Acrylicize Gets The Ark into a Spin Acrylicize the award-winning art collective and consultancy has created a unique sculpture in the design of a spinning top at the iconic Ark building in Hammersmith. The client Helix took over the management of the building in 2013 and began to oversee a programme of refurbishments designed to enhance the overall experience for tenants and visitors. Acrylicize were appointed to create an art installation in the expansive entrance area that enhanced the incredible space. The answer was SPIN.

Archetech - Page 6

Celebrating The Ark’s unique and architecturally iconic building; ‘the spin top’ enables viewers to closely engage with its beautifully bright and dynamic surroundings. The classic style spinning top provides a playful way to reflect its environment in a fun and engaging way from every angle. The spinning top is one of the oldest recognisable toys found on archaeological sites in the UK. Through research of the buildings location Acrylicize learnt about the Neolithic tribes, Bronze Age remains and Roman settlements that would have occupied this area of London. Known for its gyroscopic properties, the spinning top guides the viewer through the building. The gyroscope is used in many navigational systems, and makes for a subtle nod to the nautical shape and the name of the building. The 3D reflective aspect of the spinning top gave Acrylicize a playful way to reflect the space, and the form invokes a feeling of movement, energy and balance when presented in the slanted frozen form.

Angela Duru, Director of Assets & Property Management Helix Property commented:

‘’The imposing piece provides a focal point for our customers which helps support our place making efforts to transform common areas into inspirational and useful spaces’’

Are you BIM readY? Building Information Modelling (BIM) attempts to standardise the creation and exchange of information to make the design, construction and operational management of a facility or infrastructure asset more efficient. It is important to note that BIM is not just about buildings, but in its wildest context is being applied to facility, building, road, railway, and infrastructure projects. It is also now very much impacting organisations throughout the supply chain including manufacturers, fabricators and interior designers. For many facilities, more information will be created during the operational phase than will be created during the design and construction phases. Structuring data at the outset and quality controlling it through all phases of a project will bring tremendous benefits. BIM is often wrongly

associated with just graphical (often 3D models) information. This is only partly true. All forms of correspondence form part of the model: specifications, risk registers, manufacturers technical information, preventative maintenance schedules could all form part of the BIM for example. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016. Making the right choices to begin your BIM journey and maximise the return on your investment is critical. Man and Machine offer a variety of solutions and services to help you understand the impact of BIM and the market opportunity that it presents throughout the supply chain. The solutions and services include BIM-based products, modelling and measurement solutions, BIM deployment programs, training and consultancy.

Gate Way to Manchester (Manchester Oxford Road) Manchester’s Oxford road is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment throughout 2016.

T

he proposals include over 4k of major bus priority lanes and Greater Manchester’s first ever ‘Dutch-style’ cycle lanes which will see people on two wheels segregated from the traffic. The scheme has been revamped following a major public consultation with nearly 900 residents. Sudstech has already provided approximately 1500m2 of sustainable permeable paving in pedestrian areas to aid congestion along Oxford road from the 70,000 plus students that make the area their home every year. Oxford road has had past issues with drainage and surface wear due the ever increasing amount of foot traffic in pedestrian areas. Manchester City Council subsequently chose Sudstech as it alleviated these problems whilst also remaining completely SUDS compliant .

Archetech - Page 12

The newly installed surfacing is extremely hard wearing and anti slip and because of the products versatile nature it has also been utilised on a number of Innovative new tree pits included within the Oxford road scheme. T - 0161 212 1617 E - info@sudstech.co.uk W - www.sudstech.co.uk

The Sudstech permeable paving system is an eco-friendly SUDS-compliant , water management solution, developed for both the commercial and public sectors. Unlike other resin bound surfaces the Sudstech system utilises a unique sub-base comprised of resin bound aggregate and recycled tyres. The slight flexibility offered by our unique sub- base allows finds that would usually facilitate weed growth to agitate through the surface ensuring the system will never clog. Unlike other resin bound products water is able to freeze and thaw within the Sudstech system eliminating the risk of frost damage

such as cracking and delamination. The Sudstech system has been developed over the past 10 years and has been rigorously tested at the British Research Establishment (BRE) for both impact and freeze-thaw. The use of a Sudstech surfacing could achieve up to 3 BREEAM under the revised 2011 rating. Sudstech requires no additional drainage, minimal ground works and virtually no maintenance across it’s life span, making it one of the most cost effective paving products on the market today.

CRL shines the spotlight on the winners of its Venturous Builds campaign

Holme Hall Manor BEFORE

Holme Hall Manor AFTER

CRL has unveiled the winners of its Venturous Builds campaign – a new web series that will showcase Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements.

To launch the campaign CRL launched its logo into space calling self-builders to share the details of their builds. The winners’ projects were then filmed for the online show.

A contemporary family eco-home, a renovated Grade II listed mansion and a custom built eco timber house have been selected by CRL as being truly venturous of spirit.

English designer and regeneration expert Wayne Hemingway hosts the Venturous Builds web series with the first episode now live on CRL’s Youtube channel: https://www.c-r-l.com/venturous-buildswinners-mr-roy-austin-family-eco-home/

CRL CEO Steve Mansour said: “We were looking for the one-offs, inspiring and ingenious to feature in our series and our winners clearly demonstrate this. “Venturous Builds celebrates the pioneering builders who have dared to dream big and have created the homes of their dreams.”

Venturous Builds – the winners are: Roy Austin – Rosedene, Redruth, Cornwall After failing to find anything suitable to cater for their young disabled son, Roy designed and built a contemporary, modern, family eco-home. Roy said: “Having worked in architecture, I felt it would be more cost-effective to build something from scratch rather than buying and adapting a house to cater for my son. We are delighted to be living in our dream home.”

Archetech - Page 14

Berkshire Homes – Holme Hall Manor, Cliviger, Lancashire Holme Hall Manor is a beautifully renovated Grade II listed mansion converted into 10 one bed and two-bedroom apartments. Harrison Kiely, Berkshire Homes, said: “Holme Hall has been an incredible project. The rebuild took six months to complete and the residents who have a lot of memories of this magnificent building were thrilled to see it restored to its former glory.” Barbara Fischer-Clark (Stommel Haus) – Heartwood, Aboyne, Aberdeenshire German manufacturer of timber houses Stommel Haus was commissioned to develop an eco-timber house. This stunning property is insulated using recycled materials and heated using ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”. Barbara Fischer-Clark said: “Heartwood is a fantastic bespoke home. The combination of the owner’s eco-commitment and technology makes this property stand out while delivering the home of their dreams.”

Leading specialist engraving company, Brunel Engraving, has engraved over 500 bronze and stainless components at Shakespeare’s New Place, a contemporary heritage landmark site in Stratford-uponAvon, which opened to visitors on 20th August. The site, which was Shakespeare’s family home from 1597 until his death in 1616, has been transformed by The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Designed to reveal a “window on the world of William Shakespeare for the 21st Century”, it features beautifully landscaped gardens and specially-commissioned artworks celebrating the famous playwright’s life and works. Over 18,000 people visited the site in the first month of its opening.

Brunel Engraving Makes Its Mark on Major New Heritage Site match exactly and their thin borders had to be perfectly aligned. Some components took over three days to engrave due to their size, weight, the complexity of the image and depth of engraving.

All of the intricate engravings, inscriptions, designs and lines from sonnets and plays featured throughout the site are the work of Brunel Engraving, from the inscription on the oak and bronze Gateway which forms the entrance to the gardens, to the intricately designed pattern work etched on bronze circles throughout the grounds. The pattern which runs throughout the site was specially designed to reflect the Tudor era.

