November 09 Discussion points in recent news have surrounded the subject of women and skyscrapers and the essence of true Architecture. Both The Times and The Guardian invest time and column inches in reporting on the ever-changing world of architecture; its substance, its integrity and its future. The Times recently held an interview with global architect David Chipperfield. The purity of his architecture and simplicity that is at the heart of his designs has always mirrored the form of nature and Chipperfield tells the reader that his designs always intend to evoke what is at the heart and in the very foundation of the buildings he creates. A compelling interview and a beautiful reminder of what design really means to the architect at the root of it all. of Chicago’s newest skyscraper and the headline alludes to a discussion point of female architects designing skyscrapers. Familiar names and faces crop up to discuss why they think that female architects designing our lofty buildings is so rare and what Jeanne Gang has accomplished in the stunning Chicago scraper. Of course the phallic connotations of a skyscraper lead the discussion on to a question whether that has an affect on the decision and how more and more female architects are now stepping into the realm of the steeping structure, taking their place amongst the most powerful practices and lending their design expertise to the gargantuan projects of today. News brief... HLM ARCHITECTS SEEKS PLANNING PERMISSION HLM Architects has recently submitted the designs for Cornwall’s new Brannel School for planning approval. It is hoped that the new school, which will cost £16.3 million to build, will achieve planning approval by October 2009, with construction works starting on site early 2010 and the new facilities completed for the start of the 2011 academic year. It is intended that the school will achieve BREEAM Excellent. The new school is needed to replace existing Brannel School buildings, which have become beyond economical repair. The new buildings will provide 6,622 square metres (about 71,000 square feet).
DESIGN AWARDS TURN TO NIGHTINGALE ASSOCIATES The Viking Day Unit in Margate and the University of Oxford’s Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Unit have been shortlisted in the Turning to Timber category of the annual Builder & Engineer Awards. University of Oxford’s MEG Unit, shortlisted for the award, is a purposebuilt Magnetoencephalography scanner unit and was designed by Nightingale Associates for the department of psychiatry at the university. The facility is housed in a single storey building on a magnetically ‘quiet’ site. The Viking Day Unit in Margate was also shortlisted. The project transformed an existing day unit of six chemotherapy chairs. The new building had to deliver space without functional compromises and attempt to radically improve the patients’ experience.
State-of-the-art learning Devereux Architects has changed the way children learn in its latest project, Monkseaton High School, after introducing a 360 degree teaching environment to improve performance levels in the classroom. Monkseaton High School has already grabbed the headlines for its state-of-the-art facilities and has been commended for its green, eco-friendly features. But as the new, futuristic, ellipse-shaped school opens its doors for the first time, the pupils will walk into a whole new learning environment. The design, beyond the formal teaching spaces, incorporates a number of learning areas for students to study independent of teachers. The light, airy feeling created throughout the school encourages ‘open’ learning and is a move away from traditional, ‘institutional’ school design. Commissioned by North Tyneside Council, the £22m contract was awarded to Devereux Architects to design a new community high school
The landmark ‘lantern’ is lifted A 32 metre-high ‘lantern’ platform, which will allow visitors to take in panoramic views across Stratford, has been positioned at the top of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s new tower. The glass and steel viewing platform, which will accommodate up to 50 people, was built on the ground and lifted into place by a 300 tonne mobile crane. It will sit on the magnificent new Theatre Tower built by eight specialist

in Monkseaton. Ian LancastleSmith, Director of the Devereux Architects team, took up this challenge and endeavoured to create an education environment which responds to the way subjects are delivered and learned in the 21st Century. The innovation carries on throughout the new school. The interior is open, so you can see from one side of the school to the other, creating ‘passive surveillance’ to prevent bullying and anti-social behaviour. Devereux Architects has also incorporated ‘toilet pods’ into the design, so toilets can only be used by one individual at a time, preventing vandalism. Devereux Architects ensured that the building was positioned in the most sustainable area on site, reducing the effect of heating and cooling. The school has an abundance of sustainable features, not only reducing its carbon footprint but also creating an environment to maintain optimum performance levels during the school day.

