private gym and spa, a business lounge and an entertainment suite with screening room, games room, private dining room and private rooftop gardens.
Jonathan Tuckey Design is responsible for the interior architecture of the apartments, responding to both the 19th century industrial structures and WilkinsonEyre’s dramatic, contemporary architectural insertions. Coupled with the neighbouring Gasholders Park, Gasholders London is a dynamic juxtaposition between old and new, offering unique spaces for both residents and visitors to the area to enjoy. Located beside the historic Regent’s Canal, the triplet of cast iron gasholder guide frames have long been unique landmarks for visitors to King’s Cross. WikinsonEyre has carefully and considerately balanced functionality and modernisation with the industrial character of the gasholders. Retaining its industrial aesthetic the gasholders guide frames, and their 123 columns which date back to the 1860s, have been painstakingly restored by hand at specialist engineering works in Shepley, Yorkshire, North England. Each residential building is independently supported and is set back from the guide structures. Celebrating craftsmanship their concept has created an equilibrium between the refurbished triplet of Grade II-listed cast iron gasholder guide frames and contemporary architecture that is deserving of such a unique heritage. The imaginative design and circular nature of the gasholders results in apartments that are laid out to take advantage of natural daylight and expansive views – while the central atriums bring light into the heart of the structures. Jonathan Tuckey Design, which is responsible for the interiors of the apartments, has been able to balance both the industrial the feel of the structures and WilkinsonEyre’s contemporary insertions. Bold, comfortable and elegantly masculine the studio draws from building context, art and fashion to create a refined, sophisticated, welcoming and effortless scheme.

Landscape designs for the residents’ roof garden, central courtyard and planted atriums have been created by RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold-medal winning landscape architecture practice, Dan Pearson Studio. The diverse mix of herbaceous perennials, architectural grasses and bulbs mimics the mood of a meow and offers year-round interest from vivid colours to striking seed head. Located in the heart of King’s Cross, Gasholders London is located in one of the capital’s best connected areas for local and international travel, with the world’s tops schools on its doorstep. The adjacent Heatherwick Studio-designed 100,000 sq ft shopping and restaurant district, Coal Drops Yard, is a first for London and sees an innovative retail experience arrive in the heart of King’s Cross. Home to over 50 stores, restaurants and cafes the project brings together a neighbourhood of the best names in fashion, food and beyond in what is an imaginative repurposing of the area’s Victorian heritage. HERE’S HOW EDGE FINISHING PROFILES SOLVE COMMON PROBLEMS In the design of a tile or stone installation, there are a number of different finishing situations that can present themselves. Here, Schlüter-Systems highlights just a few of the frequently encountered problems that profiles within its range of over 5,000 different options can solve.
Schlüter-SCHIENE
Archetech - Page 10
Problem: Finishing tile against floor coverings of the same height Solution: Schlüter-SCHIENE SCHIENE, the original finishing threshold strip, neatly finishes tile and stone coverings against adjacent floor coverings of the same height as well as protecting their outer edges. Problem: Finishing tile against floor coverings of a different height Solution: Schlüter-RENO RENO profiles create a smooth transition between adjoining floor coverings of different heights, and thus feature small slopes (some fixed and some variable) Problem: Creating durable and slip-resistant stair nosing Solution: Schlüter-TREP The edges of stairs are exposed to heavy mechanical stresses and represent a high risk for injuries. Because of their slip-resistant design and excellent visibility, TREP profiles improve safety and offer DDA compliance and protection.

Schlüter-JOLLY
Problem: Attaching shower screens without compromising waterproofing measures Solution: Schlüter-DECO-SG Using screws to mechanically attach shower screens means that waterproofing is punctured and needs to be resealed. The DECO-SG profile allows for screw-free installation of shower screens, featuring an anchoring leg that is bedded into the tile adhesive and a U-shaped recess into which the glass is inserted. Problem: Finishing wall corners Solution: Schlüter-JOLLY, -RONDEC, -QUADEC & -FINEC JOLLY, RONDEC, QUADEC and FINEC create a highly durable and decorative finishing for wall coverings and skirtings made of tile and natural stone. Each of the aforementioned profiles provides a different style of finishing – square, rounded, cubic and slim-line edge protection respectively.
Schlüter-FINEC
Schlüter-QUADEC
Problem: Blending edge protection with your chosen tile or stone Solution: Schlüter-TRENDLINE The TRENDLINE range of textured coatings for wall profiles was launched in 2016, carrying a variety of colour options, ranging from the purest ivory right through to richly toned dark anthracite. All finishes within the range are available across JOLLY, RONDEC, QUADEC and FINEC profiles and selected finishes can also be applied to the internal wall corner profile, Schlüter-DILEX-AHK. Problem: Achieving neat skirting finishes Solution: Schlüter-DESIGNBASE DESIGNBASE offers a selection of decorative skirting profiles to satisfy a number of requirements. These range from DESIGNBASESL, for no-frills finishing, through to DESIGNBASE-CQ, which allows cables to be hidden within it, and DESIGNBASE-QD, which can be combined with LIPROTEC LED strips to provide lit skirting and wall border detailing.
Schlüter-Systems Ltd offers a range of Lunch and Learn sessions where attendees can explore the professional uses and implications of particular ranges of profiles and other finishing products. For more information on individual sessions or to book, visit www.schluterspecifier.co.uk.

THE WHERE THE WHAT AND THE HOW OF SELECTING STONE... Selecting the right stone for your project requires some careful consideration of the where, the what and the how. Given the changing political landscape, you may also want to consider UK quarried stone ahead of imported stone. Unless they are in stock in the UK you might find your stone at the back of a very long queue of lorries in Calais. There are a great many UK sandstones, slates and limestones from which to choose. Less granites and no marbles, unfortunately. The Stone Federation of Great Britain represent many quarries through their quarry forum and have a wealth of knowledge on types and locations. As does The Stone Specifiers Source Book, also produced by the Stone Federation.
Archetech - Page 12
Marble, granite limestone, slate, basalt, sandstone, quartzite – there is a vast pallet of natural stones from which to select the right stone for your project, large or small. Colours are a good starting point, but you will definitely want to consider how the chosen material is likely to perform in the location. For instance, bathrooms need to be beautiful, functional and easy to maintain. Most Limestone and Marble is formed with a high proportion of calcium carbonate, which is soluble. It doesn’t mean the stone will dissolve underwater, but some will be more susceptible to water staining. If water softeners are being added to filtration systems, it is worth checking if the contents will affect the stones surface and increase limescale build-up or contribute to deterioration of the stone surface.
Stone floors in receptions and kitchens should be hard wearing and relatively easy to maintain, providing you use the correct cleaning regime. I know of a stone cleaning company to be found regularly in the foyers of some of the top hotels in London at 4am in the morning. Almost silently, machine cleaning the floors to their original condition, some weekly, some fortnightly, all with excellent results. There are many occasions where I am asked to visit “problem” floors to report to the client on the condition and why their floor looks so poor after a relatively short life span. Invariably, amongst other issues, the cleaning regime leaves much to be desired. The 4 am cleaning shift is often a man with a bucket full of dirty water and an old mop. This only serves to move dirt around the floor rather then remove it. Use pH neutral cleaners and make sure they are suitable for stone. Clean regularly and aim to have surfaces professionally cleaned at least every 18 months. Removing dirt and any limescale build-up will keep the stone fresh and prevent long term damage. Sealing stone is not really sealing. It is not like a varnish for wood. The real name is impregnator. These come in two types – water based or solvent based. The solvent based impregnators last longer but are less environmentally friendly. The impregnator sits below the surface and should prevent deep staining. You still need to wipe spillages off the surface as quickly as possible – particularly wine and acidic liquids – but it does help to provide a barrier against deep staining. Other than cleaning, give careful consideration to the type of stone and where it is being used. There are a couple of key areas to investigate for your chosen stone.
Marble quarries above Carrara, Italy.
The surface finish will affect the slip resistance test results – a sandblasted face presenting the least potential for slip and a highly polished floor the most. If there is heavy footfall on the floor, even if it begins as honed, it may end up as polished with time and footfall. Therefore, abrasion resistance test results will help to understand the likely wear capability of the floor. Results are expressed in mm and BRE guidelines suggest anything under 23mm of wear is suitable for intensive use, 23 to 30 medium use, 30 and above domestic use. You will need to understand the predicted footfall to decide which category your floor falls into. Floor loading is another factor to consider. Floors that are expected to carry the weight of cars, for instance, will require a stone with a high flexural strength and possibly thicker than you would have expected, to carry the additional load, however infrequent. Flexural strength and slip resistance results can be found on the CE marking certificate, which should be obtained from the supplier of the stone. As long as we are in the EU it is their responsibility to provide this to the buyer. Abrasion resistance tests do not have to be declared on the CE certificate for external or internal floors, but I would suggest these are checked before specifying the stone. Book matched shower wall. SLIP AND ABRASION RESISTANCE VALUES. Slip resistance tests were originally developed as a rubber pendulum test by the Greater London Council, published in 1971. Today, a 4S pendulum test is recommended, with a 96 hardness rubber to simulate ordinary pedestrian foot traffic for public areas and 55 hardness rubber to simulate bare foot traffic - more suitable for pool surrounds and wet bathroom floors. The HSE expect a minimum value of 36 in the wet or dry, as I suspect will you or your client’s insurance company. There are coatings on the market that claim to improve a stone floors slip resistance. But always check the on-going maintenance requirements, the costs and any warranty offered.
Then there is underfloor heating, sub floor preparation, waterproofing and installing the stone…….. Stone is a fantastic product and elevates design to a luxury level. Just make sure you do your homework on the where the what and the how. Robert Merry is a member of the Technical Committee of the Stone Federation of Great Britain. His company, The Stone Consultants, are an independent stone consultancy who offer advice and guidance on stone related issues to the construction industry including technical specifications and expert witness. www.stoneconsultants.co.uk M:07771997621 E:info@stoneconsultants.co.uk

THROW OUT THAT OLD EXTRACTOR - AND BRING IN A BERBEL Steve and Jeanette Flanagan could not see the back of their old kitchen extractor quick enough. “It just didn’t work, and it was impossible to clean,” said Steve. “We were planning a new kitchen and decided to do without one - it just wasn’t worth it.” The Flanagans had the same problem faced by so many long-suffering users of traditional kitchen hoods: steel mesh fat filters long gummed up with cooking residues, resistant to even the most persistent of dishwashers automated or human - and thus unable to produce clean and healthy recirculated air.
A carbon-filled filter, renewable every two or three years, does the same with cooking smells - a godsend for many modern, open-plan homes.
Ergoline 2 kitchen head space hood from Berbel
Users had to constantly breathe in unfiltered air and remove a thin fatty coating covering every conceivable kitchen surface - the very issues extractors are designed to prevent.
Archetech - Page 14
Then one day they met two fellow dog-walkers who just happened to run Casalife, a business designing and selling German kitchens and including a completely different method of air extraction. It was based just two miles away. Steve said they were interested and a few days later invited the company’s husband and wife team, Jacqueline and Karl, round to talk kitchens. What attracted the Flanagans was Casalife’s unique line in kitchen hoods produced by the German manufacturer, Berbel - the only products on the market with no fat filters. Instead, they use a patented centrifugal force system to separate off 97% of fat, oil and steam into an internal, removable tray that can be easily wiped clean.
In fact, analysis by the independent German product testing lab, SLG, shows Berbel hood fat extraction levels remained consistently high at between 85-89% throughout 30-, 60-, 90- and 120-minute periods, whereas conventional filter-led models only reached 63% across 30 minutes and plunged to just over 35% across 120 minutes.
For Berbel, performance also goes hand in hand with design. The company, which had already won a dozen international design awards since 2010, most recently clinched the prestigious international 2019 ‘Best of the Best’ Red Dot Design award for its Skyline Frame ceiling lift hood (see photo). It was d escribed by judges as “a fascinating new aesthetic for the kitchen. Its clear geometric lines give it the appearance of an object floating in mid-air… it fits seamlessly into almost any given kitchen interior”. Skyline is just one of Berbel’s 19 extractor lines that also include wall-mounted models, headroom hoods (flueless and tilted to give an unhindered view of the hob), table lift hoods - housed below the surface until needed, built-in hoods (fixed or lift design) and - particularly for smaller kitchens - hobs with a built-in extractor fan that sucks air downwards. What did the Flanagans decide? “We changed our minds about extractors!” says Steve. “We signed up for a B erbel Ergoline 2 extractor [see pic] and now a year later admit we could not live without it! ...” www.casalife.uk
COOKER HOODS THAT REALLY WORK Q: How pure is the air in your kitchen? A: All too often the steel fat filters used in traditional air extractors become clogged up with material, are forever difficult to clean and lead to unhealthy, stale air and a thin film of fat on every surface …
… BUT THERE IS A SOLUTION! German kitchen hood maker Berbel has developed a unique and patented extraction method based on centrifugal force - and no steel mesh filters! Berbel produces the only devices on the market to suck in the contaminated air, spin it and separate off up to 97% of all fat, oil and steam into a removable, easy-to-clean steel tray. At the same time, a high quality, renewable carbon filter snuffs out almost all cooking smells. MULTIPLE DESIGN AWARDS Not only do Berbel extractor hoods leave your kitchen fresh and clean, but they have also won 12 international design awards since 2010, plus most recently the 2019 international Best of the Best Red Dot design award (see Skyline Frame ceiling hood, main pic). Whisper-quiet and eco-sensitive, Berbel hoods are powered by fan motors that use 62% less electricity than traditional motors. Berbel hoods come in 19 different styles and a wide choice of materials, shapes, colours and sizes to fit any kitchen space from small galleys to large open-plan designs.

