Our Sustainability Vision

At Archi+, we believe that sustainability and resiliency is more about changing attitude and culture than it is about satisfying requirements. ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR - RESIDENTIAL

COMPLETED 2024

A transformative project which celebrates the heritage of architect Alberto La Ferla’s architectural legacy, blending tradition with contemporary design. The design interventions respect the original fabric whilst ensuring a seamless connection between spaces, extending generously to the upper roof terrace. The project embraced a “Green Living” philosophy, guiding the transition from the old structure to a more open, occupiable space culminating in a lush rooftop landscape serving as a private retreat. The main functional focus of the architectural intervention is on maximizing the house’s potential as a family-friendly, open-plan living space with innovative elements permeating the project, from creative material and colour choices to the careful selection of bespoke furniture.

ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR - RESIDENTIAL

COMPLETED 2020

The goal of this project was to optimize the unique location’s amenities while addressing layout and construction issues. Despite luxurious features like an indoor pool, the building suffered from dampness, leading to damaged materials and poor ventilation. Our task was to renovate the entire structure efficiently, avoiding unnecessary costs. We utilized exposed shuttered concrete for its raw beauty and durability, replacing deteriorating stone cladding. The new concrete shell offers privacy and scenic views through carefully placed windows. By moving the living areas upstairs, we dedicated the lower rooms to bedrooms, storage, a home office, and an indoor pool with a sauna. The front garden received a contemporary refresh with enhanced soft landscaping, contrasting against the concrete backdrop.

This well-preserved townhouse became a young family’s home, preserving the original stone façade, internal staircase, and traditional tiles. An extension with a double-height volume separates the old and new sections, flooding the residence with natural light and featuring a fireplace reaching towards the sky. The new volume serves as the backdrop for the garden and pool area, with a clean aesthetic achieved through detailed steel channels embedded in insulation boards. The material palette maintains a minimal feel with neutrals, greys, black accents, and pops of color, complemented by subtle art deco references. The collaboration and dialogue with the clients were instrumental in creating their dream home, and it’s rewarding when they fully embrace the design vision and overcome challenges together

ARCHITECTURE - RESIDENTIAL

COMPLETED 2020

Our project aimed to transform traditional terraced houses into apartment blocks that embody architectural and urban quality, interior comfort, and increased market value. We focused on creating a crisp, clean, and bright volume with sharp perforations and black-framed floor-to-ceiling apertures, maximizing natural light and creating elegant vertical proportions. The main entrance features a black, natural stone cladding with a subtly integrated black main door, serving as a dark backdrop to the landscaped front garden. The front garden and outdoor steps were carefully designed with monolithic travertine, black accessories, and thoughtfully selected vegetation, adding to the elevated quality of the project.

Kucca Townhouse

INTERIOR - RESIDENTIAL

COMPLETED 2019

The project involved transforming a compact townhouse into boutique rental units while preserving the property’s character and adding a touch of raw luxury. The goal was to create a sense of place that instantly connects people to the space, whether inside or outside, capturing the essence of the Zebbug village community. The interior design embraced the existing old elements such as natural stone walls, timber beams, and traditional apertures, which influenced the overall design language. By complementing the original fabric with natural timbers, marbles, and ample natural light, we achieved the desired end result.

ARCHITECTURE - INTERIOR - RESIDENTIAL

Our clients desired a stunning and contemporary design, presenting us with an exciting challenge that we eagerly accepted. Throughout the project, our main focus was on combining these elements to guide our design decisions. The standout feature of the property is a beautiful rubble wall surrounding the site, creating a connection to the local vernacular. Inside the villa, the design blurs the boundaries between contrasting elements. While the front facade is mostly solid, the back is open, fulfilling the client’s request for openness and ample natural light, seamlessly merging the living space and pool area. The ground floor boasts a large openplan layout, cleverly divided by a split level that introduces an impressive staircase and a sculptural fireplace. Consistent materials, including travertine, off-shutter concretes, and black accents, create a cohesive palette both inside and outside the property.

This building has a turbulent past, having been converted into a three-story storage space with disjointed levels and a lack of synergy. While granted permission to retain the three levels, we opted to restore parts of the house to its original two-level layout. A defining feature is the L-shaped concrete intersection that separates the front portion into two high-ceilinged spaces, creating a formal sitting room in the main living area. The back side of the structure maintains the three-level program, housing a functional living space with a kitchen, two bedrooms, and ancillary spaces. The unique semi-transparent staircase seamlessly connects the spaces behind the beautifully finished flooring of the main entrance, ensuring functionality and a harmonious integration.