Leigh’s Labour MP Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Health officially opened the landmark housing development scheme on Lord Street, Leigh on 4 September including Rueben’s Court and Leigh Community Resettlement Service. Adactus Housing and Ark Design and Architecture have worked closely with Wigan Borough Council and Richmond Fellowship, a specialist provider of mental health services, to provide spacious, high quality apartments for 14 people living with the effects of mental ill health. Richmond Fellowship is one of the biggest voluntary sector providers of mental health care in England, supporting over 7,500 people towards the best possible quality of life for each individual. The building which is owned by Adactus draws on local historical cues and expresses its residential
nature in the arrangement of full height windows as seen on Victorian terraces in Leigh. Ian Moores, Director of Ark Design and Architecture commented at the time, “The launch marked the beginning of a positive impact, both to the surrounding environment and certainly to the lives of its residents.” Maggie Hysel, Chief Executive of Richmond Fellowship says, ‘’This new development demonstrates our belief that the highest quality housing is at the heart of the mental health recovery journey, enabling each person to make choices and gain confidence at their own pace, with the individual support they need to live life to the full”. The £1.9m scheme is under a year old and has already received a commendation for its innovative design from Wigan Council’s Urban Design Awards.

The Royal Albert Hall opened its doors on 14th October to a new venue, the transformed Elgar Room. Steeped in history, the room will change in both space and capacity as state of the art technical specifications and a modern redesign help make it one of London’s premier entertainment spaces. The Elgar Room will now incorporate built in technical facilities and the flexibility to match any event requirement. This month’s question: What ultimate changes would the Gazprom Tower in St Petersburg bring to the city?
Architect Will Alsop recently misled the public with his announcement that he was leaving the architecture profession. After revealing the truth, it has been found that Alsop has in fact moved camps to work for RMJM and would continue his love of painting, merging abstract designs into new buildings. With Alsop’s move to RMJM base comes more conflict though, with the controversy that surrounds RMJM and their plans for the Gazprom Tower to be built in St Petersburg. The design of the tower will mean that, if approved it will become the tallest structure in Europe once completed. The conflict comes, as with approved permission, Unesco will withdraw St Petersburg from the list of World Heritage sites, ultimately changing the image of the city. What, in your opinion is the right thing to do? Should RMJM withdraw its plans or should Unesco allow for the Tower construction to commence without removing it from the World Heritage List? What ultimate changes would this structure bring to the city?

Cities should be allowed to take on board new and exciting developments and not be shrouded in a protective historical shield. We should respect history, but not linger in it. Modern structures can be built, which are in harmony with the historical fabric and respect the historical architectural traditions. New modern developments are allowed to be built in World Heritage Cities but they have to meet the high quality standards.

Apart from being in the wrong location, the solitary tower scale and height is even more accentuated by low base development, which appears to have more of an impact on the city. If this development goes ahead and UNESCO withdraws St. Petersburg from the list of World Heritage Sites, the implications could be disastrous and open the flood gates to more controversial tower developments which will be dotted around the periphery of the city
“If this development goes ahead and UNESCO withdraws St. Petersburg from the list of World Heritage Sites, the implications could be disastrous. ” Apart from the aesthetics and the design of the tower, the main concern, looking at the images, is the size, scale and height, which is obviously being built in the wrong location and is completely out of context with the horizontal proportioned historical City of St. Petersburg. The 400 meter tower will be four times higher than the maximum height of 100 metres permitted by existing planning rules in the city. If the development was further away from the city, it would be good to see a cluster of towers; slowly rising up to the main tower element, that would then

This development could be the catalyst for the future and St. Petersburg will become infected with the Dubai syndrome, an extremely vicious disease. company, with close ties to the higher echelons of Russian government – Guess who’s wearing the ‘trousers’ in this situation? The other question is how will the building be perceived in years to come? Will it stand proud representing the era it was conceived in, the symbol of Russia’s wealth and rebirth, comparable to the current historical monuments of St. Petersburg, such as the churches, Cathedrals and the neighbouring classical and baroque architecture with protruding spires and domes? The building should be a timeless icon of this era, an ‘Audrey Hepburn’ of buildings. Unfortunately, this building has no relation to the Historical City of St. Petersburg, and looks as if it could be situated in any city in the world! Currently the scheme looks like a ‘Britney Spears’ of buildings - Perhaps Will Alsop can put his Super architects suit on, and save the day. Hoorah!!!!