GRAFF®’S NEW VINTAGE COLLECTION AVAILABLE IN ARRAY OF STUNNING FINISHES GRAFF®, manufacturer of contemporary precision-engineered kitchen and bath products, presents its latest collection – Vintage -in the Brushed Nickel finish. The collection emulates the best of the industrial design paradigm, perfectly suited to outfit metropolitan environments known for their loft style. The Vintage Collection draws inspiration from the design of classic fire hose nozzles, pairing a modern spout with bold handles. Each element, from the rounded brim at the spout’s top to the undulating handles complete with carefully designed cut outs, resembles the traditional forms of the fire house featured in the historic Chicago Fire Department logo. The Vintage Collection enriches bathroom suites through its elevated design. GRAFF’s G+Design Studio honed-in on the collection’s handle design to create a beautiful, practical, and ergonomic solution that facilitates easy use. The collection offers a choice of circular or linear lever handles (with a knurled accent for added allure) for deck-mounted, wall-mounted or freestanding installations. The two-hole and single-lever faucets feature an internal progressive cartridge that makes it possible to regulate water temperature while maintaining constant pressure. This system reduces hot water waste as a result. The progressive cartridge offers the possibility for a cleaner and more engaging design: the traditional cap is not necessary for the rotation of the handle; the tap develops into a unique silhouette, without the conventional cut on the back of the body.

RE-CLAIMED, RE-ENGINEERED RECYCLED PAINT CREATES CIRCULAR ECONOMY Dulux Trade becomes first major UK paint brand to launch recycled paint in partnership with Veolia UK. As part of its ongoing commitment to reducing the impact of paint on the environment, experts at Dulux Trade with Veolia have created a ground-breaking matt emulsion made from 35 per cent recycled paint. The market leaders have developed Evolve Matt, a revolutionary product made from the leftover paint that remains in tins after use, in a bid to reduce the amount of unwanted paint going to waste. To create Dulux Trade Evolve, the brand has partnered with resource management experts Veolia, to extract and reprocess unused white paint from tins at its recycling centres. In doing so, Dulux Trade has reduced the carbon footprint of each litre of Evolve paint produced by more than 10 per cent*, helping paint specifications to hit sustainability targets. Veolia collects paint deposited by residents at their household waste recycling centres and takes it to its remanufacturing plant. The paint is refined and filtered before being transported to a manufacturing facility where it is combined with new paint, reengineered and tested extensively, ensuring that every tin on sale maintains the high standards expected of Dulux Trade.
Paul Murgett, Sustainability Manager at Dulux Trade, said: “With over 700 million litres of paint being sold every year**, millions of litres of unused paint are put into landfill or incinerated. “Evolve, developed as a result of years of investment, hard work and commitment to improve our sustainable offering, is the first step towards reducing this quantity.” Dulux Trade Evolve Matt has been five years in the making and not only underwent rigorous testing by research and development experts, but it was also blind tested by painting contractors, as well as successful small scale trials with the Coop and Waitrose & Partners, among others. The launch of this new paint is just one step on a journey Dulux Trade is taking towards meeting sustainability targets and creating a circular economy for paint.

ASSA ABLOY PROJECT SPECIFICATION GROUP ‘SHREDS’ TIME AND COSTS FOR COLLADOCOLLINS ARCHITECTS ASSA ABLOY
ASSA ABLOY Project Specification Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, has partnered with ColladoCollins Architects to leverage the benefits of its Openings Studio™ BIM software to make significant time and cost savings on the former Shredded Wheat factory project.
Archetech - Page 20
The project, a thriving new commercial and residential development based in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, will consist of over 643 units and more than 7,100 doorsets. Encompassing a sensitive refurbishment of former Shredded Wheat factory buildings, the project is part of a huge development that includes over 1,200 units in total. Using ASSA ABLOY’s Openings Studio™ software, ColladoCollins has been able to save weeks of time and manpower when specifying and managing ironmongery schedules for the project. Openings Studio is a BIM software tool that was developed to significantly improve the process of door scheduling, visualisation and more. Users are able to focus on the design, installation and management of door openings – all within an information-rich environment.
Specifying as many as 7,100 doorsets can be an extremely timeintensive task. Using traditional methods, information would be provided in countless separate schedules and documents, which would require a Revit operator to manually create and update, with someone else to then check for errors. Then, as the project develops, information may become out of date and therefore require individual doors to be flagged up and re-sent for advice. The time and manpower that goes into this process is not only inefficient, but also ineffective, with the prospect of human error still a prominent possibility. For these reasons, ColladoCollins began to work closely with ASSA ABLOY Project Specification Group to integrate Openings Studio with their own Revit model, allowing the firm to be able find all the relevant information and ironmongery schedules in a single place, delivered in one document. Martin Russell, Project Leader at ColladoCollins, comments: “Moving to BIM was a natural progression for us, and as market leaders, ASSA ABLOY was the obvious choice to assist us. “Utilising the advice from Eric Spooner, BIM Manager at ASSA ABLOY, as well as the Openings Studio software itself, we have managed to free up our team from tirelessly working through door hardware schedules. This means we can focus on architecture and aesthetics, knowing the specification and integration of the ironmongery is
in hand and will seamlessly feedback into the project within the allotted timescales. “The information and advice provided by ASSA ABLOY has vastly improved the integration of door hardware within the former Shredded Wheat Factory project. With a project of this size, sharing information can be quite a task – from large file sizes to sourcing relevant information. The prompts from Openings Studio make transforming information clear, concise and generally easy to follow. “At ColladoCollins, we pride ourselves on designing and delivering high quality buildings with a sensitive, sustainable approach, utilising a strong design ethos with a strong technical background whilst understanding the commercial challenges facing our clients. Openings Studio enhances our ability to provide this service and we would seize the opportunity to work with ASSA ABLOY on similar projects in the future.” Eric Spooner, BIM Manager at ASSA ABLOY, adds: “As Openings Studio flags up any queries and automatically updates in live time, it is easy to see any discrepancies and changes within the schedules. By re-sharing the model information, it then also allows us at ASSA ABLOY to view the changes and feedback to architects – allowing us to work in close collaboration at every stage of a project.” www.assaabloy.com

Doors. They open, they close - what else is there to say? Most of the time, we don’t even think about how they move. The options seem limited and obvious. Push or pull, everything happening in a defined arc, swing out, swing in. The only time we are likely to think about how our doors open and close is when the standard options are either impractical or undesirable. What happens, for example, when you have cupboard and cabinet doors in tight spaces and they cannot open fully because other objects block the way? What about cases where, for safety as well as aesthetic reasons, you would like to have doors that can be left open but tucked neatly out of the way, rather than intruding out into the space in front? For decades, Sugatsune has specialised in applying the finest traditions of Japanese precision engineering to solving everyday practical problems like these. From a mechanical point of view, doors swing out and in on a rotational pivot because that is the simplest way to design a hinge. But Sugatsune has never been satisfied with simple. In our view, doors need not be limited to opening with one motion. All you need to do is reimagine how hinges work.

The result of this way of thinking is our premium range of lateral opening door hinges. Developed and honed over a period of years, the range now offers solutions for everything from lightweight bathroom cabinets to full length walk-in wardrobes, providing lateral opening to doors with a maximum load of 5kg all the way up to 90kg.
signed for walk-in closets, office partitions and other full-length doors up to 2.9m in height and weighing up to 90kg, won awards for the way we reengineered the lateral hinge concept to cope with the extra weight. The latest addition to our range, the Lin-X800, applies the same mechanism for use on slightly smaller wardrobe doors.
The key benefit of lateral opening hinges is the space you save. With a smaller opening radius than standard pivot hinges, it means you can enable full opening of cabinets in even the tightest kitchens and bathrooms. With open doors sat flush to the adjacent surface, neatly tucked out of the way, you get better access and less of a risk of bumps and trips. This applies equally to corner configurations as it does to cabinets set next to each other horizontally. With corner cupboards in kitchens, for example, lateral hinges mean you can open both cupboards fully at once.
All of our lateral hinges also deliver exceptional smooth motion and soft close as standard. Our FAD-20 hinge, for example, makes use of a gas spring to minimise resistance when opening and closing, and holds doors firmly in place in open and closed positions. Built-in dampers on all of our lateral hinges ensure the motion of every door is slowed as it closes, minimising the risk of slamming and trapped fingers.
While the core of our range was originally designed for bathroom and kitchen cabinets, we also recognised the benefits of lateral opening for larger cupboard and wardrobe doors - especially in situations where installing tracks for a sliding door is impractical. Our Lin-X1000 model, de-
Finally, while most of our lateral hinges are designed to pull doors open, the MFU1000 offers something different again. Incorporating a track system, the MFU1000 operates with the door pushed inwards and then slid to the side. One intriguing use of this mechanism is its suitability for ‘hidden doors’, as the push operation means you don’t need any handle to pull on.
Sliding doors. Without the tracks. Introducing the Sugatsune LIN-X1000 lateral opening hinge. A new concept for keeping wardrobe doors out of your space.

