal isolation of the balcony. The Schöck range of thermal break solutions is for applications as diverse as concrete-to-concrete; concrete-tosteel; steel-to-steel; renovation projects – and even Passivhaus.

EDUCATIONAL NORDIC COPPER THE ARCHITECTURAL CLARITY OF A NEW TEACHING FACILITY AT GRESHAM’S SCHOOL IN NORFOLK – INCORPORATING PANELS OF NORDIC BROWN LIGHT PRE-OXIDISED COPPER ALONGSIDE FULL-HEIGHT GLAZING – TYPIFIES AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO EDUCATION Enabled by Sir James Dyson, a former pupil at the school, the centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education is a state-of-the-art structure at the heart of the School campus. WilkinsonEyre’s design develops and refines the evolving STEAM building typology, and follows a modern aesthetic integrating industrial components with landscaping and low energy systems.

OPAQUE & PERFORATED PANELS The two-storey exposed steel frame envelopes a mixture of large panels: some glass and others Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper – either opaque or with square perforations adding transparency whilst screening glazing behind. Some of the panels are set back within the structure, introducing landscaped open areas which can be used for outside teaching. Integrated planting blurs the boundaries between outside and in. The thoroughly modern building remains sympathetic to its historic context and its scale reflects that of the 1916 school chapel across the lawn. Meanwhile, the patterns in the Nordic Brown Light copper panels mirror decorative flint details on the chapel elevation.

BUILDING AS A TEACHING TOOL Yasmin Al-Ani Spence, Director at WilkinsonEyre, said: “This building will provide contemporary teaching spaces for the investigation of the sciences and the arts simultaneously, enhancing critical thinking and promoting innovation. The building itself – through the clarity and honesty of design and construction - becomes a teaching tool in its own right.” With an area totalling 4000m², teaching spaces are generous and filled with light. They include classrooms, laboratories, workshops,

an auditorium and open-plan common spaces able to host a variety of teaching and learning uses. An inviting and interactive internal courtyard, doubling up as circulation, features an arts hub, seating area, and IT point and facilities, further reinforcing the integration of art, design, and science. The building is equipped with the latest technology to ensure the highest levels of teaching, from robotics and Artificial Intelligence to programming and machine learning. The building will also provide greatly improved opportunities for the outreach programme which Gresham’s runs with local schools.

PERFORMANCE & APPEARANCE NATURALLY Nordic Brown copper provides the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. The thickness of the oxide layer determines the colour of the surface finish with dark or the lighter ‘Nordic Brown Light’ shades of brown.

TPS360 has provided a total project solution, including a class-leading resin floor, for a redeveloped recycling and waste management facility near Cardiff. Operated by Viridor, Cardiff Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is the largest of its kind in Wales and treats waste from the local authority and local business contracts. The facility, which has been operational since 2014, handles around 350,000 tonnes of residual, non-recyclable waste each year. The challenge on this particular project was to provide a hardwearing finish for a demanding and potentially hazardous, live environment where 50 tonne front loaders and other heavy plant equipment are operated. The work also had to be scheduled in such a way that the facility could maintain 24-hour operation without any downtime. It was once again TPS360’s experience and excellent project portfolio which opened the door for them on this project. The company worked closely with the client from an early stage, installing test samples and carrying out trials to ensure the best resin specification. For further information visit www.tps360.co.uk

A HEALING ENVIRONMENT THE INTEGRATED CANCER TREATMENT CENTRE OF THE CHU DE QUÉBEC-UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL The integrated cancer treatment centre (centre intégré de cancérologie – CIC) is a major step forward in the construction of the new hospital complex of the Quebec City-Laval University hospital centre (CHU de Québec-Université Laval) on the Hôpital de l’Enfant-Jésus campus in Quebec City. It includes all specialties and the latest technologies for the treatment of cancer. The starting point for the architectural development of the CIC was the design of a green inner courtyard, surrounded by the oncology program. The aim was to provide pleasant reception areas, waiting rooms, traffic zones, care facilities and work areas that promote health and healing. An abundance of natural light, outdoor views, green spaces, warm materials and colours, and art characterize this calming new healthcare space, which offers the best practices and the latest technology.

CLINICAL PROGRAM AND DESIGN With 32,230 m² of floorspace, the CIC is Quebec’s largest cancer treatment centre and one of the largest in Canada. It is home to a technologically advanced program that delivers a wide range of specialized and overspecialized services and treatments to cancer patients. The facility includes a radio-oncology department (teletherapy and brachytherapy); consultation rooms organized into clinics based on the tumour site; a chemotherapy ward capable of treating up to 70 patients simultaneously; an oncological pharmacy; a rapid-response oncology treatment department (SIRO); a treatment planning and simulation department; a medical physics lab; and several support offices for patients and staff. In order to integrate oncology research activities and bring them closer to medical realities, the CIC has spaces dedicated to research, innovation and teaching and will be connected to the future basic research centre. Two clinical research areas are located on the second and fourth floors, where they will intersect with the future research centre, and other offices are integrated with the consultation clinics to facilitate patients’ participation in research protocols. The facility’s specialized elements include radiosurgery and adaptive radiotherapy, radiotherapy by orthovoltage and the careful integration of numerous cutting-edge medical devices: linear accelerators, magnetic resonance imaging scanners (MRI), a linear accelerator system with onboard MRI scanner (MRI-LINAC), CT scanners and positron emission tomography scanners (PET/CT). The north side of the building consists of a podium for teletherapy, with bunkers on the ground floor and electromechanical services on the second. In the centre, a transversal, 6-level volume, which will be connected to the future basic research centre, contains brachytherapy rooms and research labs on the garden (basement) level, further teletherapy spaces on the ground floor and consultation clinics on the next three levels, with the top floor reserved for electromechanical services. On the south side, four levels surround the inner courtyard. This is where part of the

ARCHETECH - PAGE 32

medical physics laboratory is located, along with a cyclotron, a future research imaging space and a teaching area at garden level. The rest of the medical physics centre and the treatment planning and simulation department are situated on the ground floor, under two floors dedicated to chemotherapy, with the oncological pharmacy on the second floor and the rapid-response treatment department on the third. This part of the complex was designed to accommodate two additional floors if a future expansion is needed. The consultation clinics were designed to ensure patients’ privacy, offer greater flexibility in their use and maximize staff efficiency. To enable a separation of public and private traffic flows, the examination rooms have double doors and are arranged around an interdisciplinary workspace reserved for medical staff. Thus, patients access the examination rooms through a public hallway, while staff members reach them via the central workspace. To give patients more privacy, the chemotherapy ward is divided into six clusters of a dozen rooms arranged around a guard post. In each cluster, chairs are placed along the outside walls to allow patients to take advantage of natural light and views of the outside and rooftop gardens, while a closed room with gurneys is located next to the guard post. The oncological pharmacy is adjacent to the chemotherapy ward in order to facilitate medication supply, while the SIRO – where patients needing urgent oncological intervention are treated – is located on the third floor near a set of six gurneys reserved for apheresis treatments.

