The renovation of an old piano factory in London has been given a cutting-edge look thanks to Yorkshire’s leading laser cutting and engraving company, Cutting Technologies. The factory in Camden has been converted into 15 residential apartments with the whole interior of the building being remodelled and the exterior repaired. Having been commissioned by Ambigram Architects, Cutting Technologies laser cut several balustrades which transform the building’s main communal staircase.
Using advanced digital design techniques, a gradient pattern of perforations across the balustrades was created – following the saw-tooth profile of the floating tread of the staircase without ever touching them. www.cut-tec.co.uk

Cavity Barriers protect against fire spread
A great many character or period properties have stone balustrade incorporated into their design. These balustrades make a large visual impact, but they also have a practical purpose as barriers and screens.
A common cause for the demise of a balustrade is the presence of water. Many original balustrades were made from artificial stonework such as Roman Cement, Concrete and Stucco. These were often reinforced with iron or mild steel bars which rust and expand when exposed to water over a long period. Other balustrades were made of natural stone such as Portland Stone or Bath Stone. While these types of balustrade do not suffer from ‘blown’ reinforcing, they do have a finite life span and the surface of stonework will often delaminate or form powdery patches.

Cadplan had also worked with the architect for the residential Grosvenor Estate development on Grosvenor Crescent for the now completed Belgravia Gate. The whole site with original buildings was scanned in 3D to provide a point cloud from which a BIM compliant, 3D model was produced. The scanning and completed documentation was delivered to the architect in just 4 weeks. In Holland, Cadplan’s team travelled to the Passage Shopping Centre in The Hague to assist in a retail store transformation project. The project needed 2 visits to 3D laser scan the book store and surrounding areas in colour. The required floor plans and sections of the building were completed in just 3 weeks.

BioClad certifies hygiene at new multimillion pound schools project BioClad is installing its PVC hygienic wall cladding at new-build schools in Aberdeen as part of a huge project by Aberdeenshire Council. Markethill is a £12m new primary school in Turriff, Aberdeen. The newbuild facility, by Morrison Construction, will replace the original school to help expand the capacity and avoid overcrowding to enhance the education for pupils. Markethill Primary School will feature 18 classrooms, a library, a gym with courts and changing rooms, a dining hall and additional needs facilities. BioClad’s PVC hygienic wall cladding will be installed in changing rooms, corridors and kitchens. Following the construction of Markethill, will be the build of Uryside school in Inverurie to serve the hundreds of new homes currently being built in the area. Uryside Primary School will provide accommodation for approximately 540 pupils and will feature a nursery, library, offices, three additional support needs rooms, an outdoor teaching area, floodlit multi-use games pitch, playing fields and running track on the 13 acre site. Yeoman Shield Help to Maintain Standards at Oldham School. The new building of North Chadderton School, Oldham was built in 2013 providing facilities for up to 1500no. students aged between 11 & 18 years. Built without the provision of wall protection to the school’s interior walls, Facilities Manager William Wheatcroft soon noticed that the plastered, white walls, were suffering marking and superficial damage detrimental to maintaining the school’s high standards. “We needed a permanent solution to our problem of continually re-decorating and cleaning the walls along corridors and congregational areas of the school – which was proving to be a drain on the maintenance budgets.” Explained Mr Wheatcroft.

“There has definitely been a marked difference in the time spent re decorating and sorting out wall damage which I am sure is resulting in a year on year saving in our maintenance budgets. Our cleaning team have also commented that the wall protection panels are certainly easier to wipe down than the painted wall finish.

Rinnai Takes On Man Vs Machine Challenge Rinnai, manufacturer of the market leading Infinity hot water heating units, has started a challenge that puts its product against tough opposition in the form of super league rugby team Widnes Vikings. Every lighting application calls for different priorities. Sometimes it’s about the total light output, measured in lumens (lm). Sometimes it’s about colour rendering, measured in CRI. Sometimes it’s about energy efficiency, measured in lumens per watt.