BESPOKE ADDITION FOR A BUILDING WITH ‘EDGE’ An office and retail development in central London gave GEZE UK some big ideas for a bespoke entrance solution. Four Kingdom Street is the first of two office buildings to be completed at British Land’s canal-side Paddington Central development. The nine-storey re-designed building comprises of more than 145,000 ft of space near to Paddington railway station. With communal roof terraces on all floors, a roof garden with views over Little Venice and sporting facilities, including the highest basketball court in London, it needed a proud entrance to complete an imposing aspect. A tailor-made solution was devised with Focchi S.p.A., a leading company in the curtain walling sector, which was commissioned to execute an industrial aesthetic with city chic, created by architects Allies and Morrison. GEZE UK worked with its German parent company to adapt its TSA 325 NT manual revolving doors to produce two, three-leafed, glass-topped entrances with extra height – the doors are 3.5m high compared to the standard 3m.
Archetech - Page 28
The doors have positioning drives which mean that after someone has walked through them, they continue to rotate until parked with the leaf wings close to the edges of the openings. The parking mechanism is driven by a motor installed beneath the floor. The doors were installed within the line of the building to provide a flush frontage under the overhang of the first floor. Inside, the leaves of the revolving doors are powder coated to match the façade and echo the engineering/transportation elements of the design concept – a subtle nod to the heritage of the site - a former railway goods yard. Between the revolving doors is a pass door powered by GEZE’s Powerturn swing door operator.
This aesthetic was applied inside and out: each elevation features vertical and horizontal aluminium fins of many shapes and sizes which lend a bold aspect to Four Kingdom Street. It incorporates a structural steel frame and rougher, industrial materials, not usually incorporated into commercial offices, which contribute to its personality. Focchi describe it as “an office building with a bit of an edge”. Said Andy Howland, director of sales and marketing for GEZE UK: “Four Kingdom Street presented us with an exacting and challenging brief which required us to be adaptable to meet those needs. We liaised with our parent company in Leonberg to ensure that we could meet the desired spec without compromising the integrity of the products and in doing so were able to deliver a bespoke configuration for this special project.” For more information about GEZE UK’s comprehensive range of automatic and manual door closers call 01543 443000 or visit www.geze.co.uk

THE RISE OF ALUPROF ’IN THE UK’ An interview with Wojciech Brozyna Managing Director of Aluprof UK Limited Established in the UK in 2006, Aluprof has grown in the UK to become one of the major players in the UK facade industry. With so many active facade systems companies operating in the UK, how did Aluprof succeed in taking a sizeable portion of the UK market? Wojciech Brozyna, MD of Aluprof UK, answers some of these questions:
Archetech - Page 30
So why break into the UK market when it was so well-established back in 2006? “In Poland we have always viewed the UK as a challenge for us, we knew that it would not be easy to set up and gain projects from a virtually unknown system such as ours. We had the benefit of logistics behind us, as we were already exporting from Poland to several other European countries and believed we had a good grasp of product delivery, offering an on time and complete order fulfilment. Added to the logistics, we had won several awards for our systems in Poland and believed that our product range could take on any other system currently available in the European market at that time. “The market crash in 2008 possibly helped us grow as fast as we did in the early years as fabricators in the UK looked for alternative systems which were a little more competitively priced. At this time we were
ready with stocked product in Poland and planning two deliveries per week to the UK. As a result specifications were switched to Aluprof, we delivered on our promises and these early adopters of Aluprof systems continue to be valued customers today.” How did you penetrate the UK market in the early days being virtually unknown? “We decided to send a small team over from Poland, which included myself and several other employees who knew our systems very well. We then interviewed and took on a small team of enthusiastic people who could also see the benefits in our systems and services. It is these early members of staff who promoted our systems and helped us gain our first projects. The majority of the original staff are still vital members of our team today. “To create awareness, we joined several associations in the UK and supported their meetings and events. Our approach was quite simple, we believed that our systems could stand up alongside any other system and perform as well, if not better than our competitors. We revealed the credibility of our offer which was enthusiastically accepted in the UK by specifiers and facade companies. The UK has always had a passion for European style systems and we did not disappoint!” How have you kept up with the growth of Aluprof in the UK? “When we were looking at the UK back in 2005, we decided that a central base for our office and warehouse facility would be preferential, so we decided to settle in the Manchester area which gave us close access to all the major conurbations across the British Isles. From our initial offices and warehouse in Norman Road, Altrincham, we moved seven years ago to a new, larger unit at Altrincham Business Park.
“Whilst we do carry some stock material in our Altrincham warehouse, most projects are supplied direct from our huge warehouse facility located in Bielsko-Biała. With just a two day shipping window, we continue to supply complete orders across to the UK on a weekly basis.”
New systems are also in the pipeline, some dedicated to the UK, but you will have to keep an eye out in the media for the launch of these new systems and services. I would say that we continue plan for future growth and strengthen our position as a strong, reliable supplier despite the UK being in uncertain times.
“In order to keep up with the growth and support our customers, four years ago we started to offer fabricated product as well as systems. This has gone down very well with our customers, as it has allowed them to take on larger projects and at the same time eased their own fabrication programming.”
Serving the whole of the UK and Ireland, Aluprof UK’s head office and warehouse facility is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained local companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof’s exacting standards.
What are your future plans for the UK “We have plans to double the offices and warehouse space this year in Altrincham to provide a showroom and media centre for specifiers. Together with this facility we also have an active office and ‘drop-in’ showroom at the Business Design Centre at Islington to support our growing number of specifiers using our systems in the South East. We also regularly interview for new staff as we continue to expand our team.
Further information is available on the company’s website at www.aluprof.co.uk and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof’s UK head offices on +44 (0) 161 941 4005 or from their London office, based at the Business Design Centre, Islington, on +44 (0) 207 288 6415.

Comar FSDX: Superior, stabilised rolling action with the quietest roller in the industry and improved weight bearing capacity means fit-once and reduced call outs. The new outer-frame is one profile and is used for the track and jambs which reduces stock holding. The intelligent design of the profile means the same profile is used for the jambs and the head, providing mitre frame construction and two options for site transport – preassembled or stick using pinned crimped cleats or mechanical cleats. Comar FSDX eXtra - Glazing The view out of the FSDX door offers the homeowner that little bit eXtra. With the slimmest sightlines available of 60mm, the doors maximise daylighting into the home. Maximising glazing without lacking performance the maximum width of the doors has been increased allowing door sets to be over 4M with only 3 doors.
Comar FSDX eXtra Roller The stainless steel dual roller seamlessly integrates with the stainless steel running track, with a stabiliser the wheels always remain in contact with the track, which, means that even if the track is slightly mis-aligned due to building tolerances the smooth rolling action is not hindered. The weight bearing capacity is increased to 120Kg which with the FSDX’s glazing pocket of 62mm triple glazed or acoustic glass can easily be incorporated.
Comar FSDX eXtra - Hinges The new hinge design incorporates a central gasket strip, which actively reduces hinge gasket prep and site installation. Even the roller pillar has been treated with consideration and pre-applied foam pads seal the roller to the door. This increases home-owner satisfaction with a draft-free solution and no call backs for the installer. Adequate sealing between the sliding doors ensures that a long-term solution is guaranteed.

REYNAERS FACILITATES DELIVERY OF A WORLD-FIRST IN DESIGN AT AXIS TOWERS
Archetech - Page 34
Axis Towers is the first facility in the world where two towers turn around their own axis, but stand on the same foundation, separated by multiple expansion joints. Attracting much interest and acclaim from the architectural community, each floor is turned by two degrees around its axis in order to achieve the desired spiral effect. Located in the Vake district of Tbilisi, Georgia, and designed as a multi-functional complex, the ‘White Tower’ (Stone Tower) comprises apartments whilst the Black Tower (Glass Tower) is home to a hotel, offices, a fitness centre with a swimming pool, and a Sky Bar at the very top. The upper floors of the towers offer beautiful views of the entire city and, in particular, the Dynamo Stadium. The towers are equipped with 22 of the fastest elevators in Georgia and the total parking area is equal to the area of four football stadiums. The building’s architecture
is quite complex, and all constructional solutions are designed in such a way as to withstand the heavy winds which typically frequent Tbilisi. The Reynaers Aluminium systems were chosen to be part of the Axis Towers project because of their reliability (there was a request to test 4500 Pa), ergonomics and their aesthetics complementing the overall appearance of the building. The project has fulfilled all the necessary thermal parameters and has been designed to withstand the particular heavy winds unique to Tbilisi. Georgia is a country with medium seismic activity resulting in Axis Towers having to tackle a complex array of design and structural challenges including applying significant measures to attain shock wave resistance. Thanks to the necessary gaps between the doubleglazed windows and aluminium profiles of the Reynaers systems, Axis Towers were able to achieve the required high level of the indicator.
The project also efficiently projects daylight transmission and noise reduction to a high standard thanks to the innovative and versatile use of Reynaers Aluminium systems. Opening sashes of large sizes were used, alongside doors that were more than 3.5m in height and greater than 2m in width. Constructions of non-standard height and width were also applied, including the unique implementation of the CP 155-LS slide system built into the CW 50 system - the first time this has ever officially been incorporated. The CW 50 faรงade system with embedded CW insert structural doors was also used, with reinforced hardware of the American manufacturer. In addition, Reynaers Aluminium sliding systems CP 155-LS and CP 68, windowdoor system CS 77 (windows, doors of internal and external opening) were installed. The standout project is the largest of its kind for Reynaers Aluminum in Georgia today and is a fantastic example of what its systems can help developers achieve. A showcase of the Axis Towers project is available here: www.reynaers.co.uk/en-UK/ inspiration/aluminium-projectreferences/axis-towers. WARMER AND QUIETER OFFICES FOR THE MASTER AND STAFF 74 Trumpington Street has been upgraded with curved on plan and standard secondary glazing to create quieter and warmer office environments, in line with the College’s overall sustainability plan. In an effort to keep attracting the best scholarly minds and providing the best environments to nurture their excellence, a vision for enhanced learning spaces on the South Side of Mill Lane has been created. One of which is the Grade II Listed Kenmare House designed and built by James Essex c.1760, a prolific constructor in Cambridge, with many of his buildings now making up the University’s Estate. Pleasance Hookham and Nix put the architectural plans together of how the buildings would be reconfigured, to house the Master, Finance, Human Resources and International Programmes Teams and Fellows accommodation. Due to its Listing, the original single pane windows had to be retained, so a solution to combat the noise ingress and thermal inefficiencies had to be sought. Selectaglaze was contacted early in the design process, which made the incorporation of the secondary glazing far more efficient. Over 60 units were installed throughout the buildings. On the front elevation, where noise ingress was a larger concern, the secondary glazing was installed with a larger cavity, to create the sound insulation. On the rear of the building the glazing was mainly for thermal and one intricately etched large window overlooking a flat roof, had a large Secured by Design unit installed for added security.

