SCENERY IN MOTION
YANFENG ANTING SHOWROOM RENOVATION PROJECT
This showroom is in a three-story brick building built in 1992 within Yanfeng Auto Trim System Company’s Anting plant in Shanghai. The client wanted to add a showroom on the ground floor to display its automotive interior and exterior products to customers; the second and third floors were reserved for office functions.
In conjunction with Yanfeng’s brand slogan, “Experience in motion”, we hope to create a scenery-in-motion experience in this architectural space renovation project.
The space of the showroom is generated by a combination of two levels of control logic, being internal and external. On the outside, some characteristic elements of the site and the surrounding environment are carefully selected and choreographed to be embedded in the transformed spatial experience.
The west side of the building faces a narrow road that serves as the main pedestrian passage connecting the main entrance of the plant and the workshop, as well as the cafeteria, which usually has a large flow of people. The west wall of the building was closed with hollow concrete blocks, and a water feature has been installed along with the “Experience in motion” logo, creating the landscape element of the road’s end. In the afternoon, sunlight from the west is filtered through the hollowed brick wall, creating changing light and shadow patterns in the interior. The trees and lawns of the site are maximized, reserved, and orchestrated into the interior spatial experience by reorganizing the placement and size of window openings. The unfavorable factors around the site, such as the parking lot on the north side and the logistic pathway of the exhibition vehicle on the northeast side, were shielded by sealing the windows and by other means. The skylight on the second floor of the original building was reopened, and the floor slab between the first and second floors was removed so that sunlight is absorbed through the skylight into the ground floor exhibition hall.
In the interior, the goal is to create a continuous space with a sense of movement. This space is designed as a wedge shape, with one large end and one small end, and the sense of spatial perspective is enhanced. Walking through it, one feels a trend of direction. Such a directional trend has a clear destination, perhaps the external landscape in the previous narrative, or the exhibits themselves within the space. The flow of office traffic on the second floor is concealed behind a half-height sloping wall at the entrance and leads up to the stairwell via a gentle slope. The flow of visitors to the showroom is arranged to the left of the entrance, guided northward by the half-height sloping wall, through the hollowed

brick wall and light from the skylight, and then back southward through a dark ramp into the inner courtyard. The flow continues southward along the inner courtyard space to the dark gallery, where the flow turns several times before reaching the south gallery. There, the space is once again bright, with long horizontal windows eventually drawing the south lawn and sunlight inside. People finish their visit there and can choose to stay longer in the conference hall, meeting room, or outdoor terrace area.

TRANSFORMING URBAN ENVIRONMENTS
BIOTECTURE LIVING WALLS BRING BENEFITS TO WILMOTT DIXON INTERIORS
Biotecture has designed and installed an impressive series of living walls at the newly refurbished headquarters for Willmott Dixon Interiors in Farringdon, London.
Wilmott Dixon Interiors is an interior fit-out and design specialist and one of the UK’s largest construction and property companies.
In 2022 the company relocated into a new purpose designed space in Farringdon. As part of the move, the Wilmott Dixon design team created a modern, open plan working environment that promotes some of the highest standards in energy efficiency and flexible working.
Sustainability and biophilic design were also key priorities right from the start because we all have an innate connection to nature, yet we spend 90% of our time indoors.
Multiple studies have shown that bringing more plants inside provides a plethora of benefits, from improving air quality, to increasing creativity and productivity. The result is happier staff and better retention rates.
The Biotecture living walls proved to be a space efficient way to bring more plants into the Wilmott Dixon Interiors offices.
Working with the design team, Biotecture designed and installed the green wall near an amphitheatre, at the heart of the space. This enables people to benefit from improved air quality, better acoustics and enhanced wellbeing when entering the office
Biotecture’s living wall at the Bailey was constructed using PlantBox, a cleverly simple modular, stackable living wall system that is manufactured in the UK using 100% recycled materials. It is a free standing system and only requires restraint fixings which means that there is no structural loading.
Richard Sabin, Managing Director at Biotecture, said: “Our extensive experience in the living wall sector allowed us to guide and manage The Bailey project from conception through implementation and installation. This enabled us to meet all the project criteria set out by Wilmott Dixon Interiors around biophilic design and budget requirements.”
He added: “Wilmott Dixon Interiors is a forward thinking company that understands the benefits of people being close to nature.”
The Biotecture living walls at The bailey were installed over six days. The PlantBox troughs were planted up on site with high quality internal plants then stacked together.
Being simple to maintain and easy watering was an important consideration for Wilmott Dixon Interiors. Biotecture PlantBox Flourish units include a water reservoir at the base and a recirculating pump to irrigate the living wall plants. The automatic tap timers are set to irrigation once a week, meaning it is easy to keep the plants in optimum condition.
A robust mix of indoor plants were selected by Biotecture including ferns, Peace lilies, and tropical plants. These were chosen for their aesthetic appeal as well as their ability to improve air quality and attenuate sound in the open plan space.

ESG SWITCHABLE ™ GLASS FINDS SPIRITUAL HOME AT ST DIONIS CHURCH
ESG Switchable™ glass has been used to create a new multiuse space for the church and community at St Dionis Church in Parsons Green, London. Ion Glass, which provides bespoke structural glass solutions for a range of distinctive buildings, including churches, specified ESG’s Switchable™ glass as part of a stunning refurbishment of the historic Anglican church building. Using meticulously cut ESG Switchable™ panels, Ion Glass installed new glazing to gothic arches at the rear of the church, separating the main worship area from the newly enclosed area. They also added new privacy glazing to shield the church hall from the public gaze, so that meetings and functions such as weddings can take place in privacy.
The church’s gothic arch shapes made for quite a challenge for leading glass processor ESG, whose expert technicians cut the required panels to the precise shape of each arch using advanced CNC techniques while preserving the functionality of the privacy interlayer. This complex task also required the Switchable™ interlayer to be cut to the exact shape and dimensions of each arch with pinpoint accuracy, making each panel a truly bespoke project.
ESG and Ion Glass worked together to ensure that not only did the ESG Switchable™ glass fit to perfection, but that the connections for mains wiring to provide privacy at the touch of a button were positioned so that the wiring itself could be routed as discreetly as possible in this historic setting.
Ion Glass and ESG have collaborated successfully on a number of projects, ESG’s glass processing expertise perfectly complementing Ion Glass’s innovative and imaginative approach to refurbishing and replanning unique built environments.
Susan Sinden, Commercial Manager for ESG Group Ltd commented, “This has been one of our most satisfying projects, as our experts really enjoy finding solutions for unusual applications. This was one of our most complex CNC challenges to date and the end results are quite exceptionally beautiful.”
ESG is renowned for its collaborative approach, working in consultation with its clients on both product development and delivering world class glazing solutions for a multiplicity of applications and settings.

HOUSE THAT OPENS UP TO THE SUN
STEMPEL & TESAR ARCHITEKTI
ByJán Stempel &JanJakubTesařIn the southern part of Malé Kyšice town on the edge of the Křivoklát woods, there is a residential district originally home to weekend cottages. One such cottage on a flat plot of land was replaced by a passive home. The floor plan closely resembles a quarter-circle with walls made of exposed concrete blocks. The rounded wall and the ceilings are made of wood. The building opens up to the southwest into a fully grown garden. The fully glazed facade consists of windows set in anthracite frames, which are shaded by blinds inside the triple-glazed windows. The ceiling beams extend to cover the balcony on the upper floor and the terrace on the ground floor. The architects made extensive use of the contrast between the concrete and wooden building elements in the interior as well.
The architects made extensive use of the contrast between the concrete and wooden building elements in the interior as well.
The ground floor is home to a living room, kitchen, and dining room, and an open staircase leads to the four bedrooms upstairs. The bathrooms, service rooms, and storage spaces are located along the concrete walls.
House that opens up to the sun
The building’s story began to be written before the world was paralyzed by the pandemic and before Europe was gripped by an energy crisis. Did the owners’ sixth sense motivate the family to acquire a low-cost house surrounded by a beautiful garden? Not at all: it was their natural and responsible approach to life and their respect for nature, which must be protected. The principles applied during construction will continue to be relevant even after we overcome today’s pressing issues, when we all accept the threat of climate disaster, which we have perhaps ignored too much in the face of the uncertainties of the past few years.
Light and warmth, earth, and last but not least water. The client’s demands – or rather, their way of life – infuse every detail of this house located on the edge of the town of Malé Kyšice near the Křivoklát woods.
Light and warmth
The building opens up to the sun’s rays like a fan, soaking up its energy and seeking to use it economically. Thanks to its shape, the interior welcomes the first as well as the last rays of sunlight. But the house also knows how to keep from overheating, thanks to an overhanging roof and horizontal shading that protects the windows from the midday sun in the summer and acts as a balcony on the upper floor. In addition to the building’s pragmatic shape and passive shading, comfort on summer days is also aided by blinds built into the triple-glazed windows. Thanks to quality workmanship and the use of modern technologies, their effectiveness is comparable to outdoor blinds.
Naturally, the homeowners appreciate warmth in the winter, when warmth gathered from the sun reduces heating costs. The building’s self-sufficiency is further aided by a stove with a heat exchanger at the heart of the building. A stairway winding its way around the stove leads up to the bedrooms located above the living room.
Earth
The house is built primarily from a renewable material – wood. The building’s construction respects its shape and reveals the constructional principles literally to the last detail, including steel joints and tie rods that add a finishing touch to the interior and exterior. The built-in furniture has been placed between the beams in such a manner that the rooms resemble ship cabins.
Other important elements of a sustainable approach are durability and lifespan. For this reason, the building’s windward sides are protected by walls made of concrete blocks. An insulated sandwich wall aids in the natural accumulation of warmth while also promoting
the building’s stability. All technical rooms and bathrooms are concentrated along these solid, stable walls to create something like a zone of balance between the building’s southern and northern sides.
Water and air
The way the building uses water is visible at the first glaze. A small pond optimizes the use of rainwater, meaning there is sufficient water for watering the garden even during dry periods, thanks also to its own root zone treatment plant.
The retention of surface water in the garden pleasantly influences the microclimate in the immediate vicinity of the building. The property releases no wastewater into the local sewers – all water is used at least twice. The house takes a similar approach to air by using recuperation to warm fresh air from outside during the winter months.
The owners moved into the building even before it was completely finished. Over time, they have made not only the house but also the garden their home. Buried under the garden is a prefabricated cellar made of recycled plastic. Gardening implements and bicycles are stored in shipping containers. The house lives its own, undemanding life and is gradually blending in with the garden.

EVER LASTING STRENGTH
The UK brick manufacturing industry is committed to sustainability and the drive towards net zero carbon emissions. Keith Aldis, chief executive of the Brick Development Association (BDA), highlights the sustainable nature of brick, as a natural, quality, and maintenance-friendly material that is durable during all phases of its life cycle. Bricks also have the ability to accumulate heat, which can help to store and radiate energy back when necessary, making them ideal for energy-efficient buildings.
Despite the sustainable nature of brick, the UK’s leading brickmakers recognize the challenges posed by carbon emissions and climate change. Members of the BDA are committed to a programme of genuine sustainability and a drive towards net zero targets. For example, Forterra PLC has invested £95m in a new super plant at its Desford site in Leicestershire, which will be capable of producing 180m bricks per year and will significantly reduce the carbon impact of each brick manufactured on the site compared to its current factory. Similarly, leading brickmaker Ibstock aims to create the world’s first Net Zero brick factory for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
The BDA is committed to implementing five over-arching policy aims to reduce waste and increase sustainability. These include developing a better understanding of waste generation across the industry, minimizing waste produced, and single-use plastic packaging consumed, developing partnerships to cultivate a high level of awareness of waste minimization and management throughout the industry, establishing the contribution that the industry can make to the circular economy, and protecting the environment by ensuring that the industry is a good steward of the materials it uses.
These aims are fully espoused by all BDA members. Ultimately, responsible brickmakers are passionate about consumers being able to make informed choices about the credentials and provenance of their products. They are relentless in looking for more sustainable ways of working so they can look after the planet for future generations. And they are proud to do so.

SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE WITH NORDIC COPPER
Despite its long heritage, roofing some of our oldest buildings, copper and its alloys today are competitive cladding materials for all types of buildings, delivering high-quality architecture. But there is more to Nordic Copper than meets the eye, particularly in terms of sustainability, as Aurubis explains.
Copper’s unique architectural qualities are defined by its naturally developing patina – which cannot be replicated successfully using other materials with surface coatings. The patina film provides impressive protection against corrosion and can repair itself if damaged, giving its exceptional longevity.
Within a few days of exposure to the atmosphere, a copper surface begins to oxidise, changing from the ‘bright’ mill finish to a chestnut brown, which gradually darkens over several years to a chocolate brown. Continued weathering can eventually result in the distinctive green or blue patina seen on older roofs.
Natural Living Surfaces
The Aurubis ‘Nordic Copper’ range provides all these surfaces straightaway. The processes involved are generally similar to those taking place over time in the environment, utilising copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical processes.
All these surfaces form an integral part of the copper, generally continuing to change over time, and are not lifeless coatings or paint. The material is easily bent and formed, and there are no limitations on the length of copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets.
The Nordic Copper range includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ and Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, offering lighter or darker shades of brown determined by the thickness of the oxide layer. The extensive Nordic Blue, Nordic Green and new Nordic Turquoise ranges have been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. As well as the solid patina colours, ‘Living’ surfaces are available for each with other intensities of patina flecks revealing some of the dark oxidised background material.
Copper Alloys
But copper alloys are growing in popularity as well including Nordic Bronze and Nordic Brass – which can also be supplied pre-weathered. The innovative Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, giving it a rich golden through-colour and making it very stable. It has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen over time, as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the atmosphere to give a matt finish.
All Nordic Copper products are suitable for internal applications, as well as exteriors. A wide choice of Nordic Decor mechanically applied surface treatments is also available for various surfaces and alloys, particularly suited to interior design.
Apart from traditionally-jointed, rolled material supported by a substrate, various other forms of copper for architecture are increasingly being explored by designers. For example, copper can be supplied in profiled sheets or extremely flat honeycomb panels, pressed to provide surface textures and modulation, or perforated, expanded or woven as mesh for transparency. But there is more to architectural copper than meets the eye, with an unrivalled lifespan, no maintenance and full recyclability.
Whole-life Cost & Carbon Benefits
The lifespan of copper roofing and cladding can be regarded conservatively as 200 years, subject to substrate and structure, and this is endorsed by experience. Naturally, this longevity has a significant beneficial effect upon comparative whole of life cost and carbon assessments. Copper’s longevity is due to a complex patination process. It ensures extreme durability with no maintenance and resistance to corrosion in virtually any atmospheric conditions. And, unlike some other architectural metals, copper does not suffer from underside corrosion.
In addition, copper requires no maintenance or decoration. As a lightweight and flexible covering, structural support demands are reduced, resulting in lower carbon and ‘whole of life’ costs. Copper is also fully recyclable utilising long-established practices – 97% of copper in construction comes from recycling – and has other impressive sustainability and environmental credentials. And, of course, copper retains a high scrap value at eventual demolition.
Fire-safe Cladding
With an ‘A1 (non-combustible material)’ fire classification to EN 13501-1, Nordic Copper is suitable for cladding tall buildings, using appropriate constructions. Low thermal movement makes it appropriate for any climates and locations, and it is non-toxic and safe to handle, as well as non-brittle and safe to work. And, importantly today, its inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces internally as well.
An expanding series of building studies showcases the diversity of surfaces, forms and applications available with Nordic Copper today. For more information visit: www.nordiccopper.com or email: NordicCopper@aurubis.com

SCHÖCK ISOKORB FOR ICONIC NESTLÉ FACTORY SITE REGENERATION
No other UK product for concrete-to-steel applications satisfies the necessary load-bearing requirements, or meets the current and future thermal performance required by building standards (Part L), than the Schöck Isokorb structural thermal break T type SK. It is a complete system structural thermal break and is used widely on Block B, a collection of nine buildings which make up around a third of the 1400 hundred or so new properties at the Hayes Village development. This is an extensive regeneration programme in Hayes, West London and is built on the original site of the locally iconic Nestlé Factory, which dominated the area for some 80 years before production relocated to Derbyshire. Hayes Village is situated along the Grand Union Canal, surrounded by nine acres of green space and includes play areas and allotments. Original features from the Nestlé factory, including one of the listed art deco style buildings, are carefully woven into the fabric of the new development and although all the buildings have distinct characteristics, the existing factory buildings have inspired the overall design. As a result, the nine buildings that make up Block B are broken up into a series of elements and layers, each of a different brick tone and although very different in character, have façades with common themes. As a counterpoint to the solid masonry walls which wrap the primary steel frame, the metalwork of the balconies is used as a feature to enrich the façades.
MINIMISING THERMAL BRIDGING IS CRITICAL
The entire project is built with sustainability in mind and minimising any risk of thermal bridging at the balcony detailing is critical for a number of reasons. Local heat loss will result in more energy being required to maintain the internal temperature of the building, while low internal surface temperatures in the area of any thermal
bridge can cause condensation. This in turn is likely to result in structural integrity problems. Mould growth too is a possible risk, which in a residential situation can cause asthma and allergies. Incorporating the Schöck Isokorb T type SK minimises any chance of these outcomes, as it prevents the risk of thermal bridging between cantilevered steel constructions on reinforced concrete components.
A DEPENDABLE AND FULLY COMPLIANT PRODUCT RANGE
The Schöck Isokorb range of structural thermal break solutions is the largest in Europe and in the UK helps projects meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations (and the impending Future Homes Standard criteria where relevant). In addition to the Isokorb type used on this project, there are also solutions for concreteto-concrete, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. The temperature factor requirement (fRSI) used to indicate condensation risk at localised junctions, which must be equal to, or greater than 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb.
Contact Schöck on 01865 290 890; or visit the website at www.schoeck.com for full details of the Isokorb range.

MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK FOR DORSET COUNTY HOSPITAL
Dorset County Hospital is located just outside Dorchester town centre. This modern hospital provides a full range of district general services, including an accident and emergency department, and links with satellite units in five community hospitals. As the main provider of acute hospital services to a population of around 300,000, ample parking space is required at all times. It was decided that a multi-storey car park (MSCP) should be built to keep pace with demand. Due to new and stricter public regulations combined with the desire for aesthetic freedom, the task presented several challenges.
The design and construction of multi-storey car parks are receiving a lot of attention in the UK. It gives status to develop aesthetic garages and prizes are awarded every year for the best MSCP architecture – RMIG Solutions has contributed to many significant projects within this field. At the same time, the regulations and legislation for MSCPs are being tightened all the time in the UK. This applies to the guidelines for light and ventilation, and to a large extent to the rules for fire safety.
RMIG Solutions joined the project at an early stage and their experience and expertise within this field was a great advantage, enabling those involved to find the best possible solution. After a public vote, three images from the beautiful Dorset countryside had been selected for illustration on the facade, and had to be processed so that the perforated pattern creating the images could meet the requirements for open areas for light and ventilation. The images were successfully processed and the results were remarkable! Through a bit of wizardry, it was possible to change the photos to landscape format and at the same time let in light
and air for the users. This made it possible to merge the creative wishes of the architects with what was technically possible. It is always a compromise when it comes to MSCPs, but even though ventilation requirements reduce the contrast in the images, they still stand out and give residents a great impression of the Dorset landscapes.
Finally, numbers could be stamped directly on each element in the production line so there was never any doubt as to where and in what order they should be installed. This made the on-site mounting process much easier.

DESIGNING WITH ARCHITECTURAL POWDER COATED FINISHES
Major advances in powder technology and application techniques have taken this method of surface treatment way beyond the capabilities of the wet paint alternative. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the progressive Collections launched by Powdertech Corby over the past 24 months.
Richard Besant, Director, Powdertech Corby explains “We have always worked to develop finishes that add more than just colour and protection to metal, starting with our Wood Finish Collection back in 2000. We’ve launched finishes that resemble natural earth elements and brilliant jewel effects. We’ve also recognised that many customers are excited by unique finishes, not seen elsewhere, or indeed bespoke finishes that they have a role in designing themselves.”
Powdertech provides premium quality powder coating services for the architectural and interior design markets using high performance powders from world-leading manufacturers. Working for many years with these powders, the team has developed methods of providing unique effects and textures. The Freeform™ finish even gives the customer the ability to have their own design, logo or text reproduced by powder coating. The beauty of Freeform is the ease and speed with which it can be applied to metal for external architectural metalwork or for interior design.
Powdertech’s most recent exclusive Collection is ’Satellite’, a finish with a distinctive iridescent gleam formed using metallic and pearlescent effects to generate a depth of colour unrivalled in a one-coat application. This finish brings a similar effect as anodising, but without the drawbacks of anodic coatings. The range is made exclusively for Powdertech to the company’s visual and technical requirements and conforms to BS EN 12206-1 standards and Qualicoat specifications. The Evolution-Aged Metal range has rapidly achieved great popularity, for both internal and external finishes. The seventy-two shades in this Collection are based on the patinas caused in nature by metallic oxidation and ageing. This is an exciting development in powder coating technology, creating beautiful and striking effects. Some of the most popular shades in this Collection are those producing the effect oxidised copper (such as Copper Mine shown in the images on this page) and the various rust shades, which, unlike Corten, are stable in wet conditions and do not cause any staining of surrounding materials.

