Designs identified hotel and residential accommodation supported by significant cultural, leisure, restaurant and retail uses, as well as new landscaped public spaces at the centre of the development and pedestrian connections which visually and physically link Tower Bridge with Tooley Street. Defining the edge of Potters Fields Park is Cambridge House, a low horizontal building clad in strips of Catalan Gris limestone, with a double height ground floor accessing the 6,870m2 cultural space for the London Theatre Company. Sharing the same palette and set within a central landscaped courtyard is The Tower, a 20 storey slender ‘campanile’ offering one apartment per floor, topped by a glazed garden terrace. The Catalan Gris stone is offset with finely detailed bronze anodised windows and chamfered recesses.

Three apartment blocks with projecting stone balconies are positioned between landscaped gardens at the centre of the development. Two further buildings step down in scale towards Tower Bridge Road, constructed from London stock brick to relate to the adjacent Shad Thames. Interest is added with handset basketweave brickwork and a series of projecting timber balconies. A new pedestrian route, Duchess Walk, has been created to maximise views through the site from Tooley Street to th esouth tower of Tower Bridge. This street is animated by shops, cafes as well as a spa and gymnasium.

“The importance of the right lighting for the working environment cannot be underestimated. You can bring the benefits of natural light to your work or home and make the space as personal as you are.”

The impact of light Although we may not realise it, light has a significant influence on many processes inside our bodies. It regulates the production of various hormones, for example, the sleep hormone melatonin, which ensures that we relax in the evening and ideally fall into a refreshing sleep. But what about those among us who spend much of their time indoors, particularly when at work, and don’t receive enough exposure to natural light? By simulating day light, LUCTRA® by DURABLE provides a revolutionary solution.

Archetech - Page 16

Brightness alone is not enough Illumination and the quality of light are vital for employees, especially in an office environment. There are several statutory regulations for workplace lighting. Here, flexible office concepts present the greatest challenge. Both the DIN EN 12464-1 and the ASR 3.4 standards lay down the requirements for an office workplace. They state that workplaces should be illuminated with a minimum of 500 lux with particularly demanding visual tasks requiring up to 750 lux. However, a survey revealed that more than 60% of employees prefer light intensities of at least 800 lux. Employees are also more content, and see themselves as having a higher level of well-being when they can adjust the lighting to their individual preferences. This includes the light intensity as well as the variable colour

temperature – the alternation between neutral (cold white) and warmer (warm white) light. LUCTRA® lamps deliver light intensities of 1,000 lux and a colour spectrum ranging from 2,700 to 6,500 Kelvin. The VITACORE® electronics and VITACORE® APP make it very easy to use and control these functions. A personalised 24-hour lighting sequence can be programmed by answering five simple questions to automatically vary the colour and intensity of light to simulate natural light through the course of the day. Bluetooth technology allows the lamps to be controlled from a 10-metre distance and two integrated USB connections enable charging of mobile devices without affecting the life of the LEDs. “The importance of the right lighting for the working environment cannot be underestimated,” comments Sean Starkey, Managing Director at DURABLE UK. “You can bring the benefits of natural light to your work or home and make the space as personal as you are. LUCTRA® provides an incredibly wide colour spectrum, and intense brightness, offering outstanding customisation and total flexibility. Its ability to be easily adjusted means it is the ideal task lighting choice for anybody, at any time of day and a truly unique lighting solution.” www.luctra.co.uk

PERFECT DAY LIGHT The table lamp LUCTRA®® TABLE PRO stimulates well-being with innovative, biologically effective light. Like the natural course of the day LUCTRA®® changes the light colour – individually and automatically.

Modern Masonry Alliance – increased capacity to deliver more housing Concrete block, aircrete, brick and concrete roof tile manufacturers are now investing in the future. The country needs more housing, and concrete manufacturers are increasing production capacities. The Modern Masonry Alliance response to the government housing white paper makes the case for the performance benefits of masonry construction and the capacity of the industry to deliver. Manufacturers are reporting a doubling of block output to meet the forecast increase in housing starts and that spare capacity remains in the system. Throughout the UK there was significant investment in 2016, and there has been further investment in 2017. This is in the form of replacement of old plant to increase production rates or new additional production lines. Members also continue to extend working hours and bring mothballed production lines into operation to meet increasing demand, and they report that further spare capacity can be brought online as and when demand increases further. Where is investment increasing?

Archetech - Page 26

Tarmac’s Building Products division is increasing its Durox aerated block manufacturing capacity. It is well positioned to continue to meet high customer demand for quality block products. The second of two existing factories in Essex, is due to open late this year. Thomas Armstrong is another company increasing block production with a new plant in Leeds. This latest factory development advocates the government’s aims of creating a Northern Powerhouse, addressing the issues of an unbalanced economy.

Besblock is also working to accommodate the increased housing demand. The firm, formed in 1972 announced in 2016 an investment of £1m including further plans to invest in technology and environmentally friendly vehicles. And it is not only blocks, but bricks as well. Ibstock is boosting capacity having recently invested £54 million into a new factory.

This move will increase the production of bricks to deliver an extra 15,000 homes annually from the end of 2017. And finally, investing nearly £8 million to expand capacity at its Leighton Buzzard factory, Forticrete is increasing the volume and quality of concrete roofing materials. The company’s bespoke new tile line has been purpose built, to produce two brand new large format tiles which will deliver cost and time savings.

With the government’s pledge to build one million houses before 2020, the efforts already made by UK block, aircrete, brick and concrete roof tile manufacturers are a step in the right direction in meeting this ambitious target. Skills Masonry construction, even with a 50% increase in housing starts in the last 6 years, still represents the vast majority of housing being built. This is testament to a large and widely spread resource of skilled operatives. These skills are well known so that projects can be delivered with a high level of performance. With the dynamic nature of the construction industry, skills shortages are often reported across all parts of the industry including office based professionals and site operatives. The ubiquitous nature of the brick laying skill makes it as responsive as any of the construction skills we need.

Homes with High Performance High performance housing exceeds regulations and standards across a range of performance parameters. This housing can be built using locally available masonry. The inherent properties of aggregate and concrete blocks make it easy for designers to achieve required outcomes for their housing projects. These include: •

Non combustible

Good thermal properties

Durable

Robust

Inert

Rot resistant

Good acoustic properties

Moisture resistant

Masonry products are local, low carbon and long lasting. The inherent properties of the product give whole life performance that enables designers to deliver homes with benefits to occupants and owners: •

Low fire risk – Masonry materials are noncombustible and do not allow the spread of fire, unlike some other forms of construction.

Energy saving – The insulation, air tightness and thermal mass of masonry homes, particularly when combined with concrete floors, can result in low energy bills. Long life – Meaning homes retain their value for future generations. A valuable investment.

Quiet – Aircrete and aggregate concrete blocks are included in 34 registered Robust Details for separating walls, which exceed minimum noise performance requirements. Upper floors of concrete provide exceptional internal sound insulation.

Secure – in high risk areas and for attached housing, solidity of masonry provides increased security. Comfortable – A home needs to be solidly built

to more expensive solutions. Their use can also help avoid the need for renewables.

Flood resilience – Homes built from aircrete and concrete blocks suffer less damage because they are robust, dimensionally stable and do not rot in the event of flooding.

In mitigating the risk of fire, a sensible starting point is choosing non-combustible structural materials – and masonry is one of these. Data has been published by The Department of Communities and Local Government showing statistical analysis of fires in completed timber buildings.

Thermal bridging Achieving required or desired energy performance arises from good design and construction in the following areas: U-values, air tightness and thermal bridging at junctions. Thermal bridging is not a new issue or concept, but as the U-values of walls and floors has improved and airtightness has increased, the percentage of lost energy that passes through thermal bridges has increased. Therefore it has become increasingly important to attend to thermal bridges – and for SAP assessors to sharpen their pencil and not use default values. For masonry construction, design help is available through a suite of details for which psi values* have been calculated. Clients and architects should require SAP assessors to use these more accurate psi values associated with the actual details rather than default values in SAP. Use of these details goes a long way to helping optimise fabric performance. By having details with the associated psi values, compliance can be demonstrated without recourse

Fire resilience during construction and on completion

“Fires in dwellings of timber framed construction experienced on average more damage than those of no special construction” (Stephen Williams, MP, Minister Communities and Local Government. House of Commons January 22, 2015) The results aren’t surprising – timber buildings are more susceptible to fire spread than masonry buildings are. During the construction stage of a building project, choosing the right materials is essential in mitigating any fire risk. Whilst proper design is essential, the structural material chosen is incredibly important; noncombustible masonry blocks are a great starting point. The HSE has previously raised concerns of poor management in reducing the risk of fire in timber buildings. There has been unease that the necessary procedures are not being followed, further increasing the risk of harm to occupants of neighbouring buildings. “All those making design and procurement decisions that

significantly affect fire risk should consider and reduce the risk and consequences of fire during the construction phase through DESIGN.” (HSE Open Letter October 2014) The masonry industry suggest that whilst proper design is required no matter what structural material is chosen and whilst workmanship is always important, a sensible starting point in risk mitigation is to choose non-combustible structural materials. Whilst the benefits of masonry during the construction phase are apparent, on completion the reduced risks from fire remain. With the inability of the product to burn, masonry homes offer a long life solution. By choosing masonry over timber or other materials, builders reduce the risk of fire related hazards.

