The new residential quarter right in the middle of downtown Bielefeldrecognizes the potential of history, conveying this potential into the present. The large-scale industrial architecture of the area of the former incorporation “Anker Werke AG“, a company specialized in the production of sewing ma- chines and cash registers, has been kept up, with this area having been transformed into a new urban quarter by means of some minor changes.

Archetech - Page 6

Additional incisions made at the corners of the perimeter block development break up the existing structures, thus creating an interior zone filled with light and loaded with new contents. At the same time, the staggered positioning of the entrances leaves the sense of comfort of the garden unaffected and sustains the original character of the industrial scale.

This approach has resulted in the creation of a revegetated interior space which – by means of its design – serves both as a community garden and as an area allowing barrier-free surmounting of the rising terrain. Apart from the use for commercial purposes in the southern part of the ground floor, the ensemble of buildings first and foremost provides space for 102 apartments that are full of personality. The struc- tural design of the previous factory buildings has been maintained throughout, and the heritage-pro- tected front of the main building, alongside with the bridge, has been restored in a careful manner. This has led to the creation of spacious living areas flooded with light, and thanks to their high ceil- ings and their picture windows, these areas have a loft-like character of extraordinary kind.

Page 7 - Archetech

Archetech - Page 8

The pro- jecting penthouse apartments, which are built onto the existing structure, constitute a quite particular highlight. With their bronzecolored metal cladding systems and the deliberate cantilevers positioned at the incisions, they clearly reflect and underline the conceptual idea of an inner-city ensemble that carries on the history of Bielefeld, making this history lively and perceptible.

Using Human Centric Lighting TO imPROve HeaLTH LigHT iS aS imPORTanT TO HeaLTH aS a baLanceD DieT OR ReguLaR exeRciSe. iT HaS a Huge imPacT On OuR PeRfORmance, SLeeP anD emOTiOnS. Over 4 million years of evolution, the cycle of day and night has shaped human beings. The 24-hour recurring pattern of light and dark stimulates our body’s processes, when we sleep and when we wake. This daily cycle, known as our ‘circadian rhythm’, is driven by natural light which triggers hormonal changes within the body. Studies have shown that blue-white light found in morning sunlight suppresses our sleep hormone, melatonin, and causes the production of the stimulating hormone serotonin. Warm-red light found in evening sunlight increases melatonin production which makes us feel tired and encourages sleep. Indoor lIvIng Since we now spend 90% of our time indoors, we don’t receive enough exposure to natural light to stabilise our circadian rhythm. The artificial lights found in many buildings contain high levels of blue light which stimulates activity. Exposure to this all day affects our hormone production and disrupts our circadian rhythm.

Archetech - Page 12

To see this effect in action, use your phone just before bed. It makes you feel awake. For this reason, most phone’s now have a ‘Night Shift’ mode which adjusts the colour temperature of your screen. Instead of crisp blue-white light, the screen has a more warm-red tint that’s less stimulating during the hours when your body should be preparing for sleep.

The buildings we live and work in can have a huge effect on our health and wellbeing. We spend most of our days at work so our offices have a proportionately high impact on how we feel, act and sleep. Initiatives such as the WELL Building Standard® have therefore recently been introduced to measure the performance of buildings against some crucial factors that affect human health. WELL specifically measures seven factors; air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind. After the basic human requirements, light is emphasised as the most important influencer. This growing awareness of the impact of natural light has driven the concept of human centric lighting and a need to ensure people receive exposure to daylight despite spending less and less time outside. BIologIcally effectIve lIght Human centric lighting ensures that the right type of light is available in a space at the right time. Natural daylight is the ideal source of light and should be incorporated into the

built environment as much as possible. When artificial light is unavoidable, using biologically effective light which can replicate the changes in sunlight throughout the day supports a healthy environment. Modern LED lights can almost completely represent the colour spectrum of sunlight, replicating red and blue light at a Kelvin range of between 2,700 and 6,500. The award-winning Sleep Research and Clinical Chronobiology research group explored the effect of such light on humans in collaboration with psychiatrist Dr Dieter Kunz. The clinical study conducted in Berlin used LUCTRA® luminaries to prove the biological effect of light on humans. LUCTRA® provides a wide Kelvin range and generates illuminance of up to 1000 lux through four highperformance CREE LEDs, enabling the researchers to test the impact of different types of light. Given the human reaction to light demonstrated by the study, biologically effective lights can be used as part of a human centric lighting scheme to replicate the effects of natural daylight. Yet despite these positive findings there has been no revolution in the workplace to change existing lighting schemes. “Most of the lighting currently available is detrimental to health” argues Dr Kunz. Clearly more can be done to use these findings in the design of the built environment and support buildings to achieve WELL certification. IndIvIdualIsIng lIght We are all unique. We work different hours and carry out different tasks. Where large numbers of people are found in close proximity, localised lighting gives each individual the ability to adjust their light exposure according to their own personal needs. “The control of modern lighting systems is being discussed intensively”, explains Ulrich Kuipers, Professor of Electrical

lIghtIng for the future Disturbances to our circadian rhythm can have serious consequences on our well-being and performance in the short term and our overall health in the long term. Human centric lighting is the key factor that stimulates and stabilises our inner rhythm. It can combat insomnia, irritability and a lack of concentration and promote alertness, higher activity levels and restful sleep at night.

workspace is illuminated to their required level.

Putting humans at the heart of design will give us spaces that put people and their individual needs first. There is a growing awareness of the important contribution of light to healthy living, so we will see more spaces that are lit by natural daylight or biologically effective lighting. These are spaces that will support the levels outlined in the WELL Building Standard®. Spaces that will cater for our basic individual needs.

Kuipers is responsible for the technical development of the

One such solution is the use of task lighting alongside natural daylight and overhead lighting to ensure that an individual’s

Our vision for the community is becoming a reality, and we look forward to continued growth this year. Six of the country’s leading architects were commissioned to design one-of-a- kind homes to showcase to prospective buyers the unique sites available at ASCAYA.

Page 19 - Archetech

Ascaya, the exclusive residential development set in the foothills of the McCullough Range outside of Las Vegas, is celebrating the completion of its first inspiration home. The 7,200-square-foot luxury estate, designed by SB Architects, includes four bedrooms, six and a half baths, an office and entertainment room. Based in San Francisco with offices in Miami and Shenzhen, the firm is globally known for site-sensitive designs and creating thought-provoking and well-crafted architectural projects.

In an exercise of collective creativity, each home introduces a different interpretation of contemporary design.

Archetech - Page 20

Four additional inspiration homes are currently under construction, with the final home scheduled to start construction later this year. ASCAYA beckons with mesmerizing and well-appointed custom homes designed to fit seamlessly into the landscape. A tranquil refuge from Las Vegas’ energetic pace, SB Architects’ design sits on a half-acre site with sweeping views of the city and the surrounding mountain ranges. It will be offered on the market for $7.295 million and is currently available for private showings.

Page 21 - Archetech

We are honored to be one of the chosen architects to develop on this beautiful land,” said Matt Page, LEED AP, Vice President at SB Architects. “Drawing from our extensive hospitality experience, we approached this project as a smaller-scale resort. We see a lot of crossover with private estates wanting more resort amenities, and hotels yearning to feel more residential and intimate. We brought the resort lifestyle experience to the ASCAYA residence - incorporating an open layout with substantial gathering places, fluid connectivity from indoor-outdoor spaces, and amenities that overlook the Las Vegas Strip. With pockets of flexible spaces, future homeowners can create different setting and experiences. The home is equally comfortable as a private retreat for two or an ideal setting for a lively gathering around the stunning pool.”

A statement of subtle elegance, the simple massing and long, horizontal lines are tempered by rich, natural textures and earthy colors. The contemporary home offers expansive living, dining and kitchen areas. And through a series of clerestory windows, the roof seems to float, semi-disconnected from the structure. The home also features a covered outdoor dining room, a sunken fire pit, outdoor spa, an indoor multi-functional room with a highly coveted roof deck. One of the remarkable aspects of this home is how seamless the transition is from indoor to outdoor space. With clean lines and expanses of glass, our home embraces the surrounding desert landscape.

Warmshell Breathable Wall Insulation System Bringing a 17th century farmhouse to modern standards of energy efficiency and comfort

Archetech - Page 24

Houlston Manor is an unlisted mainly 17th century box-framed farmhouse, which has been substantially added to and altered over the years. In the early 19th century, the house was also ‘gentrified’ according to the fashion of the day when the timberframed front wall was replaced with brick to create a unified exterior. Owned by the same family for generations, the current owner was born in the house and has lived there ever since. While the basic structure of the house – including the roof - was in good condition, the windows were in a state of disrepair. In addition, the southern gable end had been letting in wind-driven rain through failed pointing and, despite having central

heating (installed in the 1990s) and insulated attic spaces, the house was not a warm one. The owner’s aims were threefold: to replace the rotten and draughty windows with new; to insulate the walls, and; to improve the appearance of the house by re-introducing the 19th Century symmetry. After choosing timber casement windows to replace the rotten sashes, a number of wall insulation solutions were considered. The owner decided that external insulation would help resolve the aesthetics issue and deal with both the threat of failing pointing and general poor weather-

proofing. Houlston Manor is solid-walled and without a damp-proof course and the risk of moisture condensation within the walls was considered to be of paramount importance. The use of breathable materials, which would allow vapour transfer through the insulating layer, was essential and the Lime Green Warmshell system, which uses wood fibre board as the insulation layer and lime render as a weather-proofer, was judged to fit the bill. The sustainable Warmshell insulation system is flexible ad perfect for bringing an old traditionally constructed building up to modern energy efficiency standards.

To install the Warmshell system at Houlston Manor, wood-fibre insulation boards were fixed directly to the external brickwork after excavating down around the sides of the house at ground level – a precaution taken as the house had different floor levels internally. The insulation boards were then covered by two coats of lime render – a basecoat (with reinforcing fibreglass mesh) and decorative finishing coat. The eaves were also extended to ensure that the roof had significant overhang over the insulation and renders. Houlston Manor is now secure, warm and weather-proof for decades to come. In the first three months following the installation of Warmshell (in winter 2015),

the property used 2800kWh for heating, compared to 6821 kWh in the exact same period the previous year. This represents an incredible 59% reduction in energy costs! As the original brick walls dry out and warm up over time, the owners expect to see even greater energy cost savings. Houlston Manor is now ‘fit for purpose’ for the 21st century and beyond, a warm, cosy and energy efficient family home that will last for many more generations to come. Schöck ISokorb combInatIon meetS berlIn project demandS Affordable living space is a scarce resource in Berlin and helping to resolve the problem is Paragon Apartments, a contemporary inner-city housing complex in the Pankow district. The project centres on the historic and now disused Prenzlauer Berg Hospital building. Two new upper storeys have been added to the original building, three further existing buildings modified and there are two new structures. The ‘cube theme’ design comprises 217 high specification apartments – ranging from compact studios to rooftop duplexes – plus a kindergarten, a café and a supermarket. All are designed as a three-dimensional façade, with terraces and a shifting stacked balcony pattern involving prefabricated concrete elements with glazed surfaces.

