lemay redefined the language of the office environment, with a wealth of attractive, informal gathering spaces.

Lemay, Quebec’s Leading architecture, design and urban development firm, is celebrating another feather in its cap: its third American Architecture Prize (AAP). The prestigious international award recognizes Lemay’s unique, user-driven design and stunning architectural branding for leading construction firm Pomerleau in Lévis, Quebec. “From every angle, the new Pomerleau offices near Quebec City speak to the client’s mission, values and culture, thanks to our integrated design approach and process,” said Louis T. Lemay, the firm’s president and excellence facilitator, of the eloquent gesture made by Lemay’s architects, interior designers and landscape architects. “This architectural branding of the work environment reinforces employees’ engagement and sense of belonging.”

with open-area workstations and floor-to-ceiling windows lining the periphery, for maximum penetration of natural light and stunning forest views: a proven way to enhance employee productivity and well-being. Common areas are positioned strategically throughout the indoor environment. Attractive places to gather and share ideas, the fully glazed meeting rooms encourage teamwork while coffee stations become informal meeting places to socialize, helping to foster the company’s collaborative core values and a natural synergy. The central hall is the convergence point of the three wings, defining the building’s reception, main staircase and a meeting room. It overlooks the courtyard in the foreground and the forest beyond. “We made the forest a defining feature of the project,” said Eric Pelletier, Lemay partner, design principal and project lead.

The unique, three-wing building features an exposed steel structure and visible mechanical equipment, recalling construction framework and emphasizing Pomerleau’s role as a builder. The use of raw materials reinforces this notion: natural pine, polished concrete, steel plating. These and other industrial touches help the building to integrate with a greater Pomerleau campus that hosts warehouses and garages, as well.

Page 7 - Archetech

Lemay also redefined the language of the office environment, with a wealth of attractive, informal gathering spaces encouraging teamwork and synergy. The building’s few closed offices are central,

“The extra-large windows frame the lush greenery and bring it inside.” The edgy new work environment won over the 2017 AAP Jury with its “Design Excellence, Innovation and Function” in the Industrial category. Two other Lemay projects just earned AAP recognition through honourable mentions, as well. It’s a fourth nod for the harmoniously integrated downtown Montmagny Library (in the Infrastructure category), which won a Wood Design Award in the Heritage category this year from Cecobois, the centre of expertise in commercial wood construction, and a 2015 Architecture Award from the Quebec Library Association. Notable for its eloquent melding of new construction with an existing former presbytery, the library was also a runner-up in the Quebec order of architects’ Institutional and Public Buildings category in 2015. It’s a first honourable mention for the sensational Paquet Wharf and Esplanade in Lévis, Quebec, with its monumental fountain. What was a barren, post-industrial ferry wharf has

It was in the running in the Public Architecture category.

Lemay’s much-awarded Bibliothèque du Boisé won two American Architecture Prizes in 2016, the award’s first year - one for Institutional Architecture and one for Cultural Architecture. About Lemay: Creative Intelligence. Collective Value. Founded in 1957 as an architectural practice, Lemay is one of Canada’s leading integrated design services firms, merging architecture, urban design, interiors, landscape, engineering, sustainability and branding into a multidisciplinary and synergistic ensemble. With 10 offices worldwide (including one in New York since 2015), it ranks 79th in the world (World Architecture). Lemay has won over 300 awards and distinctions. Leveraging its unique blend of creativity, capacity and expertise, Lemay champions its clients’ aspirations, enhances users’ quality of life and strives to build a brighter future for our communities. lemay.com/en

Archetech - Page 12

Open space environments and flexible office concepts are the biggest challenge in lighting design. Those who master this task benefit from a number of advantages. Lighting that can be controlled by individuals lays the foundation for fatigue-free working. It increases productivity and satisfaction, which in turn reduces sick days. From an economic viewpoint, state-of-the-art LED light sources provide an efficient, maintenance-free, energy-saving and cost-minimizing solution. what is good woRk Light? Light has a significant influence on many processes inside the body. That’s because it affects the production of various hormones. For example, the sleep hormone melatonin, which ensures that we relax in the evening and glide into a restful sleep.

Everyone has their own daily rhythm, which is largely controlled by natural daylight. We spend much of our time indoors and a lack of regular exposure to light disrupts our daily rhythm. Modern LED lighting, such as LUCTRA®, can almost completely replicate the natural course of daylight, thus ensuring a balanced day-night rhythm. we aRe aLL uniQue In the past, offices were dark and cramped. Now offices are designed to be brighter, but having ‘bright’ light is simply not enough. Surveys have shown that neutral or warmer light (less blue) is perceived as more pleasant. Plus, we are all unique with each individual preferring a different light colour and brightness. Just as we have ergonomic chairs which can be adjusted to each user’s preferences, we can now give each user control of their workspace lighting. contRoL via aPP The user interface is at the heart of all technology. LUCTRA® light colour and intensity can be intuitively adjusted using the touch panel or an app. After answering five questions about your daily routine, the app can also create an individual light curve which controls the brightness and colour of the light throughout the day automatically. Simple.

A new self-build, timber frame cottage in Shropshire, benefited from a highly effective render and wall insulation system that is also suitable for a wide range of building types. Keen that the property should blend in as much as possible, they chose Lime Green products for the surface render and, whilst consulting on what products to use, the homeowners discovered that the highly effective wall insulation system – Warmshell – would be perfect for their new build. It offered an important additional benefit on a small plot over a traditional masonry build. For the same heat U-value the timber framed construction has a smaller footprint leaving more space for the garden. Consisting of a unique combination of wood fibre boards and special lime render, Warmshell works by enveloping timber frame structures in a complete layer of rigid insulation with minimal air gaps, or ‘thermal bridges’, across which cold can travel inwards. However, because Warmshell leaves walls breathable, damaging

moisture won’t get trapped in the structure and a healthier environment will be created inside. For Taylor Lane who were also responsible for onsite installation of the timber frame, using Warmshell was a good solution. The 100mm wood fibre insulation boards were fitted to the outside of the stud framework and a 10mm. OSB board on the inside, onto which battens with plasterboard were fitted to form a service cavity and then finished using Lime Green’s Solo decorative one-coat plaster. The joints between the internal OSB racking boards were taped to effectively create an airtight box within the timber frame. A high level of airtightness was required as a heat recovery system was being installed. Warmshell also provides excellent insulation for heat and sound. Much Wenlock is a beautiful historic town in Shropshire, perhaps best known for being the birthplace of the modern Olympics. Full of gorgeous period properties and with space at a premium. When an opportunity arose to build on a plot in the centre of the

town, the homeowners leapt at the chance to create their very own dream cottage from scratch. The site was relatively tight and with a narrow drive as the only means of access, building on the site was potentially challenging. To avoid the noise and disruption of a constant stream of lorries delivering heavy building materials, the couple opted for a timber framed construction, to be built and customised offsite by Hereford-based manufacturer, Taylor Lane. Small holes were then drilled into the OSB boards through which loose cellulose insulation was blown under pressure to completely fill the void and every potential air gap in the wall. The cottage now had, in effect, solid walls of insulation that were both strong and provided excellent U-values.

Having specified a highly energy efficient home, when tested for airtightness, the cottage leaked just 3m³ per hour, much less than the 10m³ per hour that Building Regulations demand. The heat U-value achieved was 0.18 W/ (m2K). Not surprisingly, the underfloor heating is only needed a few times in winter, which means that the couple not only have the dream cottage they were looking for, but also a very energy efficient and inexpensive home for their retirement. For more information visit: www.lime-green.co.uk

Page 15 - Archetech

On the exterior walls, Lime Green’s Prepbond base render was applied to the Warmshell boards, with a glass fibre reinforcing mesh worked into it. The walls were then completed with a top coat of Lime Green Natural Finish render and their mineral silicate paint. As well as enhancing the very attractive design of the property, the inclusion of oak windows throughout, a green oak porch and the use of local stone create a strong link with period properties nearby.

bim and vectoRwoRks yurky Cross ChArTered ArChiTeCTs is a London-based firm that specializes in affordable housing and mixed-use projects in the South East. The firm often faces two reoccurring challenges with projects in the city: space and differing opinions. Yurky Cross Chartered Architects’ Practice Director Michael Cross and Senior Architectural Technician Christiaan Briggs used Building Information Modeling (BIM) to solve these issues for a project on Lewisham High Street. Following the demolition of buildings on Lewisham High Street in the SE13 area of London, Yurky Cross designed 6,460 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and 51 self-contained residential units.

Archetech - Page 18

“Lewisham went through numerous iterations and discussions with planners,” said Cross. Like almost all of their projects in London, maximizing the potential of the site was the first concern; the design called for a scheme that fully filled the

Cross explained, “As a very prominent site in Lewisham High Street, there were many opinions about how the building should look.” Using a column with brickwork laid out in a grid system, Senior Architectural Technician Christiaan Briggs and his team created visual plans in Vectorworks for an exterior that worked within the street context, while still standing out. To accomplish this, Yurky Cross created a BIM model for multiple design iterations. Yurky Cross has used the software for over 20 years, and Briggs has been working with Vectorworks for his entire career. “It’s very flexible, and we’ve always been able to directly model anything we like,” he said. The firm keeps all of its work directly in Vectorworks Architect, freeing up time that could be restricted by switching between different, specialized tools and allowing the team to make the most out of each BIM model they create. “We don’t tend to hop in and out of other programs,” Briggs added. “Vectorworks checks a lot of boxes, not just in conceptual design, but also presentation, modeling, everything. You can stay within that one program and get the work done.” learn more about the software the empowers yurky Cross Chartered Architects at www.vectorworks.net/uk/archetech2018

sioo:x wood PRotection sioo:x is A PATenTed (wo2007111556) silicon-based twopart wood surface treatment process that was developed in Sweden over 15 years ago, where it finds extensive use in the DIY market. The surface protector acts to prevent the wood protector from leaching out until it has cured. The wood protector undergoes a chemical reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide to deposit insoluble silica particles in the wood. Light scattering from the silica particles gives an even silvery-grey appearance to the wood surface, looking just like weathered wood. The silica envelope that forms is completely stable to ultra-violet light, unlike oil and varnishes, which are based on carbon chemistry. It is the even-ness of the silvery-grey appearance that is one of the most attractive features of the product. For new build, factory finishing is always to be preferred so that the product can be applied under controlled conditions. The product works best when there is good penetration of the wood material and rough sawn surfaces are better. Where planed surfaces are specified it is important to sand the surface to break

through the machining glaze that is often present, in order to allow the product to fully penetrate the wood. The treatment can be applied using brushing or spraying and good penetration is the key to good performance.

www.sioox.org.uk

A sound investment – minimises life cost Sioo are leaders in wood protection using silicate technology. We provide a

highly effective proven system to protect wood of all types. It gives long life and a beautiful natural surface with even colouration and is friendly to people and the environment. An example of a Sioo project is Ålleberg High School, a low energy building in Falköping, Sweden.

suRRounded by wateR and framed by mountains, the unique urban cityscape of Vancouver’s downtown is defined by its spectacular natural setting. ‘The Exchange’ is located in the heart of this downtown area. Selected by the city officials as one of a few new, high density, office developments in the city’s central business district this new tower will bring valuable diversity, revenue and jobs to the neighborhood and to the city as a whole. The design rationale for the new ‘Exchange’ tower is entirely derived from its surrounding context and environment; in particular the existing Old Stock Exchange building, which is to be preserved and rehabilitated on the site. This refined, handsome and elegant building has facades of carefully composed vertical pilasters that are designed both to best accentuate its height and at the same time ground the building within the streetscape of the city.