Archetech - Page 16

Over 500 separate bronze and steel component parts in varying sizes of arcs and flat bars were each individually engraved by Brunel. The arced pieces featuring intricate pattern work which formed different sizes of circles had to

“We had to maintain total accuracy in the patterned pieces, as the design dictated that a fine border of 1mm ran around the arc and that the pattern in each arc matched perfectly at the join”, commented Martyn Wright, founder and managing director of Brunel Engraving. “Some components required a 4mm engraving depth which made the process more complex. This was a detailed and time consuming job requiring intricate precision and attention to detail which our experienced, specialist engravers completed successfully and to schedule. “We are very proud to have made a lasting mark on this beautiful heritage site in Shakespeare’s home town of Stratford. It will attract visitors from all over the world for many years to come!”

Replacement Balustrade

A great many character or period properties have stone balustrade incorporated into their design. These balustrades make a large visual impact, but they also have a practical purpose as barriers and screens.

Archetech - Page 18

A common cause for the demise of a balustrade is the presence of water. Many original balustrades were made from artificial stonework such as Roman Cement, Concrete and Stucco. These were often reinforced with iron or mild steel bars which rust and expand when exposed to water over a long period.

See The View Not The Window Unit 32, Telegraph Hill Industrial Estate, Laundry Road, Minster CT12 4HL 01843 825573 | info@arcvis.co.uk www.arcvis.co.uk

Other balustrades were made of natural stone such as Portland Stone or Bath Stone. While these types of balustrade do not suffer from ‘blown’ reinforcing, they do have a finite life span and the surface of stonework will often delaminate or form powdery patches.

With its Ecolabel approval, Ecopro Lo Sheen Emulsion on new lime plaster perfectly fitted the University’s sustainability ethos. The architect Gordon Broady said "Lime plaster has a prolonged curing time and we required paint systems that would both allow the walls and ceilings to dry out gradually and also self-regulate moisture in the walls when the building is occupied. “The University of Manchester Directorate of Estates and Facilities promotes the use of water based breathable paint systems as part of their long standing and wide reaching commitment to environmental sustainability. In operation, all feature gas-air heat exchangers where the incoming air is superheated then directed to both primary & secondary combustion ports and door glass, giving very clean burn and ‘airwash’. The refractory metal used for the firebox allows even corrosive fuels such as driftwood to be burnt without affecting their lifespan. From beautiful and bespoke lighting products, such as vintage light bulbs, fabric lighting cable, ceiling lights to designer light switches, dimmers and plug sockets. In late 2015 we launched a range of hardware products that included toggle switches, dimmers and plug sockets. James Dowsing-Reynolds, founder and Director of Dowsing & Reynolds, first set about designing the range after moving house and was unable to find any that he loved for his new home. He struggled to source any switches or sockets that were not only well designed, different from the usual sea of white plastic, but also affordable too. Affordability is often key, especially if you’re doing the whole interior, not just a socket or two. The black and white ranges always sell very well, but more recently we have noted that our tarnished copper switches and sockets have increased in their popularity due to their industrial style and raw finish; which is basically what our brand is all about.

We recently exhibited at 100% Design at Olympia, London. Our stand featured the switches and sockets and they proved a big hit with both architects and interior designers, noting they were of fantastic quality, great price, and something they hadn’t seen before. All key factors when sourcing the best products for interior projects. Due to the popularity of the range and customer feedback, we’ve recently added new products to the collection including triple toggle and dimmer switches, fused spurs and cooker switches. We are now developing new designs and products to extend the range even further, and they will be available early next year. THE PERFECT TOUCH

E

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell.

Archetech - Page 28

In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

Vaughan Civic Centre Resource Library

ZAS Architects + Interiors

Resulting from an extensive visioning process exploring the evolving role of the library in the digital age, The Vaughan Civic Centre Resource Library by ZAS Architects is a visionary maker-space dedicated to community learning, gathering, creating and celebration. Engaging new users in record numbers since opening, the transformative community centerpiece aims to empower local residents of all ages and demographics, inviting an exploration of learning in the library with the tools and technology of the 21st century.

Revealing layers of open interior spaces, the reflective façade appears ever-changing in a constant play of light. It’s complex geometry forms a loop around the central interior courtyard, it’s pattern shifting glass panels representing the overlap of ideas and user groups who gather inside.

In contrast to the monochromatic exterior façade, colourful furniture and glass animate a fluid series of bright spaces, balancing open meeting areas with places for private study. Dynamic natural lighting acts as a guide throughout the space, directing visitors as they explore the collection. Prominent and visible from the library’s entrance and also around the building is an anchoring outdoor garden courtyard and symbolic red maple “Tree of Knowledge”. Collaboration spaces, meeting rooms, a ‘teen-only’ lounge, public-access computers, a large study hall, and an extensive children’s activity area form a circle around the courtyard, representing a circle of community.

Page 31 - Archetech

The library’s ethereal façade and shifting translucent form beacon the community, making a clear statement that this is a meeting place created for the future of the city.

Marking a transformation from traditional historic library architecture, flexible spaces create an empowering community amenity, encouraging social interaction and group learning. Akin to a contemporary bookstore, the library’s marketplace café, and open reading area welcome visitors as they enter the immersive environment.

Archetech - Page 32

From the café to the central outdoor courtyard, the vibrant two-storey facility hosts extensive public activity space far beyond the library’s collection of books. Accessible for all, visitors are encouraged to animate ideas within the library’s maker-spaces. Computer modeling and 3D printers, a media suite, sound recording studio, video studio and green screen all creates hands-on opportunities to learn, discover curiosities and hone craft. Multi-generational and diverse, each space within has been designed to foster learning for wide-ranging user groups. Students from primary school to post-secondary, new Canadian residents, teens, toddlers and parents have all been given spaces to learn and connect with one another in social interaction zones that includes flexible furniture arrangements.

Indicative of a library’s ‘function in –flux’, highly flexible, movable book collection stacks offer flexibility for librarians and visitors to use the space in multiple ways, as the needs of the community evolve daily or annually. Exposing residents to new possibilities of discovery, public areas are transparent and visually interlinked. Expansive glazing at the street level engages all passing by to join the activity inside. Social zones, lounge seating, and individual study space also surround the perimeter windows, maximizing light and views while creating a direct connection with the neighbourhood beyond. www.zasa.com Image Credit www.doublespacephoto.com

FRONTLINE BATHROOMS MAKES A STATEMENT WITH NEW BRASSWARE RANGE 2016 has seen the launch of some of Frontline Bathrooms’ most exclusive products to date, from its brand new Aquanatural range of solid surface products to its high tech bathroom sound system. But one element that is often overlooked, yet could make a real difference to the style of a bathroom, is the brassware. The new ‘Spa’ range of brassware has been selected to extend Frontline’s existing Aquaflow Italia collection. Manufactured in Italy to an extremely high specification, Frontline’s Spa products focus on a luxurious bathing experience with water, light and aroma combining to create an intense sensorial setting in the comfort of your own home. The exclusive electronic basin mono combines intelligent technology to regulate the supply of water, the adjustment of the flow and the temperature mixing. Incorporating an LED band of light around the base of the lever, which changes colour in harmony with the temperature of the water, the tap also uses energy saving technology to produce a flow of cold water regardless of the position in which the handle was left when the water was turned off, thus avoiding unnecessary start-up of the boiler. The light and colour of the basin mono are also reflected in the chromatherapy/ aromatherapy shower head, which contains four colour-changing LED lights with the options of either vigorous rain jets or atomised water to invigorate both body and mind. Plus,

three special fragrances can also be utilised to complete the sensory experience. Operated by an easy to use, waterproof, touch screen control this is the ultimate shower head for a true spalike experience. Michael adds: “The new ranges that have been added to our Aquaflow Italia collection are of the highest quality and design specification. Produced in Italy, these are statement products that will create a focal point for your bathroom at the same time as providing a luxurious bathing experience. The style and design of the brassware is sleek and sophisticated, ensuring versatility of use within any setting.” To find out more about the new ranges from Frontline Bathrooms you can visit the website at www.frontlinebathrooms.co.uk where you can view the products in more detail, download the brochure to your desktop or order a hard copy free of charge. Saniflo provides the solution for sunken homes