SUNSQUARE ROOFLIGHTS GET TOP GRADES FROM ESTEEMED OXFORD COLLEGE St John’s College, a prestigious constituent college of the University of Oxford, has transformed a unique area of disused garden space into a brightly-lit semi-subterranean building by featuring a range of madeto-measure skylights from flat-roof skylight specialist, Sunsquare. The installation was part of a redevelopment of the college’s grounds located within the Grade II listed gardens, which saw dilapidated greenhouses and storage sheds transformed into a functional new 60 sqm building – a space for gardening staff to use as an office and break room, as well as a greenhouse area for growing college plants. Oxford-based architects Jessop and Cook were set the task of designing a building that would sit in a small horseshoe-shaped space, set within three listed walls inside the college’s tranquil gardens. Not only did it need to be completely unobtrusive – remaining unnoticed by passers-by – it also had to be aesthetically pleasing for any buildings that overlook it. This includes on-site student accommodation and the new St. John’s College library study centre, which completed in 2019. Because the area was completely enclosed by neighbouring walls, bringing in natural light was another core part of the design. Martin Shaw, Associate at Jessop and Cook Architects, explains: “The brief from the St. John’s works team was to create a much-needed space for the college’s gardeners to use, but there were several question marks around the viability of the site. The former greenhouse and storage space was very small and almost completely enclosed, so we ran the risk that any new facilities would feel cramped and poorly lit. “To combat this, we needed to find a skylight large enough to cover the majority of the roof space – opening it up and allowing in plenty of natural light, whilst also fitting with the building’s design and creating the right growing conditions for the greenhouse area. We were already familiar with the Sunsquare range, and we opted for a purpose-designed part-fixed, part-opening rooflight because it matched perfectly with the building’s low pitch, but still ticked our boxes when it came to thermal performance, safety and functionality. It was efficient enough to keep the gardeners warm in the winter, with an opening mechanism to provide much-needed ventilation in the summer.”
Archetech - Page 38
Jessop and Cook’s drawings for the upgraded gardeners’ area featured a new entrance at one end, with toilets, a shower, a breakroom and an office inside, as well as a central greenhouse section. They also included plans to excavate and lower the ground level by 800mm, to create a comfortable floor to ceiling height internally (but not enough to be seen over the college’s external wall). Here the team specified a 2620mm x 4250mm Sunsquare part-fixed, part-opening rooflight,
positioned above the greenhouse area to provide the majority of the building’s natural light. Jessop and Cook also opted for two smaller 1400mm x 2000mm Sunsquare Aero Vent skylights over the breakroom. Each Aero Vent was fitted with an easy-to-control electric opening and closing mechanism, for immediate and convenient access to fresh air. Martin Shaw continues: “One of the main challenges we faced was that the new facilities had to be completely unobtrusive and invisible from outside the garden walls. The brief was to ensure the building was completely hidden from views of the listed garden! As flat-roof skylight specialists, we believed Sunsquare had the experience to create a skylight with a pitch low enough that it would match the pitch of the roof with a minimal upstand, allowing the building to remain unseen from outside the grounds and eliminating the risk of water pooling. This, combined with the option to customise each rooflight to meet the space’s exact needs, made Sunsquare the most suitable choice.” Mark Lambert, Sales Director at Sunsquare, comments: “We’re very proud to have been involved in such a forward-thinking project – working closely with architects Jessop and Cook to create custommade flat-roof skylights that help get the best out of St. John’s College’s new space. Not only do they provide an abundance of natural light for rooms that need it most (especially in the greenhouse area where solar gains are so important), they also deliver the safety and thermal performance that’s needed for this unique build. A GARDEN IN THE SKY Archetech - Page 40
GRAPHISOFT 33 Central is a striking building located at the gateway to the City of London. Topped with one of the City’s largest roof gardens, and achieving a BREAAM Excellent rating, the building not only offers a flexible modern office space but is also a fine example of sustainable design and construction. John Robertson Architects (JRA) managed the project over a tenyear period, through feasibility studies and planning consent, to detailed design and overseeing construction.
The original building at 33 King William Street was constructed in the 1980s. In 2008 the then owner, property and investment group Topland, asked JRA to undertake a feasibility study to refurbish the existing building. However, following this study, the decision was taken to demolish and re-build.
The new building was designed to maximise the letting area and also to attract potential buyers. As a result, JRA managed to increase the lettable space by 65% from the original building despite the new structure having fewer floors. Meanwhile, the vast landscaped roof garden crowning the building offers unobstructed views to the City of London, Canary Wharf and the River Thames. A SUSTAINABLE PLAN In 2013, Topland sold the site to international property developer HB Reavis, who in turn appointed JRA to develop a detailed userfocused design for the site and deliver the new building. Sustainability was very important for HB Reavis and after reviewing the plans the developer asked JRA to increase the area of the roof garden. Photovoltaic arrays which were to be installed on the roof were reduced in size, allowing JRA to increase the landscaped roof area by 30% to provide planting space for 9,000 plants from more than 55 native species.
2* listed Fishmonger’s Hall, which sits in front of it, and the Art Deco Adelaide House opposite. Planners were keen for the architects to use traditional materials. Rather than smaller handmade tiles, JRA chose a bespoke largescale terracotta faience for the exterior. The colours mirror and complement those of the surrounding buildings. Agnieszka Szedzianis, associate at JRA, takes up the story: “It was important to think about creating a timeless design, as the whole design, planning and build process can take many years and we needed the building to still be viewed as modern and contemporary when it was completed. Back in 2011, it was very innovative to push for a roof garden. There was no example of that in the City of London, and the planners were very impressed.”
A MODERN DESIGN IN A CONSERVATION AREA One of the key challenges was to create a modern building that worked contextually with the historically significant buildings that surround it. 33 Central is situated on a prominent site in the City of London at the northern approach to London Bridge. From the outset the building was conceived as a complementary backdrop to the Grade
ONE OF THE KEY CHALLENGES WAS TO CREATE A MODERN BUILDING THAT WORKED CONTEXTUALLY WITH THE HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS THAT SURROUND IT.
Page 41 - Archetech
To accommodate the roof garden, most of the building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment and plant was relocated from the roof into the basement. A gigantic 12 storey watertight air shaft runs through the middle of the building into the basement to provide air intake.
Internally the building is planned around a central core that echoes the shape of the site. The wide, clear floor plates are suitable for a variety of different occupiers making the building flexible, as well as maximising the internal floor area. A deep 18-metre wide area is ideal for trading floors, 15-metre deep areas are designed for meeting rooms and breakout spaces, and 12-metre spaces are perfect for individual offices. JRA also minimised the number of columns to maximise flexibility during internal fit out.
JRA ESTIMATES THAT 24KM OF STEEL SECTION WAS USED IN THE BUILDING. RE-USING EXISTING FOUNDATIONS To minimise disruption, costs, and environmental impact, JRA opted to re-use the building’s existing foundations. With no excavation needed, the project could be completed up to two years earlier. What’s more, 49% of the concrete used in the new building was recycled which meant fewer materials needed to be transported into the centre of London.
Archetech - Page 42
“We knew the shape of the existing foundations from the previous drawings,” said Agnieszka, “but after the original building was demolished, we found they were weaker than we had thought. Consequently, the new building has a lightweight steel structure, chosen so that it could sit on the existing foundations.” JRA estimates that 24km of steel section was used in the building. The design delivers 2.75m floor to ceiling space, with a façade ratio of 1:2 solid to glass with full height quality glazing (5,000 panels each weighing up to 53 kg) on each elevation for the offices. This maximises the natural light inside, improves thermal insulation and reduces energy costs. A TEAM APPROACH JRA produced the initial designs in ARCHICAD 10, and then re-drew the model in ARCHICAD 15, 17 and 19 as the years progressed, to benefit from the latest functionality in the software.
Agnieszka said: “We had a team of up to 15 people working on the project across two countries at any one time. We designed in 3D using ARCHICAD, and with BIMServer and a fast internet connection, this was a smooth process. “We use Graphisoft’s Teamwork on every project within our practice and we find it invaluable. At one point, we had some members of the team working on the technical drawings, some working on renders and modelling, and others checking details with the contractors.” THE BEST TOOLS FOR THE JOB JRA used ARCHICAD’s trace reference tool extensively on the project. “It allowed us to compare the new model with old versions and check everything aligned and coordinated correctly,” said Agnieszka. “The tool also enabled us to add two different contractor drawings to the model and to immediately see the different versions and what had changed. “In addition, we used Profile Manager to model structure encasements and façade elements. Core and repetitive elements of details were drawn in separate files and imported as hotlinks or modules.” Agnieszka and her team coordinated and exchanged information with six different companies during the project.
“The scheduling tool helped the quantity surveyor to calculate the volumes of materials needed and we imported IFC models from the structural engineers to check the steel frame and to coordinate with architectural elements.”
the different trades. We provided information in both 3D and 2D including scale drawings of the model, which were produced directly from ARCHICAD. We also imported all drawings from the contractors into our model to compare with their proposals.”
Starting in 2011, the project wasn’t run to BIM level 2. However, the team used elements of BIM Level 1 and Level 2 during the design and coordination processes.
AWARD-WINNING BUILDING Purchased by American bank Wells Fargo to establish its headquarters in London, the completed building offers 225,000sq ft of light-filled prime office space, with river views and a beautiful roof garden. It achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and has substantial cycle facilities which exceed the London Plan requirements, including cycle racks and showers to encourage people to cycle or run to work or during their lunch break. As a result, the building was awarded a platinum cycling certificate score.
“In particular,” said Agnieszka, “designing in 3D helped to coordinate with the structural engineer and the MEP. The 3D models also showed the complex junctions and movement joints and helped to inform how to construct and fire protect the building. “The clients liked working in 3D and enjoyed having the ability to move around the model in 3D during design meetings. And by showing the client the ARCHICAD model during design meetings we had the flexibility to change things straight away.” HANDS-ON AT CONSTRUCTION JRA was appointed by HB Reavis during the build stage and was heavily involved during the construction process. “We monitored progress on site,” said Agnieszka, “and also helped the developer with the detailing and interface details between
In addition, the project won Graphisoft’s Project of the Year 2018, was shortlisted for the AJ100 2018 Sustainable Practice of the Year award, shortlisted for the New London Architecture 2018 offices category, won highly commended in the Property Awards 2018 developer of the year category and was a finalist in the British Council for Offices 2018 commercial workplace category. www.graphisoft.com

RADIANA TO HELP ACHIEVE NEW WELL V2 PILOT FEATURES Developers can now choose Radiana, a revolutionary new climate control product which responds to factors such as body heat, to help them achieve the thermal comfort features outlined in the new WELL v2™ pilot, the latest version of the WELL Building Standard™. Promoting the positive impacts of buildings on human health and wellness, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) has recognised the use of radiant cooling systems under WELL v2. WELL is the leading tool for advancing health and wellbeing in buildings globally: Originally launched in 2014, it’s now being adopted in the UK where the wellbeing of the people inside buildings is becoming increasingly important.
Radiant cooling is a technology used to cool buildings based on heat absorption through cold surfaces. Hot always travels to cold, so Radiana ceiling panels are made cooler than the rest of the room and when activated via an app, cool water passes
Radiana environmental consultant David Brunt, explained: “Radiana provides us with a healthy and more sustainable way to cool our buildings. It doesn’t dry out the air, it doesn’t create uncomfortable cold draughts and it has lower running costs than conventional air conditioning. It also provides a consistent temperature right across a room, maintaining this within +/-0.5oC, and the zoning features of Radiana means thermal comfort for all occupants can be effectively controlled. Radiana can be directly fitted to a ceiling frame and no specialist certification is required for its installation. Radiana provides a full design, specification and after-sales service to ensure the system is fully understood, installed and maintained. www.radiana.co.uk
Page 47 - Archetech
WELL v2 is comprised of ten concepts, including features for thermal comfort in buildings, criteria under which radiant systems, such as Radiana can provide additional thermal comfort benefits: • Thermal zoning: Credits for multiple zones and individual control • Radiant thermal comfort: Credit is given to hydronic radiant heating and/or cooling systems if at least 50% of the project floor area is serviced by this system • Humidity control: Credit is given if the mechanical system has the capability of maintaining relative humidity between 30% and 60% at all times.
through the pipes in the Radiana ceiling panels and absorbs heat from the room. This warmer water is then fed into a heat pump, chilled and channelled back around the ceiling until the desired temperature is reached.
TECHNOLOGY COMPANY CAMPUS Archetech - Page 48
ERA ARCHITECTS Located between major highways of Istanbul, D-100 and TEM, in the proximity of Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Pendik, Istanbul, the project transforms an old industrial chemical factory land into a technology company campus for one of the most dynamic Turkish banks. Inspired by the natural topography around the site and the desire of creating a clear contrast to the surroundings’ unorganized urban fabric, a crystal volume as the main working environment is lying gently over several artificial hills sheltering various functions such
as two 600 and 200 seats auditoriums, educational meeting spaces, cafeterias, lounges on bridges, data center and many other functions. With approximately 142,000 sqm total built area and 51,000 sqm site are, the campus programme is configured into three major sections: a 53,500 sqm open offices, a 16,000 sqm auditorium, educational spaces and cafeterias, a 72,500 sqm for parking, a Tier 4 data center, a sport center, common spaces, archives and service areas.
The horizontal floating volume connects the two plots of the site by the introduction of hanged bridges and glazed screen walls over 30 meters spans. The buildings’ main structure is a flat slab concrete system at the offices and exposed frame structure at the lower levels. Along the outer skin, office spaces have been freed out of columns by 4.5 to 11m deep cantilevers. All four office levels are similar. The widest cantilevering areas are supported by large composite beams placed on the roof. The four levels office block stands partially on a transfer structure to enable the widespan volume for the auditorium located within one of the hills. Flexibility and maximizing the daylight is one of the major criteria for the working spaces, the accessibility to the office spaces has been organized through a set of elevated open courtyards where the users circulate and also have the ability to rest and socialize at lounges placed on bridges allowing many surprising views and vistas. The transparency is used to integrate the working spaces with the city, allowing the users to interact and to create different experiences throughout the year. A strong contrast awaits the user as the elevated horizontal crystal has a sharp and decisive cantilevered appearance from outside reflecting the sky, the landscape and the city yet the inner main axis structured with rather by voids. The user circulates through the outdoor ground levels following a path which undulates like a creek between the artificial hills as with the ground outdoor levels, the elevated volume has been designed to allow an experience of the journey for the everyday user. Ponds are designed to enhance the cooling effect on the outdoors as well as on the glazed facades to reduce the temperature gain during hot seasons.
Page 49 - Archetech
FLEXIBILITY AND MAXIMIZING THE DAYLIGHT IS ONE OF THE MAJOR CRITERIA FOR THE WORKING SPACES.
THE BUILDINGS’ MAIN STRUCTURE IS A FLAT SLAB CONCRETE SYSTEM AT THE OFFICES AND EXPOSED FRAME STRUCTURE AT THE LOWER LEVELS.
Archetech - Page 50
The building implements the sustainability principles overall from single and double skin facade systems with dynamic sun shading integrated with lighting, to special heating & cooling systems providing the inner spaces with hundred percent fresh air. The facades have been designed as unitized systems allowing the high quality in terms of heat and acoustic insulation as the site is surrounded by highways with heavy traffic. During the initial stages of design when the site has been acquired, the old chemical factory has been removed. The soil has been checked further for contamination. The remainings have been dismantled into several different categories and have been sent for recycling and certified. The existing pine trees from the old factory has been kept and few displaced into newer locations within the site. The rainwater harvesting is used for the landscape mainly. The green hills were obtained by a system of cables embedded into the sedum surface from top to bottom of the artificial hills. It is one of the largest green roof system applications in Turkey. The campus has received Leed Gold certificate. www.era-arch.com