CONTEXT AND ARCHITECTURAL INTEGRATION A major component of the new hospital complex was the requirement that the CIC had to be integrated into the existing hospital complex and its urban context with a comprehensive architectural vision. The centre was built near the edge of the site to offer patients as much privacy as possible. Its volumes were

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS her first oncology-related project: she has worked on more than 20 projects over the course of her career, including seven major integrated cancer treatment centres. She adds that “the concept of the healing garden is not new, and we have been working toward perfecting it for 20 years, adapting it to the context and scale of each project.” As well as contributing to the creation of a healing environment by providing soothing views to patients at different stages of care – in particular to chemotherapy patients, whose treatments take several hours – the courtyard gardens and green rooftops provide several environmental benefits.

Vegetation planted on rooftops provides excellent ecological services: it helps protect biodiversity, mitigates noise and heat islands, retains rainwater, improves air quality and captures greenhouse gases.

In its relation to the research centre and critical care wing, currently under construction, the CIC also includes a glassed-in hallway on its façade to ensure a supply of natural light to the courtyard. Based on the guiding idea of “gardens for all,” people benefit on one side from a view of the courtyard and on the other of a future garden that will be built in front of the CIC, on the Henri-Bourassa Blvd. side.

ART INTEGRATED WITH ARCHITECTURE Within the framework of the Politique d’intégration des arts à l’architecture et à l’environnement des bâtiments et des sites gouvernementaux et publics (policy for the integration of the arts into the architecture and environment of government and publicsector sites and buildings), strategic locations were identified to ensure that as many people as possible would benefit from exposure to art and so that the art would function as privacy screens for patients undergoing treatment. “Everyone, whether they have expertise in art or not, can appreciate the benefits of art in their life. These pieces also serve as landmarks, helping people get their bearings and find their way around more easily,” said Raynald St-Hilaire, associate architect at Lemay and lead designer of the new hospital complex. Three artists from Quebec were invited to beautify the CIC’s care areas. Based on the wishes of the members of the selection committee, the artwork to be created for the inner courtyard had to be approximately 12 metres tall so that as many patients as possible can see it from every treatment floor. Accordingly, artist Patrick Beaulieu proposed an immense bronze sculpture of conifer trees, Éclaircie, in which a myriad of gold-tinted aluminum clusters recall bright sunbeams in a forest clearing. “The work evokes the regeneration of vegetation through light – photosynthesis – and thus of all life on Earth. From the courtyard, the patio and the green rooftop, we discover the temporal thread inherent to the work, which takes us from seed to tree and from root to crown, to the life force, the regenerative energy that converges to nurture life.” Inside, a series of works by Ivan Binet called Échos – Passages, Vases-montagnes et Écho du ciel was carefully positioned on three levels at the intersection of the CIC and the future research centre, so that the work can be seen by as many people as possible. Exploring the concept of landscape, these large inkjet prints on backlit tempered glass are panoramic images of the natural landscapes of eastern Quebec – the regions served by the CIC. Two screen works, La valse des fleurs by Émilie Rondeau, are placed outside, facing the glassed-in ground-floor treatment rooms. They provide necessary privacy, while still letting light through for the benefit of patients and care staff. “The composition evokes resilience and hope. The pieces are arranged in successive waves and undulations that form a path lined with reassurance, generosity and renewal.”

ARCHITECTURE AND TECHNOLOGY The core issue when designing a centre of this type is to have a thorough understanding of the medical technologies used and the requirements of specialized devices, so that all spaces are highly functional, safe and pleasant for patients and staff. Each sector has its own complexities. In radiotherapy, for example, shielded walls must be built to contain the radiation. In every sector where radioactive or hazardous materials are used, the spaces must be judiciously designed to avoid any and all contamination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are sensitive and can easily be disrupted by automobile traffic or magnetic fields from other devices, so their placement must be carefully considered. All of these constraints add complexity to the architectural design process, which can sometimes become a real puzzle. They require large numbers of specialized contributors, each with a different piece of the puzzle.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT The project meets all technical requirements established by the SQI for hospital projects of this scale: optimization of energy consumption, use of materials low in VOCs and/or with recycled content, and improvements in the implementation of electromechanical systems and the building envelope. The CIC is notable for the inclusion of numerous green spaces, which have benefits for both people and the environment. For example, the rooftop gardens act as thermal insulators and extend the lifespan of roofs by protecting membranes from thermal shock and ultraviolet light. While their initial cost is higher than conventional

a centre of this size and its connections to other parts of the new hospital complex required both expertise in specialized disciplines and the agility needed to design extremely high-quality architecture

Several other architectural decisions contributed to the creation of a high-quality healing environment and the building’s energy efficiency, such as the creation of the inner courtyard, which maximizes the number of spaces with access to natural light; the

application of a silkscreen to windows, which exploits changing light over the course of the day to recreate conditions similar to those found in nature; and the presence of a large central stairway that encourages active movement and reduces elevator traffic.

A COMPLEX PROJECT “One of the biggest challenges in designing the largest cancer treatment centre in Quebec was certainly the construction context. A very large team that included some 50 architectural professionals had to work together effectively to reach a common goal,” said Anne-Marie Blais, an architect and partner with Groupe A/Annexe U and assistant project manager for the new hospital complex. Working with the institution, project manager, engineering team and numerous specialized consultants, the project was run in accelerated mode in order to meet the delivery deadline, determined by clinical requirements. “Accelerated mode requires a great deal of agility among the teams, given the overlap between the design and construction phases.” The project team not only met the challenge of designing the new specialized centre, it also laid the foundations for the subsequent design of all the other clinical buildings in the new hospital complex. The implementation of the BIM (Building Information Modelling) process and its tools from the first sketches onward contributed significantly to the optimization of the consultation workshops with clinicians and the efficient development of plans and specifications for the construction phase.