By both breaking up the mass of the tower over its entire height and by recessing its bulk from the perimeter of the site above the Old Stock Exchange, the new building allows the existing structure to fully define the streetscape, retaining and confirming its proud position within the heart of Vancouver’s downtown. As the form of the tower retreats lower down to better define the original form and independence of the Old Stock Exchange, it consequently grows higher above to maximize its potential on the site. Here at the upper, more valuable floor levels, the tower steps out in two directions to provide larger, more efficient floor plates. These steps consequently create terraces on the tower’s

sides that are optimally positioned to exploit the best views of the surrounding city and the dramatic panorama of the mountains beyond.

system responds to the solid pilasters of the Old Stock Exchange Building that is to be retained on the site whilst accentuating the verticality of the tower itself, defining a more uniform and slimmer overall appearance of the building from all orientations.

The stratification and stepping of the tower’s form, coupled with the chamfering of its corners both reduces its overall bulk and impact on its neighbors and leaves the Old Stock Exchange building as the single-largest element on the site, emphasizing its presence within the city center.

The vertical mullions perform a further function, shading the building envelope and significantly reducing its cooling load requirements. Their passive screening effect also greatly improves the visual privacy between the tower and its immediate residential neighbor, Jameson House.

Restricted by viewing corridors from creating a strong intervention on the skyline, ‘The Exchange’ instead looks to create a distinctive icon within the space of the city itself. Viewed from the street, its cantilevered form creates a unique identity further pronouncing its individuality and historical pedigree. A respect for the architectural and significant socioeconomic heritage of this original building is also paramount to the origins and identity of the tower’s façade design. The strongly vertical nature of the Old Stock Exchange’s façade is echoed in the elegant pinstripe of the tower’s external aluminum mullions. This unified

He aimed at creating an environment that fathoms synergies from his two decades of partnership at Herzog & de Meuron and the research work of his chair ‘Laboratoire Bâle’ at the Swiss Federal Technical Institute in Lausanne (EPFL). In doing so, distinct interrogations of science, engineering, environment, society and art should find vigilant responses. Already within its first years of practice, the Studio, based in Basel, successfully designed and executed work in Switzerland, Canada the Middle East and Central America. Projects range in scale and functions, from urban schemes and civic buildings, to private houses, exhibitions and furniture. Particular emphasis is placed on the singularity of each project, aiming at exploring its distinct potential, in close collaboration between HGS, clients, users and corresponding consultants. 1. www.hgugger.ch 2. www.theexchangebuilding.ca

schöck soFtwaRe suPPoRt moRe extensive than eveR The exTensiVe rAnge of free online and downloadable software from Schöck is one of the most comprehensive in this market sector. It offers wide-ranging support to the design process in areas such as product selection; thermal analysis; structural analysis; and BIM services. One of the most recent developments is the inclusion of a design program for the Isokorb types KS and QS in steel-to-concrete connectivity situations. This complements the company’s existing calculation software for designing concrete-to-concrete and steel-to-steel connections. The program is also able to calculate natural frequency, which allows a check on the serviceability of the whole balcony system with regard to vibration. It calculates the natural frequency of thermally broken steel balconies using numerous geometric and material variables – and even proposes options for steel side plates, end plates and on-site stub brackets. There is an online thermal bridging calculator too, which produces substantiated thermal bridge analysis in just a few simple steps. The calculator computes two-dimensional heat flows, isothermals, temperature factors, surface temperatures and psi values (values). The calculation results provide architects, structural engineers and building physicists with all the information needed to produce a detailed thermal bridge analysis to identify compliance with part L regulations.

bim libraries Special object libraries and plug-ins have been developed for users of the leading BIM systems. At present, these libraries are available for the standard Schöck Isokorb product portfolio (concrete-to-concrete, steel-to-concrete and steel-to-steel) for Allplan and ArchiCAD CAD systems, with Revit and Tekla to follow. Two levels of detail are available in the plug-in. One for preliminary planning and one for execution planning. Visit the Schöck site at www.schoeck.co.uk for all the latest software and product development updates

Black: industrial, stylish, metropolitan. The impact of a bathroom in which strong shades of black are used is unequalled; this latest interior trend is inspired by the robust industrial look of yesteryear.

EMOTIONS COME THROUGH MUCH STRONGER IN BLACK AND WHITE. COLOUR IS DISTRACTING IN A WAY, IT PLEASES THE EYE BUT IT DOESN’T NECESSARILY REACH THE HEART.

Black is a powerful, elegant and luxurious colour. It enhances shapes and emphasises contrasts. Black also radiates energy and vitality.

OPERA: ART AND WATER Clean lines and a robust structure. An eye for detail in the finish and flowing movements when opening and closing.

In the picture: Opera

Beauty and technology meet in Opera, a shower door characterised by a nice finish and a clean design. Opera is ideal for styling a modern space thanks to the smart use of the contrast between glass, the black finish and the surroundings. The industrial style of the matte black Opera results in a chic and elegant look.

DISTINCTIVE CHARACTER If the interior is all about contrast, then this is highlighted by Zephyros. A clearly present frame of the shower door with a distinctive character: a gusty design. The matching matte black handgrips and details give it a tough look that fits in perfect with the latest interior trends.

In the picture: Zephyros

MINIMALISM AND CLEAN LINES Young 2.0 is versatile and adapts to endless situations. The shower walls make maximum use of the space thanks to the slender frame and the large proportion of glass. A tight division of the shower area with nice details for an immaculate and elegant feel. In the black version Young 2.0 can be easily combined with the natural beauty of Novosolid, a shower floor that fits in with the new interior philosophy of natural materials because of the stone texture. ART IN THE SHOWER AREA An ode to the steel frames of yesteryear that are back in today’s latest interior trend. The Kuadra H walk-in shower with the new black line pattern, which is a wonderful look-a-like of the industrial, steel frame, makes each shower area a true work of art; a striking bathroom that reflects the personality of its resident.

waterproofing a West country vision In looking for a full tanking solution for the ensuite bathrooms of renowned chef Michael Caines’ dream project, stone specialists Devon Stone elected to use various forms of the multi-functional tile backerboard Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD.

than Schlüter; their product knowledge and expertise is unrivalled in the UK”.

Devon Stone also made use of specialist KERDI-BOARD variant, Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD-V, to waterproof the curved shower walls that were a feature in some of the bathrooms. This product features pre-cut grooves that allow for the quick creation of a smooth curved surface that is ready for tile or stone to be installed upon.

Project overview The project took a Grade II listed Georgian Manor house and converted it into a striking contemporary country house hotel with 21 guestrooms. As well as gourmet cuisine and luxurious yet subtle interiors, Lympstone Manor has pride of place overlooking the Exe estuary, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the wildlife it supports.

Insight AreA: bathrooms (floors and walls) ACTion: Providing a smooth and waterproof substrate for marble The beautifully furnished ensuites accompanying each guestroom not only required complete waterproofing, but also a not-inconsiderable degree of levelling and smoothing due to the age of the building.

Archetech - Page 38

“Given the nature of the project, if water had managed to cause an issue, it would have cost a considerable amount to put right”, says Simon Willmott, Sales Director at Devon Stone, “We needed a reliable solution and in our eyes there was no other option better for the job

“In converting a Grade II listed house built in 1760 into a luxury hotel, the main challenges were in straightening and strengthening the walls and floor without changing levels”, continues Simon, “Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD was a great help in allowing us to achieve this”. The walls and floors within the project were constructed of 18mm plywood, with the former being lined with 12.5mm KERDI-BOARD and the latter with a mix of 5mm and 12.5mm KERDIBOARD, depending upon floor heights. The boards were then sealed with KERDI-KEBA and KERDI-COLL-L to form a fully waterproof base for the high calibre

5mm and 12.5mm are just two of the seven thicknesses that KERDI-BOARD is available in; the range carries boards of 9, 19, 28, 38 and 50mm thickness besides. Whilst the boards at the thinner end of the spectrum are designed for use over existing substrates, latter thicknesses can be used as construction panels to create features such as shelves, partition walls and seats, allowing for unbridled freedom of design. in the case of lympstone manor, kerdiboArd aided the creation of bathrooms that will support and protect an exquisite and highly personal accomplishment. for more information on how schlüter-systems can help with your tile and stone projects, call 01530 813396, email pr@schluter.co.uk or visit www.schluter.co.uk. devon stone are specialists in the supply, specification and installation of natural stone. for more information, visit www.devonstone.com.