MWA TECHNOLOGY LIMITED TAKE ACTION IN THE INDUSTRY CALL FOR ACTION ON ILLEGAL AND DANGEROUS METER CONNECTIONS Two business executives are concerned about industry estimates that 90 percent of connections to third party UK primary gas meters are illegal. Martin Wardell of MWA Technology Limited, an independent metering supplier and Steve Lewis of Apex Engineers are worried that the national gas industry standard is being ignored and have combined to launch a service to offer site surveys. Wardell explains: “Real time monitoring of gas consumption means that companies are turning to energy monitoring companies – many not from the gas industry - to install equipment which enables them to connect to the third party fiscal meters and send consumption data directly to a central point. In order to do this they connect to a pulse output socket in the meter, but making this connection is regulated and should only be undertaken by an authorized person,” Lewis commented, “A major consequence of ignoring the standard could at worst be a fatal explosion or disconnection and removal of equipment”. The partnership between meter equipment supplier, MWA Technology and power and energy consultancy, Apex Engineers, provides a site survey service to ensure that gas connections are safe, in accordance with regulations and logged by the meter asset manager (meter owner).
NEW ANTICORROSION TAPES AVAILABLE FROM MWA TECHNOLOGY MWA Technology is offering Anticor anti-corrosion materials for passive and active protection, and a large range of self-adhesive industrial tapes. Anticor manufactures materials that provide stable and hermetic anticorrosion coatings for pipelines, tanks and similar applications. Hanson sets the responsible standard Hanson has been certified with the Responsible Sourcing of Materials (RSM) standard for two complete product lines – ready-mixed concrete and aggregates – covering nearly 300 UK production sites. The BRE Environmental and Sustainability Standard (BES) 6001:2008 has been awarded to Hanson’s quarry products division, which encompasses 212 ready-mixed concrete plants, 72 quarries and 40 per cent of the company’s UK workforce. The RSM standard covers the environmental and social issues for organisational management and supply chain

White light solution for Cenotaph Royal Philips Electronics’ (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI ) has provided a white light solution using the award winning CosmoPolis lamp and gear system to illuminate Middlesbrough Cenotaph. Making an exhibition Specially designed digitally printed high pressure laminates from ABET LAMINATI are being used for the innovative new ‘Curiosity’ interactive exhibition at Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery. ‘Curiosity’, a mini-museum for the Under-7s, is a fascinating interactive play space based around many different activities. Features such as the ‘crystal cave’, where stories can be told, the stage surround, where children can put on puppet shows, and the ‘animuddle’ game are all created using Abet’s Digital Print technology. The exhibition was designed by Simon Fenn and Polly Lewis with inhouse graphic designer Becky Sheppard. The perfect partner for timber windows The demand for the use of timber in housing projects has been recently revived due to architects, builders, the local authority and homeowners starting to fully appreciate its low carbon footprint, aesthetic appeal and environmental credentials. As a result, PDS worked alongside long established supplier, Quantum Profile Systems LTD, to develop a high performance bead system that was as equally environmentally friendly and respectful to its surrounding areas as the timber window. All of the bricks currently manufactured at Wienerberger's Warnham factory in West Sussex have achieved the accreditation. The BRE Global Environmental and Sustainability Standard (BES 6001) provides a framework for assessing the responsible sourcing of construction products. To meet the Standard, organisations must satisfy a number of requirements relating to organisational management, the supply chain, environmental issues and corporate social responsibility. A number of environmental initiatives at the Warnham site were recognised as part of the certification, including the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity and 30 per cent recycled water. We are currently exploring bio-mimicry on a project, which learns from Butterfly wings and how they reflect and absorb light and how this can create a highly effective skin of a building. Light emitting diodes have progressed in recent time by a similar technological transfer and have been applied to making visual displays on mobile devises more efficient.

What do you consider to be one of the best ‘green buildings’ built so far? I am fascinated by traditional mosques in the gulf region. These sacred buildings often employ wind towers that draw in hot air, channel it over a cistern of cool water and allow it to dramatically reduce the ambient air temperature of the prayer hall by way of convection. I also believe the most sustainable machine is the tree. When you think about it, what other machine can pump water 40 metres into the sky, all fed from sunlight, enriches the soil and converts carbon dioxide into oxygen?

