،‫يس ّلط هذا المعرض الضوء على النتائج الرئيسية لمشروع العمارة الخليجية‬ ‫وذلك باالعتماد على الوثائق واألبحاث األكاديمية والتي أجراها فري�ق عمل‬ ‫(مشروع العمارة الخليحية) في جامعة ليفربول حول العمارة والعمران التقليدي‬ ‫وعمان واإلمارات العرب�ية المتحدة وشرق المملكة العرب�ية السعوديةـ‬ ُ ‫في قطر‬

،‫والهدف من ذلك هو دراسة كيفية انتقال المجتمعات الخليجية األصلية‬ ‫والت�أثري المتبادل بني هذه المجتمعات من خالل التجارة والهجرة بني‬ ‫ وكيفية تفاعلها وتشكيل الحضارة العرب�ية‬،‫قطر والجزي�رة والعالم بأسره‬ ‫الخليجية والعمارة والثقافة المادية قبل اكتشاف النفط وبعد ذلك مباشرةـ‬ ‫ المناظر الطبيعية والبنية‬- ‫يتم تقسيم المعرض إلى أربعة أقسام‬ ‫ والتي تدرس وتجمع‬- ‫التحتية والحضارة العمرانية والهندسة المعمارية‬ ،‫السمات المشرتكة بني جميع المناطق في الخليج من مختلف المناظري‬ ،‫تحدد األقسام الفرعية البنيات المحيطة الطبيعية ومن صنع اإلنسان‬ ‫حيث‬ ّ ‫وأنماط االستيطان والمسكن وأنواع المباني وأنظمة البنية التحتيةـ‬ Building on documentation and research undertaken by the GAP Team at the University of Liverpool on traditional urbanism and architecture in Qatar, Oman, UAE and Eastern Saudi Arabia, this exhibition highlights key findings from the Gulf Architecture Project.

The aim is to examine how Gulf indigenous societies, trade and migration flows between Qatar, Arabia and the wider world, interacted and shaped Gulf Arab urbanism, architecture and material culture before the time of oil and immediately afterwards.

The exhibition is organised into four sections – landscape, infrastructure, urbanism, architecture – which analyse common traits across the Gulf from a multi-scale perspective. Sub-sections identify country-specific natural and man-made settings, settlement and dwelling patterns, building types and infrastructure systems.

This concise exhibition has brought together the initial findings from the digital archiving initiative of the Gulf Architecture Project (GAP) to throw light on a comparative study of urbanism and architecture across Qatar and the Gulf region.

The flatness of the coastal land is often contrasted by the desert or a mountainous hinterland, the latter shaped by an expansive network of water drainage systems (wadi). Oasis settlements developed since time immemorial taking advantage of these conditions, initially identifying locations where water was naturally available, later complemented by wells (tawi), springs (‘ayn) and irrigation systems (aflaj).

Settlements evolved, shaped by the topography but also the ethnic and tribal diversity introduced through millennia of migration, trade and exchange. Major urban centres took advantage of the trading conditions emerging as a result of mainly maritime opportunities, augmented by produce from inland oases.

The urban character and the architecture – civic, defensive and religious – varied widely, and building types showed influence from across the region as well as those resulting from external influences introduced by Arab merchants.

Wadis are flat or gently sloping valleys in desert environments, characterised by streams that are generally dry except during the rainy season. In times of rain, the lower levels of the river bed, made of densely packed sand and gravel, impede water drainage, and thus flash flooding the surrounding low-lying areas.

As a freshwater ecosystem, wadis have historically made possible for communities to settle and establish a thriving permanent habitat based on agriculture and animal husbandry.

Wadi Halfayn is one of the largest wadis in Oman. It rises out of the multitude of seasonal tributaries from the Jabal al Akhdar, and runs south into the Rub al Khali desert. The flat terrain created by the flooding of the wadi has traditionally formed a point of transit, while the water-bearing subsoil has been tapped to establish important oases along its flanks, such as Tanuf, Nizwa, Birkat al Mawz, Izki and Manah.

Moisture concentrated in the subsoil was traditionally tapped by wells and channels with the purpose of sustaining life in the oasis settlements.

Omani irrigation channels, known as aflaj (singular falaj), originated in the 6th century CE, but most of them were built in the 17th century during the Ya’ariba period. Depending on the topography and availability of surface, underground or spring water, different catchment techniques were developed.

