HUMANITI: MONTREAL’S FIRST VERTICAL CITY A NEW DYNAMIC SPACE FOR THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE Located at the crossroads of the International district, the Quartier des spectacles, and Old Montreal, Humaniti is Montreal’s tallest mixed-use community. It includes a luxury hotel, rental units, restaurants, boutiques, and public spaces. Its unique H-shaped design promotes a dialogue and openness across its 39 floors and differing vocations. The multifunctional plaza is an extension of the magnificent Place Jean-Paul Riopelle, named after the internationally renowned Quebec painter and sculptor, that faces the project. The objective was to create a tower that would have a presence in the Montreal city skyline, while also creating a sense of community in a hyper-dense area. Canadian design firm, Lemay, was brought in as lead architect, while sister brand, Lemay + Escobar, crafted the interiors of the hotel.

LEMAY

The objective was to create a tower that would have a presence in the Montreal city skyline, while also creating a sense of community in a hyper-dense area. Its design strikes a balance between bold and sleek. It absorbs and contributes to the energy of its surroundings by reflecting the richness and diversity of its location, while simultaneously creating an identity of its own. Open and generous, it creates a unique environment where multi-sensory human experiences abound. Humaniti responds to the different scales and limitations of the urban context, while reshaping the public realm of the project in both the streetscape and its vertical space.

THE BLADES From the center of Place Jean-Paul Riopelle, one can see two narrow blades that split. The tallest blade has a truncated shape, paying homage to Manhattan’s Flatiron building. The second blade appears as though it splits off and falls from the monolith. The breathtaking effect amplifies the experience from the neighboring square, echoing the mist in the central fountain back towards the vertical community.

THE HIVES The hives are a distinctive architectural gesture of the project, reinforcing the vertical city concept. While not visible from the street in their entirety, these prefabricated balconies break the scale of the project to create a domestic discourse. Each hive accommodates approximately four households, similar to the typology found in many Montreal neighborhoods. Their staggered arrangement favors the penetration of natural light within residential units, while attracting the eye through their rhythm and simplicity. The hives’ human scale and well-defined groupings of condos evokes a smaller community feel, while accommodating hundreds of dwellings.

LEMAY “Humaniti has shifted the playing field for mixed use projects in Montreal and Canada, testament to the courage of the development team, and challenges the status quo in numerous ways. It has emerged as an example of how thoughtful and nuanced design excellence strategies can play a part in the success of large and complex developments. Humaniti is key to the resurgence of the city, and a symbol of Montreal’s future as a design capital of the world.”– Andrew King, Chief Design Officer, Lemay

THE HOTEL The 4.5-star Marriott Autograph Collection hotel is spread over 11 floors, and is suspended on a cantilever-shaped structure, marrying Humaniti’s residential and commercial complexes and completing the community’s unique “H” shape. “The project is located in the Quartier International, a few steps from the Palais des Congrès, the city’s iconic convention center, and on the threshold of the historic city centre. It is an iconic, youthful, and vibrant scene, and we therefore wanted the focus to be on fun and joy, and to be very contemporary. We drafted the space with clean lines, and we curated it with eclectic art and furniture.” – Andres Escobar, Design Principal, Lemay + Escobar Inside the hotel, two concurrent design themes are at work: the bold, geometric accents inspired by the sharp architecture of Humaniti, and the softer, tranquil emphasis on the concept of “humanity”.

Nowhere is that better exemplified than in the lobby of the Humaniti Montreal Hotel, as the chandelier, twisted in the sinuous shape of a DNA strand, beautifully complements the high ceilings, geometric floors, and striking ceiling pattern, along with a gold linear partition. The sculptural art pieces displayed throughout the lobby convey a similar contrast between geometry and humanity. The same holistic approach characterizes the guestrooms, with a color palette consisting primarily of rich yellows and deep teals. This fosters a rich balance between the happiness and spontaneity of yellow, and the tranquility and peaceful optimism of teal. The geometric patterns found in the guest rooms, seen both in the carpet and bathroom tile, underscore the overall architecture of Humaniti. These elements provide a vibrant contrast to softer design elements such as the artwork, inspired by mother nature, and the human-like pair of sculptures.

CONNECTING URBAN DWELLERS TO NATURE The vertical community allows residents and visitors alike to enjoy big city living, while connecting with nature, favoring well-being, and striking a dialogue between its residents and the spaces they inhabit. Designed to embrace the surrounding green spaces, Humaniti reconnects urban dwellers with their natural environment. Its design proposes a lifestyle that reduces the need for artificial light in lieu of natural sunlight and views, in an effort to create a sense of serenity in an otherwise dynamic and connected context. The project’s color scheme was thoughtfully selected based on those that can be found in natural spaces, further solidifying the project’s connection to nature. lemay.com/projects/humaniti/

WOODUPP UK

REMARKABLE PRODUCTS FOR MODERN CUSTOMERS Woodupp was born from an idea to create remarkable wood products for the modern customer, one who not only wanted to improve the design and style of their living environments, but also to enhance the acoustic and environmental properties of them. Thus Akupanel was born, an acoustic wooden slat wall panel which invited the beauty and calming essence of nature into homes and workplaces. Creating a new era of design. Since 2017, the beginning of our journey, the company has focused on two major elements. First the creation of a premium product, which would satisfy customers across the world, and secondly building a sustainable production chain. From then, WoodUpp has gone from strength to strength, starting in a small workshop in Denmark, to now selling a premium product loved across the world. With customers installing them as feature walls in private residences, to businesses successfully reducing the acoustics in commercial environments. Something we’ve extremely proud of here at WoodUpp is that we oversee each area of the production process. From selecting the standing trees, all the way through to the distribution of the end product. For us this ensures we produce only the highest quality products for our clients. Additionally, each member of our team has a passion for the raw beauty of wood, which we believe is essential in the selection of the best quality woods. All of our wood is sourced from sustainable forests, as we believe in leaving the forest protected for

future generations. We are also committed to protecting local communities and wildlife as part of our company ethos. For many designers, the reduction of sound can be a monumental task to overcome, so with the introduction of Akupanel, you can easily achieve a significantly improved acoustic environment without significant changes to the original design. Our product is based on working with the acoustic field, which is especially effective in rooms with bare hard surfaces. Where the sound waves will be reflected, instead they are absorbed by the wooden slat panels, creating a calm warming environment. These handcrafted acoustic panels go beyond practical benefits as well, by enabling designers to transform any space into its modern counterpart with no serious building work or renovation for their client. The ease of application provided by the acoustic felt backing also means contractors can apply easily, and adjust if necessary. The luxury quality, smooth veneered lamella strips, offered in a wide variety of colours and varnishes, adapt well to any design and can bring a calming, quiet, Scandinavian feel to almost any space. Our passion to create great products and provide great service has meant a recent expansion into the UK market to meet demand. With our newly established London based warehouse meeting these needs without the hassle of any additional fees. SCHÖCK

SCHÖCK ISOKORB MEETS A NUMBER OF CHALLENGES AT LOTS ROAD Once a neglected industrial site, Chelsea Waterfront in SW10, is being impressively transformed and minimising any risk of thermal bridging throughout has been key. In addition to meeting the relevant Building Regulations, this is also important in meeting the criteria for the impending Future Homes Standard. The Isokorb load-bearing structural thermal break from Schöck offers the ideal solution in meeting all necessary compliances. This is a two-phase development; the first being completed in 2019 and resulting in four riverside buildings and a 37-storey West Tower. The second phase is now well under way with the centrepiece being the old Lots Road Power Station, which first became operational in 1905 and eventually powered most of the London Underground for almost 80 years. The old Power Station is an iconic building and careful refurbishment will result in retention of the external walls, steel frame, chimneys and selected internal steelwork.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 14

SCHÖCK With the Rotunda, the contractor had opted to precast the ‘pie-shaped’ balconies where possible. However, for structural reasons, or because some were too large for precasting (one unit was so large it had to be split into two parts) it was necessary to cast insitu. This presented the Schöck team with load capacity considerations, as well as delivery scheduling challenges involving different sites. There was a major revision also involving the 13-storey Metropolitan Building. Isokorb units T type SQ, were to be incorporated at all levels to bolt the external steel walkways back to the concrete frame. However, there was a late design change to the project, which resulted in the steel walkways being

converted to concrete on all but the first floor. This resulted in a complete review of the structural thermal break requirements and a tie force also had to be accommodated into the design to tie the balcony walkway structures back to the main structural

refurbished residential buildings, one of which is a rotunda.