WON SPECIAL COMMENDATION AT THE 2016 MALTA ARCHITECT AWARDS FOR INTERIOR DESIGN

Situated on the 3rd floor of a prestigious apartment block, with a serene view of the ta’ Xbiex marina, this 270sqm unit enjoys abundant natural light due to its corner location. The unconventional curved shell presented a unique challenge but ultimately guided the design approach. Delicately balancing the elegance of the upscale setting, raw concretes, steels, and industrial elements were introduced, while retaining the natural state of marble claddings where functional. The open-plan layout was defined by curves and a series of curtains, offering versatile setups for various use scenarios.

The found space, located on a prominent thoroughfare in central Malta, was an under-utilized, dimly lit rectangular volume with limited ventilation. Despite its depth of 51m and lack of natural amenities, the high ceilings offered a redeeming quality. The main challenges were to create an inviting and diverse environment and to establish a connection with the outdoors. A combination of right angles and curves was employed to achieve a balanced interplay of sharp and blunt elements, facilitating contrast and spatial transitions between different zones. The boardrooms, along with the Café, Workspace, and Training Hall, formed the three main areas, with ancillary utility rooms situated within the angles created by the main volumes. Unique design elements included a perpendicular angle for the kitchenette and booths, circular seating in the workspace to contrast with the surrounding angular elements, and a folding desk for flexible use. This project demonstrates how discarded architectural shells can be transformed into functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces, even in densely urbanized areas.

We were commissioned to design and finish the premises for BUSINESSLABS, a plug and play serviced office and co-working environment. Our goal was to create a flexible and comfortable workspace that appeals to a diverse range of businesses. The challenge was to merge a welcoming design with a professional corporate image, without relying on conventional finishing and clinical color coding. We implemented a bespoke way-finding system to guide users towards various work and recreational areas within the premises, including meeting rooms, offices, co-working spaces, and ancillary amenities.

Architecture as a profession demands a balance of productivity and creativity, and this principle guided the design of our offices in Lija. The existing building featured a typical beam and column concrete construction with showroom openings facing south/southwest. Our focus was on improving thermal comfort and creating outdoor spaces on the first floor. By transforming one aperture into a terrace, we established a shaded area for relaxation. Additionally, we replaced all windows with double-glazed ones for enhanced natural ventilation. Inside, we enjoyed complete freedom in the spacious 4m high open plan. The layout organized the client and creative spaces, with a minimalistic reception area leading to freestanding volumes that divide the main workspace from client-facing areas. The workspace featured black and white desks, complemented by green corrugated panelling and an abundance of indoor plants. The playful interior design showcased exposed plywood, timber frame storage elements that provided additional worktops, shelving, and screening between workstations.

Estate Agent Office 01

INTERIOR - COMMERCIAL

COMPLETED 2018

Our task was to design a clean and fresh aesthetic for a local real estate agent’s new offices in St. Paul’s Bay. The challenge involved unifying a split-level small office space while meeting functional requirements for the real estate operations. To achieve this, we introduced a holistic material language with crude steel sections and overlapping plywood boards. This dynamic created a sense of contrast with the predominantly white interior and formed a composed pavilion-like structure that extended to the upper level. The concept of an “industrial pavilion” emphasized directionality and provided storage capabilities. The floating shelved structure allowed for an optimized desk layout that met the client’s needs.

Estate Agent Office 02

COMPLETED 2019

After completing the St. Paul’s Bay offices, we were commissioned to design another office within the same franchise. Despite the different site, we aimed to maintain a similar concept and atmosphere in both interiors. The main challenge of the new space was its compactness and reliance on a single front door for light. To address this, we utilized lightweight hollow steel sections and plywood panels to create modular storage cabinetry that also served as a subtle divider between the public lounge area and the office workstations. These inserts added contemporary lines that framed the original masonry arches, which remained the project’s focal point and evoked a sense of change.

COMPLETED 2017

The project involved designing and managing bespoke interiors for AAT Research, a company focused on cutting-edge medical technologies. The challenge was to integrate specialized high-tech operations with the need for a comfortable living space. To achieve this, we embraced the concept of an “industrious home office,” blending colorful homely elements with an industrial aesthetic, informed by the company’s cognitive research and contemporary office environment studies.