WINDOW ENERGY RATINGS OR U-VALUES?
BY WOJCIECH BROŻYNA - MD OF ALUPROF UKBack in 2005, the Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) took over the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) and then gained Government acceptance of the then new, Window Energy Rating scheme (WER’s). At the time these ratings became a means of compliance with Building Regulations. As all WERs are based on the same standard sized window, and enable direct comparisons across various manufacturers’ products, this helps customers in product selection. By combining a window’s solar gain benefits, its air permeability and thermal efficiency in a simple calculation offers an easily understood ‘banding’ of performance, the result of which is something that the wider public already understands from the sale of domestic electrical goods. As we now move to higher performance windows and the need to thermally enhance our complete building fabric, are WER’s still the best measure?
With the next announced change in Building Regulations just two years away, when the Industry will be expected to offer window U-values of below 1.0 will this mean that the current WER banding becomes mostly obsolete? When first launched, the WER scheme offered ratings across a band of A to E, more recently the band is running with two further ‘A’ bands of ‘A+’ and ‘A++” which recognise higher performance windows. Will bandings need to be realigned if we decide to continue to use them in the future?
In reality, the choice of window performance on WER’s alone is flawed. When the energy performance label was introduced for electrical goods back in 1995 products bought and used across the UK would perform very much the same in any home, the same cannot be said for WER’s. Windows chosen on a WER will be made to measure, in various configurations, installed in various constructions, located in different geographic locations and in various orientations. Windows facing South will realise a high solar gain, whilst those facing North will experience very little so, the ‘best’ WER performance window chosen may not be the best performing in use and therefore not the most cost effective choice.
It is well understood today that a holistic optimisation of the complete building fabric is more beneficial in terms of energy and environmental savings than a component-by-component approach. The provision of a calculated window U-value for a given configuration can then be used in the formulation of a building’s thermal performance, a WER cannot.
Homes in the future will have to be built to and refurbished to a very high thermal standard which then require very little energy to heat, indeed, some high performance buildings could actually
generate more energy than they need, producing excess ‘green energy’ which can then be used elsewhere.
There are various schemes and specifications that enable architects to construct or renovate buildings to meet very high thermal standards whilst maintaining a healthy internal environment. Passivhaus is a well known specification which is rapidly becoming the specification of choice for architects. Based on a ‘fabric first’ approach, the complete building fabric must be carefully designed with high insulation materials taking great care to eliminate cold bridging either inside a building element or where various building elements interface. One of the challenges of good fabric design within Passivhaus, is the window frame interface to the structural reveal of a building, particularly in an existing building.
Whilst not all our future buildings will be built to the Passivhaus specification, the basis of this specification is logical and there will be alternate specifications agreed upon. Scotland has already agreed that in a couple of years all new homes will be built to their version of a Passivhaus standard.
So, whilst there has been a swing in the past to use WERs as a simple tool of energy performance, the industry will swing back to using the U-value as this measure will be needed to design good thermally efficient spaces within buildings. In future, it is not going
to be acceptable to simply place a high performance window into a thermally inefficient reveal. Not only will this window not perform as expected, but it’s also simply not cost effective.
Whilst WERs are basically a tool for the public to be aware of energy performance of various products, we can see that in the future window replacement will be coupled together with building structure thermal improvements, this will likely be seen in new building regulations that will stop the simple replacement of windows in an existing structure. Far from restricting sales of windows and doors for home improvement companies, there is huge potential for these companies to rise to the needs of the country to help improve all our building stock to meet our commitment to being carbon neutral by 2050.
Further information about systems and specification support is available through the company’s website at www.aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK head office in Altrincham by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005.
It is well understood today that a holistic optimisation of the complete building fabric is more beneficial in terms of energy and environmental savings than a component-bycomponent approach.
Clear Quality: Showcasing Our Glass Cabinet Range
There’s nowhere to hide with glass showcases. And that’s entirely the point. Whatever it is you want to put on display, you want the clearest possible view.
You also want everything - the cabinet included - to look great. That, again, is the point. Whether it’s a retail display or an art or museum exhibit or a trophy cabinet in your home, the very fact that you are putting things on show behind glass means you want to draw the eye. You want to create a certain visual appeal.
That means the cabinet itself has to pull its weight. A great-looking display starts with a great-looking case. Easy enough, you might think. After all, glass is glass. But it’s with the different components used to put the glass panels together - hinges, brackets, locks - that things can become tricky for designers. With locks and hinges in particular, most manufacturers have traditionally focused on making one or the other. That makes it hard to match styles.
We know that’s a major bugbear interior designers have with architectural and furnishing components full stop. But if you’re installing a glass cabinet and you can’t find hinges and locks that match, it can be infuriating. There’s no hiding the differences behind glass. Everything is on display.
Building on innovation
Our own market research highlighted just how much demand there is amongst designers for end-to-end, stylistically consistent glass component ranges. That inspired us to bring a solution to market. The fact that our world-class engineering team includes expert locksmiths as well as specialists in hinge mechanism design put us in a unique position to do so.
Our XL series was a market first - a complete range of glass showcase fittings, locks and hinges included, boasting total design coordination.
This was a major innovation in the glass hardware industry, empowering cabinet makers to achieve premium quality, consistent finishes with ease. But the XL range was just the start of the journey.
While the XL series was designed with small to medium sized display cabinets in mind, our follow up GS-G series was developed to offer a complete solution for all glass installations. With a simple yet sophisticated aesthetic, the GS-G range includes hinges, mounting brackets, locks and, for added safety and convenience, doorstops. All are characterised by a slimline, flush-to-the-surface profile, elegantly compact rectangular designs, and premium finishes in a choice of chrome, gold or black.
The key distinguishing feature of the GS-G series is the fact that it offers components for such a large range of different cabinet types. In terms of size, hinges range from the GS-GH5, suitable for doors up to 900mm x 600mm with glass thickness of 5-6mm, all the way up to the GS-GH50, which can hold full length doors up to 2.5m in height with glass thickness of up to 12.7mm. That provides solutions for walk-in display cabinets of the kind found in shop windows and museums. For each size of hinge, we recommend matching brackets and locks. So because GS-GH50 hinges are larger than the GSGH5 and other models, you can pair them with locks and brackets of the same size for a premium finish. But at the same time, even if you have, say, walk-in display cases alongside smaller cabinets, the matching aesthetic of all GS-G components guarantees pleasing consistency in style across all.
Our glass cabinet locks are available in cylinder and cam lock types. All require just a single drilled round hole for mounting, making installation quick and simple. We offer locks for single and double swing doors, and several of our glass cabinet locks are part of our Million Lock series, which allows you to use a single key to lock and unlock multiple cabinets for ultimate convenience.
Adapt and thrive
As well as dedicated ranges for glass hardware, we also manufacture specially designed adapters that allow some of our best-selling door components to be fitted to glass. This includes our ground-break ing HES3D concealed hinge, which re imagines that standard pivot-arm con cealed hinge design with a much more compact, sleek design.
While many glass door adapters for cab inet hinges require large mounting plates that can look pretty obtrusive on glass, our HES3D adapters maintain the benefits of the slimline original design with a long, nar row plate installed in portrait orientation.
Our HES3D adapters are joined by similar products for our damper-fitted soft close Olympia and J95 concealed hinges. While the GS-G range is perfect in commercial settings where all-glass display cabinets are common, glass tends to be used more sparingly in homes, and often with glass doors fitted to wooden cabinets. Our concealed hinge adapters are ideal for this kind of hybrid mounting, and when the same hinges can be used for all cabinet types across the home, you again get that magical benefit all designers appreciateconsistency.
TRANSLUCENT BUILDING ELEMENTS WITH A VIEW
RODECA: INTEGRATED ALUMINIUM WINDOW SYSTEMS FOR ROOF AND FAÇADE
From top-hung or pivoting sashes to skylights and fixed glazing elements: different façade and roof openings can be integrated into Rodeca GmbH’s translucent building elements. Glazing is possible with both insulating glass and polycarbonate. Rodeca’s product portfolio includes a wide range of solutions for individual project implementation: from non-thermally broken sashes for industrial glazing to thermally broken designs for residential construction.
When planning windows for a construction project, high demands are placed on the design and functionality. That is the case for both industrial and residential construction. Rodeca GmbH from Mülheim an der Ruhr offers individual window solutions in different designs for façades and roofs. These become integrated design elements and create a visually appealing connection to the outside world.
INDIVIDUAL WINDOW OPENINGS
The aluminium windows have been developed to integrate with Rodeca façades. With its window series 80, 85 and 86,
the manufacturer of translucent building elements offers a comprehensive range of products for roofs and façades. From various side-hung, top-hung, centre-hung and bottom-hung sashes – opening outwards or inwards – to combination elements and skylights: different designs are available. The non-thermally broken aluminium frame profiles of Series 80 are mainly used for industrial glazing.
Available in various dimensions, this design is suitable for polycarbonate glazing with translucent building elements in thicknesses of 40 millimetres and for insulating glass up to 20 millimetres thickness. Window series 85 and 86 are ideal for both industrial and residential buildings. In the latter design series, glazing is only possible with Rodeca’s translucent building elements. Both of these series comprise thermally broken aluminium window systems, and their windows are suitable for polycarbonate glazing with panels in thicknesses of 40, 50 and 60 millimetres. Series 85 is also available in different, flexible dimensions.
THERMAL INSULATION AND VENTILATION
Functional requirements for window systems are particularly high for industrial glazing. Besides weather protection and easy installation, energy efficiency is of particular importance. Rodeca aluminium windows satisfy all of these requirements. The translucent building elements feature high temperature resistance and strength. For instance, the plastic polycarbonate is 200 times more impact-resistant than glass and is shatter-proof. Glazing with both polycarbonate and insulating glass exhibits high insulating properties. Available in all colours, the frame profiles blend in with the façade design, making them an attractive solution for architects and planners.
With Rodeca GmbH’s various aluminium window solutions, planners and architects have a wide range of design options which integrate into façades or roofs perfectly.

ROCKET LAUNCH
ULTRA – THE “4-WAY” FLUSH DOOR SYSTEM
Rocket Door Frames have launched an innovative flush door system that has distinct advantages over it’s predecessor, advantages for the architect, developer and contractor.
The evolution of the Flush Door design has been prolific throughout Europe over recent years. The design concept of a door without architraves that blends into any interior design has been appreciated by Interior designers everywhere. Initially the design emanated from Italy but has since become the biggest growth sector in the door market.
Rocket door frames have been at the forefront of this evolution with a product similar to other suppliers in the market which meant having to specify either Push or Pull and either Left or Right opening, that’s 4 different products, each one specific without any flexibility to change.
The new UTRA Flush Door system combines all these 4 possibilities into one simple product, Push or Pull, Left or Right opening. This translates into easy specifying, ease of supply (you always get the right product), ease of installation and last but certainly not least, the ability to change your mind about Push/Pull, Left/Right!
The Rocket ULTRA Flush door system is made from high quality aluminium using the very best component suppliers.
Here are just some of the advantages of the Rocket Flush Door system –
1. All doors are 44mm flush and have been approved in the Rocket system for FD30 fire rating.
2. A top quality AGB MAGNETIC lock and latch with strike plate and 3M long lasting bumper seals
3. The European manufactured 3 way adjustable invisible hinges ensure perfect alignment of the door to the frame and so have a perfect flush finish. .
4. You can use the Rocket system with standard metal stud, timber stud and masonry walls.
5. Sturdy OSB spacers are supplied with each frame meaning the perfect door alignment is assured when installing
6. To protect against oxidisation the frame is supplied fully protected and primed ready for painting.
7. The risk of plaster cracking on the edges over time has been virtually eliminated with the ‘hooked’ aluminium profile that holds the plaster firm.

TIMBER WINDOWS AND DOORS IN WEST LONDON
The Sash Window Workshop specialise in traditional timber windows and doors, offering installation and draught proofing services across London and Southern England and a supply only service nationwide.
The company were contacted regarding a project in West London. The work was done in stages, with the initial quote for one new casement window and to replace the sashes (the moving parts) in two windows.
Excellent attention to detail was required to ensure that they matched the style of the property and that the new sashes would operate smoothly within the existing window frame. The windows also needed to be double glazed.
After the customer decided to proceed, the new joinery was manufactured in Berkshire by The Sash Window Workshop. The windows were installed by the company’s fitting team and draught proofed to further improve energy efficiency.
The customer was very happy and decided to place four more orders for a complete new French door and new sashes in 7 box sash windows and 2 large bay windows.
After the work was complete, the customer commented that it is “always a pleasure to deal with The Sash Window
Workshop. Personable and considerate staff. High quality workmanship.”

RISER DOORS
BUILT TO DELIVER AND MEET BUILDING REGULATIONS
Riser doors are seen to be the most important door in the building for many industries. Commercial dwellings rely heavily on these doors as they help create a seamless hideaway to all key elements of a building, including maintenance and infrastructure parts that are kept safely tucked away and hidden.
With industry changing incidents such as the Grenfell Tower, now forming regulations within the construction industry, it has become imperative for specifiers to deliver products that fulfil the correct building regulations.
Kelly Steventon Business Development Executive at Access Panels
Direct states “Riser doors are a perfect way to provide access to mechanical or plumbing systems that are installed vertically in a building. These systems include HVAC ducts, electrical wiring, plumbing pipes, or fire suppression systems. We have supplied various, riser door-sets built to meet the required performance tests including bi-directionally fire-tested, acoustically rated, airtight, and relevant insulation feature”.
When these systems need maintenance or repair, it’s important to have a way to access them quickly and easily, and riser doors provide a convenient and safe way to do so.
General audits of these building codes often means a regular inspection of these systems to ensure they are working properly and are up to code. A riser door provides a way for inspectors to access the systems without having to dismantle walls or ceilings.
Furthermore, fluent access to these areas is also important during emergencies, where in the event of a fire or other emergency, firefighters or other first responders may need to quickly access these systems to shut them off or control the situation.
Kate Neale Managing Director at Access Panels Direct comments
“We have seen an extensive shift in the demand for riser doors over the last 12-18 months. Here at Access Panels Direct the business has worked alongside several contracting clients and successfully supplied over 100 large projects ranging from Leisure & Hospitality, Commercial, Healthcare, Residential, Infrastructure and Care Home”.