MINIMISING THERMAL BRIDGING THROUGHOUT Throughout the entire development, improving the performance of the building envelope and minimising any risk of thermal bridging has been a key element in the design detailing. Quite apart from meeting compliance with the Building Regulations, this is increasingly important in meeting the criteria for the impending Future Homes Standard. Thermal bridges are localised areas of the building envelope, where the heat flow is usually increased in

The comprehensive Isokorb range offers solutions for concretea maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. Products meet full compliance with the relevant UK building regulations, have NHBC approval and offer LABC Registration. There is also the security of independent BBA Certification. The requirement that the temperature factor used to indicate condensation risk (fRSI) must be greater than, or equal to, 0.75 for residential buildings, is also easily met by incorporating the Isokorb. Contact Schöck on 01865 290 890; or visit the website at www.schoeck.com for full details of the Isokorb range

comparison with adjacent areas. As a result, the temperature of the interior surface near the thermal bridge is lower and if this area becomes too cold it can lead to condensation. Over time, mould is likely to form, potentially damaging the building structure and even posing a health risk to the inhabitants. The ideal solution is the Isokorb load-bearing structural thermal break from Schöck, which has featured throughout since the start of the development. Primarily the requirement has been for conventional balcony detailing and involved the Isokorb T type K for concrete-to-concrete and the T type SK for concrete-tosteel. The SK is a complete system thermal break and is unique in being the only formally UK approved product that satisfies the load-bearing and thermal insulation requirements for this type of application. There were though a number of special demands as well.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES The prominent corner plot on the site is an L-shaped building with a frontage on Lots Road and a wing extending towards the Creek. The interior features a continuous walkway and at the 90 degree intersection lateral forces had to be accommodated. To resolve the vertical and horizontal reactions a configuration was used that involved the Isokorb type HP (which transfers forces either parallel or perpendicular to the insulation layer) and type Q (for transferring shear forces on supported balconies and recessed balconies). In addition, there was also a slight castellation to the thermal break line, which had an impact on calculations involving the optimum cut lengths of the elements and their required loadcarrying capacity.

FIBRELITE

FIBRELITE CUSTOM-ENGINEERS HEAVY-DUTY GRP TRENCH COVERS FOR PRECAST CONCRETE TROUGHS AT AIRPORT MAINTENANCE FACILITY A third-party engineering and construction company contacted Fibrelite to provide a bespoke GRP composite trench covering arrangement to fit precast concrete service trenches at a UK airport maintenance facility. The concrete troughs had already been sourced, and sizing and specification finalised, making a custom Fibrelite covering solution ideal.

PROBLEM The fact that the concrete troughs had already been acquired prior to Fibrelite’s involvement in the project presented a number of design challenges, as well as those related to the nature of the application. Key design challenges: • Custom cover dimensions to fit existing troughs. • E600 ‘Super Heavy Duty’ load rating essential due to

frequent high wheel loads. • Every third cover required 140x50mm apertures for access to compressed air lines. • Non-standard colour pigment requested. In addition to the above, a strict construction programme was mandated.

SOLUTION Fibrelite proposed a custom, retrofit GRP composite trench cover design which would fit directly into existing troughs. This design was approved by the client shortly after submission.

Covers stepped from 40 to 65mm deep

RESULTS Fibrelite covers enable easy safe manual access to trenches, eliminating the need for specialist personnel or machinery during maintenance or operation (and resultant costs). Key benefits of Fibrelite covers: • Strength to weight ratio: all Fibrelite trench covers can be safely and quickly removed by two people using their FL7 lifting handles. • Easy access to trench services. • Fit-and-forget corrosion-free long-term solution.

ILUMITEX

ILUMITEX: THE SYSTEM OF CHOICE FOR CREATING UNIQUE AND INSPIRATIONAL WALL DESIGNS Manufactured in the UK, Ilumitex is an innovative PVA flake system that is spray applied to walls. The multicolour flake combinations can be used to create customised wall decorative solutions on many different surfaces and materials. It utilises water-based, environmentally friendly paints and has an average life expectancy spanning ten years. Available in bespoke and standard colours and providing options that include the Ilumitextra range of luxurious glitters, Ilumitex is the flake system of choice across the globe for architects and interior designers. The many benefits provided by Ilumitex made it an ideal choice for a large secondary school based in East Yorkshire. Key considerations in choosing Ilumitex for this project was its ability to create a visually attractive space by using a bespoke flake option, whilst also fulfilling many functional and environmentally friendly requirements. Ilumitex was applied to the school’s main corridor and stairway walls, totally transforming the aesthetic of the area. The Ilumitex system is easy to clean and highly effective in withstanding the wear and tear of such a high-traffic

environment. The numerous advantages of a dry flake system were the main appeal when choosing Ilumitextra for a residential apartment complex renovation in Aachen, Germany. Over 800 square meters of the main corridor walls were sprayed using one of the many options from the Ilumitextra range. The strong visual appeal and seamless finish provided by Ilumitextra made it the perfect solution for this five-story housing project. Another project involved an ink manufacturing company based in Grantham, Lincolnshire, who chose to use Ilumitex when redesigning their building. Ilumitex colour reference no. 427 was applied to the walls of the main corridor and stairway along with the walls of a disabled toilet block. A key consideration for choosing Ilumitex for this project was its durability. Compared to other wall coverings and conventional paint, Ilumitex has a much longer life span, therefore significantly saving on future decorating costs. The results have proven to be outstanding, with the owner committed to using Ilumitex in further areas of their property portfolio. The multiple benefits provided by the Ilumitex range make it a very versatile, attractive, and professional wall decorating system for both residential and commercial applications. RVAD STUDIO

VERTICAL GARDEN INCORPORATING NATURE INTO A COMMERCIAL COMPLEX The project’s primary design methodology began with an investigation of the architectural history of bazaars in Iran and the city of Mashhad. Since time immemorial, the unbreakable bond between the city bazaars and the foundations of the economy has led to bazaars taking on an important and consistent role in people’s daily lives. The principal morphology of the design is inspired by bazaars such as Sar-Shoor, Farsh, and Reza. Among the key characteristics of such bazaars is the porch-like entrance hall that, similar to the main portal, guides the pedestrians inside. Individual arches and porches all ultimately lead to the bazaar’s main entrance. Using vaults and arches to cover large openings is yet another visual characteristic of bazaars.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 20

The Kang village un suburban Mash-had was also studied for its historical significance and its notable staircase structure, which takes after the geographical position of the village in the mountain hillsides. The formation of balconies in each house on the mountain slopes, chained together in a layered fashion, has greatly contributed to the core foundation of our layered garden design. Our everyday lives today largely involve social functions and activities in which we participate on a daily basis. To improve an individual’s social life and collaboration with others, one of the most important city design structures deals with producing accessible and appropriate public spaces. In the absence of such spaces in Iran, we decided to put public and social spaces to a challenge and attempt to conceptualize an ideal possible option.

RVAD STUDIO

One of the main ideas in the project’s future design is connections to the city, using pedestrian bridges to create safe and enjoyable walkways.

The project’s principal idea is to present a new perspective on public urban spaces, of which many Iranian cities, such as Mashhad, are in desperate need. Tagh Behesht is located in Mash-had, Iran. The project’s site has great potential to become an urban hub, given its proximity to one of Mash-had’s largest public parks, which encourages and invites visitors of all ages. At the same time, its strategic geography allows for it to become a major attraction for tourists and visitors of nearby countries, given that Nation Park is among Mash-had’s first tourist attractions, inviting many travellers and tourists every year. In light of the project site’s analysis, Mash-had has only a few green spaces, given its area. As the main social hubs, the city’s public bazaars and its business districts are concentrated in the city center, away from green spaces. Therefore, we decided to design a new type of “Commercial Complex” with a more serious outlook towards Mash-had’s public spaces. The presence of adjacent Mellat Park allowed us to clear a visual path to the park in order to create better views and more accessible gateways for visitors. This opening, so-called layered park, is inspired by the Kang village near Mash-had, where ground floor layers are connected to the upper layers using a walking pathway.

any of Iran’s current office building designs. The general typology and shape of this void are such that it is in continuation of the main layered garden, without providing direct public access. The building’s exterior design is inspired by arcs, frequently found in Mash-had’s prominent bazaars, such as Sar-Shoor Bazaar and Reza. The brick mesh crust, as a second shell, blocks unpleasant light from east and west, while still filtering a mild degree of light into the office areas. Water has always been a symbol of life and serenity, and a vital cause for inhabitation. Water is a brilliant influence on producing clear air and breezes, especially in dry and hot areas such as the city of Mash-had. The construction of a small pond in the lower building floors not only allows for cool airflow during hot summers, but also creates a beautiful and enchanting view. www.rvad-studio.com

One of the main ideas in the project’s future design is connections to the city, using pedestrian bridges to create safe and enjoyable walkways. The important principle behind the design of such bridges is to incorporate nature and green spaces as platforms situated in different areas around the project, resulting in a more pleasant experience and a net positive environmental effect. These bridges, acting as pedestrian footpaths, present a new city experience for visitors by creating a different perspective of the city, away from traffic. The flat middle garden, much like a city junction, is the intersection between all suspended pedestrian bridges, which invites the city in and eventually connects the remaining business floors and bazaars. This garden acts as the project’s main connection hub and is the promenade ultimately enabling circulation between the project and the bridges. The public garden floors, much like the bridges, extend available views, improving the relationship between business units and visitors. One of the more interesting components of this project is the suspended courtyards, situated between the office areas and providing a green space for all floors and business units, as well as sufficient and direct light for office spaces. Our main concern in designing such green spaces was to ensure the proper distance between current business units to allow for a beautiful and open landscape; a design concern that has never been considered in

