INTERIOR DOORS MAKE THE WHITE CHOICE! Selecting the right internal door for your interiors project, has always been important. Whether from a practical, design or budgetary perspective, interior doors are integral to well-designed living spaces, providing space functionality and reflecting general ambience and mood within rooms. Although we live in a world where colour pervades, sometimes simplicity in design can often be the secret to creating timeless appeal. One way to achieve purity within your decor, is with the use of flush white doors. White, with its inherent ability to rejuvenate and add a fresh clean look to modern interiors is widely recognised, however it does not mean that scope for differentiation is limited. The White Collection by Vicaima, demonstrates that taking this singular tonal path can also open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Although we live in a world where colour pervades, sometimes simplicity in design can often be the secret to creating timeless appeal.
Bringing together some truly distinctive finish options in white, the White Collection by Vicaima, demonstrates that this fundamental hue is not actually a single colour, but has in fact a myriad of shades with both smooth and textural surfaces. Furthermore, doors can be embellished to allow even greater design flexibility, by the addition of decorative face grooves and inlays, or even glazed patterns. There are many inspiring finishes within the collection, however some of the most notable include: Lacdor in Satin White, with its tough, ultra-smooth curtain coated and UV cured lacquered paint finish;

COSMOCITÉ: A CONTEMPORARY SHOWCASE FOR THE SCIENTIFIC CULTURE OF METROPOLITAN GRENOBLE ARCANE ARCHITECTES AND CARDIN JULIEN The architectural consortium comprised of ARCANE Architectes (France) and Cardin Julien (Canada) is delighted to unveil the new Centre de sciences Cosmocité, built on the Grands Moulins de Villancourt heritage site in Pont-de-Claix, Isère (France). The building’s bold design, conceived by architects Jean-Yves Guibourdenche and Jean-François Julien, is in line with the museum concept developed by scenographer CREO, in close collaboration with La Casemate and the scientific community. Cosmocité aims to preserve the industrial memory of the Grands Moulins de Villancourt site, which was an important part of the industrial and human heritage

Cosmocité aims to preserve the industrial memory of the Grands Moulins de Villancourt site. of the urban agglomeration and the municipalities of Echirolles and Pont-de-Claix in the 19th and 20th centuries. With its location at the municipality’s northern entrance, Cosmocité is the cultural cornerstone of Ville de Pont-de-Claix’s urban renewal.
The commission Taking up the exact placement layout of the demolished building, which could not be reused, the architects created an assemblage of volumes that link the region’s industrial past, embodied by the white volume, with the contemporary scientific focus of the new institution embodied by the black volume. The translucent, glossy white volume houses the passageways and related spaces, while the matte and opaque black volume houses all spaces dedicated to the dissemination of scientific content: the planetarium, immersion room, and permanent exhibition hall. Recalling the universe’s great mysteries and humankind’s place in the cosmos, the black volume’s monolithic, dark, and mysterious quality invites onlookers to fathom its scale, and to reflect on its infinite expanse.
Inside, the vertical and horizontal corridors are bathed in natural light, and offer views of the surrounding landscape. The volumetric design reflects the building’s function and contributes to the site’s global message: science that’s welcoming and open to all.
The program Cosmocité houses: - An 80-seat planetarium, equipped with a stargazing simulator. The role of a planetarium is to teach and popularize astronomy and space science for both school and family audiences. - A permanent tour based on two themes: “EARTH” and “COSMOS”. An immersive 3D room, with interactive floor and wall screens - A 14-metre-high Foucault pendulum - A variable activity space: children/youth audience

ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS area and a modular room - Additional facilities: reception, services, administration, and logistics - A roof terrace overlooking the Grenoble basin and its surrounding mountains - The facility is designed to welcome around 57,000 visitors per year, including 20,000 school children.
The planetarium Circular and inclined at 10°, the space can be accessed via a vision adaptation waiting area and an acoustic airlock. With a capacity of 80, including 4 for people with reduced mobility, it is equipped with reclining seats, providing a 360° view of a semi-spherical screen, 13 meters in diameter. It is lined with a circular technical gallery and a data centre.
The permanent exhibition The architectural team called on the Montrealbased digital studio CREO to create the Cosmocité scenography. To meet the numerous requirements of this ambitious project, CREO put together a multidisciplinary design team, who worked in close collaboration with the project’s Grenoble-based scientific committee, as well as with Centre de Culture Scientifique, Technique et Industrielle de Grenoble. Cosmocité’s highly interactive exhibition is designed to answer fundamental questions such as: Is the Earth unique? Is it possible to predict everything? Spread over two floors, it covers everything from the birth of stars to the causes of earthquakes. In addition, a 14-metre-high Foucault pendulum spans the building to demonstrate the Earth’s rotation.
A bioclimatic design The building has been designed to balance the space of the west-facing garden with that of the eastern forecourt. The hall and staircase are glazed to capture free energy from the sun, and to encourage the public to use the staircase to climb to the upper floors. However, this solar energy is controlled by screen-printed glass to prevent overheating. To the west, the building opens onto the garden and the Vercors landscape, while the cantilevered planetarium hall shelters it from the summer sun.

Interior characteristics The acoustic comfort has been carefully studied to avoid any sound transfer between spaces, as well as towards and from outside areas. Summer thermal comfort is ensured by: - A heat inert cement structure; - Efficient solar protection: 50% screen-printed glass on the east facade, sunbreaker structures on the west facade, and external solar shading; - Openings for natural ventilation; - Air quality is ensured by a double-flow system, with adapted flow rates and filters.
Energy optimization Energy efficiency is primarily about reducing the building’s thermal requirements, which is made possible via a compact construction and a highperformance envelope. The building’s main structure is in reinforced concrete, which is insulated from the outside to eliminate thermal bridges and the associated risk of condensation, and to benefit from an inertia conducive to summer comfort. The building envelope’s performance has been designed to be well below the French regulatory threshold in terms of energy requirements. Heating
is provided by way of a district heating system, and cooling by way of heat pumps.
Landscaping To the east of the building, overlooking Cours SaintAndré, an urban stone forecourt accommodates the varying flow of visitors drawn to this site and its activities. To the west, a garden and its outdoor amphithéâtre form a buffer zone between the parking lots and the Centre de sciences. To the south, a conserved hundred-year-old cedar tree serves as a reminder of the city’s continuing renewal. www.arcane-archi.fr/ |

COMMITMENT TO MEETING LOWCARBON ALUMINIUM DEMANDS BY WOJCIECH BROŻYNA - MD ALUPROF UK What exactly is ‘Sustainability’? Possibly the most quoted explanation comes from the United Nations ‘Brundtland Report’ produced in 1987 which states that the definition of sustainability is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. To better understand how we can bring about sustainability, a popular view of sustainable development can be referred to as the ‘Three Pillars of Sustainability’. Here, Sustainability rests on the three pillars of, Environmental, Social and Economic development, that all work together to achieve the sustainability goal. Whilst this view of sustainability is a global one, one that countries are encouraged to follow and develop for the future of our planet, how are we translating sustainability into construction today and in particular aluminium facades? Aluminium, since its commercial debut in the 1880s, has shaped our world in so many ways, in fact, if the metal did not exist, much of what we take for granted today, would never have been made possible. Aluminium is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, making up 8% of the total, with the majority of this ore, bauxite, which lies very close to the surface. Once dubbed ‘the wonder metal’ for its light weight and high strength, its discovery continues to push the boundaries of innovation today. Aluminium has always been viewed in simple terms as ‘sustainable’ as it is infinitely recyclable with no loss of characteristics. Using just 5% of the original energy to produce aluminium, recycling is well established, so much so, 75% off all aluminium ever produced is still in active use today. With ‘clean’ scrap value almost that of new prime aluminium, the industry cannot get hold of enough scrap aluminium to meet the current demand for recycled content. With an estimated total discovered and undiscovered bauxite resources across the globe to be in the region of 55 billion to 75 billion tonnes we will not run out of new, prime aluminium anytime soon. So where is the downside? Like all metals, aluminium carries high embodied energy, described today as embodied carbon. This has been historically quoted as high as 20 tonnes of carbon for every tonne of
ARCHETECH - PAGE 20
aluminium produced when energy from fossil fuels is used to produce new prime aluminium from bauxite. So aluminium smelters have traditionally been located next to renewable energy resources, such as hydro power for decades in order to use cheap renewable energy sources. Now the industry is turning to hydrogen power to further reduce embodied carbon. Aluprof are proud to be leading this lowcarbon revolution, using a greater mix of recycled content to prime in aluminium can reduce embodied carbon to a very low parameter of just 2.79 tCO2e (Tonnes of CO2 equivalent) per tonne of aluminium. These lowcarbon billets are manufactured at the group’s lowcarbon Kęty line at the factory in the southern Polish town of Kęty. These low levels of emissions have been achieved thanks to the use of the company’s cuttingedge plant for the manufacturing process and utilising a high content of secondary raw materials in the form of recycled aluminium scrap at an average level of 65%. Whilst to some this may seem to still be a high carbon price to pay, consider the carbon savings using a product containing aluminium during its long life span, compared to alternative materials which can create more carbon in use during their lifetime. Architects understandably want to specify lowcarbon aluminium for future projects but with global aluminium recycling running at about 33% of all aluminium output, to source 65% scrap for specific projects will often mean extended lead times should be catered for. The Aluprof UK field team are always on hand to advise specifiers on what can be achieved
EDITOR’S CHOICE
Aluprof are committed to further reducing carbon emissions in production that will occur over the coming years using new and emerging technologies. for any given project and how further carbon savings can be achieved through the supply chain. Not being complacent at this level of carbon content, Aluprof are committed to further reducing carbon emissions in production that will occur over the coming years using new and emerging technologies. But, we need also to consider aluminium’s considerable benefits in use, particularly in facades. Whilst we know of aluminium’s light weight and its ability to be easily shaped through various processes, its long life in use is what impresses specifiers and clients alike. One of the oldest first uses of aluminium in fenestration is the well documented Bodleian Library in Oxford. Aluminium windows from James Gibbons were installed in the ‘New University Library’ at Oxford University 85 years ago, further highlighting aluminium’s extraordinarily long service life. The building, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1937 and 1939, was a much needed addition to the Bodleian Library whose collections are used by scholars from around the world. The windows were inspected and chemically cleaned ten years ago and they are expected to continue performing well into the current century.
One of the latest projects to be completed with an aluminium facade is the ground breaking Forge in London. The Forge is the first commercial building constructed and operated in line with the UK’s Green Building Council net zero definition and energy reduction targets. It comprises two new office buildings and a public courtyard. Located on Sumner Street, The Forge is a Landsec office development located just behind Tate Modern in London and is one of the most innovative projects in London, pioneering several new construction methods fit for the decades ahead. Breaking new ground, the project is the world’s first large-scale office scheme to be built using a standardised “kit of parts”, in an approach known as ‘platform design for manufacture and assembly’ (P-DfMA), which applies the advances made by the manufacturing industry to construction. Aluprof UK were invited to take an early design role in developing a unitised facade system, the MB-SE120 which has a UW value of <1.3 W(m2K) that meets the P-DfMA specification pioneered by architects and engineers Bryden Wood. Construction was led by Sir Robert McAlpine and Mace, working together in an innovative joint venture (JV) partnership. Using the latest anodising and fabrication technology the life expectancy of the facade on the Forge can be assured for many decades ahead - a testament to aluminium’s continuing sustainability. Aluprof are proud to be one of Europe’s largest aluminium systems companies. Specification support is available through the company’s website at www.aluprof.co.uk, directly from their UK head office in Altrincham or from their London office at the Building Design Centre by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005.

