Bank is Fully Protected by Remmers The facade of a Grade 1 listed, four storey high building in London required extensive stone and concrete restoration. Concrete & Corrosion Consultancy Practice was appointed as technical project managers for the refurbishment works. The ornate stone and cornice banding of the facade were being corroded through excessive weathering. Remmers protective coating systems were chosen to meet the highly demanding specification and multiple facade finishes including Limestone. Repairs were carried out using Betofix R2, a high build, fast curing concrete repair mortar. Remmers Restoration Mortar was also selected for its ideal restoration and reprofiling properties for masonry as well as ornamental building elements. Finally, Remmers Elastoflex Facade Paint was applied for its excellent anticarbonation characteristics, resistance to weathering and crack bridging ability. The works were completed within budget and ahead of the tight program, to the clients delight!

As I prepare to sit down with Jason Bailey and Tony Rodd on this brisk January morning, they enter the room with that familiar broad smile on their faces and who can blame them, Solution have just turned 8 years old and Jason and his partners have created a market leading brand. Solution was born in 2006 and has organically grown to fifteen staff. Tony joined Solution two years ago to help Jason set up the new office in Shoreditch to accompany their head office in Hertfordshire to spearhead Architectural and Interior Design roles. Together they bring 20 years’ experience and exceptional sector knowledge. “Recruitment consultants all claim to offer unique services” says Tony. “They interview their candidates, take references and fill up your inbox with the same boring emails. There’s nothing new here. But we’ve come up with another approach. Yes we interview our candidates and yes we still try to call in the middle of your Monday meeting, but we’re offering some real innovations to the recruitment process.”
An acquired Taste...?
“Ever wished you’d met an applicant before you invited them to an interview…you know within minutes if they’re right or not for the role?” Jason asks me? “Well we are using a video profiling tool created specifically for Solution. It gives our clients an opportunity to see a two minute introduction from the candidate. This has proved invaluable for our clients when it comes to selecting an engaging, presentable and well spoken individual.” And Jason proudly tells me Solution offer this service for free when they recruit for a practice. There is no stopping Jason now… “As you know there are smart phones everywhere, so we have created a mobile phone app that means our candidates and clients can keep in touch on the go. New roles are all uploaded to the app and candidates can browse these at their leisure. The app can be found on iTunes and in the App Store, people should check it out!” I ask Tony about the working life at Solution. “Flexible working is all the rage. Why should you work in old fashioned ways? That’s one of the reasons I came on board (Tony previously spent 8 years in a commercially run agency). We only send clients a CV if it’s appropriate. We’re encouraged to pop out to meetings in the middle of the day, and we offer transparency in all our methods.” 8 years in existence and surviving a recession Solution now boasts both regional and London offices. Speaking to Jason and Tony you can clearly see why there are exciting times ahead for Solution!

Industry Pioneers return to the UK Laticrete International is set to make a welcome return to the UK Tile Adhesive market after nearly fifteen years away from these shores.
The globally proven worldwide Adhesive manufacturer was founded in Connecticut, USA by Dr. Henry M Rothberg in 1956. Dr Rothberg, a chemical engineer, was inspired by the post war building boom in the US. He transpired to make ceramic tiling easier, faster and more affordable to install. By inventing a thin bed adhesive from liquid rubber and Portland cement, he actually invented what we now call today a ‘Thin Set Adhesive’. Making Europe his first port of call and working with Villeroy & Boch in Germany and Langley’s of London in the late 1950’s, he used European attitude to new working methods to create a thin set adhesive which is still on the Laticrete product portfolio today – LATICRETE L4237. Since then, Laticrete have shaped the industry with innovation and market firsts and led the way in product presentation, technology, technical service superiority and specification. Forty years ago Laticrete was ‘setting the standard’ for the industry ‘service format’ to which most adhesive companies now aspire today. Laticrete is still a family run business where David Rothberg and Henry B Rothberg are CEO and Senior Vice President respectively. Henry B Rothberg commented “As a world leader in innovative tile & stone installation materials, methods and technology Laticrete continues to grow with an expanded effort and presence in the United Kingdom. Laticrete offers a dedication to quality that result in globally proven solutions for virtually every application”.
Scolmore provides integrated approach for new lighting installation More than 850 of Scolmore Group’s Inceptor LED Downlights are providing a low energy lighting solution in a new £3.5m Apart-Hotel which was recently opened in Piccadilly, Manchester. Following Manchester City Council’s decision to approve the change of use of the 41,500 sq ft Abacus Court office building - it is now being transformed by SACO Hotels to accommodate the city’s latest European-style Apart-Hotel and will be known as SACO House upon completion during summer 2013. Inceptor was specifically chosen above competitor products because it provides a solution to the issues surrounding restrictive ceiling voids. Inceptor is a high light output, high performance product that can be fitted into a recess depth of just 60mm - making it one of the most flexible fittings currently available. Scolmore has also integrated its popular Flow Connectors into the product, which make it quick and easy to install, as well as to remove and replace for the purpose of circuit testing - another positive when selecting the right products for the job.
For further information, contact Scolmore on 01827 63454, or visit www.scolmore.com
Laticrete was first to create thin-set adhesives, to create thin load bearing waterproof membranes, develop sound & anti-fracture one step mortar’s, offer warranties inclusive of material and labour, offer antimicrobial protection in products, the first to achieve low VOC Greenguard certification, the first tiling school in the world and the first to offer an epoxy grout that is considered the easiest and most application friendly epoxy grout system to be manufactured; LATICRETE SpectraLOCK.