GEORGE BARNSDALE

THE FUTURE OF CONSERVING THE PAST ONLINE CPD WEBINAR ANNOUNCED George Barnsdale has announced its latest online CPD webinar “The future of conserving the past – how to sustainably specify timber windows and doors for conservation projects” on 4th November 2021 at 1pm. Aimed at professionals working in the built environment, the event is perfectly timed to coincide with the COP26 conference which is urging builders to reduce their carbon footprint by utilising embodied carbon in existing buildings. The session considers two sides of the conservation coin – balancing the environmental impact of inefficient historic properties with the need to protect the integrity of the building for future generations. The webinar is part of a series of “how to specify” CPDs developed by the manufacturer and is underpinned by the company’s extensive knowledge and technical expertise. With its own on-site research and development centre at the Lincolnshire factory where the company has been based since 1884, the company prides itself on knowing timber windows and doors inside out. Having always led the way in developing innovative fenestration solutions, the company was instrumental in establishing BS644 and continues to be part of some of the industry’s leading research projects. Having only ever manufactured in timber, it has always been dedicated to finding ways to make timber products last longer and perform exceptionally without compromising on beauty. This is achieved through precision design and engineering, optimising wood treatments and application processes as well as using a vast array of technical thermal and acoustic data to optimise performance. In addition to the products themselves, the company has worked closely with architects, developers and contractors to develop customised solutions to challenging projects where the needs of the client sometimes conflict with those ofPlanning Department. In addition to advising on ways to achieve optimal outcomes that keep the Conservation Officer happy, the company also offers a full installation service for such projects including retained façade projects. Readers of Archetech can sign up at http://shorturl.at/ fsxEF The webinar will also be available on the company’s website after the event at www.georgebarnsdale.co.uk where they can also access “The magic of glass” and “Forest to Factory – the evolution and revolution of timber fenestration. www.georgebarnsdale.co.uk

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES ROOSEVELT SQUARE A NEW SINGLE-STORY CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER (CLT) OFFICE AND COMMUNITY CENTER The design for the new SOS Children’s Villages Illinois and Maestro Cares Community Center exemplifies a unification of SOS’s childfostering mission, with the surrounding family “villages” of the Roosevelt Square community. The prominent corner site along the active Blue Island Avenue, just south and west of Chicago’s downtown area, welcomes engagement with adjacent residential neighborhoods, while presenting a positive and compelling outward image to the public. SOS Children’s Villages Illinois’s Roosevelt Square Community Center is a new single-story Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) office and community center with kitchen space near their Roosevelt Square Village property.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 38

JGMA

JGMA’s design is a physical manifestation of the forward-thinking nature of the SOS Children’s Villages organization. This center is an 11,000 square foot space that serves the children and families at Roosevelt Square Village and surrounding communities. Programs include academic, therapeutic, social, and recreational support; multi-use spaces for community members to connect to public resources and engage in training, activities, and events; and a signature culinary kitchen providing food and nutrition education, as well as job-skills training for the hospitality industry. In addition to the more than one hundred children and families cared for by SOS Illinois, more than 5,000 people from the surrounding neighborhoods are served by the center. JGMA’s design is a physical manifestation of the forward-thinking nature of the SOS Children’s Villages organization. In the roof, solar panels are located to generate direct electricity to the center, reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions. Inside the blue corrugated metal panel, the one-story building creates a dialogue which is fostered between private programming, administrative and counseling offices, and more open, collective, and communal programs: group computer, study areas, community event space, and a learning kitchen. SOS Children’s Villages Illinois is served by public transportation (CTA 60 bus and Blue and Pink rapid transit line stations), automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian access. Through these many modes of accessing the new location, the SOS Children’s Villages participates in and augments the vibrancy of the existing neighborhood. Processional approaches to the building through a public plaza and community gardens also contribute to a sense of arrival, while establishing a positive street presence, clear site circulation, and

community-oriented outdoor gathering. Ultimately, this new center facilitates and encourages community interaction, while providing for safe and comfortable facilities for children, families, and staff. www.jgma.com

Multi-Purpose Bin Lids: More Than Meets the Eye Without Lid

With Lid

With Lid

With Lid

Top/Side/Diagonal

Top

Side

Bins are ubiquitous. If you think about all the places you find them, you very quickly come up with a lengthy list. In and around the home, of course, then offices, commercial kitchens, hospitality and entertainment venues, spas and gyms, public transportation and so on. And then there are all the different purposes bins are put to. Some for general waste, some for food waste, and increasingly common, different bins for different categories of recyclable waste. And then there are bins for sanitary and hazardous waste, too, such as those found in public toilets or the medical waste bins in hospitals and clinics.

All of our bin lids and covers are made of high quality stainless steel with an emphasis on pristine appearance as well as durability. One thing that makes the Sugatsune range stand out from other vendors is our manufacturing process. We have invested significantly in tooling capabilities that allow us to produce all of these different products in large volumes with an impeccable degree of precision and consistency. By contrast, many competitors still finish bin lid components by hand, which leads to slight variations and long lead times for bulk orders.

Bins in so many different places for so many different purposes mean they also come in all manner of different shapes and sizes. And so too do bin lids.

We also use techniques such as stud bolt welding that not only creates an attractive and durable finish, it also improves safety. Having all the edges on all lips around lids and covered smoothed precisely in this way avoids the risk of cut fingers.

It is easy to take what a bin lid is and what it does for granted. Reflecting the wide variety of types and uses, Sugatsune manufactures more than 50 different multi-purpose bin lids and covers. Each type is meticulously designed and precision engineered to be a cut above the ordinary in terms of style, function and reliability.

Our hinged bin lids range includes both horizontal and vertical flaps. Our top-mounted horizontal lids are available in both round and square varieties, ranging in size from 106mm in diameter to 276mm. Our side-mounted vertical lids are larger and rectangular in shape, ranging from 182mm in width to 310mm, and come in top-opening,

bottom-opening and dual side-opening options. Many of our lids benefit from being fitted with a balance weight and our patented soft close damper technology, which ensures the flap closes automatically but also smoothly and silently, avoiding the risk of trapped fingers. In addition, our top-opening vertical lids, which are conventionally pulled forward top open. can be customised by adding a magnetic catch to hold them closed and a push-to-open mechanism which means no external handle is required. We also offer a lockable vertical lid, a useful security feature for any external bins to mitigate against things like fire and bomb risks. As well as hinged lids, we also manufacture open bin covers. Again, these come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A common use for covers with different size apertures is to sort waste for recycling, as different covers will only allow objects of a certain size to pass through. One specific adaptation of our open bin covers is a funnel designed for disposal of liquids, for example throwing away drinks in a restaurant, which can be paired with additional components such as a PVC hose and strainer.

ALUPROF

’SLIDING DOORS FOR CITY AND SUBURBIA’ BY WOJCIECH BROZYNA - MD OF ALUPROF UK There are several design choices when considering the specification of sliding doors for use in a city high rise or in a typical residential setting. Not only are the opening styles important to suit the clients’ needs, but there are also choices

Crucial to all large sliding door installations is the need to have a substantial structure to fix to on all sides. Often the head

which will make the door both look and perform better for longer, if specified correctly.

of the opening can cause issues, particularly on a wide door installation. If there is any settlement of a lintel or structure, this can cause issues with future operability. Live loads should also be considered to ensure that the sliding door does not bind in certain

The types of sliding door can be broken down into two basic operational functions, these can be simple inline sliding, or folding

loading conditions. Colour can also become an issue, such as a dark door facing south, so expansion should be allowed for in the construction. Clear guidance should be sought on these issues

sliding. Inline sliding doors consist of large sliding panels which slide within the door reveal to open the room up to the outside. In their most basic form, they are two sliding panels, normally with one fixed and one sliding. Along with the basic sliding doors, there are ‘tilt and slide’ doors and ‘lift and slide’ doors. These doors offer higher weather ratings than the basic sliding door systems. The ‘tilt and slide’ is basically a large open-in sash which is fully sealed with a centre seal and is locked with multiple points around the frame. The hardware allows the panel to open in and then slide to one side behind the fixed panel. The ‘lift and slide’ offers a lift facility with a large handle once operated lifts the sliding panel up very slightly off the bottom seals and then allows the panel to slide with little effort. These systems can be specified with 2, 3 or 4 tracks allowing the door panels to stack behind each other within the door reveal. There is also the option to hide the door panel or panels into a side wall given the space, to offer an almost clear opening. Sliding folding arrangements allow the doors to ‘concertina’ open, offering an almost clear opening. Doors are stacked perpendicular to the track, either on one side or both sides, depending on their design. These doors can either stack internally or externally, again, depending on the design option. Because of their frame design and ease of installation, they are often specified in home improvement applications.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 44

from the systems company and structural engineer to ensure ease of operation. Given the styles of door available, the choice comes down to visual appearance and practicality. Externally stacking sliding folding doors may not be suitable in a high-rise application due to limited space on a balcony. Sliding doors do offer more clear glazing per opening with much less aluminium visible but may not offer a full opening. With more available outdoor space, sliding folding doors are often chosen for home improvement or new traditional home build or grand designs type projects. Weather performance is crucial, especially in high rise applications. Basic sliding doors often will not meet the exposure requirements of a high rise location but lift and slide doors that rely on their weight once closed to rest weather seals, can offer exceptional weathering capability. Aluprof’s MB-77HS system, for example, offers an impressive maximum Class 4 air tightness when tested to BS EN 12207 and a Class 9A (600Pa) for watertightness when tested to BS EN 12208. This door has also been successfully tested to CWCT standards when used within a high rise facade and is possibly the door style most often chosen by specifiers for high rise use. Key for most designers and specifiers on high rise applications is the threshold arrangement which is to be kept as low as possible