Archetech - Page 26

a complex structural desIgn The Paragon building envelope and balcony construction is complex and to minimise potential thermal bridging problems, Schöck has supplied three of its main Isokorb types. First the Isokorb KXT, for concrete-to-concrete applications, which has been awarded the low ‘thermal bridge construction‘ certificate by the Passivhaus Institute in Darmstadt confirming its suitability, even for passivhaus construction. In the design, the plate and the canopy element for the balcony below act structurally on the same floor. So it is necessary to connect the two free-cantilevered reinforced concrete plates using the appropriate Isokorb types in an alternating pattern. The standard Schöck Isokorb type KXT with straight shear and tension rods, is alternated with the Isokorb type KXT-HV. This has off-centre shear and tension rods on one side to enable connection to a downstand beam, where the balcony lies lower

than the floor slab. Both units meet the most demanding specifications and transfer both negative moments and positive shear forces two addItIonal IsokorB types In addition to the type KXT, the Isokorb types EXT and KS are also incorported. The EXT normally complements the type KXT in bearing high loads involving cantilevered external corner balconies – but on this occasion supports the side wall loads. The KS is installed where there is a requirement for the free cantilevered steel girder canopy elements to be secured to the reinforced concrete slab. The Paragon Apartments project provides an interesting example of how, by designing-in a combination of Schöck Isokorb types, a variety of differing project specification challenges can be met for a free copy of the schöck thermal Bridging guide and / or the thermal Bridging solutions brochure – contact the company on 01865 290 890 or visit www.schoeck.co.uk

a new sustainable orthopaedic clinic is enhanced with Selectaglaze Secondary Glazing Bentinck Street lies between Welbeck Street and Manchester Square in the heart of Marylebone and was named after the family surname of the Duke of Portland. Back in the Victorian era Charles Dickens lived down this street for some time with his father, which is hard to imagine now, with double decker busses passing constantly down this busy thoroughfare. Number 20, part of the Howard De Walden Estate, has been transformed into a high spec orthopaedic clinic. The original timeworn windows were draughty and allowed high levels of noise ingress. The building is within a conservation area, so it was specified that the Georgian faรงade remained. Architects Frank Shaw, generated a design to make the building function in its new role as a clinic. This involved the fitting of secondary glazing to the front elevation of the building, to enhance the acoustic performance and thermal retention of the original glazing.

glass to frame detail which lessens the build-up of dust and dirt on ledges. All the casements were glazed with sealed units housing integral blinds, which help maintain a clean environment, as well as to ensure patient privacy. Selectaglaze subsequently installed 30 units. A tight fitting schedule was set, due to the opening of the centre in Autumn 2017. The installation was a success and the thermal and noise enhancements can be felt in the rooms already. With the addition of secondary glazing, it is hoped patient stays will be quiet, comfortable, private and clean. Ogden Centre Archetech - Page 30

Studio Libeskind

A spiral in plan, the Centre is designed as continuous, stacked and interlocking forms. Clad in a ventilated timber rain screen built from responsibly sourced Scottish larch, the dynamic façade is punctuated with linear bands of operable strip windows and a series of outdoor terraces. In addition, canted curtain walls on the north and south faces bookend the form of the spiral and provide spectacular views of picturesque Durham City and Durham Cathedral. The active form of the building unifies a rigorous, repetitive programme of private work spaces along its perimeter with a communal multi-story interior space activated by gathering spaces and a massive central skylight. A new identity has been created for the Centre resulting in unique individualized workspace that engenders a sense of connection and community.

Daniel Libeskind said: “This project is an example of how to design a highly-sustainable, dynamic building within tight programme requirements. Light and openness is at the core of the design; at every move in the design process we incorporated simple, yet robust materials and considered the users’ experience to create this important building for Durham University.” Visitors to the Centre enter through a glazed lobby infused with light. The interiors employ a natural palette of soft grey concrete columns and ceilings, paired with warm wood finishes and frosted glass. Pushing the offices to the perimeter of the Centre allows each space to benefit from natural light and ventilation. In addition, glazed doors and screens further transmit light from the exterior to the central atrium. Generous roof terraces create spaces for impromptu meetings or places to simply relax and enjoy fresh air.

The CharTer Building and Thames Tower

Architectural transformations have given new life to two out dated office buildings, Thames Tower in Reading and The Charter Building in Uxbridge. The old 1970’s tower block in the heart of Reading town centre and the 1980’s ‘ground scraper’ in Uxbridge have now been successfully renovated and modernised and BCL’s acoustic timber panels featured proudly in both.

Archetech - Page 32

BCL panels were specified in the Charter Building and the Thames Tower by projects’ Architect DN-A. BCL’s design, manufacture and installation teams provided the knowledge and skill needed to ensure the highest standard of work was achieved, and the inherent design flexibility in our systems allowed the architects vision for the buildings to be fulfilled. BCL offer a choice of over 50 timber species. In Thames Tower Bamboo was chosen, and Idigbo in the Charter Building. In both cases the timber had a 3 coat factory applied lacquer finish, providing Class 0 SSF fire protection, including bespoke colour tinting – a standard treatment option in the BCL system, alongside impregnation. As with all BCL systems, the panels were made with secret fixings, giving the timber a clean uninterrupted and modern finish.

each of the buildings have grand reception areas where acoustics are particularly important due to the scale of the spaces. BCL panels allowed the correct acoustic classes to be used and achieve the various reverberation targets, combatting the ambient noise that would be heard in these areas. By carefully selecting the percentage of open area in the panel design, the performance of each BCL system can be tailored and the acoustic class varied so that the correct level of absorption is delivered. Thames Tower and The Charter Building, both completed in early 2017, are great examples of how the BCL system can be uniquely tailored to meet performance and design objectives. The flexibility in the BCL panel system and the deep design experience that BCL bring, including full BIM/Revit support, means that each of our systems can be individual and meet the challenges any project can bring. MASONRY

can DeLiveR incReaSe in HOuSing Concrete block, aircrete, brick and concrete roof manufacturers are now investing in the future. The country needs more housing, and concrete manufacturers are increasing production capacities. The Modern Masonry Alliance response to the government housing white paper makes the case for the performance benefits of masonry construction and the capacity of the industry to deliver. Manufacturers are reporting a doubling of block output to meet the forecast increase in housing starts and that spare capacity remains in the system. Throughout the UK there was significant investment in 2016, and there has been further investment in 2017. This is in the form of replacement of old plants to increase production rates or new additional production lines. Members also continue to extend working hours and bring mothballed production lines into operation to meet increasing demand, and they report that further spare capacity can be brought online as and when demand increases further. Tarmac’s Building Products division is increasing its Durox aerated block manufacturing capacity. It is well positioned to continue to meet high customer demand for quality block products. The second of two existing factories in Essex, is due to open late this year.

Besblock is also working to accommodate the increased housing demand. The firm, formed in 1972 announced in 2016 an investment of £1m including further plans to invest in technology and environmentally friendly vehicles. And it is not only blocks, but bricks as well. Ibstock is boosting capacity having recently invested £54 million into a new factory. This move will increase the production of bricks to deliver an extra 15,000 homes annually from the end of 2017. And finally, investing nearly £8 million to expand capacity at its Leighton Buzzard factory, Forticrete is increasing the volume and quality of concrete roofing materials. The company’s bespoke new tile line has been purpose built, to produce two brand new large format tiles which will deliver cost and time savings. With the government’s pledge to build one million houses before 2020, the efforts already made by UK block, aircrete, brick and concrete roof manufacturers are a step in the right direction in meeting this ambitious target. Homes that people want to live in. Homes that last. Masonry homes provide superior performance benefits, both in construction and in use.

Energy saving The thermal performance of concrete and masonry homes can provide homeowners with the lowest energy bills because of the superior insulation, airtightness and thermal mass.

Long life Purchasing a home is a major investment and the inherent performance of concrete and masonry provides robust and secure homes that will last for many generations.

Low fire risk Concrete and masonry are non-combustible protecting life and property safety for occupants. During construction, these properties also protect the developer and surrounding community from spread of flame.

Quiet Masonry walls can support precast floors which do not squeak: 48% of homeowner noise issues raised with NHBC for detached homes were creaking floors (NHBC Foundation Report NF56).

Flood resilient Homes built from concrete and masonry suffer less damage because they are robust, dimensionally stable and do not rot.

trotec laser:

providing precision to your prototype Trotec is internationally recognised as the leading manufacturer of computercontrolled laser machines for laser engraving, laser cutting and laser marking. Laser technology offers the highest level of precision when creating architectural models. With the ability to mark inscriptions as fine as 1 pt., a Trotec laser aids in replicating even the most intricate of details. Filigree designs and the most detailed geometric shapes can be created to the nearest tenth of a millimetre due to the laser's ultra-fine beam, allowing you to work to the highest level of accuracy. unlimited possibilities A Trotec laser can process with ease the wide range of materials used in the construction of architectural models including woods, textiles, cardboard, foam, polystyrene, acrylic, films and many more. The patented flexx series of Trotec lasers enables the user to mark metal by incorporating both fiber and CO2 laser sources in one job without the need to physically interchange tubes. Easy-to-use JobControl software enables different sections of the workpiece to be colour coded to identify which are suited to fiber or CO2 processing, saving both time and money. A multitude of benefits over traditional tools

Archetech - Page 40

A Trotec laser offers a wide range of benefits over traditional cutting and engraving methods such as milling, plotting and saw cutting. As the laser evaporates the material, no swarf or shavings are produced, reducing disposal costs. The beam remains 'laser sharp' and can process a range of materials in varying thicknesses and shapes without the requirement for many different tool heads. Thus reducing production time and eliminating sharpening costs. Material processing using a laser cutter is contactless with no pressure being exerted on the material, reducing preparation time and the risk of damage which is present when clamping material for milling. Laser cutting also produces crystal clear edges when handling acrylic, removing the requirement for manual flame polishing. Customers confirm that when cutting individual components using a Trotec laser, production times can be reduced by up to 80% compared to manual production methods. "The speed, quality of the finished product and efficiency are all far superior" confirms customer Phoebe

Nickols, Architectural Assistant at Liddicoat & Goldhill. for more information and to request a sample demonstrating what a laser machine can achieve for architectural model makers, complete the contact form at www.troteclaser.co.uk or call 0191 580 1182 quoting activity number 7556. trotec also manufactures and supplies a wide range of materials including laminates, wood and acrylic. go to www.engraving-supplies.co.uk to see the full range.