ELESGO® Electron Beam Cured Acrylic Surfaces: Tough, Resistant … yet Eco-Friendly DTS Systemoberflächen GmbH’s ELESGO® laminate offers a unique eco-friendly durable surface for many different applications. This Acrylic based system is instantly cured with high energy electron-beam radiation. This produces a very durable surface offering Scratch Resistance, Chemical Resistance and Water Resistance; whilst expending less energy than other curing processes (which are usually thermal). The surface is also warmer & more pleasant to touch than normal laminates. This is due to the special thermal conductivity of the material.
High Gloss Flooring with ELESGO® surface
ELESGO® surfaces are free of Formaldehyde, Vinyl and VOC’s. This is another reason why they are so eco-friendly. DTS’s process can provide different surface finishes from Deep Matt to High Gloss, as well as Wood Grain and other effects.
Archetech - Issue 14 [Page 12]
DTS works with manufacturing companies who apply ELESGO® to different substrates to produce a range of finished products for different applications including:-

flooring (including high gloss finishes with excellent scratch resistance) exterior panels interior flush doors door frames/skirting boards window boards lab grade worktops furniture surfaces
Some advantages of using ELESGO® door frames and profiles (eg. skirting) is that these can be installed early in a construction programme and not require the “wet trade” at the end to apply paint. Such “fully finished” profiles are proving popular in speeding up construction projects and reducing overall costs. Window Boards produced with ELESGO can offer similar advantages. Recent developments include work to develop a new type of Exterior Grade Panel using ELESGO® on a special wood based substrate for Exterior Applications (façade panels) or for water resistant Interior Panels. Also, with the right surface finish, a Slip Resistant Flooring can be produced which is extremely durable and potentially used externally. DTS are exhibiting at EcoBuild - stand N1426. Come to the stand to see examples of the types of products our customers can produce using this exciting technology.

Archetech - Issue 14 [Page 26]
The site for this house is at a prominent bend in the road, where an old drover’s track meets a large oak tree marking the boundary of this small rural village. The existing building was an introverted former Baptist’s chapel suffering from subsidence. We realised that in replacing it we must design a house that took full advantage of the site’s long views across farmland to the west, whilst doing justice to its position and registering the memory of the chapel – still remembered with fondness by the villagers. The building’s unusual composition resulted from a considered response to its local and historic context. In plan, the building is broken down into two slim, offset blocks, in keeping with the scale of the neighbouring cottage. The block facing the road has an apsidal form; a ‘memory’ of the demolished chapel, and shields the set-back rear block from view. This approach creates a dramatic skyline with the house’s tall brick chimney appearing to float between the two distinct halves of the house. The two storeys of the house are distinguished on the outside by the white brick plinth of the ground floor, and the pale render and tile hung walls of the upper floor, echoing local vernacular construction. This distinction between the floors is carried through internally with the expansive living space of the first floor contrasting with the private sleeping quarters of the ground floor. The ground floor is dense with detail and materials, including oak, black stone and a white brick vault. The complex plan adds to the intrigue, creating a comfortable and private series of spaces that feel as if they are carved from the weighty brick plinth. The cave-like atmosphere heightens the contrast with the light, airy living space of the piano nobile above. This lofty space fills the entire volume of the first floor, under an undulating roofscape, and enjoys spectacular views across the countryside through 4m high windows, set between a series of columns. A low central section creates an intimate area around an open fireplace, with two free-standing walnut cabinets defining the kitchen and study areas. The house and garden were designed as a single entity, carefully integrating the project into its site. A long brick-edged strip of planting extends from the house continuing along the central axis. This is planted with lavender, which follows the underground routes of the rainwater harvesting and heat pump: a visual indicator of the sustainable technologies that have been integral
to the design. This house engages with its wider landscape and fully utilises its unique setting, giving the clients a dramatic and comfortable home and continuing the variety, scale and material richness of the village. Client’s Brief: The clients’ converted former Baptist chapel in Plaistow, a small rural village in West Sussex, had ceased to be viable due to subsidence. They decided to demolish it and build a new, two storey, 3 bedroom house on the site, which would be sustainable, take better advantage of the site, incorporate an office, and allow them to entertain up to 10 dinner guests. Planning Constraints: Plaistow is a rural village with a Conservation Area at its heart. The Sussex vernacular predominates. The new house occupies a prominent position at one of the entrances to the village. The tight site has a road bordering its eastern side; to the west are open fields. Chichester District Council engaged in a constructive dialogue with the architects, culminating in the proposals being approved by the planning committee. Materials: Externally, the house makes use of a white brick for the ground floor, and for the first floor a mixture of self-coloured render (made using recycled glass), and tile hanging, re-using the roof tiles from the demolished building. It has a lead roof. Windows and doors are timber, external railings are galvanised steel, and paving consists of granite sets and blue-black limestone. Internally the ground floor has stone floors and walls, oak panelling and a vaulted ceiling lined with white brick. The first floor is predominantly white-painted plastered masonry, with oak floors and walnut built-in furniture. Method of Construction: To counter any further subsidence the house is built off a piled deck, and uses masonry cavity wall construction. A beam and block floor spans the first floor, with an in-situ slab tying together the two halves of the building. The roof is steel and timber-framed. Sustainability: The house uses a ground-source heat-pump for heating and cooling; recycles rainwater; and is designed using passive solar techniques to make use of thermal mass, with south-facing windows set in deep reveals to limit solar gain in summer and increase it in winter.

