There is a sleek elegance to the voluptuous clean curves of this plywood structure. Compositionally it sits half has high as it is wide. Tentsion sits firmly on the ground, while lifting up to the sky with its off center courtyard/chimney. The structure is beautiful in its purity, combining wood and rope to form a thin light shell, while the interior consists of a wooden sleeping bench, and gravel filled courtyard. The contrast of the stone floored courtyard, and its thin plywood walls reaching to the sky - seemingly defying gravity - is a poetic relationship in itself.
Because the minimalistic building method, using only plywood and rope to form the shell, and plywood and gravel to form the interior. This Shelter does not take on large material costs. Rather it is through the manipulation, and transformation of these cheep materials by human hands, that they gain their high functionality. The proposed structure and building method will allow for a community engaged building process, in which many members of all ages can take part in its assembly. While the structure is simple enough to assemble with community help, the technical precision is accomplished through the CNC milling process which leaves no room for error. The material costs, and milling costs would be the largest to consider, but its value and added value through community engagement is invaluable in and of itself.
The structure is simply complex. Highly engineered and thoroughly designed to create a simple and easy to build structure. The stitching method for assembling the structure was chosen as the simplest, and most functional connection element which retains a mysterious quality. How many buildings have you seen that are sewn together? And yet you walk around in cloths every day. I think this structures simplicity is also visible in its concept and floor plan. It is the most elegant, and economical solution, to a social and environmental question.
How do you create a private shelter in a public space, that embraces both the interior and the exterior world?