The masonry industry has made a huge response to the increased activity in the housing sector, and by watching demand for products it continues to deliver energy efficient, fire resilient homes with excellent food resilience and acoustic performance. For more information visit www.modernmasonry.co.uk *A psi value is the measure of energy lost at a junction.

with no vibration issues, good with noise separation from family, housemates and neighbours; as well as being warm in winter and cool in summer. Masonry homes deliver this comfort.

Monitor Audio marries audio valour with

visual discretion CF230 belies compact dimensions to deliver party-capable audio Monitor Audio reveals the CF230, its most visually discreet architectural speaker system. A truly comprehensive offering for the home technology sector, the new speaker is also the British loudspeaker manufacturer’s most flexible device, providing an abundance of design possibilities for integrators, architects and designers to work with. 1. Installing into a new ceiling In a pre-construction, flush fit setting, the result is a seamless appearance with no shadow-creating edges, and one which becomes even more discreet when the grille is painted to match the ceiling colour. The finished result is quickly achieved, thanks to the CF230’s carefully developed, patent pending pre-construction kit, which includes a more conventional pre-construction bracket. The bracket enables the cut-out hole to be cut after the plasterboard is fitted. Once the plaster is dry, integrators just need to sand back the area.

Archetech - Page 28

2. Installing into an existing ceiling Fitting the CF230 into an existing construction, or where minimal

disruption to the building is a mandatory requirement, is straightforward. The CFB3-KIT retrofit installation kit offers both round and square grilles, allowing the customer to decide on the shape at the final stage. The flexible bracket fits in a hole smaller than the bracket area, and provides a firm fixing behind the plasterboard/Sheetrock, complete with precise machine screw fixing points for the driver. This ingenious retrofit bracket is unique to Monitor Audio. www.monitoraudio.com

Homes that people want to live in. Homes that last. Masonry homes provide superior performance benefits, both in construction and in use.

Energy saving The thermal performance of concrete and masonry homes can provide homeowners with the lowest energy bills because of the superior insulation, airtightness and thermal mass.

Long life Purchasing a home is a major investment and the inherent performance of concrete and masonry provides robust and secure homes that will last for many generations.

Low fire risk Concrete and masonry are non-combustible protecting life and property safety for occupants. During construction, these properties also protect the developer and surrounding community from spread of flame.

Quiet Masonry walls can support precast floors which do not squeak: 48% of homeowner noise issues raised with NHBC for detached homes were creaking floors (NHBC Foundation Report NF56).

Flood resilient Homes built from concrete and masonry suffer less damage because they are robust, dimensionally stable and do not rot.

Designed for Barratt London, the impressive development sits on one of the last remaining riverfront sites in the London Borough of Wandsworth, south London.

Award-winning architect, Patel Taylor, reveals its latest contribution to London’s riverscape, Lombard Wharf. Designed for Barratt London, the impressive development sits on one of the last remaining riverfront sites in the London Borough of Wandsworth, south London. The building, with a distinctive tear-drop shaped plan, appears to twist as it rises, thanks to subtle changes in the positioning of the white precast-concrete balconies. This creates a kinetic appearance which belies the use of repeating modules, giving the impression that the freestanding structure is carved out of stone. Lombard Wharf is located on York Way, neighboring smart Battersea Square. The 28-story building comprises 134 one, two, and three-bedroom homes, alongside a newly planned footbridge and part of the Thames path. By creating an elegantly unusual form and opening up the surrounding area and public realm through an imaginative approach to landscape, the development has been

praised by Wandsworth Council for its flattering and unique design. Unlike most riverside developments, Lombard Wharf does not have a discernible front or back. ‘Riverfront buildings have a propensity to face the water’, said Pankaj Patel, director at Patel Taylor. ‘We wanted Lombard Wharf to look equally attractive from every viewpoint, acting as a marker on the river whilst not turning its back onto the city.’

By giving the building a curved form, Patel Taylor has grounded it in its site, creating a sense of place. This is enhanced by the opening up of two adjacent railway arches, also part of the Patel Taylor scheme, one of them containing a workshop space and the other a pedestrian footpath, linking two sides of the railway line. “The creation of a new public plaza is at the heart of our vision, opening up a link from west to east.” said Pankaj, adding, “The dynamic form of the building grows from this public space, with a sculpted form twisting upwards to give panoramic views to all homes. The shape relates equally to landward and riverside vistas, becoming a legible marker to the proposed pedestrian footbridge northwards to Imperial Wharf and the focus at the threshold of this new London link.”

Archetech - Page 32

The wraparound balconies are ingeniously designed to rotate by two degrees maximising views from the residences. From a distance, they dominate the appearance of the building, creating a dynamic yet monolithic sculptural form signaling a point of significance in the landscape. At night, the building’s balcony fronts are lit with LED lighting, tracing its shape in the skyline. Ed McCoy,

sales director of Barratt London, commented: “The distinctive and graceful design of the building, its location, and its proximity to Clapham Junction have made Lombard Wharf a popular choice for buyers looking to move into or invest in Battersea. The building is a great addition to this area of the riverside.

WPP Hamburg’s new workspace strategy BDG architecture + design complete

As one of the largest shipping ports in Europe, Hamburg has long been established as a leading transport hub, when WPP took the decision to co-locate its agencies and media companies into a new city central workspace the intention was to establish their presence as a leading creative hub.

Archetech - Page 34

BDG architecture + design was appointed to undertake the strategy, concept and developed design for the new WPP Hamburg collocated space accommodating over 850 people, which was then delivered in partnership with a local architect and developer. BDG worked closely with all WPP companies in Hamburg, evaluating their requirements in order to develop the strategic architectural brief. This included utilisation and accommodation analysis, observational studies and senior level workshops, results of which defined and formed the workplace strategy for a consolidated working environment. Colin Macgadie, Chief Creative Officer at BDG architecture + design, comments:

BDG architecture + design is an international architecture and design consultancy focusing on strategy, architecture and design for corporate, public sector and education clients for new build, refurbishment and heritage projects. “The new workplace has been designed to facilitate WPP Hamburg’s role as a fulcrum in global business, as well as emphasising their deeply rooted position in the German and Hamburg markets. Bringing these groups of people together in an inspirational space that allows them to communicate and work in new and exciting ways, forging new relationships between individuals, businesses, clients and the local community. It’s a journey from the present to the future, with one eye on the past.”

Schlüter Specification Insight: Minimising build-up in the Manor Images: Copyright of Adare Manor

Schlüter-Systems used its specialist technical knowledge and a number of key product solutions to minimise floor build-up and guarantee complete waterproofing provision in the refurbishment of one of Ireland’s most magnificent country houses.

Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT matting is only 5.5mm thick and was laid onto a 1mm bed of flexible adhesive, giving build-up of just 6.5mm. As opposed to needing a layer of encapsulation above it, the system features studded matting and the cable clips securely within it, avoiding the need for tape or adhesive and enabling even spacing.

Project Overview Set in 840 acres of grounds, Adare Manor has been the subject of an 18-month-long renovation—its most extensive in 25 years. 40 new bedrooms have been added to this 19th century neo-gothic masterpiece as well as a host of new facilities; including a swimming pool, boardroom, cinema, spa and 350-capacity ballroom. Company Involvement Stone was extensively specified as part of the project. Schlüter-Systems was initially engaged to provide a waterproofing solution for Adare Manor, but was eventually able to assist on a greater scale. Insight AREA: Bedrooms and Bathrooms (Floors)

Archetech - Page 40

ACTION: Minimising height for uncoupling, underfloor heating and waterproofing Through use of multi-functional products, Schlüter was able to put forward a single-source solution that reduced build-up from ten layers to six and saved 19mm of height, as well as eliminating the need for smoothing compound. The floor build-up was approved by lead architect, ReardonSmith, and main contractor, John Paul Construction. Underfloor heating, uncoupling and waterproofing – four layers to one Underfloor heating, uncoupling and waterproofing provision was simplified from four layers to one, using the electric underfloor heating system, Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E.