Protecting Welsh National Heritage At St Fagans

Stuart Hicks from liquid waterproofing membranes specialist, Kemper System, discusses the roofing project at the ‘Gweithdy’, the latest addition to St Fagans National History Museum, Wales’s most popular heritage attraction. Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, is made up of seven museums across the country. Named after the village near Cardiff where it is located and set in the grounds of an Elizabethan castle, St Fagans National History Museum is one of these sites and was established in 1948 to chronicle Welsh lifestyle, culture and architecture. The open-air museum now attracts almost 600,000 visitors each year to its picturesque 100-acre site, offering them the unique opportunity to wander around more than 50 historic structures from various periods of Welsh history that have been moved from all over the country and re-erected at the Museum; these include cottages, mills, shops, places of worship and workshops. With a £25 million makeover now
underway, thanks to the largest ever grant awarded in Wales by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) £11.5 million and funding from the Welsh Government. The scheme comprises completely refurbishing the Museum’s main building with new galleries, learning spaces and visitor facilities, reconstructing two significant, lost buildings from archaeological evidence, the ‘Gweithdy’ (Welsh for workshop), a gallery and activity space that celebrates the craft of the maker. It is a multi-purpose sustainable building and will encourage visitors to experience traditional skills first-hand. Designed by FCB studios and constructed by principal contractor, Kier, the ‘Gweithdy’ is a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building located
in a woodland setting within the museum’s existing grounds. Its design and specification reflect its natural location, in terms of both sustainability and aesthetics. The building envelope for the steel framed structure combines curtain walling and stainless-steel cladding to act as a mirror that reflects the landscape onto the façade. Meanwhile, grey panels and wooden slats installed as vertical features to echo the tree trunks all around the building complement nature’s palette. Changing Spec The ‘Gweithdy’ has been constructed with a steel deck roof supported by steel beams and glulam beams that will also form a feature within the internal gallery/workshop area. The roof has been designed with a slight pitch to aid drainage and features a number of upstands, outlets and gutter flows. The architect’s original specification for the roof called for a single ply membrane
but the roofing and cladding contractor appointed to the scheme, M.H. Massey, proposed that this should be changed to Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 wet-onwet liquid membrane. As M.H. Massey’s project manager, Dave Sampson, explained: “A flat roof of this size in a woodland site and a location known for its wet climate is potentially vulnerable to leaks if a seamed system is used because even a 1mm gap in the weld could result in water ingress. “Our advice was to opt for a seamless membrane that adheres directly to the substrate to form a flexible monolithic membrane and our experience of Kemper System’s membranes led us to suggest Kemperol V210.” M. H. Massey proposed the change to Kier and set about convincing the design team at FCB Studios that revising the roofing specification would benefit the project. Samples of cured Kemperol V210 were made up to demonstrate the flexible seam-free membrane and the discussions resulted in the change of specification being agreed as part of a warm roof build up. Warm Roof Build Up M.H. Massey laid the steel decks to form the roof before beginning installation of the Stratex warm roof system comprising: Kempertec Type 1 primer, Kempershield vapour control layer (VCL), 150mm Kempertherm FR hard top insulation,
and Kemperol V210 liquid waterproofing system. Kempertherm FR insulation board has a 3mm reinforced facing that can be used on areas subject to greater point loading or more frequent traffic. This offers a cost-effective solution for more frequently trafficked areas and avoids the labour and material costs of a traditionally used plywood strengthening layer. Working in sections, the insulation was laid directly onto the vapour barrier, with the joins between sections sealed using Kempertherm joint fleece, before application of a primer and then the reinforced Kemperol V210 resin to complete the 900m2 2-part roof one area at a time.
Sustainability Secured The completed roof and the rooftop plant will be hidden from view at ground level thanks to sections of stainless steel panelling that have been installed around the roof perimeter. Kemperol V210’s BBA-accredited service life of 25 years means that the museum’s estates team can be confident of a low maintenance roof installation, while the warm roof build up will aid thermal performance in line with Part L building regulations, the new facility’s BREEAM rating and Amgueddfa Cymru’s sustainability commitment. enquiries@kempersystem.co.uk www.kempersystem.co.uk
Although some of the contractor’s team had wide ranging experience of using the Kemperol system, others had previously only been used to laying single ply membranes, so Kemper System provided installation training at the company’s purpose-specified training facility in Warrington. Technical representatives from Kemper System also visited the site during the programme to advise and support the installation team. On completion of the roof areas a man safe system was installed and the fixing points subsequently waterproofed using Kemperol V210 to maintain the seamless membrane.

While the design opportunities presented by parametric 3D façades have long been seen as excitingly radical, the high cost of the one-off special solutions required to realise them has prevented their breaking out into the architectural mainstream. New barrier design leads to new orders A short while ago we were contacted by an existing client, a major steel manufacturer who commissioned us to design an innovative road barrier. Innovation was required as the barrier was to be installed in a location where there were height restrictions and the dimensions of the area meant a conventional barrier was unsuitable. Our client requested a cranked arm barrier which folded to the side to maximise head room in a confined space. Added to this, the barrier had to be fitted under a crane gantry. The challenge was to design a barrier folding, as pictured to the left. Due to the high volume of traffic using this plant, it was decided to base the design on our established medium duty 660 barrier pictured above right. Our design engineers tackled the challenge with their usual dedication, resulting in a cost effective cranked arm design which included a modified program for the controller. The concept was agreed with the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s project team and we duly manufactured a bespoke solution to the satisfaction of our client, whilst keeping within time and budget constraints. Such has been the success of this project that it has resulted in a repeat order for the same site and, through word of mouth, has led to a further order from another client for supply and install as part of the Cross Rail project.