AUTOBARN BY BINDLOSS DAWES
ARCHITECTURE PRACTICE BINDLOSS DAWES HAS COMPLETED A FIVEBAY GARAGE AND ACCOMPANYING WORKSHOP TO HOUSE A CLIENT’S COLLECTION OF CLASSIC CARS
The elegant timber addition sits within the grounds of a GradeII listed 18th century home located on the outskirts of a leafy Somerset village. Bindloss Dawes developed a flexible, ‘long-life, loose-fit’ concept that could be used for a range of different uses at different stages of the building’s life.
The Autobarn comprises a long, slender garage which intersects with a hardy workshop space appearing as two pitched volumes in an L-shaped plan. The spaces are top-lit by overhead glazing that runs along the apex of their angular roofs, illuminating the five-bay garage and the taller mechanic workshop below. Bindloss Dawes integrated a sleek timber tool store and washbasin at the perimeter of the workshop, which overlooks the leafy gardens beyond through a large double glazed window. A toilet and further storage is concealed by timber joinery under stairs which lead to a mezzanine study, diversifying the spaces on offer for future use.
Bindloss Dawes contended with the challenge of coordinating an intricate arrangement of sliding doors to provide security, access, and climate control. The largest opening, a 7m entrance to the garage, features a three-bay wide, floor-to-ceiling timber screen that smoothly slides beyond the footprint of the foundations to provide easy access into the garage. An equally-vast, twoleaf, sliding glass door provides a further layer of security, and stacks itself behind a two-bay wide steel security door, which mechanically peels back to sit flush along the south western wall.
The three layers act in deft unison, with the precision detailing of the foundations that they sit in allowing each to operate independently. Meticulously designed components and junctions, with exacting tolerances, create a seemingly simple elevation capable of creating varied facade options with ease.
Bindloss Dawes’ design draws on neighbouring agricultural barns, utilising their contextual appropriateness and learning from their lessons in low-cost, materially-efficient design. A natural, pragmatic palette of timber, steel, concrete and recycled wood strand board combine to create a feeling of serenity and cleanliness. Their quiet tones allow the fleet of classic cars to become the focus.
As a project proposed to adapt over time, significant consideration has been given to how it weathers; the zinc roof and its concealed gutters will dull, complementing the silver patination of the sweet chestnut cladding, and the tones of the concrete plinth. As well as creating more depth, and texture, the open-lattice design of the cladding was chosen to help improve affordability, through reducing the quantity of timber required by 30%. Internally this device creates dappled daylight during the day, which is reversed at night as the light from the inside spills out into the surrounding landscape.
The components of construction are enjoyed and celebrated, rather than hidden, most clearly evidenced by the exposed steel structure that sets out each car bay. The insitu concrete base, articulated both externally and internally, provides an adaptable, tough floor surface for the projects present and future use.
Internally, the steel structure is expressed in an array of simple portal frames, with acoustic boards made of wood strands and cement lining the walls and ceilings between them. The garage is calm, almost gallery-like; while the taller workshop is tougher, complete with hard-wearing concrete wainscotting to add extra utility and robustness.
Although thermostats are currently turned down for its current use, the building includes underfloor heating powered by an Air Source Heat Pump, as well as additional first fix services hidden behind the internal wall panelling for potential future conversion. Autobarn exemplifies Bindloss Dawes’ approach to architecture that enhances and adds value to clients and context at any scale of project.
Oliver Bindloss, Director, Bindloss Dawes says: “Our aim was to create a building that appeared elegant and familiar at first glance, but then opened up to reveal something surprising and unexpected. Using the barn typology helped us to achieve this, creating simple timber forms that you might expect to find throughout the countryside, but then introducing some theatre with the big sliding doors, opening up the building to reveal the car collection inside”.
Tim Swift, client, says: “It’s been my long-term dream to bring my car collection together under one roof, and to start all the restoration projects I’ve been planning. When I approached Bindloss Dawes I had some strong ideas about how I wanted the project to look and feel, so the design has been a close collaboration between myself and the architects. I’m really pleased with what we have produced together.”

BEFORDSHIRE INDUSTRIAL BUILDING FIRE-LINED WITH A1 MAGPLY BOARDS
A family owned fishing and holiday business in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside is currently seeing a variety of new leisure and commercial facilities being created, with high performance Magply boards from the range of IPP Ltd. having been chosen for lining a large new caravan maintenance workshop.
Henlow Bridge Lakes near Henlow, was established on land surrounding a former mineral workings at the time of the Millennium by Dave Curson, who still runs the business with his two sons, Chris and Paul with Chris and Irene Rushton. The current work is creating space for more customers to stay, along with staff accommodation and other improvements.
Dave Curson, whose drive and ideas have shaped Henlow Bridge Lakes, commented: “We originally purchased the 58 acres of land back in 1996 and set up the original campsite in 2001 and created the fishing lakes in 2003. Then more recently in 2020, we gained planning permission on the minerals site to create secure storage for 200 caravans, new holiday lodges and a staff accommodation unit, plus the workshop which will have space to work on four touring caravans.
I did the original design on this 18 metre square building – based on the requirements of the tenant we’d identified - before bringing in Vega Construction as a specialist in light gauge steel framing.
We decided to utilise the 12mm Magply boards to line the structure on the recommendation of the main contractor, who has past experience of working with them where there is a fire protection requirement. All of the boards are being installed using selftapping screws by just two men, working from a cherry picker and I think it is all going to look really quite good when it is finished.”
All of the Magply boards are being supplied through the local branch of Jewson and offer a range of performance benefits relevant to the application.
In fact Magply boards carry Euroclass A1 and other internationally recognised certifications, confirming their suitability as a fire mitigating sheathing for timber or steel frame systems, as well as in rainscreen cladding, SIPs and other modular/offsite constructions. The material also offers impact, racking and pullout strength.
In addition, Magply has recently been awarded a coveted BBA Certificate following stringent assessments, which included a six-month leaching test, producing a Zero score thanks to the production process which ensures stability and durability as a substrate in render backer and other applications.

ADVANCED PROTECTS UNIQUE LISTED SCOTTISH HOME OF TIMBER CRAFTSMAN
AN INTELLIGENT FIRE ALARM CONTROL PANEL FROM FIRE PROTECTION SOLUTIONS MANUFACTURER, ADVANCED, HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE STEADING, THE HOME OF SCULPTOR AND FURNITURE MAKER, TIM STEAD MBE
The Steading is an A-Listed building, located in Blainslie near Lauder in the Scottish Borders, and was both the creative centre and home to the Stead family across several decades. It was purchased by the Tim Stead Trust in 2021 and a programme of restoration work has included the addition of an Advanced Go new-generation, singleloop fire alarm control panel to protect this historic home.
The Steading is considered Tim’s masterpiece with the interior completely clad in sculpted wood: floors, walls, ceilings, stairs, cupboards, beds, a grandfather clock, sink, conservatory, hanging sculptures, desks and so on – all made by Stead himself. This exceptional building now aims to become a hub for practical expertise in everything to do with wood and the environment, hosting a variety of day and residential courses in the unique environment of The Steading.
Fire and security service providers, Safe Services, installed the Advanced Go fire alarm panel and were involved from the design stage though to installation and commissioning. The panel is integrated with EMS Firecell radio equipment for a complete cablefree fire system - which was an essential requirement to preserve and protect the unique interior of the building.
Graeme Millar, Fire Systems Technical and Sales Engineer at Safe Services said: “The Steading is a truly amazing property and we are delighted to have been able to install a system that helps protect this listed building from fire, without interfering with Tim Stead’s beautiful interior. Advanced is our fire protection manufacturer of choice and we rate them very highly, we don’t use anything else.”
Neil Parkin, Advanced Sales Manager for the North, said: “Our Go fire panel provides sophisticated Advanced configuration but with a single loop making it ideal for small projects like The Steading that still want robust fire protection to offer real peace of mind. Go was developed so that customers can still benefit from the performance, reliability, and flexibility they’ve come to expect from our premium MxPro 5 range, but in a cost-effective, single-loop format for simpler sites where networking’s not needed.”
Go is the ideal solution for a wide range of single-panel sites – from restaurants, bars and guesthouses to small offices, shops, salons and surgeries. On straightforward jobs,
Go’s fuss-free installation and configuration save time and money. However, the new panel also makes light work of more complex sites requiring sophisticated cause and effect programming options as well as false alarm management and reduction solutions.
Cost-efficiencies for customers have also been central to Go’s development, delivering maximum functionality on a small-site budget. The panel has 15 zonal LEDs as standard for clearer visual indication and BS 5839 compliance without the need to buy a separate LED zone card. Compatibility with three leading detector protocols provides wired and wireless options, as well as greater freedom over design and maintenance provider costs. Further cost savings as well as greater flexibility for site-specific installations are available thanks to a choice of two performance options with different maximum numbers of configurable addresses.

HIGHLIGHTS AT CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2023
23–25 MAY 2023
Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to EC1 London between 23 – 25 May 2023. Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet – featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.
CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues (see “notes to editors” for details) across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden. While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of the festival.
ARCHITECTURE GOES INFLATABLE
Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his large-scale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings. At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art –
sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This site-specific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of
Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size.
“Gateway offers a dynamic and unforgettable sensory experience,” says Messam. “While the spikes tower above the public as they pass through the gate, the bespoke piece traces the internal space between the arches before bursting out beyond the bounds of the building.”
In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes – sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.
SUSTAINABILITY IS THE NORM
Creating a more sustainable way of living – from biodiversity to reduce-reuse-recycle – remains a key subject matter for many design manufacturers and makers. Using modern technology and the latest research, many explore and propose new ways to challenge the status quo while tackling these industry-wide issues with a global outlook.
As part of the CDW Presents series, SYMBIOCENE LIVING: Mycelium Building Block is an interpretive, artistic mycelium installation that encourages the public to envision and engage with fungi architecture. While the modular feature is made of mycelium blocks with a 3D printed timber shell, the blocks – each similar in size to a watermelon – will be arranged to create a different formation incorporating abstract seating and towers on each day of the festival.
Set to be situated outside Clerkenwell & Social on St John’s Square, this one-off installation is designed by East London-based PLP Architecture – which has produced some of the world’s greenest and most intelligent designs through a profound commitment to social, economic and environmental values.
Over at Old Sessions House, Heiter X – a sustainable food design and experience studio founded by Estonia-based Helis Heiter – will launch its first collection of sculptural tableware in collaboration with Krohwin. Crafted using traditional building techniques and innovative 3D clay printing technology, the Mound Collection is made from
raw clay and natural carnauba wax – as well as repurposed food industry waste including buckwheat and hemp shells. The collection symbolises the mounds of food wasted every day, serving as a visual reminder of the need for more conscious consumption and waste reduction.
The new tableware will be shown alongside Terra Firma, an edible tablescape aimed to spark conversation and inspire change in the way we think about and interact with food.
Launched in 2022, Kent-based Recork (Project) specialises in stylish cork flooring made from 85% natural cork, harvested from trees grown in well-managed cork oak Montado. According to the eco-conscious company, it is the only one on the market that takes raw material from the Portuguese oak forests and turns production waste used for stoppers – as well as cork from early harvests – into flooring planks. Recork’s stand at CDW will feature its latest rug collection – made entirely from sustainably sourced cork, wool and cotton – in partnership with Portuguese brand Sugo Cork Rugs.
Founded by former textile buyer Charlotte Raffo, The Monkey Puzzle Tree (Light) celebrates the best of creativity and eccentricity from the North of England – by collaborating with Yorkshire artists to locally design and produce fabrics and wallpapers. At CDW, the independent business will showcase its Modernist-inspired wallpaper, Hit The North, featuring artwork by graphic artist Drew Millward printed onto sustainable Portuguese cork.