ALUPROF in order not to create a trip hazard. Basic sliding doors and tilt and slide doors will need some form of step or visible frame at the threshold, but the lift and slide only needs a low, or flush threshold, with a groove for a guided roller, the weather seals being carried in the sliding panel. The choice is with the specifier, but the lift and slide door option offers the best combination of ease of use, best use of space, flush threshold, high weather rating and minimal maintenance requirements. Aluprof provide examples of robust detailing to ensure both weathering and thermal performance Ian each product technical manual. In a traditional residential application sound attenuation may not be an issue, but on high rise, particularly on lower levels, an acoustic glass may be required. It is possible to specify systems which can accept thicker acoustic glazing at lower floors and on upper floors revert to a more traditional double or triple glazed unit. This can often be accommodated in one design of a sliding door system. Sound attenuation may also be required through any trickle vents so the accommodation of these larger vents will need to be considered when specifying a sliding door system. With the Future Homes consultation suggesting much lower heat transfer (U values) for doors by 2025, a well insulated systems frame design and capability to carry high performance triple glazed units should be considered. The MB-77HS lift and slide system, for example, can offer a very high insulation capability of up to 0.84 W/(m2K). Consideration should also be made for the replacement of glazing and decided if external or internal glazing is to be adopted. All sliding doors are well equipped today with quality locks that meet PAS 24, however for traditional residential applications at ground floor level, possible additional security is required dependent on the location. Remote control options are also becoming more popular on sliding doors where doors can be opened from a remote control or an application on a smart device. As with all user operated devices, at some time in the future, all doors will require some form of maintenance. It is worth

considering this regarding the availability of parts so, choosing a systems company of repute, such as Aluprof, would be strongly advised. Where space is at a minimum, particularly on high rise applications, there are options of Juliet balconies being specified, but consideration over access for cleaning and maintenance also needs to be considered. A very wide range of finishes are available today along with colours realistic woodgrain effect coatings are available and the ability to dual colour with an inside and outside colour option. Whichever is chosen a minimal cleaning regime should be specified so that the finish will offer a lifetime of use. Crucial to correct specification of these sophisticated systems, it is recommended to always contact a specialist when looking to specify sliding systems for either city high rise or typical residential setting. Getting the design choices right at start can save both a great deal of time and cost later down the project timeline. Here at Aluprof UK we have a team of dedicated support technicians just a phone call or email away. Since setting up the Aluprof Office at the Business Design Centre in London, the company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high-performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the company’s headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply. REYNAERS

MINIMALIST HOME FRAMES SEA VIEW WITH ALUMINIUM GLAZING Nestled away on the Isle of Wight, Island Rest is the perfect hideaway to enjoy the surrounding views. Aluminium glazing plays a pivotal role to seamlessly connect this contemporary home with its environment, while equipping occupants with everyday functionality. Inspired by its natural surroundings, Island Rest offers unique views across the Solent towards mainland England. Helping the building to nestle into its surroundings, the low-profile single-storey pavilion is clad in larch wood, while large expanses of glazing create layers of transparency and reflection, minimising the visual impact on its setting while contributing to the building’s striking aesthetics. Often, a home’s location is mostly a functional consideration. Here, the location has been so influential on the building’s design that its impact can be seen in every aspect. The building maximises the potential of its natural environment to enhance its owners’ family time, emphasising communal areas to provide easy access to the water.

CONNECTING WITH SURROUNDINGS Glazing plays a critical role in softening the barriers between inside and outside spaces. With floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the property, views of the Solent are maximised and natural light floods into each room. Equally, in the building’s communal areas, windows can be opened up to connect with the surroundings and allow easy access to the water. To achieve this, without compromising the building’s aesthetic, a glazing solution with minimal sightlines was required. Offering infinite views, Hi-Finity – an ultra-slim design from Reynaers Aluminium – was selected for the project. Capable of effortlessly moving glass panels of up to 750kg, the system is perfectly suited to large architectural glazing features, without the need for obtrusive framing.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 50

At Island Rest, Hi-Finity is used for various features, from fullheight windows which frame the spectacular views, through to large sliding doors which open up living spaces onto a courtyard and landscaped gardens. James O’Callaghan of structural design practice, Eckersley O’Callaghan, said: “There are many layers to Island Rest which enable the building to blend into and celebrate its beautiful environment. Glazing is a key part of this, enabling the surrounding views to be enjoyed from every room, or opened up to bring the outside in. “We selected Hi-Finity from Reynaers because it delivers everything we needed – from scalability and slim lines through to quality and functionality. The aluminium frames in particular really suit the architecture of this building. Their slender profile size further maximises the presence of the large expanses of glazing to achieve an elegant appearance.” In modern homes, glazing plays an instrumental role, not just in terms of aesthetics and performance, but in the functionality it provides for occupants. Hi-Finity delivers ultimate design freedom, without compromising performance. Find out more at www.reynaers.co.uk

ROCKET DOOR FRAMES

THE RISE AND RISE OF POCKET DOORS Throughout the last 10 years the use of pocket doors in commercial and domestic developments has increased more than 10 fold and the reasons behind this impressive performance are very simple. The basic philosophy of pocket doors is MORE SPACE. If you consider an apartment of 100 sq. m. using pocket doors instead of hinged doors in effect you create almost 10% more usable space. All the space behind the door becomes practical, usable space. Chairs, tables, bookshelves etc. can all be placed in the space that was ‘behind the door’ and with costs per sq. m. increasing all the time this extra space is available at a relatively small cost. Pocket Doors are sliding doors and sliding doors have suffered from the bad reputation from many years ago when they were unreliable and jumped off the tracks easily. The development of a specific product for pocket doors made from steel not wood with enclosed runners that can’t jump off the rails and with all parts maintenance free have revolutionised the market. The steel structure means the system is strong and not subject to the risk of warping and therefore guaranteeing a great sliding action. Your design is not compromised when using Pocket Doors as the smart manufacturers offer their systems to fit UK standard door sizes so you can use your choice of door for the project and it works with the pocket door system too! Finally – PRICE! The cost of steel pocket door systems with the increase in use and therefore production quantities, has been reduced to very competitive levels. Prices that make them almost a ‘no brainer’ when designing new or refurbished areas.

Ecoflo works with a non-mechanical tipping bucket that scatters wastewater across perforated distribution plates. Wastewater drips through these plates and falls across a filter made of coconut husk fragments, creating a physical barrier that cleans wastewater effluent to an even higher standard. After percolating through the all-natural filter, water is then safely discharged into the environment.

brought the Ecoflo Coco Filter to the UK market, to further improve the effluent quality for both residential and commercial projects that require off-mains wastewater treatment. 100% natural, organic and renewable, the Ecoflo uses coconuthusk fragments that are produced by cutting up the husk that surrounds the fruit of the coconut. This mechanical process ensures complete control over the size of each fragment and overall porosity, guaranteeing a uniform filtering medium that delivers a consistently high wastewater treatment performance over time.

With areas of the UK already beginning to stipulate stricter effluent standards for wastewater outflows, the Ecoflo Coco Filter offers an ecologically friendly alternative to replacing an existing septic tank or sewage treatment plant. The Ecoflo Coco Filter can also be specified as part of a new treatment system to fully protect and preserve UK watercourses, streams and nearby rivers. Čeladná has grown in recent years with a number of significant buildings, including hotels and resort type spas. The latest addition in the area is the Tee House apartment project located in a golf and equestrian complex. The aim of the investor was to supplement the offer of services of this area with accommodation facilities and wellness. The authors of the architectural solution were inspired by the Beskydy landscape and also by the clear orthogonal division of the purpose-built buildings of the original equestrian complex. The new buildings are configured in an ‘L’ shape, and are in the approximate position of the former purely utilitarian buildings previously occupying the site.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 56

CMC ARCHITECTS

The volumetric design of the buildings is emphasized by the effort to use as few materials and colours as possible on the facade of the buildings. The new Čeladná buildings respect the original structure and orthogonal division of this place, and urban configuration is also used to enhance the views from the individual residences. The rooms on the typical floors include generously arranged loggias, which are a distinctive architectural element on the facades of the buildings. This is further emphasized by the setback of the basement floor, which makes the main volume of the building stand out. The upper ‘loft’ part of the buildings are designed as a recess, with a significantly overhanging transversely ‘folded roof’. The visually strong architectural element in the roof shape is design to reflect the relief of the surrounding mountainous landscape. The volumetric design of the buildings is emphasized by the effort to use as few materials and colours as possible on the facade of the buildings. The intended concept of the wooden ‘cut-outs and surfaces, contrasting the base of the dark façade, is achieved through the materials palette - Siberian larch, dark grey ALUCOBOND, dark grey plaster and exposed concrete. The pure geometry of the buildings thus becomes a striking part of the surrounding Beskydy landscape. www.cmca.cz

GROUNDBREAKER

TAKE THE LEAD ON LEAD IS AN OLD WATER SUPPLY HARMING YOUR CLIENTS? Not replacing an aging water supply might seem a budget saving option in redevelopment projects, but old lead supply pipes come with their own issues. There is now a clearer understanding of the potential health problems caused by lead, particularly in infants and young children. Lead pipes also degrade, and often provide a lower flow rate of water to the property, potentially challenging the supply volume with the additional demands placed by extra bathrooms or even instantaneous hot water systems. Although the use of lead in plumbing has been banned in the UK for more than 50 years, in some areas up to a third of older properties are still receiving their water through their original lead pipes. Replacing these with a modern water supply pipe is the only totally secure method to reduce lead levels in the water supply. Traditionally, any lead replacement program requires major excavations outside a property and causes huge disruption within. Resulting in mess and disturbance to householders over several days. This disruption has often been the cause of users’ reluctance to have the work undertaken