Product Profile: Schlüter®-kerdi-boArd When specifying for a project, products that save time and face are always appreciated. Offering design flexibility, ease of installation and enabling the creation of CE marked bonded waterproofing assemblies, the versatile Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD is the answer to many a specifier’s prayer. KERDI-BOARD is a cement-free, multi-functional installation board, suitable for use in both renovation and new-build projects. It provides CE Marked bonded waterproofing with no need for additional finishing processes and can be used over substrates as diverse as masonry, stud frame constructions of wood or metal and mixed/existing substrates.

© Mark Ashbee

KERDI-BOARD also makes for a considerably greener alternative to other options, such as plasterboard and cement-faced products; its construction consists of an extruded hard foam core panel, with a special reinforcement material on both sides and waterproof fleece faces to finish, providing effective anchoring in the tile adhesive. The foam core of KERDI-BOARD is thermally insulating, helping to conserve energy use and improve comfort. The absence of a cementitious layer means that it costs less to transport and produces no dust when cut, making for healthier working conditions and avoiding release of toxins into the wider environment. To the benefit of trade relationships, the advantages of KERDI-BOARD extend beyond design versatility and through into the process of construction. For contractors, a move to KERDIBOARD represents a quicker and easier installation process, with time savings being made due to its light weight and ease of cutting.

Why Do i neeD A wateR soFteneR?

AlmosT 70% of our wATer contain minerals which make the water hard. These form lime scale in hot water systems, on taps, baths, shower heads and screens. The scale in hot water systems fur up pipes and reduces water flow, it also coats heating coils and elements dramatically reducing the ability to heat the water. Scale acts as an insulator causing electric elements to over heat and fail, resulting in expensive repair costs and higher heating bills. Fitting a water softener will prevent this happening but over time it will remove most traces of existing scale from the system. some of The AreAs where sofTened wATer is beTTer! Personal washing Soft water will allow the soap to lather more easily enabling you to wash in silky luxury with no hard scum being formed

Showering Shampoos also work more effectively in soft water needing only a fraction of the normal amount of shampoo, soap or gell, as there is no sticky hard water scum ,you are left with fresh feeling soft & silky skin. The shower head, screens, tray and tap stay clean and do not get coated in unsightly white lime scale.

Water heating when hard water is heated lime scale is deposited in the hot water tank or heat exchanger (in a combi boiler) which rapidly reduces the heating efficiency causing the boiler to take longer to heat the water up and use more fuel, it could also cause the hot water tank or heat exchanger to fail prematurely costing hundreds of pounds to replace!

you don’t need to be agatha chRistie or Sherlock Holmes to solve the problem of steamed up mirrors in the bathroom. The solution is elementary! Install demista™ heated mirror pads and the steam vanishes almost immediately. These pads are easy to fit behind the mirrors, are wired in to the electrical system and no more wiping away steam or trying to peer through a mist, no matter how steamed up the bathroom. For this reason demista™ is the first choice for builders, developers and home owners both in the UK and abroad. Leading hotel groups and prestige apartment developments now include the pads as the norm in either new build or refurbishment projects. A selection of Earthborn wall paints and timber finishes was used to create an understated style in keeping with the age of the property. Earthborn products were specified because of their breathability, important for lime plaster and timber. Claypaint was used on all walls and ceilings. The walls inside the built-in wardrobes had a first coat of Earthborn Isolating Primer to prevent smoke stains bleeding through from the chimney breast.

The kitchen’s wooden furniture gained a matt finish from Eco Chic Claypaint, topped with a clear protective coating of breathable Earthborn Furniture Wax. siRi is a Renovation project of commercial building. It is used as a house and a third sister’s jewelry office. In order to serve the big family with 4 members, brothers and sisters, and the future family members, a large utility space is necessary. The site is two identical commercial buildings with narrowing inside. The design must utilize the space to give every family member a compact private area comprising of rest area, pantry, bedrooms as well as a living room with light well.

To achieve this, all units are double-leveled. Each unit is differently and separately accessed by the elevator which is set at the back of the building. The top level is the main living room and dining room for the family. In the middle situate the residential units while the jewelry office is at the ground floor. IDIN Architects perceive “nature” in two ways. Firstly, it can be defined as the ecology around us. Secondly, it can also refer to different mannerisms and personalities. The design philosophy and concentration of IDIN is to merge this sense of surrounding, the “natures”, to the architectural aesthetic. This merge is done through a process of analyzing and prioritizing the different needs and requirements of each project. In addition to being an acronym, the Thai word “idin” is used to describe the natural phenomenon when soil releases a beautiful scent after rainfall. This symbolizes Thailand’s tropical climate, something all IDIN designs aim to respond to. Our emphasis is therefore placed not only on aesthetics, but also on practically, in order to suit this temperate environment.

SwItchable Smart FIlm

just what are the advantages?

We all love glass partitions, they make a great addition to any office creating an illusion of greater space whilst retaining a little privacy. Managers can keep an eye on the activity outside without being distracted by normal office noise. The disadvantage of glass partitions is that there are times when you do not want people outside being able to see in. It could be that you are having a heated discussion with a member of staff, displaying sensitive information on white boards or projectors or simply taking time out. There are many situations that are best kept private but nobody wants to work in a box with no windows.

Archetech - Page 52

One of the huge benefit of our Switchable Film is that it can be applied to existing glass or office partitions. A great alternative to switchable glass and a great deal less expensive. www.adswindowfilms.co.uk/smartwindowfilm.htm There is more to this product than meets the eye, the switchable film can act as a projection screen for meetings or presentations. arChiteCts set to welCome new enhanCed range oF sliding door systems From sChueCo

ContinUoUs improvements and modiFiCations in the Schueco range of sliding doors help to secure the company’s deserved reputation as the UK’s premium system innovator. The latest product range to be launched has the advantage of being modular and fully scalable thus maximising architects’ freedom to choose, whatever the type or scale of the project. The new Schueco ASE 60/80 platform launched this month by Schueco UK, is a range of superior sliding door systems that provide a complete and elegant solution for high-specification domestic and commercial properties. Covering both sliding and lift-and-slide doors, the new Schueco ASE 60/80 platform comprises fifteen opening types including six singletrack options. The result is greater choice, maximum design flexibility and the ability to accommodate widely differing project requirements.

Schueco ASE 60 and 80 doors have a basic frame depth of either 60 mm or 80 mm with a maximum vent size of 3.2 m x 3.5 m, which is the largest currently being offered in the market. The inclusion of SmartStop and SmartClose technology ensures safe, trouble-free operation. Maximum vent weights are equally impressive, with both systems being able to accommodate loads of up to 350 kg, offering the possibility of enhanced thermal performance through triple glazing. Rollers positioned in the middle of the vent distribute the weight evenly, minimising friction and ensuring that vents move particularly smoothly. A Design Line option is available on all the doors. Design Line offers enhanced design benefits such as concealed fittings that leave the visible surfaces of the vent and outer frame completely flush and a slimline interlock with a 40 mm sight-line that delivers today’s preferred ‘more glass, less frame’ look allowing maximum light transmission. Both systems exhibit exceptional thermal performance. The Schueco ASE 60, in spite of its narrow depth, offers Uw of up to 1.1 W/m2K, while the high-performance Schueco ASE 80.HI meets stringent Passive House standards. Additional features of the Schueco ASE 60/80 platform include profiles that, being symmetrically identical, enable the vent to be positioned on either the inside or the outside. The new building is linked to the main hospital via a glazed bridge. Arranged over two floors, the £10m unit combines under one roof the hospital’s various cancer facilities and integrates pastoral care through an onsite Macmillan Information and Support Centre. Outpatient and support services are located at ground level, while the staff facilities, a conference suite and the main treatment area – an open-plan ward with calming views over the Derbyshire countryside – occupy the first floor. The NGS Macmillan Unit is already improving the hospital’s usability for both patients and staff. By consulting throughout the design process with all the stakeholders, the architects have created a cancer center that delivers first-class clinical facilities; bright, comfortable patient focussed spaces; and a spacious efficient workplace for medical and administrative staff. Guy Barlow, Director at The Manser Practice, says the building realizes the brief’s ambition for a space that is “uplifting and meets the complex care needs of cancer patients in the wider Chesterfield area”.

Keble preparatory sChool, in Winchmore Hill has provided high-quality education for pupils aged between 4-13 since 1929 and now has more than 200 pupils who enjoy a wide range of academic, cultural and sporting activities. But during the busy school day, the movement of equipment and the normal traffic of pupils and staff was taking its toll on the interior walls of the main building. As well as looking unappealing, the damage was a drain on the school’s maintenance budget as precious time and money is spent on the constant repair and redecoration of the walls. John Field, Bursar for Keble Prep commented “We needed to find a permanent solution to protect the interior walls from continually being marked and scuffed. “We came across Yeoman Shield through a recommendation and thought that their wall protection systems could be the solution to our ongoing problem.” A Yeoman Shield Area Sales Manager visited the school to undertake a no-obligation site survey and advise which products would best meet its needs.

Archetech - Page 62

Yeoman Shield’s skilled fixing operatives then installed the 2.0mm thick wall protection panels in the company’s FalmouthEx finish during the Christmas break to minimise disruption to pupils and staff. The panels, supplied in Dusty Grey and Royal Blue colours, were fitted to 1200mm high in the senior school ground and top floor corridors, as well as to stairs and stairwells. In addition, 75 x 75mm corner protection angles gave a neat finish to the panels, as well as offering added protection to vulnerable corners.

The fitted wall protection will prevent unsightly damage and avoid the need for costly repair and redecoration, helping the school to maintain its pristine appearance and protect its maintenance budgets too. “We are exceptionally pleased with the quality of both Yeoman Shield’s products and workmanship. Being able to do the installation work at a time that was the least disruptive to the running of the school was a bonus,” concluded Mr Field For more information on maintenance saving wall & door protection products call 0113 279 5854 or go to yeomanshield.com

room is bespoke, so we were able to utilise different laying patterns, something which is so much easier when using wellengineered products, as they’re quicker to install versus other materials that have to be retrofitted on site.

More than 1,800 sqm of Transform was installed across 14 oneto five-bedroom studio apartments and cluster flats to provide a stylish and hard-wearing floorcovering for the Let’s Live Here St James’ View scheme.