EX70 Collection with FD30 fire performance options
FORM, FUNCTION AND FIRE Although Vicaima are well-known for the manufacture of on-trend and innovative interior door designs, it is sometimes forgotten that their prowess extends beyond simply form and function. Vicaima also stretch the perceived boundaries and market norms when it comes to the performance of risk critical products, most notably fire doors and door assemblies.
Vicaima fire and security entrance door system
Vicaima FD30 (30 minute) timber fire doors recently tested by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHCLG), achieved an astonishing 54 minutes. Tested on the most onerous side of the door, this result was exemplary and once again illustrated Vicaima’s superior fire door and doorset capabilities, at a time when well-being and personal safety has never been more closely scrutinised.
Archetech - Page 52
Speculation regarding the actual safety of timber fire doors had been much talked about this year, following the government enquiry into the tragic events of Grenfell and related risk critical products. And perhaps this was only to be expected, given the less than robust conclusions drawn by the MHCLG into composite and GRP doors; and their failure to consistently pass a 30-minute fire door test. This result precipitated the removal of many of these products from the market and led to a call for timber fire doors to be independently examined by government as well. Architects and designers will no doubt be well aware of the vital role they play in the decisions which ultimately leads to the supply of safe products. As important specifiers in the build process, they have a duty of care and therefore it is essential to have a clear understanding, that should products fail to perform as intended, they may also share responsibility for any consequences that may arise. Vicaima’s fire performance range removes doubt, with rigorously tested, third party accredited and fully traceably products. Whether doors are required to meet FD30 or FD60 rating, offer additional Secure by Design (SBD) compliance or to meet exacting acoustic criteria, Vicaima designs for private, social and commercial use,
offer specifiers the safe choice when it really matters and in the knowledge that innovative design and performance really can go hand in hand. For further details telephone 01793 532333 or visit www.vicaima.com

Hakwood’s Breda flooring from their Dutch Scrape Collection was specified for the show apartment and Coco from Colour Collection was specified for the rest of the building. It complements the interiors flawlessly and helps to create a setting that is worthy of its prestigious surroundings. Every aspect of the design has been carefully chosen, so as to create an elegant interior that uses both contemporary and traditional materials. The result is a space that is bold, timeless and sophisticated. Fred Scarlett, Sales and Marketing Director for Clivedale comments, “The Mansion has been designed to deliver the highest standard of specification, with every detail carefully considered to ensure the
Everything has been finished to the highest standard. From the white Corian worktops, to the Japanese feature tiles in the bathroom, each apartment has been fitted so as to provide a low maintenance property that favours longevity – Hakwood flooring was chosen for this reason as it’s hard wearing and, because it’s made from natural wood, any wear that occurs only gives it a new character. But that’s not all, as the owner of each respective apartment will be entitled to access the exclusive partnerships that have been prearranged. These include grocery deliveries from Fortnum & Mason, on-call Bamford therapists available for treatments within the spa and a chauffeur driven Bentley house car that’s available for drop-offs and pick-ups within central London. SOM Stratford Skyscraper offers a new residential paradigm by reenvisioning high-rise living and how London’s rich variety of residential typologies can be brought into a vertically stacked building, creating homes that are not only generous in the area but also in volume. The brief centered on people and how they interact with each other in high-rise living. The 248 residences are a combination of spacious loft-style apartments and boutique singlestorey homes, topped by a dramatic three-bedroom penthouse and providing a total of 13 different apartment types.
Manhattan Loft Corporation Founder and CEO, Harry Handelsman is excited about the impact The Stratford Hotel and Lofts will have on London: “Picture the perfect 21st-century hotel, what do you see? Impeccable facilities, immaculate service, and a great location are all vital. But it needs that unique pulse those famous Manhattan hotels had, like the Carlyle, the Chelsea. A club, meeting place, hotel, and home that never treats you like you’re ordinary”.
As designers, the challenge was to design a vertical community that would work as a modern neighborhood – that would reflect the area’s diversity and, supporting this vital social dimension, would encourage easy conversation and new connections. Working as an integrated group of architects and engineers, the design team shaped the tower’s innovative steel and concrete form to create impressive communal spaces that would provide a natural platform for interaction, while working from the inside-out to maximize views and natural light. The hotel occupies the lower six floors and is topped by the first of three dramatic roof gardens, which are carved from the building’s ‘stacked’ profile at levels 7, 25 and 36. Each garden has a unique character, from quiet pathways through wildflowers to a party area, with space for barbecues and a bar. The tower’s strong social dimension is established from the moment visitors set foot inside the building, with a triple-height entrance lobby that is shared by both hotel guests and apartment residents. The double cantilevers that define the gardens also articulate this ethos, and give the building a bold presence on the skyline, signaling the eastwards momentum of the capital’s creative heart. Stratford Skyscraper is a double-cantilevered tower with a uniquely engineered concrete and steel frame that has allowed the incorporation of three spectacular sky gardens dramatically carved into the building’s profile. The building has an unusual tower-structure, in which a cantilevered post-tensioned concrete supports the majority of the floors and steel-framed perimeter truss system at level 10 and 28.

The Stratford promises to combine world-class hospitality, architecture, and art to encourage a new generation of long and short-term guests to make the East End their home from home. A long-stay hotel for the modern era that evokes the industry’s golden age. A more luxurious high-rise experience for residents, with double-height ceilings, a hotel-style concierge service, members’ club and a layout designed to foster a “vertical community”.

The challenge was to find a Heat interface unit (HIU) and Cooling Interface unit (CIU) That had the performance to test against BESA HIU regime, but also physically would not take up to much valuable space for the home owner within the utility cupboard. RINNAI ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF THE TRUST PARTNERSHIP WITH INSTALLER NETWORK Rinnai, a global leader in heating and hot water units & systems for both commercial and residential sites, has announced the launch of the Trust Partnership with the formation of an installer network specifically for its domestic product range, the Zen & Zen Plus. The installer domestic partnership network will be offered to all bona fide, Gas Safe registered, installers of residential heating and hot water units and systems. The launch is complementary to the recent introduction of the Rinnai Zen and Zen Plus domestic heating hot water system. “This is our response to the advent of online direct sales platforms
and companies where the installer is working to a rigid formula and facing downward price pressures on their rates. All sites and installations are unique in their own way and we want to create a domestic installer network - a Trust Partnership - where quality and price are the criteria. Not just price being the first, last and everything about a job. “In the Zen and Zen Plus we have a quality concept backed by high performance products and we want to work with those installers who aim to work at the mid to top end of the market, rather than scramble around the price-driven lower ends of the industry,” says Rinnai Managing Director, Tony Gittings.
That time is now, and we are offering hot water heating units together with a superior performance combi boiler in 24, 29 and 35kW outputs, says Chris Goggin, head of Rinnai UK operations. “We are not launching into the mass UK boiler market – that is, in our view, a saturated and oversubscribed market which is in the throes of a major upheaval in its structure due to the advent of online direct sales platforms. We are offering something very different. And we are aiming to serve a market sector previously overlooked and almost ignored - the provision of luxury levels of hot water at affordable sums to the middle and top end of the marketplace. “Another major difference with the Rinnai Zen & Zen Plus is that the route to market is with installers. We are committed to working with installers as our route to market. The installer is still the major player and, in our view, always will be.” Some of the features of Zen & Zen Plus are: IOT controller as standard; Fast heating mode; DHW pre-heat function - saving wasted water; Energy monitor function allows user to monitor energy usage; flue runs up to 30 meters, Rinnai boiler App for android and IOS; constant temperature-accurate hot water delivery at continuous flow rates. There is also smart Wi-Fi controller and App benefits; The Rinnai app seamlessly connects to the controller in the property; the user can control the boiler remotely adjusting temperature, setting weekly and daily programmes, receiving alarm functions, monitor energy usage and set limits. The Wi-Fi and boiler controller also uses GPS from the user’s mobile to bring on the heat when you are getting close to home to ensure the house is warm when you arrive. Rinnai Zen & Zen Plus is available for use with both natural gas and LPG. Rinnai UK will be launching this innovation plus several other cutting-edge appliances during 2019. The Rinnai Corporation was founded in Nagoya, Japan in 1819 and today operates in 17 nations and regions around the world with sales of kitchen appliances, air conditioners, hot water heating & home heating units in over 80 countries. Says Rinnai UK Managing Director Tony Gittings, “The company has evolved and developed into a group that produces a diversity of products and services that directly benefit ordinary people in their daily lives. The Rinnai Trust Partnership will include comprehensive training and real-time instant-response technical support. “We will also be initiating a complete programme of benefits including liveried work clothing, suitable for all the seasons, plus individualised marketing and business support,” adds Tony Gittings. Rinnai, global leaders in continuous flow hot water heating products and systems, recently introduced the Zen and Zen Plus home hot water & heating system which marries established and proven manufacture durability with new technologies to offer great energy efficiencies, user control and, importantly, unparalleled level of comfort.
“Our core expertise is the mass production of long-term reliable combustion products with advanced technologies – we are a global leader and make over 2 million water heating units every year for domestic, residential and commercial applications. We have been researching and monitoring the UK domestic heating market for several years and would only launch when we had a proven system.
This follows the other significant corporate developments on the global presence of Rinnai - the issuing of a new logo and a new brand statement – ‘A Healthier Way of Living’. For more information visit rinnaiuk.com

The Rinnai Zen and Zen Plus system will increase comfort and reduce energy usage whilst also providing a highly economic solution for today’s changing marketplace.
“Our policy is to help enrich the lives of people in local communities by providing optimal solutions that fit the lifestyle culture, climate conditions, and the energy situation of each country around the world. The three-year period is aiming at connecting the first century to the next one. The theme will be named, ‘Connected in passion for the next 100 years.”
THE ALLURE OF HUNTER STOVE’S NEW WOOD STOVE RANGE Hunter Stoves, one of Britain’s first stove companies, has just launched a new award-winning wood stove brand accurately named Herald Allure. With an array of unique brands, the Exeter based company has over 50 years’ experience and has become synonymous with quality and efficiency. Although it shouldn’t, it did come as a surprise when the creators of the Di Lusso and Aspect stove ranges seemed to outdo themselves yet again.
Archetech - Page 66
Designed for the city house as much as the country home, the Allure’s clean lines are made seamless by an integrated handle; which combined with an extra-large viewing window makes it seem as if the Allure stove is calling out, “I have something to show you,” and it does. Once the flames are blazing the view of the fire becomes mesmerising. This fact will have undoubtedly helped sway the jury at the awards of the biggest annual British stove trade show, the Hearth & Home Show, making the Allure 4 a top three finisher in the best Wood-log or Multifuel Appliance of the Year under 5kW (2019). The pull of the Allures goes a lot deeper that their aesthetic appeal and when it comes to performance the three Allure stoves greatly surpass the forthcoming Ecodesign 2022 eco requirements. With +80% efficiency on wood these stoves can transform every little bit of fuel into heat, putting them in the A to A+ Efficiency Class. Paul Grimes, Hunter Stoves’ MD had this to say about the new range, “We wanted to take all of the firebox and design experience that we’ve gained over the years and include them in one range. It is wonderful to see how well received the Allures have been – we’re over the moon that they are making so many people happy.”
The combination of powerful firebox technology for eco-friendly, efficient burning and Hunter Stoves’ world-recognised commitment to quality have turned the Allure stove range into a stand-out in 2019. With three different sizes and heat-outputs and Ecodesign approved, these modern stoves seem to be ready to take the market by storm. THE STYLE IN PERFORMANCE The Allure stove collection takes aesthetic excellence and powerful firebox technology, and turns them into visually stunning warmth. A benchmark for eco-friendly performance, and Ecodesign 2022 approved, the Allure is your window to the power of fire.