We were given a unique opportunity to work on a 420 sqm floor plate with glass walls, offering panoramic views over central Malta. Inspired by the tower’s architecture, we used soft curves to define spaces and create a seamless flow. A “loop corridor” became the main channel, surrounded by workspaces and amenities. Outside the loop, there are outward-looking offices, while inside the loop, there are storage, printing, and wet areas. The reception area provides direct access to waiting areas and boardrooms, while employee workstations and the south-facing kitchenette with terrace access are on the opposite side. Distinct flooring and ceiling treatments were used to differentiate guest and employee spaces, with elegant dark marble tiles and white soffits for guests, and less formal stone tiles and exposed services for employees.

ARCHITECTURE - COMMERCIAL

COMPLETED 2021

For this project we were commissioned as design consultants on the communal spaces and architecture of the property. The main challenge of the location was to create a design language that was contemporary without jarring with the existing, eclectic urban context. In order to achieve this a very restrained material palette was selected incorporating painted plain and decorative bricks. This gives the façade a textural quality without drawing too much attention to itself.

Nestled among the trees along Valley Road, this project embraced simplicity and minimalism in its design. The color scheme was reduced to a single shade, expressed in various textures, while the architectural structure featured clean and linear geometries. The front facade, composed solely of horizontal elements, offered a graceful white backdrop against the leafy street, which filtered sunlight to create a play of shadows. Inside, two vibrant colors were strategically applied to furniture, ceilings, walls, and floors, infusing the spaces with energy and instinctive appeal. Natural materials were predominantly used throughout, showcasing their authentic hues and textures. Thoughtfully integrated fitted furniture enhanced functionality and provided a gentle, immersive experience for users within the interior.

Our intervention at 211, Republic Street honors the building’s rich history as Xmun Borg’s Bakery and Confectionery, and later as a jazz bar. We aimed to blend the industrial aesthetic of the modern eatery with the softer lines reminiscent of its confectionery and music hall past. This relationship guided our design decisions, from restoring the scheduled sign on the facade to incorporating a playful typographic mural inside. The main dining room showcases contemporary colors on traditional Maltese floor tiles. We also addressed the awkward access to the dining room by creating a custom furniture piece made of arching timber sections, contrasting with the traditional masonry arches and turning the passage into a highlight of the restaurant interior.

The ambient atmosphere is created through a mixture of dark and reflective materials, with lighting helping to distinguish the various areas of the lounge, including the bar, VIP lounge, large lounge, informal seating area, and lounge booths.

The aesthetic becomes uniquely synonymous with the retailer and the floating feeling of the counter offers a guiding feeling through the shop. Sticking to the theme of unsung glory, storage space is inserted beneath the eye’s natural movement. Situated at Msida Circus, our task was to design the interiors and façade of Adagio Malta Central, the first Aparthotel in the area. With its proximity to the University of Malta and central areas, our aim was to create contemporary and comfortable spaces for both short and long stays. The façade design broke away from typical apartment-like facades with a bold and playful yet minimal approach, incorporating warmer color tones that harmonized with the surroundings. Timber elements on the ground floor added warmth, complemented by deep mauves and greys, while the bedroom floors focused on clean lines and muted colors to prioritize functionality and comfort.

COMPLETED 2022

As design consultants for a hotel project, our goal was to create an elegant and functional space that merged the strengths of a local developer and an international hotel franchise. With the architectural shell already in place, we combined interior design techniques with franchise guidelines to ensure a confident and aesthetically pleasing result. The interiors were infused with strong local themes, drawing inspiration from Malta’s rugged landscapes and indigenous flora. Soft arched geometries, tactile surfaces, ample upholstery, and a bold color palette complemented the rawness of nature. To unify the design, we incorporated prickly pear motifs as a recognizable icon throughout the project, including in carpet patterns, sculptures, and room number signage. This allowed us to meet the requirements of the tourism industry while maintaining the hotel interior’s distinctive design language.

BEACH ARCHITECTURE SYSTEM

SMALL PROJECTS - INSTALLATION

COMPLETED 2022

The task of redesigning a lifeguard tower for local beaches was presented to the design team by the Malta Tourism Authority. The priorities of the brief were clear from the beginning - to create a structure with a low visual and environmental impact, that can support, shelter and house 2-4 lifeguards and their equipment. During the winter months, it was important that the structure is completely and easily demountable by the MTA’s employees and transportable to nearby storage.

An important impetus for going through with this project was to create a holistic system for locally designed, sourced, and maintained beach installations to replace the previous non-systematic approach to procurement of such structures, which oftentimes did not cater for practical dismantling and storage.

Although the functional and practical constraints where considerable, it was important to establish an instantly recognisable silhouette, using a cohesive and minimal aesthetic palette. Over several iterations, the design was optimized while also being able to withstand the harsh summers that can exist with such proximity to the sea.