The ayni falaj consists of a channel that collects the water from natural springs. The ghaily falaj uses surface water flowing in the wadis, which is re-directed through splitter channels towards the settlements and the agricultural fields. The daudi falaj consists in long horizontal galleries dug into the ground, which collect moisture and transform it into water.

Wells (tawi) for domestic purposes could be public or private. In Oman, communal wells were located in the vicinity of defensive structures, within a courtyard with wider communal access, so that the water source could be easily protected from unauthorised use, or along public routes. Private wells were typically found within houses of higher socio-economic status.

Traditional agricultural wells (zajara), employed domesticated animals, such as cows and donkeys, which drew the water inside leather bags and emptied it into a basin, from which it was directed towards the plots to be irrigated.

A third type of well is associated with the Islamic precept of ritual washing before prayer, which resulted in the creation of ablution cubicles (wudu) generally located next to mosques. A number of factors - geomorphology, climate, water availability, relationship between arable and non-arable land, livelihoods and social structures - determined the form of traditional settlements.

Coastal settlements were shaped by their connection with the world through seafaring and trade. Inland settlements were shaped by their social and land-bound connection with the rest of the Arabian Peninsula.

The inland settlements of Oman had dense, close-knit fabrics and mazy street patterns to protect them from the sun, while perimeter walls, gates and towers defended them from external attacks. Built along falaj channels and mainly living on agriculture and animal farming, these settlements were organised in clusters of dwellings lived-in by groups with tribal or family ties.

The spatial organization of residential buildings in Oman, their architectural, decoration and construction characteristics varied depending on location, materials availability and socio-economic status of the owners. Dwellings were compact structures up to three floors, built out of mud bricks or stone blocks.

In Central Oman the ground floor was used to keep livestock and store food, whereas on the upper floors were multipurpose rooms for the household. The houses of Al Mudayrib, in the Ash Sharqiyah region, were organised around an internal courtyard. Upstairs, rooms were accessed via an arched gallery (dihriz). Rooftops were fortified by towers and parapet walls with loopholes.

Coastal houses had a more outward-looking appearance, which manifests the cosmopolitan identity of their residents, engaged in seafaring and sea trade. ‫لقد أثر المناخ شديد التنوع في المملكة العرب�ية السعودية على تطور أنواع‬ ‫ا‬.‫المساكن التقليدية المالئمة لمحدداتها اإلقليمية‬ ‫ وفرت المباني المبنية من اآلجر والطوب واللنب‬،‫ففي منطقة نجد الحارة والجافة‬ ‫ أما في منطقة الحجاز الغرب�ية‬.‫مالذ ًا من الحر وخصوص ًا وجود الفناء الداخلي‬ ،‫الرطبة والحارة والتي ت�تميز بالمناخ الصحراوي الداخلي لساحل الخليج العربي‬ ‫فقد تمت حماية خصوصية السكان باإلضافة إلى ت�أمني تهوية المساكن بواسطة‬ )‫ روشان‬، ‫وجود النوافذ ذات الجدران الخشبية المنحوتة بشكل جميل (المشرب�ية‬ .)‫وأبراج الرياح (بادكري) وألواح الجبس المثقبة ذات الزخارف الهندسية (النقوش‬ ‫ فقد تم بناء المنازل الشبيهة‬،‫وفي المناخ ذو األرض المرتفعة لمنطقة عسري‬ ‫ا‬.‫باألبراج بواسطة الحجر والطني المصبوب وتم إنشاء العوارض على الواجهات‬ ‫ت�أسس قصر سعد بن سعود في القرن الخامس عشر كأول مقعد لألسرة السعودية‬ ‫ وتظهر المفردات المعمارية ألسلوب البناء‬،‫في منطقة الطريف في الدرعية‬ ‫ بناء كثيف مرتاص من‬:‫ والتي تميز وسط شبه الجزي�رة العرب�ية‬،‫النجدي بوضوح‬ ‫الطني ويتميز بت�كوينات ثالثية ومستطيلة ونتؤات في مستوى السطح يدوية‬ ‫ا‬.‫الصنع ومطلية باللون األبيض‬

The extremely diverse climate of Saudi Arabia has influenced the development of regionally specific traditional dwelling types.

In the hot-dry Najd region, mud brick and rammed earth courtyard houses provided shelter. In the hot-humid western Hejaz region and in the maritime inland desert climate of the Arabian Gulf coast, exquisitely carved wood-screened windows (mashrabiya, rowshan), wind towers (badgir) and perforated gypsum panels with geometric motifs (naqsh) ensured ventilation while protecting the privacy of the dwellers. In the upland climate of the Asir region, tower-like houses were built with stone, cast mud and slates projecting out of the facades.