THE DESOWOOD REPAIR SYSTEM
DESOWOOD RAP SPECIFIED ON WILLIAM MORRIS GALLERY – A GRADE 2* LISTED BUILDING. CONSERVATION OF SASH WINDOWS The William Morris Gallery built in the 1740’s has undergone extensive repair and refurbishment. The windows showed typical problems of in-situ wood decay around the joints and particularly the horizontal cills, open construction joints, and breakdown of putty. “The essence of conservation is to keep as much of the original timber as possible” The Desowood Repair System allowed the removal of wood decay in insitu – so that as much of the original timber can be retained and helped to maintain the original character of the windows. The Desowood SAP / RAP allow any size repair – horizontal or vertical to be completed in one application. The Desowood Repair System proved particularly effective on the arch / round shaped windows. Any mouldings can be matched to retain the original character of the windows. The Desowood DAP – a durable alternative to linseed oil putty is particularly effective in preventing or minimizing the incidence of wood decay.

Architectural Overview A holistic approach of positioning the user at the heart of the design process shaped the architecture around both the functional and social aspects of this project. Architects are acutely aware of the value of good design, not only for the ability to ‘lift the spirits’ but also for the added value it brings to the community, believing that good architecture is fundamental the school and that education is ultimately about economic and social regeneration. In essence, the quality of the environment delivered through architecture can bring about lasting positive cultural change. Structural Philosophy The structural requirement was learning environment by providing a 7m clear span between external and internal CLT walls. This improves
the general building arrangement, consisting of two advanced teaching spaces either side of an internal corridor. Working closely with the manufacturer and specialist contractor team from the X-LAM Alliance, a 20m super XL panel was selected to span the full width of the block. This permitted a structurally speed of erection. The project is one of the largest cross laminated timber schools in the UK, featuring a hybrid structure design, using a combination of CLT and structural steelwork to create spaces that respond to the architectural design drivers. A cascading, visually exposed CLT staircase forms a central hub to the Academy. Careful structural design was required in order to maximise the visual impact and showcase the aesthetic appeal and natural warmth of the exposed engineered timber. CLT is also used to great practical
as well as accelerating follow-on packages by integrating architectural and building services opening requirements into the fabrication process. ONSITE STORY Site conditions proved far from ideal and the team experienced heavy rain, wind and snow throughout the 22 week construction period. This presented particular challenges for panel unloading, erection and associated plant movements. The health and safety considerations around moving panels of this size on site with large plant were considerable and required careful scheduling. Consequently additional planning was required to schedule deliveries of materials to coincide with panel lifts as part of the erection sequence. These operations added to the total crane time on site and required stringent monitoring. In total an astounding 1,988 white wood spruce cross laminated timber panels and 184 tonnes of steel were delivered, over the course of the 22 weeks, in 57 loads.

OUTSTANDING RESULT FOR SUPACORD AT NEW ACADEMY
S C H O O L
CONSTRUCT
An Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ Academy in Norfolk has chosen Supacord carpet with inlaid bespoke logo mats from Heckmondwike FB to create a distinctive new identity and to help achieve its vision of becoming a ‘World Class’ learning establishment. The new Ormiston Venture Academy, which replaced the former Oriel High School in 2010, required over 2,600sqm of Supacord fibre bonded carpet and three bespoke logo mats installed as part of a £8m refurbishment and new build extension. A brand new ‘entrance plaza’ provides the focal point for the new academy. Heckmondwike FB was called upon to reinforce the school’s brand identity in this key area by producing a bespoke flooring design which incorporates the schools logo and colours. The robust properties of fibre bonded carpet, which will not ravel or fray, meant that contractors B & K Systems were able to cut the Supacord carpet on site to create a complementary flooring design.
Archetech - Issue 14 [Page 44]
Supacord in Steel Grey was used extensively in the school throughout corridor areas and in some of the classrooms. These colours from the Supacord range create a neutral base for bright vibrant furniture to be added to create a stunning effect. Widely specified in secondary schools, these colours are recognised for their positive effect on pupils’ mood and concentration. Sam Thomson, Finance Director at

Ormiston Venture Academy, said: “We are delighted with the flooring design in our new entrance plaza. It really sets the scene for the rest of the school and supports our vision to become a world class academy. We are confident that it will provide a long-term, cost-effective solution thanks to its durability and ability to withstand the demands of the busy school environment.” The school will also benefit from the durability of Supacord, which is renowned in the education sector, where it is vital that floorcoverings are able to withstand heavy wear and tear. On projects like this, where sustainability is important, Supacord has been assessed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and has gained a BRE Global A+ environmental rating for use in school buildings, offices and retail outlets. The academy building has been transformed by the £8m refurbishment which included extensive remodelling of the existing building and the addition of a new two storey block, classrooms and facilities. The aim of the refurbishment was to create a University-style building, including a tiered lecture theatre, to encourage the aspirations of its pupils and the local community. Heckmondwike FB is one of the leading carpet suppliers to the education, commercial and public sectors and is well-known for the excellent value, durability and high performance of its products.