By cleverly manipulating the reflections of light on metal surfaces, an enchanting ambiance was created, evoking a dreamlike atmosphere. The interior design embraces a holistic approach, merging architecture and interior seamlessly. The various geometric forms within the building become an integral part of the exterior façade, showcased through glass curtain walls. This dynamic display of different materials and colors adds visual interest.
Metallic textures, such as aluminum panels and mirror-finished stainless steel, are extensively used throughout the interior to create a fashion-forward and futuristic atmosphere. The interplay of large geometric forms injects a sculptural quality and a sense of playfulness into the space, stimulating curiosity and a desire for exploration among visitors. www.aoe-china.com

COPPER INSIDE AND OUT Copper has seen a dramatic change from its traditional place in roofing historic buildings to a thoroughly modern external skin for contemporary architecture. But its role as an interior surfacing material is growing as well, with a surprising diversity of natural colours, patterns and textures. Copper and its alloys – such as brass and bronze – enjoy a long heritage as the metals of choice for interior design, contributing a distinctive tactility to door furniture and handrails, and a visual richness to lighting and other fittings, championed by leading designers. But, increasingly, they are being applied as high-quality finishes for walls, doors, ceilings, stairs and elevators, highlight surfaces, bars and counters, exploiting the materials’ unique performance characteristics.
Alloys of copper have also grown in popularity. They include Nordic Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin which gradually changes to a dark chocolate brown when used outside, and Nordic Brass, which can also be supplied pre-weathered. An innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc – Nordic Royal – enjoys a rich, golden through-colour which remains very stable, just developing a matt surface, but no patination, over time.
Particularly important today, copper’s inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces.
SAFE SURFACES
Examples of Nordic Décor Surfaces
Particularly important today, copper’s inherent antimicrobial qualities make it ideal for touch surfaces. It is also non-toxic and safe to handle, as well as non-brittle and predictable to work. With a melting point of 1083˚C and ‘A1 (non-combustible material)’ fire classification to EN 13501-1, copper is inherently fire-safe and, therefore, rated ‘Class 0’ surface spread of flame, making it suitable for wall and ceiling surfaces in all areas. But there is more to architectural copper than meets the eye, particularly in terms of recyclability, sustainability and long-term performance – wherever it is used.
LIVING MATERIAL Modern factory-applied surface treatments can provide straightaway the natural oxidisation and patination of copper surfaces that develops over time in the external environment to selected levels, and these can be used internally as well as outside. Essentially, they bring forward the environmental changes without taking away the integrity of copper as a natural, living material and are not coatings or paint. Some of the processes involved are very similar to those taking place naturally outside and utilise copper mineral compounds, not alien chemical actions. These processes enable designers to determine both the colour and intensity of Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper or Nordic Green, Nordic Blue and Nordic Turquoise patinas for each project from the start. As well as a solid patina colour, other intensities can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material as ‘living’ surfaces.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 24
SURFACE TREATMENTS Most recently, these copper surfaces and alloys have been made available with the Nordic Décor range of mechanically applied surface treatments, adding an extra dimension. These latest developments in abraded and embossed surface treatments are particularly suited to interior design, adding another level of close-up visual richness, texture and tactility.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
Nordic Brass perforated ceiling and expanded brise-soleil
Nordic Décor includes embossing to provide regular patterns of raised or recessed forms, some also abraded to reveal highlights of the base material colour for additional design effects. Grindings are also available with linear, cross-hatched or curvedswirl hairlines to give distinctive matt surfaces. These surface treatments, combined with the natural living colours of Nordic Copper and its alloys, offer real design freedom, adding a richness and opulence to any interior design.
FORMS AND SYSTEMS Apart from traditionally-jointed, rolled material supported by a substrate, various other forms of Nordic Copper are increasingly being explored by innovative designers. For example, material can be supplied in profiled sheets or extremely flat honeycomb panels, and it can be pressed to provide surface textures and modulation. It can also be perforated, expanded or woven as mesh giving varying degrees of transparency. When used internally, of course Nordic Copper can be used in an even wider range of forms and systems, free from the constraints of weather-proof detailing.
Photo: Peter Bennetts
One particular recurring architectural theme is material continuity, blurring the boundaries between outside and in, with external copper cladding simply continuing past fully-glazed walls. When used outside, it’s important to remember that on-going changes to copper surfaces, including pre-oxidised and pre-patinated as well as most alloys, will continue over time depending on the local environment. Again, this does not generally apply to interior applications and designers should understand and, indeed, celebrate the divergent developments of internal and external copper. FUTURE BUILDING 9 MODERN IDEAS TO TRANSFORM YOUR NEXT PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT The Government may have delayed the measures put in place to create greener residential properties, but the mix of public demand for lower energy bills and smarter homes, along with the increasing cost of traditional construction, means that investors need to be thinking about new ways to deliver projects that will give them the best possible returns.
it comes to making their properties greener and as a result future-proof. A number of measures can be taken for a more environmentally friendly building including the installation of solar PV panels and less reliance on gas with air source heat pumps.
These are some of the techniques property investors can implement in future building projects in order to keep up with competition and produce properties built to withstand the changing environmental and technological landscape.
On new build projects, carefully designed facades that incorporate solar shading and fenestration can help manage the internal temperature in a more natural method. Additionally, the use of recycled and ecofriendly materials for construction will further help lower the carbon footprint of the building and add to the green credentials of the development.
1. Sustainability
2. Multi-Purpose Development
Recent changes to the planning and building regulations are pushing for a greener building industry and considering the potential changes coming in relation to the EPC rating of properties, it will benefit property developers to get ahead when
More and more people are living in the city centre. Manchester, like many other cities, has undergone vast amounts of high-density residential developments. There is an opportunity for some of these places to have a dual purpose instead of
ARCHETECH - PAGE 26
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS 4. Smart-Tech
Modular construction promises higher quality construction and can be delivered on-site quickly and affordably. creating one building for working and another building for living. Imagine a building with a fluid building programme: during the day it is a place of work, in the evening parts of the same building are transported into social spaces for people to mingle and socialise. The same building can be used for community-based activities during the weekends for families with kids and for growing vegetables in the city, all while also being a place to live on the upper floors.
3. Modular Construction The use of modular construction has been slow in the UK compared to other European Countries. Modular construction promises higher quality construction and can be delivered on-site quickly and affordably. Modular construction consists of separating the building into modular blocks that are constructed in a factory. As these are built in a clear factory environment that is not affected by weather conditions such as rain and below-freezing temperatures, it allows for higher quality construction that can be built quickly. It is transported on site and erected or installed on site with little site work required to complete the project.
One way to stand out from the crowd is to incorporate smart-home technology into your next development project. This could include keyless entry, touchscreen controls for managing heating, cooling, lighting and audio in all rooms, and remote monitoring of CCTV and other features when away from home etc. More and more technologies are now integrating with smartphones allowing everyone to easily control and access their properties systems anywhere even if they are on holiday. Modern technology can also allow the monitoring and managing of building energy to ensure the most efficient use of energy and minimisation of waste.
5. Green spaces City living lacks interaction with green spaces, in particular, in apartment buildings. This is something that was reinforced during the COVID lockdown in 2020. Adding green spaces provides colour, ambience and life to a dull place. Green spaces can be incorporated via rooftop gardens, balconies or terraces, internal gardens and vertical green walls and bring an invaluable improvement to living quality.
6. Flexible Layouts One of my personal favourite potential elements of a modern project is a flexible layout. A project that introduces open-plan living spaces with flexible layouts, to cater to modern lifestyles, will always be highly sought after and a unique proposition for buyers. These can incorporate ‘Japanese style’ sliding

partitions to help divide spaces at different times of the day. This type of space can also integrate dualpurpose furniture. For example, a shelving unit that transforms into a dining table
This will attract pet lovers and establish a niche sector but careful consideration will have to be given to the selection of materials, finishes and colour schemes to ensure durable materials that can withstand the demands and requirements of pets.
7. Creative Spaces Most residential units are designed with standard room types such as lounges, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Why not incorporate quirky creative spaces into your next development? If you are targeting families then perhaps a playroom or nursery might be beneficial and if you have the freedom for other ideas why not include studio space, a home office, a gym, a library, a computer room, a cinema room, or even a workshop.
8. Pet-Friendly Development Another way to set your development apart from the rest is by making them pet-friendly. These could include designing places for pets to live, sleep and eat.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 28
9. Disabled Use Having some residential units specifically designed for less abled wheelchair users can help capture a different market. To make the dwellinghouse DDA compliant design will need to consider level access, wider door openings, wider corridors, larger bathrooms and a kitchen with a lowered countertop to allow wheelchair access. This could be coupled with assisted living developments for the elderly generation that is independent but that needs some assistance in everyday living. www.createitstudios.co.uk

THE SPIRAL THE FIRST COMPLETED COMMERCIAL HIGH-RISE IN NEW YORK Named the world’s Best Tall Building in its category by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat at the organization’s annual conference last week, The Spiral visually extends the landscape of the nearby High Line Park up and around The Spiral’s exterior, allowing access to green outdoor terraces from each of the building’s 66 stories. Developed by Tishman Speyer and built by Turner, The Spiral has officially opened its doors to major companies including Pfizer, Debevoise & Plimpton, Turner Construction, and HSBC, among others. Located on West 34th Street between Hudson Boulevard and 10th Avenue, The Spiral neighbors the elevated High Line and Bella Abzug Park on