“It’s not often you get a floor covering of such quality at a decent price point and the finished product looks fantastic. The rooms look very sophisticated – more like a hotel than student accommodation, so we’re really proud to have worked on the project.”

Dubbed as ‘a place where you get more living from your living space’, the rooms offer high-tech kitchens, en-suite shower rooms and space to study, socialise and entertain.

Neil Wilson concluded: “My brief was to deliver a high-end look and I think the Moduleo flooring was the icing on the cake in this respect.

Neil Wilson, owner of Neil Wilson Design, said: “’Sophisticated Scandi’ was the look I was going for, so I needed a floor covering that would complement the grey and feature colours, without causing a distraction and also offer texture without too many ridges.

“All of the interior elements complement each other nicely and the client is really happy, so you can’t ask for much more than that!”

“The flooring needed to add to the soft, contemporary, warm feel, so aesthetics were important but, it also needed to withstand heavy footfall on a daily basis and fit within budget constraints. Moduleo’s Transform products fit the bill perfectly.

Moduleo is manufactured in Belgium by the world’s leading manufacturer of vinyl flooring, IVC Group. To find out more about the St James’ View project, visit http://www. stjamesview.co.uk/. To find out more about Moduleo, visit www.moduleo.co.uk

Trevor Duggan from Monument flooring added: “We’ve used Moduleo a lot for commercial schemes, but this is the first time we’ve worked with the materials on a large-scale student accommodation project. “The great thing about the St James’ View scheme is that every

APPLETHWAITE

HOMES

The residential development arm of the Eric Wright Group

A major construction and development company operating across the North of England, appointed IntelliHeat Advanced Electric Heating for the specification and supply of the Electric heating systems for their recent development Applethwaite Hall, in Windermere providing quality homes in North West England. After researching the market and comparing products, Steven Speight from the Eric Group contacted Intelliheat. Steven understood the critical importance of identifying a product that not only would it be energy efficient, but a product of high quality that would suit the style and high-spec of the development. Equally important was the after sales care to ensure the products were set-up in the optimal fashion to deliver on all the efficiency tools that feature on modern IntelliHeat electric heating systems, and a professional technical support team who could be contacted by both the developers and in future by the property owners, ensuring that the long guarantee provided with the products meant that the client would never be more than a phone call away from resolution!

In addition to the excellent service that Applethwaite received by IntelliHeat, the other key consideration for the purchase was the cost of supply and installation. The cost of supply and installation for the entire 12 IntelliHeat systems with remote programming and energy monitoring technology included was reasonably and surprisingly well within their budget whereas just supply and installation of the gas boiler and wet systems for the 12 properties would have been much higher. Furthermore, the developer would have needed to pay to have the gas routed and supplied to the properties which would have added additional, considerable cost. The client has been delighted with the smart heating and the service they have received. The addition of the IntelliHeat product range to Applethwaite Developments client proposal has added value and choice to the developers offering - making customers feel valued, improving the quality of the property offering and delivering a truly bespoke Smart electric heating experience for each and every customer! If you would like to extend your product range and add a quality solution to your off-grid developments just contact IntelliHeat and they will provide you with all required branded marketing collateral to suit your corporate identity. INTELLI HEAT© Advanced Heating Solutions | T: 0845 163 0055 | www.intelligentheat.co.uk

Page 69 - Archetech

Having taken into consideration all the factors involved with the specification of the heating systems for these properties it was decided that the only sensible solution was to proceed with the IntelliHeat product. Following an initial product specification process, Applethwaite settled on the Cali Eco-Sense range with Sophia Towel Rails in bathrooms and en-suites. All facilitated through an app based remote control and energy monitoring system, the IntelliHeat Smart-phone based WHAPP

system. In total, over 50 Cali Eco Sense radiators, 21 towel rails and 12 remote programming and energy monitoring WHAPP systems were specified and installed across the 12 flats and all communal areas.

tHe Uk’s largest British designer and manufacturer of designer radiators and towel warmers, Vogue (UK), proudly launch the new VIVID Towel Warmer: a contemporary heating design now available with Electric Dryline Technology. This pioneering and new Dryline Technology exclusive to Vogue (UK) means that VIVID does not contain any fluids. Instead, this contemporary towel rail design is heated by a silicone heater cable via a 3-core cable which can be attached to a fuse spur, if required.

So what’s the advantage of Electric Dryline Technology? Put simply, this type of heating solution does not operate off the central heating or hot water system, allowing for greater freedom of installation and efficiency. VIVID runs independently of the heating or hot water system, thanks to a precision engineered Dryline element which remains invisible to the eye. Minimalist in style not function, the VIVID Towel Warmer is crafted from high quality brass and is defined by its mitred joints, contemporary plain tubing and lustrous chrome finish. Other finishes are also available. VIVID with new Electric Dryline Technology is available in 4 different heights and three widths:

All units and systems can be installed as stand-alone or manifolded to provide unlimited hot water for the largest of all commercial sites such as big hotels, busy gyms, high rise offices etc. Water temperature is and can be pre-set through easy-to-use built

in digital controls, eliminating the risk of scalding and potentially eradicating the need for thermostatic mixing valves. Water can be used simultaneously at several points of delivery with no fluctuation of temperature. The newly updated Rinnai Infinity range is designed for use directly off the mains, with no need for large, ungainly and energy inefficient storage vessels. For example, Rinnai’s Infinity 16i continuous flow water heater is designed to meet the hot water needs of domestic and light commercial applications. The Infinity 16i, weighing just 18kg and measuring less than 675mm (H) x 139mm (W), has a delivery capacity of 15.2 litres per minute, at a temperature rise of 25°. Rinnai Heavy Duty water heaters are high efficiency gas continuous flow water heaters with outputs up to 69kW. The Rinnai Heavy Duty HD50i Internal water heater is a wall hung, gas fired, continuous flow water heater capable of producing hot water at 770 litres per hour at

a 50°C rise. The HD50i has a 125mm concentric flue which can be extended up to 15m, less 1m per 45° bend. Compact and reliable, the HD50i operates between 1-10 bar pressure, which is suitable for mains and systems with boost pumps. Incoming water temperatures in excess of 60°C are accepted, making the HD50i suitable for secondary return systems. Water can be delivered at high volume with minimum gas consumption. All models have full electronic ignition with no pilot light and operate on demand only, consuming no gas when not in use. All Rinnai internal HDC condensing continuous flow water heaters, are room-sealed, power flue appliances while the external weatherproof models have forced exhaust which enables them to be compact, saving both floor and wall space.

Rinnai’s unique condensing technology incorporates two heat exchangers to achieve optimum water heating generated from every cubic metre of Natural Gas or LPG. The condensing process delivers up to 95% thermal efficiency, which translates to significant energy savings when compared to standard on-demand water heaters or conventional stored systems. For applications where the use of stored hot water cannot be avoided, i.e. in refurbishments where there may be a constraint on the amount of gas available, usually through the gas main size, Rinnai’s ‘pack’ system covers this shortfall by fitting a small amount of storage capacity. Rinnai Gas Hot Water Storage Pack represents the best value-formoney solution on the market today with everything delivered direct to site in one complete package The pack consists of up to five heavy duty water heaters with an equal number of flue kits (for internal heaters) or an equal number of pipe cover boxes (for external models) and sufficient valve packs. Also included is one hot water storage vessel (stainless steel 300L, 500L or 800L glass lined steel) along with necessary valves and one primary pump with valves and one unvented kit. Add to this an expansion vessel of either 50L or 80L capacity, and all relevant valves. Common header flue systems are also available to further stream line the installation. Typical applications for the commercial ranges include cafés, nurseries, factories and offices, laundries, hotels and restaurants, sports clubs, shower blocks in caravan parks – and many more. Rinnai has also embraced renewables in the form of the Rinnai Booster, which, it claims, is the most energy efficient boosting solution on the market today. The water heater maximises solar gain, as it only functions and consumes energy when more hot water is needed to boost the solar gain, meaning that the true impact of solar is being achieved. The rest of the time the unit is inactive.

The tower is a simple large form, yet dynamically curved in the horizontal section with smooth, rounded surfaces. The building’s

The ORBI Tower is located in Vienna’s “TownTown” urban development zone on the fringes of the Prater, a local recreation area and the green axis of the Danube Canal. It takes seven minutes to travel from the 115 m high tower to St. Stephen’s Square (Stephansplatz) by urban transport. The airport is just a 12 minute carried away. The tower boasts 21 600 m² of office space for rent on 26 floors.

The project provides a tower rising from a trilobate, an orbiform, which together with the existing neighbouring tower forms a gatelike close to the TownTown-Piazza while at the same time also acts as a salient head in the southeast direction. One broadside of the trilobate points towards the Piazza in the direction of the entrance to the underground station thus marking the main access to the building and defining an attractive forecourt. One narrow side is oriented towards the east and acts as a curve to the motorway junction.

aerodynamic base form with its curves drawn into space through its horizontal structuring is engaged in a dialogue with the curves of the adjacent motorway section. In contrast to the crystalline structure of the neighbouring buildings the project acts as a mediating design element to this transport infrastructure object. The facade is a band double facade offering mobile, wind-protected external solar protection. The colour of the glazed parapets gradually changes from bottom to top so that the building shows a soft colour progression from dark to light grey over its entire height. This optical effect “dematerialises” the building as it rises further up.

Archetech - Page 80

The building’s internal configuration is largely determined by the need of compact traffic areas and office space allowing for maximum flexibility in organisation. This requires an optimised structural and installation core at the centre with a circumferential, freely usable space. Essential design criteria are related to the claim for a sustainable building, taking ecological factors into account. The building will been certified according to ÖGNI. The focus is on an efficient use of energy, water, and other resources, protection of user health, and a reduction of waste and undesired emissions. For the benefit of energy efficiency the use of passive systems is at the centre to reduce the necessary share in technical systems to a necessary extent and thus keep lifetime costs low. The activated concrete ceilings in the building part function as a

release system for heating and air conditioning. The three lower floors house the storage and engineering facilities as well as the parking area for passenger cars. On the ground floor public facilities and catering establishments are located next to the lobby also stretching through to the first floor. Upper floors 2 to 25 are designed as individually divisible office spaces. The selected building depth and configuration of the inner cores allow for a wide range of different forms of office organisation providing maximum flexibility. Thanks to its high flexibility the reversible office strategy has proved to be an optimised concept for investors which is easily adaptable to the wishes of individual users and as such generates high sustainability.

