Letter From the Founders You only have one chance to make a first impression. That’s why as we write this our hearts are pounding and our palms are sweaty. We are launching a men’s lifestyle magazine for the bold, genuine and brave and these first words are only the beginning of this journey. Archibald Men was born out of a spark ignited by passion for men’s fashion and three too many Old Fashioned’s. We were inspired in that moment to follow our dreams and develop something that would challenge the status quo. We envisioned a magazine that would be on every refurbished wood coffee table and in the stores of every bespoke tailor. Archibald Men is designed to be a resource. It is a guide to living a smart, meaningful and luxurious life. The challenge of the format became an opportunity. From start to finish, every item in this magazine carefully curated and placed with intent. There is a first time for everything. Something we discovered in the process of developing this magazine. There are first ideas, first revisions, and now your first impression of the first edition. We hope that you enjoy living the Archibald Men lifestyle as much as we do. This might be our first, but it won’t be our last. ArchibaldMen Lifestyle for the Genuine and Brave !

s the days become shorter, darker and colder, it can become increasingly less motivating to exercise. For many runners this becomes the off-season as their mileage and conditioning drops – but does it have to? The winter months are an excellent time to focus on run-specific strength conditioning to ensure that you remain injury-free and enhance your performance for the spring race season.

Travel Cool Your Jets!
Saavy travelers know there is no better cure for cramped seating and hours of boredom than snagging a sophisticated stopover at one of these airports.

San Francisco International Airport What’s the best way to shake off the stress of extra long security lines? SFO has recently replaced “delays” with “downward dog” thanks to the addition of a peaceful Yoga Room, believed to be the first of it’s kind! Of course if breaking a sweat is not your style you can enjoy the splendor of Sonoma without leaving the airport. Pull up a stool at Vino Volo in Terminal 2 and let the calming effects of a California Cab wash over you.
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport Like a perfectly tailored suit, this international hub has stood the test of time, with nearly 100 years of pleasing passengers in the same location! And it’s no wonder: the airport is home to the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, a museum that showcases

masterpieces by iconic Dutch painters like Van Gogh. If you’re looking to try your luck at the opposite end of the cultural spectrum take a moment at the Holland Casino where you can work on converting your dollars to euros.
London Heathrow Airport London’s world class terminal five gives business travelers more than just a solid internet connection. Leading British brand, Thomas Pink, has not only mastered the art of shirt but the art of customer service. They will iron your new suit and put it in a flightready package for a wrinkle-free arrival. Traditionally the words “plane food” are synonymous with stale sandwiches, striking fear into the hearts (and stomachs) of foodies everywhere - that is, until Gordon Ramsay opened a high-end eatery of the same name. Make a reservation and relax with a pint and three-course meal.

Singapore Changi Airport Looking to start your tropical vacation early? How about a dip in a Balinese-themed rooftop pool or de-stress in a two-storey enclosed butterfly garden. This fantasy playground’s endless amenities will have you so blissed out that missing your connection could be more of a blessing than a curse.
Dubai International Airport If you’re craving unapologetic extravagance then look no further the terminal-cumtourist destination of the Middle East’s aviation hub. Jet-setting with excess baggage? Lighten your wallet shopping at the 58,000 square foot duty-free shop. Skip the souvenir stand and give the gift of the Midas touch: where else can you pick up gold bouillon bars in bulk?

A CLASSIC
DISTILLED The anatomy of the Old Fashioned.
The gentleman’s quintessential cocktail. The anatomy of which is the forefather of them all including Manhattans and Martinis, although the term ‘old-fashioned’ did not appear until the latter part of the 19th century. Quite literally, it denoted the formula of a cocktail the way it used to be before bar-tenders began to ‘improve’ and make ‘fancy’ the simplest and purest recipes. RECIPE ON THE NEXT PAGE

Patrons of an older generation dismissed the new fancy concoctions that added a dash of Absinthe, Curacao, or other liqueurs. Bartenders began to adorn their cocktails with many fruits, berries and herbs of the season, thus making them into fanciful fruit salads and slurries of muddled fruit as opposed to the traditional cocktail. The purists of an older generation, however, dismissed these concoctions, harkening back to a simpler time when the formula of the cocktail was intended to let the base spirit of choice shine through. The definition of the cocktail as it first appeared in print in 1806 – “…spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters, vulgarly referred to as bittered-sling…” The ‘sling’ itself is the granddaddy of the classic cocktail. As the eye-opener of the day, it was taken in the morning back in the 1600-1700’s before caffeine was exported to the West, a basic mix of their spirit of choice with sugar and water, and the method was to ‘sling’ it back in one gulp. One would give the imbiber the vigor, the get-up-and-go to do their everyday jobs and duties. That is, if you had one! The addition of bitters was the evolution point that accented the base spirit, and bitters became the salt & pepper seasoning of the classic cocktail. RECIPE Knob Creek Holiday Spiced Old Fashioned. Combine following in mixing glass. Just double, triple, or quadruple portions based on how many cocktails. 1½ oz Knob Creek ½ oz spiced simple syrup (simmer mulling spices of clove, cinnamon, all spice and star anise into 1 cup of boiling water. Seal and let steep overnight. Strain away spices and reheat infused liquid. Bring to boil, remove from heat, and stir in 2 cups of raw sugar until dissolved. Let stand to room temperature. Fortify with 1 oz bourbon. Will keep two weeks refrigerated. Makes 50 Old Fashioneds!)
36
This anatomy of the cocktail can be further simplified into this formula, each having its own role: Base – self-explanatory, the base flavour. Modifiers – sugar and water most efficiently mixed together in syrup. Adds balance, opens up the concentrated flavor in concentrated alcohol. Accent – aromatic bitters and citrus peel, accentuating the base spirits and enhancing the more complex flavours of the base spirit such as oak, baking spices, citrus and herbs. The final addition to this formula, a citrus peel, was first documented in 1862 by “The Professor” Jerry Thomas, in his “BonVivants Companion or How To Mix Drinks”. Here he describes the “Whiskey Cocktail”, essentially a cocktail, made with Whiskey, accented with a lemon peel. Thus making it the quintessential Whisk(e)y cocktail, which would eventual evolve into the Manhattan.

Experiment with other styles of bitters at your leisure!) Add cracked ice, or good solid cubes that are less than 24 hrs old and have not taken on any odors of contents of freezer…stir with bar spoon for at least 21 stirs, about 10 seconds.