Manhattan’s west side. The commercial high-rise, designed by BIG in collaboration with Adamson Associates and structural engineer WSP Cantor Seinuk, measures 66 stories and 2.8 million square feet, reaching a height of 1,031.5 feet. The Spiral is pursuing LEED Silver certification. The tower is BIG’s first completed supertall, and first completed commercial high-rise in New York. From street level, the tower draws the eye upwards to the ribbon of greenery that extends the High Line beyond West 34th Street and into the Manhattan skyline. Reminiscent of a conservatory, the tower’s glass panel façade offers passersby a look into the building’s bright and spacious lobby, adorned with

As a gesture to the building’s surroundings, The Spiral’s lobby incorporates seven different metals to honor the area’s industrial history, with floor panels measured to the exact dimensions of the precast concrete planks spanning the High Line. The Spiral slowly reduces in volume as it rises, following the zoning envelope of the site. Its stepping language resonates with the design aesthetics of classic Manhattan skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center, while its slender proportions and use of modern materials and detailing speak to the design features of contemporary high-rise architecture.

along with vertical trellises with English and Boston ivy that keep their leaves through the winter. The plant palette differs on each side of the building depending on sun orientation and endurance against high-velocity winds.
With approximately 13,000 square feet of outdoor space, a landscape of The Spiral’s size has never been installed at or above 300 feet elevation in New York City. Most of the plant species on the ground cover are native to the American prairie, making them resistant to high winds and droughts.
As The Spiral ascends, each floor’s accessible terrace offers impressive views over Manhattan, the Hudson River, and New Jersey. Select floors offer a doubleheight amenity space and the option to connect adjacent floors via a grand staircase, suggesting an alternative to elevators and encouraging interaction among colleagues. On the 66th floor, The Spiral offers its very own ZO Clubhouse, reserved exclusively for people to gather, connect, and recharge in the private lounge or open-air terrace.
As the building rises, a second layer of shrubs and taller bushes that blossom in winter are introduced, and finally, the landscape is crowned with single- and multi-stem trees that flower as early as February,
The Spiral promotes a contemporary workplace where nature becomes an integrated part of the office environment and spatial features are continuously adaptable to the changing needs of its occupants. To foster a connection to the outdoors and support The Spiral’s interior foliage, a generous ceiling height and specially selected exterior glass coating enables a deeper incursion of natural light. The building’s water management system collects overflow rainwater to treat and redistribute throughout the tiered landscaping, allowing it to save millions of gallons of water annually. This not only promotes sustainable irrigation - it also further cements The Spiral as a green addition to the Manhattan skyline. https://big.dk

SCHÖCK THERMAL BREAKS AND NEW DOWELS FOR MAJOR SWANSEA OFFICE DEVELOPMENT RC construction, namely heat loss, damp and mould formation, a variety of Isokorb thermal break types were incorporated. Those most extensively used though are the T type K and the XT type K. Both are load-bearing thermal break elements for concrete cantilevered balcony construction, transferring moments and shear forces. They have 80mm and 120mm insulation thickness respectively.

A major new high-tech office development in Swansea city centre is fast taking shape. The five-storey building, known as 71/72 Kingsway, is a carbon-zero development with two underground levels. It is part of a major transformation of the area and will provide 114,000 square feet of flexible co-working and networking office opportunities for 600 jobs in the innovative tech, digital and creative sector businesses. The offices will feature state-of-the-art digital connectivity and integration with smart city technology, conference and meeting facilities. Balconies, a green rooftop terrace and atriums are also incorporated. The building detail required thermal insulation of the highest standard, along with high-performance expansion joints. With its comprehensive range of structural thermal breaks and the new Stacon dowel product, Schöck was ideally placed to meet the necessary requirements.
There were a number of large beam forces to transfer on the upper levels and the newly launched Schöck Stacon dowels were used for the first time in the UK. This new dowel, the type SLD, is really compact and as the anchoring bodies have been reduced in size, it has the advantage of enabling higher loads to be installed in thinner slabs and walls, optimising onsite reinforcement. Stacon has been awarded UK Technical Assessment (UKTA) along with fire protection classification R 120. It is fully supported with Scalix design software too, the first web-based application for the design of shear dowels.
A dependable and fully compliant product range The Schöck Isokorb range of structural thermal break solutions is the largest in Europe and in the UK helps projects meet full compliance with the necessary Building Regulations. In addition to the Isokorb type used on this project, there are also solutions for concrete-to-steel, steel-to-steel, renovation projects – and even a maintenance free alternative to wrapped parapets. All products have the security of independent BBA Certification, which provides NHBC approval. Contact Schöck on 01865 290 890; or for full details of the Isokorb and Stacon products visit the solutions page on the website at www.schoeck.com/en/solutions
There were technical challenges though The main issue was the retaining wall in the basement and ground floor area, which put axial pressure onto the structural Isokorb thermal break elements. As a result, it was necessary to calculate both the compression from this force and the moment resistance based on the residual capacity of the in-situ thermal breaks. At the second and third floors, the placement of the column grid was unconventional and converse to the usual external-to-internal arrangement. So the elements were in effect installed in the opposite direction to what would normally be anticipated. To combat any effects of thermal bridging throughout the

KAMENICE VILLAS COMBINING THE BEST OF URBAN AND COUNTRY LIVING In recent years, the village of Kamenice has experienced an influx of residents and the associated construction boom. The original village is being urbanized and urban-type architecture is emerging, especially in the center of the village. The proposed plot is located very close to the center of Kamenice village, next to the main urban axis of the village – Ringhofferova Street. The surrounding development has a diverse character – there are family houses, cottages, and apartment buildings. On the north side, the plot is adjacent to the main pedestrian route that runs through the entire village. The two villas thus create an imaginary gateway to the center of Kamenice. The shape of the plot is trapezoidal with longer sides parallel. The shorter ones, towards the roads, diverge. We used this geometric motif in the basic urban composition of the proposal and placed two almost

identical square-plan buildings on the plot, with their external facades parallel to the shorter sides of the plot. The buildings themselves are rotated by 13 degrees from each other. An irregular communal space with original mature trees is created between them. The principle of rotating the buildings is also reflected in the shape of the curved parking space, the roof, and the funnel-like widening access road. In terms of urban operation and function, the site is divided into longitudinal strips with different functions. Along the eastern perimeter, a road leads to the parking lot. On the other side of the parking lot, there is a pedestrian walkway that traverses the entire site from north to south, connecting Ringhoffer Street to the pedestrian walkway on the north. ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS for private housing. The central space with original mature trees evokes the feeling of a park between two residences and creates a semi-private space serving the community life of the residents. Private front gardens are designed in the peripheral parts of the residential zone, in direct connection with the groundfloor apartments. The central idea of the project was how to place two apartment buildings in an environment of mature greenery, which would not exceed the surrounding buildings and would be in harmony with their surroundings. Two similar villas with square floor plans and diagonally pitched roofs sensitively respond to the surrounding buildings and establish a universal principle in the unorganized development of the village’s wider center. The dynamic facades and the wooden cladding evoke a civilized and welcoming expression of the new buildings, materially connected to the surroundings and nature. The villas are designed as single-staircase buildings – a typology where all apartments on a floor are accessible from one vertical communication space. Both villas have three floors, with the top floor as an attic. There are 8 apartments in each villa, ranging in size from 2+k’ette to 4+k’ette. Horizontal structural elements of the buildings – strip footings, ceilings, balconies – are monolithic reinforced concrete, while the load-bearing walls are made of brick blocks. DOORS, WINDOWS & FITTINGS
RESTORING FAITH IN TIMBER WINDOWS As a result of poor practices in the 1970s and 1980s, people lost faith in timber fenestration. Along came uPVC and aluminium – the “maintenance-free solution” to forever windows! Despite huge advances in timber window technology ensuring they last 60 years or more and the obvious environmental benefits many people, including architects still find themselves doubting Thomases! But, benefits of modern paints and stains alongside good design can have a seismic impact on the longevity of timber windows and doors.
What does Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” have to do with timber windows today? Da Vinci was the master of experimentation who tried a new technique to paint the moment that Christ told his Apostles that one of them would betray him. The scene would typically have been painted on wet plaster, but this fresco technique was fast-drying and would have required him to work quickly. Da Vinci wanted to work slowly so he applied his pigments to a dry plaster wall.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 48
The result was a painting that didn’t adhere to its surface due to the technique and Milan’s humidity. The Last Supper was destined not to last without intervention.
What can we learn from this? A lot when it comes to our own use of paints and coatings for timber fenestration. From surface preparation, to allowing for location and humidity, paint is only as good as its substrate.
DOORS, WINDOWS & FITTINGS
Architects and builders can help to increase the durability of timber windows by designing the building to reduce exposure to extreme weather.
You can have an excellent paint product, but if you don’t apply it properly, it won’t perform as it should. Companies need to take a comprehensive approach incorporating a raft of processes to ensure the paint performs at optimum levels. It starts with the timber. Manufacturers such as George Barnsdale use engineered timber because it is more stable and provides an excellent base for the coatings When the frames arrive at the paint shop, they go through a unique four stage process starting with two preservative coats applied with a flowcoater. This method ensures the coating gets into all the hard-toreach areas. Once the preservative has been applied, it is time to paint. George Barnsdale was the first manufacturer to use a robot to apply a high film build base spray coat and a top coat. Whilst the material preparation and the paint processes are critical to the performance of the paints, in order to ensure a window or door will last 60 years or more, you have to build in good design too. George Barnsdale has been at the forefront of research into joint designs with the BRE and was the first UK manufacturer to use internal beading in the 1990s. Processes like end grain sealing ensure that the timber is protected in the unlikely event the joint fails.
How environmentally friendly are modern coatings? There is no getting away from the fact that modern coatings contain plastic. However, this is what gives them longevity, meaning windows made to BWF standards like George Barnsdale’s will last 60+ years with minimal maintenance. By extending the life of a painted surface, less repainting is required, reducing the environmental footprint associated with manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of paint. In addition, there is the positive environmental (and financial) impact of not having to repaint every few years, hiring scaffolding, manpower, materials etc. Of course, extending the life of the painted surface also extends the life of the window or door which also saves valuable resources over time as they need replacing far less frequently. Architects and builders can help to increase the durability of timber windows by designing the building to reduce exposure to extreme weather. One of the ways of doing this is to follow the Victorians’ example and set windows in reveal. This doesn’t have to be old-fashioned. You can make a design feature of it, as the architect did with the Orseh Kaneh building in Tehran. Other ways to promote longevity of timber windows is to set them on stone, tile or aluminium and to avoid extended cills where possible.
Faith restored? Global warming is a huge concern, architects are well aware of the need to design environmentally friendly buildings. Timber is the most sustainable choice and the concerns around durability are addressed by specifying high-performance windows from companies like George Barnsdale. Hopefully, this article has helped restore faith in timber windows and doors. www.georgebarnsdale.co.uk
What’s the difference between paints and coatings? The terms “paints” and “coatings” are often used interchangeably. However, for the most part, paints are considered to be used primarily for aesthetics, while coatings are used principally to prevent substrate deterioration or for corrosion protection. Modern coatings are nothing like the paints and stains of old. Unlike the lead paints of the past, today’s coatings are non-toxic, water-based, microporous, and extremely durable. They must adhere to EN927 which considers durability, performance, and environmental impact. It also covers methods for measuring the thickness of coatings.