A HELPING HAND WiTH unDeRfLOOR HeaTing

It’s an increasingly popular feature to specify, especially for tile and stone; but when it comes to underfloor and surface heating, one size does not fit all. For this very reason, Schlüter-Systems offers a variety of solutions. The two system technologies available on the market today have differing benefits and features, so we’ve put together a brief overview to help in selecting the best complement to your project.

Archetech - Page 46

why use electrIc? Electric systems are ideal for providing additional comfort in specific areas or rooms. There are a couple of reasons why electric systems are best used in this way, namely the cost of electricity and the characteristics of the heating experience. An electric system is designed to raise the temperature of the surface rather than the room, so is an enhancement to as opposed to a replacement for a primary heat source. They are generally cheap to install, quick to warm up and easy to retro-fit. specIfy thIs: schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E is the perfect integrated electric solution for the heating and protection of tile and stone coverings. The uncoupling matting prevents cracks in the finished installation and eliminates the need for self-levelling, and its unique studded design means that the cable is easily pressed into place with no need for tape, glue or measurement. Provision of the mat and cable as separate elements means that the heating system can be custom designed around the features of a room, ensuring the most efficient use of materials and saving on running costs. DITRA-HEAT-E is available in kits or as individual components, for maximum flexibility, and can be used to heat both walls and floors for that added touch of luxury. Dependent on your project requirements, the system can be specified with standard DITRAHEAT or with DITRA-HEAT-DUO matting, the latter of which offers

an integrated thermal break and impact sound reduction of up to 13dB (perceived as a 50% reduction by the human ear). why use hydronIc? Hydronic (or ‘wet’) systems are ideal for large scale coverage and ‘whole-house’ scenarios. Designed to heat the air within a room as well as the surface covering, they are a primary heat source and can therefore replace radiators, connecting directly to a boiler. Although installation is more expensive than with an electric system, running costs are cheaper. Hydronic systems can be powered by a number of different fuel sources, including ground source heat pumps, and as well as warming a space can also be used for gentle passive cooling during the summer months. specIfy thIs: schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM is the patented hydronic underfloor heating solution with an ultra-low construction height. A screed height of just 8mm above the studs of the panels is all that is required, which results in quicker warm-up times as well as considerable material and weight savings in comparison to other wet systems. A building can also be put into use more rapidly as there is no need to wait weeks for the screed to cure before tiles are installed. BEKOTEC-THERM can be configured to work with Building Management Systems (BMS) and a number of variants suitable for retrofitting are available. Schlüter-Systems can also provide a full design service for all BEKOTEC-THERM installations, with our experts ensuring that the system is used to its full potential. All of Schlüter’s products are designed to work together—you can use DITRA-HEAT-E in partnership with BEKOTEC-THERM, to further elevate the underfloor heating experience. The Centro Botín, a space for art, culture and education, projecting into the Bay of Santander, will restore to the city the immense dockland site of the Albareda mole, used until now as a parking lot. This is a strategic area, overlooking the sea, near the old city centre and enhanced by the historic Jardines de Pereda. The centre was strongly supported by Emilio Botín (1934-2014), president of Banco Santander and financed by the Botín Foundation, one of the most important private foundations in Spain, established in 1964 with the aim of fostering the social, economic and cultural development of Cantabria. The project restores the ties between the historical part of the city and the sea. The freeway separating the park from the sea has now been rung underground through a tunnel, making it possible to double the area of the Jardines de Pereda, extending them to the seafront and restoring pedestrian access to the sea for Santander’s citizens.

Hemmed in between the park and the sea, and on the axis of the public market, the new Centro Botín is half based on the land and the other half suspended over the water on stilts. This avoids obstructing the view of the sea and the beautiful bay landscape for people strolling in the park, as the Centro Botín is cleverly masked by the foliage of trees. A series of light walkways of steel and glass separate the two rounded volumes of the building and create a new square set above grade and fully public. Stairways and elevators then lead up to the two blocks of the cultural centre. From here the “springboard” over the sea projects twenty metres beyond the mole. The two-lobed form of the Centro Botín is the outcome of a laborious progressive refinement of the design with the use of models. This gave rise to a rounded form that provides better illumination of the ground floor and accompanies the view of visitors and citizens looking out from the park to the sea. The two bodies that make up the building are completely faced with 280,000 small, slightly rounded ceramic tiles, pearl-coloured and vibrant, that reflect the sunlight, the sparkle of the water, and the rarefied atmosphere of Cantabria.

the project reStoreS the tIeS between the hIStorIcal part of the cIty and the Sea The east volume houses an auditorium rising to double height and cantilevered over the sea, and to the north, the educational centre: spaces designed with the maximum flexibility to adapt to multiple activities. The auditorium has been conceived as a multifunctional box that can host concerts, readings, lectures, but also festivals and ceremonies, while the rooms of the education centre are designed to offer spaces of varying sizes to host future workshops of creative art, music, dance and cookery for both children and adults.

An amphitheatre hewn out of the park runs alongside the Centro Botín, its west façade equipped with a LED screen for screenings and outdoor cinema. On the ground floor a fully transparent façade encloses a multifunctional space animated by a café, restaurant, commercial space and the information centre. Here the ceiling is covered with ceramic and the floor is a continuation of the external blue concrete paving. In this way, the inner and outer space are almost indistinguishable and visitors and citizens can see the sea and landscape of the bay framed by the broad eaves of the building which shelter the tables outside, creating a space for gathering and socializing. Building, park and city are clasped in an intimate bond.

Page 57 - Archetech

In the west volume the exhibition galleries unfold on two levels, characterized by a spectacular double view over the sea and the park. The exhibition space on the upper floor is illuminated zenithally by glass roofing consisting of four layers: an outer level composed of small silkscreened glass slats which prevent stray light from entering the gallery space directly; a second layer of double glazing which seals the gallery; a third layer consisting of small aluminium louvers automatically controlled by a system

of sensors that can be used to black out the interior and make the lighting flexible; and lastly, under the main beams, a semitransparent white fabric that creates a uniform space and diffuses the light while revealing the complex structure of the roof.

bi-folding glazed doors and thereby increasing capacity from 130 guests to 160. With a full house for weddings in 2017, (120+ weddings booked), over 100 weddings already booked for 2018 and prime dates in 2019 booking fast, the extension was a must.

Tunnels Beaches is a network of hand carved tunnels leading to sheltered beaches and a tidal Victorian bathing pool at Ilfracombe, the location of a breath-taking beach front wedding venue operated by Devon Beach Weddings. The bespoke building curving out of the rock means there are no concerns about the UK weather and whatever turn it takes it is all visible through curved bi-folding glazed doors – whether opened or closed.

Awlwood Joinery already had a good relationship with the owners Jamie and Zoe McLintock having worked with them at the Tunnels Beaches Bath House – an old Victorian bath house – which was turned in to wedding accommodation for the venues guests, so when the scheme was mooted to install curving bi-folding doors the McLintock’s turned to David Wray at Awlwood Joinery. “It wasn’t anything we had done before but we are skilled guys and the concept is not beyond the reach of man – after all we can send men to the moon – so we undertook the commission. The architect, RGP of Barnstaple, came up with a scheme and we did as they instructed – but with fewer doors (two sets, opening out). The design included wood cladding and lots of steel.

The owner had the idea to refurbish and at the same time to extend the upper story of the curved building by 2 metres, installing curved

Brio team which takes panels up to 1 metre wide. The decision was led by the architect’ plans and the constraints of the timber as you cannot have huge pieces of curved timber so we had to make up the doors from smaller pieces that would eventually be bolted together on site. The actual frame was put together by the owner’s site carpenters.” David Wray says: “I am very pleased with the results especially with Brio’s new dual point locking mechanism. Most bi-folding doors are locked top and bottom which means reaching up and bending down to operate. The new Brio system is a finger locking mechanism. I am so impressed with it I am using it on all jobs. It may be more expensive but it is well worth the investment for the huge improvement and simplified operation and it looks so much better. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock system launched last year has been joined by Brio’s 288 Lever Furniture to give joiners a deluxe option to offer their customers who now, more than ever, are looking for aesthetics as well as practicality. Brio’s 286 Dual Point Lock is suitable for Brio’s tough exterior folding system Weatherfold 4s with timber or aluminium panels and for single hinge panels, such as French doors, up to 3.5 metres high, offering an alternative to the standard flushbolts. It is both ultra secure and aesthetically pleasing.

“I am also impressed with Brio R&D – they are always coming up with new ideas and fixes. Best on the market. The solutions are

According to David Newton, General Manager UK at Brio, the demand for bi-folding and sliding exterior and interior doors is set to continue apace, with a variety of aesthetic demands from delicate ‘floating’ glass systems to commercial style projects such as this example in North Devon. “What this means in practice is that Brio, with its range of product and flexible attitude, will continue to keep pace with the architect’s need for innovative product that can transform anything they design on paper into reality,” he says. for more details on the BrIo product range visit www.briouk.com

HOw TO CHOOSE A FRONT DOOR FOR

A HOUSE wITH TIMBER CLADDING? WORDS: eLizabeTH aSSaf, DeSigneR, uRban fROnT

With buildings becoming more contemporary and home frontages involving many different finishes, the dilemma of what front door to choose seems to be even more complicated. It’s an even harder decision if you are having cladding too. To help our clients make a decision we usually ask them to consider the following: 1. Is the cladding being left to weather or is it being treated or finished? This determines whether or not it’s necessary that the front door matches the cladding. Usually if cladding is going to be left to silver, the finish of the door is easier to choose. If the cladding is going to be finished or keep its original colour, then matching or going for a painted finish works better. However, there is also the option to go for an opposite colour completely – for example – choosing a dark wood like fumed oak to work with western red cedar cladding. 2. Is the cladding going to be horizontally or vertically boarded or even both? A lot of customers believe that everything should match but, the door can be more of a focal point if the boarding is going in a different direction. This also reduces the difficulty of matching the door exactly to cladding that comes right up to the door. 3. If the house has a lot of cladding, it’s also worth considering not going down the hardwood look and going for a painted finish. This works particularly well if the house has more than 50% cladding over the surface of it. Making this choice, breaks up the timber look and creates even more of a focal point. 4. If the cladding being used is a colour or painted a colour like grey for instance, it is either worth matching the RAL colour or going a few shades darker or lighter depending on where the door sits on the houses elevation. Or another choice is to then go for a timber front door that is completely different to make the door stand out. 5. Another concern is if the house already has a lot of different materials going on like a wood lookalike cladding system, aluminium windows and zinc roofing. We tend to try and find the least used material to match to as it could look too balanced and that wouldn’t necessarily be the best end result. 6. We always find that it’s best to lay all the samples of the different materials down in front of you and also be aware of the fact that each material will take up a different amount of space on that frontage. Fine tuning with samples like this always helps to put the bigger picture into perspective. On the whole, it isn’t a decision taken lightly because cladding will also change in colour over time. Thinking about that will definitely help and if you feel that it is still too difficult, we can always help you. Just give us a call to discuss your project in detail.