Archetech - Page 38

An award-winning housing development in Ealing, London was made possible thanks to an innovative pumping solution from Saniflo. Heath Lodge is a row of 9 mews houses built on a narrow strip of land that previously wasn’t approved by planners due to intrusion into neighbouring

properties. However, a design by London-based Autor Architects that sunk the houses into the ground by 1.5m was passed by planners; overcoming all objections. The partial submersion of the properties was designed to minimise noise whilst cleverly angled windows eliminated eye level views of the rooms by passers-by. The design was not without its challenges; the discharge of black and grey water waste being a key issue. With mains drains a storey up the architect researched potential pumping solutions and found the heavy duty Sanicubic 2 lifting station from Saniflo. With the capability of taking waste from multiple sources – and with two pumps for failsafe operation - the Sanicubics were installed into the basements

of each mew house providing the facility to accept waste from a downstairs cloakroom, kitchen with washing machine, dishwasher and basin, plus a full bathroom with shower, WC, bath and basin. The 32mm discharge pipes – cleverly concealed in the walls and basement ceiling – connect to the mains drains at street level via a larger outlet pipe. Without the Saniflo solution to pump away waste the project may not have been viable financially. The prohibitive cost of civils work to create submerged drainage would have added both a time and

cost constraint that would have prevented the build. Current residents are very happy with their new properties in the upmarket, leafy suburb of the capital and don’t even notice the pump is there. Apart from routine servicing and maintenance to keep the Sanicubics in prime working order, there is no inconvenience for homeowners who consider the pumps ‘a small price to pay for the ability to live in a prime area of London’. www.saniflo.co.uk

Stay Watertight and Warm this Winter with Wetroom and Underfloor Heating Solutions from Schlüter-Systems Ltd When it comes to long term success, possible time and cost savings and versatile design options for wetrooms, we recommend an integrated, singlesource system.

Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-TB underfloor and wall heating with unique thermal break for more efficient heating is the latest addition to the award-winning Schlüter®DITRA-HEAT-E underfloor heating range.

The beauty of the Schlüter®-WETROOM system is that its products have been designed and manufactured to complement each other and take care of installation issues, resulting in a reliable, water-tight finish which is CE marked and guaranteed to last for years to come.

The integration of a thermal break fleece on the underside of the uncoupling membrane of Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-TB pushes 80% of the heat to the surface for up to 70% faster response time on concrete compared to other electric underfloor heating systems.

A fundamental consideration is moisture management. Poor moisture management can cause leaks leading to damage in the surrounding structure and the potential for mould growth.

The Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT range is now also available with a new feature thermostat. In total there are three thermostats to choose from, with a selection between analogue and digital, yet the new ‘feature stat’ DITRA-HEATE-R3 showcases a larger 8.9cm, digital,

Heating under tile and stone coverings in a wetroom or bathroom, can be an extremely beneficial method of ensuring efficient heating, effective moisture management, preventing damp, mould and fungus by drying out any residual moisture, and providing comfort. Under wall heating is a relatively new, innovative heating solution that not only offers a great source of heat but is also a safer alternative to a towel rail or radiator; particularly for children and the elderly. Under wall heating from Schlüter-Systems is a unique solution that is very easy to install and allows radiated heating underneath the tile or stone covering, thus keeping the system protected and away from harm. The electrical heating system for under tile and stone, Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E creates comfortably warm tile and stone coverings and can be used in kitchens, wetrooms, bathrooms, en-suites and shower-rooms.

Kitchen worktop specialist Max-Top has announced the addition of a new 1.5 metre length surface to its portfolio. The new size has been launched to deliver more accuracy for installers, and help prevent product waste through cut-offs. Stephen Moss, managing director of Max-Top Quartz, said: “Our range has proved incredibly successful with its existing product length of three metres, but we have recognised that smaller workspaces and corners may not require as much worktop surface. “To combat waste and help reduce costs, the new length will be available to all retailers and suppliers from the start of June. We see this as another way of supporting installers, by directly responding to their requirements and considering their bottom line.”

Max-Top Quartz is manufactured with a patented polypropylene interior honeycomb core which provides enhanced impact resistance, lightweight ergonomics and waterproof qualities. The 1.5 metre worktop length is available in all of the 10 available decors including Warm Grey and Black Onyx Sparkle. Stephen concluded: “We are certain that both retailers and installers will welcome the new addition to our portfolio as it is set to further improve time and cost efficiency on every MaxTop installation, something that we already pride ourselves on. “We urge anybody interested in finding out more information to visit www.maxtopquartz.co.uk or call 0161 224 0333.”

Exterior: We rebuilt the 1970’s extension with a pitched roof that visually extruded the pitched roof form of the original building. This was then clad in local Lydd handmade clay tiles to compliment the original peg tiles, which then continue down and clad the walls of the side extension. Conservation style roof windows have then been positioned on the front and rear bringing direct north and south natural light into the roof space. Flush architectural glass windows from Czech Republic have been used throughout to fade into the background, placing the emphasis on the original architecture. A stunning triangular section of glass has been inserted between the original roof pitches creating breath-taking rooftop and countryside views from the master bedroom. Aligned modern doors lead into medieval like wall gardens in a straight vista. We created a huge 780sqft open-plan living, dining and kitchen space on the ground floor by removing a nonoriginal, central wall that divided the offices from the ambulance workshop/ garage. This created an amazing entertaining space within the full floor plan of the original Ambulance Station. To create division of zones within the

space we cast a large concrete plinth in the centre of the room to sit a doublesided wood burning stove and wood store. The existing I beam that runs along the ceiling above the plinth has been left exposed and the original sliding doors have been perfectly replicated to maintain an industrial feel. The carefully copied ambulance doors bifold out onto a large reclaimed timber terrace and the walled courtyard. The kitchen combines greyed timber cabinets with stunning Carrera Marble worktops and splash-backs. A brushed stainless steel island unit compliments the timber and marble while referencing the use of this material in the medical industry. We used wide engineered oak flooring on the ground and first floors that then continues to clad the walls of the double height stairwell and bedrooms in the roof space. The wet-room on the ground floor and large family bathroom upstairs have been tiled with ornate ‘lace- like’ porcelain tiles from Italy. A stainless steel nurses trolley has been used in the bathroom as a vanity unit with a large basin and mirror above.

Dartmouth Hill Mews House with our Terano in Oak in centre stage

Archetech - Page 46

Suzanne Brewer, SBA, tells us all about the Mews House and the fabulous open plan living devised around her court yard house. “Mews House was built on an old garage site, which was historically a stable mews. The long length of the L shape plan follows the footprint of the original garages and the tarmac forecourt has become a courtyard garden. As a consequence all of the ground floor rooms open onto the garden. The house is built from plank shaped Danish bricks and softened with external wooden venetian blinds and a green roof, which helps it sit comfortably within the residential conservation area. The Terano front door leads to a double height entrance hall and it was important that the front door materials complemented the adjacent teak wood kitchen doors. There were many objections when the planning application was made several years ago, but there were no objections for a complementary house on an adjacent garage site, which has been the best compliment.

GET VISUAL

In commercial and domestic developments, it’s vital to aid costing and time management and provide assurance at the decision-making stage to help inform specification. Profile 22 has invested in different tools to make specification as streamlined as possible. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is at the forefront of building and design. As an invaluable element of the planning process, BIM is fast becoming one of the most important tools in construction. With BIM it’s possible to ensure a window or door complies with building regulations or fits with the aesthetics of a scheme before commitments are made – considerations that are especially pertinent for the heritage and redevelopment markets. The Profile 22 BIM library provides 2D and 3D product representations of several window systems, including Flush Tilt-Turn and Vertical Sliding windows and fully reversible window systems. Using BIM objects can provide a level of insight previously unavailable at the pre-construction stage. Being able to visualise a window or door in place can provide multi-dimensional data. For example, it is possible to see the spatial relationships between a window and the building, and even access manufacturer’s information.