RINNAI CPD ON CONTINUOUS FLOW HOT WATER DELIVERY ON DEMAND NOW FULLY APPROVED BY CIBSE
Archetech - Page 68
Rinnai’s CPD courses on continuous flow hot water delivery units and systems have now been fully approved by the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE). Four CPDs have been approved -: • Excellence in Design of Continuous Flow Hot Water Delivery • Continuous Flow Hot Water Appreciation • The Regulatory Horizon for Hot Water Delivery • ACOP L8 “Demand for all of our training courses and programmes have risen steeply as the industry increasingly has to focus on energy, environment and finance efficiency in hot water delivery within a commercial context, “says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin. CPD courses have been designed for M&E consultants and specifiers, design and build engineers and, facilities managers. These courses
had already attracted praise from CIBSE. For example, it says of the ‘CONTINUOUS FLOW WATER HEATING SYSTEM SIZING AND DESIGN’ course in an appraisal: “The course delivers what it outlines and is well constructed.” Rinnai has developed and manufactures the only complete and most comprehensive range of highly efficient ErP labelled A-rated continuous flow water heaters on the market, from the smallest domestic model to industrial units. “Rinnai understands that time means money which is why we are happy to adopt an ‘any time, any place, anywhere’ approach to CPD delivery and training,” adds Mr Goggin. DUNHAM-BUSH PROVIDES A MASTER CLASS IN LOW ENERGY VENTILATION FOR CLASSROOMS All ventilation systems must have the capability to operate in typical UK weather conditions, including high winds and rain. Final ventilation designs will depend on the following key factors: • Building location • Type of construction •Site ambient noise levels • Local air quality / levels of pollution •Amount of glazing / solar gain •Patterns / type of use
Dunham-Bush has signed an exclusive agreement with Eco-Airvent to manufacture and distribute their range of innovative, energy efficient ventilation products, including the patented Classmaster® and VHR heat recovery units. Air quality in classrooms has a major bearing on the academic performance and productivity of occupants and with air pollution levels continuing to rise in the UK, especially in cities, it has become increasingly important that these issues are addressed. Released by the government last year, BB101: ‘Ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality 2018’ has been instrumental in the most significant changes in ventilation design, regulation and guidance in schools since 2006. Working in parallel with BB93: ‘Acoustic designs for schools, performance standards (2015)’, it gives a detailed holistic approach to the internal environment in schools with the emphasis very much on energy efficiency. BB101 guidelines on ventilation, include standards for all spaces within a school or college and new guidance for science labs and other practical areas.
VERSATILE CONTROL OPTIONS The factory fitted Eco-Pro 3 controller offers a plug and play capability and is ideal where stand-alone control is required. Units can be activated either via volt free contact (VFC) from a time switch or BMS (enable / disable signal). The controller can give fault outputs either to the Eco-Fault panel or BMS panel. Individually adjustable fan speeds on trickle and boost settings with frost protection, automatic summer by-pass and night time cooling options are included as standard. Fans switch automatically to boost speed when CO2 is detected. www.dunham-bush.co.uk

REVOLUTIONISING THE ACOUSTIC MARKET Did you know that every year, 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate our marine environments?
The great news is, acoustic improvement products are no longer boring and hidden, they’re stylish, colourful and are used in a variety of applications.
Whether by errant plastic bags winding their way into gutters or large amounts of mismanaged plastic waste streaming from rapidly growing economies, that’s equivalent to emptying a rubbish lorry full of plastic into the ocean every minute of every day for an entire year! And that much plastic is bound to have an impact on ocean ecosystems.
Soundtect specialise in the manufacture of many different solutions which can be tailored to be as funky as you like to complement any office design theme.
But did you also know that noise pollution is the primary cause of reduction in productivity and can contribute to stress and illness which can also contribute to absenteeism and continuous turnover of staff?
Archetech - Page 72
And background noise, even at low levels, has been found to increase stress levels and undermine short-term memory, reading comprehension and willingness to engage with others. The trend for open plan offices continues and is highly successful for several reasons as it is cost effective, allows room for expansion and changing team dynamics. It creates a ‘buzzy atmosphere’ enhancing the office culture and enjoyment at work. However, the noise by-product affects individuals, driving them to grab their headphones and retreat into their own world, or work from home. So, considering acoustics at the planning stage is essential when embarking on an office refurbishment.
But what does this have to do with plastic pollution? Well, Soundtect manufacture their acoustic solutions from 70% recycled polyester. The products are actually a third-generation product which began life first as plastic PET bottles which are then recycled into exhibition carpets before the polyester fibres are re-used again, being woven into superior quality high performance acoustic felt used for the acoustic solutions. Recently Soundtect launched a new printed wood finish for their Freestyle® range. This lightweight, semi-rigid sound absorbing panel has revolutionised the acoustic market and the perfect absorbent wall surface solution for that rustic, urban feel that is popular right now. So the solution is straight-forward; to improve the cognitive performance of your team in an open plan office environment, more consideration needs to be given to noise dynamics and how you can reduce them with effective acoustic solutions like Freestyle® and as you are also buying into the sustainable solution offered by Soundtect, you are also helping the environment at the same time. www.soundtect.com

BRAND NEW SURFACES ADDED TO THE DP-LIMITLESS COLLECTION BY DECORATIVE PANELS LAMINATION October marked the launch of three new additional ranges to further enhance the stocked dp-limitless Collection available from Ellandbased Decorative Panels Lamination – and alongside stunning products from Pfleiderer and REHAU are out of the ordinary surfaces from Voice Tec.
Archetech - Page 78
Taking its offer to more than 90 laminates from Pfleiderer’s DST collection, the new additions to Decorative Panels dp-limitless range include striking unicolours like Orange, Signal Red and Gentian Blue. Grain embossed unicolours have also been added along with embossed woodgrains like Milano Walnut, Ponderosa Pine, Bordeaux Oak, St Tropez Oak and Zebrano. Unlike traditional bonding techniques which use cold pressed Emulsion Adhesives, dp-lamination bonds the Laminate to the substrate using a high performance PUR adhesive. Not only does this give a higher glue line strength it offers the additional benefits of being waterproof with excellent low and high temperature performance. There is no doubt that Laminate bonded in this way has all round superior qualities when compared to other methods. The new Pfleiderer products are available in laminated board size of 3050 x 1300 x 15mm, or 18mm MDF, and 2440 x 1220mm dp-lite hollowcore in variety of thicknesses and quantities from just one board. Next to be launched in October at UK Construction Week was the REHAU Rauvisio Crystal range – a collection of on-trend surface materials that’s suitable for both furniture and interior wall cladding applications. Rauvisio Crystal combines the visual appeal of glass with the uncomplicated processing properties of an acrylic, and it comes with the added advantage of being 10 times more break resistant than real glass and half the weight. It’s also light, UV, scratch and
impact resistant. REHAU’s Rauvisio Crystal décors – Conglomerato Chiaro, Conglomerato Scuro, Marmo Toscana, Marmo Romano, Marmo Bianco, Marmo Nero and Ruggine – have all been added to the dp-limitless offer and all the designs are available in gloss and matt finishes. All are available laminated on 2800 x 1300 x 15mm MDF and in quantities as low as a single sheet. For a seamless look, matching edgebanding is available directly from REHAU. If you’re looking for a finish that’s very different, you’re sure to find inspiration in a new collection of Voice Tec acrylic textured surfaces that’s been added to the dp-limitless range under the Textured Surfaces category. Decorative Panels Lamination has launched six 1.4mm thick patterns that are supplied in a white matt finish for recoating with a universal 1mm backing sheet, if required. Launched by dp-lamination at the Surface & Materials Show in October, Voice Tec’s Loop, Cactus, Diamantino, Italian Plank, Juta and Giglio are deeply textured and very tactile. Taking inspiration from flowers and bark as well as metals, weaves and abstract patterns, these totally unique finishes are ideal for any custom project, and the surface can be used either uncoated or with an over lacquer. It can be painted or lacquered using acrylic, polyurethane or water-based finishes, it’s resistant to weather and UV rays and can be processed using normal woodworking tools and machinery. Recoatable edging is also available. If you need a design creating to your own specification, Voice Tec will even do that for you and Decorative Panels Lamination will apply it to 3050 x 1300 x 15mm MDF panels. VESTA WINS 2019-2020 INTERNATIONAL PROPERTY AWARD FOR ‘BEST INTERIOR DESIGN SHOW HOME’ Vesta is proud to announce its 2019-2020 International Property Award for ‘Best Interior Design Show Home’, in their first year of entering the awards.
Archetech - Page 80
The International Property Awards is an annual event to celebrate the highest levels of achievement amongst residential and commercial property professionals around the world, open to companies operating in all sectors of the real estate industry. London based Vesta, who launched in 2017, won in their category for the design of an open plan, two-bedroom show home apartment in an E14 docklands development, Explorer’s Wharf. With the first-time buyer market and a young professional demographic in mind, Vesta designed an apartment for city workers with a love of culture and urban lifestyle, who might also be looking for a home which offers a relaxing escape after a busy day in the city. Vesta created an interior scheme to marry the industrial with the luxurious, which is reflective of the lifestyle the local area offers.
Taking inspiration from the now residential warehouses of London’s East Docklands, it mixes handmade items and natural materials to create a loft living style, with bold rich velvets for a touch of luxury. Of the world-renowned mark of excellence, Vesta’s CEO Chris Dale said “We are delighted to have been awarded this industry accolade. The news has come at a great time for Vesta, following the launch of our sister company Investa in October of this year. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional service to clients, creating imaginative and inspired interiors that truly add value to every property. It’s our first time entering the International Property Awards and we are looking forward to an exciting future.” The UK International Property Award winners were announced at a glittering awards dinner at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Friday October 25th. GREEN GAMECHANGER: HOW PLANTS ARE TRANSFORMING BUILDINGS INTO THRIVING VERTICAL FORESTS ANS GLOBAL
As the UK’s population continues to climb, expanding cities are eating away at the country’s already limited green space, with over half of all forests, gardens and farmland lost to new development every year. With urbanisation showing no signs of slowing, and with public demand for greener, healthier public spaces increasing, planners, designers and architects are looking to urban regeneration to transform cities into vibrant, sustainable destinations.
Archetech - Page 82
Green space is now considered to be an essential element of future city living, and with benefits ranging from improving physical and mental health to supporting biodiversity, plants have a crucial role to play in enhancing the long-term wellbeing of city dwellers. While foliage is becoming a common sight on new developments, Steve McIntyre, Urban Environment Consultant, ANS Global outlines why it’s the UK’s existing buildings which are the key to a greener future. Creating a positive difference within inner city environments, living walls and green roofs have become a prominent visual stamp of ethical design, commended for their ability to transform an urban eyesore in a sustainable design statement. While cities such as London are championing their application within new developments as part of new urban greening policies, retrofits and regeneration projects can be a quicker and more efficient option to reintroduce green space back into existing communities.
Installed onto wasted vertical space, living walls can transform even the most unlikely structure into a thriving oasis, from concrete car parks and listed buildings, to dated residential properties and developments. Reducing waste by utilising the exterior of an existing structure, green installations can also go a long way in securing approval from planners, with local authorities often looking favourably on designs which promote urban greening.
Working with a living wall specialist is strongly advised to ensure that the correct method of installation complements and protects the structure. For example, listed buildings require a more careful approach, with a steel frame installed first to a build’s exterior. Leaving the building’s exterior undisturbed and protected, the living wall is then mounted onto the frame, doubling up as a natural defence to a listed exterior.
With over 90% of the world’s population living in areas where air quality exceeds recommended guidelines, living walls offer a range of benefits to tackle the problems presented by densely populated cities, including filtering out harmful toxic pollutants generated by vehicles, as well as restoring nature and wildlife in urban areas. Reintroducing green space back into communities can also have a positive effect on mental health and well-being, with plants shown to have an impact on occupant mood and stress levels; while creating places where people want to live, work and socialise.
As a sustainable, green approach to traditional rendering, specialists will also be able to advise on the type of plants needed to ensure the feature thrives in the long term, while integrating and enhancing the environment which surrounds it. Often arriving as a modular system, the installation process is relatively simple, while automated irrigation systems help keep maintenance to a minimum.
When applying to existing structures, living walls camouflage a build’s exterior, while protecting it from aging and the elements. As well as moderating temperatures and improving overall efficiency – even for older buildings – in some cases, living walls can also increase a property’s value. Applicable to almost any surface and often featuring a variety of wall-mounted plants, from vibrant flowers and lush foliage, living walls provide an opportunity to maximise outdoor space in urban areas where accessible green space is limited.
www.ansgroupglobal.com
Page 83 - Archetech
GREEN SPACE IS NOW CONSIDERED TO BE AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF FUTURE CITY LIVING.
With space only set to become more limited, living walls are an efficient green solution to not only reintroducing nature back into communities, but also in adapting to rising global environmental pressures. Paving the way for greener design and offering lasting social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits, plants are the key to a healthier construction and development future, helping to transform cities into living, breathing urban forests.