Acoustic matting – a slimline variant Schlüter assisted by exchanging the proposed matting of 10mm thickness for Schlüter®-DITRA-SOUND matting of only 3.5mm thickness, saving 65% of build-up for acoustic reduction measures. This matting offered the same dB rating and could be installed using a standard polymer modified adhesive. AREA: Bathrooms/Golf Clubhouse, including Spa (Walls) ACTION: Providing guaranteed waterproofing For areas of high moisture, waterproofing is an essential consideration and it takes on an even greater significance when it comes to preserving historic buildings—Adare Manor has stood for 185 years and the intent of the restoration is to see it through at least the same again. A secure waterproofing system Schlüter’s complete waterproofing system for these areas consisted of Schlüter®-KERDI-200 waterproofing membrane, KERDI-KEBA sealing band and KERDI-COLL-L adhesive. These products work together to form a CE Marked waterproof solution that will stand the test of time. As well as the above solutions, Schlüter-Systems also provided its original uncoupling mat, Schlüter®-DITRA-25, for use under the flooring of Adare Manor’s new ballroom and its golf clubhouse and spa. The company is proud to have been specified on such a scale for this prestigious project. A world of innovation for a world of change Celebrating an impressive 32 years, kbb Birmingham, the UK’s largest and most established kitchen, bedroom and bathroom event, returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 4th – 7th March 2018. Following the success of last year’s theme, Future, kbb continues to forecast forthcoming trends and challenges facing the UK kbb community, identified by content partner, AMA research. Bringing you a world of innovation for a world of change. The four trends are: 1. Society: Evolving customer behaviours alter the meaning of lifestyle design, e.g. DIY conscious early adopters outsource cutting edge design and smart space innovations fuelling the installer skills shortage

Archetech - Page 42

2. Smart technology: Be it future or fad, ‘smart’ is creating new possibilities for those on both sides of the debate, e.g. virtual reality transforms showroom buying behaviours and voice recognition modifies our use of space 3. Disruption as opportunity: ‘Disruptors’ change the construction landscape, heralding new design opportunities, e.g. uncertainty surrounding Brexit stimulates house price stagnation driving a growing refurbishment market fuelled by mature, equity-rich homeowners undertaking big ticket kitchen and bathroom projects 4. Materiality: UK consumers demand higher quality products and materials, e.g. worktops continue to dominate the kitchen furniture market driving innovation and diversification in the surfaces sector

The Innovation Awards, in partnership with blum, aim to discover brands that are producing products, methods and ideas to help shape the future of the industry. The award entries will be judged by an esteemed panel of judges including kbb’s Brand Director, Joel Butler - winners will be announced at the show. This year’s kbb Retail and Design conference will provide practical advice to grow businesses in a world of change. Combining topics such as; How to... survive a recession and come out stronger, How to… design the 4G bathroom, How to… keep up with the latest materials and colours, plus much more. Kbb Birmingham 2018 sees the return of great British companies along with new international exhibitors including, Smeg, Sensio, Perrin & Rowe, Villeroy & Boch, Crosswater, Karonia, Caple, Franke, Nolte, Blanco, Samsung, Dansani and Blum. Brand Director at kbb, Joel Butler commented, “I’m really looking forward to another successful year at kbb Birmingham, and particularly how the community will explore and learn from this year’s theme. We’re welcoming a range of new and returning exhibitors, all of which will showcase a high calibre of products, methods and ideas. I would recommend visitors try and spend more than one day at the show.” Join the conversation with 16,000 industry buyers. Visit www.kbb.co.uk for further information.

Conversation with Anna Piotrowska from Green Home Design from Poland Q: Where the idea for those beautiful products came from? A: As it was when I was a child, and now as an artist and designer, finding the many joys within a beautiful design is the best pleasure. I’ve dreamed about creating the timeless product, that will serve and joy over the generations. As I observed that the wood elements have become quite popular to use for the kitchen and bathroom interior designs, I decided immediately that I would like to contribute this trend. Currently, handcrafted wooden taps and mixers are the joy of my work.

Q: Please, could you explain your company mission and philosophy? Our philosophy is delivered through our products, products that possess both a functional beauty and superb technical performances for a lifetime. These products are all our original and unique designs, that go through stringent testing and development to bring you peace of mind for all our products' long lifetime. Our products are handcrafted from only selected high-quality woods such as European oak, Black walnut, African mahogany – sapele. These woods are chosen for their immaculate aesthetic and their durability. Both are equally important.

Q: How is the wood waterproofed? The wood is selected for its dense structure, colour and orientation of the wood grain to provide both uniqueness and aesthetic quality for the final product. Before the manufacturing process, the wood is subjected to specialised, longduration drying techniques to ensure the durability of the product. This also ensures the product retains its shape, is durable and resists deformation, even after many years of use. Then through using a unique impregnation process and technologies modified from techniques in yacht-building engineering, our wood is fully protected against water. The finished products are covered with a bio-resistant, waterproof and safe multi-layer varnish coat. It is easy to clean and perfectly highlights the natural beauty of the wood.

Archetech - Page 44

How do you clean the taps? The wooden components will only require a gentle cleaning with soap and water on a soft cloth or sponge. Where lime scale may gather on the chrome base of the tap unit, there are many soft brushes and cleaning solutions available to deal with limescale on the metal components.

We offer 5 years standard manufacturer warranty that applies to all our taps and mixers.

MYAA Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies

Photo credits: MYAA & Qatar Foundation

The Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), is located on the Education City Campus, Doha. The scheme provides world class teaching and faculty space and the Education City campus mosque. FIS is based on the Islamic ‘Kulliyya’ or ‘place where all knowledge is sought’ and the building provides a progressive learning environment which places the institution at the forefront of contemporary Islamic pedagogy countering the pejorative image of Islamic education.

Archetech - Page 54

The Kulliyya implies that knowledge and faith are interwoven but that all knowledge ultimately comes from faith. This relationship is explored in QFIS through the infinite spiral building plan and multiple routes that bind faculty to mosque. Uniquely for the Muslim World, the scheme gives male and female students parity by providing co-educational, non-hierarchical space where men and women have equal consideration. The layout places the large volume of the mosque at one end, with the library, classrooms and faculty offices in the middle, culminating with two 90m high minarets symbolizing ¨knowledge and light¨. The mosque is lifted by the ‘five pillars of Islam’ inscribed with Qur´anic verse referring to Hajj, Fasting, Charity, Prayer and Belief and the pillars provide a cool undercroft leading to the student entrance.

Teaching accommodation is both formal and informal while including the use of corridors, lounges, and learning in the landscaped Islamic garden. The faculty is symbolically separated from the mosque by a four story ablution cascade wrapped around an undulating stair acting as point of meditative calm before entry into the scared space of the mosque. The scheme is intrinsically sustainable; the large south facing mosque self-shades the scheme. The undercroft is a tempered shaded space. Classroom are provided with cool courtyards and the ceramic cladding reduces solar heat whilst permitting natural light. Elevations incorporate a two skin modulated façade that changes around the buildings to mitigate solar radiation. The Islamic garden creates microclimates enabling outdoor learning for nearly 5 months in a year. Native planting uses little water and is irrigated using grey water from the mosque ablution. QFIS has rapidly become a focal point not only for students but for the wider community, enabling the building to break down barriers of class and social-status. In a troubled world, QFIS suggests that an Islamic space can be contemporary, progressive and inclusive but, above all, can act as a beacon of hope in opposition to nihilistic conflict that has gripped the Middle East region.

Plot # 1282 www.ievasaudargaite.com & Bahaa Ghoussainy

The zone in which our project is located is not presently considered residential. The project’s program consists of 95 industrial lofts with surfaces ranging from 100 square meters to 650 square meters on a total built up area of 25,800 square meters.

Plot # 1282 is a residential project located on the northern periphery of Beirut at the proximity of one the city’s abandoned and unused railway terminal, military barracks, leftovers of agricultural land and a 30‐meter wide highway. The zone in which our project is located is not presently considered residential. The project’s program consists of 95 industrial lofts with surfaces ranging from 100 square meters to 650 square meters on a total built‐up area of 25,800 square meters.

Archetech - Page 62

The floor slabs are organized around nine exposed cores, each core feeding a maximum of two apartments per floor. The proposed lofts feature high ceilings (5.3 meters) with open space plans and minimal interior partitioning. With a surface area of 5,400 square meters, the site perimeter is 430 meters of which less than 12 meters are facing a public access road. This implies that 97% of the site periphery faces parcels on which buildings could be erected at some point in the future. In its present state, the site enjoys unobstructed panoramic views on all orientations through the totality of the perimeter of the plot. As a result of that, all proposed loft spaces enjoy full transparency of their facades with openings that span from floor to ceiling on all exterior elevations. In an unforeseeable future, as the surrounding plots get built, and with the gradual densification of the immediate environment, the full apertures of our facades will face unpredictable situations that our project’s morphology responds to by its continuous setback on the totality of the perimeter of the site and the gradual recess of the floor plates. This gesture should guarantee generous breathing corridors along all the site’s peripheral limits for our project and the future buildings of the surroundings.

In many sectors along the periphery of Beirut, relatively high exploitation factors are applied on zones that are still undeveloped. In the absence of a master plan, the rapid gentrification of these sectors has led to catastrophic urban conditions. In most cases, the general guidelines of the very complex and archaic municipal building laws are the only leading rule and reference on which developers build their schemes. In such situations, it is becoming increasingly difficult to define the integration of a project and its relationship in the long term with the neighboring sites. Our proposal for Plot # 1282 does not only celebrate the present state of its environment, the absence of buildings and the scarceness of the urban fabric on which it sits, it also anticipates the future expansion of its surroundings and its rapport with the unpredictable conditions that will be implied by the development of the sector.

customer with the best solution for their requirements. Aluminium systems from Reynaers

Frame iconic views at One Tower Bridge Reynaers’ aluminium glazing systems have been applied across five of the nine apartment blocks, selected for their ability to meet the look, feel and quality required by the architects at Squire and Partners. More than 300 sliding doors from leading aluminium systems company Reynaers have been installed at Berkeley Homes’ development at the foot of London’s landmark Tower Bridge.

developed especially for this project.