Archetech - Page 48

Profile 22 also offers RIBA NBS Plus specifications including Optima, the most advanced window and door offering for the UK’s new build and refurbishment commercial markets: t

Reynaers brings simplicity and strength to Paris’ horizontal skyscraper, the Macdonald Warehouse

T

he redevelopment of Paris’ Macdonald Warehouse has transformed an urban logistics building into a vibrant and contemporary neighbourhood, using bespoke glazing systems from Reynaers.

and XDGA, which wraps around the entire ground floor, the bridge building across the tramline as well as the exterior spaces and two blocks of assisted rental housing. Architect Milena Wysoczynska, Project Manager at Paris-based XDGA-FAA, said: “Seeking a simple yet strong solution, we developed a single pattern for both blocks, with three-dimensional panelling that reflected the sky and added depth to the façade.”

This project integrates into The Grand Urban Renewal Project; Paris’ wider efforts to provide more homes and inject life into neglected areas that are cut off by industrial facilities and infrastructural networks. An industrial barrier in itself, the ‘Macdo’ was designed in 1970 by Marcel Forest. The impressive structure spans over 600m in length, earning it the nickname ‘une tour couchée’, or ‘the horizontal skyscraper’.

Desénclavement A key concept in the renewal project is desénclavement, or ‘opening up,’ making the area less isolated and more accessible. Once considered ‘ugly and difficult,’ the Macdo was developed and built upon by fifteen French and international teams. Co-ordinator Floris Alkemade, the Netherlands’ Chief Government Architect, explained that their aims are to respect the building’s heritage and

With the residential aspect divided neatly into private and social housing, aesthetic standards ensure that no visible distinction can be made. As one of the biggest “live, work, play, shop” venues in France, the Macdonald Warehouse will offer more than 1,000 homes, expansive space for offices, shops and communal activities as well as two schools, a gymnasium and a bank across an incredible 210,000m2 of floor space. Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, a public sector financial institution, funded the €240 million development. Camille Picard, Managing Director of Paris Nord EST at the Caisse des Dépôts, said: “The scheme has a direct influence on the entire area; it enables everything that is happening in the neighbourhood. Without it, the construction of a new development zone across the street wouldn’t have started as they would struggle to sell flats and offices looking out on a warehouse.”

Pleated facades Key factors in specifying a range of Reynaers products for lots N5 and S6 of the design were performance, costs and technical evaluation. The CF 77 system combines high insulation and comfort with visual appeal. It is a highly versatile product, with a range of available opening types and threshold solutions. The folding elements with hidden gaskets create a particularly clean appearance, proving to be both efficient and aesthetically pleasing for ceilinghigh, foldable doors.

enhance it with contemporary elements. Alkemade, along with Belgian architect Xaveer de Geyter, established design guidelines to strike balance between coherence and creative freedom amongst the different plots. The result is a tidy North façade which overlooks the boulevard, juxtaposed against the more colourful and spontaneous South façade which overlooks a new train station and gardens.

LEONARD DESIGNS TO BRING GLOBAL THINKING TO GAINSBOROUGH

E

AST MIDLANDS-based Leonard Design Architects is bringing an international approach to Gainsborough with a project that will see 14 new townhouses on the River Trent in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

Archetech - Page 54

The proposed houses will be two to three story with three to four bedrooms. The townhouses are designed with an open plan living space that lead out to a terrace that overlooks the River Trent. John Morgan, director at Leonard Design Architects, said: “This is a very unique project as it is situated on a difficult brownfield site, however the constraints of the location also offer something unique as the houses will be right on the river. We wanted to make the most of these spectacular views so we raised the buildings up a level. “With this project we also wanted to create a balance of internal/

external living. We therefore used floor to ceiling glazing and windows that fold back, a feature that is unusual for the UK.” The project is part of the wider regeneration plan for Gainsborough which follows an £18 million cash injection. It has also been identified as one of 20 areas outside of London that will receive support for accelerated housing growth from the Homes and Community Agency. John added: “Our European experience being applied locally is at the forefront of all our designs and the Gainsborough project is no exception. With the current regeneration of the town underway, the proposed townhouses perfectly reflect the desire to attract more professional couples and families.” The project gained successful planning permission earlier this year.

New CPD from

Aluprof

‘Thermal Design Choices for Aluminium Fenestration Systems’ is a new RIBA approved CPD from leading commercial systems supplier, Aluprof. The CPD aims to give specifiers the knowledge they need to specify the correct systems and their thermal characteristics on a ‘per project’ basis. Aluminium systems have evolved from the solid profiles of the 60’s and 70’s through the resin ‘fill and de-bridge’ methods of the 80’s and 90’s to the sophisticated polyamide thermal breaks of today. Whilst thermal calculation can determine a particular U value, does the structure it is being fixed into retain the high performance of the product or will it cold bridge and potentially cause issues? How do you best interpret a thermal simulation graphic to choose the best product? Is solar gain, ‘friend’ or ‘foe’? These are questions the CPD will seek to answer.

Further information is available on the company website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof UK offices on 0161 941 4005.

Page 55 - Archetech

The CPD will be delivered by one of Aluprofs' experienced Specification Support Team who will be on hand to answer any questions on systems and project applications that specifiers may have. With aluminium systems now achieving Passivhaus levels of insulation it is important to understand how these systems achieve such levels of insulation and how the glazing and structure need to be designed to offer clients the most appropriate solution.

Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies to ensure each fabricated product meets the Aluprof exacting standards.

Diane-Dufresne Art Centre ACDF Architecture

With the Centre d’Art Diane Dufresne, ACDF Architecture has created a new arts centre for the suburban municipality of Repentigny, providing a dynamic core where residents can take in stirring arts and culture without getting on the highway to nearby Montreal. The centre’s architecture, including its siting, massing, circulation and materiality, are instrumental in reinventing the desired community image. It plays with notions of rootedness while gesturing to a vibrant future, instilling a sense of belonging and optimism. Familiar yet distinct, it invites

visitors in and encourages long, lingering stays. With this project, the Municipality of Repentigny and ACDF conceived of the centre as a part of a larger master plan. It is the kick-off element to transform a oncesparse, underutilized park into a cultural corridor with thematic gardens, a civic plaza and a theatre. Part of the broader redevelopment scheme is toprovide connections between previously disjointed, bungalow-lined streets. The design team

positioned the building at the nexus of new walking paths, linking a main boulevard with surrounding residential lanes, helping to draw people to the site. The building’s overall form further helps attract residents. The studio reinterpreted classical principles — a carefully proportioned colonnade in front of a calm reflecting pool, a monolithic materiality, and a solid, reassuring appearance — with its signature, contemporary sophistication. A number of the columns are off kilter to foster

moments of encounter; the materiality is a glinting stainless steel; and the inner mass is sub-divided into three sinuous, Aalto-esque volumes, each of which conceals the centre’s Multipurpose room, dance recital space and main gallery area. These spaces again balance functionality and flair. Each interior is understated to let the art shine, and was designed to optimize acoustics and lighting.