CREATE A USEABLE LIVING SPACE BELOW YOUR DECK WITH REVOLUTIONARY TREX RAINESCAPE® The new Trex RainEscape® system allows homeowners and developers to maximise outdoor living environments and create the dream space. Trex RainEscape deck drainage system manages water to allow for a dry, useable space beneath an elevated deck. Installed above the joists of the substructure, this innovative system features a trough and downspout construction that drains water away from a deck and protects the area below from rain, sun, snow melt and other elements. As a result, homeowners gain bonus space for storage or added living area. With Trex RainEscape, homeowners can safely outfit the area under a deck with outdoor furnishings, lighting, ceiling fans and entertainment components. Unlike competitive products – which make use of “under joist” technology – Trex RainEscape is installed above the joists, protecting them from moisture, water damage and deterioration that may occur over time and ensuring the structural integrity of the deck. The system is easy and efficient to install on both new and existing decks – making it an ideal solution for both contractors and do-it-yourselfers. The Trex RainEscape system is an easy and inexpensive addition to any elevated deck. Components include a 3.66m and 4.88m drainage trough sheet, a down spout, butyl waterproof caulk, 102mm x 15.24m butyl waterproof tape, 102mm x 102mm post flash, and 3.2mm x 25.4mm x 7.6m wall flash. Furthermore, only three tools – scissors or a utility knife, a staple gun hammer and a caulk gun – are required for installation. For even more peace of mind, Trex RainEscape is backed by a 20-year Limited Warranty.

TRIDONIC SUPPLIES NEW MEGA AIRPORT IN BEIJING WITH LIGHT-ON-DEMAND
Archetech - Page 88
TRIDONIC
The new Beijing Daxing International Airport, approximately 50 kilometres south of the Chinese capital, is already being hailed as a mega airport – and not without reason. Enormous capacity, unique architecture, rapid construction and special, customizable lighting are the hallmarks of the building. Tridonic played a major role in providing optimum lighting. The technology company supplied drivers, intelligent lighting control and light-on-demand with daylight tracking for this mega project. The lighting concept is based on indirect lighting and uses concealed light sources and reflected light to create a special atmosphere. The building had to be welcoming and modern, and above make the time spent there by the millions of passengers a pleasant one. A very large area had to be equipped with functional light and an individual control system in only a short space of time. The lighting had to include daylight detection, flexible adjustment of lighting levels, remote control of the luminaires and simple maintenance.
DALI drivers and intelligent lighting control provide light-ondemand Tridonic supplied the LED drivers that provide the basis for lighton-demand in the new terminal building. Lighting is an essential element at the airport. It has to fulfil different tasks and be used for different situations. The DALI drivers enable these different requirements to be met – always in line with the needs and comfort of passengers. Relaxation areas, for example, have low illuminance levels, whereas reading areas are brightly lit for optimum visibility, and the restaurant area is sufficiently bright to create the right atmosphere. Daxing is the first new airport project in China in which DALI drivers and a light management system are integrated in the KNX building control system. Tridonic has supplied the starfish airport with DALI LED drivers, intelligent lighting control and an on-demand lighting solution. More than 2,000 LCA one4all drivers in the premium series are used in the spacious interior of the new terminal building. The drivers are compact and dimmable. They are therefore ideal for discreet indirect lighting. Tridonic has also supplied around 3,000 drivers for illuminating the parking spaces. The drivers in the premium and premium SELV series are characterised by their efficient dimming behaviour and optimum functionality. They therefore meet the requirements for daylight connectivity over large areas.
“We are delighted to be involved in this globally significant mobility project. Thanks to our broad portfolio and the expertise of our team, we were able to quickly find appropriate solutions and meet the requirements of the airport authority,” said Christoph Zimmermann, SVP Global Sales & Communication at Tridonic. “With our solutions we are helping to make Beijing Daxing airport a pleasant place for millions of passengers.” Beijing Daxing International Airport – a mega project In terms of the area it covers, the new Beijing airport is the world’s largest airport. It was constructed in only four years. It was officially opened on September 30 to coincide with 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Covering a total of 1.4 million square metres, it is expected to handle 100 million passengers a year. Approximately 300 take-offs and landings are scheduled to take place each day. Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, the unique futuristic building resembles a starfish from the air. www.tridonic.com
Daylight detection, simple maintenance and energy efficiency The results of the mega project speak for themselves. Thanks to Tridonic, the airport has large-scale interior lighting with daylight tracking. The luminaires can be remote controlled in real time and as accurately as if they were being controlled from the immediate vicinity. For control purposes the luminaires are combined intelligently into small groups and can be adjusted independently and in any way within these groups. Maintenance is very simple. The drivers automatically provide information on their operating status and that of the luminaires – again in real time. There is therefore no need for permanent monitoring, and action is only required when necessary. Thanks to predictive maintenance, technicians receive information about impending failures or defective components at an early stage and can react in good time. This makes their job and the job of facility managers much easier and also has cost benefits. The low standby power consumption of only 0.2 W makes the drivers energy efficient.

PROTEUS CLADDING HITS THE HIGH NOTES AT CHESIL LODGE
Archetech - Page 98
PROTEUS An innovatively designed new retirement complex in Winchester has become the latest state-of-the-art development to feature bronze rainscreen cladding from Proteus Façades.
with local architect’s Design Engine, where it was envisaged that the building should be developed to be as sympathetic to its surroundings as possible.
Chesil Lodge is a £16 million Extra Care facility that provides contemporary style homes for local residents of Winchester aged 55 and over.
Proteus HR TECU Bronze was specified because the material’s ochre, brown and red tones perfectly complement the brickwork colour to create an aesthetically pleasing yet unobtrusive façade. Working alongside Main Contractor Galliford Try, Proteus Facades fabricated the panels, which have a lightweight aluminium honeycomb core structurally bonded between two thin gauges of metal, with the outer veneer in this case being the specified TECU Bronze material. This rainscreen system minimises weight loadings on the underlying structure whilst helping the panels achieve near perfect optical flatness, strength and rigidity. The cladding panels were installed by MK Facades.
The development, commissioned by Winchester City and Hampshire County Council, features striking Proteus’ HR TECU Bronze rainscreen panels on the upper levels and traditional Winchester red brick on other elements. During the design stages a series of workshops were held between Winchester Council and designers PDP Architecture in conjunction
The rich diversity of the TECU range of copper and copper-alloy materials such as bronze allow unparalleled variety and high-quality aesthetics for architecture especially as the material weathers and mellows over time. This subtly changes the façade’s appearance as it develops a tough, maintenance-free and beautiful patina, as will be the case at Chesil Lodge. During the weathering process, the matt surface of the Proteus HR TECU Bronze rainscreen cladding panels develop an oxide layer that will provide additional protection from rain, frost, wind, UV rays and other external elements. This brings with it striking colour variations through an entire range of warm russet tones that change depending on the level of natural light and time of year. The overall building design is based around a clever syncopation of two and three storey blocks that feature integral balconies, which, in combination with the Proteus HR Bronze rainscreen cladding and glazing elements, visually interrupt the skyline, avoiding what could otherwise have been a large, monolithic structure. This massing of the development and the façade treatment are what sets this project apart, creating a development that is sympathetic with its location. PDP Architecture orientated the building so that it faced on to the rear of Chesil Street along Barfield Close, again, a measure to avoid imposing on existing buildings and the local area.
Proteus Facades offers one of the widest ranges of TECU copper and copper alloys in the UK. This includes TECU Brass, TECU Copper, TECU Bronze, TECU Gold, TECU Zinn, a tin-plated copper that offers all the advantages of copper but weathers from silver to subtle grey tones.
All the materials are available pre-patinated, which bypasses the gradual weathering process, so that the cladding panels take on the beautiful earth tones from the day the façade is installed. Proteus Facades also offers a range of other surface treatments that avoid, delay or accelerate the weathering process. Chesil Lodge comprises of 52 self-contained Extra Care Units supported by a number of shared facilities including a reception area, cafe/restaurant facility, a lounge and activity rooms, as well as a Day Care Unit which allows families respite from care for the morning or afternoon. To find out more about Proteus HR rainscreen cladding panels and other TECU materials, visit: www.proteusfacades.com or call: 0151 545 5075.

RMIG KEY PROJECTS IN 2019
A SPECIAL FACADE FOR A SPECIAL STORE The premises of the Østjysk Våbenhandel in Denmark can be clearly seen from a major motorway. For customers, as well as those driving past, the unusual facade of this building catches the eye and is a landmark for the area. RMIG have manufactured and supplied 400 m2 of perforated sheets that make up the facade, and with RMIG ImagePerf, a giant motif of a pheasant in flight decorates the building. The large open area of the perforated sheets provides good visibility of the outside surroundings for those using the building during the day, and at night the lights in the

PERFORATED FACADE DECORATES INNOVATIVE SCHOOL BUILDING When constructing Kalvebod Fælled School, the objective was to create a balanced atmosphere of school and leisure time for both children and adults, with the focus on learning and activities. This ambition has been achieved by a stunning circular construction with a gymnasium at the heart of the building.

A FUNCTIONAL AND AESTHETIC FACADE FOR AN AWARD-WINNING BUILDING MSCP Lincoln Hub Multi-storey car park, Lincoln, England Architects: John Roberts Architects A vast regeneration project for Lincoln City Centre has resulted in a modern and effective transport hub for both visitors and residents, with a pedestrian plaza, retail space and a bus station. The single largest element of the project is the 1,000-space six-level multi-storey car park. The facade of the car park has been created with 3,600 m2 of expanded metal and 400 m2 of perforated sheets, with the Lincoln coat of arms and fleur-de-lis reproduced on to the perforated panels by means of RMIG ImagePerf. The inspirational style of the building and its architectural merits have resulted in the award for Best New Car Park at the British Parking Awards. VISIONARY USE OF PERFORATED METAL A unique auditorium for the Faculty of Humanities at the Uppsala University campus stands out like a precious jewel among the surrounding traditional buildings. The architects chose RMIG ImagePerf to reproduce the work of artist Ann Lislegaard, resulting in a unique and breathtaking facade for the auditorium. The auditorium for the Humanities – Humanistiska Teatern – is now being used for various events at Uppsala University in Sweden. It is situated in the part of campus called The English Park and consists of two separate building blocks, one for administrative offices and one for the auditorium itself. The Swedish architect firm, White Arkitekter, designed both the office building and the auditorium. Whereas the office building merges with existing buildings on campus, the horseshoe-shaped auditorium stands out as a powerful symbol of humanistic activities and events at the university. It is equipped with state-of-the-art audio-video technology that allows everyone to express their opinions and be heard both inside the auditorium and around the world. This unique arena encourages participation and exchange, thereby achieving its goal of creating social connection.
ARTWORK REPRODUCED WITH PRECISION
The use of perforated metal and the technology behind picture perforation were of great interest to the architects. RMIG ImagePerf is part of the RMIG City Emotion concept and presents elegant and innovative solutions to the challenges of architectural design by converting perforated metal into a ‘projection screen’ for art, photographs, illustrations and graphic designs.
Danish-Norwegian artist Ann Lislegaard was commissioned with the task of designing the artwork for the facade of the oval-shaped building. She developed an intricate, abstract pattern of circular

For the architects, it was important that the uniqueness of the building was reflected through both its interior and exterior design. Therefore, they chose an untraditional approach to the construction of the facade and joined forces with an accomplished artist as well as world specialists in perforated metal at RMIG.
shapes that was – in part – inspired by the natural images drawn by internationally acclaimed Swedish botanist Carl von Linné. Ann Lislegaard’s vision was converted into digital format and the image was then reproduced by means of picture perforation.