Sustainability, Eco-Friendly & Shabby-Chic… What do planners want? Nowadays, we’re hearing the words ‘sustainability’ and ‘eco-friendly’ all the time. And it’s absolutely right!! Taking the sustainable approach is one of the few ways to contribute towards safeguarding our planet for generations to come.
Archetech - Issue 14 [Page 46]
So how do we do this and still achieve durable, practical and aesthetically pleasing results?? Most folks now appreciate the beautifully elegant & warm finish wood floors can give, against the alternative cold harsh finish of stone or marble, or the high maintenance & unhealthy & unhygienic option of carpets. Although there’s a fairly new arrival that’s starting to shake things up a bit in the wood flooring world – Shabby Chic. The ‘Shabby-Chic’ look is the current ‘thing’ to have and we’re finding that, when it’s done in a complementary manner, the results are astounding. We’re going to look at some of the ways this can be achieved with maximum effect. Ok, so we’re focussing here on one of the most effective ways to create amazing results and give the biggest impact to the planners, customers and, most importantly, the planet – real wood floors!! We’ve spoken to Joseph Piner from FloorSandUK.com, an expert in renovating real wood floors, to hear his viewpoints. Joseph has over 20 years’ experience in the field and has travelled the globe renovating wooden floors for the domestic market and, now more so, in large area, commercial environments. Joseph and his considerable team work with Local Authorities around the country and are branching out alongside hotel chains, historical building owners and major building contractors countrywide. Joseph mentions; “One of the best parts of our job is revealing the hidden treasures that already exist in the floors of most properties of any age. Wooden floors, more often than not, have been covered in carpet, protecting the wood from extensive damage but allowing it to age gracefully, to later create an amazing degree of character. Wooden floors, when sanded and
lacquered, provide one of the most spectacular looks to a room and can give an incredible level of impact to any renovation plan”. Of course, it’s great that this enables us to retain our buildings’ existing materials but there’s also a real reason why reclaimed floorboards are vastly more expensive than new floor boards. It’s because of the natural age of the wood – the older the wood, the more stunning the result. And that’s exactly what an aged wooden floor does when it’s renovated correctly – it stuns the onlooker. One of the first things that comes out of people’s mouths when they enter a room is, “Wow, I love the floor!” As if we couldn’t ask for any more, the advantages of renovated wooden floors go much further and are a lot closer to home. Although the long term benefits to the environment are indisputable, we don’t have to wait generations to really feel the benefit of wooden floors. Joseph Piner goes on to mention the immediate health benefits: “We’re being approached now, more than ever, to renovate floors because of the immediate health benefits. Incidences of Asthma and numerous other allergies unfortunately seem to have escalated over the last 20 years or so and we know these are exacerbated by excessive dust levels and harbouring dust mites. Coupled with a far easier cleaning procedure than that of alternative floor coverings, renovated wooden floors overcome this major health problem”. Be warned, this procedure can go terribly wrong if not done correctly, so be well aware of this. As great as the results can be, conversely, it can give catastrophic results when done badly. More often than not, this is down to inexperience or poor product knowledge of the contractor, so pick a competent floor sanding company with extensive experience in the floor sanding trade and, preferably, one that specialises in floor sanding and nothing else. Oak Floors Online
www.oakfloorsonline.co.uk 0845 459 3073
Oak Floors Online is rapidly becoming well known for the high quality of their products and service, along with an honesty that’s quite frankly a ‘breath of fresh air’ within the flooring industry. Not content on simply selling oak flooring and its related products just to make a profit, Oak Floors Online make every effort to help and advise every customer about how natural oak flooring performs in various environments, so that each person can make an informed decision on whether or not it is the correct and suitable choice for their own situation. Many companies steer away from the truth about potential issues with oak flooring and its installation, but Oak Floors Online actually highlight them from the beginning in an aim to ensure that the customer sources the product they want, and knows how it needs to be maintained thereafter. “It’s better to lose an order than to supply the wrong product or information to simply ‘get the sale’ because if the sale goes wrong thereafter, it leaves the customer unhappy and out of pocket, whilst giving the product and industry a bad reputation” says Will Morris, the Director of Flooring Operations and Development for Oak Floors Online. It’s this honest approach that has helped Oak Floors Online grow over the last few years, whilst developing many ongoing relationships with satisfied customers who return time and time again. Rather than stock hundreds of different flooring products that may confuse potential customers, Oak Floors Online choose to keep a selected range of, in their opinion, the most popular and desirable finishes available, and at very competitive rates. This is backed up by a passion for quality that often exceeds what the most demanding customer expects, thus providing the perfect mix of attributes for a successful business that puts its customers first. Free samples of all oak flooring products are available via the website at: www.OakFloorsOnline.co.uk
The pre-drilled Birch plywood underside reduces thermal resistance, so improves UFH performance and efficiency, even with a full 6mm oak wear layer. The heat from your UFH system travels through the board faster and more easily, making your UFH more efficient, and so saves you money on your heating costs
Looking for structural oak flooring for installation over UFH? Look no further… Innovation is at the forefront of everything that happens within Oak Floors Online, and one recent development may solve a problem for many Architects and Project Designers when it comes to specifying or recommending suitable oak flooring for installation over Under Floor Heating systems. Oak Floors Online have developed a unique product called ThruFlow, which is a 22mm thick engineered product with a full 6mm wear layer
of oak that’s heat-bonded to a high quality Birch plywood underside. This plywood underside has a precise pattern of holes drilled accurately and sufficiently into it during manufacture to reduce the thermal resistance of the finished product, whilst still maintaining the structural strength and stability that’s required for these installation situations. Thermal resistance for the 22mm ThruFlow is significantly better than a standard 20mm or 21mm engineered product, so allowing the UFH system to work more efficiently whilst the floor performs robustly and effectively within the