REPLACE LEAD WATER SUPPLY PIPES IN UNDER 2 HOURS…NO MAJOR EXCAVATIONS, MINIMAL DISRUPTION WITH INSUDUCT® INSUduct® is an innovative solution. Minimising disturbance, time and cost. Unlike traditional methods, INSUduct® allows the new water service to be routed up the external face of the building and connected to the internal plumbing above ground level, whether this is the ground floor or upper storey. In multi-occupancy properties INSUduct® allows multiple supply pipes to be installed, as it is designed to provide frost protection for up to three 32mm OD water pipes installed to the exterior of the building.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 58

INSUduct only requires one simple core drilled hole through the wall, at an appropriate point to connect with the internal plumbing. This enables most water supply replacements to be completed within a couple of hours, without the traditional mess and disruption to the householders or occupiers. There is also little impact to the exterior appearance of the property, as the INSUduct system provides a neat, clean finish to the job. Groundbreaker products are designed to provide long lasting and effective thermal protection to water pipes and fittings outside the thermal envelope of a building. Carefully fabricated to provide long lasting and effective thermal protection to water pipes and fittings in external situations, the products exceed British Standard 5422 and all relevant Water Regulations for frost protection and is on the “approved list” of most UK water companies. WIREFRAME FROM MILLIKEN Milliken’s latest carpet tile collection ‘Wireframe’ has been designed to encourage experimentation and individuality. It was also created with ease of use in mind – both aesthetically and economically – with an accessible price point. There are countless ways Wireframe can be used, including to effortlessly transition from one colour to the next organically, with no hard lines. Milliken’s creative team produced Wireframe with the needs of designers in mind. Alison Kitchingman, Director of Marketing and Design explains: “We appreciate that in these challenging times many designers are fully stretched and don’t necessarily have the time or head-space to commission a bespoke floor. However, they still want to create dazzling and unique flooring designs for their clients. So, we set about to create a collection which can be applied in countless ways with the scope to create a unique floorplane every time.” For further information visit www.millikencarpet.com

ARK SHELTER

SHELTERS FOR HOTEL BJORNSON Ark-shelter was asked to build a cluster of forest apartments for hotel Bjornson. The investor had a clear idea of one side oriented double cabins, placed in the surrounding of the main hotel building, which made our design solution relatively straightforward. We consider the concept of placing the modules between the trees ecological, not only for the tree preservation, but also for the minimum contact of the modules with the ground due to raising them on stilts instead of laying on the classic concrete plate foundations. This allows the landscape to continuously flow under the building and breathe, while the green roof of the module doubles the biotope that lays beneath it.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 60

The apartment design was based on the client’s idea of the outer shell, one sided orientation and views, that had to fit quite a large program. All buildings/cottages comprise of two independent modules, each with its own independent apartment consisting of a bedroom-living room, children’s room, entry hall and a bathroom. Each of these two separately functioning units can be connected into one by sliding the partitioning wall of the living rooms, creating a spacious central space where two families can meet and socialize. Two of the apartments function as mirrored and shifted modules with smaller spatial changes to them, such as larger bathroom or extra balcony, enriching the apartment diversity.

ARK SHELTER

Two of the apartments function as mirrored and shifted modules with smaller spatial changes to them. Cottages are placed in the forest, facing away from each other into the undisturbed scenes of the forest or the ski slope. It is the immediate contact with the ski slope that creates the unique atmosphere of the resort. Guests find themselves in the forest and at the same time in the middle of the ski resort Jasná thanks to the disposition of the modules which ensure privacy and peace within arm’s reach of the main hotel building. We also designed an extension of the hotel’s restaurant and a forest wellness built from four Ark-shelter modules that form a cluster of saunas and relaxation rooms with a masseur.

We have a good collaboration with hotel Bjornson and hope that soon we will be able to present the next building stages which will finalize and connect the existing parts of the area. Further to this, we have a reputation for always putting the customer first and as a result have won National Customer Service awards in recognition of this. With the upcoming change to regulations that will effectively ban gas boilers, the popularity of electric boilers is on the rise however there are still many questions from consumers over their effectiveness. Electric Boilers can be run from renewable resources such as wind generated, tidal and solar power which means you can run your boiler completely free of CO2 emissions. Electric Boilers come in various forms such as Electric Combi Boilers, System Boilers and Flow Boilers. Electric Boilers are 100% efficient, meaning if you consume 1kW of electricity, you will receive 1kW of heat. Along with this, electric boilers are easy to install as there is no requirement for a flue as there is no combustion process within the boiler. Owing to the ease of installation, it means that the overall cost of the installation is significantly less than other alternatives. EHC also provide Electric Heaters and Radiators which in term offer complete peace of mind for reliability, performance and safety that are available in a host of styles and outputs. A highly effective custom designed heating solution based on 50mm NB spiral wound Finned Tube was agreed.

For centuries, churches have been heated by circulating hot water from a boiler through large diameter cast iron pipework. What Turnbull and Scott offers now is a much more effective hot water based heating solution where those thick plain pipes are replaced with a Finned Tube system that utilises a much narrower pipe with a spiral metal ‘fin’ wound around it.

This much narrower tube required only 25% of the water volume used by the old system with its 100mm pipework resulting in a much faster warm up time The pre-existing floor trenches were identified as suitable to house the new Finned Tube system and over 200m of this specifically designed Finned Tube was

TEMPLE OF (CITY) FABRIC A FABRIC OF INNOVATION AND VERSATILITY While yarns are weaved into fabric and knitted into garments that protect our bodies, building materials (e.g. wood, bricks, steel etc.) are put together as architecture, keeping us from the weather and in warmth. The awarded projects of this year’s HKIA Annual Awards are the indispensable components, the ‘yarns’ or ‘bricks’, that form the foundation and bedrock of Hong Kong Architecture, encouraging peers to keep up with the standard of excellence in generating our city fabric. To strike a symbolic analogy, we used the content of the awarded projects as the ‘materials’ to construct the exhibition space. A series of ribbon profiles are used to create a myriad of roofscapes through a gradual transformation from the first ribbon minimally depicting the origin of architecture - ‘The Hut’, to finally a ‘Temple’, and ultimately compiling into a full cityscape.

ARCHETECH - PAGE 70

The entire exhibition is created using ‘Tyvek’, a fabric of innovation and versatility; the synthetic material acts as a medium to introduce this year’s winning buildings to the public. Tyvek is a flashspun, highly-dense polyethylene synthetic fibre. Not only is it commonly used to protect buildings during construction as it has very good water-proofing properties, the story of its discovery began when a researcher working at the DuPont textile lab by chance noticed some white fluff coming out of a pipe. As technology improved, the fluff was spun at high speeds, and ultimately created a durable and sustainable fabric. Such echoes a spirit of experimentation and innovation that is essential for architecture and design. Strong against tear but can easily be tailored for design, Tyvek fabric also symbolizes the determination and adaptability of the architecture profession, resonating the qualities found in all of our finalist projects.

NAPP STUDIO & ARCHITECTS

To strike a symbolic analogy, we used the content of the awarded projects as the ‘materials’ to construct the exhibition space.

Project content (text, photos, drawings) is printed onto Tyvek that is directly hung and draped from the ceiling truss. The space is exaggerated and amplified by the false perspective created by the stepping drapes, together with the gentle transparency of the fabric, forms a beautiful photogenic spot for event highlights, while at the same time creating a warm and embracing atmosphere for visitors to learn and understand more about this widely adaptable and innovative fabric that is actually extensively present in architecture, as well as in our daily lives. Not only can fabric be made into garments, it can also be used to create space. Textiles, not only form a critical part of the Mills’ history; but also shares a deep connection with architecture. PLASWOOD

HOW PLASWOOD IS HELPING TO EMBRACE A CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Katherine Lorek-Wallace, General Manager of Plaswood, a manufacturer of recycled plastic lumber, says informed material choices will be an important part of enabling builders to work to establishing a circular economy as the industry moves to developing more sustainable building practices. A significant development in the drive to create a more sustainable world has been the move towards a circular economy as an alternative to the traditional linear version of ‘make, use, dispose.’ Whereas with the linear approach, raw materials are collected, transformed into products and ultimately disposed of, under circular economy principles, the lifecycle of a material is extended as long as possible, with recovery, recycling and regeneration at the end of each service cycle. Since a substantial part of the circular economy requires keeping products in use for as long as possible, a proactive way to make this happen is to focus on continued usability when purchasing building material and products. Plastic lumber already provides an ideal demonstration of the circular economy in action, as it is manufactured from recycled plastic removed from the waste stream.

quality checks as they pass through the remanufacturing process that sees the plastic shredded, washed, blended and melted, ready

In terms of applications, the material is extremely versatile being suitable for a variety of products such as joists, decking, rails, fences, boardwalks and also outdoor furniture. And when it comes to longevity, plastic lumber has several additional benefits. It is fully weather-proof and easy to clean, which makes it more hygienic than traditional timber alternatives.

for extrusion into lumber profiles. And while the recycled plastic profiles are ideal for many requirements, from the landscaper looking for a planter to the builder constructing a revetment wall, all products can also be recycled and remanufactured multiple times over, thus continuing the circular economy journey.