Can You Keep a Secret? Concealed Hinges Just Got Even Easier Installation Difference HES3D
HES1F
HES2S
Wall Frame Door
The HES1F is designed for slim frames. It seamlessly fits into frames of 8 mm.
Want to know what the secret to beautiful doors is? Ok, so the choice of materials and craft that goes into making the door are all important. But do you want to know what else? Concealed hinges. There, we said it. Why? Well, let’s turn that question around. If you have a beautiful, attractive, lovingly made door, why would you want to take anything away from it with visible hinges? We’re not just talking cabinet hinges here, either. 30 years ago, Sugatsune introduced a genuine game-changer in hinge technology. The HES3D was the first concealed hinge developed to be able to hold the weight of full-length interior doors. The most heavy-duty hinge in the range can handle doors up to 125kg in weight. To achieve that, we reimagined the concealed hinge concept altogether. The pivot-arm mechanisms that are standard issue on most concealed cabinet hinges don’t lend themselves well to high loads. So we went back to the drawing board completely, reengineering the classic butt hinge so the central barrel tucks away in recesses within the footprint of the hinge itself. This means the hinge mechanism is concealed completely between the stile and jamb when the door is closed. But the sturdy load-bearing capabilities of the classic barrel hinge are retained. Over time, we have extended the HES3D range to include options for everything from small cabinets to those heavy-duty interior doors we have already mentioned. That makes it the only end-to-end con-

The HES2S is a surface-mount model There is no need to mortise the frame.
frame - a quality which also explains its nomination for a Kids Design Award. With only the narrowest gap (less than 5mm) between stile and jamb on the hinge side, the risk of little fingers getting trapped is removed.
Introducing the HES1 and HES2.
Simple installation
Award-winning
The HES2, meanwhile, combines the advantages of a fully concealed hinge with the simplicity of surface mounting. With the HES3D, you have to mortise both the door and the frame to fit the hinge. When the door is closed, the hinge mechanism is hidden in the mortised space.
The HES1 is already an award winner. In Japan, it was named in the Good Design Award Best 100 2022. Out of more than 1,500 products that received awards overall, the top 100 are singled out on the basis of earning “a particularly high reputation as a design that suggests the future.” Similarly, the HES1 was also recognised with a Kids Design Award, a programme backed by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry that rewards products with “designs that contribute to the safety and security of children.” So what’s the story with this future-facing, kid-friendly hinge? The HES1 was developed for flush-to-wall doors and slim frames as little as 8mm wide. By providing flawless integration between door and wall, the HES1 is perfect for achieving slick minimalist designs for interior doors, builtin cupboards and wardrobes, partitions and more. Unlike the HES3D, the HES1 is not completely concealed when closed - but its profile is so small that it is all but invisible. And that is down to the ultra-snug fit the HES1 achieves between door and wall or
The HES2 works on the same principle, but you only have to mortise the door. The frame-side plate can simply be screwed on. This significantly reduces the time and effort it takes to hang a door. And it also means the HES2 can be installed on both slim-framed and frameless doors. Like the original HES3D, both the HES1 and HES2 can be split into two parts to be installed separately on the door and frame to make life easier. Once the door is hung, the hinges can be adjusted vertically, horizontally and by depth for a precise finish. And all hinges in the HES range are built to be supremely durable, having successfully passed 300,000-plus open/close cycles in testing. Easier to install in a broader range of locations and with enhanced safety - there’s just no concealing the benefits of the extended HES range. Now the secret is out, make sure you don’t miss out.

This eye for detail and strive for quality is of the utmost importance for Zoo Hardware and as such, the company is confident that it can provide the highest quality products at the most competitive prices. Through a determination to consistently innovate, develop and deliver state-of-the-art products, Zoo Hardware has designed Rosso Tecnica a new and exclusive collection of European inspired designer levers. Manufactured from Grade 304 stainless steel, which has been specifically selected for its high-corrosion resistance, durability and hardness properties, the Rosso Tecnica range has been purposely designed to provide an exceptional performance for use in both domestic and commercial applications. Always committed to staying ahead of the crowd, Zoo Hardware takes inspiration from contemporary trends with a focus towards minimalism and simplicity, this led to the company identifying a gap in the market. Zoo Hardware recognised the need for a new range of high-performance, design-led furniture, with hard-wearing decorative finishes; powder coated matt black, PVD satin brass and PVD satin bronze, to stand up to today’s requirements for hardware. With this in mind, the Rosso Tecnica range was created and delivers high-quality door furniture with a stunning aesthetic appeal to suit any modern interior. Offering a broad range of lever styles to suit even the most discerning tastes, from the industrially styled ‘Orta’ lever to the subtle curves of the ‘Como’, each design has been meticulously created to be both ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing, while meeting the technical requirements of the applicable BS EN standards. Rosso Tecnica has been designed and produced using a combination of both solid cast components and tubular components, where quality is the main consideration with an efficiency of material use to maintain cost
effectiveness. This gives the range affordability while maintaining an exceptional, quality look and feel, and if your specification requires consideration around The Equality Act, the Maggiore Lever is a 19mm diameter, return to door lever that meets the dimensional requirements of BS8300 and Approved Document M of the building regulations. The introduction of a newly engineered ‘Squircle’ rose, a rounded square known in mathematical terms as a ‘superellipse’, allows the complete customisation of both the levers and accessories to have a completely different look and feel from the standard round rose option. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, the Squircle rose has been designed for easy installation on the existing sub-rose, making it a simple and cost-effective solution for creating a modern and fashionable environment. The product is supplied with both wood screw and bolt through fixings, and a far more user friendly allen key for installation of the grub screws that are situated on the underside of the lever for improved aesthetics. All levers are supplied on a sprung rose configuration for improved operation and longevity. It’s not just about the levers either, Rosso Tecnica is a fully suited range, with complementary products including, hinges, door closers, flush bolts and more, being offered in each of the three hard-wearing finishes to create the perfect aesthetic for your project, whether it’s a residential dwelling or commercial office space. FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY
SAFE IN THE KNOWLEDGE Effective performance is everything when it comes to fire safety products. However, without knowing it, many of us could be making compromises when it comes to our choice of fire foams and fire rated sealants. As a company that manufactures sealants, adhesives and other building chemicals, you might expect us to advocate increased awareness when it comes to choosing fire foams. But self-gain never has, and never will, be Bond It’s main motivation for urging greater consideration when it comes to these products. Instead we believe the building industry in the UK is affected by a serious issue with equally serious, and potentially life-threatening, implications. With lives at stake, and against a backdrop where we are all increasingly accountable for our work and where they have been a number of high profile examples of poor building practices contributing to the spread of fire, we see it as our responsibility to share our knowledge. The problem stems from the existence of too many different but similar sounding classification systems. This has created a degree of confusion which has left many in the sector at risk of inadvertently using fire foams with levels of performance that fall woefully short of the mark.
NOT ALL FIRE FOAMS ARE CREATED EQUAL Years ago specifying a fire foam was a lot simpler and arguably safer than it is today. You had the choice of either a standard foam or a fire foam with both types available in either a gun or handheld form. To benefit from its classification, fire foam had to comply with BS476 part 20. This meant it would act as a barrier to fire for 4 hours giving a building’s occupants vital time to escape. Then, with an influx of European foams into the UK came a proliferation of different standards. The most widespread was a German standard based on a sliding scale. This ranged from A1 (100% non-combustible) through to A2, B1, B2 and B3 with the latter offering the worst levels of performance.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 58
If the introduction of a whole new standard system and a large number of differing classifications didn’t serve to create enough confusion, the way of assessing the UK and European standards was also totally different. The UK standard meant a fire foam had to act as a barrier to prevent fire transferring from one room to another for a period of four hours. The German standard meanwhile was based on someone trying to ignite the foam itself - not a very realistic scenario.
SAVINGS - BUT AT WHAT COST? One of the most widely seen classifications people now find on fire foams is B2 and it’s not hard to understand why. B2 strikes a fine balance between offering some fire resistance and at a cost that won’t hurt budgets – or margins. However, in our opinion, B2 ‘fire’ foam’s performance is totally inadequate and we don’t think it should be sold as fire foam at all. Yes, there are savings and profits to be made, but at the end of the day, what price do you put on property or even more poignantly, on someone’s life? As we near the 4th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, we are hoping lessons have been learnt. Like most of our competitors, we react to market demand and do supply a B2 PU foam as part of our range. However, we are strict about this not being referred to as a “fire” foam and it is not marketing under this guise at all. We clearly state what the products performance characteristics are and what it is tested to.
FIRE SAFETY & SECURITY
B2 strikes a fine balance between offering some fire resistance and at a cost that won’t hurt budgets – or margins. Sealants also play a big part in ensuring the integrity of fire resistant seals and joints. These are used in reestablishing the fire-rated integrity of a wall or floor assembly compromised by the inclusion or exclusion of a penetrant. Flames and smoke can spread through the smallest of gaps causing extreme damage to buildings and even human lives. Applying an intumescent sealant to linear joints, around pipes and between cables to close all the gaps and add fire resistance. An intumescent seal slows down the burning process and does not contribute to spread of flames. Therefore, it can minimize the damage by protecting structures, giving fire fighters more time to arrive and take the fire under control as well as fireproofing escape routes allowing for efficient evacuation.
HOW DOES INTUMESCENT SEALANT WORK? Intumescent seals are known as means of passive fire protection, but what is an intumescent sealant in practice? Also known as expansion sealant, intumescent sealant expands when it becomes exposed to extreme heat and can swell up to 40 times its original volume.
The sealant increases in volume but decreases in density forming a char layer. The expanded sealant does not actually catch fire, but the char burns eventually, still much more slowly than most building materials. Depending on the product formulation, application and backing material, an intumescent sealant can be resistant to fire for up to 4 hours. Buildings require different levels of fire resistance depending on their size and whether they have a residential purpose.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY Of course, it would be remiss of Bond It to highlight an issue as grave as current fire foam classification and misclassification without proposing a solution. Thankfully, there is one - and it’s also fairly easy to implement. In its simplest terms, our advice would in every circumstance if you need fire protection from your foams nothing less than B1 is really acceptable as a bare minimum standard and for sealants we would recommend a fire tested sealant. Look for the standards EN1366-4, EN1366-3, EN ISO 10140-2 and EN13501-2 on packs - which are proof that the foams and sealants will do their job and you can be safe in the knowledge that you’ve chosen a true fire foam or fire rated sealant that will leave people safe in their homes, offices and other buildings. BEFORDSHIRE INDUSTRIAL BUILDING FIRE-LINED WITH A1 MAGPLY BOARDS A family owned fishing and holiday business in the heart of the Bedfordshire countryside is currently seeing a variety of new leisure and commercial facilities being created, with high performance Magply boards from the range of IPP Ltd. having been chosen for lining a large new caravan maintenance workshop. Henlow Bridge Lakes near Henlow, was established on land surrounding a former mineral workings at the time of the Millennium by Dave Curson, who still runs the business with his two sons, Chris and Paul with Chris and Irene Rushton. The current work is creating space for more customers to stay, along with staff accommodation and other improvements. Dave Curson, whose drive and ideas have shaped Henlow Bridge Lakes, commented: “We originally purchased the 58 acres of land back in 1996 and set up the original campsite in 2001 and created the fishing lakes in 2003. Then more recently in 2020, we gained planning permission on the minerals site to create secure storage for 200 caravans, new holiday lodges and a staff accommodation unit, plus the workshop which will have space to work on four touring caravans. I did the original design on this 18 metre square building – based on the requirements of the tenant we’d identified - before bringing in Vega Construction as a