most challenging of UFH situations. The ThruFlow is currently only available as a Brushed & Natural Oiled finish but other finishes are planned for the future, when Oak Floors Online have gathered more information about market demand. Linked to and supported by a successful Timber Merchant and Roof Truss Manufacturer, Oak Floors Online can provide anything and everything to do with timber, including any bespoke shape and size of oak that may be required.

GGF Launches New Safety and Security Glazing Good Practice Guide The Glass and Glazing Federation has recently launched a new publication entitled, “Safety and Security Glazing – Good Practice Guide”. The new guide covers the use of safety and security glass and glazing in buildings including not just windows, doors and curtain walling but also interiors such as shower enclosures and elevator enclosures. The guide also details the key performances of safety and security glazing when subject to manual, ballistic and explosive attacks. Other areas concerning the safety of persons such as overhead glazing, protective glass barriers, glass stairs and floors are also comprehensively covered. The guide, which effectively brings all the key information on safety and security glazing into one publication, is primarily aimed at informing architects, specifiers, building planners, surveyors and building managers. Steve Rice, Director of Glazing and Secretary of the GGF Glazing Executive, has been instrumental in the production of this publication by collaborating with several Industry experts who sit on the GGF Safety and Security Technical Group. Steve commented, “This publication plugs a huge gap in the current industry information on safety and security glazing. Companies in the Industry have been waiting a long time for a comprehensive authoritative publication that not only covers the subject in detail, but also supplies the technical datasheets for reference, to help companies manufacture and install security and safety glazing to prevent or resist accidents occurring.” Every Member Company has been sent a printed copy of the safety and security glazing – Good Practice Guide, but it also available for download in the GGF Members Area of the GGF’s website; www.ggf.org.uk/publication/safety_and_security_glazing_good_practice

Calor LPG – low carbon energy beyond the gas main Calor’s experience suggests that the benefits of LPG are often not considered, when replacing an oil boiler. With many old oil boilers running at below 50% efficiency the temptation has been to simply upgrade the appliance to a better performing modern oil-burning equivalent. However, switching to a new LPG boiler can deliver much more. LPG prices tend to be more stable than oil prices, so switching to LPG enables clients to budget more accurately. Furthermore the overall running costs of a system, its capital cost and true operating efficiency, is an area in which LPG can beat oil. Working with Blades Low carbon Systems, Calor can now offer LPG heating solutions that operate at even higher system efficiencies than new oil systems. Calculations indicate that the savings achieved more than offset any additional costs associated with switching fuels. The Blades boiler system has been designed to deliver up to 97% heating system efficiency, working with a building’s traditional hot radiator system. By contrast, many oil boiler systems seldom run anywhere near their quoted boiler efficiency of 95% when heating an existing, old radiator system. Instead they typically run at around 85% efficiency. Having established that running an LPG system can actually be cheaper than oil, CalorForce, Calor’s in-house engineering and installation team, can undertake any necessary work to switch from oil. The supply contract, tank and pipework installation, plus the physical heating solution can all be offered in one simple end to end process. Calor can even arrange removal of your existing oil tank and boiler. The advantages of LPG for commercial users in off-gas areas go much further than cost-saving and convenience. LPG is the lowest carbon, offgas mains fossil fuel, emitting 11.7% less CO2 per kWh than oil. Oil leakage is becoming a major concern for commercial users, costing some businesses thousands of pounds in clean-up costs and fines. Unburnt LPG is carbon neutral, and simply evaporates into the atmosphere. Similarly oil is relatively easy to steal, whereas the theft of LPG is rare. LPG is now widely recognised as the most appropriate fossil fuel for providing heating and hot water to modern, low carbon, off-gas industries and businesses.