In the emergency exit staircase bright colours and posted slogans encourage stair climbing, athletic success can be verified on each floor with heart beat sensors.

Today the portion of communication zones and flexibly used spaces must be substantially higher than in classical offices as employees are less and less tied to their workplace. Rather than standard desks and office cabinets the furniture recalls flats, restaurants, or recreational premises. Chill-out zones and creative areas alternate with computer work stations.

Archetech - Page 88

Our most recent project was working with a construction group where we designed a bespoke solution for their luxury London apartments. By listening to their requirements and collaborating with them we were able to design a product bespoke to them. Why you should buy from hideaway Beds: • Comprehensive sales and product support should you require any assistance. • We provide full after-sales assistance, including support with technical enquiries. • 25 years’ experience, including contract supply to universities, hospitals and holiday villages. • With a wide range of complete space saving solutions & wall bed mechanisms available, we can provide options to suit spaces of all shapes and sizes.

All our systems undergo rigorous testing to ensure maximum safety for the end users. Features such as enclosed spring mechanisms & spring covers will prevent users trapping their fingers. Most mattresses are compatible with Hideaway’s beds – the only restrictions being sufficient mattress depths and weight as the spring mechanism is designed to counter balance standard mattresses, i.e. foam, sprung, etc. We are committed to innovation in our product range, we are always continually improving the design and bringing new products to the market.

piZZa oven supplies pizza ovens, Wood bUrning ovens, bread ovens, call them what you may, but there is no doubt they are becoming more and more fashionable as people look towards entertaining at home more. Not a new idea by any mean, ovens that burn wood and store heat go back thousands of years. Every continent has their own version of a woodfired oven, with the Italians and Ancient Greeks being responsible for the main development of standard design. Nick Riley, MD of Pizza Oven Supplies Limited, story begins around six years ago he was asked if he could build a pizza oven like what Jamie Oliver was cooking on in his television programme. “I trawled youtube and Google for ideas, then, eBay and Amazon for pizza oven materials. Mmm, so confusing, the information contradicted itself and the prices varied so much.” Then he contacted the local pottery business’s in his home Stoke on Trent. And that was the Eureka moment. “Stoke had been building pottery kilns for centuries” All the knowledge and materials were right on his doorstep.”

Archetech - Page 94

The design he developed obviously works as after four years in business, he has over 600 customers, with three of them being premiership footballers.

He uses what is called kiln furniture in the manufacture of his pizza ovens, this is what the famous pottery manufactures sit their ware on while it is fired. It is used once, then discarded. “We crush this down and mix it with our secret mixture of other ingredients which include perlite for insulation” Re using what are top quality materials enables Pizza Oven Supplies to keep their costs low. All the worry of wood oven design that Architects, garden designers, landscapers, builders and the general public would usually come across have been removed. Pre-designed kits with all the bricks pre-cut save valuable time on not only designing but relaying those designs to tradesmen. “Cutting over 500 bricks in someone’s garden can raise lots of safety issues, not to mention the neighbours” “Full and detailed instructions are available and I’m there for any questions you may have.” Nick states. Brian Mellor @ Harthill Cookery School comments We have a beautiful oven thanks to Nick & Sam. Not only does it look great...it cooks beautifully too which is pretty important. Our tutors and guests love it as it comes up to temperature easily and holds the retained heat, great to be outside with friends working with the oven.”

Design your pizza oven to fit in with your surroundings Based in Stoke on Trent, Pizza Oven Supplies re-use discarded products from the pottery industry and recycle them into pizza ovens. This allows us to build our modular ovens with 100mm thick walls and floor. The use of perlite in the manufacture keeps the weight of the ovens down, allowing for easy lifting and access.

Lumiscopic unveils exclusive Dichroic Lighting Collection

Inspired by light, Lisa Alcock, designer and owner of Lumiscopic has been using Dichroic Film from 3M since 2014, to create dramatic and eye-catching light responsive surfaces that change colour dependent on the viewing angle, projecting a vibrant spectrum of warm or cool coloured light.

Lisa Alcock says, “I have been working with Dichroic Film from 3M for a few years now and it has inspired me to create amazing effects with my artwork that might not have otherwise been possible. The aim of my exclusive collection is to produce a wow effect - stopping passers-by in their tracks, and generating an energising and uplifting ambience. ”

PUlSar illuminates stone Campus buildings in bahrain Having designed and manUFaCtUred products in the UK since 1970, Pulsar have a great deal of experience when it comes to architectural lighting. The Cambridge-based lighting company have a long history of illuminating buildings both large and small all around the world.

The company recently added to their ever-growing list of projects in the Middle East with the Royal University for Women in Bahrain. The university stands proud in the wealthy Awali district, which is also home to the royal palace and many of Bahrain’s elite. A very select student population consists of members of the royal family, and daughters of diplomats and government officials from Bahrain, and across the GCC. The initial degree programmes of the university were designed in collaboration with McGill University in Canada and Middlesex University in the United Kingdom. A key problem was that the unique façades on the buildings were not visible from the main road - an important artery through the area. This was deemed as a pressing priority by the governors of the institution. A 2-metre boundary wall surrounds the campus, with many of the campus buildings only being 2-3 storeys high and set more than 50m back from the boundary. Careful consideration had to be taken when choosing the correct fixtures for maximum impact.

Pulsar’s Luxeos Vivid Colour (VC) fixtures use their new custom RGBW light engines for unmatched colour mixing and consistency. aboUt pUlsar Pulsar’s factory and offices are in Cambridge in England, where they have been manufacturing lighting since 1970. For more information about this project or Pulsar, please contact: After testing on-site with various products, colours and beam angles, Pulsar’s EcoFloor 60 was selected by the University. This was due to the high quality of the fixtures, and their proven ability to survive in the searing heat, high humidity & marine-like conditions. Over two phases, over 50 EcoFloods were installed at various locations around the buildings, highlighting the campus exterior discreetly yet effectively. Pulsar, in collaboration with the customer, chose a warm white colour to bring out the colour in the natural stone. With a wide 60-degree beam, the projected light is evenly spread, and provides uniform coverage across the external façade.

Today, drivers on the Al Muaskar Highway see the elegant campus illuminated at night. Pulsar is proud to have been chosen by such a prestigious establishment, recognising our goal to provide the right solution for clients in the region.

Page 99 - Archetech

The customer also wanted to make sure that the luminaires were hidden in the daytime. Therefore Pulsar supplied the luminaires with a custom oyster white RAL finish that helps the luminaires to blend into the natural stone materials of the walls and buildings.

dÄr lighting founded oVer 40 yeArs Ago, the där lighting group is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, with a network of manufacturing partners spanning across the globe. From hightech LED producers in the far east, to artisanal workshops on the Portuguese coast; the group’s catalogue of over 1,200 products reflects a diverse range of technical skill. In addition to offering a longstanding design and distribution service to the home retail sector, the group founded the där CONCEPT studio to service architects, specifiers and interior designers. Most orders can be delivered within 48 hours and bespoke options are available from the group’s two UK workshops. The Made in Portugal collection of ceramic table lamps is entering its second year, having enjoyed a successful debut in the market. Originally specialising in ornate vases, the skilled artisans behind the collection have adapted their craft to produce lamp bases with a spectacular array of finishes. Each piece has a uniquely soulful patina, which subtly reacts to light like no other surface. Products range from the crisp white facets of the Tuille lamp to the earthy unglazed surface of Jette and the delicate colour gradations of the Ignatio, Lautaro and Abilo lamp bases.

Archetech - Page 100

The group also offers a wide selection of energy efficient LED lighting, with many pieces including integrated LEDs and all products compatible with LED bulbs. These energy-saving lights can be up to 80% more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. This is because

very little of the electricity is converted to heat, making for a cooler light fitting and far less energy required. Furthermore, LEDs have a better quality of light distribution and focus light in one direction, give more options of colour temperature (how the light emitted compares to daylight on a spectrum of blue to yellow tones), and last up to six times longer than other types of lights. The group’s Enoch and Oundle ranges reflect this technology beautifully, while the Alonsa and Wonder pendants offer unique forms only possible thanks to integrated LED technology. to browse all products in the där range, visit darlighting.co.uk

white Collar FaCtory allForD hall monaghan morrIS

white Collar FaCtory is a complex of six buildings at Old Street Yard, which includes offices, studios, incubator space, restaurants and apartments, set around a new area of public realm, with a sixteen-storey tower topped by a 150m rooftop running track. Together, these 27,200 sqm buildings provide a bold new marker for Old Street as well as creating a new, more permeable section of the city that references the alleys and passageways of the historic urban grain. The mixed-use development is the culmination of an eight-year research project led by AHMM director Simon Allford and Simon Silver and Paul Williams, directors of developer Derwent London, working in collaboration with engineering firms AKT II and Arup. This research analysed why 19th century warehouses and factory buildings have enjoyed such longevity, and how these structures could inform and inspire a sustainable development. It identified five key elements: high ceilings, deep plans, simple passive façades, concrete structure, and smart servicing, which were to become the driving principles behind White Collar Factory.

the building is intended to be ‘loose-fit’, allowing for maximum flexibility, adaptability and longevity

Designed to achieve more with less, the pragmatic, hard-working design of the tower is guided by the principles that nothing needs to be added, nothing can be taken away, and every element performs one or more function.

Page 105 - Archetech

AHMM drew inspiration for the new build tower from the work of French designer Jean Prouvé, whose design ethos was led by logic, balance and purity.