specialist in light gauge steel framing. We decided to utilise the 12mm Magply boards to line the structure on the recommendation of the main contractor, who has past experience of working with them where there is a fire protection requirement. All of the boards are being installed using self-tapping screws by just two men, working from a cherry picker and I think it is all going to look really quite good when it is finished.” All of the Magply boards are being supplied through the local branch of Jewson and offer a range of performance benefits relevant to the application. In fact Magply boards carry Euroclass A1 and other internationally recognised certifications, confirming their suitability as a fire mitigating sheathing for timber or steel frame systems, as well as in rainscreen cladding, SIPs and other modular/offsite constructions. The material also offers impact, racking and pull-out strength. In addition, Magply has recently been awarded a coveted BBA Certificate following stringent assessments, which included a six-month leaching test, producing a Zero score thanks to the production process which ensures stability and durability as a substrate in render backer and other applications. www.magply.co.uk

SEALING INTERFACES WITH ELONGATION AND FIRE SAFETY Façades play a critical role in the durability and sustainability of buildings, where the design of façades is a critical aspect of building performance, that requires careful consideration of many factors such as sealing interfaces, considering building movement and fire safety. Given the increasing prevalence of façade fires in the UK, façade fire safety has become critical and mandatory. The consequences of inadequate sealing interfaces can be dire, leading to water leaks, lack of airtightness, energy inefficiency, poor indoor air quality, and even mould growth.
Effisus ProFlex FR represents a groundbreaking solution to the challenges of façade sealing for movement and fire safety, with its exceptional mechanical and fire performance, as well as its ease of installation and customization, you’ll no longer have to compromise on safety or efficiency. At Effisus we strive to provide excellence in weatherproofing, where our solutions combine Efficiency and Sustainability, always promoting integrated systems with high added value and superior quality. At Effisus we are able to provide a fully fire rated façade envelope system. We can now protect all your façade elements against fire.

The future of façade design is exciting, and it’s up to us to shape it. The demand for new technologies that meet the demands of the 21st century is growing, and it’s time to move beyond traditional sealing solutions. We need groundbreaking alternatives that prioritize safety, sustainability, and efficiency. We must also consider the human impact of our buildings. The tragic episode of Grenfell tower and the recent story of Awaab’s Law serves as warning & reminder of the importance of designing buildings with the life, health and well-being of their occupants in mind. We must ask ourselves, what kind of world do we want to live now and in the future? One where people are forced to live in substandard housing conditions, or one where everyone has access to safe and healthy living spaces? Let us strive for buildings that prioritize health, safety and well-being of their occupants and perform well. After all, our buildings are not just structures; they are the places where we live, work, and play. www.effisus.com/en

THE LONDON HOUSE PROJECT WITH HAVWOODS CONTEMPORARY MEETS TRADITION A warm and welcoming home, this Victorian property located in South London underwent a major transformation. The client chose a combination of beautiful wood flooring designs from Havwoods throughout the property to achieve a sleek yet eye-catching aesthetic. From the new ground floor extension to the contemporary colour palette that runs throughout, the result is a bright and spacious home that is perfect for modern living.
The homeowners were keen to incorporate a Chevron design, one that was eye-catching but timeless.
Two different Havwoods products were chosen for this project, the Pallido Prime Chevron and Pallido Select boards. These surfaces were installed in the loft studio on the top floor of the property, including the bedroom and hallway. The natural light in the property beautifully accentuates the varied tones and textures found across Havwoods’ flooring, bringing the surface to life. In the living room, the homeowner continued the honey tones of the flooring with a bespoke herringbone design. This is further complemented with the bouclé cloud-like sofas and neutral toned accessories. The warmth of the wood perfectly enhances the monochrome colour palette and minimalist décor, working in harmony with the abundance of texture in the form of black panelled walls, bouclé headboard and tactile throws and pillows. The Chevron boards, light grey walls and black detailing carry through into the hallway and onto the staircase, creating a cohesive flow between the rooms. The homeowners were keen to incorporate a Chevron design, one that was eye-catching but timeless. They decided to use two different products to add further
interest to the look, which fortunately we were able to match in the same finish and appearance. The result was understated and timeless. With an array of flooring to perfectly complement any home, Havwoods’ varied collection combines the very best in style and functionality, offering both traditional and contemporary designs in a range of colours and patterns. The dedicated team works closely with every customer to ensure every detail of their project is met. www.havwoods.com/uk info@havwoods.com +44 (0)1524 737000

FIREPLACE ENERGY OPTIONS IN A COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS WHAT’S THE RIGHT CHOICE? An easily answered question - ‘’how long is a piece of string’’… Front and centre on everyone’s minds today, we are all faced with this question and all responsible for making this choice. However, the challenge remains in an online world, finding reliable, factual and unbiased information upon which this decision can be based. Its an all too often an occurrence, whereby a new client will walk into the showroom, confidently stating they are looking for ‘’X’’ fireplace for ‘’Y’’ reasons, appearing well informed, convicted in their choice and reluctant to engage when asked what’s motivating their defined criteria. Simply put, they have been empowered with mis-information and herein lies the truth.
ARCHETECH - PAGE 70
I truly do feel for the consumer in today’s technology driven world which allows information to be made available at the click of button. Sure, this information has mostly been based upon a degree of factual truth, however it’s the whole truth that empowers the individual to make the correct decision, not a degree thereof. If we dive into the specifics of energy selection, possibly one of the biggest topics on contemplation across a multitude of industries and sectors to a global scale, it’s all too apparent that information has been very cleverly constructed to present the trophy with the name engraved before the contest has taken place, or announcing the winner before the rules have been explained. Even in cross referencing sources in preparation of this article, the