Archetech - Page 58

Beyond contemporizing the façade, the building’s materiality deftly acts as a beacon — important, as the structure is set back from the nearby roads. The row of shimmering columns gleams in the sun, their reflectivity calling to passers-by as well as amplifying and dramatizing the surroundings, such as sunlight, vegetation, and seasonal colours. The qualities of the cladding also echo those of the bell towers of the Église de la Purification-dela-Bienheureuse-Vierge-Marie, the oldest church in the Montreal region. To contrast the metal’s slickness, the three sinuous volumes in the interior are clad in locally sourced wood, which emanates warmth under an array of skylights. The classic-meets-contemporary appearance helps establish a sense of familiarity and the porous circulation allows the public to weave through layers of the building, informally experiencing the art. Visitors can

wander along through the newly landscaped forecourt, crossing a slatted wooden promenade that transverses the serenity of the reflecting pool (which doubles as a filter for storm water runoff ). They can walk through the exterior colonnade, which also functions as an open-air exterior gallery, and absorb the creativity of the place without stepping inside the building. Or they can enter the interiors, and explore the galleries of linger in the interior colonnade. Importantly, the centre contributes to the community regardless of the time of day. At night, it acts as a lantern, activating the surrounding park, and making serene reflections in the pond — reflections that express a sense of temporality, and which will instil a sense of calm for years to come. info@acdf.ca Photo credit: Adrien William

WOOD FLOOR

RENOVATION ROYAL INSTITUTE OF BRITISH ARCHITECTS

The light-flooded Royal Institute of British Architects headquarters, at 66 Portland Place, Central London was opened by King George V and Queen Mary in 1934 and represents the best of British architecture. The open design incorporates floor-to-ceiling windows, creating an oasis of light and space. RIBA Venues’ event facilities host conferences, meetings, dinners, receptions, weddings and creative events for up to 400 guests. With three roof terraces, it offers rare outside space. Today RIBA Venues plays host to a vast range of events for corporates, associations, charities and private clients. The imposing Florence Hall is the focal point of the building, and the stone floor panels inset into and contrasting with the original “Chuglum” (Indian Silverwood) wood floor sets an impressive back drop to this outstanding space. Over 80 years and many renovations the floor was looking very careworn. The German wood floor coatings company PALLMANN worked with one of their warranted Parkettprofi contractors to complete the renovation.

The house architect specified PALLMANN MAGIC OIL to protect the floor due to its natural protective properties, bringing the colour of the Chuglum back to its original, combined with high resistance to foot traffic and slip. Zero VOC means no smell and with fast, 12 hour curing, MAGIC OIL can be patched in and over-coated easily and floors can be put back into operation quickly and with minimal down time. It also comes in a variety of colours. So with the help of a specifically designed ongoing maintenance programme, the Florence Hall floor will stay protected and looking great for many more years to come.

CUSTOM-MADE NATURAL POLYX-OIL TREATMENT DURABLE YOUR STYLE

Smart Fire UK launches two new fires Heating solutions provider Smart Fire UK has launched two new innovative fires to the UK market. A new gas fire, Flam and an addition to the popular Eco Smart Fire range have been added to the collection. Smart Fire UK is the sole UK distributor for both products. Flam is an innovative gas fire, which takes away the need for multiple flues and chimneys.

The unique gas and flue design system allows up to 12 fires to operate off one flue, over 12 storeys, making them an ideal choice for new build apartments and hotels looking to create a focal point in a room. The flexibility of the system means the fires do not have to be positioned in the identical spot on each floor. Instead they can be located to suit the developer or end user with the clever system allowing for multiple configurations which a traditional system would be unable to accommodate.

Once the flue system is in place, each fire can be designed individually to compliment the interior scheme.

An inline fan controls the gas flow and the air input allowing for a safe and highly energy efficient fire. If the flue was to become obstructed, the individual fires will automatically shut down safely and will reboot once the obstruction has been remedied. Paul Holt, business manager at Smart Fire UK said: “This is the next generation of fire and heating system. “The clever configuration means a new build developer or hotel can run multiple fires over multiple floors without having the time and expense of adding extra flues and chimneys.

“It allows them to develop a focal point in a room, where previously that may not have been possible, and the decorative options means each fire can be designed specifically for the end user. “Added to that, these fires have unbeatable output making them energy and cost efficient.” The bioethanol fuelled Firebox 1100CV is the latest addition to the Eco Smart Fire range. For more on Smart Fire UK, please visit http://www.smartfireuk.com/

Page 63 - Archetech

Using the latest technology, the fires can be operated via a smart phone, tablet or remote control meaning users can control the height and width of the flame.

Users can chose different decorative touches inside the fire, with the choice of stones, pebbles, logs, firewood or black diamond, wall coverings and glass to make the fire unique to them.

Opening of the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion, MNBAQ

OMA Architecture Provencher_Roy O

n June 24 took place the inauguration of the new Pierre Lassonde pavilion of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, whose architectural conception started in 2011. It is with a tremendous sense of pride that Provencher_Roy assists to the opening of the doors to this building that imparts a newfound architectural cohesiveness to the Musée and enables Québecers and tourists alike, thanks to a 90% increase in exhibition space, to discover in greater depth the MNBAQ's impressive art collection. Integrated in an intricate and sensitive environment, the project generated an in-depth reflection about the bond between the Battlefields Park and Québec city, the preservation of the historic SaintDominique church, the creation of a persuasive presence on Grande Allée and the harmonious integration of the new pavilion. The solution was to stack the required new galleries in three volumes of decreasing size - temporary exhibitions (50m x 50m), the permanent modern and contemporary collections (45m x 35m) and design / Inuit exhibits (42.5m x 25m) - to create a cascade ascending from the park towards the city. The building aims to weave together the city, the park and the museum; it is simultaneously an extension of all three.

Page 67 - Archetech

The pavilion gradually decreases in height as it retreats from the urban turbulence, creating a cascade effect that enables the museum to reach out toward the park at the back while inviting the city in on the front. A 20-metre cantilever announces the main entrance of the Lassonde pavilion. Built using a hybrid steel truss system, it accommodates galleries completely uninterrupted by support columns. The entrance opens out onto an urban plaza that leads to a series of gateways into the galleries, courtyard and auditorium. A monumental spiral staircase of 79 stairs as well as an exterior pop-out staircase of 40 stairs provide spectacular views of the park, the city and the museum. Within the gallery boxes, mezzanines and overlooks link the temporary and permanent exhibition spaces. With its triple-glazed panels, comprised of a layer of diffuser glass, two layers of fritting and a low-emissivity coating, the building's interior is bathed in light while the façade reflects the surrounding greenery. The fritting's pattern density provides sufficient solar shading to satisfy LEED's mechanical cooling requirements. Thanks to the fritting and diffuser glass, as well as the skylights and carefully curated fenestration, a translucent effect permeates the space, transforming the cultural institution into a natural extension of Battlefields Park.

Archetech - Page 68

The new building links to the existing museum complex by a 130.6 meters long passageway. By virtue of the sheer length and change in elevation, the tunnel creates a series of linked rooms with a dramatic range of spatial and lighting conditions. Each of these serves as a distinct gallery condition, a series of spatially diverse yet visually interconnected volumes that lead the visitor, as if by chance, through the complex. The Lassonde pavilion is being launched with three days of festivities. Commissioned to endow the provincial capital with a worldclass building, the consortium of OMA and Provencher_Roy have conceived a superb work of architecture that subtly, perhaps even stealthily, and certainly successfully, strengthens the links between the disparate elements of the site. The structure creates a stunning environment for showcasing the MusĂŠe's collections, and beckons visitors to discover art, creativity and local talent, and to celebrate them. www.provencherroy.ca

Stylish and sustainable Trondheim’s new student village Europe’s largest cross laminated timber structure complete with Kebony cladding

Archetech - [Page 78]

Moholt 50|50, Trondheim’s latest student accommodation, is set to become Europe’s largest cross laminated timber structure and a welcome addition to the city. With construction now drawing to a close, this new student village is expected to reach completion in December 2016. The sleek and stylish development has a sustainable Kebony façade and will comprise five blocks housing up to 632 students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The vision for this student village is not only to provide simple and affordable housing, but also to make everyday life easier for students to allow greater focus on their studies. With a strong environmental and community focus, Moholt 50|50 is intended to be a valuable addition to the area which will benefit the local community, rather than being simply an extension of the university’s existing accommodation. This project aims to demonstrate that good architecture can create a sense of place and of belonging, irrespective of such a high turnover in tenants. The main structure of the accommodation is built using cross laminated timber, a relatively

new product which is increasingly popular within the building industry.

certifying that Kebony was the perfect choice for Moholt 50|50.