The material is also resistant to attacks by insects and has no risk of rotting or degrading with age, meaning it remains entirely durable and long-lasting even in the most challenging of environments. Just as important, plastic lumber is maintenance free and does not require painting or chemical treatment at any point in its life span, saving both time and cost in comparison to the upkeep of more traditional materials. The process of turning plastic waste into useful second life products involves the collected items going through a series of rigorous

PART OF THE SOLUTION Achieving a comprehensive circular economy is understandably a long-term challenge, but it is something that industries need to aim for in order to ensure we create a world fit for future generations. In the construction world, the adoption of plastic lumber may be a small step but it a significant one, and one that will also find particular favour with consumers, given the current media focus on the problems of plastic waste and pollution. In this way, plastic

waste becomes less of a problem and more part of the solution. In demonstrating a practical use for used plastic through plastic lumber to replace conventional materials, builders can easily demonstrate a positive sustainability commitment – and just as important they have a functional and reliable product that will deliver many long-term benefits for both them and their customers. www.plaswood.eco

INTERPAVE

MEETING NEW PLANNING REQUIREMENTS FOR TREES Extensive tree planting and retention of existing trees in developments, with provision for long-term maintenance, has just become a priority with new government policies taking effect. Concrete block permeable paving offers an important opportunity to help satisfy these requirements providing irrigation integrated with SuDS, hard surfaces and urban design – as the trade association Interpave explains. The 2021 ‘National Planning Policy Framework’ (NPPF) states: ‘Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new streets are tree-lined and that opportunities are taken to incorporate trees elsewhere in developments’. However, measures are needed to nurture and allow trees to mature and deliver their real potential – including net carbon storage, urban cooling through shading and evapotranspiration, biodiversity and public wellbeing. So, the NPPF also requires that: ‘appropriate measures are in place to secure the long-term maintenance of newly-planted trees, and that existing trees are retained wherever possible’.

PAVING AND TREES IN HARMONY Urban trees and paving have traditionally been seen as in conflict. But this is not the case with concrete block permeable paving (CBPP), a key sustainable drainage (SuDS) technique to reduce flood risk and make cities more liveable. CBPP offers unique opportunities to collect, attenuate and treat rainwater runoff, removing pollutants before irrigating green infrastructure. Unlike conventional impermeable hard landscape materials, CBPP allows the same pattern of run-off transfer to the ground as natural vegetation, allowing water to reach tree and shrub roots, despite providing an attractive hard surface above. Local planning authorities now need to incorporate long-term tree maintenance measures in their planning consents and a straightforward spatial solution, such as permeable paving providing irrigation, offers a holistic multifunctional solution.

BENEFICIAL RELATIONSHIP The benefits of CBPP for trees while retaining accessibility are recognised by the current Code of Practice for accessibility in the

Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new streets are tree-lined…and appropriate measures are in place to secure the long-term maintenance of newly-planted trees.’ external environment, BS 8300-1:2018, which states that: ‘Tree grilles should be avoided. Smooth or paved permeable surfaces should be used wherever practicable’. Permeable paving can be laid level and still avoids puddles without the need for drainage gulleys. It provides a safe, firm, pot-hole free surface for everyone – including wheelchair users and people pushing prams. Two decades of experience in the UK demonstrate the long-term performance of CBPP with minimal, if any, maintenance. CBPP generally comprises an upper layer of concrete blocks with permeable jointing and laying course, over a sub-base and other structural layers of permeable material for water storage. Interpave is currently exploring new ways of applying CBPP to optimise gradual supplies of water for tree irrigation at both levels, as well as effective interaction with tree planters and proprietary tree pit systems. Paving layouts are also being considered to maximise the permeable paving catchment area for tree irrigation, particularly outside the protective tree-canopy zone. Interpave would be pleased to hear from anyone considering integrating permeable paving and trees on projects (email: chris. hodson@paving.org.uk)

INTERPAVE This approach is exemplified in Bridget Joyce Square, London, an important regeneration project designed by Robert Bray Associates (RBA) in conjunction with McCloy Consulting for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, which won the top prize at the 2017 Landscape Institute Awards. Here, a typical, adopted asphalt street and adjacent parking areas were transformed for community use with CBPP overlay shared surfaces and tree-planted raingarden basins – an exemplar for future urban landscapes. The basins provide water storage for SuDS to reduce overloading existing drains, as well as for irrigation.

WELL-ESTABLISHED GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE Interpave revisited the project in August 2021, around 5 years after completion, and noted that trees and other green infrastructure were healthy, substantial and particularly wellConcrete block permeable paving in conjunction with green infrastructure transforms Bridget Joyce Square, London.

PLATFORM LIFTS THE CHOICES AND THE DIFFERENCES Lifts are key to the vertical circulation of people in any public building. Whether it’s a simple change in the level where it’s not possible to provide a ramp, or the building has two or more floors that people need to travel between. Lifts also are invaluable when it comes to ensuring easy access for those with impaired mobility across multiple storeys. Lifts that move people fall into two categories, passenger lifts or platform lifts. The options can be endless (and confusing!) when it comes to platform lifts but these types of lift can be grouped into five broad categories.

LOW-SPEED LIFTS/ HYBRID LIFTS Also called low pit lifts, these are wall-mounted or structuresupported lifts that have the look and feel of a traditional passenger lift, with the same doors, cabin and operation, but travel at a reduced speed.

move the user(s) on a guarded platform from one level to another.

CABIN LIFTS

Also called inclined platform lifts, these lifts have a platform that follows the curve of the stairs and are only suitable for one user.

These lifts are built in a structure, with passengers travelling in a cabin with walls, a floor and a ceiling to give it a more enclosed feel with the lift operation being one-touch.

ENCLOSED PLATFORM LIFTS These lifts are in a structure with a moving platform and control panel moving up inside the structure.. The lift operation used here is constant pressure.

OPEN PLATFORM LIFTS Typically used over short lengths of travel these lifts vertically

WHEELCHAIR PLATFORM STAIRLIFTS

All these access lifts provide disabled access in low-rise buildings where a passenger lift is not available (or it is impractical to install one), and are based on the number of people you want to move to and the travel distance. These lifts can also be used for passengers with buggies and luggage, subject to weight limits. THE PAVILION A NEW TIMBER-FRAMED BUILDING, THE PAVILION, WHICH STANDS AT THE GATEWAY TO QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK IN STRATFORD, HAS OPENED ITS DOORS AND IS SET TO BECOME A NEW LANDMARK MEETING PLACE IN EAST LONDON The Pavilion sits in the heart of Endeavour Square within Stratford City Business District’s (SCBD) mixed use neighbourhood, International Quarter London (IQL). Enjoying unrivalled views across London and the 560 acres of greenspace at the Park, the Pavilion is located yards from East Bank, where an increasing cluster of world-leading universities, arts and cultural institutions are basing themselves alongside an array of commercial, technology, manufacturing and retail businesses. Stratford is fast transforming into one of London’s most exciting new destinations to visit, work, live and learn. The Pavilion was designed by award-winning international contemporary architects ACME. Conceived as a ‘vertical piazza’, it has stepped levels arranged on all sides in the form of stairs, balconies and amphitheatres that encourage exploration, providing several look out points and sitting places.

It has stepped levels arranged on all sides in the form of stairs, balconies and amphitheatres that encourage exploration.

The public is invited to enjoy views of the park from the public rooftop terrace. The building houses a visitors’ centre for the Park, and D&D London’s latest hospitality concept, Haugen, a delicatessen, brasserie and café inspired by Alpine dining, with interiors designed by award-winning creative studio Afroditi. Split over three floors, the Pavilion is an extremely lightweight timber structure that sits on top of a DLR tunnel with limited allowances for additional weight or foundations. Constructed using cross- laminated and glue-laminated timber panels, only shallow concrete foundations were needed. Timber has a much lower carbon footprint than more traditional materials and provides warmth and tactility to the interior. Elsewhere parametrically controlled timber fins have been used to clad the undersides of the projecting slabs to create a continuous soffit that invites and guides visitors to the roof. Native wildflower planting on the rooftop terrace and green spaces enhances the site’s biodiversity, creating a food source for pollinators alongside a nesting box for bird and bat species.

AXONOMETRIC Energy to the building includes a connection to the Stratford district heating and cooling network and external lighting has been designed to minimise light pollution. The Pavilion has achieved an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM score of 92%. It is the second building at IQL to reach this exceptional standard, which places it in the top 1% of all newly constructed commercial buildings. The opening of the Pavilion heralds a new era in the development of International Quarter London and the continued transformation of Stratford as a mixed-use destination for London. The Pavilion’s completion will mark a milestone in the way that Endeavour Square is enjoyed by the public and surrounding communities. The site demonstrates Lendlease’s commitment to Mission Zero, the United Nation’s initiative, as a 1.5 degree aligned company, working towards being net zero carbon by 2025, and absolute zero by 2040. Using materials with low embodied carbon is a key step in Lendlease’s journey to eliminate Scope 3 emissions and achieving its 2040 target. MASTIC ASPHALT SUCCESSFULLY TESTED TO NEW EUROPEAN FIRE STANDARD With the fire rating of waterproofing systems under increasing scrutiny since the Grenfell fire disaster, it is becoming increasingly important for specifiers and building owners to consider the fire classification of waterproofing systems. The Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) has recently tested its Recreation Duty (RD) Grade Mastic Asphalt system incorporating glass fibre tissue underlay to the European fire classification standard EN 13501-1. It successfully achieves a fire classification rating of Bfl-s1, confirming the product is flame-retardant with very limited smoke development. MAC Director Malcolm Grinstead said: “At present it would seem few waterproofing systems have achieved the Bfl-s1 fire classification rating to the European Standard, and this confirms Mastic Asphalt is a great choice for specifiers who need to demonstrate excellent fire ratings for waterproofing products.” Recreation Duty Mastic Asphalt is ideal for use on roofs, access walkways, balconies, terraces, podiums, plant rooms and stairways. It is UK manufactured, carbon neutral and recyclable.