all 4 of these energy formats, so I am going to convince you which is best, as the basis on that position, would be choosing a particular model, of my selection that best represents what I am trying convince you on, versus providing an option that best meets the overall criteria.
Electric multitude of information available leaves the wellinformed questioning what they thought they knew. Statistics, technical data and numbers can be quoted to make any option appear to be the best option, but the best option cannot be summed up in a one direction approach. It takes a clear understanding between customer and supplier to even attempt to reach this objective. So, whilst I would love to be able to simplify this topic of contention, the truth is, the age old saying of ‘’the devil is in the detail’’ couldn’t resonate more appropriately. For the purposes of establishing a baseline to begin from, all things being equal, lets tackle the question of relevance in terms of energy supply. Electric vs Gas, vs Bioethanol vs Wood…a minefield of options, and to this extent we should be celebrating the freedom of choice. There are indeed benefits and limitations with
Perhaps the fastest emerging market in the UK, and ticks all the boxes in terms of terms of not consuming a gas or solid fuel source. Thus, appearing to be the most environmentally friendly of the four options. Electric options have been challenged over the years due to the inferior flame quality, however modern advancements have now seen the introduction of holographic technology from leading brands Kalfire and Focus Creations, and these now levelled the playing field offering realistic flame patterns over the traditional rotary illuminated effect. The British Fire products appear to offer a great balance between quality and price point for traditional electric, however when viewed against the Holographic options, the differences are clear. This technology however comes at a price and therefore both technologies serve a place in the market pending budget and quality. As a heat source, electric element heaters on a large range of models offer the benefit
HEATING, VENTILATION & INSULATION of localised room heating, typically 1.5kW – 2.0kW and can prove effective in the right space, especially where flue systems are either costly or problematic. This becomes an ideal solution for apartments, nondetached homes and extensions. A further benefit for consideration is the safety aspect, especially that of public spaces. Thus hotels, restaurants, public and corporate spaces can create a warm ambience with peace of mind.
Bio-ethanol A great alternative to electric fire option whereby a natural flame pattern is desired together with a heat source without the need to have a flue system. Powerful units ranging from 4kW – 13kW provide ample heating for even large spaces. So perhaps a better alternative than electric if heating is the primary motivation for larger rooms and spaces, however the functionality of daily heating can prove troublesome and costly. Ranging from £1.30 to £2.60 per hour, this can quickly add up and one also has to consider the storage of a highly flammable fuel source and regular topping up of the units as well if used frequently. Much debate has yielded from claims of bio-ethanol fires being odourless when used, however in our experience even the best products in the market can’t avoid the inherent nature of emitting an odour. Perhaps fuels will evolve and perhaps there are manufacturers that found their eureka moment. Best advice would be to view in person and factor the rooms ventilation into account.
Gas Gas has become the rough kid in the neighbourhood over the past few years for various reasons. The historical inefficiency of open DFE (decorative fuel effect) fires has been left behind in an ever-evolving world with the introduction of glass front balanced flue fires. It’s therefore more appropriate to separate Gas into 2 classifications – Open DFE and Glass Fronted
ARCHETECH - PAGE 72
Open DFE – By nature of the words open, it’s not difficult to understand why these fires are now being eradicated from new build homes in the UK wherever possible. Open flue systems entail the largest percentage of the heat generated form the combustion process rises through convection up the chimney stack with a small percentage of the heat radiating into the room. Certain unsubstantiated online claims range from 15% to 50% in terms of efficiency, however regardless of where in the range the output lies, it’s the least efficient means of gas conversion to heat a room. Whether the fire is not used, whatever heat that is generated from heating sources within the property, the heat will be drawn up the flue system into the open air, thus deeming any form of heating in the property inefficient if an open flue system remains in the property. A unit output of around 6.9kW may only cost around £0.60 per hour to run, however it’s not what’s made available into the room that is really relevant here, it’s what’s up the flue that really matters, especially if wanting to adopt a responsible position when burning a fossil fuel. The challenge faced in the UK, especially within London, are the number of homes utilising open DFE fires, that would upgrade their fires to more efficient options at the drop of a hat, however are simply unable to afford to do so. They also can’t afford to use these fires as primary heating any longer due to costs, so sadly, much of this sector have their hands tied unwillingly. Glass Fronted – These units revolutionised the Gas sector, especially with the introduction of Balanced Flue systems. This allowed for highly efficient, high output units to be installed into existing properties, new builds or extensions with a great degree of flexibility with the flue routes. Flue systems are also considerably more cost effective than solid fuel twin wall systems and hence this became a near perfect solution for the Greater London residential sector. Outputs typically range from 5kW – 13kW with running costs being more cost effective than most people realise due to their approximate 80% efficiency. Hourly running costs range from £0.50 to
HEATING, VENTILATION & INSULATION
budget models and premium models is significant. Given the cost of a reputable kiln dried wood supply these days, whilst many may be drawn to the cheaper initial outlay of cost-effective models, a high-quality reputable model significantly more expensive in the initial purchase, can quickly earn its keep with wood consumption rates being up to a 3rd of budget models. If factoring that a good quality imported 6kW unit uses around 1.8kg/hr of wood, costing around £1.55 per hour, it’s not difficult to see costs soar when inefficient units can easily be using 3kg per hour plus. It remains the preferred choice by most outside of London, where wood supply is perhaps less of a premium and smokecontrolled zones are less stringent.
Conclusion £1.50 and thus offer a really good daily heating method for localised rooms, especially in the evenings after work where the time to light a solid fuel fire is just not worth the hassle. New technology has now also been introduced with variable valve systems, thus reducing the overall gas consumption without losing flame volume and effect. A prime example of this is the Kalfire Gi series, which is available with an output of between 1.9kW and 6.7kW and you can reduce the output as a percentage of maximum output at the touch of a button.
I believe the conclusion is simple, there is no perfect choice, but what there is, is the perfect choice for the individual. As much as cost is the driver of today, when factoring all the above into a decision, I do not believe running cost alone is the driving force. A fireplace is a significant investment into any home or space, and choosing the right option for the space is far more cost effective overall than the cheapest product. So, the responsibility remains on all of us, to ask the right questions and understand all the factors. All of a sudden, the right choice becomes the only choice.
Wood The home of fire and how it all started. Arguably still the most natural of all fuel sources and with the highest energy outputs ranging from 3kW to 16kW typically. Efficiencies have also received major technological advancements with air flow optimisation and the difference in consumption of wood between

SOUTH MORAVIAN INNOVATION CENTER (JIC) AN OPEN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM THAT SUPPORTS SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS IN THE REGION In a shared effort to reuse and provide content to existing city properties, Czech architecture studio KOGAA together with the South Moravian Innovation Center (JIC) have undertaken and completed their second retrofit project in Brno. The Institute provides spaces and support services to students, start-ups, scale-ups, and established firms with unique scalable products that can make a global impact on the market. From consultancy programs all the way to help out with financial reach, JIC has become a crucial open innovation ecosystem that supports successful entrepreneurs in the region. During and post-pandemic, as the company initiated an internal renewal process, its work model started to change and evolve to a more open and collaborative direction. Consequently, the original fixed structure layout of the research laboratory facility they are located in had become obsolete. As experts in

alternative retrofit workspaces, KOGAA was asked to come up with a new vision for an office that fosters collaborative encounters and provides a feeling of openness and creativity, as well as finding sustainable solutions for the new company structures. To achieve a profound change, fixed enclosing walls were replaced throughout the whole facility by transparent organic forms accommodating meeting rooms and semi-private workstations. Thanks to the flowing design, the original corridor-based layout disappeared, being replaced by organic in-between spaces that encourage relationships. Also, a boldcoloured zoning system informs areas for working and socializing, where a blue zone is for quiet and solo work, and red and orange spaces are dedicated to more interactive experiences.

Another big aim was to reduce the energy consumption of the building and reduce waste throughout the renovation process. The upper floor is now separated from the ground floor by a glazed partition to avoid unnecessary heat losses and most of the furniture has been repurposed from the previous offices together with the illumination and the main floor finishes.

RENOVATION OF VAINCRE LA MUCOVISCIDOSE ASSOCIATION OFFICES WGA + MÉTROTOPE + STUDIO TRAME The William Gonord Architecte Agency (WGA), Métrotope, and Studio Trame are proud to unveil the new offices of the Vaincre la Mucoviscidose association, located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Through its new associative and strategic ViVa 2026 project, “Vaincre la Mucoviscidose”, a French association fighting against cystic fibrosis, has set the goal of strengthening bonds to build a stronger community. This objective translates into a need to renovate outdated and unwelcoming premises. By improving the quality of its offices and creating new reception spaces, the association’s headquarters will be a true rallying point for its partners and members. A new image for the Association, and a showcase for its mission

Solid sections are treated with limestone cladding, showcasing the building’s heritage.
The association’s premises are located at 181 rue de Tolbiac in the basement levels of a 9-floor residential building dating back to the 1960s. Originally closed off with opaque sills and translucent windows, the facade has undergone a complete transformation. The facade renovation achieves two primary goals: engaging with the city by opening up to its immediate surroundings, and harmonizing with the existing limestone facade on the upper floors. The new reception areas feature extensive glass, contributing to the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and making the Association more visible. Solid sections are treated with limestone cladding, showcasing the building’s heritage. Fluted stones on the first floor throw the smooth surface of those on the ground floor into relief, playing with light and shadow.
Enhanced spatial and social relations The existing premises had three major flaws: offices without natural light, a lack of welcoming spaces, and a lack of connections between the floors. Removing floorspace around the existing staircases provides a breath of fresh air to the lobby, creating more visual connections between levels. This new interior layout infuses fluidity between reception spaces and work areas. Through the creation of shared offices, the functional reorganization has placed all offices with access to natural light with more workstations than before. In addition to traditional workspaces, a range of intermediate spaces (coworking areas, gathering
spaces, dining areas, etc.) have been designed to encourage greater interaction, strengthen the association’s bonds, and foster innovative ways of working.
Diverse spaces, from public to confidential The functional organization of the new headquarters is divided by floor: on the ground floor, there are public spaces (reception, meeting rooms, social areas, coworking spaces, and dining), while the first floor houses workspaces for the association’s staff (individual offices, shared offices, and open workspaces available to all). The offices have

extensive glass walls facing the central deck but, in order to maintain a high level of confidentiality, special attention has been paid to visual and acoustic insulation in certain areas. The double-skin glass partitions serve as both acoustic and visual filters, along with claustra, bookshelves, screen printing, curtains, and blinds.
Technical Specifications Official Project Name: Rehabilitation of Vaincre la Mucoviscidose’s Offices Location: 181 rue de Tolbiac, Paris 13th Arrondissement, France Floor Area: 1,144m² renovated / 617m² existing preserved Construction Period: July 2022 – June 2023
A furniture layout in harmony with the Association’s values As the physical heart of the association, Vaincre la Mucoviscidose’s premises embody what it means to its patients: a humble, warm, caring spirit, with a backdrop of active advocacy. The spaces are designed to make everyone feel at home, and free to share their struggles and concerns related to the disease. Entering these spaces should feel like taking a breath of hope and resilience. The colour scheme is reduced to two colours: Pantone’s Kombu Green, which is an intense, intimate, complemented by Farrow and Ball’s Dimity, a fresher, yet equally hospitable shade. Signage incorporates the association’s fresh and dynamic colours. Furniture shapes are flowing and curved, and the materials are unpretentious but warm, with a focus on solid oak for many pieces. Sheer curtains create a sense of lightness and breath, while creating a subtle play of transparency on the ground floor. On the first floor, the offices adopt the same warm and humble character as the ground floor, but with more of an official touch.

TOUGHENED LAMINATED – THE VERSATILE GLASS SUSAN SINDEN, MARKETING MANAGER FOR GLASS PROCESSOR ESG GROUP, LOOKS AT THE WAYS IN WHICH A RANGE OF CHALLENGES CAN BE ADDRESSED BY SPECIFYING TOUGHENED LAMINATED GLASS Toughened laminated glass is created by laminating sheets of toughened glass together with a PVB (PolyVinyl Butyrall) interlayer, making one of the construction industry’s most versatile materials. The added strength that the laminating process gives has allowed us to create taller, wider and lighter-weight glass panels, which can be used to realise even the most challenging of architectural concepts. In toughened laminated glass such as ESG Tufflam, using different types of interlayer, we can now also introduce a range of added benefits such as privacy, sound reduction, security, and even ballistic protection. LCD privacy glass, such as ESG Switchable glass, is rapidly gaining popularity in both domestic and commercial settings due to its ability to transform from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button. Using a specialised technical interlayer, a small electric current is run through the glass panel to make the panel optically clear, while switching off the current makes the panel opaque. This allows the end user to enjoy complete privacy without sacrificing natural light – an important consideration as energy costs rise. In open plan schemes, LCD privacy, or switchable, glass is often used to zone specific areas, such as boardrooms, bedrooms, ensuites, kitchens and even shower cubicles.