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK
Other highlights to look out for include:
• Ercol (British Collection) – Its Marino chair will be relaunched at the festival in sustainable homegrown British timber – as part of its latest partnership with Grown in Britain (GiB);
• Graphenstone (Contract) – The brand will present its Ambient Pro+ and Grafclean paint ranges made from natural mineral ingredients and graphene fibres;
• Morph (Project) – Set up in 2021, the British company manufactures injection moulded hollow bricks – made from 100% recycled plastic – with a connection system that can create walls, desks, tables and tiered seating. At CDW, it will launch Morph Bio, a new carbon-negative range made from biocomposite material and available in multiple colours;
• AllSfär (Project) – The UK-based acoustic expert is known for its products made with at least 60% recycled PET, with each panel produced using the equivalent of 280 recycled plastic bottles. Expect to see its new wall surface, Fika, at the festival;
• Parkside (Showroom) – Its newly launched Sequel Principle will be a key highlight – a recycled composite tile consisting of over 91% recycled content; in particular, unwanted materials from the ceramic and glass industry locally sourced in Spain; and
• Vepa (Showroom) – The sustainable furniture manufacturer from the Netherlands will open its new showroom and sustainability education centre at 45 Gee Street during CDW, and show the full colour range of its Felt seating – made from PET plastic bottles – for the first time in the UK.
MODERN CRAFT PERSEVERES
Our enduring love for the craft as seen in recent years shows no signs of slowing down. The UK continues to lead the way in championing the best talent and finest craftsmanship – and visitors to this year’s CDW will not be disappointed by the eclectic mix of independent makers and businesses this country has to offer.
Greek-born, London-based furniture designer and sculptor Kostas Synodis (Platform) will join the festival for the first time. Blending art and design with his signature pared-down aesthetic, the newcomer will exhibit a new foldable low deckchair. Made from three pieces of veneer plywood cut out of the same panels to minimise material use, Notch is inspired by an African palaver chair but reimagined in a more contemporary approach. It can be folded into a 24-mm thick board when not in use.
Now in its 12th year, Curiousa (Light) is renowned for its bespoke hand-blown glass lighting made in its Derbyshire-based old mill studio. At CDW, the brand will present its new Wave chandelier – designed by its founder Esther Patterson – featuring five handformed glass vessels threaded onto beams of light. Including horizontal Ripple Beams and vertical Crest and Cascade pendants, the pieces intersect with each other creating a feeling of effortless interplay and suspension.
Run by husband and wife, Jamie Hoyle and Katherine Mathew, Koda (British Collection) designs and makes bespoke furniture – by hand – in its studio and workshop in Yorkshire. The 10-year-old business will bring its ergonomic height-adjustable walnut desk – an elegant reimagination of a traditional writing desk – as well as its walnut media unit to the festival this May.
Also led by a husband-and-wife duo, Joel and Helena Haran, Cornwall-based Studio Haran (Light) specialises in lighting and furniture with sustainability at its core. Its founders work closely with a team of local skilled craftspeople to produce slip-cast ceramics and woodwork; some of which – including the Dawn pendant and wall light – will be on show at CDW.
Fibre artist Livi Hecht of London-based Knot My Name will display her contemporary artwork at Platform. Using eco-friendly materials, Hecht produces handmade macramé products and made-to-order pieces. Another one to watch at Platform is Timber Robot Studio – set up by Philip Gay in 2022. A former propmaker from the film industry, Gay retrained in fine woodwork in 2021 before starting his furniture and homeware business. At CDW, he will showcase his latest handmade designs – including an Art Deco-inspired chest made from solid ash and rippled ash veneer.
Meanwhile, over at Detail, interior architects and founders of Ziba Homes, Mitali Bansal and Ria Chhabra, will launch three new pieces of furniture – an exquisite collection of patterns curated using a wide range of materials and handcrafted techniques. One of them is the Emerald Envy malachite console combined with ash wood and wicker – which will be on show alongside a coordinating set of home accessories. DURABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FLOORS
Visitors to the Bjelin stand at Clerkenwell Design Week will have the opportunity to see at first hand the latest innovations in hardened wood flooring.
The latest developments from industry leading innovators and sister company Välinge Innovation, which developed the world’s first mechanical locking system for wood and laminate flooring, are incorporated in the product offer. Over the past year the company has been rolling out the Bjelin Hardened Wood Flooring brand in the UK. It has now completed a number of stunning high-end projects in the London area, which showcase the amazing aesthetic of the Bjelin products to maximum effect.
The company’s new hardened wood products feature the Välinge Innovation technologies of Woodura® and 5G® Dry™, representing the next generation of highly innovative engineered wood floors.
On the stand at the Show, the company will be highlighting its focus on innovation, through its Woodura®, 5G® Climb™ and Hygienius™ ranges. It will also be highlighting its pioneering sustainability. The company’s manufacturing process is much more efficient and environmentally friendly in terms of timber usage than traditional processes. The key to the sustainability of Woodura® is the fusing of a thin sheet of real wood with a Compositek™ HDF wood fibre core through a powder mix layer. This enables ten times more flooring to be produced from the same amount of timber, compared to
traditional engineered wood flooring and 30 times more flooring compared to solid wood flooring.
The 5G® Dry™ locking system additionally provides enhanced water resistance by preventing water from penetrating into the seams of the floor panels, and 5G® Climb™ is a further variant which comprises innovative technology for wall mounting. In this way you can make the floor ‘climb up the wall’, ensuring a perfect match between floor and wall.

THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE, URBAN PLANNING AND THE GENIUS OF ALAN TURING INFORM 74’S DESIGNS FOR ENIGMA SQUARE
Interior design practice 74 has harmonised three different inspirational strands in its designs for the new amenity spaces at Grainger plc’s Enigma Square in Milton Keynes. Enigma Square is a new, £63m, BTR residential scheme from Grainger, the UK’s largest listed residential landlord, and encompasses 261 purpose-designed rental homes in a central Milton Keynes development on a site that once housed a YMCA. The new project follows the completion of a number of other highly-successful BTR amenity design schemes by 74 for Grainger, including The Headline and Pin Yard in Leeds.
About the Scheme
Enigma Square is the second BTR development by Grainger to complete in the Buckinghamshire city and follows the 2020 launch of Solstice Apartments. Enigma Square is located on North Row, ten minutes from Milton Keynes Central Station, in a new-build development by architects Pick Everard, and is comprised of two, interlinking eight-storey blocks accommodating a mix of studios, one and two-bedroom apartments, and three-bedroom duplexes. Facilities include a communal garden, private balconies and a stunning series of multi-storey amenity spaces designed by 74, who have quickly become one of the UK’s leading designers of BTR interiors.
Strategic Thinking
As part of the practice’s thorough background research at the outset, 74’s site analysis noted a number of common misconceptions about Milton Keynes, often perceived as a concrete jungle, dominated by buildings and roads and lacking in green space.
“The truth is radically different”, 74 Founder David Holt revealed. “As much as 40% of Milton Keynes is in fact green space. The city boasts 180 miles of bridleways, 100 trees for every single resident and, amazingly, more canal bridges than Venice. When we began our design concept for the amenity space, we wanted to pay homage to these links to nature, as well as to the radical grid system at the heart of the city’s planning, created when Milton Keynes was originally founded in 1967 as a ‘new town’ to help alleviate housing shortages in London.”
The Amenity Design Scope
The resident amenity design scheme at Enigma Square incorporates a 1,680 sq ft ground floor reception and concierge area, plus back-of-house management and team facilities, as well as post and parcel boxes for residents and waiting/seating areas. A full array of amenities is located on the 4,070 sq ft first floor mezzanine level. These include a residents’ TV lounge, a social games lounge, an onsite 24-hour gym - including cardio, weights and a fitness studio - a private dining room, which can also serve as a meeting room, and a co-working space with integrated meeting booths and toilet facilities. The co-working space offers residents superfast free broadband and wireless charging points. The development also features 6,000 sq ft of outdoor space, including a courtyard and terrace, for which 74 created the external amenity design.
Design Concept
“When creating the design concept for the amenity spaces”, 74 Director Bianca Yousef explained, “we sought first of all to underscore the city’s connection to nature through a nature-inspired palette of blues and greens, together with the use of timbers and curved forms. Secondly, we were inspired by the city’s famous planning and grid system, which finds echo everywhere in the scheme, but especially in a series of ceiling and wall grid designs, whilst a third strand of inspiration is associated with the scheme’s name – Enigma Square.”
The development’s name references nearby Bletchley Park, the English country house and estate that became the principal centre of Allied code-breaking during the Second World War. Here, British codebreakers, including Alan Turing, broke the German Enigma messaging code in January 1940, a feat the Germans believed impossible, given its secret coding system offered 103 sextillion possible settings. Enigma intelligence and messaging traffic continued to be broken routinely at Bletchley Park for the remainder of the war, giving the Allies a firm advantage in wartime intelligence.
Integrated Art
The Enigma code was also of particular inspiration to artist Michael Murray, who produced 12 bespoke artworks for the scheme and had previously worked with both Grainger and 74 on The Headline development in Leeds. At Enigma Square, Michael’s artworks include depictions of the German Enigma machine and the British ‘Bombe’ de-coding machine, along with depictions of Alan Turing’s desk and of RAF Spitfires from the Battle of Britain, in which the code-breaking information provided by Bletchley Park played a crucial role.
Sustainability
A human-centred approach to design and social sustainability was taken at Enigma Square, creating spaces that improve physical and mental well-being and that can adapt to the changing needs of users or the user demographic by incorporating flexible spaces that encourage interaction, community and engagement. The social spaces at Enigma Square are designed to promote interaction
between residents and help build a community, with provisions such as a pool table, board games tables, TV lounge and interactive fitness classes bringing residents together and helping ultimately to build relationships. An area of the fitness studio can also be closed off with large bi-folding acoustic doors so that it can be transformed into a more restorative and relaxing space to practice yoga or meditate, allowing residents to have a quiet space to unplug. The joinery in the co-working spaces feature lots of integrated planters and loose planting, introducing the wellness benefits of a biophilic workspace into the scheme for residents. Natural materials such as walnut and colours such as soft blues and greens also provide connections to nature-enhancing inspiration and happiness. Dimmable lighting, easily movable seating and curtains that can visually separate internal spaces allow residents to adjust their surroundings to create a comfortable and calm environment.
Design Walk-through
When residents and guests first arrive in the scheme, they see the bespoke reception desk opposite, with the Enigma Square branding on the wall behind. The space creates an instant impression of relaxation through the use of rich tones of blue and green, but the space feels luxurious too, thanks to brass detailing, feature design elements and the scheme’s atmospheric lighting. A laser-cut circle, based on a rotor design within the Bombe de-coding machine, forms part of the scheme’s identity design by wayfinding and brand designers f.r.a. and features not only behind reception but also, in shades of blue, on the entrance matting as residents and guests first enter the space. The use of brass and brass-effect detailing throughout also links directly to the branding, including the scheme’s lighting. All feature lighting was developed together with Tyson Lighting.
Behind the desk, a team welfare space, WCs and back-of-house offices are located, with parcel lockers for residents along the space’s left-side wall and postboxes on the right. Over to the right is a dramatic double-height void, with large-scale feature decorative lighting hanging down into it in the form of a multi-hooped chandelier, which visually links the ground floor to the mezzanine amenity areas above. A waiting area seating set up is arranged along the glazed frontage. All loose furniture on the scheme was supplied by The Furniture Practice, with the exception of the external furniture, supplied by Workform.
The flooring in the entrance area is in a porcelain tile, featuring a triangular, geometric pattern in blues, greens and browns, inspired by the natural tones and green spaces of Milton Keynes, whilst the reception’s desk front tiles feature embossed dots and dashes as a nod to morse code, since the messages intercepted by Bletchley Park were transmitted via morse code. The reception desk itself features a solid surface counter-top and a vertically-tiled front. A ceiling raft above has brass inset mesh which mimics the grid system of Milton Keynes’s roads.
The mezzanine floor is long and flowing, with each amenity area merging into the next. The space starts with a social games lounge and events area, which cedes into a co-working space with glazed views over reception in one adjacent section at the top of the doubleheight atrium space. This is followed by a private dining room (which can also be used as a 6-person meeting room) which both faces and sits alongside elements of the co-working section. At the far end of the rectangular space plan are the three sections of the fitness offer – a free weights area, a classic cardio gym and a room for yoga and other interactive classes.
The social space, set up for board games, TV watching and pool, features a further grid system feature within the ceiling, whilst a feature blue wall treatment is decorated with a series of lines and triangles resembling leaves on stems and finished in a lacquered walnut veneer. Walnut curved armrests feature on faux leather banquettes around the pool table, whilst a bespoke light blue pool cue joinery cabinet features brass lines criss-crossing at angles.
The social spaces at Enigma Square are designed to promote interaction between residents and help build a community.
INTERIORS & INTERIOR DESIGN
Flooring here features the triangle motif once again, this time in brown, with a highlight darker brown section delineating the pool table. A large, square table with seating all round is perfect for board games, whilst a TV area features a curtain, which can be pulled back for high-viewing occasions, such as big sports games. The sofas in this area are deliberately low-backed so that people standing can easily see the screen.
The co-working space is set against light sage and dark green walls, extending the ground floor colour palette, and features a variety of seating typologies, from individual booths and long benches to adjustable chairs with a lounge look but enough ergonomic features for residents to sit on and work comfortably all day. Fixed seating includes banquettes, whilst individual seats can also double up for social use. Table tops are a light green-blue with green-upholstered seats, whilst, in one area, banquette back panels are a bespoke rollback design in sandy brown faux leather. Tables located by the glazed window can be used as overflow from the co-working area and feature under-table power for wireless surface charging. This area is also served by its own drinks station. Flooring in the co-working space once again features a tile with a triangular motif – this time in blue – whilst the ceiling grid above is in walnut with inset lighting.
The private dining room has at its centre a ceramic-topped table with a blue and brown grain and a brass base. The space features a kitchen facility and can also double up as a meeting room when required. The wall facing the top of the double-height atrium has both a voile curtain and a full curtain in blue, for varied settings and privacy levels. The flooring is a laminate in a herringbone timber formation.
“There was a really strong focus on acoustics in the mezzanine spaces,” 74 Senior Interior Designer Megan Jones commented, “with every possible acoustic solution available built into its ceilings, partitions and even curtains. Each zone on the mezzanine also had to be able to double up as social space, which meant thinking about multiple configurations so that the spaces could be organised for everything from casual lounge use to more organised social events or quiet working. Flexible partitioning in the form of curtains on tracks that can seal off or open spaces up also really helped with this.”
A further grid reference is located in the gym’s decorative wooden wall grid in walnut laminate cladding with mirror panels, whilst the gym ceiling features a black-sprayed soffit with a golden-brown mesh treatment beneath.
Tenant Experience
74 placed the resident at the centre of their design process to ensure an equally functional and aspirational space. The design was conceived with strong placemaking principles to create a home for every resident, helping to bring people together, create friendships and ultimately a sustainable community. Residents are met by a welcoming reception and entrance lounge which is flooded with natural light and designed using a subtle palette with an emphasis on natural materials. To keep the use of the amenity flexible, 74 provided a wide range of seating options to suit all needs and ensured all tables have integrated power. Adjustable-height loose chairs allow residents to work in comfort, and a special focus was given to the acoustics to ensure suitability for coworking, with the introduction of acoustic partitions, ceilings, panels and curtains. 74 have given thought to the fitness and wellbeing needs of residents and have provided a wide range of spaces to meet these requirements.
Richard Demby, Development Manager, Grainger plc, commented on the designs: “The amenity spaces are the heart of a successful Grainger development and add significant value to both the resident experience and the commercial value of the building. The brief was to create an amenity space that was multi-functional, but above all else brought residents together and created a community, recognising that some residents want space to themselves. 74 designed amenity space that has exceeded our expectations and aspirations.
74 have created a legacy with Enigma Square. All of the amenity spaces are very inclusive with areas to get away from it all. They designed through the lens of the developer, the operator, the asset managers and most importantly the residents to create outstanding amenities where every inch of the spaces is used. These spaces are inclusive and flexible, which allows them to cater for a broad range of end user and demographic. 74 designed spaces that enable Grainger to create a community for residents through friendships and bonds which in turn would mitigate voids and tenancy churn.”