Group and a leading designer and manufacturer of pumps, macerators and lifting stations – recently helped London landmark the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the iconic Southbank Centre improve its WC facilities. Previously, the WCs for the venue’s roof garden and café overlooking the Thames were located in the Centre’s main building, which meant staff and visitors had to treck up and down a winding staircase. Richard Riley from building contractor Eleven London constructed a wooden toilet block with two separate WCs and hand basins. With no gravity drainage available in proximity of the new block, a pumping solution was the only solution to discharge the waste away to the nearest soil stack some 40m away. The Saniflo technical team assessed the site and the potential run of pipework, and specified a Sanicubic Pro 2 lifting station with twin pumps and a wireless alarm, which Richard and his plumber installed. This powerful unit uses alternate pumps when operating normally, but in the unlikely event of a pump failure can switch to NEOLITH

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

ESPACE MAYENNE HÉRAULT ARNOD ARCHITECTURES Espace Mayenne is a multifunctional facility including a large sports and entertainment venue with a capacity of 4,500, a gymnasium with a climbing wall for international competitions, and a conference hall. In addition to these three main venues can be found other spaces, such as partner lounges designed as modular rooms to receive guests during games or shows, as well as offices and cloakrooms for artists and sportsmen. Outside the building, the project is completed by a 670-space parking lot, a landscaped area, and a 250-meter-long cycling ring for national competitions integrating a training track in its center.

THE SITE Espace Mayenne is located in a former military site bordering the French city of Laval, along the D900 urban ring road. The project began with an urban and landscape study aiming to define guidelines for the future development of this site in accordance with the framework of the Ferrié new neighborhood. This is an area undergoing change, crucial to the dynamic revitalization of the city. The building’s organization respects the landscape structure and the memory of the site, combining ecology, compactness, economy of means, and the creation of a mass plan saving parcels for future programs. The landscape heritage of the site is remarkable. It is

ARCHETECH - PAGE 40

composed of a natural area - marshes, woodlands, and wet meadow - and an old bocage grid with sculptural trees and sunken lanes, which are all entirely preserved. An east-west pedestrian-bicycle path is created to structure the site, crossing the public parking lot and the wetland, before widening itself in front of the building into an entrance piazza.

THE BUILDING To participate in the economy of soils and shape optimization, the building is a unitary volume that envelops the three venues in one movement. The organic aspect of the building stems from its conception. It is less of a design gesture than the consequence of a process that articulates the three halls on a singular landscape. The façade is like a skin wrapping itself around the rooms, resulting in a shifting shape that constantly changes depending on the viewpoint. It is composed of three horizontally stacked stripes that deform themselves in order to envelop the volumes as tightly as possible. These three ribbons overlap and rotate around the building, generating fluidity, unity, and movement. Together, they create a flexible plane covering the entire height of the building and sometimes elevating itself in certain points in order to uncover glazed façades. Its complex form is subdivided into simple, identical

The design of the convertible grand hall is induced by its need for versatility as it must be functional for shows, concerts as well as for sports games.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS as for sports games. While sports events require an arena system where the spectators are sitting all around the field, concerts and shows require a frontal system with a stage. The room is asymmetrical with a large balcony on one side, which allows the installation of a stage on the long north side, therefore reducing the distance between the performers and the public. Diagonal curtains can be drawn to transform the arena configuration into a trapezium that flares out starting from the stage frame. In the sports events’ configuration, the field is closely surrounded by an arena of bleachers. The technical treatment of this hall has been thought out so that it can be quickly converted from one configuration to another: the space is completely transformed according to the program. The design of the walls, alternating between raw white concrete and wool felt, was elaborated in collaboration with acousticians. Areas of sound absorption, reverberation, or a mix of both were defined: corrugated raw concrete to distribute the sound in the space, strips of concrete alternating with strips of wool felt for the mixed areas, wool felt stretched with an acoustic mat for the absorbing zones, behind the bleachers. Suspended panels of wool felt were designed for the ceiling, creating an aerial geometric pattern. A vast technical grid

Satellite finishes have a distinctive iridescent gleam with layered metallic and pearlescent effects and a depth of colour unrivalled in a one-coat application. The name ‘Satellite’ occurred to Powdertech as soon as the team saw the initial samples. The mid-sheen finish with vibrant flashes of light set in a rich colour is intense, “Like a million satellites in the sky,” said Richard Besant, Powdertech Director. The individual names are taken from the hundreds of manmade satellites that orbit the Earth. Achieving colours with depth and lustre was the key objective.

Architectural, the metal mesh specialist, is particularly pleased with the effect that Satellite finishes have on its profiled sheet and metal mesh where the undulating surface is enhanced as light bounces off the glittering finish. Satellite finishes conform to BS EN 12206-1 standards and Qualicoat specifications. With excellent durability and colour stability they are suitable for internal and external applications.

UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS SPARANO + MOONEY ARCHITECTURE DESIGNS STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDINGS FOR UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY’S FINE ARTS CAMPUS The award-winning practice, known for creating sustainable and thoughtful architecture within the American West, has completed three notable buildings on the Utah State University Campus, with another signature building set to open in 2025.

Hatje Cantz and available in August 2022, highlights the dialogue between concept and location found in their work, as well as their commitment to sustainable and innovative buildings that are embedded harmoniously into spectacular mountain landscapes.

As one of Utah’s leading architecture firms, Sparano + Mooney Architecture is sought after for its limitless exploration and deep commitment to the design process, which has resulted in thoughtfully innovative and award-winning contemporary design solutions within the American West.

The firm’s long-standing work at Utah State University in Logan, UT has resulted in significant expansions, renovations, and new construction of three state-of-the-art buildings for the school’s Fine Arts Campus: Sid Perkes Theatrical Design Complex, Daines Concert Hall, and the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA). The newest building, the Art Research & Education Center at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, is anticipated to open in 2025 and will be located adjacent to NEHMA. Though completed over many years, the work collectively shares a commitment to restrained forms and innovative material detailing that responds both to the campus’ natural surroundings and the unique relationships between each building.

For founders, Anne Mooney, AIA, and John Sparano, FAIA, a shared passion for designing within the rugged Western landscape has resulted in works across extreme topographies, as well as multiple sectors, most notably landmark designs for arts and cultural facilities. In celebration of their portfolio, the firm’s forthcoming monograph Sparano + Mooney Architecture, A Way of Working, published by

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

Our team has been honored to collaborate with the University on the renovations and additions to their Fine Arts complex for nearly a decade “Our team has been honored to collaborate with the University on the renovations and additions to their Fine Arts complex for nearly a decade,” says Anne Mooney. “We now look forward to developing a new, state-of-the-art educational facility that will allow an extraordinary collection of artworks to be accessible to researchers, faculty, students, and to the wider community.”

NORA ECCLES HARRISON MUSEUM OF ART (NEHMA) The original Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) building was designed by American architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and completed in 1982 as an expansion of the larger Fine Arts Center on the campus of Utah State University (USU). Sparano + Mooney Architecture’s design of the museum’s new addition is a quietly restrained form that does not compete with nor mimic the existing museum nor the adjacent signature building, a 2006 Sasaki-designed Performing Arts Center. Rather the addition creates a new public plaza that connects the two buildings in a neutral response to a visually complex context.