LCD privacy glass, such as ESG Switchable glass, is rapidly gaining popularity in both domestic and commercial settings.
A further type of interlayer can be used with thicker sheets of toughened glass to manufacture high security, ballistic, and even blast proof glass, helping to deter would-be criminals and terrorists.

We can also introduce sound attenuation properties using specialist interlayers. This is not just used in sound recording studios, where it provides the perfect solution, but also in offices and boardrooms, and increasingly in domestic dwellings, to combat urban noise pollution.
Using this advanced interlayer technology, we can now manufacture glass panes with almost any combination of properties, such as security, or sound attenuation, with privacy, to produce a multifunctional product, tailored to each specific project. This can help to control costs, by using one solution, rather than several.

TODD ARCHITECTS COMPLETES REDBRICK BUSINESS SCHOOL FOR QUEEN’S BELFAST UNIVERSITY The £17.5 million business school sits within its south Belfast campus, in front of the Grade II-listed Riddell Hall and enclosed by woodland The new building, built on a former car park, has teaching, and learning spaces for postgraduate students along with facilities for supporting the school’s executive education and leadership programmes, with informal study areas, academic offices, and shared spaces. Inside the circulation spaces, exposed concrete soffits with floating acoustic ceilings, board-marked concrete walls, timber wall sheeting and terrazzo flooring, create a robust aesthetic. One of the key spaces is a top-lit, triple-height atrium with a feature stair providing access from the ground floor reception to the upper ground level, where informal study booths overlook a landscaped courtyard. A low-energy, ecologically sensitive design approach was adopted from the outset. One measure taken was a major geothermal heat system. Piles were driven to a depth of 125m in an adjoining field to extract heat from the sandstone substrate and provide low-level constant heat via underfloor heating, resulting in a 60 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.
ARCHITECT’S VIEW “We presented a plan diagram based on how we envisaged people might move through the building and a conceptual architectural approach that proposed carefully knitting the built form into its landscaped setting. Externally in respect of materiality, the building echoes the neighbouring, listed Riddell Hall, whilst internally we have sought to ensure a connectivity for users with surrounding mature woodland and other natural finishes.
CLIENTS’ VIEWS Queen’s University Belfast is moving towards net zero, and this building – which uses sustainable ground source heating – is an important part of the journey. The design of the building, which is sleek, contemporary, and future-focused, boasts the scenic quality of being nestled in the trees of the Stranmillis Conservation Area. The building is helping us a) grow our international stature and esteem by hosting highprofile events; b) expanding our research-led dialogue with the business community by providing space for collaboration and dissemination activities; and c) offers a fantastic student experience via tailor-made areas for learning and study.
Professor MN Ravishankar, dean and head, Queen’s Business School The new Queen’s Business School is the latest building in Queen’s University’s capital investment programme to support world-class education and research and provide an exceptional learning environment and experience for its students with this truly iconic building. Through collaboration and a commitment to excellence, TODD Architects has ensured that this facility will enable the Business School to continue its growth, by attracting the best staff and students from Northern Ireland and around the world, and to produce graduates who will make a positive impact on society.
We promoted a low-energy, ecologically sensitive design approach from the outset, securing a BREEAM Excellent rating, with the building’s renewable energy sources including a major geothermal heat system beneath an adjoining lawn and roof mounted arrays of solar/photovoltaic panels”.
We are delighted with our new landmark building that will take Queen’s Business School into the next phase of its development and serving future generations to come.

FROM CONCEPT TO COMPLETED PROJECT WITH FORDINGBRIDGE FORDINGBRIDGE ARE RENOWNED FOR THEIR DESIGN AND BUILD OF CANOPIES, WALKWAYS, AND SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS NATIONWIDE Whether starting from scratch, or inclusive of an existing site project, Fordingbridge’s flexible approach to structural development allows for increased enhancements as part of site rejuvenation schemes and overhaul projects. The company’s four stage process provides a seamless approach from inception to installation, aligning with RIBA’s official construction stages zero to seven.
Enquire, Visit, and Meet In preparation for every project, Fordingbridge offers complimentary site visits inclusive within the first stage of enquiry. This grants the opportunity for clients and contractors alike to highlight ideas and share their specifications with the technical team, including identifying the space that requires cover, to formulate a detailed brief. At this time, conceptual discussions highlight key factors for consideration and outline pertinent specifications.
Survey, Proposal, and your Decision Following on from the initial contact and enquiry stage, the team at Fordingbridge would then draft a proposal for review; detailing site and structural considerations and discoveries made within a technical site survey undertaken. This is the time that the customer can decide whether to proceed to the next stage with the bespoke design. It is pertinent to remain completely transparent with the Sales Manager, as at this point refinement and amendments can be made in accordance with the specification.
Technical Design and Review Once the green light has been given, the manufacture team will fabricate the components required to build the structure, custom-designed from Fordingbridge’s catalogue of components. The Fordingbridge drawing team at this time will take all of this into consideration and develop all required drawings and ground plans for the site team.
Delivery and Installation At this stage of the process, Fordingbridge will liaise with the client once more to ensure the site is ready for the scheduled deliveries, undertaken by Fordingbridge’s own fleet of transport. The first of deliveries will happen as close to the start date of installation, ensuring that Fordingbridge’s construction teams are in position to start the build of

JOSEPH ASH GALVANIZING: DUPLEX COATINGS EXPERTS Joseph Ash Galvanizing is a UK leader in steel finishing services, including galvanizing, spin galvanizing, shot blasting, powder coating and duplex coatings. When it comes to safeguarding steel against corrosion, Joseph Ash Galvanizing upholds the highest standards of quality. The company caters to a diverse clientele, ranging from large construction firms and fabricators to local authorities and architects. One of the most effective ways to protect steel and enhance its aesthetic appeal is by treating it with a duplex coating: a synergy of hot dip galvanizing and powder coating suitable for all steel architectural projects. Used independently, a galvanized coating and a powder coat provide a good level of protection for steel. However, as steel ages, the galvanized zinc coating erodes, making the steel more susceptible to weather damage. If, however, the steel has also been painted or powder coated, the synergistic effect acts as an extra barrier, which slows down the zinc erosion rate and provides a far superior level of protection to extend the life of steel. The additional benefits of a duplex coating are durability, ease of

repainting, economical, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and guaranteed for up to 40 years (dependent on the type of powder used). Joseph Ash Galvanizing’s Medway plant specialises in duplex coating services, offering an extensive range of durable finishes. These finishes encompass metallic and textured options, available in a broad spectrum of vivid colours with varying matte, satin, and gloss levels. ADVANCED FIRE PROTECTION FLIPS THE SCRIPT FOR ICONIC FORMER FILM STUDIO A SHARED USE OFFICE AND RETAIL SPACE AT THE LANDMARK FORMER HOME OF BRITISH PATHÉ IS NOW BEING PROTECTED BY ADVANCED 360Fire designed and commissioned a new Advanced fire alarm system with phased evacuation as part of a wider restoration and refurbishment project which will see the creation of several workspaces, including private offices, office suites and full floors, alongside social areas and retail units. Located at 142 Wardour Street, Soho, Film House was once at the heart of London’s ‘film row’. By the late 1940s it’s estimated that up to 100 film companies occupied the street, including Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox. Originally the site of Faraday Electrical Works, the office building was re-built in 1929 in the Art Deco style. Over its long history it has acted as the headquarters for several iconic British businesses, including the Associated-British Pathé film company and later HMV. Taking design responsibility for the project, 360Fire worked with Mechanical Services Ltd (MSL) who installed four, four-loop Advanced MxPro 5 panels and one repeater panel alongside Hochiki detectors, covering all six tenanted floors of the building.
Available as standard on MxPro 5 panels, AlarmCalm delivers unprecedented control of verification and investigation delays.
The panels are integrated with a voice alarm system allowing for phased evacuation, with lifts operating on a dual signal to the ground or alternative floor, depending on fire location. An out of hours override activated via the panel’s function button cancels the phased evacuation and enables the system to revert to a ‘one out all out’ system with no delays. Further integration with the building’s BMS enables control over sprinklers, door access, lifts, and smoke vents.
Chris Peart, Service & Commissioning Manager at 360Fire, said: “This was a complex project and MxPro 5 panels were specifically chosen due to their open protocol nature, flexibility and ease of cause-andeffect programming. Advanced is the market leader and without fail represents the best solution for both the installer and the end user.”
The system also makes use of MxPro 5’s stand-out false alarm management capabilities. Available as standard on MxPro 5 panels, AlarmCalm delivers unprecedented control of verification and investigation delays. By dividing sites up into virtual false alarm ‘building areas’ independent of fire zones, much more precise control of false alarm management and reduction strategies can be achieved, that exactly fit the needs of each part of a building. An optional AlarmCalm button allows trained occupants to verify if they believe a local fire signal is a false alarm too – a highly effective way of eliminating unwanted alarms.
As a global leader in the development and manufacture of intelligent fire systems, Advanced products are specified in locations around the world, from single-panel installations to large, multi-site networks. The Advanced portfolio includes complete fire detection systems, multiprotocol fire panels, extinguishing control, false alarm management and reduction systems as well as emergency lighting. Visit Advanced on stand E54 at London Build, 15th16th November, to find out more about its versatile range of fire protection solutions. www.advancedco.com