Metallics
See our new collection!
A collection of 6 earthy tones with a luxurious iridescent shimmer which is visible throughout the pigment. This super matt, metallic surface is available laminated on MDF or dp-lite and is made from up to 40% recycled PET. Matching edging is available.
Over the years, hardly any other material has proven its worth in interior design to the extent in which the laminate has done. Looks, feel and function are combined to get the interplay of elements into all-embracing spatial concepts in a way that couldnt be more natural
Above all, it has always been the genuinemetal coated laminates and magnetic boards that are associated with the HOMAPAL name. Yet behind the scenes in Herzberg, many more variations of this modern material are created and produced.
It provides architects, carpenters and joiners in furniture-making and interior designs with the basis for producing the last word in creative design - in doctors' surgeries, bars, hotels, clubs and restaurants, on cruise ships and in shop fitting.
LRM HOUSE IN SÃO PAULO
DESIGNED BY ARCHITECTS AMANDA CASTRO AND GIOVANA GIOSA FROM STUDIO AG
The pedestrian access takes place on the left side of the site and invites the user to slowly discover the great span that brings light from the top to the entire ground floor. Before accessing the living room, a blue tribal character graffiti artwork from the Brazilian artist Crânio welcomes the guests. It serves as a protector of the house, as the residents like to describe it. This belief shows the essence of the family that makes a home out of the planned space.
Planning a house is presumably anticipating a spatial distribution that enables good use to a specific lifestyle. The house becomes a home upon the way of living of its residents, that tie their personal values, habits and behaviours to the inhabited spaces, which in this case, is the love for art, that can be seen and felt all over the house.
The project is thought out by the resultant atmospheres created by the solids and voids and how they are dematerialized. This concept reveals itself in the way the ground floor is designed, outlined by the dissolution of the following coplanar longitudinal axes: the solid volume coated in slatted wood, the gap materialised by the presence of the projection of the upper floor and the almost immaterial space created by the double-height ceiling wrapped in a glass façade with the zenith lighting.
This void is created upon the lateral detachment of the upper bulk that provides the users with the perception of implicit temporality. Different solar light beams throughout the day transform the house’s internal spaces, and light and shadow contrast with the desired monotony achieved by the choice of restrained and desaturated materials.
Along with the kitchen, a metallic pergola extends the usable space into an outdoor living area full of light and ventilation.
On the ground floor, the solid block hosts the kitchen, vertical circulation, half bath and technical area. This bulk extends itself down to the backyard, diluting the limits between interior and exterior. Large glass panels that can be fully retracted inwards are responsible for the closing of the horizontal plans, benefitting the air circulation and the amount of light that enters the space. Furthermore, the panels create the connection with the exterior area, where the laundry and outdoor kitchen are located. Along with the kitchen, a metallic pergola extends the usable space into an outdoor living area full of light and ventilation.
The upper floor comprises three suites - two positioned to the front façade and the other to the back - and a cosy living room for the family that organises access to the suites. Above that, a third floor, constructed to host an office, a small gym and a sauna, placed close to the open-air elevated swimming pool, with a privileged view of the famous Ibirapuera park.
The house was designed as an active façade. The curtain wall of milky glass is composed of fixed panels that take turns with bifolded windows that protect the bedrooms and filter the sunlight. On the side façade, the rhythmic design of the glass panels with different grades of opacity enhances the quality of light and shadow within the space. Such manoeuvre provides thermal quality to the house, which also disposes of a cistern for water reuse and photovoltaic plates for higher energy efficiency.

MAKING EVERY PAVER PERMEABLE
The increasing urbanisation of the countryside and changes in rainfall patterns has led to much higher volumes of surface water entering sewerage systems and water courses.
This, in turn, has resulted in higher instances of flooding in city centres, greater expenditure on new sewerage systems and insurance companies increasing premiums on properties built in vulnerable areas. One of the many solutions currently being promoted to help alleviate these problems is permeable paving. Traditionally specified and implemented via nibbed paving products that require a base and sub-base that allows the movement of storm water to drain through the nibs on the edge of the blocks whilst also effectively trapping suspended solids that filter pollutants from the water.
Hardscape offer a unique permeable paving system called Drainjoint which can be used across all types of natural and manmade hard landscape paving materials together with specific conventional pavers in both concrete and clay. Drainjoint allows for any material, be it natural stone, clay, concrete or even their popular Kellen range, to be laid as a permeable paving system which totally removes the need for pavers to carry nibs or extensions and the requirement for large aggregate joints that also filters pollutants from the drainage water. It also removes the need for paving to be laid to fall and additional surface drainage.

A BETTER FUTURE FOR OUTDOOR LIGHTING
SUCCESSFULLY REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT THROUGH DESIGN & FUNCTION
Installing outdoor lights in any location now carries the important responsibility to reduce environmental impact on natural surroundings and wildlife. After years of improvement, the professional luminaire specifications now fulfil both criteria of highly effective illumination, and less light pollution. Here’s what to look for…
GO SOLAR
Solar lights are a greener, more sustainable solution to 240v (mains) lighting, using a renewable energy source, and slashing the expense of energy and installation bills. Look for improved technology such as monocrystalline solar panels and high capacity, long-life LithiumIon / LiFePO4 batteries that retain charge efficiently. Certain ranges contain sophisticated in-built functions such as gradual dimming sequences from dusk to dawn.
Lumena Lights’ Pro-Solar Range and ViaMAX Solar Street Lights are guaranteed for up to 5 years and especially designed for UK weather, reliably illuminating for hours every night of the year. Over 4 years, the ranges have been successfully installed in larger gardens, public areas, hospitality venues, schools, and housing developments.
POLLUTION SOLUTION
To avoid light pollution, low level ‘anti-glare’ LED fittings are preferred. Pools of directional light shine downwards and bright light is diverted away from eye-level. ‘Glare shields’ or louvres further reduce unnecessary light spillage. Glare shields don’t mean less brightness; simply controlled, directed illumination. Nocturnal animals such as bats rely on darkness to survive, thus the phrase “Bat friendly” outdoor lighting.
For illumination without dazzling, opt for spread lighting designs (Charleston), angled louvered bollards (Boleda Range) and adjustable spotlights.
WARM GLOW
Previously, high output daylight white fittings (6000+ kelvins), were commonplace on larger-scale lighting installs. Due to blue light scattering via atmospheric particles, it is harsher on the eye and can have a negative influence on surroundings and wildlife, particularly bats. Studies show that colour temperatures of 2700-3000K, (warm white), result in much less distraction and disruption. Blue light deters bats which can result in them not feeding as they should, as some insects are attracted to blue light. Lumena stock many warm white Solar options as well as a brand new amber 240v LED lamp in ultra-warm 1800K – a great replacement for existing cool white LEDs.
MOTION SENSORS
A motion sensor (PIR / Microwave) controls fittings to illuminate when motion is detected but then dims or turns off when the area is clear. In comparison to constant lighting, this prevents light pollution and protects nocturnal wildlife from unnecessary artificial light. This also reduces energy consumption. Pair with solar to decrease your carbon footprint even further. Consider Lumena’s innovative, durable PIR path lights including both 240v and solar options.