The drive for continual improvement in the performance and appearance of Schueco’s systems remains a development priority for the company. A recently launched façade system shows some significant advances.

Archetech - Page 64

Uniquely slim Schueco FWS 35 PD façade is Passive House certified The continuing drive by Schueco to combine the slimmest possible face-widths with the highest possible thermal performance is clearly demonstrated in the company’s new FWS 35 PD panorama design façade system.

In addition, a choice of two levels of insulation – HI (highly insulated) or SI (super-insulated) – enables the façade to deliver performance flexibility that can be tailored closely to individual specification requirements.

Reducing the face-width to a uniquely slim 35 mm has been made possible by the development of an innovative new installation system for the glass and pressure plate. This in turn has allowed the SI version of the façade to be officially certified by the Passive House Institute with a Ucw value of 0.79 W/m2K.

Importantly, Schueco AWS windows, including those with TipTronic automated operation, can be easily integrated into the façade for ventilation where necessary. As an alternative, Schueco AWS 114 SG.SI slimline outward-opening top-hung or parallel-opening windows are also simple to insert.

This is a level of performance which, in conjunction with such minimal framing, would once have been considered unachievable. Visually attractive with sharp-edge profile radii, the Schueco FWS 35 PD façade system is ideally suited for low-rise, high-end residential and commercial projects.

The Schueco FWS 35 PD façade system can accommodate double and triple glazed units from 22 mm to 50 mm thick with weights up to 250 kg per transom. To add further design versatility, a heavy duty version that can carry up to 440 kg is also available. A total of three drainage levels provide an easy solution for all types of transom and,

because it plays such a crucial role in the durability of ultra-slim systems, particular thought has been given to the question of ventilation. In fact, the Schueco FWS 35 PD façade uses the proven ventilation technology found in the basic Schueco FWS 50+ systems, but supplements this with additional intelligent components. Its effectiveness in use has been verified under the most stringent conditions. All in all, the Schueco FWS 35 PD panorama design façade offers eloquent testimony to the role that advanced technology can play in producing buildings that fully answer the challenges of design, comfort, security and sustainability in the 21st Century. Cyden Homes engaged with national award winning architect, Jonathan Hendry Associates, to bring to fruition the innovative Par 3 in Humberston - a contemporary village development within a protected and managed environment. Among the fairways of the former Humberston Golf Course, meticulously designed residences were constructed by Cyden Homes to take maximum advantage of the natural environment.

Archetech - Page 68

With the different styles and finishes to the houses, reflecting the surrounding natural beauty, it was important that the chosen rainwater system emulated the uniqueness of the buildings’ exteriors. “In respect of the guttering and down pipes, the architect had specified milled finish aluminium rainwater goods to go with the contemporary external design. Our fitter, John Gothorpe had dealt with Yeoman Rainguard previously and recommended we got in contact.” Explained Peter Bond, sales & marketing director for Cyden Homes. Yeoman Rainguard’s SL Aluminium products were decided upon, in a milled finish, to complement the building materials used for the development.

SL Aluminium half round 125 x 75mm gutters along with 75mm dia. down pipes were installed on the residences with Plain Cast Aluminium Hoppers added to some garage/out buildings. Aluminium rainwater systems not only offer aesthetic advantages but are also easy and quick to fit saving on site installation times when fitting to multiple units. Being a very durable product Rainguard SL Aluminium rainwater systems will offer a long and maintenance free lifecycle, added to the fact that it is a 100% recyclable material, it becomes an ecologically sound choice. “The style of finish on Yeoman Rainguard SL gutters and downpipes has been well received by the customers as it is a ‘noticeable’ addition, helping to affirm the uniqueness of the development.” Concluded Mr Bond. for more information on yeoman rainguard sl aluminium range, or indeed any of their products then go to www.rainguard.co.uk or call 0113 279 5854.

Decentralised continuous flow hot water heating systems an alternative to central plant Centralised plant rooms for heating and hot water systems are a traditional solution and have been so for many years. But we live in different times where economic and energy efficiency – and legislative compliance – are demanded by users, premises owners and managers in both public and private sectors. An alternative solution that marries high efficiency and wide ranges of modulation with simplicity of installation and design is the gas fired continuous flow hot water heating unit. These can be manifolded into a hot water system capable of coping with virtually any size of site or application. This system is a process of delivering a continuous flow of hot water at a constant temperature, without the need for storage. Continuous flow will only ever utilise energy whenever heat is needed i.e., the turning on of a tap in a washroom or a kitchen. When the units are in operation and heating water - gas is used - when the user is finished, so is the energy usage. With continuous flow systems, the user can set the required temperature of hot water to suit the needs and demands of the site. So, vulnerable users, such as children, the elderly or less able, can be safeguarded from the risk of scalding. Also, where the site has a secondary recirculating system the temperatures can be set at a level to further minimise the possibility of the proliferation of Legionella bacteria. Condensing continuous flow hot water solutions qualify for additional energy efficiency points, boosting building energy performance as they far exceed energy efficiencies called for in Part L Building Regulations (Conservation of fuel and power). The systems are also ‘A’ rated under ErP. Current thinking on the design of systems is moving towards separating the hot water production from the heating system completely as it can give better efficiencies all round. Buildings need hot water all year round. However, better insulation in most buildings, and a greater awareness of energy efficiency, means there

is a reduced need for heating input. In large commercial buildings, centralised heating and hot water systems have traditionally adopted the thermal storage design. These systems are frequently over-sized at the design stage in relation to actual usage on the not too scientific basis of ‘just in case’. This ‘hedging of bets’ approach to system design often leads to excessive safety margins, which in turn adds to the expense of purchase, installation and running costs. A storage type, conventional system of hot water that must be heated 24/7, 365 days a year to ensure hot water is always available is an anachronism in today’s energy and cost-conscious world. Even if no hot water is drawn off, a standard cylinder, just for example, can lose a maximum of 3Kw of heat a day as a standing loss. All cylinders suffer from this to some extent and it equates, over a year, to 1095Kw of energy wasted. If you also look at the gas saving alone it equates to 101.8m₃ of gas used. Decentralised hot water provision was recently installed at a luxury country club and spa in the leafy and very affluent Cheshire countryside. The site operators, having both the contractor and the consultant make calculations on usage and life cycle costings, was adamant that a stored hot water system was not in the frame for the new fit out as it would be “inefficient and expensive”. The company went on to specify 19 gas fired condensing continuous flow units over the whole site to fulfil its huge demand for 20,000 litres per hour of safe, temperature controlled hot water. The heavy-duty units feed executive soaker showers, poolside showers and all changing room ablutions. Within this complex, the water heaters feed the showers directly so there is no need for re-circulation around the building. With no centralised boiler room having to be incorporated into the plans. Elsewhere, one local authority in North Wales is currently in the process of replacing its stored hot

water systems with manifolded continuous flow systems. The council is set to make considerable savings on running costs. When the water isn’t running the continuous flow, system is not using fuel, which is ideal for the schools’ shut down during the holidays, for example. These claims and assertions have been borne out by independent scrutiny. Recent independent testing - by AECOM - of continuous flow hot water systems showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with indirect stored and stored hot water systems. The AECOM findings, after extensive deliberation, found that the brand’s continuous flow water heaters are 7.5% more economical than ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. Decentralised water heating saves energy and money, but it also offers flexibility. If, for example, a hot water store cylinder should burst or break down, the whole system is shut down - no more hot water until the problem is fixed. With a manifolded system one unit may be at fault but this doesn’t stop the whole system shutting down. The problem of potential legionella proliferation is also better maintained in the design of a manifolded continuous flow system. In a continuous flow unit, water temperature for distribution is accurate to ±1˚C. The fact that there is no stratification as there is no storage ensures permanent even temperature and because of this there is no requirement to heat a volume of water just to ensure the elimination of legionella. Another plus is, if demand grows, additional plant can easily be added in a modular fashion at a later stage if required. In addition, smart controls can be added to commercial condensing continuous flow systems to boost and govern the performance of the hot water system. for more details on rInnaI products visit www.rinnaiuk.com

SIZE MATTERS geT THe RigHT Size HOT WaTeR HeaTing uniT & SySTem TO fiT THe SiTe - Rinnai New from Rinnai, the UK’s leader in continuous flow hot water heating, is a Site Sizing Service designed to give the right amount of hot water delivery to meet existing and planned needs. The new service initiative from Rinnai - available over email, iPhone and site visit - is to give contractors and users the right mix of products and system which fit the needs of the site, rather than a ‘one size fits all approach’ seen with traditional hot water heating systems. “Every site is different, as all installers know, and the tradition of oversizing a system ‘just in case’ is a very costly way for a site to have hot water on demand. The very basis of our product concept is that the end-user only pays for the fuel to heat the hot water at the point of use. There are very few sites that might need a stored hot water facility - but this is very expensive - its rather like keeping a car’s engine running just in case you want to drive it. It is as simple as that,” says Rinnai head of Operations, Chris Goggin. He adds, “We are inviting contractors, designers, installers, endusers and consultants to contact us in person to discuss their new installations so that we can recommend the right system specific to the site. Our product can cope with virtually any size of commercial site - hotels, hospitals, schools, office blocks and larger residential properties and we have proven systems configured to cope with the biggest commercial premises - right through to Government departments such as the Welsh Office or 350 plus bed hotels. The complete, bespoke and personalised system is designed for the specific need of the site or user and we have a proven record of adding significant value to our customers. The Rinnai product range includes the Infinity HDC1600i, a premium condensing hot water heater tested to below 20 ppm NOx, producing the lowest emissions on the market, with 97% gross efficiencies. Also in this established and proven range of award winning products is the condensing HDC1200 internal and external models which give an energy performance of 107% net efficiency while the larger Rinnai HDC1500 internal and external models have 105% net efficiency. Rinnai Infinity condensing units also exceed all the demands of Part L Building Regulations. The Rinnai HD50i internal water heater and HD70e external water heater offer greater flexibility at the design stage and can offer an alternative solution where flue runs are problematic or internal space is not available. They are excellent units for refurbishment projects.