DAINES CONCERT HALL The Newel and Jean Daines Concert Hall project includes the complete renovation of the former Kent Concert Hall to create a new state-of-the-art space for orchestra, band, and choral

theatrical, audio, and lighting equipment to enhance the acoustic performance of the venue for both performers and audiences. The new concert hall serves audiences throughout the region with world-class music and programming in a newly renovated and state-of-the-art cultural facility.

SID PERKES THEATRICAL DESIGN COMPLEX Part of the Utah State University Department of Theatre Arts and the Caine College of the Arts, this project includes the expansion and renovation of the existing Scene and Costume Shops, which support the Morgan Theatre and other local theatrical venues. The new 8,000-square-foot addition by Sparano + Mooney Architecture provides the necessary tooling, layout, equipment, and storage space for the design and construction of theatrical scenery, including a new paint booth and dust evacuation system. The upper level of the facility provides new work and teaching space for theatrical costume production, including new sewing stations, layout and work tables, fabric storage, fitting rooms, a dye vat, laundry facilities, and faculty offices.

ART RESEARCH & EDUCATION CENTER AT NEHMA Anticipated to open summer or fall 2025, the newest campus work will be adjacent to the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art and accommodate 40% more collection storage for the museum. According to Executive Director & Chief Curator, Katie Lee Koven, one of the important goals for the building is to accommodate the museum’s growing collection and support its 21st-century learning needs by creating learning spaces that are more engaged. Rather than act as additional gallery space, the new building will have a visible storage area that showcases a more accessible experience of stored museum items. Visitors will also be able to see how the museum cares for and stores objects, will allow them to search the database, and open drawers in an effort to engage with and learn about art in a more personal, explorative way.

This instagrammers’ paradise has a real contemporary feel that manages to retain its past strong heritage whilst making it suitable for today’s modern lifestyle. Inside is exposed brickwork and cast iron columns with large open cloister living areas providing dual aspect views through the George Barnsdale black/grey timber casement windows. Outside, cast iron fire escapes and hoists have been restored and retained. The building also features matching smaller square pivot windows which have flush fitting hinges providing 180 degree rotation, allowing the easy cleaning

DOORS, WINDOWS & FITTINGS

Being bespoke with high levels of customisation, our pivot windows are ideal for projects with irregular shapes like Minto & Turner of the external glass and frame to be cleaned from inside, making the window particularly suited to buildings like this one. With multipoint locking distributed around the frame, security is excellent. They are extremely robust, Barnsdale’s pivot windows can support a range of shapes and sizes where it is possible to have a single sash measuring up to 23 X2.2m and weighing up to 200kg. Steve Dixon, Director at George Barnsdale said “Being bespoke with high levels of customisation, our pivot windows are ideal for projects with irregular shapes like Minto & Turner.” Contemporary style timber doors in matching grey/black (RAL 7021) were also supplied providing residents with great views and access to the street scene and canalside bars below. Having worked with George Barnsdale on its Nottingham Axis project, a conversion of the old Co-operative building, Henry Boot Development was no stranger to the Lincolnshire joinery manufacturer high performance timber fenestration in the UK. A mix of timber flush casement windows, pivot windows and timber doorsets were designed to incorporate high acoustic and thermal performance to ensure the perfect living conditions inside the building. Part of the aesthetic on the canal side elevation includes the use of louvres for privacy and to maintain the industrial feel. These were designed and manufactured at George Barnsdale’s Lincolnshire site where all their products are manufactured.

There is also some nice arched work at the courtyard end of the building with a large door opening out onto the bars and cafes adjacent. In addition to the manufacture of the bespoke timber windows, doors and louvres, George Barnsdale also provided ongoing site surveying and project management as well as full installation using interface drawings to ensure the perfect fit, taking into account the wonky openings typical of a project like this. www.georgebarnsdale.co.uk 01775 823000

SPECIFYING ESSENTIAL IRONMONGERY FOR FIRE DOORS MIKE SUTCLIFFE, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER OF VANQUISH HARDWARE PROTECTION, DISCUSSES WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE SPECIFICATION OF ESSENTIAL IRONMONGERY FOR FIRE DOORS Architectural hardware is specified based on three main principles – the type of building, the building design, and the type of finish that is required to complement the design and period of the property. This applies to all doors within a building, including fire doors. A fire door should be designed to fit in with the building design and the fixtures should match with the rest of the doors. There is one critical difference, though – all essential hardware fitted to a fire door must be CE/UKCA marked and been tested to a relevant British or European standard such as BS 476:22 or EN 1634-1. Fire door testing must be carried out at a UKAS accredited laboratory in which the entire doorset, including essential hardware, is subject to specific burning conditions on a full-scale furnace. This essential hardware plays a vital role in the performance of the fire door to prevent the spread of flames and heat to adjacent rooms.

It is imperative that installers check any test evidence or certification to understand what type and quantity of intumescent is necessary to be compliant.

When essential hardware is morticed into timber fire resistant doorsets, the integrity is compromised as the insulating timber is replaced with metallic components which are excellent heat conductors. Intumescent protection provides additional insulation around metallic components and helps to resist the transfer of heat from one side of the door to the other by expanding upon exposure to heat, creating an insulating foam and sealing any voids created from the rebating process. However, few people understand the differences between intumescent materials and currently there is no internationally recognised standard for intumescent hardware protection products.

It is also possible for intumescent materials to be swapped out to other brands if they are the same thickness and material type, but it must not be assumed that each brand of graphite-based intumescent is interchangeable. This is because graphite-based intumescent can contain varying quantities and grades of intercalated graphite and expansion ratios and activation temperatures vary between compounds. It is also unlikely that manufacturers will disclose how much graphite is in their products which makes comparing materials difficult without a side-by-side test. It is imperative that installers check any test evidence or certification to understand what type and quantity of intumescent is necessary to be compliant. It is also recommended to only use intumescent that has been independently assessed by a third party which ensures the products have been tested to the relevant standards and the manufacturer has quality management systems in place to ensure a consistent product. ROCKET LAUNCH ULTRA – THE “4-WAY” FLUSH DOOR SYSTEM Rocket Door Frames have launched a brand new innovative flush door system in the UK that has distinct advantages over it’s predecessor, advantages for the architect, developer and contractor. The evolution of the Flush Door design has been prolific throughout Europe over recent years. The design concept of a door without architraves that blends into any interior design has been appreciated by Interior designers everywhere. Initially the design emanated from Italy but has since become the biggest growth sector in the door market. Rocket Door Frames have been at the forefront of this, supplying Flush Door Frames for some years now. Similar to other suppliers in the market Rockets’ design meant having to specify either Push or Pull and either Left or Right opening meaning 4 products, each one specific without any flexibility to change. During this time Rocket have developed the new UTRA Flush Door system that combines

ESPERANZA HEALTH CENTER FORWARD THINKING DESIGN Esperanza Health Centers is a community health system whose mission is to promote healthy lifestyles and improve health status through the provision of high-quality care and wellness services. Emphasizing prevention and education, services are provided by a bilingual and culturally diverse staff dedicated to overcoming the barriers faced by underserved communities. Esperanza—meaning hope in Spanish—is living up to its name. Esperanza envisions a world where community residents will be served regardless of immigration status, race/ethnicity, income, or insurance coverage, and will be able to realize their full potential through optimum health. Therefore, this new facility materializes the client’s mission and vision.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

Community interaction is first and foremost in the new building, and the ground floor has been designed to liberate the typical definitions of interior and exterior.