BERRY SYSTEMS

THE WATTS HOUSE PROJECT BERRY SYSTEMS PROVIDE CLADDING AND FAÇADE EXPERTISE FOR AWARD WINNING CAR PARK DESIGN The eye-catching aesthetics of the Watts House project at the University of Brighton played a big role in winning the prestigious Best New Car Park category at the British Parking Awards in 2020. Berry Systems designed the cladding and façades that were key to securing this accolade. The car park features perforated panels in six different colours, as well as a Green Wall Trellis System to create outstanding aesthetics on the exterior of the structure. The panels are arranged with lighter colours at the top so that the façade lightens as the height of the building increases, reducing the perceived mass and volume of the building and softening it against its backdrop. Planter boxes are also incorporated at the top of the façade to fit in with the green aesthetics of the project, another factor that contributed to it being named Car Park of the Year. With years of invaluable experience, Berry’s extensive industry and product knowledge enables them to work closely with architects right from the early design stage and manage projects from conception to completion – and not just for cladding and facades. Berry has grown in recent years to expand its scope of services into a wide range of industries, including perimeter security as part of the HS Security group. Berry’s knowledge of such a wide range of industries means architects and specifiers can benefit from end-to-end solutions for cladding and façade projects, as well as perimeter security and car park projects. The Watts House car park was the perfect example of Berry Systems’ cladding and façade design expertise and showed how they use their extensive knowledge of the supply chain to provide support all the way through to installation. through its innovative construction, which features a top layer of toughened glass, spacer filled with 90% argon and a low-E laminated glass layer. This is combined with a lightweight external white powdered coated aluminium frame and internal frame of reinforced PVC. Every element of the SKY Flatglass’ construction has been developed with thermal efficiency in mind. This includes a polyester upstand that is fully insulated for weathertightness and an inner layer of low-emissivity (Low-E) glass that reflects infrared and ultraviolet light from inside the building. This prevents the light from escaping, without minimising the level of light that enters, controlling the high thermal performance of the product, while simultaneously maintaining an attractive design. An optional third layer of glass, which can also be solar control glass, can be specified upon request.

Unlike many competitor products that use polycarbonate, the smoke vent features a single leaf flat glass sliding cover, offering a functional yet aesthetic approach to natural smoke ventilation, particularly for exposed areas where a hinged opening may not be suitable.

The standard size of the new SKY Flatglass smoke vent is 1000 mm x 1500 mm, which provides a 1m² clear vent area. Bilco UK is also able to offer this product in special sizes to meet individual specification requirements through its team of inhouse designers, engineers and technical estimators.

The streamlined flat glass enables the smoke vent to also be utilised as a rooflight, flooding interior spaces with natural light. When used in conjunction with a fixed ladder, it can also be utilised as a roof access hatch, opening to 180° for safe and secure access.

PROSEAM ENERGI-ROOF AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION TO BOTH ARCHITECTS AND HOUSEBUILDERS In many sectors of business and industry, technology is moving at incredible speed. We now have paperless offices and do business remotely by text, scan and email. So why do we still have men on building sites laying bricks and clay tiles just as they were 50 years ago? Is it a case that old habits die hard? Do houseowners literally prefer to invest in ‘bricks and mortar’? Or are there simply no alternatives to the traditional ways we roof and clad our homes?

ARCHETECH - PAGE 94

The recent growth in modular build and the use of SIPS panels in certain sectors of housebuilding seems to have encouraged the use of other less traditional roofing and cladding materials, as we look to build more quickly and efficiently. Metal roof panels have been around for years and any walk in the country is likely to feature corrugated tin sheets on farm sheds. Corrugated sheets have largely been replaced by the more efficient trapezoidal or ‘box’ profile sheeting and these can be used to good effect on new build or refurbishment projects.

YEOMAN SHIELD

MAKING SCHOOL MAINTENANCE EASIER WITH YEOMAN SHIELD WALL & DOOR PROTECTION The buildings of schools, universities and colleges around the country are constantly put under huge amounts of wear and tear from high levels of traffic. Bags scraping against walls and the heavy thoroughfare between lessons means that walls and corners start to deteriorate quickly. With this in mind, Yeoman Shield have designed a range of wall and door protection products for schools to provide a longer-lasting solution to school interior design.

MAKING CLEANING EASIER Yeoman Shield wall protection products make maintaining good hygiene in schools and universities easier than ever before. Providing an easily wipeable surface, the “rigid” PVCu materials they are manufactured from also do not support the growth of mould and bacteria, allowing for an overall more hygienic environment in the school and easing the burden of maintenance.

WITHSTANDING WEAR & TEAR The heavy traffic of school buildings can cause high levels of wear and tear to walls, doors and corners; however, the regular cleaning of schools can also have an impact on a building’s interior. Frequent scrubbing can degrade the interior of a building in addition to the scrapes and scratches caused by traffic. Yeoman Shield wall and door protection is designed to withstand everyday cleaning for years on end, as well as being durable against high levels of wear and tear from traffic.

redecoration costs and school building maintenance. This allows you to allocate more budget to other areas of the school which need attention, rather than redecoration costs draining school funds.

SAVING VALUABLE TIME Time is always valuable for school staff. Making cleaning easier and reducing the need for redecoration saves precious time for school building and maintenance managers, making for less stress overall and more efficiency in managing workloads.

DECREASING REDECORATION COSTS

Yeoman Shield are currently offering a 10% discount on wall & door protection products until the end of January 2022. To find out more about products and discounts get in contact via tact 0113 279 5854 or email schools@yeomanshield.com for more information!

TECHNOLOGY AND TRADITION SHH DESIGNS NEW OFFICE PREMISES FOR KWG BIOVALLEY, IN SHANGHAI SHH has been commissioned to create modern interior spaces for KWG BIOVALLEY, a medical research and development centre in Qingpu, Shanghai. The research centre is part of a new commercial park for ‘Health and Innovation’ in Qingpu district and specialises in pioneering medical technologies including stem cell technology as well as traditional Chinese medicine. The two different medical methods come together on site and are reflected in the contrasts between technology and tradition, architecture and natural landscapes. The new commercial park consists of five office towers linked by a retail podium along with eleven low-rise buildings bordered by green zones with access to a recreational promenade along the adjacent canals that connect to the Yangtze river.

The design language of natural materials is consistent across all areas.

The brief is to deliver a series of lobbies, contemporary work areas, executive meeting rooms, open-plan workspaces and public spaces across the five towers. The design marries Western influences and natural materials to create visual connections with the surrounding landscape. The interior colour palette and materials draw inspiration from the Five Elements theory of traditional Chinese medicine: water; wood; fire; earth; and metal. The design language of natural materials is consistent across all areas. The lobby and lift areas are bright and minimal, with granite tiled flooring, natural stone lined walls and discreet green touches. Oak timber panels, stone and full height metal fins line the main lobby walls creating strong visual connections with the building’s façade while in the adjacent lift area dark bronze panels wrap the walls and ceiling creating a strong contrast and depth within the space. Brendan Heath Director Hospitality & Commercial Interiors says: “We designed a range of different zones to accommodate meetings, focussed work, team collaboration and socialising. The interior palette is a nod to the natural landscape outside and the

VASTERN TIMBER

TIME TO CONSIDER BRITISHGROWN TIMBER THIS YEAR TIMBER HAS BEEN HARD TO OBTAIN, BUT THE ANSWER IS CLOSE BY, SAYS TOM BARNES Timber products, including roof battens, structural timber and timber cladding, are in high demand this year, and it is well known

are at play. This year global demand hit a record high in a postlockdown housing boom, resulting in many construction materials

becoming extremely difficult to obtain. Added to that, over 80%

Thermal modification is a toxin-free process resulting in a very

of the timber used in the UK is imported, and these supply chains have been impacted by Brexit, covid and a changing climate. In the years to come, an increased focus on the carbon footprint of construction will surely lead architects to specify more sustainable materials, leading to yet more demand for wood. For all these reasons, finding external cladding timber can be challenging at present. Favourites like Canadian cedar and Siberian larch are in very short supply, while prices for these products have risen by 50–100% so far this year. But the good news is that many locally grown timber species are well suited to external cladding, and these are often cheaper, and more readily available, than imported alternatives.

BRITISH-GROWN TIMBER CLADDING There are many timber species grown in the UK that are suited to exterior applications. Native western red cedar, larch, oak and sweet chestnut make excellent cladding due to their natural durability. Modern modification processes, such as thermal modification can be used to transform locally grown ash, poplar and sycamore - which wouldn’t normally be suitable for cladding into a durable cladding that we call Brimstone. This is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to imported hardwoods. It’s gratifying that many customers are choosing our locally-grown, thermally-modified timber for its environmental credentials. Thermal modification is a non-toxic process that heats timber in controlled conditions, producing a stable, durable material that resists rot. Modified timbers have their own characteristics, for example our product Brimstone, which is made of thermally-

and durable, but it can be a little brittle so requires more care

stable and durable cladding material. Since 2016 we have used this process to transform our locally grown hardwoods into an innovative product called Brimstone®. Beautiful and long-lasting, Brimstone is perfect for external cladding, but best of all, it’s grown here in our own woodlands. The range includes Brimstone ash, Brimstone poplar and Brimstone sycamore.