How do you see the future of sustainable buildings evolving? Are we on the correct course or do you feel that there is a better way of promoting a sustainable approach through architecture? I do not believe that we will rely on technology to be the silver bullet of sustainability. We are seeing an increased awareness on learning from the past, alignment of building response to place and harnessing the power of nature to create environments that touch the earth lightly.

What do you hope to achieve through the BNZ project? This project is focused on creating a workplace, which is a business enabler of cultural change. The client is currently housed in three different locations and this project brings them together in a connected vertical campus that is transparent to the public and the customers they serve. The project also aims to be a good urban citizen by being the most advanced sustainable building in a country, which enjoys a long history of caring for the earth. The building was also a pilot project for the introduction of the Green Building Rating System in New Zealand.

Both were avid readers and our family home was stacked with art and architectural books. Accordingly, my introduction to architecture was by osmosis. Roof hatches for student accommodation New student accommodation at Loughborough University has benefitted from specially designed roof hatches from Surespan. Surespan was chosen by Laing O’Rourke, who constructed the £68 million project, to design and install a SRH roof hatch for each of the 23 new buildings, which provide accommodation for 1,300 students at the university. Consisting of a double lockable SRH hatch with drop down zip retractable ladder, they allow maintenance staff access to the roof for inspection purposes and to carry out statutory tests. Business Manager at the university Seamus O’Neil commented: “We are really pleased with the work carried out by Surespan. We have recently used the hatches to gain access to the roof in order to carry out an inspection of the lightening conductor, and found them very easy to use. Everything’s gone green Castle Quay is a contemporary development in the heart of Bedford’s new cultural quarter, an area that includes a number of bar/cafe/restaurant units. Curtain walling for Phoenix Place Phoenix Place located in Basildon, Essex is the head quarters of the local NHS primary health care trust. Dovetail Architects designed the building selecting W.A. Hills as the contractor with Comar Approved fabricator Anglia Fixing Limited complete the glazed element of the facade. Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems was a natural choice as they have designed their Comar 5Pi interfaces range, a set of bespoke profiles that mimic the edge of cladding panels so a window can be installed as if it were a panel. In this project the Kingspan Optimo range of cladding panels were selected in a light dust blue, at every storey ribbon windows were incorporated from the Comar 5Pi thermally efficient range. Comar 5Pi tilt and turn windows were selected which can be tilted to allow ventilation as well as, when unlocked, open in to allow cleaning from the inside. To the perimeter of these windows Comar CS486 and CS487 Kingspan cladding adaptors were fitted which allowed the window to be directly integrated into Kingspan without the need for additional flashings or packings. The Comar Cladding Interface creates peace of the mind for the client through the reduction in maintenance of flashings and the aesthetic appeal of the invisible integration. A NATURAL APPEARANCE The Forticrete Gemini Tile is often the preferred choice of Local Authorities and Housing Associations. Forticrete's Gemini maintains the appearance of a traditional plain tiled roof, thereby allowing the original architectural style to be retained. When compared with Concrete Plain tiles, the amount of CO2 produced in manufacturing the latest Forticrete Gemini tile, factoring in the difference in weight (75kg/m² v 45kg/m²) and quantity of tiles on the roof (60/m² v 16.3/m²), produced results – 40 per cent less. Forticrete’s Gemini roof tile was specified for the South Yorkshire Association’s 71 home development at Canklow Woods in Rotherham. The cost-effective alternative, provided a stylish and economical
alternative to Natural Slate, which was considered but rejected because of the cost implications. To satisfy the local planning requirments, the buildings had to fit in with the local vernacular and Cartwright Pickard looked at several different options and ideas before selecting Foricrete’s Gemini roof tiles. The tiles were cost effective and provided a close match in colour to the planners’ needs. Gemini is a large format interlocking tile that looks like two small format tiles when laid. Knauf AMF sheds light on production facilities The former home of Rowe Printers in Hayle, Cornwall has recently undergone major refurbishment. The old print room has been converted into a production area for computer repairs and refurbishments, requiring significant alterations to the ceilings, services and light fittings. Knauf AMF Light Boxes were specified for the project with 120 units being installed throughout the 500m2 area. Where an
opening is made in a fire-rated ceiling to install recessed light fittings, the fire-protecting capability of the ceiling is compromised. AMF Light Boxes are designed to seal the penetrations and maintain the fire integrity of the ceiling, offering a minimum of 60 minutes fire protection. AMF’s Light Boxes have been tested under mezzanine and timber floors as well as steel beams, with full certification from the
Warrington Fire Research Centre. The Light Boxes also reduce sound leakage through the light fitting and feature pre-mitred slots for side panel integration and location on the grid system. The initiative works. Secured By Design developments are proven to reduce crime and now The Department for Communities and Local Government (Home Office) is firmly backing the initiative. Advancements in underfloor heating In response to the significant development of underfloor heating systems in the UK, leading European water treatment specialist Sentinel has launched a brand new sanitiser and biocide product to add to its well known ‘X’ range of products. THE PERFECT BACK UP AT MADANI Wessex ModuMax condensing and high efficiency boilers from Hamworthy Heating are providing the perfect back up for a biomass boiler at Madani High School in Leicester. When ventilation is key to success When Forest Way Special Educational Needs School was opened recently, 35 Elta Fans were installed as part of the system to provide a comfortable, effective and well-ventilated learning environment for the pupils. The school, situated in the National Forest in Leicestershire, is a new coeducational special school for 138 pupils aged 3 – 19 years old with a wide range of special needs. Designed with sustainability in mind, the school incorporates several integrated, eco-friendly systems, added to which is the low energy ventilation system that utilises the Elta fans. The ventilation system incorporates eighteen Elta ‘Quietflow’ single fans,