Understanding that health is a combination of physical, mental, and spiritual balance, the new Esperanza Health Center focuses on creating spaces for healing and wholeness. It is the building that this community needs to heal, flourish, and feel supported. JGMA designed a fully accessible building that is a contemporary community health center, providing critical services that are currently lacking in this southwest area of Chicago. By teaming up with local specialty care and community-based organizations, the new facility will house comprehensive healthcare services, and utilizes forward-thinking design to attract and unite the surrounding community. The brownfield site was transformed from an unyielding concrete slab into a new clinic with outdoor walking and community garden spaces, and a paved vehicular lot. Community interaction is first and foremost in the new building, and the ground floor has been designed to liberate the typical definitions of interior and exterior.

MAGPLY GAINS COVETED BBA CERTIFICATION Magply magnesium oxysulfate (MOS) boards have recently undergone a stringent testing programme by the British Board of Agrément (BBA), which helps clients validate their processes and mitigate risk offering greater confidence for specifiers of the products tested. After a painstaking two year process, Magply’s faith in the multipurpose panel was justified by the BBA’s issue of a muchcoveted Agrément certificate no. 22/6050. Stages involved the BBA carrying out a full audit of Magply’s existing testing regime – along with undergoing a number of the authority’s own rigorous trials. These included a six-month evaluation of the board for leeching, which thanks to the material’s inherent stability resulted in a zero score. The different construction industry applications for Magply boards which the BBA assessed included: • Backer board for proprietary render systems • Rainscreen • Timber frame construction • SFS construction • Spandrel panels • Fire protection • Sheathing

Regulations, independently verified technical specification, regular surveillance of the production process and verifying installation guidance. Behaviour in relation to fire, moisture resistance and durability were also assessed. The new BBA certification offers further potential opportunities for the use of Magply though, primarily, it provides the specifier full confidence in the board having approval across multiple applications, from the industry’s principle assessor. For further information, please contact:

The certification – now published – comes in two parts: the first covering the board as a sheathing solution, the other when Magply is used in rainscreen cladding with a render finish. These in turn cover considerations such as Magply’s compliance with Building

DANDI WEMBLEY REDEFINING CITY LIVING Dandi Webley is redefining city living by delivering an elevated new standard of rental design reminiscent of a luxury hotel, in the heart of one of London’s most creative neighbourhoods. The design-led scheme offers adaptable studio and 1-bedroom apartments with innovative space management solutions, that cleverly allow each home to be configured into five different modalities throughout the day: sleep, exercise, work, eat and play. Whilst simultaneously placing a huge amount of importance on quality finishes and beautiful living spaces, Dandi is leading the charge in showcasing that renters can now demand quality of living in central London. A completely unique offering, founded by industry thought leader Ali Ravanshad, Dandi Wembley shows that access to the highest quality, design-led, living in London is possible.

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS

Dandi Wembley shows that access to the highest quality, design-led, living in London is possible. The residences not only come fully furnished with the mod-cons you would expect to find in a luxury apartment, such as 50-inch flat screen TVs and air purifying systems, but also incorporate a series of bespoke furnishings, designed in-house by Dandi, that make this development so unique. From floating beds that lift to the ceiling and modular sofas that can be transformed to dining chairs, to pull-out breakfast bars and concealed kitchen cabinets, the apartments are ingeniously designed to evolve around the resident, making cutting edge design more widely accessible. Seamlessly designed in both form and function, the bespoke furniture is created by Dandi’s in-house design team and manufactured at the vertically integrated Dandi facilities in West London. The pieces allow the apartments’ function to adapt to optimise space without compromising style. The creativity at Dandi doesn’t end at the apartments, with beautifully designed amenity spaces across the development where residents can socialise and explore new experiences - championing the ‘theatre of living’. From the moment you enter Dandi’s front door, you are welcomed by this concept, with a remarkable 750,000 piece hand-laid mosaic, inspired by the delicate design of Persian carpets. This painstaking detail simply in the lobby of the development, perfectly reflects the attention to detail of the new concept of ‘design-led’ living, being introduced by Dandi. Beyond the apartments, the interior architecture and design at Dandi Wembley strive to elevate residents’ mood, by stimulating each of their senses, something which Ali has dedicated years to researching and innovating. The scheme is crowned by two floors of unmatched amenity spaces (many of which are open

The Dariana Café boasts evergreen trees, indoor fountains, and a Persian inspired menu, where dinner can be enjoyed under a retractable glass roof, allowing unrivalled, panoramic views of London (and live music from Wembley stadium). This is a rare provision for a modern rental development, which is complemented by co-working spaces, a theatre, wellness rooms and a cinema, each engendering a real sense of community. Ali Reza Ravanshad, Founder of Dandi, comments: Here at Dandi Wembley we have developed homes in which people can enjoy their own beautiful private spaces while being part of something bigger, a community that interacts in a range of elegant, shared spaces – what we call the theatre of life. Testament to this project, is the news that the 355-home scheme is now fully let within 91 days of coming to market - demonstrating the huge appetite for quality and design-led living being demanded by renters. With a clear vision to reinvent city living, focusing on vibrant, up and coming neighbourhoods in major cosmopolitan markets, Dandi has huge plans to expand this offering across London, with 15,000 units planned over the next seven years and schemes on the horizon in Brondesbury and Battersea. www.dandi.com