Using a modular system of either internal or external Rinnai HD or HDC condensing water heaters and a stainless steel storage vessel, demands in excess of 20,000 litres per hour can be satisfied. Rinnai Infinity Plus Storage packs are delivered direct to site in one complete package. Rinnai units are ‘renewables ready’ when used as a gas booster to solar thermal or heat pump installations in maximizing renewable heat gains. It is the only booster that ensures a hot shower or bath any time of the day or night. The rest of the time the gas fired unit is inactive minimizing energy usage. Rinnai’s development and investment in integral smart controls for its appliances enable smart integration with sophisticated BMS systems allowing multi data monitoring which in turn identifies areas where energy, service and breakdown efficiencies can be improved. Each digital remote controller can be individually programmed, to deliver temperature accurate hot water for washing and cleaning however the water heater can only deliver one set temperature at any time. Remote temperature controllers cannot override the master temperature setting made with the DIP switches within the heater ensuring safety. Controllers can also deliver basic fault diagnosis. Rinnai also fields a common header flue system to streamline manifolded installations of its award-winning Infinity condensing units. Another simple but effective idea which safeguards against lime scale build up occurring in Rinnai continuous flow water heaters a scale control system continually monitors the appliances for lime scale deposits around the heat exchanger. Also in the range is the Infinity Solo. This is a Rinnai hot water heating unit which combines the advanced technology of its wall mounted water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. And it boasts very low heat loss figures. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com

‘Hot Topics’ with vogue (UK) Most consumers will only buy a radiator or towel warmer one to three times in a lifetime and therefore now consider it a luxury purchase for the home. Becoming more comfortable to explore the advantages of bespoke heating design, models which are luxurious and non-specific to a certain room are performing best right now. Offering endless styles and combinations to heat the home, premium design radiators and towel warmers are now available with integral fold-away storage rails, practical mirrors and remote control function to ensure the height of convenience and utility. The introduction of atypical materials and finishes has also become the latest look in interior fashion, compelling the need for more unexpected, advantageous heating design at the higher end of the market. Helping to create a minimalist aesthetic, metallic finishes are elevating contemporary heating designs for the better, welcoming new finishes like brushed and bright nickel or antique copper or brass as a point of difference.

This desire has also led to developments in texture, allowing homeowners the opportunity to move away from the standard smooth, highly polished chrome aesthetic. The market now offers a choice of matt finishes and tarnished effects to choose from, and for the height of contrast, homeowners can combine this style of rail finish with an integrated flat panel radiator in granite or coloured glass. This is a great way to give your customers a sense of personal style, as well as move away from the standard white finish to create a heating solution suited to any décor, interior or individual. By taking a more advisory role with your client, you can focus on design creativity and service as this will help achieve a positive outcome for all. For instance, selecting the right finish and material is just as important as style; you need to make sure the model chosen co-ordinates with the fixtures and fittings already in place and plays to the modern homeowner that yearns for high attention to detail. vogue (uk) - www.vogueuk.co.uk - 01902 387 000

aSPecT 4 cOmPacT: The aspect 4 compact may be the smallest of the aspect range, but it certainly kicks out some heat. This DefRa approved stove offers a brilliant view of the flames, all whist utilising space efficiently.

It was February of 2015, and Hunter Stoves Group’s Research and Development team were working on trying to improve a few of their original Herald wood stove models. Rain pelted the roof of the Cornish factory, as flooded country roads were making it hard for people to get to work that day. “I thought it was going to be one of those days; going over old designs and finding ways to improve them,” said Hunter Stoves Group’s Lead Engineer, Mike Stoneman. Sixty miles away, Paul Grimes, the Managing Director of the company, was sitting at his desk typing an email. The company was doing well, its seven different stove brands and 40 years of history had set a solid foundation for growth, but where to go next, “was and will always be the question. It was a two-line email If I remember correctly. It was based on a conversation I had with Steve,” said Paul. Paul Grimes and Steve Clatworthy bought the company in 1996 and together they re-established its Herald Stove brand as a leading British stove range. They then developed the full series of brands that make the Hunter Stoves Group the internationally renowned stove manufacturer it is today. The email Mike Stoneman got from Paul that morning got him both excited and worried in equal parts. “All the R&D Brief said was, ‘Biggest viewing window possible, hyper responsive and extremely efficient. Simple single control.’ It was the type of brief you want, but that you sort of dread,” said Mike.

Archetech - Page 90

For the next few months the whole team focused their efforts on the stoves that would become the Parkray Aspect stove collection. “It seemed simple, but once we started making the window larger and larger, it got increasingly complicated,” said Hunter Stoves’ Lead Engineer. The frames of the stove doors had to be smaller than anything that had been designed up until then, and the increased size of the window meant that the stove’s Airwash technology system — the streams

of air designed to keep the stove’s window clean — had to be modified to account for the extra surface area. “They finally did it,” remarked Paul with a smile, “and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the results. Once I saw the stove and saw how it performed, I knew we had something special.” Wood stove buyers seemed to agree, and after six months on the market the Parkray Aspect collection represented 16% of the Hunter Stove Group’s total sales revenue. “All our stoves are built to last, eco-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing. We have something for everyone and for every type of home. With the Aspect, we wanted to take what had been done in terms of glass size and stove quality, and take it that much further. I’m happy to say that people liked what we came up with,” said Paul. Fast-forward to September 2017, and the Parkray Aspect stoves have taken the wood stove market by storm and are the Hunter Stoves Group’s best-selling range. With new models and a double-sided version on the way, the future looks bright for these new wood stoves.

APPLETHWAITE

HOMES

The residential development arm of the Eric Wright Group

A major construction and development company operating across the North of England, appointed IntelliHeat Advanced Electric Heating for the specification and supply of the Electric heating systems for their recent development Applethwaite Hall, in Windermere providing quality homes in North West England. After researching the market and comparing products, Steven Speight from the Eric Group contacted Intelliheat. Steven understood the critical importance of identifying a product that not only would it be energy efficient, but a product of high quality that would suit the style and high-spec of the development. Equally important was the after sales care to ensure the products were set-up in the optimal fashion to deliver on all the efficiency tools that feature on modern IntelliHeat electric heating systems, and a professional technical support team who could be contacted by both the developers and in future by the property owners, ensuring that the long guarantee provided with the products meant that the client would never be more than a phone call away from resolution!

In addition to the excellent service that Applethwaite received by IntelliHeat, the other key consideration for the purchase was the cost of supply and installation. The cost of supply and installation for the entire 12 IntelliHeat systems with remote programming and energy monitoring technology included was reasonably and surprisingly well within their budget whereas just supply and installation of the gas boiler and wet systems for the 12 properties would have been much higher. Furthermore, the developer would have needed to pay to have the gas routed and supplied to the properties which would have added additional, considerable cost. The client has been delighted with the smart heating and the service they have received. The addition of the IntelliHeat product range to Applethwaite Developments client proposal has added value and choice to the developers offering - making customers feel valued, improving the quality of the property offering and delivering a truly bespoke Smart electric heating experience for each and every customer! If you would like to extend your product range and add a quality solution to your off-grid developments just contact IntelliHeat and they will provide you with all required branded marketing collateral to suit your corporate identity. INTELLI HEAT© Advanced Heating Solutions | T: 0845 163 0055 | www.intelligentheat.co.uk

Page 93 - Archetech

Having taken into consideration all the factors involved with the specification of the heating systems for these properties it was decided that the only sensible solution was to proceed with the IntelliHeat product. Following an initial product specification process, Applethwaite settled on the Cali Eco-Sense range with Sophia Towel Rails in bathrooms and en-suites. All facilitated through an app based remote control and energy monitoring system, the IntelliHeat Smart-phone based WHAPP

system. In total, over 50 Cali Eco Sense radiators, 21 towel rails and 12 remote programming and energy monitoring WHAPP systems were specified and installed across the 12 flats and all communal areas.

A House in Yarmouk Studio Toggle

The Yarmouk private villa is home to two brothers and their families in Kuwait. The volume is divided in the center of the plot into two identical units housing the independent quarters of each of the two families. A series of light wells and balconies throughout the house, along with a discreet garden space on the ground floor, focuses on the project’s main narrative of diffused natural lighting. The basement of the house and its roof terrace cap the building with elements of unity and interaction, where the siblings and their families are able to get together and socialize. The basement includes a large banquet hall with light wells on either side to bring in ample natural light. The room, covered completely in travertine, sets a more classic and elegant atmosphere for larger gatherings. The basement also includes parking facilities for 10 cars and a staff quarters, also naturally lit.

outline of client's vision The clients’ vision was very straightforward but challenging as it called for a dense program relative to the plot size on a very restrictive budget. The clients were very specific on the need for two identical yet completely independent units for the two families, and dedicated shared areas for interaction. Parking in the basement was essential due to the dense program and large footprint that would entail. A shared banquet hall, doubling up as the Dewaniya, was also part of client’s requirement. Each unit was to have 5 bedrooms ensuite, a formal living / music room, family living and dining area, a kids play room and a large kitchen. Upper floor was also to have a communal reading space and a pantry. Female staff would be on the second floor with their own suites and the male staff next to the parking in a basement suite with clerestory windows to afford natural lighting and ventilation.

The independent units follow an identical plan although the form is articulated to disrupt symmetry. The ground floor houses the social areas for each family and is flanked by a very private garden that lights up the interiors through large sliding windows. Vertical circulation is organized along the middle of the house and the living spaces organized along the building periphery to maximize natural light. The first floor houses the bedrooms in a similar way along the outer edge, including a sky-lit communal area and a kitchenette in the center.

Page 95 - Archetech

The materiality of the interiors is driven by the hierarchy of the space, ranging from a dramatic music room finished in an aptly titled scandalous marble, to the almost Scandinavian simplicity of the upper levels that houses the bedrooms, pantry and the informal reading room. Subtle warm tones, achieved by a combination of silver travertine cladding with white oil finished ash parquet, set the mood for the ground floor living and dining areas.

