A 165 sq m. residence designed with an influence of Vaastu Shastra, an ancient architectural specification based on building physics. The envelope has a strong brutalist style which is complemented with the neutral colour scheme.

The research started in 2014 inspired from LiTraCon by architect Áron Losonczi. Objective of the research is to make walls transparent using optical fibers which is a potential e-waste in near future. The material is still in the development stage.

The project “Goods Lane” is an initiative by Sydney city inspired from“The High Line” in New York. The proposal was to redesign the urban pathway with ambient lighting system to pull the crowd. The proposed design focused on night experience of the urban walk. The competition was for innovative ideas to develop a new genre of park cultivating the notion of spatial design and planning as well as creating a recreational center at the regional scale. The presence of design schools in the locality opened the scope for activities.

Death is a universal phenomenon, the only truth known to every man after his birth. It’s a truth that its the only fact which inspires our life for every decision we take. We have the tendency of doing everything to achieve before facing death. Its very existence dictates how to live, to conduct oneself and the meaning of life. A tenuous grasp of death could lead one to side step the issues of the loss of a loved one. Securing an even foothold with the phenomenon and inculcating the idea that a loved one is leaving for a better place, is crucial to the development of a healthy coping mechanism. A final good bye to our beloved ones to another world needs to be in a place of defined environment satisfying all the religious needs to show the spiritual respect for the departed soul. “The portal” is one of its kind project which sets the backdrop for the connection space between the ontological world and real world. The project looks forward for space for final see off, at the same time it also is a space for three religion coming together. The design facilitates ritual areas for Hindus, Muslims and Christians meanwhile giving more importance to impact on nature due to disposal of body.

DR HOUSE Site: Location: Area:

Kallingal Nedumangad,Trivandrum 566.5 sq m

The DR residence, a highly vastu influenced project, is a predominantly contemporary projectlocated at Nedumangad, Trivandrum. The structure is a matrix of intersection of slanted planes, where these slants are directed so as to bring in the maximum of Eastern light. The house being oriented in the east west direction, brings in the morning light through a tilted panel of Louvers set on the first floor or the facade. These louvres also act as a wind tower bringing in a breeze into the house at all times. Thus climatically adaptive at a passive level, as well as sound in terms of vastu, house maintains the concepts it was built on

Task: Material & joinery design, Video presentation.

The research started during second year of under graduate program (2014).Later in 2015 the research was developed as part of architectural dissertation. The project is focused in the development of sustainable building material using optical fibers, a potential e-waste in the near future. Optical fibers are used in the communication sector and is widely used for its capability in fast and effective data transmission without loss. They have the capability of carrying light from one end to other. Although there are materials with similar properties, this project is trying to find a meaningful solution to sustainability in energy, economy and elegance. The initial prototype (bricks) was used in the project “DR House” and is successful in terms of structural stability and durability. The research primarily focuses on the physical properties of the material which includes U value, Daylight factor and life cycle assessments. The product was further developed during post graduation program at the university. Currently, the material is theoretically suitable for high raised buildings in Australia and further development is happening in the design of reflectors for the even distribution of daylight into the interiors. This research is looking forward for further developments through collaborations with other industrial experts in the coming years.

CURRENT SITUATION PROPOSED DESIGN

Associated with Studio Commune A network of tamed and engineered nature signifies the sole purpose of landscape planning and design. Beyond the needs of shelter, humans have created, regulated and experimented with built, such that, they have tamed the un-built in order to appreciate the built. Farther from the untamed, closer to the jungles of built;humans have designed spaces that are pre-defined to entertain. The designers’dictatorship and citizens subordination has created controlled spaces and landscapes. Can designed landscapes be plural and significant? Can landscape design evolve as a conscious integration of tamed and the untamed? The proposed scheme for Bandirma, questions the notions of tamed environment.Amidst the quagmire of future development characterized by intense migration, alienation, densification, disgust, pollution, fragmentation and structural disintegration, the park will play a significant role in the cultural expression of its people - Design shaping the urban spaces and urban phenomena shaping the design pedagogy. As zone for recreation, Bandirma Park draws from the present city the impressions of the past, wound into a knot (Dügümü) to be extended to the growing corridors of the future metropolis. In the urban cultural landscape of Bandirma, the project aims to address the untamed nature of landscape to satisfy the visual diet into an ever evolving public space . Thus the project challenges the notion of designed space and emphasizes on the plural logic of space, transforming Bandirma into a ‘Central Park’.Space as an entity, space as a notion and space as an artifact, that which is characterized by constant dialogue between the city dwellers, designers and the city. Bandirma Dügümü is quintessential to the fabric of the future city, that is in constant negotiation with its citizens: An ever evolving cultural landscape characterized by, untamed nature, the migrant culture, the urban bazaars, learning centres, cinema, shopping, human interaction etc. – A true URBAN BRICOLAGE.