LOUNY MUNICIPAL SWIMMING HALL
DKARCHITEKTI
By David Kudla, lead architectThis dynamically shaped, on all sides barely open crystal reveals the indoor world of a swimming hall on its south side. The outstanding overhang of the sloping roof surface with a sharp scarf of side façades enables two very different worlds to meet: one of a minimalistically dressed blue swimmer practising water sports in a wood-panelled space, and one of a random passerby wrapped in warm winter clothing. The tension of contrast between these two worlds is reflected in the rippling glass façade facing the public space that adjoins the neighbouring municipal office buildings. Through this mutual interaction revealing the secret of movement, local residents are invited to spend their leisure time actively engaging in physical activities.
The significant roof slope corresponding with the slope of the local terrain provides the necessary clear height for the pool hall, while its overhang regulates sun rays penetration for different seasons. On the other hand, the standard clear height on the north side of the object fits a pool bar, showers and a sauna world, which emerges from the crystal mass with its cooling terrace on the coldest side of the building with a view over the Bohemian Central Mountains.
The basement containing technologies, facilities and storage space is attached to the original terrain level difference. The use of this local given minimizes necessary terrain works. The upper floor is dedicated solely to the water and sauna world with a communication centre point at the pool bar.
On the west side of the building, there is an outdoor whirlpool and a water slide with a stairway tower, a symbol of swimming halls, positioned at the main road of the city.
The building aims to exceed the usual way of swimming pool solutions, typical for its shunning of views from the surroundings. On the contrary, this swimming hall opens up with the main glass façade and gives passers-by an insight into the sporting activities within. The placement of the swimming pool scene in the public space of the city thus naturally encourages to participate in sports and recreational activities inside the hall. With its openness, the object enhances a positive perception of the swimming hall’s area as a space intended for anyone, breaks down possible prejudices about the sports environment and motivates the locals to improve their physical condition.

ROOFING SEALED WITH APPROVAL
AS A LEADING UK MANUFACTURER OF HYBRID SEALANTS, BOND IT, HAVE SUCCESSFULLY ESTABLISHED THEIR “NEXT GENERATION” HYBRID LIQUID ROOFING MEMBRANE WELL AND TRULY ON TO THE ROOFING MARKET
Roof Seal, an easy-to-apply one coat liquid roofing membrane, is a modern alternative to traditional GRP, PU and bitumen roof coatings. It is highly reflective, solvent-free, non-flammable waterproof barrier formulated for professional roofing applications and requires no special training to apply. Roof Seal is designed to be used on its own, however, in more demanding situations it can be used in conjunction with a bleed blocker primer, accelerator (for sub-zero temperatures), reinforcement mat (for increased durability) and edging and trimming sealer, the system offers a high performance, permanently flexible, watertight, durable, weatherproofing barrier for all existing roof substrates.
Providing primerless adhesion on a wide variety of building and roofing substrates, it has excellent resistance to ageing, ultra-violet
and discolouration. It also provides water vapour permeability, allowing the surface to breathe. Under test conditions, Roof Seal was shown to have superb cool roof thermal properties outperforming black bitumen by 36% at just 0.8mm thickness. It was also 11.3% more efficient than solar reflective paint all helping to reduce energy costs.
Based on advanced hybrid technology, Roof Seal remains permanently flexible. It does not harden or soften under extreme weather conditions with very high stability to temperature variations (from -500C to +1200C), to UV radiation and to external chemical attack. It offers many benefits including ease of application, fast curing times, no solvent and virtually odourless and can even be applied on to damp surfaces. Available in grey in 2.5L, 5L and 20L eyecatching tins.

BÉTON HOUSE
TECHNAL FAÇADE SYSTEMS TRANSFORM AWARD-WINNING GRADE II LISTED SHEFFIELD LANDMARK
Early detailing from TECHNAL at the RIBA Stage 3 contributed to planning approval for – the third phase of the redevelopment of the iconic Grade II-listed Sheffield housing estate, Park Hill. The award-winning regeneration of the Brutalist-inspired building into student accommodation is now complete with TECHNAL aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling transforming the building throughout.
Originally completed in 1961, Park Hill is the largest listed building in Europe and is regarded as a significant Brutalist building of heritage. Designed by Whittam Cox Architects for student housing developer Alumno, main contractor Kier undertook the refurbishment work. The completed project provides accommodation for 356 students, which includes townhouses and a number of two- and four-bedroom apartments, and studios.
Inspiration for the scheme’s colour palette was derived from the Swiss-French Architect Le Corbusier.
Whittam Cox Architect and Associate Director Matthew Borland, explains the objective from a façade perspective: “Upgrading the old timber windows was a priority and one of the key planning requirements was to replicate the sightlines of the original windows.”
Working alongside the architect, TECHNAL and the construction project team collaborated early on at Stage 3 of the project. A solution was achieved in conjunction with close dialogue between additional stakeholders, including Historic England, The Twentieth Century Society and the statutory Local Authority Conservation Department.
Matthew continues: “The approach was to retain as much of the original building fabric and façade pattern as possible including the existing openings. We also wanted to avoid the opening lights looking ‘clunky’ when integrated into the glazing. “This is what led to the use of the TECHNAL FY 65 Minimal system, which offers a
minimalist frame and slim, subtle sightlines. But it wasn’t just the aesthetics, the building was thermally modelled and a U-value of 1.6 was required. The TECHNAL suite of products allowed us to meet our visual, performance and functional requirements, perfectly.”
Inspiration for the scheme’s colour palette was derived from the Swiss-French Architect Le Corbusier. Resulting in the iconic yellow and blue and ivory and black layers, punctuated with red pops of accent colour. The façade pattern was modelled fully at
ROOFING, CLADDING & FACADES
design stage to define the balance between the coloured and black elements. Assisting with the colour matching, all of the TECHNAL aluminium systems have been powder-coated jet black to RAL 9005.
Replacing the existing timber screens and original double timber windows, 930 TECHNAL SOLEAL FY 65 Minimal windows have been designed, fabricated and installed as combination frames of fixed and open in units by Bradford-based glazing and facade specialist Quest Solutions. The full height glazing to living spaces creates a bright and light living come dining area.
TECHNAL systems have also been installed to other parts of the building. The previously undesirable open colonnade undercrofts have been transformed into brighter more open spaces. Fronting the student hub and mixed-use units at this ground floor level, standard capped TECHNAL MX curtain walling has been installed with integrated louvers and opening lights for ventilation with the company’s STII doors installed to the main entrances.
Quest Solutions
said: “The wide range of product portfolio within the TECHNAL range makes it easy to create visual consistency across the building and from a design, fabrication and installation perspective makes things straightforward for us.”
TECHNAL is part of the Hydro Group, a world leader in aluminium solutions that also encompasses sister brand WICONA. Through its globally renowned Hydro Technology Hubs, the group is shaping a sustainable future, with innovative products that satisfy and surpass customer expectations, in line with demands of CSR and increasing environmental regulations.

ROOF SAFETY SOLUTIONS
MITIGATE THE POTENTIAL FOR FALLS FROM HEIGHT WITH BILCO UK
According to recent figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), falls from height were the main type of fatal accident for workers between 2021/2022.
Architects can mitigate the potential for falls from height by specifying compliant roof safety products at the beginning of a building’s design to provide maximum protection for contractors when working at height.
Bilco UK’s portfolio of roof safety solutions includes:
FIXED VERTICAL LADDERS
Fixed vertical ladders can be utilised across a diverse range of commercial and residential applications and can be installed on the exterior of a building or internally with a roof access hatch or smoke vent.
Manufactured from corrosion-resistant aluminium to meet the requirements of BS4211: 2005 + A1: 2008, the Bilco UK TYPE BL industrial Fixed Vertical Ladder is available in standard sizes for floor to ceiling heights of 2 – 6 metres.
If the ladder is to be mounted externally to provide access to a roof, it must be fitted with a safety cage and guard rail to ensure safe and secure access.
If designed to sit below a roof access hatch, at heights above 3 metres, a safety cage is required. Manufactured in aluminium to meet BS4211: 2005 + A1: 2008, these additional safety features prevent individuals from falling backwards or sidewards and ensure compliance with Building Regulations.
Additional protection can be achieved with the specification of Bilco UK’s unique Ladder Up® Safety Post. The telescopic post mounts permanently to the top two rungs of any fixed ladder, providing a secure hand-hold and enabling the user to enter or exit the opening in an upright and balanced position.
COMPANIONWAY LADDERS
For permanent access via a roof hatch where the rise is less than 3 metres, companionway ladders provide the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Manufactured from aluminium to meet BS EN ISO 14122-03 2001 + A1 2010, BS 4211-2005+A12008 and BS 5395 Part 3, the Bilco UK TYPE BL-COMP companionway ladder is manufactured in four height ranges up to 3 metres.
BILGUARD® 2.0
The BilGuard® 2.0 Fixed Roof Hatch Railing System provides a permanent means of fall protection around the top of roof hatch openings and has been developed to exceed OSHA Fall Protection Regulations (29 CFR 1910.23). The aluminium rail construction and non-penetrating attachment allows quick and easy installation on new or existing roof access hatches and smoke vents with capflashing. The self-closing and latching gate feature ensures the opening is protected at all times.
Bilco UK can assist architects in successfully meeting the unique requirements of their project, whilst providing maximum fall protection and compliance.

CLINIQUE OPHTALMOLOGIQUE THIERS
THE OPHTHALMOLOGY PRACTICE IN THIERS NEEDED A NEW VENUE WITH LARGER PREMISES TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASING NUMBER OF PATIENTS AND EQUIPMENT
The new building has an exterior façade clad with Laminam, an architectural envelope intended to reflect the quality of service offered within the facility.
A state-of-the-art practice
Like a futuristic vessel in the new Bastide district in Bordeaux, the HQ of Clinique Ophtalmologique Thiers attracts all eyes. Specializing in laser eye surgery since 1996, this state-of-the-art practice is the first in the Gironde department for cataract and retina surgery. A new direction that led to the extension of the building’s surface area (from 4,800 to 5,400 square metres), developed over five floors. The architecture of the practice was designed to adapt to the needs of patients and healthcare professionals, improving the patient experience, implementing new technologies and processes to offer an increasingly efficient and high quality service.
The first floor is reserved for admissions, administrative staff and consultations. The second floor is used for doctor’s offices and can accommodate up to 30 patients at the same time, while medical services are provided on the upper floors.
A large-scale architectural project
This level of care and service, designed with state-of-the-art medical technology, required the choice of an appropriate architectural envelope. That is why Laurence Taridec, head of the Thiers practice, turned to the TLR architectural firm, led by Mickaël Martin, to create the project. “The technical challenges we faced started with the shape of the building”, explains the architect. The exterior takes the form of an ocean liner, defined by clear architectural lines reminiscent of cruise ship design, with great attention to light and space and the refinement of materials; a spirit that is also repeated inside, providing an immersive and evocative experience for visitors.
In addition to the external structure, another of the rules imposed by the customer was to have the same material for the façade, roof and under-roof cladding. Hence the choice of ceramics: Mickaël Martin and his team opted for Laminam natural surfaces (about 2,500 m² of slabs were applied) because of their adaptability and large size. “We wanted to convey an idea of ease and spaciousness, both on the roofs and the façades, a design concept precisely conveyed by Laminam”, the architect continues. The versatility of this material allows it to be applied as a flooring, wall cladding, worktops and especially on façades. Furthermore, the suspension systems are understated and easy to implement.
Lasting results thanks to bioactive treatments
Gaëtan Plessis, Project Manager of Laminam France-West, proposed the Bianco Assoluto, Collection series product for this project: it perfectly met the aesthetic criteria of the building, both for the façade, roof and under-roof. Synonymous with purity, Bianco Assoluto is a timeless classic that, in its Polished finish, accentuates the brightness of surfaces. With its full-body color, it is ideal for remodelling volumes, giving a feeling of robustness and vertical thrust to exterior surfaces.
Like the other colors in the Laminam range, Bianco Assoluto is impact, scratch, stain and weather-resistant. For the Clinique Thiers project, the product underwent bioactive treatments to absorb and transform pollutants in the air (VOCs, NOx, SOx) and water into non-harmful elements. “The advantage of using Laminam surfaces
for outdoor cladding is durability over time”, explains Gaëtan Plessis. “Thanks to bioactive treatments, the onset of organic mosses such as lichens is delayed and the air is purified. This results in a façade that retains its beautiful appearance over the years. Laminam slabs are a perfect image of the company’s know-how and the excellence of Made in Italy.”
Laminam 5+, a sustainable certification
Laminam is the first large-surface manufacturer to hold a technical certification for its large-size façade application. Issued by the CSTB (Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment), the certification refers to the Laminam 5+ thickness with fixing clips. This is an additional cladding process consisting of ceramic slabs fixed to a vertical frame of aluminum sections by means of stainless steel clips. The certification authorizes the installation of Laminam products in dimensions up to 1000x3000 mm horizontally and 1000x2000 mm vertically, with a thickness of 5.6 mm. The Laminam slab can be installed on masonry or concrete walls and wooden frames.
This technical acknowledgement is proof that Laminam’s claddings offer a level of safety and quality comparable in all respects to that of traditional products and processes.
Professional skills for an exceptional envelope
All project stakeholders agree in expressing the satisfaction they had in conceiving this building and working together to construct it. Mickaël Martin points out: “Our team had a positive professional relationship.” For Gaëtan Plessis, “this project was an exceptional adventure, shared by us with many workers”. As for Laurence Taridec, she is delighted with the result: “We have a fantastic building, the exterior of which perfectly reflects the state-of-the-art technology and quality of service offered by our practice.