Trondheim will also benefit from large inward investment initiated by this development, with the construction of a new 1000m2 parking facility, activity and fitness centre, library, medical centre, hairdresser, supermarket and clothes shop. Moholt 50|50 will create new jobs for the local community, while developing much needed facilities, such as a kindergarten for 171 children whose parents study at the university.

Dagfinn Sagen, MDH Arkitekter commented: ‘This is an incredibly ambitious project, and once completed it will be the largest cross laminated timber (CLT) construction project in Europe. We chose Kebony for the build as it requires no treatment throughout its whole life cycle, and is the perfect choice when you need a cladding material that is maintenance free. Over time, it also naturally develops an attractive silver grey patina, an aesthetic that we believe really works for this project."

Throughout the development process there has been a significant emphasis on promoting environmental construction. As a result, MDH Arkitekter chose to use Kebony wood as the main building material for the façade, offering a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, cement and brick. Norway has a long tradition of building with wood and Kebony’s environmental attributes perfectly complement this sustainable design. The patented Kebony technology treats sustainable softwood with furfuryl alcohol, an agricultural by-product, to polymerise the cell wall which gives the final product greatly improved durability and dimensional stability. The resulting timber is a high performing, beautiful wood product. A recent study by environmental consulting firm Bergfald & Co. demonstrated that Kebony has a substantially lower carbon footprint than its tropical hardwood equivalents, between 15 and 30 times lower, inclusive of treatment and transportation to Northern Europe, thus

Mette Valen, sales manager at Kebony added: ‘The project team working on Moholt 50|50 have done an incredible job, creating a large and striking building in the midst of a built up residential area. We were really pleased to see that they placed such importance on environmental values, and we hope that the size of the build will show others that even large scale projects can place sustainability as a key focus.’ www.kebony.com

The Paddington Integrated Project (PIP)

O

ctober in New York, the London-based architects Weston Williamson were announced winners in the annual AAP American Architecture Prize. The Paddington Integrated Project (PIP) won silver in the architectural transport design category at the AAP, which honours exceptional international designs across three disciplines: architectural design, interior design, and landscape architecture. PIP is a multiple award-winning project initiated by the design work WW+P carried out on the Paddington Crossrail station. Crossrail, the delivery body of the new London Underground line (Elizabeth line) is to date, the largest, most ambitious transport infrastructure project in Europe. When designing the station at Paddington, it quickly became clear to the architects that the issues around the new station could not be resolved without considering the wider implications at the location Through discussions with key stakeholders, Weston Williamson helped develop a brief for the site as a whole. The new Crossrail station, an exemplar

of well-integrated urban architecture is also part of a wider redevelopment of Paddington. The station and PIP, will provide a major new gateway for London serving local, national and international passengers. In order to create a world-class

pedestrian space, the proposal considered design issues of heritage and conservation, provision of onward transport facilities, way-finding & orientation, and servicing & security. About this win, Chris Williamson said “Crossrail is a city-defining project which will make a huge difference to millions of Londoners every day. It is an honour to be working on Crossrail, and amongst the world’s best Engineers. Crossrail is a world-class, transformational scheme creating new

urban spaces and helping regenerate brownfield sites, such as Woolwich, to make the city work more efficiently”. The delivery of the new Crossrail station at Paddington represents a major new piece of infrastructure in this principal terminus in West London, and the opportunity to improve the quality of experience of the existing station for all passengers. Weston Williamson’s design for Paddington Crossrail Station is described by the Client as “the Jewel in the Crown of Crossrail”. About Weston Williamson+Partners Weston Williamson is an award winning architectural and urban design practice with a wide variety of projects in the UK and abroad. Our specialist knowledge and design experience, built up over 30 years, enables us to provide elegant and considered solutions. The project is located in the district of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean in Brussels. It is part of the urban renewal strategy of the city and holds a strategic position, facing the town hall, at the corner of two axis, one of them has been dedicated to enhance soft mobility. a real urban articulation opening the view towards the town hall. The facade of the building is slightly folded to broaden the perspective from the Brunfaut street, and connect the public space to the main axis without generating a „backside“. A new facade is so designed facing the prospect of the town hall. The existing road widening is thus transformed into a real space in continuity with the town square, stretching it between two landmark buildings.

Archetech - Page 86

A careful attention is given to to integration of the project into its context. The building proposed is compact, attractive, yet sober. The design of the ground floor is a search to amplify the continuities within the public space, while for the upper floors, the specificities of the program have motivated large openings cut into the main volume. They respond to the scale of the apartments, offering outdoor spaces and structuring the organization of the rooms and spaces for each of them. At the urban scale, they give the project its expressiveness.

The building is dressed with a skin made of a folded and perforated sheet of metal, interrupted only to reveal the large and bright yellow openings cut for the terraces. The sheet is folded following a variable rythm, the perforations are random. A dynamic effect, a vibration of the facade is so realised in order to accompany the urban articulation and underline the role of the project as urban signal.

revolutionary range of premium granite flagstones, TerraPave® is the latest in product ingenuity from AG, engineered in an unrivalled range of colours, finishes and depths to allow architects’ creativity to be realised. AG, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of hard landscaping, building products and structural precast, has, for more than 50 years, led the way in providing practical yet aesthetically superior alternatives to natural stone imports. TerraPave® perfectly captures the aesthetic of natural granite, but doesn’t come with the cost and supply issues architects often come across when specifying granite in projects – namely cost, supply and poor product function such as slip resistance. The ‘must-have’ product for urban development, TerraPave® is unique in its range of colour blends. Offering more than three times that of any other supplier in the market, its ten colour blends have been carefully developed using shades from natural granite aggregates and come in two different finishes – textured and ground. The high quality of the ground finish option also makes it suitable for indoor use.

AG ensures landscape designers enjoy maximum flexibility for laying patterns by making the product available in three sizes – 400x400mm, 500x500mm and 600x400mm – all of which can be specified in standard depths of 40mm, 50mm, 65mm and 80mm in all colours, finishes and formats. This gives designers a huge choice when specifying for differing mechanical requirements and trafficking applications. Unusually for granite flagstones, TerraPave® can withstand the occasional heavy-vehicle traffic – a string to its bow no other product in the market currently can offer. With TerraPave®, the negatives associated with reconstituted stone needn’t be considered. Never before has such a range of colour, depth and finish combinations been available to landscaping designers – 360 combinations in fact! AG has a history of innovation. From humble beginnings in 1960, it has evolved into a company that works in genuine partnership with architects, designers and contractors, developing and supplying products that perform better and help deliver projects on vision.

For more information please go to www.ag.uk.com

Page 87 - Archetech

Having always invested heavily in the latest production machinery, AG combines this with a vast knowledge of geology, chemistry and process technology to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Its ongoing development of new and better ways of making hard landscaping products puts much of its range into the category of ‘often imitated but never bettered’.