QUIETLY DOES IT Keston has entered the air source heat pump market with the introduction of Airgen; it’s extremely quiet, highly efficient range of air source heat pumps, designed specifically for UK applications. The Airgen has been designed with British conditions in mind, bringing domestic hot water up to 65°C, with no need for the support of an immersion heater or direct resistance heater. At the same time Airgen provides space heating for radiators and under floor heating systems at variable temperatures from 35°C to 55°C. The Airgen comes in three models, which include a 4.5 kW system designed for small flats, 9kW and 12kW for larger properties, giving a complete spectrum of choice for the domestic market. The 9kW and 12kW versions can be banked together, with bespoke designs available for light commercial applications. To optimise efficiency, all units have dual temperature operation. Larger units incorporate twin scroll compressors to further maximise efficiency. Despite the fact that the Airgen operates from as low as -15°C, with functionality including a heated drip tray and four minute frost cycle enhancing its capabilities, as with all air source heat pumps, efficiency is compromised when the temperature drops. Clever venting Swindon Borough Council’s Central Library has benefited from Passivent’s natural ventilation and has been recognized as a top example of sustainable design in the UK, according to the firm. The library, in its newly developed state has won the Bespoke category in this year’s BREEAM awards, with the Passivent ventilation scheme as the key element in the £10m development. The library was previously a single storey building; now it is a fourstorey build and very much makes a feature of the

Although we are apparently seeing those all-important green shoots of recovery in the economy, the property market remains highly competitive. tional height. Hot pink cubicle doors with a wavy white pilaster were installed at the Rollerdisco, in keeping with the brief. eeping historic buildings in active use can be a massive undertaking and one of the biggest headaches is often caused by the most defining feature and character of a property - its windows – which can be cold, draughty; provide little protection against noise and minimal resistance to burglary. Proposals by Government advisors to financially penalise homeowners who do not fully insulate their property have been put before Ministers ahead of the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, the Government’s white paper setting
out its plans to cut carbon emissions by 34% by 2020. This, together with research undertaken by the Halifax Building Society indicating that fuel efficiency and energy saving measures are considered to be the home improvements, which add most value, serves to demonstrate how important it is to raise the thermal efficiency of windows. Owners of heritage buildings will be aware that English Heritage is clear that traditional windows should not be replaced with double gazed units and other solutions must be found. These include Secondary Glazing, a reversible adaptation that can provide thermal insulation in line with Building Regulation Part L standards together with the added benefits of high levels of acoustic insulation and improved security and one that is included within guidelines produced by English