One Tower Bridge sits on the Thames riverfront, overlooking the Tower of London, the Cheesegrater, the Gherkin and City Hall. The development spans 80,000 feet of retail, leisure and cultural space as well as housing over 400 luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments.

Most apartments boast balconies or terraces, which are completed with a total of more than 300 large CP 130 and CP 155 lift-andslide doors. Three-chamber CS 68 and CS 77 windows and doors were also installed throughout the development.

Nine apartment blocks form the structure of One Tower Bridge, offering residents a vast swimming pool and luxury spa, as well as a state-of-the-art gymnasium, business lounge and virtual golf facility. With wide pedestrian boulevards that take visitors through landscaped communal gardens, retail outlets and restaurants, the development is at once a self-contained community and a wellconnected location in the very heart of London.

Curtain walling systems were supplied by Reynaers for One Tower Bridge, which comprise of extensive runs of CW 60 and CW 50 uncapped curtain walling. Bespoke solutions for a non-90 degree open-corner patio and a 2-track running into a 3-track patio were

“The build also required a design that looked spectacular, complementing the high-specification décor of the apartments and offering unparalleled views of its enviable location. The systems chosen allow residents to have panoramic views over London, without compromising on insulation or ease of operation.” Already recognised by Sunday Times British Homes Awards 2015 as Best Interior Design and Large Development of the Year, the development has now been completed alongside planning consultant Barton Willmore, structural engineer Meinhardt and fabricators M Price Limited, Prater Ltd and Scheldebouw. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “One Tower Bridge demanded a superior suite of products that would provide excellent acoustic performance given its bustling location, as well as market-leading security and weather performance given the height of the apartment blocks.

The 22,000m2 Canaletto residential tower in London employs the concept of clustering several floors together to establish a group of ‘vertical communities’.

Canaletto Residential Tower UNStudio www.unstudio.com

Offering waterside living, the 31-storey tower comprises studios, one and two-bedroom apartments, a variety of three bedrooms and one distinct penthouse with a full rooftop. Canaletto also includes shared amenities such as a swimming pool, health club, media room and resident’s club lounge with a terrace on the 24th floor UNStudio’s design for the tower, which is located in the London borough of Islington, incorporates the remodeling of the facade, a streamlining of the building’s mass and a contrasting of scale and detail untypical of a residential tower. The facade for the Canaletto tower was designed to emphasise its residential character and to define a distinct ‘Islington’ response. Ben van Berkel: “The City Road Tower distinguishes itself from buildings in the nearby financial district of the City through variation; through materials, through clusters, through a scale that is appropriate to city streets and through a facade that creates its own residential identity by means of a varied and heterogeneous elevation.”

Photo Info : Hufton + Crow www.huftonandcrow.com Eva Bloem www.evabloem.com

Ben van Berkel: ‘In a residential building, we want residents to really feel like they are part of a unique work of architecture, something that is identifiably theirs. This is why the design of Canaletto really emphasises this clustering of different floors – small communities that are visibly unique from other nearby towers.”

Page 71 - Archetech

In the design near and distant townscape views are enhanced through scale, detail, and material variation. The proposed building facade creates a modeled elevation in which clusters of adjacent floors are grouped together.

Contrasting materials are employed within each grouping, where the ‘outer’ smooth metallic element is complemented by an ‘inner’ use of textured materials. Throughout the building the cluster concept of the facade is designed to maximise levels of transparency and frame the views towards the sky, thereby lending the tower a softer and more nuanced silhouette.

Archetech - Page 72

The elevation additionally offers sustainability benefits. The surface modelling creates opportunities for shading, balancing good internal daylight and views with reduced heat gains. The articulation of the facade will additionally reduce wind down drafts and, in combination with canopy proposals at the base of the building, provide an improved pedestrian microclimate. The modelling of the balconies within each grouped cluster lends variability to the facade and the living experience for the residents in the building. As outdoor spaces play a large role in the enjoyment of living environments, the creation of unique, sheltered spaces of high quality was a driver in early design development. The aspect of using both textured and smooth materials contrasts with the expected contemporariness of a typical highrise metal construction and lends this facade a residential ‘twist.’ Ben van Berkel: “The detailing and contrasting of the materialisation of the façade and the balconies plays a key role in the identity of the building and is in fact borrowed from furniture design. This is an approach which we more typically apply to designs for small-

As outdoor spaces play a large role in the enjoyment of living environments, the creation of unique, sheltered spaces of high quality was a driver in early design developmen er private houses, however following extensive research into the potential for extending durability and maintenance we were able to create unexpected material variations on a larger scale.” Outside of the privacy afforded by the 190 individual living units, the Canaletto tower caters for a variety of collective leisure activities by way of shared amenities where the residents can enjoy healthy leisure pursuits or relax in areas designed for gathering and socialising. A landscaped garden on Wharf Road provides access to the residential lobby, whilst the ground floor garden frames the entrance lobby and provides a green oasis off the busy City Road. A public restaurant will also be located at the base of the building on City Road

Drexus Pave Drain Set to Change the Face of Landscape Design Drainage has long been considered a purely functional element of any design. So much so that it’s often something landscape architects try to hide to ensure it doesn’t detract from the overall look and feel of the space. Essentially drainage is viewed as a necessary evil, with functional grated systems being the traditional go-to solution. But that’s all now set to change. In a huge leap forward for the industry, landscape architects no longer need worry about how to incorporate drainage or conceal it from view. In fact, there’s now a reason to actively embrace it. Marshalls, the UK’s leading hard landscaping provider, now supplies drainage that blends with concrete paving and natural stone products. With Drexus Pave Drain, Marshalls can provide a discreet natural stone topped drainage solution in the exact same material as the paving that surrounds it. This means the drainage can either blend into the landscape to effectively hide it, or be contrasted to offer some form of delineation to frame a public space and create a design feature. Delineation In busy, multi-use spaces which require demarcation, Pave Drain can be used as an effective delineator to distinguish between pedestrian, vehicular and cycle areas instead of a prominent kerb or edging. A line of drainage can also be supplied in a contrasting colour to be used as a border around a public space. As the product can now be rendered in the same texture and material, it no longer looks unsightly but instead functions as a design feature in its own right. At a time when living space is at a premium and keeps having to work harder, Drexus Pave Drain can provide subtle yet effective demarcation, creating the sort of zoning that allows great public areas to do all that’s increasingly being asked of them.

Archetech - Page 74

Blending Where a landscape architect still wants to hide the drainage, thanks to Pave Drain it can now be created in the same material and colour as the surrounding paving – allowing it to be subtly integrated into the paving design. Marshalls’ Drexus Pave Drain provides the perfect solution, offering a unique aesthetic for linear drainage. Utilising Marshalls’

The unique ability of Marshalls’ Drexus Pave Drain to sympathetically blend drainage into a scheme, or use it to provide subtle but effective demarcation, means it has the potential to play a game-changing role in the world of landscape architecture – and find a place at the heart of every kind of project imaginable. NEWFLOOR company has been founded in the 80’s by the owner Mr Umberto Matterazzo following to him ten-year own experience in the raised floor field. Since the beginning of its working activities, NEWFLOOR was the partner of important national brands specializing, during the last 90’s, in the manufacturing of hard stones in particular ceramic tiles. ECOBUILD 2018

THE EVENT SHAPED BY THE INDUSTRY

Archetech - Page 80

ecobuild is returning to the ExCeL London in March 2018 and under the new ownership of Futurebuild Events Ltd, things are set to be very different. The event is being designed and built around the industry, bringing to life the latest technology, freshest thinking and most innovative materials to keep architects at the forefront of the built environment. It is not only being shaped through comprehensive industry feedback, but also with direct input from leading industry influencers. These include Lynne Sullivan, Bill Dunster, Robin Nicholson and Peter Murray, who are all members of the ecobuild Steering Group which is helping to set the agenda for the event and will be speaking during the conference. This year’s conference takes its lead from global environmental targets, with sessions formulating practical recommendations for action. It also tackles the big UK challenges, ranging from the housing crisis to the construction industry’s own future.

Martin Hurn, Managing Director of Futurebuild Events, explains: “New, independent ownership offers a unique opportunity to completely overhaul the event. We believe that to be as relevant and valuable as possible, we need to understand and act on what built environment professionals want to see at ecobuild. We see our role as to facilitate the agenda, rather than dictate it.” ecobuild Sustainability Showcases Surrounding the conference arena will be the ecobuild sustainability showcases, home to the some of the most innovative solutions to the issues facing the built environment. The showcases will truly put sustainability at the heart of the event and allow architects to touch, feel and experience the exhibits. They include a full-scale demountable Passive Pod House from the Building Research in Architecture group and the Sustainable Product Showcase, where The Passivhaus Trust and the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products will present top innovations.