Elite Outdoor Living Create Spectacular Spa Decking Area Overlooking the Beautiful Worcestershire Countryside

Archetech - Page 88

One of our recent clients required a complete decking and balustrade system to integrate with two spa pools, a large seating area, and a large expanse of lawn. They owned an existing traditional timber deck and balustrade but this had become tired and dated over the years despite regular maintenance and treatment. One of the main drivers for our client’s renovation was the amount of space they had available to extend their outdoor living areas and the potential to spend more time entertaining family and friends. At Consultation, our experts advised that two QWICKBUILD frames would make for much easier installation over timber piles given the complexity of the project at hand. QWICKBUILD is an extremely versatile sub-frame system which spans five metres without supports and offers 100 per

cent moisture resistance for vastly superior durability and dimensional stability. They also recommended RESORTDECK as the perfect decking solution for the most natural aesthetics, greatest durability, and because of the incorporated spa pool areas, the greatest slip resistance. Furthermore, we were able to save costs for our client by modifying part of the existing timber frame and strengthening it by adjusting the joist centres to the best positions. Therefore, this part of sub-frame could still be used for the new RESORTDECK and frameless glass balustrade installation. Our frameless minipost balustrade system was chosen as the most economical solution for ensuring unobstructed views which was high on the design’s priorities. Installation involved dismantling of the existing wooden balustrade and deck and manufacturing our

QWICKBUILD aluminium frame as made-to-measure sections prior to being on site, saving time and money on installation for the client. This along with the unmatched dimensional stability and durability over the coming years has made QWICKBUILD a real winner for our client. The first decking system to eliminate screws for fastening the boards to the frame, when used with RESORTDECK, QWICKBUILD has proven popular with architects, specifiers, and home DIY enthusiasts alike. At Gratnells, we’re a manufacturing organisation which provides a vital element in the landscape and environment of education. We’re part of a movement that understands how crucial the physical place of learning is to a child’s well-being, safety, sense of belonging and development. What’s more, this applies to all children, irrespective of their skills and talents. What we do must take account of the immense diversity that is in our schools and colleges. Together with a whole range of partners and collaborators we’ve co-developed new ideas in the application of digital technologies, in the performing arts, in outdoor learning, in all the places where teachers teach and children learn.

Gratnells Learning Rooms – embracing the full spectrum of the school environment The interdependence of school architecture with teaching methods, the role of digital media and the smart use of available space, not merely to facilitate the learning process but to stimulate it, are now part of the education landscape. In the classroom, outdoors, in communal areas and in spaces where flexibility of use is paramount, there is a balance to be achieved between inspiration and good order. With its ‘Learning Rooms’ philosophy, Gratnells offers architects and planners both an innovative approach to the best use of space and a practical set of solutions to store, display, archive, present and protect teaching and learning materials. In Science subjects, for example, teachers cannot work without a good prep room. Separate zones may be needed to cope with the range of activities involved, including handling of dangerous chemicals and volatile materials. At the very simplest level, with some 30 basic colours of storage trays and the ability to produce to any recognised Pantone reference, Gratnells offers high visibility colour coding options to identify and locate hazardous materials. As more sophisticated requirements become apparent, the company can offer software-based planning tools to facilitate design and layout of prep rooms and laboratories including the application of integral frames, trolleys, trays and inserts

to create good order for learners and a lesson-ready infrastructure for teachers. As a report from the Association for Science Education made clear “Communication between architects, designers and manufacturers on the one hand and science teachers on the other is essential for developing science provision for the highest standards of teaching and learning.” With the ubiquitous availability of digital technology in schools, accelerated by the launch of the iPad in 2010, new challenges have arisen for the safe storage and ready availability of devices. There now exists a permanent requirement to manage, control, safeguard and identify the learning media.

which merge seamlessly into the storage system, whilst offering an efficient charging regimen ensuring that devices are always work-ready. A 2015 report entitled ‘Innovative Schools: Teaching and Learning in the Digital Age’ from the Directorate-General for Internal Policies of the European Parliament contained this statement “The digital revolution is… transforming the way children play, access information, communicate and learn. We need to take care of our future by designing innovative and engaging learning environments”.

Smart design from Gratnells has produced a series of charging trays and trolleys

Gratnells Learning Rooms offers a mix of ideas, advice and content for the education sector which seeks to be both practical and visionary, working in common cause with designers and architects to create a better environment – and better outcomes for learners and teachers alike.

Construction group SDC saves space, time and money with new SMART OKI Multifunction Printers Customer Background

SDC is a construction company group that works across a variety of sectors including research and development, commercial, manufacturing, automotive, healthcare and education. As a result, it often has around 20 to 30 concurrent live projects on the go – each with their own temporary site manager’s office.

The Challenge

Building sites can be a tough environment for any printer. It needs to be able to cope with anything, from dust and mud clogging up its insides to rough-handling by a constant stream of users and being moved from site to site. The main challenge is space. SDC had a selection of devices in each of its site offices including A4 mono and A3 colour printers for the many drawings needed for each project, day-to-day office printing and a separate photocopier, all causing space restrictions in an already limited workplace.

Why OKI?

The decision was made to standardise all devices so that they originate from a single vendor. Some of SDC’s existing units were OKI printers which had proved robust and reliable, so OKI seemed the obvious choice. The OKI Smart Multifunction Printer (MFP)

passed the test with flying colours and an order for several new Smart MC853dnct MFP’s followed.

Customer Quote

“The reason for going for that specific device was to have all the functionality in one place – it can print, scan, fax and photocopy. It is very compact so it just sits in the corner and doesn’t take up any desk space,” says Kit Lock, IT technician at SDC. “We also wanted a machine that could replicate the finer details on drawings but – at the other end of the spectrum – quickly print out a big Wet Paint sign. We need these quickly because we are working with the public much of the time. They have to be good quality so people can read them,”

“We have been impressed by the quality, speed and overall performance of the OKI smart printers.”

Find out more about OKI Smart Multifunction Printers at www.oki.co.uk/mc800series

Conclusion

“We are expecting to make savings through standardised consumables and a reduction in number of devices” says Lock. “It has made life in the IT department a lot easier as we are not installing machines right, left and centre. All the devices are set up the same, staff can go to any site and print straightaway. Also there’s no scanning software involved because it’s all done through the machine.” OKI MC853dn Multifunction Printer

Warmshell Breathable Wall Insulation System Bringing a 17th century farmhouse to modern standards of energy efficiency and comfort

Archetech - Page 100

Houlston Manor is an unlisted mainly 17th century box-framed farmhouse, which has been substantially added to and altered over the years. In the early 19th century, the house was also ‘gentrified’ according to the fashion of the day when the timberframed front wall was replaced with brick to create a unified exterior. Owned by the same family for generations, the current owner was born in the house and has lived there ever since. While the basic structure of the house – including the roof - was in good condition, the windows were in a state of disrepair. In addition, the southern gable end had been letting in wind-driven rain through failed pointing and, despite having central

heating (installed in the 1990s) and insulated attic spaces, the house was not a warm one. The owner’s aims were threefold: to replace the rotten and draughty windows with new; to insulate the walls, and; to improve the appearance of the house by re-introducing the 19th Century symmetry. After choosing timber casement windows to replace the rotten sashes, a number of wall insulation solutions were considered. The owner decided that external insulation would help resolve the aesthetics issue and deal with both the threat of failing pointing and general poor weather-

proofing. Houlston Manor is solid-walled and without a damp-proof course and the risk of moisture condensation within the walls was considered to be of paramount importance. The use of breathable materials, which would allow vapour transfer through the insulating layer, was essential and the Lime Green Warmshell system, which uses wood fibre board as the insulation layer and lime render as a weather-proofer, was judged to fit the bill. The sustainable Warmshell insulation system is flexible ad perfect for bringing an old traditionally constructed building up to modern energy efficiency standards.

To install the Warmshell system at Houlston Manor, wood-fibre insulation boards were fixed directly to the external brickwork after excavating down around the sides of the house at ground level – a precaution taken as the house had different floor levels internally.

Houlston Manor is now secure, warm and weather-proof for decades to come. In the first three months following the installation of Warmshell (in winter 2015),

This represents an incredible 59% reduction in energy costs! As the original brick walls dry out and warm up over time, the owners expect to see even greater energy cost savings. Houlston Manor is now ‘fit for purpose’ for the 21st century and beyond, a warm, cosy and energy efficient family home that will last for many more generations to come. For further information on Warmshell insulation systems please visit www.warmshellinsulation.co.uk or call Lime Green Products on 01952 728611

Page 101 - Archetech

The insulation boards were then covered by two coats of lime render – a basecoat (with reinforcing fibreglass mesh) and decorative finishing coat. The eaves were also extended to ensure that the roof had significant overhang over the insulation and renders.

the property used 2800kWh for heating, compared to 6821 kWh in the exact same period the previous year.