LINDAPTER HOLLO-BOLTS PROVIDED A SOLUTION FOR SECURING AN ARCHITECTURAL GLASS PRISM FAÇADE TO THE CASTILLIA BUILDING IN MILAN, ITALY The Isola district of Milan has recently undergone a major transformation. Due to the prime location of De Castillia 23, Gruppo Unipol decided to renovate the building and occupy it as their headquarters.

Unipol wanted to create an innovative and contemporary building in keeping with the area. The large-scale restoration work aimed to completely change the building’s aesthetic features, but also to improve its functionality and overall efficiency. The architects proposed an unusual glass prism façade design. This required a method of connecting the glass support brackets to the hollow tubular sections forming the façade.
Archetech - Page 102
The structural engineer specified the Flush Fit Hollo-Bolt by Lindapter, an expansion bolt that requires access to only one side of a Structural Hollow Section (SHS). Hollo-Bolt was chosen as it offered fast installation, high strength capacity, clean visual finish, and a range of independent technical accreditations to achieve a design compliant with Eurocode 3.
clamping force. The brackets then securely held each glass panel in the required position to create the elegant façade.
6,800 Hollo-Bolts were used to connect the glass support brackets to the façade framework of two buildings.
The specification of Hollo-Bolts provided a clean architectural appearance, due to the flush fit head type, and excellent corrosion protection thanks to the zinc plated finish.
Installation was quick and easy as each bolt is simply inserted into pre-drilled holes and tightened to provide the necessary

INSIDE AND OUT AT HATTON GARDEN There are many older buildings around the UK that just need a creative eye, some time and attention to transform them into a beautiful modern space. Eurobrick has been leading the brick slip cladding sector for nearly 30 years and has extensive experience of supplying its systems to redevelopment projects that aim to rejuvenate older properties. Hatton Garden is a well-known commercial area in the Holborn district of London, famous throughout the years for its associations with luxury products and diamonds. Minerva House has an attractive façade, but required extensive modernisation to the structure of the building to bring it up to the modern standards of today. Developer GPF Lewis Ltd completed the project in 2018 following 50 weeks work with a £5.1m budget. The redevelopment of this landlocked site involved the demolition of the rear part of the building, adding a steel frame extension to the rear to connect to existing floor levels. The project also included general refurbishment of the existing building and a high-end commercial fit-out throughout the interior space. Eurobrick supplied circa 400m² of 17mm X-Clad for use both externally and internally, installed by BR Hodgson. Externally, the system was finished with glazed white stretcher and header slips and corners. These slips were fitted in a Flemish bond pattern to match the style of the existing building. For the interior, Islington Yellow Rustica stretcher and header slips were selected from Eurobrick’s Classic Range. These were set out in an adapted English bond style and finished with Eurobrick’s specialist pointing mortar, Europoint, in light grey.
The whole accommodation now lives up to the building’s attractive façade, providing a modern and stylish commercial space. www.eurobrick.co.uk

IN MY OWN WORDS, CHRIS LEPINE ZHA
During my time at university, I had very diverse interests and found it difficult to decide on a major. I eventually graduated with a degree in Finance, which often raises eyebrows amongst colleagues and friends who quickly remark “so how did you end up in architecture?!”
Archetech - Page 116
As a child, I was absorbed by the making of “things”. Making something out of whatever I could get my hands on was a favourite past time. So, the gravity I felt towards a profession where making something physical is the ultimate goal drew me inexorably to architecture. The idea of being an architect was always latent, until, like a spark, I knew that was the career for me to pursue. It is a profession that stimulates nearly every interest and challenges all imaginable abilities. It’s quite unique in that way. So, I started my career in Atlanta, GA, but soon moved to London when I was offered a position at Foster and Partners. I have always believed that London is the nexus for architecture and related professions, with an inspiring concentration of great firms and talent. I was doubly fortunate to reside in London while working at Foster and Partners where I was exposed to the highest architectural standards. As is with any aspiring professional, I soon felt ready to take on a new challenge. I was always attracted to Zaha Hadid’s work. The architecture is alluring, filled with energy and ambition.
When I was offered a position to lead a tower project for Hadid in Dubai, the Signature Towers – an intertwined trio of office, residential, and hotel towers, the timing and the opportunity were perfect.
immediately – so it is quite fulfilling to know people will soon be building their lives within a tower, where myself and the team dedicated so much time and effort to see built.
I worked equally with Hadid and Patrik Schumacher on a number of designs during my time, and it was always a team effort. Hadid was a tremendous character and she attracted those with an intense interest in design and a passion for testing design possibilities. Her guidance and lessons were broader than individual mentorship. She instilled a way of thinking, a mind-set and an attitude where you felt empowered to design beyond current possibilities.
Talking of homes, I often say that an architect’s house is never finished, moreover from working on such stimulating projects – it’s hard not to want to reimagine your house. So I’ve just ‘finished’ a complete refurbishment and extension of my London home.
Working on One Thousand Museum Residences was a challenge and an experience I’ll never forget. We made extensive use of an accurate, geometrically precise 3D model to maintain a high degree of control over the design and coordination. It was used for all aspects of design and further detail development. We developed and used the model to visualize the building form and interior spaces, to generate the drawing packages, and to check for clashes between architecture, structure and mechanical systems. We also shared the model with some very sophisticated consultants and fabricators to conduct structural analysis and to produce the panels that enclose the entire exoskeleton. The exoskeleton is a world first - a true synthesis of architecture, structure, and fabrication. It is a “pure” system that expresses this synthesis. Typically, structure, external cladding, and internal finishes are three completely isolated and separately applied systems. A structure is erected, then it has cladding attached to it, and finally, an internal finish is applied. With One Thousand Museum Residences, however, internal and external finishes are not simply applied, they are part of the system – the permanent formwork - used to erect the structure. Structure, internal and external finish are all integrated and completed together as a result of the system. The spirit of innovation at ZHA is always a driving force in our designs. As a result, the One Thousand Museum tower is visually and physically pioneering, yet it is structurally efficient and perfectly suited to fulfil its programmatic requirements. The tower features deep balconies, broad vistas, generous amenities, and parking levels all configured and expressed in an unexpected way and to create one synthesized design. Working on One Thousand Museum utilised such an array of different techniques and it’s hard not to be inspired, when the project itself is something very special. The One Thousand Museum tower has recently obtained its temporary certificate of occupancy (TCO) indicating the building is now ready for occupancy and closings can commence
What was once a typical Victorian Terrace House on the inside and out, now maintains its traditional exterior and is juxtaposed by a very modern open and brightly day-lit interior. Living in a conservation area means external modifications are extremely limited. Additionally, the original property posed many challenges. Extremely small spaces, awkward circulations, dampness and low internal daylight levels. I was determined to confront these challenges and transform this house into a modern family dwelling – one my family, friends and colleagues would be proud of and could enjoy! From a design front, we fully integrated structural steel to achieve the goal of uninterrupted surfaces and continuous spaces. This was the basis to ensuring generous daylight, unencumbered spatial flow, and a marked contrast between the original Victorian features adjacent to the modern design which now characterises our home. In my career thus far I have worked on such a broad range of projects at differing scales. Each building type and each scale of project brings with it new challenges and experiences. It is always thrilling to explore a new building type or building sector. I would say working on wineries are one of my favourite challenges. I was fortunate to have done a winery in Spain. I see a winery as an agro-industrial building which has to blend the extremes of being highly functional, yet cultural and artistic. It is an architecture integrated into the landscape with the purpose of crafting something rich from the earth’s harvest. I guess that’s a similar challenge to designing a home. Providing an attractive, functional space, yet reaching beyond to create an environment full of interest, passion and enjoyment – a haven where a family can flourish. One Thousand Museum by Zaha Hadid is a limited collection of museum-quality homes which offers an unprecedented level of service and amenities, available exclusively through ONE Sotheby’s International Realty www.sothebysrealty.com

NEW SCHÖCK THERMAL CONNECTION FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE WALLS The Alphadock is an innovative new addition to the Schöck range of solutions for minimising thermal bridges in building structures. It thermally insulates connections for reinforced concrete walls and columns, providing optimum thermal insulation and maximum load bearing capacity. Thermal bridges in concrete wall and column connections cause significant energy losses, making it difficult to achieve the highest energy standards in new buildings. Additionally they present a risk area for condensation and mould growth that can cause structural damage and occupant health issues. The Schöck Alphadock dramatically reduces the effect of thermal bridges in those areas where previously the problem was very difficult to combat. The first product installation in the UK is at the landmark Keybridge residential development, in the heart of London’s Vauxhall regeneration area. The scheme combines elements of Manhattan architecture with London’s prestigious mansion block style, offering 595 new homes across six individual buildings. One of the buildings, Keybridge Lofts, which stands at 37 storeys, is the UK’s tallest residential brick tower; and there are exposed brick-clad columns which span two floors and tie back into the structure at the very top of the building.
For further information on the new Alphadock product contact Schöck on 01865 290 890; or download the brochure at www. schoeck.co.uk
Page 125 - Archetech
The requirement was to provide a thermally broken base fixing for the columns. Previously Schöck have offered a hybrid solution involving the steel-to-steel modular Isokorb, combined with a specially designed base plate. This formed a thermally broken base fixing, which was cast into the slab and to which a further Isokorb product was attached. Allowing a steel column to be installed, which was then clad in brickwork. The top of the column being retained and tied-in using standard Isokorb elements to provide a fully thermally broken solution. The method was effective, but not the most efficient in terms of time and cost. Now with the Schöck Alphadock, installation is easy. It is an important new solution as linear thermal bridges at reinforced concrete walls and columns are often neglected – and the resulting energy loss simply compensated for in the thermal calculations.

NEW TUDOR HALL TEACHING BUILDING UTILISES GEC ANDERSON TECHNOLOGY
TRINITY VIEW STUDENT ACCOMMODATION – A STUNNING DEVELOPMENT
For more information and engineering advice please contact J&P Building Systems ltd.
The creation of an ultra-modern Teaching Building as a new core to a long established school in Oxfordshire, has included the installation of custom designed and manufactured stainless steel sinks, worktops and splashbacks from GEC Anderson for several of the different technical spaces. Tudor Hall School, originally founded in 1850 by the Rev TW and Mrs Todd at a site in Salisbury, has been at its present location at Wykham Park in Banbury since World War II, while the past decade has seen some £15 million invested in ensuring the Independent Girls’ Boarding and Day School offers the best possible facilities. The Birmingham office of ADP Architects has been responsible for the design work on this latest project, while Clegg Construction Ltd of Nottingham was the main contractor carrying out the work.
Set to become one of the most iconic developments in the city of Coventry, Trinity View Student Accommodation is a stunning new 614 bedroom residential scheme that has been built to bring the latest in modern city living to students looking to place themselves in the heart of the city and University life. With the development residential in nature obviously safety of the student occupants was a major consideration in the selection of construction materials. For this reason, ALUCOBOND® A2 (7,000m2) was specified for the project, which is a non-combustible aluminium composite panel system, and due to its mineral-filled core, meets the strict requirements of fire regulations in the UK and globally, without compromising the architectural possibilities for the concept and design of buildings.