The futurebuild districts The conference arena and sustainability showcases are surrounded by the futurebuild districts. The Building Performance district will be home to the RIBA bookshop and lounge, a vibrant space next to the seminar area. It will be designed by Freehaus, a young architecture practice which won a competition in conjunction with Rockpanel and ROCKWOOL. Other districts include: • • • • • • •

Clean, private and secure environments for laboratories enhanced with secondary glazing

PsiOxus Therapeutics Ltd is a UK and US based cancer therapeutics company recently listed 25th in the Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 in 2017 for its ‘Gene Therapy for Cancer’ platform technology for the treatment of solid tumours. PsiOxus has recently expanded into 21,000 sq ft of new facilities including a state of the art research and development laboratory in The Quadrant at the Abingdon Science Park. The main contractor, Morgan Lovell specified Selectaglaze, to improve the thermal insulation and security of the building. The original primary windows were thermally inefficient, draughty and let heat escape. PsiOxus’ research and development environment demands the utmost cleanliness so a glazing solution was required to meet these requirements.

In addition, a total of 22 Series 40 fixed light units were fitted as viewing panels in the research and development laboratories. The Series 40 has a sturdier frame which can house higher weights of glass than required in a standard unit. The vision panels within the internal walls were fitted in 6mm toughened glass, and in the lab areas, units were fitted with a 10mm Pyrodur glass, providing 30 minutes of fire integrity. Selectaglaze is the leading specialist in secondary glazing, established in 1966 and Royal Warrant Holder since 2004.

As part of the refurbishment, windows with fire ratings separating the labs and corridors were also required to conform to building regulations.

Selectaglaze met the brief by installing a total of 15 horizontal slider units with 6mm toughened low- E glass in the 2 and 3 pane options to all primary windows. The inverted u-channel section was included to sit in the bottom of each frame to minimise the dust traps and enhance the ease of cleaning. All of the secondary glazing on the ground floor was fitted with Satinovo obscurity glass.

Westland Town Hall Architectenbureau Cepezed www.cepezed.nl

Archetech - Page 84

The town hall functions as a center for the council as well as for public services and ceremonial gatherings. It is situated at the Verdilaan. The new municipality office houses the majority of the municipal staff and is located at the Laan van de Glazen Stad (Lane of the Glass City). The new edifices were jointly realized within the framework of a Design Build Finance Maintain and Operate-assignment that was granted to the Groene Schakel (Green Link) consortium, which consists of Boele en Van Eesteren, Homij Technische Installaties, the PHC Dienstengroep and Kondor Wessels Projecten. The architecture and interior were designed by cepezed and cepezedinterior.

Photo Info : Lucas Van Der Wee & Gert-Jan Vlekke

The buildings were conceived with a focus on a variety of themes, such as representativeness, spatial quality, functionality, flexibility, comfort and sustainability. On both locations, the architecture is based on the metaphor of a greenhouse. After all, the greenhouse is an omnipresent element in the urban, cultural and economic aspects of the Westland municipality. Within the context of the greenhouse metaphor, the façade is the covering of everything that lives and grows inside; a thin shell enabling internal processes to proceed swiftly and smoothly. The new town hall is a place with optimal transparency. This adds to the building’s experience as well as to the staff’s and visitor’s well-being, but it also underlines the democratic character of the town hall; there is a strong visual connection between the inside and outside, between the government and the civilians. Also characteristic of both the greenhouse and the new town hall and government office is the repetition in the rhythmic of the façades. On both locations, this renders a pleasant and quiet streetscape. All color is on the inside.

Photo Info : Lucas Van Der Wee & Gert-Jan Vlekke

The town hall and municipality office were designed such that all logistic movements proceed naturally and intuitively without mutual hindrance. Both buildings have a high degree of flexibility, among other things because of the large, almost column-free floor fields that are easily rearrangeable according to any way of use or interior concept. The installation techniques are fully aligned to this spatial flexibility; for instance by means of the application of climate ceilings, the buildings remain climatologically comfortable throughout, regardless of the type of use or interior arrangement. No matter the arrangement, it is also always easy to connect to the variety of installation-technical facilities such as AC and ICT outlets. Photo Info : Lucas Van Der Wee & Gert-Jan Vlekke

Open staircases are prominently positioned, stimulating their own use and with that a healthy use of the building. Daylight gets through everywhere and is omnipresent. The materials are robust, need little maintenance and were produced sustainably.

Page 85 - Archetech

The buildings are CO2-neutral. The use of energy is strongly reduced by means of a variety of modern-day techniques and materials such as triple glazing, LED-lighting and the control of lighting and ventilation based on (the degree) of human presence. The energy nonetheless needed is largely derived sustainably through over 1.120 m2Â of partly thermal pv-panels with a joint revenue of 115.000 kWh per year. Phase Change Materials function as a thermal buffer storage.

layout of the different services is logical, natural and clear. The boardroom is sizable and many rooms are multifunctional. Movable wall panels grant maximum flexibility and adaptability. During the day, the committee rooms can be used as meeting rooms. When the flexible walls are fully opened, a large open space for press conferences, parties, weddings, exhibitions and large gatherings comes into being The materialization is typically Westland-related: elements like plant beds in the surrounding area, as well as the use of glass and wood, refer to the glass city’s greenhouses. The furniture is upholstered in the colours of the Westland’s municipal logo. The atmosphere is open and intimate at the same time. Visitors feel welcome, also due to the hospitality of the staff. Along the Verdilaan, the building is in full interaction with its environment. Among other things due to its transparency and location in the heart of Naaldwijk, but also because of the integration of the municipal archive, the public and administrative center is the place where the Westland past and present meet. The exterior of the municipal office at the Laan van de Glazen Stad has a matter-of-fact appearance; the interior is spacious, inviting and representative. The building consists of two generic office bays with a high, luminous and green atrium in between them. Among others things, the atrium comprises the reception and restaurant. It has a strong visual relation with the entrance square. Photo Info : Lucas Van Der Wee & Gert-Jan Vlekke

Sustainability was also achieved through the method of industrial, flexible and demountable (IFD) construction, which rendered the realization highly efficient and made for a minimum of materials and waste. A flexible use and optimal possibilities for the re-use and recycling of elements are also key within the method.

Archetech - Page 86

Fitting in with the urban scheme, the building basically consists of a long rectangular volume. At its backside, a generic bay of three storeys contains the public consulting rooms, the restaurant kitchen, offices and the historic archive with accompanying reading room.

The large open space of the atrium holds several ‘islands’ that seem to float freely in space. They are connected to the office floors by means of walkways. The islands are fitted with seats and coffee pantries; it is here where employees discuss the weekend or, for example, eat cake on a birthday. Thus, the islands not only significantly contribute to spatial diversity, but also play a key role in stimulating meetings, interaction and social cohesion. Also, they are part of the traffic routes between the two office bays, which can be arranged freely.

In front of this generic bay lies a large, transparent and inviting atrium. One side of its ground floor level holds the public entrance area; the representative reception area and restaurant are situated on the opposite side. In the middle of the atrium, the council functions are housed in a spacious ‘furniture-like’ construction. This has had rounded ends, extra high ceilings and a skin of glass and wooden slats. The lower level contains the shared functions of the the administrative apparatus like the committee rooms and the conference center. The upper level comprises among others the council hall, the room for the Mayor and Aldermen and the party chambers.

The municipal office offers a contemporary working environment with different types of workplaces and many options for meeting and sharing knowledge. The ground floor houses general functions like the project, meeting and instruction rooms, as well as the dispatch and technical areas. The upper floors are arranged with different types of workplaces in open, semi-open and more confined areas in a gradual scale ranging from bustle through murmur and peace & quiet. The quieter, more private areas are situated along the façades; the areas for meeting and cooperation are positioned along the lively atrium. The informal living rooms with both high and low tables and chairs connect directly to the meeting islands. At the building’s end, the upper floor holds a special brainstorm lounge connected to an outdoor balcony.

The transparent atrium façade offers passers-by a direct view on the administrative functions, while the wooden slats nevertheless make for a sense of demarcation as well as lend the administrative furniture-piece a special appearance and dignity. The high degree of insight and transparency is inviting and the light and warm appearance accommodates an agreeable working environment. The

The municipal office has an overall appearance that is both professional and attractive. As in the public and administrative center, the colors used for the interior elements stem from the colors in the Westland logo. As an identity-enhancing element, wall-wide photo prints with typical scenes from the Westland life are used in a variety of spaces.

Vectaire Ltd Vectaire Ltd had pleasure (and fun) in contributing a dozen EL1003 for a DIY SOS Children in Need project in Swansea. The challenge was to build (in eleven days) a new Centre and supported housing for young people in care and leaving care. Vectaire was delighted to donate both the required Elegance 1003 fans and their expertise with on the spot advice as to the best ways and means of installation. EL1003 is a quiet-running, extremely economical, PCDB listed, 3 speed centrifugal fan designed for installation in walls, ceilings or windows in all domestic wet rooms. It has an energy saving EC motor which runs continuously at a pre-selectable choice of 2 lower speeds - depending on whether it is installed in bathroom or kitchen - and allows the user to boost fan capacity when required.