BIOBASED MATERIALS Minimising the use of carbon-intensive materials such as concrete and steel and using bio-based materials like timber could be key to a low-carbon economy. With these pressures affecting the whole planet, we in the UK cannot rely on importing 80% of the timber we use. I believe that we must aim to be more self-sufficient, which means planting more trees and using more locally grown wood. Let’s use these timber shortages as an opportunity to start making the switch.

CASE STUDY Much Wenlock, Shropshire Recently named one of ‘Britain’s Greenest Streets,’ this development for a local housing association comprises twelve homes of various sizes, all clad in Brimstone poplar, the thermally modified, British grown timber cladding. Timber homes in Shropshire are nothing new, but this exemplary development of energy efficient, affordable homes uses locally sourced, natural materials combined with passivhaus principles and modern processes to excellent effect. The housing association commissioned leading Passivhaus and sustainable architects, Archetype, for the project. UK sourced natural materials were used, including locally quarried clay roof tiles, local lime render and locally grown cladding. Treehugger called the project ‘radical simplicity’ but we call it common sense. Find out more about our range of locally sourced timber products at Vastern.co.uk *Tom Barnes is MD of Vastern Timber, which produces timber cladding, flooring, structural timbers and sawn hardwoods from timber grown in Britain.

FOUR HOUSES IN ONE A SET OF FOUR APARTMENT BUILDINGS ON A COMMON BASE IN A TRADITIONAL RESIDENTIAL AREA The building is located in a quiet residential Masaryk district, full of quality pre-war functionalist architecture. The volume and spatial solution is based on the character and proportions of the nearest buildings. Residential complex consists of four blocks of different sizes - apartment buildings - which protrude above the terrain from a common underground base. The set of buildings thus naturally fits into its surroundings. The site with a south-west orientation and an attractive view over the Brno Exhibition Centre to the Kohoutovice forest was the reason for the maximum orientation and the opening of the residential complex into this direction. The apartment buildings descend along the slope, their height decreases towards the southern tip of the plot.

The unifying element of the whole building is the concept of greenery, which will stand out more and more over the time.

The pair of buildings along Neumannova Street has four floors above the ground and one underground floor, which are connected by a staircase hall with elevators. Two lower apartment buildings have three and two floors above the ground, and with their smaller volume they follow the size of villas along the lower part of the plot. Between the sidewalk of Neumannova Street and the upper apartment buildings, a semi-private living space with a seating area has been designed. On the roof of the parking base between the individual buildings is a private courtyard with gardens connected to the apartments. They are separated by low hedges - gabion baskets planted with hornbeams. The set of buildings is built as a combined brick and reinforced concrete structure. The facades are clad with clinker brick slips. The smooth surfaces of the fixed and sliding panels made of aluminium sheets provide contrast to the structured surface of the brick slips.

NEW AUTOMATIC STORM LOBBY IMPROVES VISITOR ACCESS

NEW SANICUBIC 1GR FINDS FAVOUR IN IRELAND

Staron’s award-winning supermalleable surfaces are an extremely hygienic, durable and practical choice for a multitude of applications.

A privately owned golf club, Thonock Park, in Lincolnshire, has recently completed an extensive refurbishment to the main building. Updating the front entrance, TORMAX worked closely with Window Concepts to deliver fully automatic access into the main reception via a contemporary, all-glass storm lobby. Comprising of inner and outer sliding doors that operate in tandem, heat-loss from the building is significantly reduced during wet and windy days. The entire re-fit had to be completed to a very tight timescale. With this in mind, TORMAX recommended powering the doors with their reliable 2201 door operators, which benefit from a patented component fasting mechanism, making them extremely quick and easy to install.TORMAX UK Ltd has specialised in the worldwide design and manufacture of cuttingedge door automation solutions for over 90yrs.

A powerful black water pumping solution from Saniflo is helping to provide waste discharge solutions for buildings across Ireland. The floor-mounting Sanicubic 1GR is a product from the Zehnder Pump range, now part of the Saniflo SFA Group. Highly rugged and durable and available as a single or threephase option, the 1GR is designed to pump waste up to 39m from domestic and commercial buildings. The compact unit has a capacity of 55 litres and multiple inlets for connection to up to four appliances and is IP65 verified. A hard-wired control box is supplied as standard for early warning of any issues. Just 3-mins away from Dublin Castle is Restaurant 777. With restaurants closed to indoor diners through the Covid-19 pandemic, the owner of the restaurant decided to convert a yard space to gain extra tables for outdoor socialising.

WINDOW & DOOR OPENINGS WHY DO THAT?

BOWATER DOORS INTRODUCE FIRESHIELD

ECO-FRIENDLY, HARD WEARING, AND PERMEABLE

Why use roll DPC requiring buildinginto the inner skin, when preformed cavity trays are available? Selfsupporting trays eliminate building-in and can be supplied ‘biased’ to takeup the cavity width encountered.

FireShield is a fire door solution tested to BS EN 1634 that is also third party certified by the BM TRADA Q Mark scheme. Keeping residents safe and secure remains the key driver for the development of our entire product range. FireShield is tested to PAS 24 and is accredited by Secured by Design, the Police Preferred Specification.

SUDwell™ Resin Bound Permeable Paving and driveways are not only beautiful to look at, they are immensely practical too. A resin bound installation is Eco-friendly, hard wearing, and permeable. This means you get a product that is both good for the environment and your property. The aesthetically pleasing SUDwell™ trademarked and patented Permeable paving system, when installed, allows water to pass freely through the surface. SUDwell™ resin bound products are an ideal choice for your driveway, patio or path. SUDwell™ Resin Bonded Driveways are made from low maintenance, hard-wearing, UV stable materials. Having UV stable resin means that your driveways, paths and patios will not discolour because of the sun’s UV rays. Resin Bonded Driveways are incredibly quick and easy to install. The smooth surface is dry and usable within a couple of hours of installation.

Result - compatibility and consistent protection.Furthermore, the DPC height protection requirement in a cavity is usually 140/150mm. Blockwork mortar beds every 225mm limit convenient buildingin opportunities, whereas selfsupporting trays do not - and can be packaged per dwelling. If a drip lip is required to window and door heads in accordance with NHBC 6.1, a preformed tray can ensure it’s there, whereas roll DPC cannot. Accompanying performance warranty for your benefit and that of your customer. Ask to receive the latest Technical Manual.

UFCM HELPS LENDLEASE INCREASE EFFICIENCY AT BUILD

CINDERELLA INCINERATION TOILETS

Global real estate group Lendlease chose commercial heating specialists UnderFloor Climate Management (UFCM) to improve the flexibility of the heating installation at a prestigious Manchester project.

Cinderella incineration toilets burn biological waste at high temperatures, leaving only an insignificant quantity of fine, harmless ash, amounting to the equivalent of about one teacup for four people during one week of use. The toilet may be used around 70 times before emptying is required.

UFCM is a technical design service and product supplier of water-based underfloor heating systems for commercial developments. Lendlease changed the original specification for the apartment heating systems across the Potato Wharf development to decrease the required installation time of the underfloor heating. The project build plan was redesigned around the installation of the UFCM designed underfloor heating system and the time-saving, auto-balancing manifold.

Visit www.ufcm.co.uk or email ufcminfo@polypipe.com.

Cinderella incineration toilets are currently installed by over 60,000 users worldwide. Waste is burned in an integral combustion chamber. The harmless gases from this combustion are dispersed through a vent pipe. In contrast with other toilet systems, incineration toilets eliminate all waste on site without the need for connection to the main sewer or a septic tank.

INTRASYSTEMS

CREATE AN ENTRANCE SPECIFYING ENTRANCE MATTING FOR EDUCATION & HEALTHCARE SCHOOLS, COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES Remember the first time you went to school? You probably don’t recall the entrance matting (Unless you tripped over it…). However, it’s easy to overlook the key role entrance matting plays in creating a safe and welcoming entrance to your educational establishment. With most educational projects being centrally funded, budget is often limited or very tightly managed, meaning that specifications for this sector can be one of the most challenging to get right. A key consideration when specifying for a school, college or university is the requirement to work with an aesthetically attractive system, that can be ‘tweaked’ to meet a plethora of challenging environments. From muddy boots to scooter wheels, creating a suitable entrance matting specification for the modern education facility is a worthwhile and rewarding exercise. Download our RIBA CPD Core Curriculum specification guide to Entrance Matting for Schools, Colleges and Universities here.

HOSPITALS & HEALTHCARE One of the many things that the COVID pandemic has highlighted to us as a society must be the critical importance of our healthcare sector, and the crucial need for effective hygiene and infection control. Entrance matting is the first line in the defence against dirt and contaminants entering your building. A well specified matting system, correctly positioned within an entrance will effectively remove up to 100% of foot and wheel-borne moisture and dirt. Remember, visitors to facilities such as Hospitals, Clinics and Surgeries will often have mobility or vision issues that need to be considered when you are specifying a suitable matting system.