The clients requested a simple well-built house that minimizes the need for heavy maintenance and upkeep. Naturally lit, airy spaces were an essential parameter along with private garden spaces scattered around the house. context

Archetech - Page 96

This house is located in Yarmouk, a quiet suburban residential neighborhood in Kuwait. The extremely hot climate and its occasional dust storms and hot desert winds influence the way buildings are designed in these areas. The site faces a suburban residential street, and is enclosed on the other 3 sides by adjacent houses.

design The client’s brief called for a very dense program relative to the allowed footprint and also for the two units to be identical and side-by-side.

The surrounding built fabric consists of independent villas with a more traditional design; allowing this house the opportunity to reflect on certain elements of its surroundings, yet provide a new aesthetic to the street it occupies.

This posed multiple challenges to the architects in terms of finding a balance between enclosed and open spaces, as well as bringing sufficient natural lighting to all areas of the house.

Pedestrian space is limited because cars are generally parked on the pavements, due to the lack of parking spaces and the high number of cars per capita. This issue was tackled by having a well-defined pedestrian pathway in front of the building, integrated with the landscape and also providing more than adequate parking facilities in the basement of the building.

Studio Toggle chose to address these challenges in an incremental manner by creating light wells, balconies and decks affording varied degrees of transparency and porosity throughout the building. This approach resulted in a choreographed sequence of naturally lit spaces with a welldefined hierarchy dictating its degree of privacy

The open-plan ground floor brought natural light into the living and dining area through its wide sliding glass panels leading to the outdoor garden space towards the edge of the plot. While maximizing the natural light, overhangs were employed strategically to decrease direct sunlight and solar heat gain. The garden, with its high walls and louvers fosters greenery and light for the social spaces, including the banquet room in the basement, while affording total privacy from neighboring buildings. A similar technique is applied on the first floor, placing all bedrooms on the parameter to ensure windows in each room for their own natural lighting. A large skylight lights up the resulting interstitial area turning it into a brightly lit communal reading spot. The exterior of the house is finished in an austere palette of white cement render contrasted against the rough grey finish of the window frames and louvers. The louvers afford necessary privacy to the stepped entrance foyer and the roof garden and soften the impact of the crisp white massing. sustainability The design and its requirements birthed a duality between the necessity of natural light and Kuwait’s scorching hot climate. Studio Toggle approached this duality with a multi pronged strategy in which light pockets are distributed along the buildings mass, increasing it porosity while avoiding direct sun. These light pockets, by virtue of their strategic locations, helped in lighting up the interiors while avoiding the harsh direct sunlight. White heat reflecting, and self-cleaning exterior paint system was used to reduce the heat gain as well as repel dust, which is a recurring problem. Louvers and overhangs were generously incorporated to avoid and reduce direct sun and glare. Sensors and smart irrigation systems were incorporated to reduce electricity and water usage and demonstrates a measured saving of almost 20 percent electricity and 40 percent water used for irrigation. Low VOC paint and coating systems were used for better indoor air quality, as the client was very specific in this regard. The project also employs extensive use of ecofriendly cork for acoustic insulation and as underlays below the parquet flooring.

SoluS CeramiCS SeTS The BAR high AT Be AT One

Leading tile supplier, Solus Ceramics, has added a touch of class to the new Be At One cocktail bar in Birmingham with the installation of its Opulence and Program floor and wall tile ranges. Founded by bartenders Steve Locke, Rhys Oldfield and Leigh Miller, the first original Be At One Bar opened in Battersea Rise in 1998. Since then they have created 30 bars around the UK, with Birmingham being the 31st site. Located on Piccadilly Arcade, just outside of the newly revitalised New Street Station, Be At One is a destination cocktail bar serving over 150 drinks with an unbeatable party atmosphere in the heart of Birmingham city centre.

Fusion Design and Architecture who have worked with the brand for eight years and developed many of the bars within the renowned chain designed the late night venue. Solus Ceramics were thrilled once again to collaborate with Fusion Design and Architecture and supplied a variety of unique exciting tile ranges to the bright, bold and energetic bar. The venue, which is situated at basement level, features a vast quantity of traditional style tiles from the Opulence range. The neutral, gloss tiles from the Opulence Range were selected in two sizes to create a chic banded pattern and were paired with a detailed complementary dĂŠcor tile. The neutral hues of the tiles provide a wonderful canvas for the complex mood lighting that changes periodically.

On the bar front, the designers selected a high-end, hand made hexagon tile in a serpentine inspired emerald colour, making the focal point of the establishment really standout. in the male bathrooms, marble effect tiles from the Palace range were used on the walls and paired with plain grey tiles from the versatile Program range that were laid in a herringbone pattern. Solid grey, glass mosaics from the glass Source range completed the space. Featuring similar wall and floor tiles to the adjacent male bathrooms, the female bathrooms were given a blush of colour with a pink mosaic.

Opulence range not only for its aesthetic appeal, but also because of its durability. having worked with Solus Ceramics before, we knew that with the versatility of the tiles and the fantastic ranges of colours available, we would be able to implement the visually appealing interior we were hoping to achieve. “With the bar at basement level, there isn’t any natural light, so it was vitally important for us to implement bright and bold tiles to bring colour into the room. The Opulence range complements the décor of the bar and has allowed us to implement a design aesthetic that brings a new sense of style and vibrancy to Birmingham.”

Jonathan Richardson, Associate at Fusion Design and Architecture, said: “Be At One Bar in Birmingham has been a fantastic project to work on, seeing the transformation of a regular building into a unique, classy cocktail bar.

Michael irvine, Area Sales Manager at Solus Ceramics, said: “Using a variety of relatively traditional ranges, the designers have created something very unique, modern and interesting. i particularly like the look of the classical patterned Opulence décor paired with the field tile, which makes a real feature of the wall space in the bar.”

“One of the key aspects of the brief was to implement a design aesthetic that would be timeless. We specified Solus Ceramics’

Dulwich pavilion

Location London, United Kingdom

Area 192.0 m2

Project Year 2017

The Dulwich Pavilion is a transformative project for Dulwich Picture Gallery and Almacantar, a breakthrough moment for a young architecture practice, and an important legacy for the London Festival of Architecture 2017. The Gallery’s first pavilion extends into the surrounding landscape, celebrating Soane’s original architecture and allowing the Gallery to overcome a lack of existing space and meet increasing visitor demand. IF_DO’s design, developed with engineers StructureMode and realised by bespoke fabricators Weber Industries, offers a model for other cultural institutions facing similar issues, and responds to the LFA’s mission to champion London architecture and promote positive change to the city’s public realm. The London Festival of Architecture and Dulwich Picture Gallery launched the pavilion design competition in autumn 2016, with support from Almacantar. Entrants were challenged to design a contemporary response to the original Soane building and its garden setting, while working with a modest construction budget of just over £100,000. Bermondsey-based practice IF_DO, established in 2014 by Al Scott, Sarah Castle and Thomas Bryans, overcame competition from a field of 75 entries with their design ‘After Image’. It was chosen by a judging panel of leading architectural and cultural figures including Ruth Rogers (chef and founder, River Café), Carl Turner (founder and director, Carl Turner Architects), Mike Hussey (Chief Executive, Almacantar) and Nancy Durrant (arts commissioning editor, The Times)

Page 127 - Archetech

The Dulwich Pavilion has been designed as a temporary public structure, which engages with the adjacent buildings, landscape and visitors alike. Conceptually it responds to the solidity and monolithic nature of Sir John Soane’s Gallery building, and the porous, ever-changing nature of the landscape. Structurally the pavilion is lightweight and minimal, comprising a timber truss roof suspended over a level timber deck supported on three fixed slender mirrored panels. All of the remaining wall panels are moveable or removable, creating a flexible space enabling numerous configurations for different events. A fixed bar/café pod opens up when in use to reveal a serving area.

The reflective quality of the mirrored screens reflects and disrupts the context. Fragments of the building appear in the landscape, and fragments of the landscape in the building. The roof overlaid with a mesh veil creates a canopy-like environment that enhances the layering of images and the interplay of space, perception and memory: this year’s London Festival of Architecture theme. The pavilion’s elegant structure, developed through close collaboration between the architects, engineers and fabricators, demanded precision in both design and manufacture. Bespoke steel, aluminium and timber components were all fabricated by Weber Industries in their Peckham studio, before the structure was assembled on site. The pavilion has been engineered by StructureMode to allow efficient construction, with minimum disruption and environmental impact to the historic grounds.

ORGANOWOOD® 02: A NATURAL WOOD PROTECTION AGAINST DIRT, WATER AND DAMP

THE CLEAR ADVANTAGES OF OSMO UV-PROTECTION-OIL Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes specialist, has developed a quality finish to protect, maintain and restore exterior wood. Osmo UV-Protection-Oil has been specially designed to preserve the natural colour of the wood, leaving it looking in top condition throughout summer months.

OrganoWood®, the natural wood preservation specialist, offers OrganoWood® Repellent 02, the ultimate environmentally friendly and organic solution to protect wood from water, dirt and damp.

Protection of exterior wood is of the upmost importance as the colour can fade after harmful UV rays damage the lignin within the wood. Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is a clear, satin finish for exterior application onto vertical wooden structures only such as doors, cladding, fencing etc. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. This natural protective finish has been produced to resist the greying effect on exterior wood due to exposure to the sun, maintaining the wood’s natural aesthetics. The UV-Protection-Oil 410 consists of natural ingredients and is safe for use on children’s play equipment, flower boxes as well as animal housing, whilst UV-Protection Oil Extra 420 contains additional active-ingredients perfectly blended in order to reduce algae and fungal decay and provide optimal protection during winter periods. For horizontal/flat surfaces, including decking, tables and benches, a pigmented finish is required to protect against the wood’s natural greying process. It is advised to select a mid-dark colour tone for stronger UV-protection. Alternatively, choose a colour that is as close as possible to the natural wood’s colour, to preserve the natural appearance. Both Osmo Decking-Oil and Natural Oil Woodstain product ranges offer a wide selection of colours. The Natural Oil Woodstain range can be expertly mixed to any RAL/NCS colour, resulting in over 2,000 options. The transparent nature of the finish allows the natural characteristics and aesthetics of the wood to remain visible, maintaining the natural feel and story of the wood itself.

For additional information on Osmo’s range of eco-friendly wood finishes, please visit www.osmouk.com, or call 01296 481220.