The architecture of the new tower utilises concrete in several ways. As well as forming the structure, the concrete provides the thermal mass, carries embedded cold water pipes and creates a highly expressive finish both inside and out. Board-shuttered concrete wraps the building at pavement level. Above, glazing is interspersed with metal panels punched with ‘portholes’, and banded with anodised aluminium panels. The building envelope extends above the roof height to protect the 150m rooftop running track. An inner screen of cedar shields the roof plant and 16th floor bar. In contrast, the lower rise buildings have a range of brick elevation treatments but are unified by a common modular plant enclosure at roof level. The building is intended to be ‘loose-fit’, allowing for maximum flexibility, adaptability and longevity. For the tower interior fit-out, AHMM designed the space on the principle of one person per 8sqm in servicing, and one to 6sqm in fire. Each floor can accommodate either one or two tenant companies as required. Having previously created an reconfigurable, mobile furniture system called Jack, AHMM has adapted it for The Office Group, which occupies the first three floors. Conceived to withstand the likely impacts of climate change, White Collar Factory maximises passive systems with the radiant concrete slab providing heating and cooling via a bespoke ‘Concrete Core Cooling’ system. Glazing varies in response to the orientation of the tower with most to the north, less to the east and west, and least to the south. Openable windows enable 70% natural ventilation of the floor plate, allowing the user to be in full control of their own environment. A two-level cycle hub encourages sustainable travel with space for nearly 300 bikes in the basement. The development

is rated EPC A, BREEAM Outstanding and LEED Platinum. The project has floors of 53m x 41m with a 3.45m floor-to-ceiling height – and was between 15-20% cheaper to build than the equivalent standard building. Through the intelligent use of passive servicing, the development is also expected to provide a 10-33% reduction in operational energy costs per annum (dependent on tenant fit-out approach) and 25% reduction in operational carbon emissions over a typical office building. Prior to construction, in a unique move which involved considerable financial investment, the team created a £1million prototype. A 325sqm slice of White Collar Factory jacked up on stilts was set up on site in 2013 and tested over a period of 12 months. The results of this research informed the final building design, proved the theories beyond any reasonable doubt, and enabled buy-in from the market which has resulted in a full roster of tenants from the outset. In addition to the 22,900 sqm new tower, the development comprises two retained and refurbished properties plus three new infill buildings to the south of the site. These smaller, 4-5 storey buildings knit together the previously fragmented city block and provide a diverse campus of incubator workplace, restaurant, retail and nine residential apartments. Designed in collaboration with landscape architect BBUK, the campus is arranged around a new public square, Old Street Yard, with wider pavements at the perimeter, creating a vibrant new piece of city for London. www.ahmm.co.uk

high perFormanCe Curtain walling From reynaers Creates eye-CatChing Façade

reynAers’ cutting-edge aluminium curtain wall system for facades and roofs has created new angles for a modern office building.

The design variants include curtain walls for both the exterior and the interior of buildings. Glazing variants range from standard pressure plates, structurally glazed and structurally clamped facades.

French company Groupama opted for maximum transparency and benefit from superb thermal efficiency for its premises in Charters, southwest of Paris.

Unitised curtain wall options are also available within the range. They allow entire panels to be manufactured in the workshop reducing the time on site. Both unitised and traditional stick systems can also be developed into bespoke solutions for specific project requirements.

Its building was designed by architects Agence Franc Gérard and covers 4,400m2, with an envelope in pre-oxidised copper panels. The impressive staggered façade curtain walling, created from Reynaers’ CW 50 multi-level product, incorporates vivid coloured glass inserts. The CW 50 stick curtain wall system is available in several design and glazing variants and is on show at Reynaers’ Knowledge Centre showroom in Birmingham. It includes different technical options to give maximum flexibility in design and allows frames to be placed at varying angles both horizontally and vertically, moving away from the traditional uniform grid pattern.

To take a closer look at Reynaers’ curtain walling systems, book a tour of the showroom at its Birmingham HQ by contacting 0121 421 1999, email: reynaersltd@reynaers.com, or see the website: www.reynaers.co.uk.

Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “Our extensive range of CW 50 curtain walls meets all the requirements of contemporary architecture. With regard to energy performance, the system offers different solutions, allowing the use of triple glazing – making the facade applicable for passive house or energy efficient buildings.

Extensions to the CW 50 system also offer new innovative solutions for much heavier glass weights, as well as easy assembly and quick installation, plus improved energy efficiency. The curtain wall system can achieve a thermal insulation Uf value down to 0.56W/m2K, depending on the profile combination and variant.

Page 109 - Archetech

“What’s more, dedicated opening types can also be seamlessly integrated; such as a parallel opening window, a top hung window, a hidden vent turn and tilt window, plus a flush roof vent for integration in roof applications of CW 50.”

ScottISh wInterS DIctate UPgraDe to legacy caSt alUmInIUm gUtterIng on reFUrbIShment eskgrove Homes Were employed to extensively refurbish a sizeable property in the Glenshee Area of Perthshire. This area of Scotland is well known for winter sports and has its own Ski & Snowboarding Centre, with 36 runs suiting all abilities. The property, once completed, will comprise of 10 bedrooms, kitchen, reception, playroom, dining room, hall and living room and some parts of the property date back to 1583. The existing cast iron guttering system needed replacing, but due to the increased capacity required to disperse melted snow from the property rather than just rainwater, simply replacing the system wasn’t an option. A higher capacity rainwater system was required. Eskgrove Homes liaised with their local builder’s merchant Jewsons to see what the best options on the market were. As both are existing customers of ARP they soon contacted their local Area Sales Manager for Scotland – Archie Pringle for support.

Archetech - Page 110

Archie worked closely with Eskgrove and Jewsons to understand the needs of the client and ensure that the right product was specified. Archie was also able to provide free samples of the material and the special colour of RAL 7001 Matt Silver that the client required, before the order for the material was placed.

Archie specified Legacy Cast Aluminium Deep Flow Guttering, as it is made from Cast Aluminium and is specifically designed to replicate cast iron. However, in this instance, allowance was made for a higher flow capacity for the rain and melted snow. The gutters were teamed with Colonnade Cast Collared Rainwater Downpipes, which again mimics the look of cast iron to provide the heritage style required to suit the property. ARP’s Legacy Cast Aluminium Gutters and Colonnade downpipes are an ideal replacement for cast iron due to being lightweight, easy to install and can be coated in over 200 standard Polyester Powder Coated RAL/BS colours. Aluminium is a naturally occurring and highly recyclable material. It is non-toxic and non-corrosive, and requires very little maintenance over its long lifespan. Colin Cumberland, Director or Eskgrove Homes said “The advice and service provided by ARP gave us confidence that our choice of rainwater system would be able to handle the challenging weather conditions and also suit the heritage style of the property”. ARP are happy to work with clients who purchase through merchants, and can offer site surveys and site measures to help expedite the order. the site in the Centre of L ondon is adjacent to the large courtyard of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Founded in Smithfield in the 12th century, the hospital is the oldest in London and was founded at the same time as the St. Bartholomew the Great Church in 1123. Rahere founded the church and hospital “for the restoration of poor men.” Layers of history characterize this unique site, connecting deeply to the Medieval culture of London. While most all of the realized Maggie’s Centres have been horizontal buildings, the centre at St. Barts will be more vertical, sitting on the historically charged site. It will replace a pragmatic 1960s brick structure adjacent to a 17th century stone structure by James Gibbs, holding the “Great Hall” and the famous Hogarth staircase. The building is envisioned as a “vessel within a vessel within a vessel.” The structure is a branching concrete frame, the inner layer is bamboo and the outer layer is matte white glass with coloured glass fragments recalling “neume notation” of the Medieval music of the 13th century. The word neume originates from the Greek pnevma, which means ‘vital force.’ It suggests a ‘breath of life’ that fills oneself with inspiration like a stream of air, the blowing of the wind. The outer glass layer is organized in horizontal bands like a musical staff while the concrete structure branches like the hand. The three-story centre has an open curved staircase integral to the concrete frame with open spaces vertically lined in bamboo.

The building tops out in a public roof garden open to a large room for yoga, Tai Chi, meetings etc. The interior character of this building will be shaped by coloured light washing the floors and walls, changing by the time of day and season. Interior lighting will be organized to allow the coloured lenses together with the translucent white glass of the facade to present a new, joyful, glowing presence on this corner of the great square of St. Barts Hospital.

Ajay Chauhan, architect at CPMG, the project lead designers, said: “EQUITONE [tectiva] provided the specific aesthetic requirements the client was looking for with its fine sanded surface and naturally occurring hues making each panel unique.”

Specified by Lippe Architects, the materials were fitted to the 600m2 building ensuring the exterior harmonised with and complemented the existing structure. The finished aesthetic is a mixture of textured grey tones, which works alongside the stonework on the hotel.

The new building brought Rushcliffe Leisure Centre – including a newly-installed 25m swimming pool – together with Rushcliffe Borough Council’s headquarters. All materials had to be durable, require minimal maintenance, have an excellent lifecycle and improve efficiency of the development. Mr Chauhan added: “The client wanted to use a material for the facade that was durable and low maintenance. We suggested EQUITONE [tectiva] as it’s hardwearing and has a life expectancy of over 50 years. “We’re really pleased with the overall finish of the project. EQUITONE [tectiva] was the ideal choice for this project – it gave the aesthetic appearance we hoped for, was within budget and is of fantastic quality.”

Kristen Will, associate and chartered architect for Lippe Architects, said: “It was essential we specified a material that would work well with the original building and complemented the existing stone structure. That is why we chose EQUITONE as the material helped to create an effective exterior finish. The building’s appearance has a spectrum of surfaces that we wanted to respect, and EQUITONE had the exact texture and durability we were after.” Meldrum House Country Hotel sits within a 240-acre estate and now boasts 51 bedrooms. The new property was built adjacent to the B listed mansion house, which has a textured facade with a wide range of stonework colours. Ms Will said: “We felt EQUITONE not only had simplicity and elegance, but strength in its appearance, and the diversity of the range was ideal for the project.”

Protecta launChes new serviCe transit the idea behind the new proteCta serviCe transit is that after installation, cables and pipes can easily be inserted through a fire barrier without having to install a new fire seal. It is designed to maintain the fire resistance of walls and floors when there is a breach of continuous cables. This is Ideal for situations where it will be difficult to install or replace a normal fire seal at a later stage in the building construction. The Service Transit consists of a circular high temperature plastic tube containing a graphite based intumescent lining material that expands upon heating to seal spaces or voids around cables and pipes, thus preventing the passage of flames, smoke and gases. It is available in three different lengths, 150mm, 250mm and 400mm and the selection of which to use depends on the thickness of the supporting construction and the required fire classification. Products like this Service Transit are quite popular and are usually added to normal fire seals to make the building safe. It also provides some peace of mind for property owners as it reduces concerns about later services being properly fire sealed and the associated costs. In the long run this saves time and money.