Heating and Cooling Fight! A fight for control over the temperature is often played out in my house; I prefer a cooler environment than my more tropically inclined partner. Behind the scenes a more costly battle is often taking place and it’s between far more obstinate rivals. The controllers of heating and cooling systems often fight for supremacy as one cools the other decides heat is needed and vice versa, resulting in huge energy bills and a total lack of comfort for the end user.
Absolut XPERT System Chimney
Thankfully a simple solution is available: Commander from North Building Technologies provides an intelligent link between heating and cooling systems that prevents such conflict, improves comfort, and can provide huge energy savings. Commander can intelligently interface to Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Heatmiser, Honeywell and many more. We also have our own range of underfloor heating and HVAC controllers. Commander has a web interface compatible with Apple and Android tablets and smart phones, which gives the user full control of temperatures and time profiles. Opticlean – a diffuser that won’t stand out With over 45 years’ experience in air distribution products, Krantz has developed the Opticlean, a new generation of ceiling diffusers.
Now you see it...
Now you don’t!
THE NAME KRANTZ IS RENOWNED FOR QUALITY AND INNOVATION of air distribution products. With over 45 years’
experience in this field and the pioneers of induction (twist/swirl), displacement and up-flow systems now commonly used around the world today, Krantz developed the Opticlean, which takes the next step in new generation ceiling diffusers and offers discrete, high induction air supply.
So what’s it all about?
The unique design incorporates the standard ceiling manufacturer’s suspended ceiling tile (16-23% free area) as its faceplate and is therefore almost invisible once installed. Furthermore, the induction is created millimetres from the face of the diffuser so room air is not induced into the plenum. As a result, the amount of dirty room air accumulated on the face is very low, ensuring the Opticlean remains unobtrusive years after installation and will very rarely need cleaning – unlike conventional swirl diffusers. Further test work has shown that these tiles, without scrim backing material, can also be used for extract, removing the need for additional grilles/ diffusers and ensuring both supply and extract systems (ducted or ceiling void) achieve maximum performance and minimal aesthetic intrusion of the suspended ceiling system. No longer will the spacing of diffusers be compromised when once the symmetrical appearance was preferred over the technically best possible layout.
Architectural dream
The Opticlean has been referred to as an ‘architectural dream’ due to its unimposing design. This, coupled with its technical abilities of air volumes from 17 l/s to 222 l/s, temperature differentials of ± 10K, mounting heights from 2.5-4.5 metres, low sound power level and pressure loss (suitable for fan coil units) and high occupant comfort to DIN EN ISO 7730, the Opticlean is also the friend of the mechanical engineer. All the usual features you would expect for ceiling mounted diffusers are also available, including small side entry plena for low or congested ceiling voids, dampers and segment covers for 2-way and 3-way discharge. The Opticlean can also be retrofitted with little modification to an existing ceiling system. The Opticlean has quickly become a firm favourite with installations at The Shard, Finsbury Circus House and ExCel, London. Andrew Grint, Project Director of Hilson Moran commented “We have found that the Krantz Opticlean has become very popular with many of our clients and have completed projects including BCO ‘Best of the Best’ winner K&L Gates, One New Change, London. In this application Opticlean work well with FCU’s benefiting from low Pd while achieving good room comfort conditions without having to compromise on the clean, modern look that many of our customers want to achieve. Clients and Architects like the fact that they are hidden behind the perforated ceiling tiles to achieve clean lines and unobtrusive room aesthetics.”

A family-owned and run Cotswold business
Nomad Ideas Started 11 years ago with my eldest daughter Emma, Nomad Ideas is a family business which sources unique and beautiful kilim rugs from Turkey. Using these rugs we create bespoke furniture, home accessories, shoes, bags and many other lovely things for you and your home. Istanbul and our contact there soon became a the business after she gained a distinction in a three year course from The Association of Master Upholsterers. She works using the traditional methods so the beautiful old kilims have a chance to live another lifetime on a piece of furniture.
We also sell the rugs themselves. GL Optic has designed a product to solve the challenges of the modern lighting industry and growing LED markets. This handheld spectrometer can be used for everyday quality control of luminaires, lighting engineer field work, lighting design & planning, and by any lighting professional who needs quality, reliability and accuracy in their light and colour measurement. The GL SPECTIS 1.0 touch is perfectly suited for fast assessment of light sources during production, quality control and design development. The GL SPECTIS 1.0 touch integrates the performance of a high-end spectroradiometer into an intuitive, handheld, touch-screen device, making it the world’s first intelligent “smart” spectrometer based on the popular Android mobile-device OS. Critical photometric data is displayed on the 3.2” colour touch display interface, integrated Wi-Fi connectivity makes data transfer and analysis easy with the optional GL SPECTROSOFT PC software, and on-board temperature compensation provides excellent measurement stability and accuracy. Battery life is up to 6 hours and the removable 4Gb micro-SD data storage can auto-save many thousands of spectral power distribution (SPD) readings between 340-750nm at a high 1.7nm spectral resolution. Among the most important features of the instrument are its
high sensitivity optics, innovative miniature stray light reduction technology and temperature compensation algorithms, providing excellent signal to noise ratio of 1000:1, spectroradiometric accuracy to ±4% and colour coordinate uncertainty of just 0.0015. This allows the GL SPECTIS 1.0 touch to deliver accurate, precise and reliable results even in situations where signal strength is very low. The device comes with a cosinecorrector optical diffuser to allow the user to simultaneously record lux, colour coordinates and rendering index measurements from a full 1800 hemisphere. Quick change accessory probes allow similar characterisation for surface luminance (candelas/ m^2) of emitting displays or reflecting surfaces, and individual LED luminous output (lumens) for performance testing and supplier-spec verification. Further photometric evaluation is easily accessible through GL SPECTROSOFT, including metamerism indices, colour/brightness binning, spectral comparison tools and a fully customisable report generation wizard. Mikolaj Przybyla, brand director of GL Optic, said: ‘A number of advanced technologies have been combined in the GL Spectis 1.0 touch to produce a unique portable instrument. At last users can enjoy the convenience of using a compact instrument without having to compromise on measurement quality.’ To learn more about the GL SPECTIS 1.0 touch and other products from GL Optic, please visit http:// www.analytik.co.uk/dedicatedlight-measurement-and-testing. htm. When installer Phil Davies needed to cut some holes in some heavy wrought iron gates, he decided to ironwork handforged tryexceptional a new bi-metal saw offered by a in Yorkshire by skilled craftsmen wholesaler. Mr Davies needed to drill eight pieces of 6.5mm 1/4-in steel plate and four pieces of 25mm/1in wrought iron. Despite using engine oil as a lubricant for the cut, the new saw failed before the first cut had been completed. With a job to complete his only option was to try a used Starrett hole saw that had already completed several hundred holes in 1.5mm/1/16 in steel plate. ”I got stuck on a job with a part-worn Starrett and two new cheaper versions. The cheaper saw ripped up on the first hole, but the Starrett saw flew through the lot. It just proves how good the product is” said Mr Davies. Hamilton understands the pressure its clients are under to source suitable materials for each job at the right time, the right price and the right quality. Fit for purpose and right price are often contractors’ first priorities but clients, especially interior designers and commercial specifiers, are under additional pressure to come up ithsomething outstanding and stylish. Both offer opportunities to up sell and improve customer experience. Ian Hamilton, Managing Director of Hamilton Litestat says; “We always recommend going back to core values. In an ideal world its best to always choose innovative but simple to use products. Ease of installation and reliability are everything. Without those a project can take twice and long - the last thing anyone wants is to be constantly called back to a job long after it is finished to fix unresolved installation problems. We therefore advise our customers to do their homework; researching the best of what is available on the market - new designs, styles, and trends.” RRN Enq No. 273