SCION INNOVATION HUB THE DESIGN THINKING BEHIND THE WORLD’S BEST TIMBER BUILDING A balance of creativity with pragmatism, sustainability with social responsibility, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with wood — here’s what went into creating the world-renowned Scion Innovation Hub. To create a prototype of the future building, you’ll need a perfect confluuence of factors — a creative design team, innovative technology, a willing client, and the right cultural and environmental context. The Scion Innovation Hub has an abundance of all these magical elements. The forestry research institute’s one-of-a-kind design leads the way as the first sizable steel-less timber building in New Zealand. Both the wood structure and sustainable strategies deployed by the designers of this award-winning building embody a creative yet pragmatic solution to the question, “How can we combat the world’s looming climate crisis through innovative building design?”
Designing with transparency in mind RTA Studio, an architecture firm based in Auckland, New Zealand, partnered with Irving Smith Architects to design the Rotorua headquarters of Scion, a Crown research institute that specializes in research, science, and technology development for the forestry, wood product, wood-derived materials, and other biomaterial sectors. RTA Studio has a strong interest in mass timber architecture, which has moved to the forefront of
ARCHETECH - PAGE 106
people’s minds as a green material — particularly as warnings about the climate crisis continue. Rich Naish, RTA Studio’s design director and the Scion building’s lead designer, tells us how he reimagined the outdated Scion campus and moved it into the 21st century. The original research campus gave o. serious 1960s vibes. It was a maze; prolonged intercourses of laboratories stretched out all over the site, creating physical chasms that stymy research collaboration and department connection. Scion wanted a new, modern workspace to promote research, encourage interconnection, and educate the public about their work, ushering in a new era of transparency for an institution that works on New Zealand’s behalf. To encourage public awareness of Scion’s work, Rich and his architectural team developed a master plan that relocated the main entrance to the opposite end of the site, adjacent to the Whakarewarewa Forest Park entrance. When visitors stop at a cafe or other amenities at the popular hiking destination, the Scion building is directly in their purview. The client’s goal to increase transparency for the public was a significant driver not only in the building’s orientation but also in its layout. The designers created a beautiful, centralized atrium to welcome people into the public space on the ground floor of the building. A kaleidoscope of colors and repeating timber beams
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS An elegant design cuts costly complexity

The layout also invites the public to look into the scientists’ workspaces. It’s common to see workers showcased in cheese factories and breweries but rare in forestry research labs. An open layout also encourages chance and planned interactions between the scientists. The building fosters collaboration and public exchange, a perfect example of how purposeful design can positively influence people’s behavior.
The wood structure’s lightweight footprint and repetitive design elements cut design time and construction costs. There are only six di.erent components for much of the wood structure. The shapes consisted of a diamond cut vertically, then in half, a diamond cut horizontally, and corner pieces. Each additional component can increase the cost of a building; having only six is a novel concept for most designers. The jigsaw design reduces manufacturing and construction waste because predictable shapes reduce leftover timber cuttings. With such simple building blocks, the team could purposefully specify all of the components beforehand. It also allowed for more accurate cost estimating as there was no need to factor in modifications or additional expenses.
Contextual design Scion and the design team collaborated with the local Maori tribe to integrate their cultural values into the building’s design. The Maori view the forest as a sacred space that provides protection. Following the tribe’s input, shades of green reminiscent of the diverse hues found in leaves on a tree adorn the building’s glass envelope. Not only is the Scion building combating climate change globally but it is also designed to minimize the impact on its local surroundings, helping protect and champion the spaces sacred to the Maori. Such contextual design harmoniously blends the building with its forested surroundings.
Made entirely of wood — impossible? An entirely wood building at this scale had never been built in New Zealand. The first time the design team proposed the idea to their engineer, Alistair Cattanach, he said it was impossible. However, the idea lingered in his mind, and he presented a solution a week later. Alistair’s proposal mimics how you would finger joint timber for furniture — only at a much larger scale. Two pieces of wood join together with six to eight 100mm fingers, and these interlocking elements are glued together. The bond is so strong that it basically creates one structural element out of two pieces of timber. Understanding how to engineer the joinery was the “eureka!” moment that spurred the revolutionary construction technique applied throughout the timber structure. The team thought they might get pushback from stakeholders wondering how wood could be a structurally sound material for a building of that scale. The only entirely wood buildings the team could point to as examples were tiny, single-family homes. Fortunately, Scion stakeholders are timber enthusiasts and scientists who understand the unique properties of wood. They knew that an innovative solution highlighting all-wood structures as the way of the future was necessary — and, more importantly, possible.
Pliable modeling workflows The team used SketchUp from the initial concept design through the preliminary design phase. The geometric modeling capabilities of the 3D software perfectly aligned with the repetitive timber components, facilitating rapid design iterations. “We use SketchUp because it’s quick and easy. We created groups and components, so changing one component could be easily reelected across the entire design.“ - Rich Naish, Design Director, RTA Studio The architectural designers shared the model with the client and other consultants, like the engineering team. As the project advanced, Rich and the team used Revit in their workflow alongside SketchUp, building two parallel models. Keeping the SketchUp model up to date was essential for project milestones that required presenting an easyto-understand model to stakeholders. While Revit models contain intricate details, SketchUp simplifies iterative design improvements and preparing compelling presentations. The team loved using SketchUp models to show the building’s scale and appearance without having to model as many details as you would with other software programs. This simplicity allowed them to save time and not promise color schemes or other specifics they may need to change later. When the team wanted to show more realistic details like material and shadow for project milestones, they used Enscape. In the past, RTA Studio would contract their renderings to a third-party consultant — an expensive and time-consuming process. RTA Studio now handles all graphics in-house thanks to interoperability between SketchUp and Enscape.
PAGE 107 - ARCHETECH
ARCHITECTURAL FOCUS Streamlined construction Once the design was modeled in 3D, the timber manufacturers imported the files into software that their CNC machines could read. The manufacturers made a virtual model of everything they would manufacture and ran it through digital processing before cutting any timber. This planning process reduced rework and material waste. Components were cut at the timber factory and shipped to the site in batches for specific building sections, further simplifying assembly on site. The building parameters went up within two days, the floors were installed in a week, and the second-story framing took another couple of days. Using timber and the new joinery system saved time during the build and won the team many accolades down the road.
Certified sustainability An independent company evaluated the Scion building and confirmed it is carbon neutral. Achieving this benchmark is primarily due to the significant amount of timber, a carbon-negative material. Using large amounts of wood o.set the small proportion of other materials needed. In terms of energy e.ciency, the building’s operating costs are approximately half those typically seen in a civic or commercial building.
Praise pours in The design team has had many conversations about the building with the forestry research sta. who moved in. Everyone praises the aesthetic design and performance. The interior is maintained at a comfortable temperature with a mixed-mode climate control system that saves energy. The daylighting strategy engineered by the design team allows light to enter o.ces without causing glare on computer screens. The most common feedback Rich
hears is that people simply adore living with wood. Because of the building’s popularity, Scion hired a tour guide who shows visitors the eye-catching facility all day long. On an international scale, this building has received no end of accolades. The World
Insights for the future To make a magical building, you need a design team committed to environmental, cultural and social responsibility — and a client who believes in the importance of those considerations. Rich cautions us that it’s not just about striving for every potential green cost-saving measure. The client needs to share a commitment to building sustainability for the good of the planet. There are numerous ways to be a responsible environmental steward: minimize excavation, reduce waste, and enhance a building’s resilience. Designers and architects need to find the optimal solutions for their specific circumstances. RTA Studio’s philosophy is to design contextually, whether in an urban center or a coastal town. Rich says responsive designs often result in unique and diverse buildings. The Scion building pays homage to the forest with a symbolic design that honors the local people and aligns with the forestry research facility’s mission. The cascading benefits of their design process include cutting-edge timber technology, carbon-neutral design and stunning aesthetics. Ready to help solve the climate crisis? BREAKING NEW GROUND NEW HERITAGE VALLEY IS A ‘GAME CHANGER’ FOR PLAIN TILE & SLATE ROOFS ‘Innovation’ is a word that tends to be over-used these days. However, GRP roofing products specialist Filon Products is receiving widespread accolades for its new Heritage Valley design, which breaks important new ground in the pitched roofing sector. Designed for use with plain tile and slate roofs, the Heritage Valley combines the proven benefits of GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) construction, with the classic, heritage aesthetic of a close mitred valley – previously only attainable with lead soakers. HERITAGE AESTHETICS, WITH LOWER COSTS AND PRACTICAL ADVANTAGES GRP is much lighter than lead, completely non-toxic and because it has no scrap value, it’s not subject to any risk of theft. In addition to these advantages, the Heritage Valley also brings significant cost savings when compared to lead. Firstly, the material cost of GRP is lower, resulting in a reduced initial outlay – and with no specialist lead working skills required, labour costs are reduced too. Further savings are delivered by the innovative design of the product itself. Steve Makin, one of the design team behind the Heritage Valley, explains: “The unique, dry-fix ’S’ design of the Heritage Valley maintains a wide drainage channel but has a much narrower span between the tile support ledges. This design eliminates the need for costly valley roof tiles on plain tile roofs. With the short span between support ledges, there are no unsupported small cut tiles or slates, so no additional tile support pieces are required and the quantity of slate / tile and a half going into the valley is significantly reduced: another huge cost saving.” He continued: “Also, no special eaves closures are needed. With no gaps at the foot of the valley to fill, the fascia board is simply square cut to fit the valley trough profile.” GRP DESIGN AND PRODUCTION TEAMWORK AT ITS BEST GRP is an outstanding construction material, but presents challenges in product design and production, which have until now, limited the extent to which various product features could be employed. Filon’s Technical Consultant, Steve Vickers, has been closely involved with the project since its inception. He said: “Bringing the Heritage Valley to market has involved intensive teamwork, as it’s the most complex profile we’ve ever produced. We’ve always encouraged a culture of continuous improvement and openness to
ARCHETECH - PAGE 114
new ideas at Filon and this latest achievement is down to the hard work and collaborative efforts of many people.” Designing tooling to create the unique ’S’ profile of the product, was just one of the challenges faced. Technical Supervisor Matt Camp put the design into CAD format and designed the many different sets of tooling that were necessary to achieve the exact profile required. He commented: “In the early stages, the material simply didn’t behave as we expected it to. Tooling for GRP production always requires refinement and adjustment and this was a particularly demanding product to get right.” Production Manager John Charles was tasked with overseeing production trials and keeping the team motivated throughout a long period of trial and error which eventually led to the solution. He added: “There’s often no shortcut with GRP. One of the biggest challenges we faced was the very small time window required to get the material to working temperature. We’ve now firmly established all the production parameters, which means we’re able to manufacture in quantity to our regular lead times.” FILON: A LONG TRADITION OF INNOVATION Filon has been a leader in GRP construction products for over sixty-five years, having pioneered the original GRP profiled sheets manufactured by continuous pultrusion process in the 1950s. Filon also manufactured the first continuously produced GRP valley troughs as an alternative to costly lead products in the 1980s. Managing Director Mark Wilcox concluded: “The Heritage Valley complements our existing valley trough range and meets a specific need in the roofing sector. It further supports our claim to be ‘The innovator in GRP construction products’. I offer huge thanks to the brilliant team that have turned this outstanding idea into a practical reality with a realistic price point”. For further information, visit: www.filon.co.uk