Out of sight, but not out of mind Architects are often confronted with the seemingly impossible problem of ensuring indoor air quality meets acceptable standards, but without using ventilation equipment that spoils the building’s interior design. One of the biggest issues confronting the building services industry is the battle to maintain good air quality inside buildings without using equipment that is unsightly or noisy. This is a key consideration in any conversation with an architect whose concerns are, not surprisingly, to maintain the aesthetic quality of their design and not upset interior sightlines. We are all familiar with the principle of controlling temperature inside buildings to improve comfort and health. When it is too hot or cold outside, people expect to be able to step into comfortable conditions inside. The same principle should apply to air pollution with people expecting a similar protection from outside conditions – not forgetting that we spend around 90% of our time indoors. As a result, adequate ventilation is a major preoccupation for design teams – so being able to balance healthy conditions with a discreet design is something of a ‘Holy Grail’.

Demand At Air Diffusion we are seeing a dramatic increase in demand for our FlowBar range of high capacity linear slot diffusers.

Archetech - Page 88

These are designed to combine a very high air handling capacity with maximum flexibility and subtlety.

They are suitable for either ceiling or sidewall applications fitting discreetly into a stylish interior to provide both practical and aesthetic benefits. The discreet and stylish look of these diffusers allows them to blend into a design so they can be almost invisible, if required, or can become part of the interior design by providing sleek lines in walls or ceilings. As a result, they have received a warm reception from both architects and interior designers as a piece of equipment that blends into the overall design. FlowBar is available in straight lines or curves to blend with other architectural elements and enhance the overall concept of the project while also ensuring the occupied internal space is adequately and efficiently ventilated. The flexible, modular design means they can be configured in a wide variety of lengths and slot depths to fit in with an interior design. This is a product that naturally lends itself to bespoke solutions, which means the ventilation industry is able to live up to the exacting standards and deliver the best of both worlds – something of an architect’s dream. 01746 761921 www.air-diffusion.co.uk sales@air-diffusion.co.uk

WORDS: Steve Birch, Sales Director, Vogue (UK)

‘Hot Topics’ with Vogue (UK) Most consumers will only buy a radiator or towel warmer one to three times in a lifetime and therefore now consider it a luxury purchase for the home. Becoming more comfortable to explore the advantages of bespoke heating design, models which are luxurious and non-specific to a certain room are performing best right now. Offering endless styles and combinations to heat the home, premium design radiators and towel warmers are now available with integral fold-away storage rails, practical mirrors and remote control function to ensure the height of convenience and utility. The introduction of atypical materials and finishes has also become the latest look in interior fashion, compelling the need for more unexpected, advantageous heating design at the higher end of the market. Helping to create a minimalist aesthetic, metallic finishes are elevating contemporary heating designs for the better, welcoming new finishes like brushed and bright nickel or antique copper or brass as a point of difference.

This desire has also led to developments in texture, allowing homeowners the opportunity to move away from the standard smooth, highly polished chrome aesthetic. The market now offers a choice of matt finishes and tarnished effects to choose from, and for the height of contrast, homeowners can combine this style of rail finish with an integrated flat panel radiator in granite or coloured glass. This is a great way to give your customers a sense of personal style, as well as move away from the standard white finish to create a heating solution suited to any décor, interior or individual. By taking a more advisory role with your client, you can focus on design creativity and service as this will help achieve a positive outcome for all. For instance, selecting the right finish and material is just as important as style; you need to make sure the model chosen co-ordinates with the fixtures and fittings already in place and plays to the modern homeowner that yearns for high attention to detail. Podmakers

www.podmakers.co.uk

The Escape Pod Ash Ltd and the 30 years of design experience Dominic brings to the team.

The Escape Pod is an elliptical, organic, rotating pod. An engineered, unique outdoor space which can be used as a garden office, studio, snug or retreat. Designed and crafted in the Gloucestershire countryside, the Escape Pod was born out of a desire to create a beautiful, striking outdoor structure. One that nestles into its environment, is made to a high-quality finish and is contemporary in style. A unique space to escape to, the Escape Pod offers a place to work, meditate, socialize or sleep. To achieve its curved form, the pod’s design exploits innovative CNC milling and making techniques. This enables it to be fabricated with precision in the workshop, entirely from wood. Birch plywood, chosen for its strength and aesthetic qualities, forms the structure. It is exposed internally; from the pod’s framework to the bespoke laminated door hinge. Cedar and Oak develop a silver hue, allowing the pod to blend harmoniously into its surroundings. The organic nature of the Escape Pod’s materials contrasts with the engineering employed in its design. Amongst its most impressive features is an aircraft-style plug door with a unique wooden hinge mechanism. The pod sits on a raised platform half a meter from the ground which allows it to be rotated - by lifting the steps, it is spun to face the desired direction. Each pod can be tailored to suit the clients’ needs, from the window placement and internal finish to the integrated fittings and furnishings. Heating (wood burner or underfloor), electrics and insulation options can also be incorporated. The price of the Escape Pod starts at £19,800 but will vary slightly, depending on style specifications.

University of Birmingham’s Library

The demolition of the adjacent deficient 1950s library will create a ‘green heart’ to the campus, improving both site circulation and the setting of the historic buildings. The new Library has a colonnaded frontage to this open space, at the natural centre of the University

Archetech - Page 106

Associated Architects Associated Architects’ feasibility study concluded that a new building rather than refurbishment of the existing library would best meet the University’s needs.

A brief was developed focusing on the user, rather than the collection, with intuitive, natural circulation. The plan is bisected by a central street running northsouth. This generates the internal planning, creating quiet study spaces around the building’s perimeter. 17,000sq.m of floor space is arranged over six levels with a series of lightwells running through the building. The angled west side is aligned to the new ring road, with railway and canal beyond. This arrangement exploits views and maximises the scheme’s presence seen from the railway. The new Library has a contemporary aesthetic, with a high level of glazing maximising views in and out to achieve optimum day-lighting to quiet perimeter study areas. Anodised aluminium fins and automatic blinds provide solar shading, adding a layer of detail to the elevations, with ceramic granite cladding to the cores. The importance of the south-east corner beside the University Centre is emphasised by the tower, orientated toward the landmark University clock tower.

Photo Info : Images: - Tim Cornbill

The façade of the building was required to meet a variety of criteria. A balance needed to be achieved to utilise natural light but avoid overheating from solar gain. Active solar shading was integrated to control internal temperature, which creates a dynamic face to the building that changes at different times of day. Feature anodised gold vertical fins add another layer of external solar shading and create a rhythm to the façade. High insulative values were required to meet the target reduction in energy use in comparison to the existing library. The façade utilises a standard Schuco FW60 system with an integrated Schuco CTB roller blind and bespoke extruded fins.

Located on the Ground Floor are a café and an open plan atrium space which can be utilised for exhibition/events to showcase research at the University. Open access facilities take up half the ground floor atrium, the other half is populated with IT desks to make a vibrant circulation space. The reserve store is placed below ground on the sloping site, to keep overall height down and ensure ground floor activity. With some 62 kilometres of shelving, including 12km of open access bookshelves, the library provides a new home for the thousands of books and publications owned by the University.

Archetech - Page 108

Concrete was specified for the structural frame so this could act as exposed thermal mass to help with energy efficiency. Large areas of soffit and all columns were to be exposed so a detailed specification was produced to ensure that the highest quality finish was achieved alongside restrictions of number of blowholes and surface variations. On site, a clear Kiem wash was applied to the concrete throughout the building to help provide a consistent finish. Early design coordination was required to confirm lighting positions as these were cast into the slab, to be fed from the raised access floor above.

Acoustics are one of the most crucial factors to consider when designing a library. Two large atria and perimeter study spaces required treatment to ensure the acoustic criteria was met. The feature gold staircase in the centre of the building acts as a large acoustic baffle, with insulated metal perforated panels wrapped around its structure, alongside insulated panels that line the perimeter of the slab edges in the atria. Suspended metal acoustic baffles are located above the perimeter study spaces to ensure sound doesn’t break out into the atria. Other study spaces vary in function from individual study, group workspaces and silent study spaces, so these are treated locally with a combination suspended baffles and acoustic ceilings, to help provide comfortable spaces for students to work.

‘Microlibrary Bima’: 2000-Ice-Cream-Bucket-Project

SHAU Photo Info: Photographer: Sanrok Studio

A Jury and Popular Choice Winner in the Architizer A+ Awards 2017 www.shau.nl

The Microlibrary adds identity and is a source of pride for all the people in the neighborhood. The activities and teaching are currently supported and organized by Dompet Dhuafa (Pocket for the Poor) and the Indonesian Diaspora Foundation.