Archetech - Page 116

What is unique about the Protecta Service Transit is its patented fast expanding graphite with a fire classification of up to 240 minutes for both integrity and insulation. It holds a full European Technical Assessment ETA/17/0695 and is certified for PVC-U, PVC-C, PE, LDPE, MDPE, HDPE, ABS, SAN+PVC and PP pipes plus many different kinds of cables up to a certain diameter.

sign and display grapHiCs specialist, Signbox is looking back at a successful 2017 after it picked up three major awards and two commendations throughout the year. The Egham-based company won the Architectural Sign of the Year Award and the inaugural Décor Award at The British Sign Awards, as well as a FESPA Gold Award in the Decals and Printed Labels category at the FESPA awards earlier in the year. The British Sign Awards, acknowledging the outstanding work of sign businesses in the UK, recognised Signbox’s work on the Dakota building in Weybridge, Surrey in the Architectural Sign of Year category. As part of a major renovation, Signbox provided elegant and eco-friendly signage to reflect the building’s modern, contemporary feel and the local area’s aviation heritage. This included the creation and installation of an LED illuminated skyline sign, a glazed entrance foyer sign, an external ground level sign and wayfinding monoliths. The Décor Award recognised Signbox’s work at the new London office of Greece’s Alpha Bank in central London. Alongside the architects, Signbox helped to deliver a range of detailed environmental

graphics, manifestations and bespoke signage in muted taupes and bronzes that befitted Alpha Bank’s Greek heritage. Signbox’s work on the iconic illuminated, rotating New Scotland Yard sign was also ‘highly commended’ in the Architectural Signage of the Year and the Illuminated Sign of the Year categories. Earlier in the year, at the FESPA Awards, Signbox brought home a gold award in the Decals and Printed Labels category for its work last year at the London headquarters of book publisher, Hachette UK. In collaboration with the Graphics History Company, Signbox delivered a mural made up of thousands of iconic author names, forming a “river of authors” into a flowing representation of the River Thames. “This year has been one that Signbox can look back on with great pride,” says Signbox Managing Director Mark Bartlett. “To have received awards and commendations for four projects is fantastic and is true testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.” Want to put our award-winning skills to work on your project in 2018? Patel taylor UnlockS a hIStorIc area oF waPPIng

An area of London that has been closed off for more than two centuries is getting a new lease of life. Patel Taylor, on behalf of St George, is transforming London Dock in Wapping into a mixed-use development that combines its rich site history with contemporary dockside living, creating new links and views through the site. The architect developed the masterplan for the 6.5 hectare site and is designing each phase of the project, the first of which is now taking shape. Most recently home to publishing behemoth News International, the 450 metre long site dates back to 1805 when the London Docks were opened. The first route of access was via maritime transportations from the Thames in Shadwell. Since goods are no longer transported into the city via waterways, St Katharine’s Dock and Tobacco Dock have evolved into residential neighbourhoods, commercial offices and an entertainment venue over the past two hundred years. London Dock’s transformation will unite the key docks, waterways and basins within Wapping.

Archetech - Page 122

Prior to this, the area was used as market gardens. This historical aspect, combined with the form of the docks, has informed Patel Taylor’s design. The major part of the site consists of C-shaped courtyard buildings with water gardens set within, facing toward the water. The landscaped strips between the buildings are modelled on the market gardens era. Both above and below these buildings are two new pedestrian walkways connecting to key streets within Wapping. In addition, the practice negotiated with Historic England to create three new public access routes through the retained buildings on the northern edge of the site. ‘In this way we have greatly increased the permeability of the site, allowing public and residents to see through it, and providing important connectivity,’ said Andrew Taylor, founding director of Patel Taylor. In addition, the development has a major new public square, Gauging Square, to the west, designed to draw the public into the

Patel Taylor has designed the buildings with a consistent palette of materials throughout, to provide unity, yet enough variation to ensure that there are areas of different character. The main material used is precast concrete, but all the buildings have brick bases, echoing the

space. The square will be a new destination for public assembly and will be the focal point of the development. At the eastern end of the development is the Market Square, similar in size and orientation but with a very different character, with its central space adorned by ranks of mature trees. When complete, London Dock will include 1800 homes, 180,000 square feet of commercial space, and a secondary school. The tallest building, fronting onto Gauging Square, is 26 storeys, with the remainder of the buildings standing at between eight and 19 storeys high.

solid warehouse tradition of the site. The tallest structure has the largest proportion of glazing, contrasting with the solid forms of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, both of which can be seen from the site. A new corner building, Emery Wharf, at the entrance to the site, uses glazed bricks, again a reference to the past, when many corner buildings employed these bricks to emphasise their significance. The landscaped Market Gardens, set between the buildings, descend by 1.5m from top to bottom, reflecting the changing levels on the site. They will contain plants from around the world, in particular those that were brought back during the active period of the docks. This was largely accidental – soil was used as ballast and some of the plants established themselves in the UK.

names of the imports once stored in the warehouses, and invites the community to engage with the heritage of this historic gateway to London.

Deepening the focus of the design on the public realm, artist Gordon Young has designed a unique public installation in the form of a text trail set into a Mondrian-like pattern, which picks up on the

Clipper Wharf, Admiral Wharf and Alexander Wharf have welcomed the first residents, setting the tone for the development with intelligent use of materials and exceptionally high quality of design and delivery. The entire area around Gauging Square is now taking shape, creating a benchmark for the entire project. As London Dock opens up for the first time in more than two centuries, it will become a new home and public hub for residents and the surrounding neighbourhood in east London.

Replacement Balustrade

A great many character or period properties have stone balustrade incorporated into their design. These balustrades make a large visual impact, but they also have a practical purpose as barriers and screens.

A common cause for the demise of a balustrade is the presence of water. Many original balustrades were made from artificial stonework such as Roman Cement, Concrete and Stucco. These were often reinforced with iron or mild steel bars which rust and expand when exposed to water over a long period.

TURN THE ROOM YOU HAVE INTO THE SPACE YOU NEED “Multispace Systems have been successfully supplying award winning Folding Partitions and Movable Walls for 10 years. We assist Architects, Interior Designers and End Users to realise their ideas. We also offer Specialist Technical advice on Nationwide projects.” Visit our website on www.multispacesystems.co.uk. Contact us on 01262 340149 or email info@multispacesystems.co.uk

Other balustrades were made of natural stone such as Portland Stone or Bath Stone. While these types of balustrade do not suffer from ‘blown’ reinforcing, they do have a finite life span and the surface of stonework will often delaminate or form powdery patches.

First house in Scotland fitted with groundbreaking “Heating with Ice” Technology Stommel Haus, premium manufacturer of offsite manufactured homes in Germany, equips a private dwelling in Aberdeenshire with ground breaking “Heating with Ice” technology by Viessmann.

Archetech - Page 18 128

The innovative ice store system is installed in a very energy efficient eco timber house from Stommel Haus becoming the first of its kind in Scotland. This ground breaking technology recovers energy from only renewable sources, such as the sun, the ambient heat and the soil, to heat and cool a building and provides hot water for the house. Drawing energy from ice to heat or cool a house sounds a little bit like science fiction, but over the past 4 years Stommel Haus already installed many such systems in their eco houses in Germany. The ice storage system which consists of an underground water tank, solar thermal panels and a state of the art heat pump supplies energy to the heat pump which generates the hot water and the heat for the under-floor heating on all storeys of the house. It also cools the house in summer! The heat pump extracts energy from the water stored in the ice storage tank which is installed under ground. The energy

used to provide the heat slowly turns the water in the underground tank to ice. Additional energy is obtained from the freezing process of the water - therefore the term “ice store”. Freezing is an exothermic process, i.e. as liquid water changes to solid ice, crystallisation energy (latent heat) is released. This latent heat is retained in the ice store system. A heat source management system integrated in the heat pump draws

energy from either the ice store or solar thermal panels on the roof. The ice store also draws energy from the surrounding ground to regenerate heat. In summer the ice store can be used to provide natural cooling: At the end of the heating season, the water in the store is turned to ice. The ambient summer heat around the store, the solar thermal energy and heat which is drawn from the system via an extraction heat exchanger melt the ice in the ice store and cools the heating circuit of the house.

as one Consistent entity, the Sports Centre pulls together a large number of elements from different briefs, i.e. an alreadyexisting gymnasium, swimming pool and indoor tennis courts with the creation of a multi-purpose arena, a boxing hall, a bodybuilding hall, two dojos, a football pitch with stands, outdoor tennis courts and a clubhouse. The new building fits in as a unique wing to the west of the existing L-shaped buildings, unifying the whole in a U configuration. This creates an inner courtyard, a genuine place to breathe between buildings and a generator of light that unifies all access points.

invasive creepers grow up the trellises to the first floor without causing harm to the building in front of which they stand. A hanging timber centre The wooden centre stands on the green base, two constituent floors of the building (reception, offices and sports rooms) totally clad in timber. The facades are livened up by large timber spines that give rhythm to the cladding’s shadows and extra thickness. They are generously glassed on the two best orientations favourable for practicing sport, i.e. the north and northeast, allowing athletes to enjoy a bright, open atmosphere that gives onto the park.

The project is comprised of the three following strong elements: • An entrance hall serving as the connecting point between the sports facilities; this entrance hall is highlighted by a broad horizontal line in continuity with the new building so as the have all the buildings revolve around each other and unify the two halls leading to the sports facilities • A green base like a vegetal hedge that breaks up and lightens the building as a continuation of Bettencourt Park • A two-floor hanging timber building that contains the sports halls and stands on the green base like lanterns.