STUNNING MASTIC ASPHALT FLOORING PROJECT COMPLETED AT ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART’S Mastic asphalt is most commonly associated with roofing applications but due to its waterproofing properties, durability and versatility, it is being specified for more and more flooring projects. Although mastic asphalt is one of the world’s oldest construction materials, it can sometimes be perceived as a onedimensional waterproofing product only available in a standard black finish. But mastic asphalt is being re-imagined as a highly relevant building material for today. Mastic Asphalt Council contractor member Bell Asphalt has recently completed a stunning mastic asphalt flooring project at the Royal College of Art’s new £135m campus in Battersea, London, within the Battersea Creative Quarter. Noise, a pollution to be reduced Noise pollution is often reported as a major annoyance felt by the general population. Determining the causes and characteristics of noise pollution is a social requirement in places where there is constant ambient noise (cinemas, exhibitions, etc.). This noise is at the origin of many disorders affecting human activities and causes stress and fatigue. Barrisol® proposes microperforated stretch ceiling to improve the acoustic well-being of places for an optimal comfort of the occupants. The Barrisol Acoustics® line is composed of microperforated membranes which absorb sound and reduce noise pollution in public or private spaces. These membranes reduce the resonance effect and improve acoustic environments. Barrisol® offers various acoustic solutions: Acoustic Light®, Acoustic 3D, Acoustic Mirror®, Acoustic Clim®, Acoustic ,

Acoustic Print your mind®, Acoustic Frames and Artolis® Frames. The principle of absorption used in Barrisol® sheets Barrisol® acoustic solutions use the principle of absorption. This principle works by reducing the intensity of the reflection of sound waves in a room. The air movement induced by a sound source is then partially absorbed by the fabric which reflects only part of it, breaking the reverberation effect (not to be confused with acoustic insulation which cuts off the transmission of noise from one place to another). The materials allow the sound to pass through, absorbing part of it with each reflection and converting it into heat energy. It is this sequence of consecutive energy losses that reduces the noise levels in a room.

practical and economically feasible solution for home heating and hot water delivery to properties not connected to the UK grid. Purchasing a heat pump is currently incentivized by the UK government which will provide a £5,000 grant through the national Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Heat pumps offer immediate decarbonisation and provide comfortable property heat as well as hot water. Heat pumps will become a vital part of UK carbon neutral domestic energy options in the near future. Around 16% of UK properties are off grid and not connected to the national gas supply. Many of these properties are found in rural locations. Rural residences often retain large internal and external spaces that encourage effective heat pump installation. A heat pump works by extracting heat from air outside and elevating its temperature using a compressor. Compressed heat is then dispersed indoors through radiators and underfloor heating. Residual heat is stored in a hot water cylinder used for showers and baths. Heat pumps ensure that all home heating will be carbon neutral. Both the compressor and pump mechanism accept electricity. If installed correctly on to an appropriate property a heat pump will prove to be an energy efficient, effective tool of decarbonisation that delivers satisfying levels of comfort to the end-user. Off-grid properties not connected to the main UK gas grid may also prefer alternative cylinder gasses. Renewable DME (rDME) is a molecule-based fuel that can be produced through a wide range of renewable feedstocks which allows for a quick and longterm sustainable production. rDME contains a similar chemical composition to both Butane and propane. rDME can be mixed with LPG in existing appliances for continuation in product operations. rDME combusts cleanly and releases no “soot” emissions. Renewable Dimethyl Ether (rDME) has many fuel properties that make it easily used in sites and appliances using diesel as a fuel. It has a very high cetane number, which is a measure of the fuel’s ignitibility in compression ignition engines.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 76

rDME and BioLPG will become increasingly accessible and easy to use making both fuels ideal for off-grid locations. Rinnai continuous flow water heaters are compatible with BioLPG and blended rDME so do not require adapting in order to access or accept either fuel source for off-grid energy demands making Rinnai continuous flow hot water units well suited to off-grid properties regarding high power outlet and designed hot water needs.

Europe and the wider world have entered a new age in terms of energy provision and security. Importation feasibility and morality have become serious issues: BioLPG and other fuels like rDME successfully navigate these ethical issues and deliver all suited power requirements for off-grid properties. Biofuels such as rDME and BioLPG perform identically to commonly used carbon emitting fuels and end product produced by the UK gas transmission network. All off-grid carbon reducing energy demands can be met by Rinnai’s H3 range, BioLPG, rDME, heat pump, hybrid heat pump or solar power products. GOODBYE WORKSPACE HELLO BRANDPIE CLUBHOUSE Brandpie is a company which does things differently. The global

concept of the office through this design, we were excited,” said Zoe

consultancy rips up the rule book when it comes to helping clients discover and activate their purpose and it wanted a workspace as disruptive as it is. Rejecting the idea of a traditional workplace,

Martinez, Project Designer at Peldon Rose. “We asked ourselves how do we, as designers of workplaces, create something that isn’t viewed as a typical office space?

Brandpie selected design and build company Peldon Rose to create a space that was unique, and fosters connections, collaboration, and creativity – not an office, but a clubhouse. The space needed to be desirable, somewhere that Brandpie’s creative team and clients would flock to. It needed to be a ‘home from home’ or give a ‘home to coffee shop’ feel. A destination where people wanted to be and felt comfortable to come and go as they please. The 2,500 sq ft site on Great Marlborough Street in central London was the perfect location for a clubhouse that would allow people to work flexibly, yet efficiently. Previously, Brandpie worked from a serviced office, and it was ready to embrace the advantages that come from its own space.

COLLABORATION THROUGH DESIGN Creativity, community, and sustainability were at the centre of the design. This meant no meeting rooms, flexible adaptive spaces, and no fixed areas to foster an environment of creativity and transparency. It needed to be both informal and collaborative. From the beginning, Peldon Rose worked in close partnership with Brandpie, holding workshops to understand how far the company wanted to push the boundaries of the modern office, whilst striking the correct balance between innovation and practicality. “When Brandpie explained how much it wanted to challenge the

ARCHETECH - PAGE 80

“This style of workspace is something that we have been seeing our clients gravitate more towards, and the trend has definitely been accelerated by the pandemic. However, what’s really exciting is that Brandpie is one of the first companies to have taken this bold step towards a complete redesign in this way.”

A SPACE FIT FOR PURPOSE The finished product is a multidimensional, warming environment, which can be easily adapted for different needs. It features an airport-style lounge, which immediately welcomes anyone and everyone into the space, with an informal yet attractive atmosphere. There is a dedicated area where employees and visitors can grab a drink, featuring adjustable mood lighting to create a day to night transition - coffee shop by day, and bar by night. Ensuring that spaces could be adapted was a key feature of the brief and was brought to life across the project. A large central collaboration space features a high table for employees to get together, as well as the ‘Workshop’, an area to host sessions with clients that inspire creativity. All furniture used was flexible and agile, allowing it to move and adjust in line with whatever function the space is needed for. “The idea of the clubhouse was to challenge what an office is,” added Martinez, “Brandpie had fully embraced a new hybrid way of

working, and the office we had in mind wasn’t intended as a place to go and get your head down. “This was a space where employees could enjoy the social side of their working lives, something which has been lost over the last few years. Brandpie really wanted to build a greater sense of community amongst its employees, and the new office was a great way to nurture and cultivate this.” The latest technological innovations play a huge part in bringing the space to life, with extra attention paid to the accessibility of power across the clubhouse so that devices can be plugged in and

which a number of suppliers had to be sourced to help make it a reality. “The entire project brings our company culture to life,” said Wayne Roberts, COO at Brandpie. “We wanted to create something truly different for our employees, somewhere which not only reflects our changing ways of working but also demonstrates that we are a company which encourages people to come together and connect. These connections between our employees are crucial, and we feel this new space will be a place that both they and our clients love.”

BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR EMPLOYEES AND THE PLANET Whilst Brandpie is focused on discovering and defining purpose for its clients, it too is a purpose-led business. This meant that a major consideration for the new space was its sustainability credentials,

Employee wellbeing is a top priority for Brandpie and the company believes that freedom of choice helps breed a level of comfort and sparks excellence. This new office demonstrates their commitment, offering a place not just for work, but to socialise, collaborate and importantly enjoy the working day. “We couldn’t be prouder of the clubhouse,” said Wayne. “We set out to do things differently with the new space, we wanted somewhere which truly embodied our culture. After the difficulties of the past few years, our employees now have a space where they can get together, collaborate, and socialise – something which will without a doubt only help support our creativity and what we can deliver to clients.” For more information, visit www.peldonrose.com.

VICAIMA MAKES IT REAL! IMAGINATIVE AND INTEGRATED INTERIOR DESIGN Vicaima, as one of the leading European exponents of contemporary joinery solutions, including interiors doors, doorsets, wall panels and associated furniture products, have just introduced a new brand for professionals called Infinity. Combining their extensive experience within this sector with the latest technological advancements in image realisation, they present a major step forward for the world of interior design, enabling creative vision to be made real, with imaginative design composition that encompasses multiple elements. No longer constrained by conventional limitations, Infinity provides scope for interior design professionals to think beyond what they thought was possible, towards what they would ideally like to achieve. Whether creating a theme that brings rhythm and repetition, or a more dramatic and contrasting vision with pronounced statement pieces, Infinity can make it real. Infinity permits almost endless possibilities when it comes to visual aspect, with choice of colour, tone, pattern and even the perception of texture. This enables interior designers and specifiers complete flexibility when aiming to deliver bespoke project solutions. However, for those professionals looking for insight from the Vicaima experts in trends and fashions, Infinity’s top three collections offer a myriad of fresh inspiration. Select from either wood, stone or metal for an immersive experience which includes among many others, Spalted Maple, Terrazo Amber and Antique Patina. Once the design and hues have been chosen, it is then a matter of selecting which joinery elements can be combined to reflect the desired theme. Here Infinity broadens horizons and uniquely permits creators to match and play with individual pieces in a way that has traditionally been limited. Blending integral building elements such as interior door assemblies and decorative wall panels, with more ephemeral components like wardrobes and furniture to achieve the perfect balance. While flexible aesthetic design is the hallmark of Infinity, it should not be forgotten that as a Vicaima brand, superior quality and performance are integral to all elements. Exceeding industry recognised standards and in the case of doors and doorkits, third

party fire accredited to both TRADA and the British Woodworking Federation, all products are environmentally produced and FSC certificated. Infinity marks a new era in design for interiors, whether in public, commercial or residential applications. Expanding, evolving and elevating both the creative process and eventual project realisation by combining visionary image technology with industry leading joinery manufacture, to achieve outstanding results. Fordingbridge buildings, canopies, and walkways are installed across the country for the ever-growing leisure and tourism industry, and were carefully selected by Zoological Society of London to design and install 5 large-scale canopies situated across the Zoo throughout the years of 2020 to 2022, to construct their latest instalments, to better their offering of customer service and experience. We designed each building to improve aesthetic impact and to perfectly recreate the environments these animals and critters come from in the wild. From well-lit curved features, to timber clad square-style builds, the results have been outstanding.

The new permanent home of the Galapagos Tortoises at London Zoo made for purpose with inverted curved introductory walkways, enticing visitors into the domed home of the tortoises. The curved feature of the building took inspiration from the tortoise shell shape, making for an unusual and intriguing building from external viewpoints, encouraging people to take a peek inside at these critically endangered animals. The height of the structure allows for the installation of specialist equipment, enabling the Zoo to recreate their environments back home at Galapagos Island; of high humidity and increased warmth, not only for the animals, but for the tropical flora planted too.

SUSTAINABLE SOLAR INNOVATION FROM LUMENA THE RADIATA TIMBER PATH LIGHT RANGE WELCOMES A SOLAR ADDITION Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright once said; ‘Wood is universally beautiful to a man. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials’ Landscape lighting specialists Lumena started supplying professional aluminium 240v Bollard lights around 10 years ago. The choices of head, height and mounting option have proved very successful in terms of longevity and reliability. 5 years on, their passion for incorporating natural long-lasting materials into their ranges saw the launch of the ‘Radiata’ timber path lights. The ‘Radiata’ range is so called, because of the solid Radiata Pine which is sustainably sourced. The wood goes through outstanding treatment and is fully sanded to give a smooth top quality finish. During pressure treatment, the entire timber is penetrated by the latest generation wood preservative. Tanalith E preservative treatment is used in accordance with BS8417 to meet Use Class 4. Radiata pine is well-known for its low splitting properties with no feathering. Sourced and CNC machined by a top FSC certified timber supplier, it is suitable for most climates, whether the environment is hot or wet. Solid brass landscape lights are incorporated into machined orifices in the sleepers or posts to create robust, decorative path lights. Most designs are 240v mains-powered, although there are 12v options and all are LED compatible. Ideal for both domestic and commercial use, they’ve been supplied to high end developments nationwide, where durability and a rustic feel has been specified. Alongside the aluminium and timber lights, in 2019 Lumena expanded again to launch the UK’s largest range of professional solar bollards. Designed to work in UK weather, this innovative range uses highly efficient panels and lithium batteries to retain maximum charge. They also have a gradual dimming sequence throughout the night for 365-day illumination and a 5 year guarantee. The solar bollards are also aluminium, and have been supplied to housing developments, commercial walkways, glamping sites and the Eden Project, Cornwall.

The wood goes through outstanding treatment and is fully sanded to give a smooth top quality finish.