PROTECT YOUR HOME AND FURNISHINGS FROM FLOOD DAMAGE WITH AN AUTOSTOPCOCK
Over £1billion of damage is caused each year due to burst pipes and escape of water issues – a major peril that can be averted by installing an automatic stopcock from Autostopcock.
An Autostopcock is fully programmable and monitors the water flow in a building 24/7, terminating the mains supply in the event of a burst pipe or the home being left unattended for a prolonged period of time – preventing flood damage if a fitting fails, a pipe bursts or taps are left on.
Installation can be either during the build process or retro fitted and offers peace of mind for the homeowner or landlord.

STRAND HARDWARE MAKES ITS MARK
Strand Hardware has made its mark – completing UKCA compliancy more than a year ahead of the new deadline. It completed certifications for all its Panic Hardware product ranges – 290 products in total – at the end of last year, in preparation for the original deadline. The original deadline was intended to be 1 January 2023 but the Government announced an extension as many companies were simply not ready. The new requirement is compulsory for products which fall within the scope of a ‘harmonised/designated standard’ being made available for sale in the UK. They can continue to be CE marked until 30 June 2025 under a ‘presumption of conformity’. Strand Hardware Operations Director Jo Walls said that she was delighted that Strand was fully prepared and had made the transition ahead of schedule.

SKY UNDER THE TREES
The pavilion of the Czech Republic at the Universal World EXPO 2025 in Osaka, designed by Mjölk architekti, represents the Czech Republic as a place that people have taken care of for more than a thousand years. As a garden in the middle of Europe, which provides people with a place to exercise their immeasurable talent and creativity. Its inhabitants are able to find ways to protect their precious heritage not only for themselves, but also for future generations. The pavilion likens the Czech Republic to a shared landscape made up of millions of cultivated gardens with a single sky above. It shows the history, the present, and the environmental vision of the Czech Republic as a place of human creativity and care for the common space.
Sky Under the Trees
The concept of the pavilion is based on the idea of a garden in the clouds. The architecture, internal layout and dramaturgical concept allow visitors to physically and spiritually interact with the central idea of the exhibition. We want to show a relationship with the land, a love of nature as well as contemporary talents to be proud of and skills in which we excel. There are many great studios in our country that are creating challenging and globally successful computer games. We also have a first-rate ability to predict the weather. These
values are linked by the central work of a large-scale procedural projection placed under the garden ceiling, on which a believable impression of a blue sky is created with a program, as clouds change seamlessly and encourage the viewer to imagine. The work is a collaboration between artists, programmers and meteorologists.
The exhibition combines historical materials and instruments representing a quest to understand natural phenomena with technological and environmental visions on the theme of landscape care and sustainability. Visitors thus see side-by-side measuring instruments from Prague’s Klementinum dating back to the mid18th century and a recent discovery by Brno scientists in the field of bioluminescent technology, which enables plants to produce light. Participants engage in the story through interactive elements, educational and gaming technologies. The purpose of the exhibition is also to present Czech art in a broader context and therefore also includes works by Czech designers, glassmakers, architects or even sound installations and musical compositions.
Architectural design
The pavilion represents a cloud, hovering over the heads of visitors, who are drawn into the heights of the garden
THE EXPO 2025 PAVILION BY MJÖLK ARCHITEKTI IS A WELCOMING WOODEN BUILDING CONCEIVED AS A GARDEN IN THE SKYPhotos: Mjölk architekti
On the way up, they are accompanied by a stream fed by rainfall, of which there is no shortage in Osaka. The pavilion’s interior engulfs visitors, allowing a view of the sky created by the projection. The ground floor is a public space with a covered atrium. Two staircases connect the entrance area with the second floor. Individual unique 3D-printed steps form a micro landscape right in the middle of the building, a touch of nature in an orthogonal system of wooden columns and panels. The second floor is dedicated to Czech cuisine, the way the interior is arranged encourages interpersonal contact. Above the gastro corner is a multifunctional auditorium that is actively integrated into the curated dramaturgy of the pavilion, a multimedia stop on the way up.
On the last level of the building, two worlds - the sky and the garden - interpenetrate. The sky under the garden roof is both an exhibition space and a venue for private events. In the delicate web of the load-bearing structure, artistic artefacts intermingle with functional objects. The indoor exhibition has direct access to the garden terraces.
The garden, too, is an exhibition space, a territory for children’s play and a place where visitors can relax and also contemplate under the trees the direction our fragile world is heading.
The landscape design of the pavilion is a reminiscence of the mosaic structure of the Czech landscape. The roof landscape of the pavilion is varied, with different heights showing the diversity of surfaces, the structure of stems, trunks and branches, the texture of leaves and the changing colours during the seasons. On the roof, a small brook springs up and weaves its way through the pavilion, ending in a pool in the parterre. The surface mirrors the clouds, the visitors and the entire exhibition, reinforcing the idea of tying people’s lives to the weather, the cycle of the year and life.
The central motif of the garden is also transferred into the form of contemporary floral illustrations. The abstracted flowers of marigolds, sunflowers, morning glories, poppies, four-leaf clovers and brooklily leaves are depicted with a delicate stroke of a line, loosely referring to the technique of Japanese calligraphy and the delicate illustrations in Karel Čapek’s The Gardener’s Year.
The principle of the design is a building that is not just a box for
exhibition pieces. The building is meant to represent the Czech Republic as a work of art, therefore the design reflects contemporary building technologies and traditional Czech know-how. This philosophy is also reflected in the interiors, which are furnished with high-quality Czech products and the leftover material from the CLT panels.
Environmentally friendly operation and transport
The pavilion is designed as a prefabricated wooden building made of glued timber and wooden panels laid in a square grid. Emphasis is placed on premium appearance, optimum thicknesses, high load-bearing capacities and precise joints. The building envelope consists of CLT panels in combination with double glazing. The gallery space under the garden is clad with laminated glass slats. The walking surface in the parterre is a brushed concrete slab with recycled material from construction debris. Natural light is provided by the glazed parts of the façade and the open atrium. The primary energy source for hot water heating is waste heat from the building cooling and grey water effluent. The green roof serves to improve the microclimate, natural cooling and rainwater harvesting. The water is filtered through the root system of the green roof and further used, among other things, for fine mist sprinkling and central irrigation of the roof garden. The entire building is designed in a passive standard, with a consideration of its possible future dismantling and relocation. The logistics of construction were also taken into account in the design. The panels, beams and additional structures are designed for easy container transport, assembly and disassembly.
Materials
The building is designed with a combination of CLT panels and BSH (glued laminated timber) beams, which clearly defines its materiality.
The timber structure is complemented by 3D-printed concrete staircases and a subtle steel roof superstructure, which is covered by a ventilated float glass façade system under the living roof. These materials permeate the entire design. We are not trying to hide them, we are revealing them in their natural beauty.

BREAKING NEW GROUND
NEW HERITAGE VALLEY IS A ‘GAME CHANGER’ FOR PLAIN TILE & SLATE ROOFS
‘Innovation’ is a word that tends to be over-used these days. However, GRP roofing products specialist Filon Products is receiving widespread accolades for its new Heritage Valley design, which breaks important new ground in the pitched roofing sector.
Designed for use with plain tile and slate roofs, the Heritage Valley combines the proven benefits of GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) construction, with the classic, heritage aesthetic of a close mitred valley – previously only attainable with lead soakers.
HERITAGE AESTHETICS, WITH LOWER COSTS AND PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES
GRP is much lighter than lead, completely non-toxic and because it has no scrap value, it’s not subject to any risk of theft. In addition to these advantages, the Heritage Valley also brings significant cost savings when compared to lead.
Firstly, the material cost of GRP is lower, resulting in a reduced initial outlay – and with no specialist lead working skills required, labour costs are reduced too. Further savings are delivered by the innovative design of the product itself.
Steve Makin, one of the design team behind the Heritage Valley, explains: “The unique, dry-fix ’S’ design of the Heritage Valley maintains a wide drainage channel but has a much narrower span between the tile support ledges. This design eliminates the need for costly valley roof tiles on plain tile roofs. With the short span between support ledges, there are no unsupported small cut tiles or slates, so no additional tile support pieces are required and the quantity of slate / tile and a half going into the valley is significantly reduced: another huge cost saving.” He continued: “Also, no special eaves closures are needed. With no gaps at the foot of the valley to fill, the fascia board is simply square cut to fit the valley trough profile.”
GRP DESIGN AND PRODUCTION TEAMWORK AT ITS BEST
GRP is an outstanding construction material, but presents challenges in product design and production, which have until now, limited the extent to which various product features could be employed.
Filon’s Technical Consultant, Steve Vickers, has been closely involved with the project since its inception. He said: “Bringing the Heritage Valley to market has involved intensive teamwork, as it’s the most complex profile we’ve ever produced. We’ve always encouraged a culture of continuous improvement and openness to new ideas at Filon and this latest achievement is down to the hard work and collaborative efforts of many people.”
Designing tooling to create the unique ’S’ profile of the product, was just one of the challenges faced. Technical Supervisor Matt Camp put the design
into CAD format and designed the many different sets of tooling that were necessary to achieve the exact profile required. He commented: “In the early stages, the material simply didn’t behave as we expected it to. Tooling for GRP production always requires refinement and adjustment and this was a particularly demanding product to get right.”
Production Manager John Charles was tasked with overseeing production trials and keeping the team motivated throughout a long period of trial and error which eventually led to the solution. He added: “There’s often no shortcut with GRP. One of the biggest challenges we faced was the very small time window required to get the material to working temperature. We’ve now firmly established all the production parameters, which means we’re able to manufacture in quantity to our regular lead times.”
FILON: A LONG TRADITION OF INNOVATION
Filon has been a leader in GRP construction products for over sixty-five years, having pioneered the original GRP profiled sheets manufactured by continuous pultrusion process in the 1950s. Filon also manufactured the first continuously produced GRP valley troughs as an alternative to costly lead products in the 1980s.
Managing Director Mark Wilcox concluded: “The Heritage Valley complements our existing valley trough range and meets a specific need in the roofing sector. It further supports our claim to be ‘The innovator in GRP construction products’. I offer huge thanks to the brilliant team that have turned this outstanding idea into a practical reality with a realistic price point”.