With high illiteracy rate in Indonesia and lack of reading facilities, SHAU -a multi-awarded rising architecture practice- started a mission: to rekindle interest in books by offering a designed place for reading paired with multiple community activities.ww [Why] Microlibraries: Small but Many, From Bandung to the Global South

Archetech - Page 116

In 2012, the ‘100 Microlibraries’ program was initiated to make learning attractive and reachable for Indonesia and beyond. Although the economic forecast for Indonesia is optimistic, the current infrastructure does not support to improve its Human Development Index. Eager-learning students are hindered by the lack of

facilities; libraries are far from being popular. The role of beautiful design can make libraries attractive again. Instead of positioning libraries only in city centers, why not bringing libraries closer to homes? The mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil accommodated the idea and immediately provided a site. ‘Microlibrary Bima’ is the first realized prototype of a series of Microlibraries in different locations throughout Indonesia and the Global South. More microlibraries are under construction and in planning in thirteen different neighbourhoods and parks in Bandung. Each microlibrary is uniquely designed to fit programmatic demands of each site and community. [What & How] Microlibrary Bima: Upcycling 2000 ice cream buckets Microlibrary Bima is located at Taman Bima in Bandung, Indonesia. The neighborhood consists of diverse middle and lower-income residents. The building is situated in a small square with a pre-existing stage that was already used by the local community for gatherings, events and sports activities. The planning intention was to add rather than take away, so SHAU decided to enhance the open stage by shading it, making it rain protected and cover it in form of the floating library box.

The building is constructed via a simple steel structure made from I-beams and concrete slabs for floor and roof. The stage was reworked in concrete and a previously missing, full-length stairs were added. As the building is located in a tropical climate, the aim is to create a pleasant indoor climate without the use of air conditioning. Therefore, it is important to use available façade materials in the neighborhood that were cost efficient, could shade the interior, let daylight pass and enable enough cross ventilation. Initially, the architects found several small vendors selling used, white and translucent jerry cans. However, prior to construction the jerry cans were no longer available in the required quantities. Instead, the team found used plastic ice cream buckets that were being sold in bulk. This turned out for the better as they have a more positive image and are more stable when cutting the bottom open for cross ventilation. While studying design options of how to arrange 2000 ice cream buckets, SHAU team realized that they could be interpreted as zeros (opened) and ones (closed), thus giving them the possibility to embed a message in the façade in the form of a binary code. SHAU asked the Mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, a supporter of the project whether he had a message for the Microlibrary and neighborhood and his message is: “buku adalah jendela dunia”, which means ‘books are the windows to the world’. The message can be read starting from the top left (facing the front) and spirals down around the perimeter repeatedly. Not only does the facade give additional meaning to the building but the buckets also generate a pleasant indoor light ambiance since they scatter direct sunlight

and act as natural light bulbs. The buckets were then placed in between vertical steel ribs spanning from floor to roof and are inclined towards the outside to repel rainwater. For more harsh tropical rainstorms translucent sliding doors in the inside can be closed temporarily. Mounting 2000 buckets, making the fixture and punching out bottoms of more than half of them is time consuming. However, the local craftsmen made their own punch out/cutting tools to be faster while also maintaining sharp and clean edges. The Microlibrary adds identity and is a source of pride for all the people in the neighborhood. The activities and teaching are currently supported and organized by Dompet Dhuafa (Pocket for the Poor) and the Indonesian Diaspora Foundation. However, the ultimate goal is to enable the local people to organize the content and maintenance independently. A local elementary school has started to visit the microlibrary 2 times per week as a part of their curriculum. The Architizer A+ Awards 2017 Microlibrary Bima received both the jury and public choice awards from New York-based Architizer A+ Awards 2017 in the ‘Community + Architecture’ category. The project competed with entries from 100+ countries. SHAU proposes to elevate the role of architecture consultancy; architects could –and should – also become a stakeholder, project owner, fundraiser, and community engager. This attitude is in contrast with the classical notion of architecture as a mere service industry. Signage graphic design: Nusae Contractors: Yogi Pribadi Pramesti Sudjati Joseph Lunardi [Who] About SHAU SHAU is a rising architecture and urban design practice creating innovative and imaginative designs which aim to pose statements on societal and environmental issues, by incorporating alternative energy sources, new and recycled materials, and multi-programmatic spaces. Established in 2009 by Florian Heinzelmann, Tobias Hofmann and Daliana Suryawinata in Rotterdam (Netherlands), SHAU has expanded to Passau (Germany) and Bandung (Indonesia). Their key built and ongoing projects include a high-rise community residential tower ’Swarnabumi residence’ in Bandung, a 70 hectare-alternative reclamation masterplan in Jakarta, a 1000m2 semi-open air ‘Film Park’ and 100 ‘Microlibraries’.

MSA leads industry

with rigorous testing process MSA has won the rigorous German DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik) safety

We haven’t had to actually change our products to achieve this recognition, and it proves they stand the test of time.”

certification for its Latchways Constant Force® system.

Since MSA acquired Latchways in 2015, the company has continued to invest in developing its fall protection business.

MSA’s Latchways Constant Force® post for Kalzip standing seam (65/400) roofing has successfully completed all Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) testing and approvals. Having worked closely with Kalzip, MSA can now offer DIBt certification for work-at-height safety across Germany, giving access to the engineered fall protection systems and PPE that have long since set the standard worldwide. Further profiles are currently undergoing testing. This recognition from DIBt, the German body that approves non-regulated construction products - proves claims that the company offers the best testing on the market.

Technical Manager, Tim Bissett, says: “We test all our products and systems above and beyond the very latest standards. We have in fact exceeded European standards since our Constant Force Post® was launched. This certification from DIBt just confirms our forensic attention to detail and engineering excellence.

MSA has led the fall protection market in the UK for a number of years, and is fast becoming a globally recognised manufacturer, thanks to its engineering innovation, rigorous test methods and rapidly expanding portfolio. Tim concludes: “To us it’s simple - before specifying any fall protection system, check what standards it has been tested to. When lives are at stake, you have to be sure.” For further information please contact your local MSA affiliate or visit MSAsafety.com.

Page 119 - Archetech

MSA’s fall protection solutions already exceed both the Europewide requirements set out in the EN 795 standards and the guidance in ‘The Magenta Book’ which recommends testing anchor devices on representative roofs - the exact structure they will be used on.

Tim continues: “We are committed to investing in innovative fall protection, and testing is a fundamental part of this. The DIBt guidelines require fall protection systems to be tested on the specific roof type they will be used on. Different roofing structures perform differently under load and in order to provide the lifesaving protection fall protection necessary it is wrong to assume that because a fall protection system is suitable for one structure, it is also suitable for all structures. This is the very foundation of how MSA does business - we understand exactly how and where a system will be used, and we used our engineering expertise to develop the highest performing solutions.”

SIGNBOX ENJOYS award-winning 2017

Archetech - Page 120

Sign and display graphics specialist, Signbox is looking back at a successful 2017 after it picked up three major awards and two commendations throughout the year. The Egham-based company won the Architectural Sign of the Year Award and the inaugural Décor Award at The British Sign Awards, as well as a FESPA Gold Award in the Decals and Printed Labels category at the FESPA awards earlier in the year. The British Sign Awards, acknowledging the outstanding work of sign businesses in the UK, recognised Signbox’s work on the Dakota building in Weybridge, Surrey in the Architectural Sign of Year category. As part of a major renovation, Signbox provided elegant and eco-friendly signage to reflect the building’s modern, contemporary feel and the local area’s aviation heritage. This included the creation and installation of an LED illuminated skyline sign, a glazed entrance foyer sign, an external ground level sign and wayfinding monoliths. The Décor Award recognised Signbox’s work at the new London office of Greece’s Alpha Bank in central London. Alongside the architects, Signbox helped to deliver a range of detailed environmental

graphics, manifestations and bespoke signage in muted taupes and bronzes that befitted Alpha Bank’s Greek heritage. Signbox’s work on the iconic illuminated, rotating New Scotland Yard sign was also ‘highly commended’ in the Architectural Signage of the Year and the Illuminated Sign of the Year categories. Earlier in the year, at the FESPA Awards, Signbox brought home a gold award in the Decals and Printed Labels category for its work last year at the London headquarters of book publisher, Hachette UK. In collaboration with the Graphics History Company, Signbox delivered a mural made up of thousands of iconic author names, forming a “river of authors” into a flowing representation of the River Thames. “This year has been one that Signbox can look back on with great pride,” says Signbox Managing Director Mark Bartlett. “To have received awards and commendations for four projects is fantastic and is true testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.” Want to put our award-winning skills to work on your project in 2018? Replacement Balustrade

A great many character or period properties have stone balustrade incorporated into their design. These balustrades make a large visual impact, but they also have a practical purpose as barriers and screens.

A common cause for the demise of a balustrade is the presence of water. Many original balustrades were made from artificial stonework such as Roman Cement, Concrete and Stucco. These were often reinforced with iron or mild steel bars which rust and expand when exposed to water over a long period. Other balustrades were made of natural stone such as Portland Stone or Bath Stone. While these types of balustrade do not suffer from ‘blown’ reinforcing, they do have a finite life span and the surface of stonework will often delaminate or form powdery patches.