Supplying these ranges has naturally led to where ‘Timber meets Technology’. Using the same high-quality pine used for the Radiata range and the same technology and functions as the solar bollards, the new ‘EDISOL’ (above) was conceived. This amazing bollard incorporates a modern solar path light head into a 200mm diameter heavy duty timber post. The ultimate in environmentally conscious lighting, no wiring is required, simply sink the wooden post in ground, turn on, and wait for night! With a replaceable inbuilt LED filament lamp in daylight or warm white and 360 deg. low level light diffusion, they are well-suited to rural areas such as parks, walkways, caravan parks and larger driveways. LIGHTING & ELECTRICAL

EMOTIONS PAINTED BY LIGHT TRILUX lighting supported architect Jan Kabac of ARKON design house’s vision for the Sybir Memorial Museum in Bialystok. The concept is clear as soon as you approach the building, especially after dusk. The path to the museum is outlined by TRILUX PAREDA SLIM luminaires, installed low to the ground. They only illuminate the underlying pavement, symbolic of a different path - the one the prisoners sent to Siberia had to take. “Those walking the path gain the space to reflect on the fate of those who took the road only one way”, Jan Kabac explains. The Siberian Memorial Museum is located in one of the prewar military warehouses, next to the railroad siding of the Polesie Railway Station. The architect incorporated the original architectural elements into the overall design and used them as symbolic points. Here, TRILUX FACIELLA projectors enhance the drama of the illuminated objects. In addition to the symbolic layer, TRILUX Smart DALI luminaires and the Crestron video conferencing system enable several lighting scenarios. WEST FRASER LAUNCHES A NEW ARCHITECTS’ PAGE For the past six years, West Fraser (formerly Norbord), has partnered with RIBA Journal to hold an annual competition that challenges architects to use the industry’s most popular OSB brand, SterlingOSB Zero. With a different brief each year, the competition has been hotly contested by some of the industry’s most creative architectural practices, all vying to win the top prize of £2,500. The interest from architects in West Fraser products, and the company’s environmental credentials, has led to the development of a specific architect hub on the website https://uk.westfraser.com/resources/architect-support/. The new page details the competition as well as providing tailored information such as CPDs, downloadable product datasheets and BIM objects. The architect can also order product samples.

Clear Quality: Showcasing Our Glass Cabinet Range There’s nowhere to hide with glass showcases. And that’s entirely the point. Whatever it is you want to put on display, you want the clearest possible view. You also want everything - the cabinet included - to look great. That, again, is the point. Whether it’s a retail display or an art or museum exhibit or a trophy cabinet in your home, the very fact that you are putting things on show behind glass means you want to draw the eye. You want to create a certain visual appeal. That means the cabinet itself has to pull its weight. A great-looking display starts with a great-looking case. Easy enough, you might think. After all, glass is glass. But it’s with the different components used to put the glass panels together - hinges, brackets, locks - that things can become tricky for designers. With locks and hinges in particular, most manufacturers have traditionally focused on making one or the other. That makes it hard to match styles. We know that’s a major bugbear interior designers have with architectural and furnishing components full stop. But if you’re installing a glass cabinet and you can’t find hinges and locks that match, it can be infuriating. There’s no hiding the differences behind glass. Everything is on display.

Building on innovation Our own market research highlighted just how much demand there is amongst designers for end-to-end, stylistically consistent glass component ranges. That inspired us to bring a solution to market. The fact that our world-class engineering team includes expert locksmiths as well as specialists in hinge mechanism design put us in a unique position to do so. Our XL series was a market first - a complete range of glass showcase fittings, locks and hinges included, boasting total design coordination. This was a major innovation in the glass hardware industry, empowering cabinet makers to achieve premium quality, consistent finishes with ease. But the XL range was just the start of the journey.

Ref. XL-GC Series

While the XL series was designed with small to medium sized display cabinets in mind, our follow up GS-G series was developed to offer a complete solution for all glass installations. With a simple yet sophisticated aesthetic, the GS-G range includes hinges, mounting brackets, locks and, for added safety and convenience, doorstops. All are characterised by a slimline, flush-to-the-surface profile, elegantly compact rectangular designs, and premium finishes in a choice of chrome, gold or black.

Ref. HES3D Glass Adapter

The key distinguishing feature of the GS-G series is the fact that it offers components for such a large range of different cabinet types. In terms of size, hinges range from the GS-GH5, suitable for doors up to 900mm x 600mm with glass thickness of 5-6mm, all the way up to the GS-GH50, which can hold full length doors up to 2.5m in height with glass thickness of up to 12.7mm. That provides solutions for walk-in display cabinets of the kind found in shop windows and museums. For each size of hinge, we recommend matching brackets and locks. So because GS-GH50 hinges are larger than the GSGH5 and other models, you can pair them with locks and brackets of the same size for a premium finish. But at the same time, even if you have, say, walk-in display cases alongside smaller cabinets, the matching aesthetic of all GS-G components guarantees pleasing consistency in style across all. Our glass cabinet locks are available in cylinder and cam lock types. All require just a single drilled round hole for mounting, making installation quick and simple. We offer locks for single and double swing doors, and several of our glass cabinet locks are part of our Million Lock series, which allows you to use a single key to lock and unlock multiple cabinets for ultimate convenience.

Ref. Olympia Glass Adapter

Adapt and thrive As well as dedicated ranges for glass hardware, we also manufacture specially designed adapters that allow some of our best-selling door components to be fitted to glass. This includes our ground-breaking HES3D concealed hinge, which reimagines that standard pivot-arm concealed hinge design with a much more compact, sleek design. While many glass door adapters for cabinet hinges require large mounting plates that can look pretty obtrusive on glass, our HES3D adapters maintain the benefits of the slimline original design with a long, narrow plate installed in portrait orientation. Our HES3D adapters are joined by similar products for our damper-fitted soft close Olympia and J95 concealed hinges. While the GS-G range is perfect in commercial settings where all-glass display cabinets are common, glass tends to be used more sparingly in homes, and often with glass doors fitted to wooden cabinets. Our concealed hinge adapters are ideal for this kind of hybrid mounting, and when the same hinges can be used for all cabinet types across the home, you again get that magical benefit all designers appreciate consistency.

SAFE AND SECURE STORAGE SOLUTIONS PROTECTING PEOPLE, PROPERTY AND PROCESSES By Ellie Buckby, Regional Sales Manager – South East

CASE STUDY: QUINTAIN LIVING, WEMBLEY PARK Using our Property Protection range, we worked with Dexion Anglia to deliver a safe and secure storage solution for awardwinning developer Quintain. Just twelve minutes from Central London, Quintain Living at Wembley Park is an impressive project which offers a rental experience like no other. Storage in developments such as Wembley Park is inevitably limited - and that is why developers are more frequently beginning to utilise basement and plant room areas to create additional storage spaces for residents – whilst simultaneously maximising revenue.