An open, bright reception area With its generously glassed-in facade and roof, the central entrance hall lets in natural light to the core of the Sports Centre. Being walk-through, it offers an uninterrupted view of the football pitch,

the new building is located in the extension to the park that occupies the north portion of the plot

Page 131 - Archetech

A green base extension of the park The new building is located in the extension to the park that occupies the north portion of the plot. Like an extension of this park, the ground floor is composed of an anti-graffiti glazed concrete facade doubled by a hedge of climbing plants, 50 cm thick at a height that corresponds to that of the entrance hall. This green base divides the building in two and lightens it. Composed of plants requiring little maintenance, it isn’t a plant wall but a hedge growing from the ground. The non-

and its double height (nearly 8 m) creates an immediate rapport with the bar on the first floor. The caretaker’s lodge, located very near the entrance, and a wide reception desk in the hall make it possible to monitor the access points and guide visitors. On the ground floor the hall gives access to the bodybuilding room, toilets, offices and premises for sports associations. With the lift and central staircase, it links all the sports rooms located on the upper floors.

Archetech - Page 132

The reception, cafeteria and bar areas at the core of this atrium are organised directly with 3 briefs for the sale of drinks and snacks via a counter and three-directional glass partitions: • towards the hall on the mezzanine • towards the stands of the football pitch • towards the terrace, an extension of the swimming pool’s sun deck. The stands are arranged so as to allow a wide, same-level platform with the bar, making it possible to watch matches with a panoramic view from inside. A unique orientation instilling warmth in the sports halls Located on the first and second floors, the sports halls all enjoy north and north-east exposure for a homogenous, soft light. The dojos are lined with cushioned walls. The other halls are lined with head-high acoustic panels. The halls are built with pre-poured concrete slabs providing the

sports areas with handsome volumes without intervening pillars. The ceilings are offset, enabling the insertion of light fixtures and acoustic panels between the slabs. Each hall has two exits and areas for changing rooms and storage space. generous, pleasant space in the annexes The changing rooms located on all floors of the Sports Centre are walk-through and adhere to the street-shoe/sport-shoe concept, i.e. people enter the changing rooms with dirty shoes and emerge in the sports halls with clean shoes. The changing rooms are often grouped by two to limit the need for service ducts and to pool the wet areas (showers, toilets, etc.). The hallway leading to the sports halls is also located on the facade side, giving rise to well-lit, friendly foot traffic and a panoramic view of the outdoor sports fixtures. The bodybuilding gym has direct access to the entrance hall and is wide open to the outside. It has a glass wall onto a small patio created along the swimming pool facade by a hedge that reproduces the base principle of the Sports Centre. It forms a kind of landscape in front of the bodybuilding room. a plethora of outdoor activities The football pitch has been laid over a previous one, making it possible to conserve part of its original shape whilst enlarging it. It also made it possible to place the stands up against the building.

Three new tennis courts have been placed at the end of the plot with the best possible sun exposure for play. The clubhouse is located near these new courts so as to create a tennis hub. A path enabling access for people with special needs makes it possible to reach the already existing indoor tennis courts via a landscaped passageway. The sun deck has direct access from the swimming pool and on a level with the door to the pool. It faces directly south to take full advantage of the sun. A space for snacks is located closely nearby on the terrace outside the bar-cafeteria.

The roof over the stands is composed of a light frame supporting a metal cover with timber cladding on the under side. Although the stands’ 300-seat capacity abuts against the Sports Centre’s building, it is entirely independent in its use. There are 4 access points, three of which are free-standing: • a central access point from the pitch • two access points on either end of the stands for independent use • and access directly into the entrance hall that can be opened or closed depending on needs The running track has been located between the football pitch and the tennis courts, enabling the separation of the two areas and preferential access.

Page 133 - Archetech

Complementarity between the materials and the technical choices The Sports Centre marries the following: • textured and anti-graffiti-treated concrete with indoor insulation on the ground floor • trellised concrete with occasional plantlife • stained and saturated Scots pine cladding with exterior insulation on the upper floors construction systems: • Foundations of piles and structural slabs • Base and superstructure in concrete • A system of floor slab shuttering (prestressed slabs) • An insulated envelope, woodwork with thermal bridge breaks • Northeastern exposure and natural lighting favoured, with a goal of the level P equivalent of the HQE standard • Cogeneration gas boiler • Radiant panel heaters in the sport halls • Floor heating in the entrance hall, passageways and changing rooms • Overall double-flow ventilation • Quality artificial light: a uniformity coefficient of 0.7 • green roof technical sheet The Sports Centre combines a wide variety of elements from different briefs, i.e. already existent gyms, swimming pool and indoor tennis courts with new all-purpose halls, a boxing gym, a bodybuilding gym, two dojos, a football pitch with stands, outdoor tennis courts and a clubhouse. The new building is located to the west of existing buildings, uniting the whole with an entrance hall that acts as a bridge to all the facilities. A ground-floor green base supports a “wooden house” that contains the sports halls. Bathed in natural light the entire building offers warm and functional spaces. WOKA LAMPS VIENNA is a Viennabased Manufacturer of Iconic 20th Century Lighting Design. Lovers of iconic lamps from the early 20th century were for decades deprived of the possibility of owning some of the most striking pieces by the Wiener Werkstätte and the Bauhaus, which had long fallen out of production. The designers whose work WOKA is licensed to produce read like a who’s who of the Vienna design pantheon. In addition to Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, the manufacturer has reissued striking table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps, as well as chandelier pieces, by the likes of Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Carl Witzmann. EGGER’s flagship flooring product, EGGER Protect, is helping UK housebuilders tackle on-site issues that can cause serious delays. The current demand on building sites, due to the drive by UK Government to build 200,000 homes by 2020, has created opportunities but also issues for housebuilders.

Sébastien Carré and Stéphane Gérard are the creators of Billots de Sologne. Coming from a joinery company established in 1921 in the heart of the Sologne region, they are passionate about and have a firm grip on the wood trades and implement a particular kind of «end grain» know-how.

EGGER Protect is the only structural flooring product on the market that can be exposed to the elements for up to 60 days. This takes the pressure of builders dealing with poor weather, material shortages and a lack of skilled tradespeople. In addition to the 60-day protection and a lifetime guarantee, EGGER Protect boards have a hard-wearing, anti-slip surface to aid site safety, they’re quick to install, and can be used with underfloor heating systems and tiles.

This type of assembling, traditionally used in making butcher’s blocks, is given a new lease of life in their hands in order to make tables, work surfaces, counters and other original pieces for indoor use.

the low energy buildings you’ve always wanted… IntrIgUeD by the claImS oF thIS ‘FUll SerVIce’ comPany we DecIDeD to InVeStIgate theIr aPProach a lIttle more. value engineering: First, we wanted to know what was meant by ‘Value Engineering’ (VE). Professor Dr. Michael Benfield, their CEO, explained: “By focusing on the various ‘functions’ of a client’s building and its components, we aim to identify and remove unnecessary costs while at the same time maintaining - even enhancing - its performance.” Comprehensive Knowledge: This approach blends their extensive and rather unique knowledge of all forms of timber structure, building science, regulations, and state of the art products with individual client’s design concepts. “For us, value engineering starts with environmental planning and regulatory impositions as part of our analytical and technical design processes.” he explained. “These feed our drive for, and commitment to, sustainable development through into waste reduction, recycling and lean manufacture. It embraces a ‘Pride in the Job’ and a ‘Right First Time’ mentality that is applied to all our Design & Build (D&B) operations.”

FoCus on end user: Paying attention to end user demands is central to Benfield ATT’s approach (the ATT stands for Advanced Timber Technologies, by the way). They believe it enables them to deliver highly effective, quality buildings for projects large & small. This includes providing solutions for difficult to develop sites, like soft ground, steeply sloping land and potential flood plain areas. produCt seleCtion: Self-evidently, to value engineer design & build solutions, the selection of the most appropriate products needs the services and methods used to be an integral part of the process. Working closely with architects, building designers, engineers and quantity surveyors, Benfield ATT helps select and specify those which are most functionally appropriate and cost effective. In turn this encourages the delivery of high quality products to be protected, and results in saving time for on-site build operations. All of this, they claim, reduces costs, enhances client’s projects and helps to make them one of the most competitive full service timber engineering design and build firms in the UK. FabriC First: In the current business climate it is perhaps not surprising to find Efficiency, Performance & Cost Effectiveness

to be included in their key current considerations. This is most clearly evidenced in their ‘Fabric First” approach to designing really effective building envelopes. “There is a crucial need to deliver highly energy efficient structures with optimum levels of insulation, minimal thermal transmission and appropriate airtightness for floors, walls, roofs, windows and doors.” explains Prof Benfield. Unsurprising, therefore, that in their drive toward Zero Carbon and minimal heating requirements, they offer factory Insulated Panels, SIP’s, Green Oak, Post & Beam, Glulam and Hybrid structures all orientated to achieve what was Code for Sustainable Homes levels 4, 5, 6 and Passivhaus Standards. speCialist builders’ merChants: Potentially, the procurement of design specific components can create unforeseen difficulties, for example locating the source of supplies, avoiding delays in delivery lead times, quality assurance, and securing ‘best value’ products and terms. Here Benfield ATT’s long established connections, access and volume buying capabilities as manufacturers and selective builder’s merchants, enables them to secure and supply such requirements in the most timely and competitive manner as part of their value engineered, design & build methodology. Catalysts For Quality: “We believe that our approach to helping you create the ‘Low Energy Buildings you’ve always dreamed of …’ is distinctly different” says Benfield. “We welcome collaboration with other construction professionals in our drive to achieve this.” In doing so, his company aims to help enhance the professional construction team of architects, other designers, engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, house-builders, developers, et al, facilitating the delivery of the high quality buildings they and their clients both need and want. And, if end user clients like self-builders and home improvers lack any of these skills, to be the catalyst drawing in those that are most appropriate for each individual project. To compliment this they offer a selective part or full project management service. proFessional partnerships: While they are happy to engage in ‘one off’ projects, Benfield ATT see the greatest benefits to industry and end user occupiers as coming from the establishment of long term ‘partnering’ style arrangements with other construction professionals. This can include Joint Venture arrangements for specific developments, which may be of interest to land owners and those who wish to fund, say, housing schemes, but lack the technical knowledge and industry experience necessary to make them successful. In such cases they believe that their comprehensive team approach can be highly valuable.
