aluminum struts and spider clips which were also designed digitally and cut out of flat aluminum stock. As shown in the diagram to the lower left, the curtain wall modules were held to each other at a central ring connection which was used to attach the modules to a larger structural suspension system. This project set forth an agenda to prove the viability of fabrication in producing a full scale building module which could be produced through a process of exporting digital design data to the CNC and Water Jet equipment. As shown below, the wall was designed, rendered, and extracted from Maya into the physical wall unit. The final fabricated module, shown to the right, spans three feet in length and six feet in height and represents a full scale component. All the properties of bending and material thickness were simulated in Maya while remaining true to their physical nature and aesthetic quality.

The curtain wall module system is held together through a lattice work of structural ribs as shown above. Each rib contains five layers of 1/8” sintra laminated onto a 3 foot by 18” elliptical sheet of clear acrylic. The laminated rib is tensioned into an arch by a system of aluminum connectors and struts shown above. This metallic system contains hardware for rib to rib connection as well as for the suspension of a larger acrylic enclosure panel. The center panel is secured to the central rib at the widest part of the ellipse allowing it to more effectively resist wind load. The enclosure panel is secured to the rib with a system of aluminum struts and spider clips shown to the left. These spider clips are cut from

from flat aluminum stock, bent and slotted into place to obtain structural stability. In addition, each structural rib module contains a secondary acrylic panel secured perpendicular to the face of the elliptical section to gain protective surface area within each curtain wall section. This relationship is shown in the diagram to the left. The photographs document the physical execution of this detail study. All hardware, laminated panels, and physical material properties were calculated digitally and cut out of flat sheet stock. The primary emphasis of this project was to obtain structural stability through a method of folding and laminating layers of 1/8â&#x20AC;? sintra, acrylic and thin sheets of aluminum. Through this process, I was able to transform a light grade plastic system into an industrial grade building assembly.

Fall 2006 Advanced VI Core III An assembly of the curtain wall modules produces an interior condition like the one shown above. This system is suspended off of a larger concrete rib structure, allowing it to remain relatively light weight. The superstructure is anchored into the river bed and contains cables connecting it to the central rings that hold the curtain wall modules together. Combined with the pre-cast concrete docking panels, the entire ferry terminal is designed to act as a climactic intermediary between the island of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Waterfront Redevelopment.

The gestural form announces the presence of the commuter water taxi and allows it to become a beacon of public transit on the new waterfront promenade. The transparent nature of this structure allows commuters to have an unobstructed 360 degree view of both Brooklyn and the arriving ferry. As shown in the renderings, the docking panels provide for seating as well as walking surface among the crevices and grassy areas. The voronoi geometry creates a waterfront park whose surface area is constantly disappearing and reappearing with the ebb and flow of the tide.

Assemblage
The wedge plates is used for holding folds together into a flat plate during cooling. The wedge is kept as a part of the assembly.
The 4â&#x20AC;&#x2122; linear heating element was cantilevered off of the work surface to reach edges of the complex pyramidal shapes. Each of the eighteen cells was bent into the pyramid shape using the jig shown to the lower left. Joint lines were heated to the point of mobility and formed around the pentagonal jig surface representing the top face of each cell. The cells were then assembled into the complex fabric shown below using 1â&#x20AC;? bolts and plastic gusset plates. A propane torch was used on site to reheat and rebend joints and surfaces which required realignment to fit within the larger matrix. As shown to the right, a circular cut was made at each location within the cell where three or more edges meet. This allowed flexibility in the acrylic to obtain a more precise bend without the material intersecting itself.

The diagram below illustrates the connective strategy between the various cells within the matrix. Although each cell is unique, this folded connective geometry remains universal. The cell to cell connector tabs are a continuation of the pyramidal form of the cell in its flat condition. The two halves of the tab are bent up into a pocket and locked together by the gusset plate shown below. The gusset plate fuses the two halves of the connector tab together and becomes an intermediary between two cells within the assembly. As shown in the diagram and photographs aa, bb, and cc, the connective geometry forms a porous opening within the cellular fabric once all tabs are joined with those of the adjacent cell. In this manner there is a contrast between the solidity of the cellular pyramid containing a flat face and the holes formed by connecting one pyramid to two or three others. The final aggregation, shown to the right, measures 10 feet long by 6 feet high and takes the form of an â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sâ&#x20AC;? in plan to maintain structural stability.

The Double Layer System is a continued study of our Pentagonal Bubble Wall. We mirrored the cellular surface along its pentagonal face to create a more structurally rigid component system. The pentagonal face now becomes a gusset plate that is used to fasted two pyramidal cells together at the strongest connection point with the cells sharing more connective surface area. In this way, the Pentagonal Bubble Wall effectively exists as a hybridized mesh, acting as both skin and structure simultaneously.
