THE WORKSHOP Architects for Change (Lebanon) in collaboration with Youthnest (Greece) and Starters4Communities (The Netherlands) are organizing a Community Lab; a workshop on participatory and collective design and action in Beirut. 15-20 participants will be working on urban challenges in Hamra neighbourhood in Beirut. The workshop is part of a Global Collaboration Platform of Young Social Innovators; the Changemakersxchange supported by Ashoka & Robert Bosch Stiftung. The 4-days hands-on training program will equip participants to ideate and co-create concrete solutions in order to find new perspectives to urban challenges in the neighbourhood. At the end of the program, the ideas will be presented during a public event for possible implementations afterward.

FACILITATORS

THALIA RIZOU Thessaloniki, Greece Thalia Rizou is a project manager with an expertise in several urban, cultural and community projects and events in Greece and abroad. She is the founder and project manager of Youthnest, an initiative that provides solutions of big local challenges. She has lived and worked in Athens, Thessaloniki, Berlin and Coimbra. Her passion is to discover innovative applicable methods in order to make a change in local communities.

ABBAS SBEITY

Beirut, Lebanon Abbas Sbeity is a social entrepreneur with a background in design & architecture. He founded Architects for Change; a youth collective that focuses on the role of architecture in social impact and sustainable development. He has experience in managing national events such as Beirut Design Week. As a trainer and facilitator, he focuses on youth leadership, participatory design, and sustainable development. Abbas has been recognized as a young leader by international organizations in Europe and the United States.

SOPHIE KIESOUW

Amsterdam, The Netherlands Sophie is an advisor, trainer and facilitator. With a background in sociology, she is fascinated by urban change. She facilitates bottom-up solutions for urban challenges by making use of participatory methods. Sophie co-founded Starters4Communities, where they train and coach young changemakers in life skills and a hands-on mentality. During the 5-months training program participants are linked to a local community project, where they get to work on a challenge. Besides this she is co-founder of Co-Nectar, a collective of like-minded social entrepreneurs that share a workspace and collaborate on action research, project development and training & coaching.


ORGANIZERS YOUTHNEST Youthnest is an organisation that works towards an innovative and solutions oriented society. Through collective intelligence and collaboration, Youthnest aspires to solve the biggest challenges of our area. In order to achieve its aspirations, the organisation provides interactive workshops, community projects and service design through youth participation by using new tools and creativity.

ARCHITECTS FOR CHANGE Architects for Change is a non-profit youth collective, based in Beirut. Founded in 2014, the organization envisions to develop a leading community of young, active architects and designers in Lebanon. Under the three fundamental pillars of education, social impact, and youth development, Architects for Change endeavors to provide architecture and design students – as well as young professionals – with a platform to expand their learning experience beyond the classroom setting, as it foregrounds the essential role of architecture and design regarding social impact and sustainable development.

STARTERS4COMMUNITIES Starters4Communities mobilises the potential of young people to act together for a better world. We do this by helping graduates with the kick-start of an impact driven career, while strengthening local bottom-up community initiatives. Starters4Communities offers hands-on training programs, inspiration events, co-creation sessions and coaching from our growing community.


LOCATION NEIGHBOURHOOD | HAMRA Hamra is one of the main neighbourhood of the city of Beirut, it is one of the main economic and diplomatic hubs of Beirut. Due to the numerous sidewalk cafes and theatres, Hamra was the centre of intellectual activity in Beirut during the 1960s and 1970s. Today it is a commercial district with numerous prestigious universities (such as: American University of Beirut, Lebanese American University, and Haigazian University), hotels, furnished apartments, libraries, pubs, restaurants, and coffee shops, attracting young people, tourists, and businesses. During the workshop, participants will be observing the neighbourhood, identifying urban challenges, and ideating solutions.

WORKSHOP VENUE | T-MARBOUTA The workshop will take place at T-Marbouta, a well known Lebanese restaurant and coffee shop at the heart of Hamra Street.


CALL FOR APPLICATIONS CRITERIA We are looking for: - Young professional or student (20-35 years old) - Lebanese resident - Urban lover - English speaking - Available all the days of the workshop - No previous knowledge or experience in the workshop theme is needed

WORKSHOP FEE Participation fee is $20 [includes welcome lunch on June 30]