We begin our process by making a full site survey, checking the site suitability and power requirements are in place before making any plans. Then in collaboration with the customer, we make a 3D scale design of the proposed installation,
which can be anything from two counters together, or a complete model of the premises. Once the design ideas are finalised we then schedule the delivery and installation at a date and time to suit the customer. Carriage is always made on one of our own highly regarded delivery fleet, and installed by a team of experienced engineers who are on hand to deal with any unexpected complications with the installation. Our engineers will not leave the site until the customer is satisfied, the counter is running and the waste has been taken away for recycling. An extensive range of styles,
sizes and finishes are what is setting MAFIROL installations above other bespoke solutions on the market today, our limits extend as far as your vision and we haven’t even mentioned the competitive pricing yet, we ‘re sure you’ll be surprised at the value for money they offer. Introducing invisible solar energy – the ideal solution to conservation and planning constraints. Solar Slate recently launched the new Solar Slate Multi, which effectively offers the same superior aesthetic that the Solar Slate Traditional boasts but in a larger format. This means a lower material cost, faster installation and all round better value. The panel is manufactured to match standard 24” x 12” ‘Duchess’ slates and is effectively 4 slates in a single panel. Solar Slate is ideal for use in conservation areas, listed and historical buildings, new builds, sites where standard solar panels are not an option, renovation projects and has an unrivalled track record in gaining planning approval. Solar Slate can also be installed at Off-grid locations. Whilst Solar Slate this year will not be at Eco Build it is resident permanently at The National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon.
Archetech - Issue 14 [Page 78]
The project above, being a grade II listed building in Bath, a conservation area and an area of outstanding natural beauty, posed significant planning problems. Standard solar panels were refused by the LPA so samples of Solar Slate were submitted by the homeowners, which gained approval. This installation provided a 2.1kWp system without compromising the visual appearance of the property or the local area. Installed by a traditionally skilled roofer in conjunction with an MCS accredited electrician, Solar Slate’s product allows the property owner to receive the government Feed in Tariff reward for the next 20 years so gaining further security of their electricity supply price. Solar Slate will be highlighting its new Solar Slate Multi, which is designed in a much larger format than the established Solar Slate Traditional. The Multi offers a better value for money solution by efficiencies in manufacture and in being quicker and simpler to install, whilst retaining its superior aesthetic appearance Channel 4 presenter and designs guru, Kevin McCloud, said; “It is the ideal solution to generating electricity without affecting the
aesthetics.” Mike Atkinson, Managing Director for Solar Slate, commented; “We are delighted to be showcasing our exciting new ‘Multi’ product which extends our class leading Solar Slate product range. The ‘Multi’ provides the same superior aesthetic benefits as our ‘Traditional’ product but with a significantly simplified installation process, and the benefits to our customers that this simplified installation entails.” The Solar Slate has won the award for ‘Product Innovation of the Year’ at the Low Carbon Performance Awards, organised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE). Fibre cement EQUITONE [tectiva] has been used to create a sustainable facade for a low energy, timber frame modular building installed at the Building Research Establishment (BRE) Innovation Park at Ravenscraig in North Lanarkshire. Marley Eternit is working with Hoos to demonstrate how innovative approaches to sustainable design and construction can improve the built environment. Architects at Hoos, based in Glasgow, chose an EQUITONE architectural fibre cement facade material because it can achieve an A+ rating as defined in the BRE’s Green Guide to Specification based on generic rating for autoclaved fibre cement single sheet - (Element Ref: 80623042, 806230422, 806230447, 806230450). EQUITONE [tectiva] was chosen in Pebble, with its characteristic fine sanded lines, natural occurring hues and through colour, creating a natural yet unique aesthetic effect for the modular building.