The fastest, cleanest and easiest way to construct a green roof Pre-grown sedum green roof system in an easy to carry module tray

A water-based wood treatment, it includes no toxic heavy metals, solvents or biocides, making it an environmentally friendly option. Organic silicon polymers within the product bond to internal fibres as it dries, and due to the unique OrganoWood® technology, creates a natural barrier from water, dirt and damp. The product ensures the wood will remain its natural colour, and over time, will adopt a beautiful natural silver hue. OrganoWood® 02 is available in 1L, 5L and 10L bottles with each litre covering approximately 8-10 metres. In order to treat the wood and yield the best results, OrganoWood suggests selecting a day when there is a lesser risk of rain, dew or frost and the temperature is above 10 °C. The full OrganoWood wood protection system consists of OrganoWood® 01. Protection which offers rot and fire protection, OrganoWood® 02. Repellent to provide a dirt and water repellent surface and OrganoWood® 03. Cleaner, an organic wood cleaner for general and intensive cleaning and maintenance of the wood. Inspired by nature, OrganoWood® technology mimics natural processes to protect wood, a tried and tested ecological alternative to pressure treated finishes. With being both sustainable and aesthetically pleasing the OrganoWood® solution is a perfect choice for both domestic and commercial use.

A West Sussex based architect firm approached us to discuss their client’s outdoor living requirements. This was for a 2 metre wide balcony running the full 23 metre length of a large property on both sides. From here a staircase to ground level was needed to reach a large deck with integrated hot tub. This was to be built over existing natural ground, tiles, and concrete. The following week, we arranged to meet with the architects to discuss the project requirements further and to view their drawings and designs. From this, we could propose our Complete Outdoor Living Solution comprising of an integrated QwickBuild deck frame, ResortDeck composite decking, and a MiniPost frameless glass balustrade system. Given the versatility and durability of all our products both in the short and long term, the architects agreed this was to be the perfect solution for the demands of the project, especially due to its coastal location. QwickBuild is manufactured from marine grade anodised structural aluminum and offers 100 per cent moisture resistance and dimensional stability. Furthermore, the Mini-Posts used for our frameless glass balustrades are manufactured from marine grade 2205 duplex stainless steel offering the most superior corrosion resistance when compared to alternatives. Our design team flew over to Alderney two weeks later to perform a full site survey. As per the architects briefing, the job had some complex build requirements, however we were pleased to confirm our systems could make these relatively straight forward. The QwickBuild deck frame offered the perfect solution for building the lower deck over uneven natural ground and existing pavers. This was due to the use of its adjustable height deck jacks which can range from just 3mm to 600mm. Therefore, no resurfacing was required prior to installation which speeded up the process. Another factor which enabled faster installation than traditional methods was the QwickBuild substructure for the balcony could be prefabricated into made-to-measure frames at our UK based workshop prior to delivery.

Although the membrane did not need disrupting to install the QwickBuild frame, one challenge we faced was to ensure there would be no lateral movement once the balcony was complete. Therefore, threaded bar and resin were used to fix anchor points into the property wall, which we then anchored the frame back to. The logistics for transporting over 6,000kg of materials to Alderney and getting our installation team over to the island, proved to be one of the biggest challenges we faced. Three ferry cancellations and a flight cancellation due to weather conditions resulted in some delays occurring. However, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our installers, the impact of this on the project was kept to a minimum and completion took five weeks in total. Special mention to our installer Nathan who genuinely took one for the team in

overcoming his fear of flying on several occasions. During this project, we have demonstrated the versatility of our integrated systems in creating a spectacular outdoor living area that can be enjoyed with little maintenance for many years to come. Our complete solution is setting new standards in the construction industry and we anticipate turning many more ideas into design and reality.

How To Make A Home Accessible – Without Compromising On Style Accessibility of the home is an important consideration in any building project. A home lift provides an easy and stylish solution for those who struggle with the stairs. Your typical self-build client will invest their heart and soul in their project to realise their dream home, so accessibility should be a major consideration to ensure the lifetime value of the project.

There are many considerations; from access into the house, the layout inside, the width of the hallways and doorways and of course, the stairs.

Incorporating a home lift into the original plans will give your clients the means to future proof their dream home, allowing them to stay put well into retirement and add value to their property. But how do you choose the perfect home lift for your project and your client’s needs? Space is an important consideration, and so is the design of the lift and its safety features. The Terry Lifestyle Home Lift is a space-saving, unobtrusive option which provides first-class safety features. Independently tested and certificated by a Fire Research Centre, the Lifestyle Home Lift provides the same fire integrity the house had before the aperture is cut – whether the lift is parked upstairs or downstairs. Designed and manufactured in Britain to the requirements of BS5900:2012, the Lifestyle Home Lift provides the best of comforts in living and is a design element your customer will be proud of.

Design criteria such as Lifetime Homes are growing in importance, helping to ensure that homes are fit for the less mobile.

As a result, Industville have worked with a variety of distinguished retail, leisure and hospitality companies

Archetech - Page 140

Industville have had the great pleasure on working on a number of fantastic projects over the past few years. One such example has been their continued relationship with Humble Grape, an independent wine merchants based in London. Humble Grape is an evolution of the traditional wine merchant, specialising in sourcing a wide variety of handcrafted wine from obscure and unknown vineyards across the globe the popularity of which has led them to open two London based wine bars. In their Battersea location, Humble Grape used a number of Industville fittings including the Brooklyn Vintage Antique Sconce Wall Lamp - Umbrella - Dark Pewter with a Copper Holder to line each wall and illuminating the elevated bar tables at the side of the ground floor bar area. The beautiful combination of Dark Pewter and Copper work wonderfully with both the cement wall and cork tiles which cover the walls adding a lovely warmth to the bar space. In addition, Humble Grape also chose to include two

designs from Industville’s vintage bar stool collection throughout the main bar area. Humble Grape subsequently have opened a second wine bar located in St Bride’s Passage. Again, they turned to Industville to provide the lighting, specifically the Orlando Vintage Balloon Pendant in Dark Pewter. An elegant cage pendant light that was also used to great effect in the original bar space and again works wonderfully here. Modified into cluster pendants they form gorgeous statement lighting pieces complimenting Humble Grape’s overall aesthetic providing the perfect laid back yet refined backdrop in which to enjoy their superb selection of wine and food options. Industville have recently moved to a larger office and warehouse in South East London. Conveniently located, this new space offers a custom-built showroom and will allow us to continue to grow and ensure that we can provide the highest levels of customer service, hold larger volumes of stock and offer fast, secure delivery to their clients

Dowsing & reynolDs We are an online, design-led lighting and hardware company specialising in products that you won’t find on the high street. James Dowsing-Reynolds, Founder and Director set up the business after sourcing vintage style light bulbs for a project he was working on. After buying a few too many, he decided to sell the spare bulbs on eBay. They sold fantastically well and before he knew it, a business was born. We’re very much about the industrial style with few Scandinavian influences thrown into the mix. Our varied range of beautiful and bespoke lighting products means you can buy or create your own lights to suit the interior you are designing. Recently we launched a range of hardware products that included toggle light switches, dimmers and plug sockets. James first set about designing the range after moving house and was unable to find any that he loved for his new home; struggling to source any that were well designed, different from the usual white plastic ones, but also affordable too. Affordability is often key, especially if you’re doing the whole interior, not just a socket or two. We are exhibiting at 100% Design this September, after the huge success of last year. Our stand will feature a range of products, including our lights and hardware. We will be continuing with last year’s key factors that made us so popular with both architects and Interior Designers, showcasing products with fantastic quality, great price and uniqueness. All key factors when sourcing items for interior projects. Due to the popularity of our ranges and customer feedback, we’ve recently added new products to our collection, including drawer knobs and door handles, spiral LED bulbs and a capsule paint collection. We have curated nine colours in three finishes which all go beautifully together.

light fittings to choose from; paintable front plates and a variety of accessories, the choice is almost limitless. Amazingly, the Levello system allows fittings to be uprated to IP65 after installation whilst the blank plate can hide unwanted luminaires.

Levello has been designed with minimal visual impact, to be discrete and invisible; as if that is not enough, we have developed a unique modular plug and play system that allows the lighting designer or end user to change the lighting scheme at will.

The flush front plate has options of powder coated or paintable finishes; the paintable being finished with the same paint as the ceiling, reinforcing the zero-sight line.

Levello’s patented fixing system is versatile, allowing the user to change a downlight, to a pendent, to a spotlight, to a device or even blank out the position completely. All this can be done in seconds. The Levello housing is permanently fitted into the ceiling and with over 30 different

Our products are based on the MR16 form factor which accepts standard 50mm diameter light sources such as GU10’s, MR16’s and high output Light Engines, giving the widest choice possible. All products are supplied with a connector kit which includes to make installation swift and easy. Enhanced visual effects can be achieved by

using Lenses, Louvres and Colour Filters in the; Low Profile, Deep PLUS and Directional PLUS ranges. A ‘darklight’ effect can easily be achieved by adding a baffle so that the glare and light spill is reduced, whilst a white baffle creates a uniform aperture, creating a softer lighting aesthetic which matches with any white ceiling. To achieve all the above, you only need to decide whether you want the housing to be fire rated or non-fire rated and the possibilities will be endless. How easy is that? miller KendricK have completed the bUild of their competition Winning entry for a of ‘pop-Up hotel’ cabin located at castell y bere, Wales.

the caBin, Known as ‘arthur’s cave’, was one of eight winning entries for the Epic Retreats - a partnership between holiday cottage from Best of Wales, tour operator Cambria Tours and George & Tomos Architects. The project was part funded by the Welsh Government’s Tourism Product Innovation Fund. The cabin will be featured as part of Channel 4’s ‘Cabins in the Wild with Dick Strawbridge’ documentary series. The construction of this cabin is due to air on 4th June. The design takes its inspiration from the ancient landscape of Wales but utilises modern construction techniques. The structure is a combination of CNC-cut birch plywood ribs and sheathing panels, which act together to form a composite structure. The structural ribs are comprised of either three or five individual sections of plywood, tightly fitted together using ‘jigsaw’ joints with a high degree of tolerance. As a single internal material, the plywood provides both structure, finish, fixtures and fittings including a plywood sink and bath. The faceted envelope is clad in locally- sourced Welsh larch boards stained black, with sheep’s wool insulation part- filling the cavity. Wherever possible the project has sought to use locally sourced materials. The sheep’s wool insulation is from Ty-Mwar. The green larch cladding is from Esgair Forest who’s saw mill is adjacent to the site in neighbouring village of Machynlleth.

built by EJ Ryder Ltd. who also assisted in the detailed design and provided expert knowledge of plywood construction and prefabrication techniques. The cabin was built with the Burford Farm Project in Shepton Mallet. The structural engineers were Momentum Engineering, London, and the cost consultant was PMP Consultants, Birmingham. Miller Kendrick Architects Ltd. is a new architectural practice based in London and the West Midlands. It was established in 2015 by Paul Miller and Michael Kendrick to explore innovative ways of working in architecture and to research new methods of construction.

