NEW ARCHIP LIBRARY STUDIO NASADIL - DUBA // SUMMER 2016/17

MARIA OROZCO / AD 2

BRIEF

NEW ARCHIP SCHOOL Prague, Czech Republic Studio brief The brief is to design the new Archip School how you would like to see it. The existing premises are stretched to their limits and Archip will inevitably move in the future. The School continues profiling itself as an international school of architecture now with a strong identity of being in Prague 7. The school intends to enhance its identity in the area as that of a good neighbor, an intellectual and architectural design center where young minds interact with their locality through engaging in projects that are improving the face of Prague 7. The site is for Nasadil / Duba studio is located on the corner of Frantiska Krizka / Skalecka streets and forms a missing corner of a town block. The site is within a minute walking distance of the current Archip premises and will be closely studied prior to any design proposals being made. The context of the site will be analyzed and significance within Prague 7 and Letna will be discussed. The approximity to Letna Gardens, Expo pavilion and various education facilities, as well as important historical monuments will play a role forming the concept proposals for the new building. The topography is complicated as well as immediate adjacencies of the site with issues of access, town scape and scale. We will concentrate on the proposals being sensitive to their context, as well as contemporary addition to the Prague 7 entourage of good quality modern buildings. The brief for the new building is attached in a separate document with areas as guidenance for the accommodation that the management of the school is seeking to achieve. The format of the school and adjacencies of the programme will be up to students to propose and arrange on a particular site in Prague 7. Students will be looking at examples and references of architecture schools worldwide, as well as projecting their own imagination to how Archip should be formed. We will be looking at excursions to schools of architecture in Prague – UMPRUM, AVU, CVUT - the closest references. P. Nasadil, M. Duba, 01/2017

DESIGN STATEMENT

ARCHIP LIBRARY CONCEPT: Correlation between the space and the garden According to the analysis of the area and the surronding buildings, I find 5 things that for me is very escencial for our library, and I develop my project in the following things: 1. The privacity (Of the terrain). 2. The view (To the city). 3. The green areas inside. (letna). 4. The light (Natural lighting). 5. The simplicity. (Space). According with this characteristics I decided to construct 2 twins buildings, similars in the facade, but diferents in their functions. The objective of these two buildings is that each be the complement of the other, along with the garden. That in the end the three elements (2 buildings and jarddin) work as one. But, how will this happen? In the first building (A) you can find, the library space, the study space and two mix toilets. Taking advantage of the inclination of the land, the multipourpose roof of this building will finish 0.70 meters above the level of the retaining wall. Here will start a terrace with the shape of stairs, to invite external people to join the outdoor exhibitions and the view. This is protected by a rail, which prevent falls. The door that leads to the garden, located on the left side, in the study space, will also have this terrace in the form of stairs with 3 large steps (0.90 meters wide by 0.45 meters high), with the purpose of inviting the Public in general to make use of the garden, and to encourage them to go to the cafeteria. So the objective to use the 3 elements at the same time (someone reading a book and drinking coffee, enjoying the outdoors and the view) will be fulfilled. The second building (B) have two toilets also, have the office, an archive room and the cafeteria. The cafeteria will have two doors, one in front of the other , the one that leads to the city view, will have another terrace with the shape of 4 big steps with the same measure (0.90m wide, 0.45 hight) all this terraces in the whole area will have integrate small steps, which will allow the ascent and descent, (0.5 hight, 0.30 wide). The other door just lead to the garden. Thanks to the possition of the buildings, the lighthing and the ventilation will be natural, most part of the day. The simplicity is another aspect important for me, so, glass and concrete are the building materials.