Large dwellings of the Gulf littoral were usually owned by sheikhly or merchant families and were built using a combination of coral or natural stone and mudbrick set in clay mortar. The fortunes of Jazirat al Hamra near Ra’s al Khaymah, once an important pearling port, rose and fell with the pearl trade. However, aside from trade and exchange, the site also exemplifies another important factor in pre-oil settlement processes: tribal conflict.

The merchant house is set within a large area – its ground floor used as a secure storage with few windows. To maximise ventilation into the living quarters, the upper floor, however, had tall often arched openings inset with two-tiered windows, topped by decorated circular ventilation grills in cast gypsum. This building tradition is followed into the other Gulf principalities, such as in Sharjah and Dubai. The example from Sharjah shows the remains of a windtower, aimed at getting the cooler air into the living spaces below. Omani Ibadi mosques differ typologically between interior and coastal regions.

In Central Oman, traditional mosques used for the daily prayers (masjids) consist of a cuboid prayer hall accessed from an elevated platform (sahn) and topped by a small domical rooftop construction (bumah). A distinctive feature is the decorated mihrab, centrally positioned in the wall opposite the main entrance.

Along the coast, mosques are similar to the rest of the Islamic world in that they feature a minaret and pulpit (minbar).

Masjid al-Jami, in Harat Al Yaman, Izki, exemplifies the traditional Friday mosque of the Interior. Unusually included within the settlement’s walls, it is accessed from a slightly raised terrace and internally divided into three longitudinal bays by two rows of mudbrick columns. The Sunni mosque from Jazirat al Hamra is of the coastal mosque type, where a prayer hall of almost domestic proportions and accessed through doorways is fronted by a flat-lintelled colonnade.

A large minaret of squat proportions set at one corner of the raised ground completes this distinctive coastal mosque type, which could be found along the entire Arabian/ Persian Gulf littoral, as well as along parts of the Omani coast and into East Africa (for example, in Mombasa).

Mosques along the coast also display prominently projected prayer niches (mihrab) indicating the direction of prayer (qiblah), as we find in the restored mosque from Jazirat al Hamra. However, domes are rare in the mosque architecture of the Gulf region, of which the Al Quba Mosque from Al Hufuf is an excellent example, influenced in this case by Ottoman architectural precedents.

Traditional societies in Arabia were confronted with the need to defend themselves and their lands from rival tribal attacks.

They, therefore, developed ingenious defensive systems which comprised: watchtowers (burj), to ensure landscape-wide territorial surveillance, forts (qalat) to guard the oases, and walls (sur), provided with towers, gates and sentry walks, to protect the settlements.

Built around the 13th-14th century CE by the Banu Nebhan tribe on a high rocky outcrop at the centre of the Bahla Oasis to protect it from attacks by the Umayri malik of Sumayil and his Bani Hina allies, the Bahla Fort is a remarkable example of this type of defensive building. It has rounded towers and castellated parapets, and a continuous perimeter wall of stone and mud bricks on stone foundations.

Fortifications and defensive structures were an integral part of the vernacular settlements of the Gulf region and its architecture.

A typical fort of the Gulf littoral – even dating back to the preIslamic period – would have been a simple fortified enclosure and small, largely single-storied structures abutting against the highwall to provide accommodation for the guards.

Large enclosures will have had two towers – often round but also square in plan – at diagonal corners aid surveillance, and in some all corners will have had towers.

The example from Bur Dubai shows a corner tower with a wide base, common to the coastal Gulf architecture, while the one from Jazirat al Hamra is a square-plan tower, possibly built in isolation as an observation post. The latter contains distinctive defensive features for pouring liquid deterrents on potential attackers, as well as loopholes for the use of small firearms.

A common civic building type across the Arabian Peninsula is the male meeting halls (majlis, plural majalis).

In Oman these halls are commonly called sbal (singular sablah). In Harat al-Bilad, Manah, there were nine semi-public sablahs, mostly designated for the use of a particular tribe and their client groups.

They were distinguished from the private reception rooms of the dwellings of the affluent families. Sablat al-Wali was named after its more extended function as the reception room and office for the local governor (wali).

Sablat Khamis bin Rashid, in Harat as-Saybani, Birkat al Mawz, is, instead, an example of a communal sablah used by the Bani Tawbah tribe. It occupies the first floor of a structure adjoining a house that accommodates, on the ground floor, a wheat grinding stone (raha) accessed from both within the house and the passage flanking it.