Henry Moore StudiosHugh &Broughton Gardens Architects Archetech - Page 124

The Henry Moore Foundation was founded by the artist and his family in 1977 to encourage public appreciation of the visual arts. The Foundation supports innovative sculpture projects through a global grants programme, runs exhibitions and research worldwide, and conserves the legacy of Moore himself. Despite careful preservation of landscape and buildings at Moore’s home at Perry Green in Hertfordshire, the Foundation’s activities had outgrown their facilities, which were in need of an overhaul. In 2007 the Foundation commissioned Hugh Broughton Architects to prepare a masterplan to create an improved visitor centre, an enhanced archive and new sculpture stores. The brief demanded robust, economic and intelligent solutions with high levels of energy efficiency achieved with buildings which

would be sympathetically integrated into the sensitive landscape of Moore’s estate. The first building, completed in September 2011, was a 1300 square metre blackened oak-clad store for sculptures in bronze, wood and plaster, tapestries and works on paper. The second, larger phase of the masterplan comprises the redevelopment of the visitor centre and offices, and creation of the archive. The brief for this second phase was based on the principle of re-use and extension of existing buildings, thereby minimising impact on the estate and preserving the environment, which the Moores cherished. The existing offices, drawing and print stores had been housed in Danetree House since 1977. With expansion of the Foundation’s activities the offices had become too cramped. Visitor facilities were also inadequate. The shop and ticket sales were housed in

Photo Info :www.huftonandcrow.com Hufton+Crow

the ground floor of a small terraced house overlooking the green and separated from Moore’s sculpture garden by a road. Food was sold from a small kiosk with visitors only able to sit at outdoor tables. There were no dedicated spaces for schools, and toilets were in poor condition. Danetree House has been fully re-purposed to accommodate environmentally controlled art stores, an art-handling workshop and offices for curators and administrators. The building has been extended to accommodate visitor facilities within a grey stained sweet chestnut and glass pavilion, which includes a new Interpretation Room for visiting school groups. The pavilion structure wraps around the north, east and south sides and doubles up with a sweeping curve to create the first floor offices of the curators. The building has been meticulously re-planned to ensure the separation of public and private functions, maintaining Henry Moore Foundation’s ‘Known Consignor’ status, which is critical to its international art handling operations. The transparent design maximises views of Moore’s bronzes set in the gardens around his Grade II* listed home.

The design of both buildings reinforces the relationship of the visitor with sculpture and landscape. The calm and sensitive architecture is characterised by natural materials, light and space. Details and workmanship reflect the Foundation’s commitment to craftsmanship. Engineering systems have been sensitively integrated with the architecture, with a common plant solution shared between the two buildings, providing different environmental conditions on a demand-led basis. Sustainability underpins the design. Heating and cooling to both buildings is provided through a shared ground source heat pump with vertical boreholes in the gardens adjacent to the new archive. Projecting canopies to south facing elevations minimise heat gains and a natural ventilation strategy has been devised for all public and office areas.

The library and archive of the Foundation are the world’s leading resource on the life and work of Henry Moore, containing publications, correspondence, photographs and exhibition material. This peerless collection was housed in a former dwelling, which was in poor condition. The house has been fully refurbished, re-presented and substantially extended with a new monopitch wing clad in oxidised steel panels, selected to complement the woodland site. A timber lined reading room with a louvred corner window and a fully glazed entrance pavilion give glimpses of the activities within, and offer views out to

the gardens which Moore so appreciated. Storage areas are fully compliant to national standards for the conservation of archive material.

16 Bespoke Armstrong ceiling stuns in Scotland Armstrong’s new DGS system adds wow factor but cuts costs.

An Armstrong suspension grid for plasterboard ceilings, which is up to 40% quicker to install than traditional systems, has been used as the foundation for a completely bespoke, visually stunning day care centre ceiling that was created at a fraction of the cost of a specialist solution. Armstrong’s Drywall Grid System (DGS) was used to form a curved ceiling at Scottish War Blinded’s new Hawkhead Centre for visually impaired veterans in Paisley, Scotland. Other Armstrong systems have been used in a different new building on the same former garden centre site - the Jenny’s Well care home for older people with sight loss, run by Scottish War Blinded’s sister charity Royal Blind. www.armstrongceilings.com

How Benfield ATT help you create

The Low Energy Buildings you’ve always wanted… Intrigued by the claims of this ‘full service’ company we decided to investigate their approach a little more. Value Engineering: First, we wanted to know what was meant by ‘Value Engineering’ (VE). Professor Dr. Michael Benfield, their CEO, explained: “By focusing on the various ‘functions’ of a client’s building and its components, we aim to identify and remove unnecessary costs while at the same time maintaining - even enhancing - its performance.” Comprehensive Knowledge: This approach blends their extensive and rather unique knowledge of all forms of timber structure, building science, regulations, and state of the art products with individual client’s design concepts. “For us, value engineering starts with environmental planning and regulatory impositions as part of our analytical and technical design processes.” he explained. “These feed our drive for, and commitment to, sustainable development through into waste reduction, recycling and lean manufacture. It embraces a ‘Pride in the Job’ and a ‘Right First Time’ mentality that is applied to all our Design & Build (D&B) operations.”

Archetech - Page 130

Focus on End User: Paying attention to end user demands is central to Benfield ATT’s approach (the ATT stands for Advanced Timber Technologies, by the way). They believe it enables them to deliver highly effective, quality buildings for projects large & small. This includes providing solutions for difficult to develop sites, like soft ground, steeply sloping land and potential flood plain areas. Product Selection: Self-evidently, to value engineer design & build solutions, the selection of the most appropriate products needs the services and methods used to be an integral part of the process. Working closely with architects, building designers, engineers and quantity surveyors, Benfield ATT helps select and specify those which are most functionally appropriate and cost effective. In turn this encourages the delivery of high quality products to be protected, and results in saving time for on-site build operations. All of this, they claim, reduces costs, enhances client’s projects and helps to make them one of the most competitive full service timber engineering design and build firms in the UK. Fabric First: In the current business climate it is perhaps not surprising to find Efficiency, Performance & Cost Effectiveness

to be included in their key current considerations. This is most clearly evidenced in their ‘Fabric First” approach to designing really effective building envelopes. “There is a crucial need to deliver highly energy efficient structures with optimum levels of insulation, minimal thermal transmission and appropriate airtightness for floors, walls, roofs, windows and doors.” explains Prof Benfield. Unsurprising, therefore, that in their drive toward Zero Carbon and minimal heating requirements, they offer factory Insulated Panels, SIP’s, Green Oak, Post & Beam, Glulam and Hybrid structures all orientated to achieve what was Code for Sustainable Homes levels 4, 5, 6 and Passivhaus Standards. Specialist Builders’ Merchants: Potentially, the procurement of design specific components can create unforeseen difficulties, for example locating the source of supplies, avoiding delays in delivery lead times, quality assurance, and securing ‘best value’ products and terms. Here Benfield ATT’s long established connections, access and volume buying capabilities as manufacturers and selective builder’s merchants, enables them to secure and supply such requirements in the most timely and competitive manner as part of their value engineered, design & build methodology. Catalysts for Quality: “We believe that our approach to helping you create the ‘Low Energy Buildings you’ve always dreamed of …’ is distinctly different” says Benfield. “We welcome collaboration with other construction professionals in our drive to achieve this.” In doing so, his company aims to help enhance the professional construction team of architects, other designers, engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, house-builders, developers, et al, facilitating the delivery of the high quality buildings they and their clients both need and want. And, if end user clients like self-builders and home improvers lack any of these skills, to be the catalyst drawing in those that are most appropriate for each individual project. To compliment this they offer a selective part or full project management service. Professional Partnerships: While they are happy to engage in ‘one off’ projects, Benfield ATT see the greatest benefits to industry and end user occupiers as coming from the establishment of long term ‘partnering’ style arrangements with other construction professionals. This can include Joint Venture arrangements for specific developments, which may be of interest to land owners and those who wish to fund, say, housing schemes, but lack the technical knowledge and industry experience necessary to make them successful. In such cases they believe that their comprehensive team approach can be highly valuable.

SketchUp 2018 is here! Deliver work you're proud of

Smarter Sections

Make Better Drawings

Section planes now have names and symbols, making them easy to find and organise. Filled section cuts are now baked into SketchUp Pro! There is also improved performance for models that use section planes to hide a large amount of geometry. The more geometry you section off, the more you'll benefit!

Need to add linework that's not in your model? Create scaled drawing in LayOut and sketch over a 3D model to flesh out your project, or draw from details to scale directly in LayOut. With inferencing, chamfering and filleting, arcs, offset arrays and selections; LayOut is even better at everything you need to draw details or create beautiful illustrations at scale.

Got BIM? There’s more!

We’ve introduced Advanced Attribute fields fo a component's Price, Size, URL, Type Statu and Owner. Generate Report now aggregates component data so you can do things like configure reports to sum parts and quantities and cutlists, or create detailed estimates by adding up prices by layer. You can rely on IFC in SketchUp to transfer the attributes you assign and manipulate in projects, allowing for information to move freely between SketchUp and other applications.

• Import DWG files into LayOut

• Native support for importing and exporting STL files

• Multi Viewport Dimensioning

• Improvement to Outliner's overall load performance