THE DURABLE CLADDING SOLUTION FROM LATHAMS Accoya®LathamCLAD - the modified, highly durable and dimensionally stable certified timber cladding – is available from all eight of James Latham’s timber depots. Created from sustainably sourced wood and completely non-toxic, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a revolution in wood technology. And with the 15mm profile having recently received TRADA approval for use as an external cladding product, Accoya®LathamCLAD is a perfect solution for exterior cladding, siding and façades where the wider board offers numerous features and benefits including enhanced aesthetics, less frequent maintenance, dimensional stability, durability and improved insulation values.

ACCOYA® and the Trimarque Device are registered trademarks owned by Titan Wood Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Accsys Technologies PLC, and may not be used or reproduced without written permission.

Suitable for horizontal or vertical installation, Accoya®LathamCLAD can be used to create simple or complex designs. And with a choice of factory coating finishes, it can be opaque coated or, for those wishing to enjoy the natural look of wood, translucent coated. Plus, with a 50-year guarantee when used externally, Accoya®LathamCLAD’s low maintenance requirements add to its ‘whole life’ cost effectiveness and environmental credentials and this versatility makes it ideal for use in residential, commercial and industrial applications. Paul Leach, James Latham’s Group Product Sales & Development Manager for Accoya said, “When it comes to cladding, Accoya®LathamCLAD ticks all the boxes and is the perfect solution for many exterior applications which were once only feasible with non-sustainable material. Use of the wider cladding boards is allowed by the improved dimensional stability, plus cladding joints do not open, tolerances remain tight and twist is prevented. In addition, the wood’s natural appearance is retained for longer, thanks to the superior resistance to the effects of UV exposure.” He added, “Accoya®LathamCLAD is a fantastic material for external specification and fits perfectly with our already established range of sustainable products.” In addition to cladding, sidings and facades, Accoya® wood is also ideal for windows, doors and decking.

Showcase of Excellence in Green Building at the Reford Gardens During the tourist season, from June to September, visitors to the Reford Gardens have access to a program that is centred on the theme “To build is to choose, illustrating the benefits of green building. From October to May, the ERE 132 Eco Home is available for rent for short stays, business meetings or creative residencies for artists. The house is suitable for disabled guests and can accommodate up to six people in three bedrooms. Principles of Green Building Many factors influence the cost of a home’s construction or renovation: square footage, materials, insulation levels, mechanical systems, landscaping,

etc. Beyond the cost of materials, take into account the recurring costs - energy and maintenance - before making your choices. Here are a few that have been made by the architects: Absence of a basement: The basement is a space that has a very high environmental impact because it significantly increases the amount of cement necessary for construction. A ton of Portland cement produces nearly a ton of greenhouse gases (GHG). A basement can also present many risks and inconveniences: humidity, flooding, mold, lack of light.

Opt for a home built on a slab-on-grade instead of a conventional basement foundation because basements in Quebec homes often pose problems. Basements cost as much to build as an additional floor and can lead to humidity problems (and can even lead to serious complications because of water leakage). Basements also require a lot of concrete, a large emitter of greenhouse gases. To compensate for the lack of space, an additional floor can be built: a solution that is more energy-efficient, presents fewer environmental hazards, is more comfortable and has a higher resale value. Surface area of a home: It is important to assess the real needs for space to make economies on the costs of construction and maintenance. It is important to note that a home that is well designed can be small in surface area, but can provide a spacious living area! In Canada, the average size of a new home is 2,450 ft2 (228 m2). ERE 132 has 1,867 ft2 (173 m2) of heated area.

Structural elements: The best options to consider are solid wood, prefabricated factory panels, double-stud walls, concrete molding and straw-bale walls. They are among the most environmental and economical. ERE 132: additional cost of $12,000 for the double-stud wall. Hyper-insulation of the home: A solution that allows you to save plenty of money on heating costs in the long term. It is important to choose insulation materials that are both healthy and affordable, such as cellulose, wood fiber, straw or hemp, in sufficient quantity. ERE 132: additional cost of $11,600 for the hyper-insulation of the home (attic space, walls and slab-ongrade).

Archetech - Page 106

High-quality, durable and environmentally-friendly surfaces: Interior and exterior walls in wood, a roof with cedar shingles and wood and concrete floors are among the best choices. The home will not have to be renovated in a long time. This is a source of significant savings and is environmentally friendly. Openings, doors and windows: It is important to focus on the location of the doors and windows and on their quality and efficiency! South facing doors and windows allow to maximize the heat input. Choosing an ENERGY STARÂŽ rating: their quality and efficiency are certified. www.refordgardens.com

The new light cancellation technology of the FFE Fireray range of infra-red beam smoke detectors greatly reduces false alarms caused by ambient light. This allows reliable operation, even in difficult light conditions caused by direct sunlight, sodium lamps and florescent lighting.

The Fireray range is the only line of beam smoke detectors to offer Light Cancellation Technology for increased reliability. To request more information about the Fireray, or discuss possible beam smoke detection applications, contact us at sales@ffeuk.com or visit the our website, www.ffeuk.com.

Page 107 - Archetech

Fireray - The only Beam Smoke Detector available today that can be installed in direct sunlight!

Fireray detectors identify smoke over much larger areas than traditional fire detectors and are ideally suited for warehouses, sports arenas and aircraft hangers. Usually wall-mounted at near-ceiling level, the detectors work by transmiing a beam of invisible infra-red light across the building space that is to be protected. A receiver detects and measures the light and can recognise smoke interference anywhere along the beam path, triggering the alarm when the predetermined threshold is reached. With this new technology, the detector can now actively monitor ambient light levels and subtract them from the real signal to avoid false alarms caused by lighting conditions.

Creating Beautiful Perimeter Hoarding Using the hoarding on the perimeter of your project to advertise, enhance and inform is nothing new. However, with the latest technology and extra-wide printing presses, the cost to clad your existing hoarding with high quality graphics, has been reduced quite considerably.

Archetech - Page 108

When Spiral invested in their latest flatbed press, they had printed hoarding in mind. The sheer size of the print bed, and production speed, means they have expanded capacity, increased production speed and reduced the cost to the enduser. However, it’s not just the cost of the hoarding, it’s how it looks… Spiral Colour Print have a unique approach to hoarding graphic production, from print finishing to installation. Their workforce is a blend of print finishers-cum-fitters, which means they have a cohesive workflow from production to installation. They also produce detailed Adobe InDesign diagrams in scale so that designers can see their designs take shape in reality, rather than a perfectly flat and false design canvas. Pre-press manager David Davies and Production Manager Jason Carpenter, work with designers to ensure their work is successfully reproduced in the high resolution print process, and discuss requirements with designers before production takes place.

Designers are encouraged to develop their ideas, with a number of different ways of presenting hoarding graphics now being implemented. Gold and silver metallic vinyls, viewing apertures incorporated into designs as well as 3D block lettering being used in recent projects. Spiral Colour also produce and install bespoke wall coverings, wallpapers together with unique vinyl graphics to complete the branding project internally. Both old and new buildings have seen the Spiral installation team create some excellent wall-art on their walls over the last eight years, and there’s more to come. Their commitment to work with designers to fulfil a complete branding solution is evident in their growth over the last ten years.

A free site survey is offered which allows Spiral to offer experience and expertise, and work with all to create superb looking graphics within budget. Call us on 01625 435130 Email: sales@spiralcolour.com

The Calyx is a minimalist-style tub, made distinctive by its clean lines and low, integrated seat. The Nirvana is an armchair-style soaking tub, complete with internal armrests and footrests. The Xanadu is a two-person soaking tub. The Yasahiro is the latest generation soaking tub, featuring a carefully sculpted back and increased legroom. All models are supremely comfortable. They are handmade in Britain and compatible with Cabuchon’s bespoke hydrotherapy systems.