Outside were the wood and tile smithy, shoeing room and store in addition to a two bay open hovel. At this time the horse was rapidly giving way to the internal combustion engine and the valuer noted ‘very little trade now’.” Some time after this entry the property became a family home. However, the current owner found it to be draughty and, being located on a busy main road, was in need of noise insulation. Underground solution Litter bins over-flowing with unsightly waste are unwelcome and unhygienic – and they need constant attention. Otto’s Underground Waste System (UWS) tackles the aesthetic problems as well as the need to improve waste streams segregation. Access to the underground storage is via neat surface receptacles and as underground temperatures tend to be lower than those in surface containers, odour levels are reduced. Typically, a UWS may hold the equivalent of between 15-20 240ltr wheeled bins, so there’s an environmental advantage in vehicles making fewer collections. Open Metering System The “Open Metering System” initiative of the manufacturers’ associations figawa, KNX and ZVEI has published an open, manufacturer independent, interoperable device and interface definition called an “Open Metering System Specification”. At present, the OMS specifications are being reviewed by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), as European new work item proposal TC 294. The OMS specification is available on the internet at www.openmetering.org. From May 2007, several
working groups of the Open Metering initiative checked the use of existing standards and defined supplements or concretions where necessary. For the data transfer between the actual meters and the data concentrator MUC – defined as primary communication – the EN 13757 standard was identified as the only current standard applicable to metering devices. This standard defines the M-Bus as a physical interface (wired and wireless), as well as a data protocol. EN 13757 also complies with the KNX standard. WORD The possibilities are endless By Denise Freeman External wall insulation systems (EWI) are used to create thermally efficient buildings, but they also have the potential to make a huge contribution to the aesthetic of a building, however wild or extravagant that may be. At this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show there was a fantastic example of a system being used exclusively for its decorative potential in the Cancer Research garden. While this use does not in anyway exploit the practical performance of an EWI, it is a great demonstration of its aesthetic possibilities.

hink external render systems and what comes to mind? A clean, minimalist, white façade? Think again – external renders are moving on from a restrained and elegant aesthetic to reveal their potential for flamboyance, colour and imagination: characteristics that are proving to be appealing to landscaping as well as the architectural sectors. ‘Impact’ was the theme of the garden, with the landscaping and planting representing ripples emanating throughout the garden to reflect the gentle, pervasive impact of Cancer Research in all of our lives. The feature wall constructed using the Sto external wall insulation (EWI) system StoTherm Classic, beautifully showcased the system’s design possibilities and provided an aesthetic, imaginative, curved perimeter for the garden that made a positive contribution to the design as a whole. Offering exceptional impact resistance the Sto system was ideal for this landscape project. The system is made up of a series of different products with an EPS layer providing the insulation. For this application, the EPS was carved with computer-controlled precision to incorporate the flowing curved motif prior to delivery on site. Once it had been fixed to the timber frame the EPS was strengthened with the highly flexible, cement-free render and reinforcing mesh
and then finished with a hand-applied Stolit acrylic resin render in two colour shades to give a truly three-dimensional effect. The muted colour of the render finish and the organic shapes carved into the surface combined to create a structure that is both functional and sculptural. This finish to the perimeter made a dramatic point of difference to the traditional fences and walls used to produce the mandatory boundaries that surround each show garden.. Although it is still a relatively new concept, Landscape architect Robert Myers tells us that he has used our systems in a number of his designs. There is huge potential for external render use in landscape and external works designs and with new innovative products on the market they have a real opportunity to succeed. As a durable, functional and versatile choice for landscape architects its use introduces structural elements into projects that can make strong, bold, aesthetically pleasing statements. The crack-resistant Sto render system also offers a superior finish that cannot be achieved with the use of traditional sand or cement render systems. Evidently, render systems are beginning to capture the imagination of architects and specifiers alike. Maybe one-day these systems will begin to be used in landscaping projects just as frequently as they are used on buildings, creating interesting, large-scale features at a low cost. Designers like it because of the ease and speed with which they can be installed and the design freedom they offer to specifiers. Render systems, of course, are suitable for a wide variety of projects, from public to private developments and both housing and non-housing. The Cancer research Garden was awarded the Silver-gilt Flora medal. Designed by Robert Myers and constructed by Willerby Landscapes, the StoTherm Classic system was installed by Regency Plastering Ltd. ■