The construction of the cabin took four weeks to complete. The build was managed and the structure is a combination of cnc-cut birch plywood ribs and sheathing panels.

The cabin is heated via a small log burner, has hot and cold water, LED lighting powered via photovoltaics and a self composting WC.

The material’s versatility provides architects with the ability to bring inspirational designs to life. COnStRuCtIng beauty EQUITONE materials are created in large, flat panels, which can be cut and fabricated into a variety of shapes and sizes, enabling an architect to add intricate detail to the facade and create striking patterns in the exterior design. EQUITONE’s fibre cement materials are available in a range of through colours, offering an extensive palette of subtle and inspiring shades in a variety of textures and finishes. lOOK anD feel

Although the overall look is important, the texture can make a big difference to the finish of a building too. EQUITONE materials are available in a range of finishes such as EQUITONE [linea], which is a great tool for architects who want to play with texture, light and shadow. Its unique 3D shape with routed lines gives a striking final effect, particularly when cut into unusual shapes. EQUITONE’s most recent addition to the range, EQUITONE [materia], accentuates the beauty of fibre cement. The material encompasses the characteristics of cement whereas the fibres render its surface textured yet velvety. The ever-changing atmosphere gives the material natural subtle shade variations. WORKIng WIth the enVIROnment Long lifespan is a key factor when specifying cladding materials – fibre cement has a life expectancy of over 50 years and, at the end of its life, can be crushed and recycled. It also requires low maintenance, and additional finishes available on select materials, such as anti-graffiti coating helps prevent weathering in areas of

heavy footfall or areas where the building has to withstand harsh elements. In addition to environmental benefits of the material itself, EQUITONE helps to improve the thermal efficiency of a building. When installed, the air gap at the back of the panel protects the inner skin of the main building, acting as a rainscreen. In the summer, the ventilated facade has a cooling effect when outside temperatures are high. The ventilation space allows air to freely circulate behind the panel, creating a comfortable inner building and enabling water vapour from inside the structure to escape. flexIbIlIty In fIxIngS Depending on an architect’s vision, EQUITONE can be fitted using secret fix when a smooth surface is required, or using a range of face fix systems to achieve the desired aesthetic. Commenting on the use of EQUITONE [tectiva] for a public-sector building, Ajay Chauhan, architect at CPMG said: “We’re really pleased with the overall finish of the project. EQUITONE [tectiva] was the ideal choice– it gave the aesthetic appearance we hoped for, was within budget and is fantastic quality.” For more information about EQUITONE, visit www.equitone.co.uk.

FIRE RESISTANCE STANDARDS AND MY DUTY TO DESIGN WITH APPROPRIATE SKILL AND CARE “What if I became aware that parts of the very building regulations I rely on are inadequate?” Today the UK Building Regulations, Approved Document B adopts the standard time temperature protocol of ISO834-1 / EN1363-1 in BS476 pts 20 to 24 for fire resistance testing of all building elements such as fire doors, fire stopping systems for penetrations, structural elements, fire walls and partitions, in fact every material, component and product used in a building that is required to have a fire resistance rating. What is often overlooked is that this time temperature protocol for fire resistance testing (ISO834-1 / EN1363-1 aka the standard time temperature curve), was developed almost 100 years ago when buildings and contents were commonly made of wood and fabric and when plastic or synthetic materials did not exist (1). Further, buildings of this age were mostly not very tall or very large. Today our built environment consists of both large and small buildings but critically is far more complex with super high rise and mega-interconnected transportation, retail, commercial structures with significant below ground environments. In these buildings we have a much larger range of evacuation times and where these egress times are very long, designers and engineers need to look for alternative more innovative solutions for evacuation or protection of occupants such as reducing fire loads, lift evacuation or protect in place refuges.

Archetech - Page 156

Recent research (2) has identified that in most modern buildings the use of light weight and polymeric building materials, plastic contents, synthetic foams and fabrics with high calorific values can significantly increase fire loads resulting in time temperature fire profiles significantly different and in cases well above the original parameters of the existing, early 1900’s test protocol as adopted in BS476 (ISO834-1 / EN 1363-1) and as mandated by the Building Regulations for fire resistant building elements. Underground environments can also exhibit very different fire profiles to those in above ground cellulosic environments (3) especially in confined underground public areas like road and rail tunnels, underground shopping centers, car parks where a high fire load is present. Fire temperatures in these areas can exhibit a very fast rise time and reach temperatures well above those in standard model above ground buildings. British Standard BS8519:2010 and BS EN12485 clearly recognise underground public areas such as car parks, loading bays and large basement storage as “Areas of Special Risk” with potential for fire temperatures to

1,200°C. In these environments more stringent requirements for fire resistance maybe needed. Worse still… Almost all Life Safety & Fire Fighting systems depend on the reliable function of electric cables during emergency. If these essential cables fail during a fire event, the critical equipment they enable also fails. This could mean that firemen’s lifts, fire sprinklers, hydrant pumps, smoke & heat extraction and pressurization fans, emergency communication, alarms and lighting systems stop working during evacuation putting occupants, emergency response workers and property at risk. It is therefore concerning that the only exception in the Building Regulations for fire resistance testing to BS476 pts 20-24 is for the very electric cables required to power all emergency life support and firefighting systems. This contradiction allows these essential cables to be tested to alternative flame tests which have little or no relevance to real building fires and at lower final temperatures than required for all other fire resistant elements of the building. This anomaly has occurred in the Building Regulations because the BSI cable testing standards adopted by the regulations for Protected Circuits allow this strange

exception. In looking to world’s best practice, it is interesting to note that other developed countries including America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand Germany and Belgium have for years, required testing of these essential cables to the same fire time temperature protocol as every other building element which is the same as used in BS476 pts 20-24 i.e. ISO 834-1 / EN 1363-1. Given most buildings rely on functional and reliable life safety and firefighting systems to protect life and property it would seem logical that these protected circuits should be tested to perform to at least the same standard as everything else because logically they will be in the same fire. It might be better if they were subject to even higher standards in order to ensure that the critical life safety and firefighting systems remain functional during evacuation (as is required in the USA and Canada). In light of recent major fire events in the UK and around the world, having British Standards years behind global best practice for electrical wiring systems enabling life safety and firefighting systems is unacceptable.

a ‘fit for purpose’ mandate, it remains necessary to exercise ‘reasonable skill and care’. Even if the builder and/or project owners inherit more liability under the Sale of Goods Act (5) due to implied terms that the goods and products supplied will be of satisfactory quality where a purchaser makes known a particular purpose (4), there remains both an ethical and prudent incentive for the contracted professional consultant to factor in the design any known limitations in regulation or standards. BRAC (Building Regulation Advisory Committee) is aware of the Protect Circuit testing anomaly and hopefully will address this in future revisions. 1. Replacement Balustrade

A great many character or period properties have stone balustrade incorporated into their design. These balustrades make a large visual impact, but they also have a practical purpose as barriers and screens.

INNOVATIVE NEW CONCRETE PRODUCT LAUNCHES IN THE UK

A common cause for the demise of a balustrade is the presence of water. Many original balustrades were made from artificial stonework such as Roman Cement, Concrete and Stucco. These were often reinforced with iron or mild steel bars which rust and expand when exposed to water over a long period.

the proJect explores the Ammani urban fabric and rethinks the conventional apartment building in search for a more meaningful approach to residential real-estate development that goes beyond the repetitive and bland. During the economic crisis Jordan is currently facing, a modern, simple, and economic design will flourish and give some life into the area. A solid void contrast on the facade of the building was chosen not only because it creates a statement but also does not compromise the interior uses, rather enhance them. The buildings around it try very subtle means to change their appearance using glass or bulkier stone pillars but neither really push the boundaries. It does so to the context without really adding an extra material or ornament, standing out from the rest of the buildings to break the uniformity that plagues the Jordanian scape. Adding some form of color to the scene also assists in breaking the standardization. This kind of reflection likewise aids in giving off a more direct, transparent feel. The black stone used offers enough similar texture when compared to the white that it is not an eyesore when looking at the building as a whole. The white solid part of the exterior compliments the interior as it shields the main bedroom from the sounds of the street and closes off the view to the inside. The bedrooms have windows on the sides of the building that look over the street from an angle so nothing is truly cut off. While on the contrary, the black void half lets light and scenery right into the living room. In addition, the sides of the building are fairly regular, making sure that it doesn’t become a thorn to the neighborhood instead of an interesting and dynamic addition.

The building comprises of five residential floors, ten apartments in total, each covering 150m2, the average space required for Jordanian families. It boasts in giving a satisfying, affordable, modern living condition for regular families. Both simple and complex furniture can be used within, according the needs and idiosyncrasies of the families moving into it. Whatever within, the black window will offer a nice frame to the setting.

Until now, installing a lift into your property would have been a hugely difficult and expensive process. It would have required a lift shaft being built, a pit that needed excavating and a machine room being installed. However, with the revolutionary ‘Newmatic Elevator’, these costly procedures are a thing of the past.

Guttercare UK Ltd are specialists in Metal Rainwater Systems & Architectural Aluminium Copings, Flashings & Fascia Soffit Systems.

Taking up relatively little space, this lift works using simple physics with the air pressure difference above and beneath the cabin transporting you to where you want to go. Safety, of course, is paramount and with the elevators multi-locking mechanisms, it is widely regarded as the safest on the market, with low maintenance costs too. A service visit is required only once a year. +44 (0)1494 478840 info@newmaticelevators.com

SketchUp 2017 is here! The smartest SketchUp yet.

Transparency

Graphics Pipeline 2.0

We’ve made big improvement to transparency, which should now render faster and at high quality to. SketchUp is also now much better at displaying multiple transparencies to provide a more realistic sense of depth across several see-through faces.

In this release, we’ve made major improvements to our graphics pipeline, allowing for performance improvements. Now, SketchUp, 3D Warehouse, LayOut, My SketchUp, and Trimble Connect all render models using the same under-the-hood algorithms – all tuned for buttery 3D orbiting.

High DPI Modeling

There’s more!

We’ve tuned snapping and inferencing for high definition monitors (like Apple’s Retina Display). Edge weights have also been smart-scaled. You can back away from your screen now...

Perpendicular Face Inferencing Have you mastered parallel inferencing? We’ve added a ‘Perpendicular to Face’ inference. Hover a face; SketchUp will helpfully snap to its perpendicular.

• Smart Offset

• High Fidelity .DWG – for easier exporting

• LayOut Tables; manage spreadsheets in LayOut

• Extension Manager