The key to achieving the best results from your signage is to work very closely with your chosen signs manufacturer. A good signage company will be experienced in working with architects at all stages of a project, from initial planning and during the build, through to signing off. Julian Rowlandson, Director at Stocksigns encourages the following methodology “you need to develop a relationship with an organisation that has adopted a ‘cradle to grave’ approach. Get your signage company involved from the initial design stage, to breaking ground and completion of the project. Many signage companies will also provide ongoing maintenance and support if required”.

The client’s brief was for a replacement high quality contemporary dwelling that would take advantage of the site’s topography, with its gently falling gradient which falls away from the road to expose stunning views across the surrounding Cheshire landscape. The site located in the Conservation Area of Halebarns, Manchester was originally occupied by a 1970’s single storey dwelling, overgrown with its associated landscaping that neither utilised the setting and its
surrounding landscape, nor provided the client with the required accommodation to suit their needs and aspirations of a family home. The plan and form of the building responds to the orientation and views from the site, whilst taking advantage of the 8m fall on the site. The building principle is formed by two one of which incorporates a double height living space that has been lowered into the existing gradient of the site, whilst still respecting the existing covenant on the site for a single storey structure (based on the original structure). Due to falls of the
site the entrance into the building is via two bridges, one concrete vehicle bridge into the upper level garage, or the lightweight steel and glass pedestrian bridge onto provides a view through the double height living space and towards a single silver birch tree, and new external landscaping beyond.
towards the undergrowth of the surrounding trees. The corridor almost becomes an external space between the two wings of the bedroom block due to its frameless glass and
(that are concealed by the concrete louvers) creating a transparent view of the surrounding environment. This corridor provides access The main stair descends into to all the bedrooms (including the double height space, with en-suites), gym and study via full height pivot oak doors. that also leads you down The various rooms utilise the corridor of the bedroom concealed full height and block, with its suspended width glazing, with expressed pre-cast concrete louvers sliding doors elements, that provides both views extends into the landscaping and private access into the through the frameless glass, surrounding landscape.
The double height space of the living space is dominated by the 5m tall, full width glazing to the south, with its external oak louvers at high level (providing suitable shading to the internal space during the summer months, whilst permitting shafts of light to penetrate the space during the winter months), accompanied by the 8m tall chimney structure that penetrates the roof. The kitchen is adjacent to the living space, and provides numerous views through the living space, and back up towards the road and bridges. The two spaces can be separated by a full height x 4m sliding oak door. The client’s requirement for the interior was that it is simple in its detail and appearance, so all the grilles associated with the air conditioning, blind boxes, glazing frames, door frames, and storage spaces etc have been designed so that they are not visible, and do not detract from the simple form and clean lines of the building, and its surrounding views. The building is constructed of load bearing blockwork walls, with supplementary steel structure to achieve the required spans, and pre-cast system with a Jura limestone rainscreen cladding stones and associated stainless steel drips. >>
Oak has been used throughout the building, with the external doors and louvres, being oiled oak which have been utilised to ‘soften’ the facades, whilst internally we have used a and white oiled oak for all the full height internal doors. The landscaping and entrance gate have been designed in conjunction with the house, providing subtle statements that compliment that architectural design of the house, and provides glimpses of the internal detailing of quality of materials used. It is unfortunate that available by constructing their own house using an architect – both in terms of quality of product and value for money. Our client’s have enthusiastically entered into this project and we believe the outcome is not only rare but may constitute to showing the possibilities to a wider audience.

If you have a project that justly Arup really pushed the boundaries and reflects this criteria and you would like to highlighted the possibilities. be considered to speak in the Timber Focus seminar programme – the event organisers Not only is this an exceptional opportunity
for architects and engineers to showcase outstanding work, but equally, the event presents the chance to network with a global audience. Creative Installations As timber is so tactile and visually striking, Timber Expo is looking for creative installations to extol the virtues of this sustainable, strong and adaptable material. At Timber Expo 2013 Worldscape was the focal point of the exhibition. Conceived and designed by the ground-breaking agency, Atmos - Worldscape was the vision of architect Alex Haw with the core design principle of the world unified - collectively united at a single bench. This unmissable piece of timber design formed the visitor lounge and at the entrance to the event Nacho Marti’s, Expandable Surface System created an eye-catching centrepiece. Based on work undertaken with partners Jacob Bek - the Expandable Surface System seamlessly links materials properties with geometry and structure in a morphogenetic bottom-up process, using 6.5mm birch plywood sheets.
The organisers set out to ‘fire the imagination’ and showcase what is possible in timber and they certainly have at previous events, with an impressive structure designed by teams of engineers from Ramboll, Pryce & Myers and Enginuiti. Affectionately christened ‘the giraffe’ by the TRADA team, one installation, created out of plywood, inspired by a gridshell sculpture, spread like a tree across the foyer.
